ICON Yacht – The Incredible $75M Superyacht

The ICON yacht is a 67-metre (221 ft) luxury yacht built by the Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts (Studio Linse) in 2009 as their first project.

She can welcome up to twelve guests in seven cabins and was last refitted in 2014, during which the vessel was extended by 5 metres.

She is currently available for charter for $500,000 per week.

Twelve guests find space in seven cabins inside ICON. Her interior was designed by Studio Linse at the shipyard where she was built.

Her master suite is split across two levels and is unusually spacious for a yacht her size.

A Hammam, sauna, pool, and spa facilities are available on board for the comfort of the guests. Seventeen crew members find space in below-deck accommodation.

The yacht also carries a wide variety of water toys, including two regular and one stand-up jet ski, scuba diving equipment, an inflatable platform, sea bobs, water skis, wakeboards, kayaks, and paddleboards.

The ICON yacht also has three tenders that can take guests to the mainland or on excursions if required.

The interior of ICON is classy and timeless, with minimalist elements and high-quality furnishings.

Natural tones and creme upholstery throughout the vessel make the yacht appear upscale and luxurious.

Specifications

ICON is 67 meters (221 ft) long with an 11.40 meter (37.4 ft) beam and a 3.80 (12.5 ft) meter draft.

She weighs 1295 tons and comfortably cruises at 13 knots which allows her to have a total range of 4,000 nautical miles.

Her maximum speed lies at 15 knots, and she is powered by MTU engines . 

RWD Design Studio worked on the exterior of ICON. They specialize in elegant and comprehensive yacht designs of mid-sized to large yachts.

She has a beautiful black and white exterior with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.

She features a beach club that opens up onto the swimming platform and a beautiful infinity pool on the aft deck. Her top deck has a jacuzzi and cozy seating areas for guests.

Despite not being one the largest yachts in the world, ICON actually has fantastic deck space with generous areas reserved for sunbathing and relaxing.

Her previous owner paid a reported price of US $50 million for ICON in 2009 and is rumored to have listed the yacht for sale for US $55 million in 2016.

The yacht is available for charter at a weekly rate of US $500,000.

LOON 221 yacht's interior styling is done by Redman Whiteley Dixon, with the interior design being a work of the renowned Studio Linse. The decor is timeless, elegant and neutral. A sumptuous salon lounge on the main deck offers plush seating, set in a social atmosphere surrounding a large coffee table and the latest in entertainment; further aft is the formal dining easily accompanying up to 10 guests. She boasts panoramic windows which provide great natural light and stunning views from the salon and dining area. Soft lighting and bespoke finishes create a sophisticated feel, perfect for every occasion. On the main deck forward is the master stateroom, boasting a full beam layout, king-size bed, easy access to the upper observation lounge and study and a large ensuite with a luxurious custom tub. The master cabin benefits from spectacular views, excellent storage and exterior access on both port and starboard, leading to the upper foredeck, featuring seating and sun pads.

Her upper deck comprises a sky lounge, complete with sofas, a beautiful leather ottoman and full entertainment systems. The VIP guest cabin is located on the upper deck forward of the sky lounge to starboard and features a generous shower room. On the lower deck are two double cabins, as well as two twin cabins, all ensuite. ICON has a fabulous beach club thanks to the extension she received; it includes a gym, hammam, sauna, wet bar, lounge, bathroom with shower, dive centre, exterior sunloungers on the teak beach and direct access to the four lower deck cabins.

On deck guests will find there are plenty of areas to relax, entertain and be social, no matter the occasion. Her expansive teak beach and beach club, based on the lower deck, features an extended swim area, sun loungers, lounge, hammam, sauna, wet bar, and shower, it is the ideal area for incredible fun during the day, enjoying the multitude of water toys. On the main deck, aft of the salon is large exterior aft deck, which features an alfresco dining area, sun pads, and large swimming pool. The upper deck has ample outside seating and a further alfresco dining table. Her top deck boasts additional sun pads, seating, and deluxe Jacuzzi tub.

The owner’s suite has a private flight of stairs with direct access to an owner’s salon, which can be kept private or opened up to guests. The architecture of the outside areas of the yacht helps give the exterior its “definitive proportions.” Dramatically staged overhangs with raked superstructure were carefully balanced in profile against the interior volumes, giving the yacht huge amounts of living area for its size. The interior styling features modern furnishing in soft tones for the relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

Thanks to the advanced technology used in the construction of the yacht, she can provide smooth cruising experience in any conditions, while stabilizers reduce roll motion and for ultimate comfort.

Superyacht LOON 221 is the first Icon Yachts vessel ever launched by the shipyard. She boasts a very graceful steel hull built with an aluminium superstructure. Her beam measures 11.40 meters and her draft is of 3.50 meters. She reaches a maximum speed of 16 knots, thanks to her twin MTU engines. A cruising speed is 12 knots with an impressive range of 6,000 nautical miles. The capacity of her fuel tanks is of 160,000 litres.

The Icon is fitted with foils that ensure smooth cruising across the water with minimal drag and maximum efficiency and speed. In fact, BMW says the wings reduce the energy requirement by up to 80 percent compared to a conventional planing boat. 

The 43-footer is also equipped with a powerful electric propulsion system that runs on high-voltage batteries supplied by BMW. A pair of 100 kW electric motors convert the 240 kWh of energy supplied by six batteries from the BMW i3 for a range of more than 50 nautical miles and a cruising speed of 24 knots. Of course, the electric vessel navigates the seas silently, smoothly, and cleanly. 

Like any good bimmer, the Icon will be ultra comfortable. With a beam of nearly 15 feet, the newcomer has a generous aft entertaining area and a very spacious lounge entrance. The lounge is adorned with designer furniture and a kaleidoscopic carpet that uses metal sheeting to reflect sunlight like waves on the sea. The yacht also sports 360-degree rotating seats and a tablet-based infotainment system.  There’s also a 32-inch, 6K touchscreen display in the central command station that emulates the BMW iDrive operating system. Everything from the mileage to the weather can be ascertained via voice commands.

Accommodation

ICON offers sumptuous and flexible accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 staterooms plus an additional single staff cabin. The Owner’s main deck, duplex suite is reached either by the lobby or via the study/lounge on the upper deck. The suite has 2 temperate controlled walk-in dressing rooms located off the entrance corridor. Forward is the main cabin and master en-suite incorporating bath, double sink unit, shower and toilet. Private staircase to the study/lounge on the upper level. The study/lounge can either be closed off as part of the master suite or accessible for all the guests. With full blackout blinds this area can also be used as a cinema room. On the upper deck are the double guest stateroom with en-suite shower room and staff cabin with standard size single bed and en-suite shower room. Below deck, all 4 cabins are convertible double/twin with private en-suite facilities.

It’s probably not the news you were expecting to hear, but BMW has launched the world’s first all-glass flying yacht.

Built in collaboration with yacht manufacturer, Tyde , it’s a hydrofoil boat that looks like a supercar flying above the water.

Interesting fact: it’s called ‘The Icon’ as it’s actually powered by the same batteries you’d find under the hood of a BMW i3 – six of them to be precise.

The Icon is a hydrofoil, which means it can lift itself from the water as its speed increases.

Apparently ‘foiling’ – where the hull is above the surface, not below like conventional boats – reduces the energy required by up to 80 per cent.

It’s powered by two 134-hp (100-kW) electric motors that, when combined with the six batteries, provide a total capacity of 240kWh, giving it a top speed of 30 knots – equivalent to around 55 km/h on land.

In terms of range, The Icon can cover 50 nautical miles (100 kilometers / 62 miles) on a charge.

Okay, they may not be record-breaking stats, but then again this boat isn’t designed for speed and power – it’s designed as a work of art and a toy for the mega rich.

Design-wise, the inspiration came from Japanese origami.

It has a pointy ‘nose’ and a larger section at the back.

Speaking of which, the stern is characterized by two key features: a vertical structure that looks like a car spoiler, and a sizable aft deck.

Each section of the exterior is adorned with LED lights to make it shine at night, and the result is outstanding.

The interior is gorgeous, just like the cabin of a supercar or a luxury sedan.

It follows the same color theme as the exterior, with ocean blue upholstery and gold-tone accents.

In the cabin, you’ll find six 360-degree rotating armchairs with individual tablets within arm’s reach, as well as plush sofas and soft suede carpeting.

In the middle of the deck, the command station has iDrive-style controls and voice control.

What’s more, you also get a 32-inch ‘infotainment’ touchscreen display with 6k resolution.

But the best part about it is the noise aka the ‘on-board soundscape’.

A while ago, BMW partnered up with Oscar-winning score composer Hans Zimmer to create custom soundtracks for its cars.

The partnership extends to other BMW’s vehicles as well, including this boat.

As you sail along, the boat produces notes composed by Hans Zimmer himself.

Now that does sound good.

67.61 metre superyacht Icon sold

The 67.61 metre motor yacht Icon , jointly listed for sale at Fraser and Camper & Nicholsons , has been sold with Peter Bennett at bluewater acting for the buyer.

Designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon and built in steel and aluminum, she was delivered in 2010 as the first yacht from the Dutch yard Icon Yachts . A comprehensive refit in 2014 added five metres to her length and also added a number of fresh features. She now has a five metre infinity swimming pool and has been fitted with a large six person sauna, large gym, shower and dive store.

A high volume interior with design by Studio Linse is elegant and contemporary, accommodating up to 14 guests in seven cabins. These consist of a split-level master suite, three VIP suites, two twins and a convertible twin that can also act as a home cinema, all with entertainment systems and en suite bathroom facilities.

The main saloon is vast and has comfortable seating, a bar and an entertainment centre including a 50-inch Pioneer television screen, a stereo surround sound system and a server delivering on-demand video and audio throughout the guest areas. Forward is a formal dining area with seating for 12 guests.

The open plan upper saloon offers a restful atmosphere with settees and armchairs in front of a 37-inch LCD television screen and with a bar close to hand.

A major attraction is the large beach club offering such features as a bar, ice maker, television screen and Hammam. Twin 2,480hp MTU diesel engines give her a range of 6,000 nautical miles and she is fitted with zero-speed stabilisers.

Lloyd's classed and MCA compliant, Icon was asking €48.5 million, and will be available for charter with bluewater from 2018.

Insiders still have no idea what's going to happen to Russian oligarchs' seized superyachts

• It's been two years since Russia invaded Ukraine, leading to sanctions against Russian oligarchs.
• Many of their superyachts were seized or frozen , leading industry insiders to question their fate.
• The yachts, some of which are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, remain in a state of limbo.

More than two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, the boating world still doesn't have many answers about what's going on with the very large, expensive elephants in the sea: oligarchs' superyachts .

The war prompted many governments to enact sanctions against Russia's richest , including seizing their superyachts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. But it's unclear whether they can be sold or who'd buy them, leaving ports peppered with massive boats stuck in a floating limbo.

"The Russian problem, it's becoming a bigger and bigger and bigger problem," one luxury yacht broker told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show last week. Like many others, he requested not to be named, given the sensitive nature of the matter at hand and the generally discreet nature of the industry.

Russia has been a massive player in the massive boat market for a long time. In August 2021 — about six months before Russia's Ukraine invasion — Russians owned the second-largest share of yachts over 40 meters in length, according to a report from the industry publication SuperYacht Times.

They were responsible for 16% of new build superyacht purchases in the decade preceding the report and are known for splashing out on extravagant interiors and unique features. (One builder BI spoke to recalled a mandate from an oligarch for a large safe in the owner's cabin in which he could keep his rifles. The builder later learned he'd use them to skeet shoot on deck.)

But those sales have now screeched to a halt as oligarchs get hit by international sanctions. At least a dozen superyachts — worth well over $1 billion combined — have been affected.

And no one is quite sure what will happen to them.

Russia's sanctioned superyachts are hard to buy and sell

The first problem is that many of the yachts are "frozen" — not seized. That means that although the Russian owners can't operate or collect them, they don't technically belong to an overseas government, so they can't be sold without special permission.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors petitioned a judge asking for consent to sell the Amadea, the 106-meter superyacht that has been docked in San Diego and costs the US as much as $922,000 a month to maintain.

"I've had some inquiries, but all you can tell them is we don't know the outcome yet" of the case, another superyacht broker told BI at the yacht show.

And despite the broker's claim of interest in yachts like Amadea , most ultrarich — or at least their brokers — don't want to go near the vessels with a ten-foot pole, even if the government does get legal permission to sell them.

"How does it look if you bought a Russian boat?" Julia Simpson, a broker at Thompson of Monaco, said. "Even if it's completely legal and normal, there are too many things on the line," she said, like how the original owner got their money and whether that could make the new buyer look bad.

There are also possible legal implications, as it's hard for the government to prove who actually owns the yachts.

"Oligarchs typically structure their ownership of these high-value assets through a web of offshore shell companies and trusts that is designed to conceal the true owner," Joshua Naftalis, a former federal prosecutor who now works for Pallas Partners, told BI.

And if the government does assume ownership, it's highly dependent on court orders. For example, a Russian whose yacht had been seized by the French government regained access to his boat after winning a legal battle in 2022.

"It's a very difficult process to buy them," Ralph Dazert, the head of intelligence at SuperYacht Times, told BI. "There is a high risk of the former (Russian) owner suing you to get the boat back."

He pointed to the Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht that Eric Schmidt planned to purchase for $67 million last year in an auction put on by Antigua and Barbuda. He backed out after various parties tried to block the sale, likely deeming it not worth the legal headache.

"When the reason for sanctioning goes away, which it may do," the Russian owners will try to get their boats back , Simpson said. After all, "the government's not going to pay them."'

That said, if sanctions are dropped, the yachts will be worth much less than when they were seized, as a boat not in use deteriorates much faster than one sailing the seas.

"Those yachts need to be used to be kept in shape, kept in condition," the second broker said. "​​Just having them sit at the dock with a temporary crew on board is not good for the boats."

And the sanctioned Russians who have managed to maintain control of their superyachts won't have an easy time offloading them in the future.

Americans who try to do business with sanctioned oligarchs would have a number of hoops to jump through — like finding a bank to process the purchase, which would be next to impossible. If somehow they did and the government caught wind, they'd face hefty penalties and the transaction would be void.

So Russia's richest have found themselves "stuck" sailing in a select few countries that will let them, like the Maldives, Montenegro, and Dubai.
