About us at Aqua

Welcome to Aqua , Howth’s award winning seafood restaurant serving the community for over 15 years. Located at the very end of Howth’s West Pier in a building with a long and apt history,  Aqua has the best seat in town with legendary views across Howth Sound to the island of Ireland’s Eye.

Aqua  uses the best local ingredients in all dishes, a lot of fish served is caught locally and salads and vegetables are sourced  from specially selected local farmers. As well as offering a wide selection of fish and seafood dishes, our menu also includes a great selection of meat and vegetarian dishes including our renowned flame grilled steak.

A little bit of Aqua History

Aqua  opened on December 31st 1999, and since then our mission has been to provide the highest quality seafood dishes to everyone who visits us. Located at the very end of Howth’s West Pier Aqua sits proudly in a building which previously belonged to Howth Sailing Club, which was formed in 1895. The building, as it stands today, did not exist then, so the club rented rooms in the harbour offices (owned by ‘Bord of Works’) and the few small rooms were accessed by an outside wooden stairway.

In 1934, with the adoption of engines in boats, Howth Motor Yacht Club was formed and began operating from rooms in the same building. Fast forward to 1968 and membership of both clubs had grown to the point where the surroundings were cramped, to say the least. Coinciding with the amalgamation of the two clubs into ‘Howth Yacht Club’, the decision was taken to extend the premises into the building you see today and works were completed in 1969.

In 1986, Howth Yacht Club had again outgrown their premises and it was time to move on. Following their departure the building was used for various purposes including fish offices, but by late in the 20th century the building had become dilapidated and in need of intense renovation.

The owners of Aqua restaurant, keen sailors themselves, would often sail past and reminisce about the building. It was during one of these ‘sail pasts’ that a plan was hatched to open a restaurant and restore the building to its former glory. Refurbishments began in 1998 and on millennium night 2000, with a firework lit backdrop, Aqua restaurant served its first meal to a gathering of family and friends. The atmosphere has never changed, a meal in Aqua is an opportunity to gather to celebrate with family and friends all that is good in dining and select company.

The Waterside Bar

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We had thought about eating at one of the restaurants, but as it was the Christmas holidays and most were closed we took ourselved to the Waterside bar. We were five and sat ourselves upstairs where we got a lovely window seat and a clear... view of the harbour. Food was very good, I had the sea chowder and a Guinness and the others also enjoyed their meals as well. More

Visited here last night for dinner. The restaurant upstairs is closed but food is still available in the bar. I hope the upstairs restaurant reopens. Loved the view out over the Yacht Club from the window seats. Anyway the same great food is available in... the bar and the staff are excellent. Their fish is fabulous. Well worth a visit. More

Decided to take a trip to Howth with all of the family for the day, considering we have had such good weather. Pier and settings where lovely. Tried to get a table along the quays, but our party was too big, so strolled along the... main street. My first instinct was to que up out side Beshoffs Take away, and just get 7 fish and chips, but with 2 children I thought we go for the sit down option, as there are no benches in the grass areas opposite the yacht club which seems strange, so we went into El Paso Restaurant. Staff where nice and 5 Fish and Chips where ordered and two Scampi's. A bit expensive for fish and chips but they all liked it. My scampi was more batter than sacmpi and very rubbery. Should have complained from the start but as everyone else was enjoying theirs I decide not too. Told the waitress at the end and she did appologise, and said that she had a word with the chef. So if travelling to Howth get your self a folding table and chair from a camping company and que up for the take away, better value. But if you want a bit of luxury and quality food, El Paso is not the place More

A mid-week trip to Howth is always a pleasure of mine as I tend to always work weekends. Myself and my Mother who have both been working on the front lines during Covid-19 had our first day out and a chance to see each other... and chat in nearly 6 months. On our way back to the car park we passed The Waterside Bar at around 5pm and it looked very welcoming so we decided to grab a bite to eat. We were seated immediately by a very friendly female host after I gave her my name and contact number for tracing purposes and I used the bathroom while she then seated my mother who was waiting outside at a lovely table out front which was spotless clean and it was lovely to enjoy the afternoon sunshine (unfortunately I didn't catch her name) We just wanted something light before the drive home so we ordered Spicy Chicken Wings to share with chips, a Club Orange and a pint of Bulmers. Drinks arrived very quickly and withing 10-15 minutes the food was served. Hot and Delicious and very well presented not to mention very tasty. The atmosphere was light and friendly and relaxed and we did not feel rushed or under pressure eat drink and go (which was what I was worried about as it was my first time visiting a Pub/Restaurant since the new rules came in) We finished our food and paid the bill which was a very modest 24.15 euro. We asked if we could have a box to take the remaining chicken wings away as the portion was massive and as I told the server "they are too good to leave behind" and it wasn't a problem. After the bill was paid we then spent about another 15 minutes finishing our drinks and did not feel under any pressure to vacate. In all we spent about 1 hour and 30 minutes. In closing the staff, service and food were excellent. The premises and facilities were spotless and I'll be back again because I had serious food envy of the Fish and Chips which looked amazing so I'll bring a hungry appetite next time. Thank you for making our first visit to a Pub/Restaurant since March 2020 so pleasant. More

Myself and my friend were here today for some food. I ordered the roast chicken and was extremely disappointed with the dinner. Mash potatoes were so watery and when I asked for a new bowl of them, I got the exact same watery potatoes again.... Waiters and waitresses passed us by numerous times and never asked us if our meals were ok. Would not recommend dining here and will not be returning. More

I have visited this pub/restaurant many times and have meant to review it. Last evening I had fantastic cod and chips there. The fish was so beautifully fresh and the tartar sauce was the best I have had . You can really judge a place... with the chips ....and these were really good. It was really good value too. Nice to get such good food in a beautiful location at such a reasonable cost. Service was great too. Friendly and efficient .all round a great spot! More

Came here for lunch today and it was a great experience. The weather was really bad but the staff made the impossible to make us feel comfortable and changed the table a couple of times. I had a problem with a glass but it was... immediately replaced with a fresh one and a whole new drink on the house even though I still had some left of the previous. Got fish and chips and it was unreal! The cod was really big and tasty. 100% recommended! Super friendly staff! More

We visited yesterday with our kids. It was quite busy. The food was OK, but people were seated too close together, and the toilets hadn't been cleaned in some time. There was also no contact details taken for contact tracing. We left feeling very uneasy,... and I wouldn't recommend this place until they up their game regarding following the covid 19 rules. More

We were sitting at a table and having some drinks, but when we didn’t even finish them we were send away because they needed our table four people who wanted to eat something. This was ridiculous while another table was sitting there longer than we... were. We were only allowed to sit there for about 15 minutes. The waiter treated us badly and was very rude as well. Not a good place and we will sure not return there. More

Went with some friends for a drink to this place. A half hour after we got our drinks from a very rude waiter we were told to pay and get out. Would not recommend.

We went for a pint and we waited 15 minutes, watching how people that came after us made their orders. Three differents waiters saw us, one told us to wait but he never came. We had to leave to another place. Hay un montón de... ofertas por el paseo. Este no es bueno. More

Food was terrible. Had chicken wings to start and they were awful. Just completely bland apart from being laced with salt. Main course went for the fresh fish and chips. Fish was ok but cheap nasty frozen chips from a bag, for 14 euro, really...... Kids meal was nuggets and chips. Again cheap nasty disgusting 'from frozen' nuggets with the same chips. Even managed to con me on the drinks, got charged for a pint bottle of cider even though I only had a draught cider which is normally much cheaper. All in all you would go a long way to find somewhere worse value for money. AVOID... More

Had lunch yesterday and I must say it was excellent, staff so friendly and food was excellent, Well worth a visit !!

Visited the Waterfront with my two girls (7 and 4 yrs.). We were on our way to a party from an event in the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin. It looked nice, and the menu looked good so we gave it a try. Good were we duped.... I ordered a beef ciabatta sandwich, thinking it was a streak sandwich and I ordered fish and chips for my two little ones. We were brought three settings of knife, fork and napkin. My food arrived and it was exactly as it said on the menu - beef sandwich and chips. Nothing else, just some pepper sauce, no salad, no vegetables, nothing else. Now salad is not expensive and a bit on the plate would have added to it tremendously, with a bit of dressing I would have felt I got a half decent meal. The beef was brisket. Brisket is one of my favourite cuts and if cooked properly has loads of flavour, can be very tender and is not expensive, one of the cheaper cuts of beef. This was cooked well and had flavour, but the cost was €16.95 for that. I had expected steak strips at that price, God was I taken aback. My girls food was worse. One plate of fish and chips arrived. The server said dumbly 'I think something is missing'; to which I replied 'Yes, one plate of food'. After another few minutes the second plate arrived and my elder daughter took that. She was eating it and found a bone in the fish. Now I know fish have bones, there's no avoiding that, but in a child's meal I expect the bones to be all removed. It is to dangerous leaving them in (duh), children can choke. She refused to finish the fish and did not want anything else to replace it. It is the chefs responsibility to do make sure all bones are removed (I do it at home when cooking fish), not the fish suppliers, so I blame the kitchen. The portions were small, the cost was €6.95, and given that this is Howth, a fishing village, I think very overpriced. I was very unhappy, but we were all very hungry after a long day and had little time to go anywhere else and wait. The Cafe Kaira was looking very inviting, but I had two wild and hungry girls to control, so we stayed. Overall - very expensive for very sub-par, ordinary food, with those damn fish bones. €16.95 for a brisket sandwich with nothing else is taking the pXss prices. Highly NOT recommended. I won't be back, learned my lesson. More

The staff was very unfriendly and rude towards us, their paying costumers. While we were having drinks they told us that we had to leave because they needed the table, even though we still had full glasses.

We encourage our customers with food allergies or special dietary needs to visit www.mcdonalds.com for ingredient information, and to consult their doctor for questions regarding their diet. Due to the individualized nature of food allergies and food sensitivities, customers' physicians may be best positioned to make recommendations for customers with food allergies and special dietary needs. If you have questions about our food, please reach out to us directly at mcdonalds.com/contact or 1-800-244-6227.
