Star Class 45″ Laser-cut Frame Set – Kit number MW230!

Modeller’s Workshop is proud to be producing laser-cut frames for the Star 45 R/C sailboat. We are now supplying the most recent revision of the design perfected by John Fisher, one of the best-known Star sailors, and consistent winner of Star 45 events.

These plans are derived from boat number 842, a boat that has placed in the top four at Star regional championships in 08, 09, 2010, and 2012.

These plans are based on the original Star 45 Class Association plans that were designed in 1984. These drawings are found on Dave Mainwaring’s blog at www.woodstar45/blogspot.ca . Dave’s site is one of many that are dedicated to this amazing R/C sailboat class. If there’s one boat that can be built consistently, and to exacting specifications, this is it.

Apart from Dave’s site and drawings done by a successful sailor, there is an avid community of Star 45 sailors. The Star 45 Class Association is found at www.theamya.org/boats/star45/ and the Yahoo Community group is at Star 45 Yahoo Group .

Our frames include all the main bulkheads, flat parts for the foils, parts for the semi-bulkheads and a special internal jig to aid the alignment of the frame as shown in this picture:

Note that in this picture each frame is further supported by a jig mounted to a build board. You’ll find all kinds of ideas like this in the various resources noted above.

Once the frame is built, our frames are cut with notches for stringers, as shown in this picture:

Note that this picture shows the assembly of two boats at the same time. This is really the best way to learn how to tune boats. With two boats, you can make adjustments to one at a time and see how the boats react.

Next, one of the nice things about building a Star is that it has fairly flat sides. This means the planking is simple and quick. You get in the water faster with a Star than with a boat that needs typical planking.

Star 45 Radio Control Sailing

SIZED RIGHT

The Star 45 is small enough to transport in virtually any car, but large enough to sail like a full-size boat.  Once you sail one, you will have to have one.

TERRIFIC PEOPLE

We race at model yacht clubs throughout the United States.  The class attracts  sailors who take racing seriously but don't take themselves too seriously.

BUILT TO RACE

The 45" long Star 45 weighs 12 to 13 lbs, carries about 1000 sq. in. of sail, and with a ballast/weight ratio near 70%, it is super responsive in all conditions.

THE STAR 45 CLASS

Sail a star and sail a legend.

This is the new Star 45 Class information website.  The Star 45 is a 45" long hard chine, semi-scale model of the legendary full-size International Star boat. Boats can be home-built in wood using plans available from the AMYA, built in fiberglass with major components available from class suppliers, or purchased custom built in fiberglass to any stage of construction from class-approved builders. Available laser-cut frames for wood construction produce a consistent hull shape. Fiberglass hulls, decks, short kits and parts as well as complete boats are available from class suppliers; contact information for them can be found under the SUPPLIERS tab. We're looking for new members who want to race!

Sails: The jib and main can be made of either Trispi 25 or Trispi 40. The typical configuration is Trispi 25 for the jib and Trispi 40 for the main. In addition, we are also offering the option to have the sails made from CPM 505, PX75, 1.4 mil mylar, 2.0 mil mylar or 3.0 oz Mylar.  Sails come with solid layered Dacron corners, draft stripes, tell tales, battens, and luff wire installed in the jib. Options include main and jib numbers. Sails include a Trim Guide and Notes.

About STAR 45

The Star 45 is a 45″ long hard chine, semi-scale model of the legendary full-size International Star boat. Star 45s can be home-built using plans available from the AMYA, partially fabricated with major components available from suppliers, or purchased custom built to any stage of completion from class-approved builders. Available laser-cut frames for wood construction produce a consistent competitive hull. Fiberglass hulls, decks, short kits and parts as well as complete boats are available from class suppliers; contact information for them can be found on the class website. The Star 45 is big enough to sail like a full-size boat, but is easily managed and small enough to be transported in any car. It is sophisticated enough to be a good trainer, offering the racing sailor full adjustability, but not overwhelming to a newcomer. Star 45 racing is very competitive. We’re looking for new skippers who want to race!

Star 45s are raced in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions of the United States, plus Texas, Chicago and Northern California. There is some activity in other locations as well and new fleets are encouraged. You can form one!

Weight of rigged boat without sails: Approx. 12 lbs. Minimum weight ready to sail with rig and battery is 12-1/2 lbs.
