Scenic Eclipse is a six-star, ultra-luxury mega yacht owned by Australian river cruise operator Scenic. It is the first ocean cruise ship for the company, which specialises in luxury river cruises.

The yacht is designed for an Ice Class 1A Super rating that enables it to navigate through Arctic and Antarctic waters in the summer. It also has the Polar Class 6 rating, the highest passenger ship ice-class rating, to navigate in challenging seas safely.

Scenic announced the launch of the vessel in January 2016 and awarded the construction contract to the Uljanik Group based in Croatia. The vessel’s delivery was, however, delayed due to financial challenges faced by the Uljanik Group. In February 2019, DIV Group and Fincantieri came to the rescue of Uljanik Group by purchasing an interest in the company and, subsequently, led the construction of Scenic Eclipse.

The yacht was finally delivered in  August 2019, followed by a christening ceremony in September 2019. The shipbuilding contract also includes an option for a second ship to be delivered in 2020.

Scenic Eclipse ship embarked on her maiden voyage from Reykjavík to Quebec in August 2019, followed by discovery voyages to the Americas, Antarctica, Europe and the Mediterranean, as well as the Arctic and Norwegian Fjords.

Designed by Finnish ship designing and engineering company Foreship, Scenic Eclipse is the world’s safest and most technologically advanced discovery yacht.

The vessel’s design incorporates state-of-the-art engineering and external design inspired by the sleek contours of a mega yacht. It has a total length of168m, moulded breadth of 21.5m and draught of 5.3m. Its gross tonnage is 17,085t and cruising speed is 17kts.

The luxury yacht features eight decks, deck three to deck ten. The first deck houses mud rooms for easy zodiac entry, tender entrance and a self-service guest laundry.

Deck four comprises of a welcome lobby and reception, main lounge, lobby bar, Pan Asian restaurant, Italian and steak restaurant, boutique, theatre, excursion centre and a library.

The fifth deck features a contemporary fine dining restaurant, ocean café and lounge, observation lounge and bar, and an open viewing deck at bow and guest suites.

Deck six houses a spa sanctuary, shallow plunge pools and guest suites. The seventh deck features indoor / outdoor Al fresco restaurant, indoor / outdoor pool, a beauty salon, gym, yoga and pilates studio, outdoor terrace and guest suites.

Deck eight is equipped with a helipad and hangars, as well as guest suites. The ninth deck has a helicopter hangar, spa and penthouse suites, while deck ten features a sun terrace.

Scenic Eclipse suites and accommodation

The yacht carries 228 guests (restricted to 200 in Polar regions) in 114 all-veranda suites. It carries a crew of 172 for normal regions and 182 for Polar regions.

None of the veranda suites are smaller than 32m² with the biggest suite having an area of 233m², which is bigger than a tennis court.

Available suites include 66 verandah suites, 28 deluxe verandah suites, 14 spa suites, grand panorama and owner’s penthouse suites.

Veranda suites are 32m² in size and offer a private veranda, separate bedroom and living area with floor-to-ceiling windows. It features a pillow menu, mini-bar, deluxe furnishing, HDTV and climate control.

At 38m², deluxe veranda suites are larger than veranda suites and feature larger bedroom and living areas.

Spa suites, located on decks eight and nine, are 48m² in size and have living and bedroom areas with luxury amenities. They feature spa baths and offer space to relax and views from the veranda.

Grand panorama suites are located on decks six and eight at the front of the yacht. At 56m², the suites offer curved verandas on deck six, and a veranda with 43m² terrace on deck eight.

Owner’s penthouse suites are located in a prime position on the ninth deck at the bow of the yacht. Featuring a 125m² area, the suites offer luxury facilities available in both suites and master suites, and also feature a 60m² terrace.

Combining the owner’s penthouse suite with a spa suite will create a two-bedroom penthouse suite with an area of 233m², which offers the best of all facilities.

The  interior  design for the suites, inspired by leading luxury hotels, was provided by Karen Moroney.

Dining options on the six-star yacht

The yacht offers six onboard dining options, from casual to fine dining, at Elements, Yacht Club, Koko’s, Lumière, Azure Bar & Café, Epicure

Options include a contemporary French fine dining restaurant with a capacity for 44 people, Pan Asian restaurant with 100 seats, an Italian and steak restaurant with the same capacity, an al fresco indoor/outdoor restaurant for 125 people, and an Ocean café and lounge with a capacity of 40.Food is prepared using locally sourced produce and includes regional cuisines drawn from the regions the yacht cruises through.

The yacht features a Whisky Bar at the main lounge displaying the ship’s 110 varieties of whisky.

Entertainment and relaxation on Scenic Eclipse cruise ship

The luxury yacht features a 5,000ft² spa that offers an extensive menu of luxury treatments, indoor and outdoor jacuzzis and plunge pools. Other relaxation areas include an indoor heated pool, which features a retractable roof, plunge pool, gym and a separate yoga and pilates studio.

Sun deck jacuzzis offer guests another area to relax, as well as spacious bars and lounges.

Guests can be entertained in the 240-seat theatre that offers programmes and lectures by an onboard discovery team. The team, which includes dedicated Antarctic and Arctic experts in their fields, keep guests updated with a range of subjects and interests.

Excursions offered by Scenic Eclipse

The yacht offers in-air, underwater, and shore excursions to guests. It features two six-seater, twin-engine helicopters, one seven-seater submarine and 12 zodiacs and kayaks onboard.

Excursions will take guests to inaccessible places by flying low over the dramatic crags of the Scottish Isles, the volcanic wonders of Italy or the coral cays of the Caribbean.

The submarine is custom-built for optimal sightseeing to rarely visited places such as the underwater ruins in Greece and Turkey, as well as kaleidoscopic coral reefs in the Caribbean.

Through scuba diving, guests can experience a variety of underwater wildlife and colourful coral reefs.

Guests can also enjoy shore excursions on zodiacs and kayaks in the Arctic and Mediterranean seas. A unique mudroom enables guests to embark and disembark for their excursions quickly and easily.

Technology used

Scenic Eclipse is built with the latest technological advancements  to ensure the highest safety. It features custom-built stabilisers that are 50% larger than other ships and an ice-strengthened hull.

State-of-the-art fins that can adjust themselves enable the ship to handle the strongest water movements and to remain stable, even at zero speeds.

Unlike other vessels that use traditional anchors, Scenic Eclipse is fitted with a dynamic positioning system that uses GPS to accurately maintain the vessel’s position, which is also an eco-friendly way to control the ship.

The vessel also features other environmentally sustainable systems, including advanced water treatment systems and efficient low-impact engines.

Discovery Yacht Features

Scenic Eclipse has ten exquisitely designed decks. The heart of the Discovery Yachts can be found on Deck 4 and 5, showcasing a variety of dining experiences, bars, lounges, and the theater. Nestled between Decks 5 and 9 are the indulgent ultra-luxury suites.

Deck 10 is an idyllic place for relaxation that features a bar, cabanas, and Vitality Pool. The expansive Senses Spa is located on Deck 6, while the Yacht Club, gym, yoga, and Pilates studio are on Deck 7.

For panoramic views, guests can ascend to the Observation Deck and Lounge on Deck 5. On Deck 7, you can visit the open bridge to meet the navigation team and gain first-hand insight into the ship's operations.

Deck 3 houses the Discovery Center. Here, our guests can store their polar boots as well as prepare for kayak and stand-up paddle board excursions. Zodiac and tender embarkation also take place from this deck.

Scenic Eclipse to Recommence Ultra-Luxury Yacht Expedition Voyages to Antarctica

Scenic Eclipse , The World’s First Discovery Yacht™, will be one of the first cruises to return to Antarctica when it resumes sailing its ultra-luxury expedition voyages starting January 7, 2022.

Scenic’s 13-day “Antarctica in Depth” voyage takes in the endless, pristine landscapes of Antarctica and its unique wildlife, as awe-inspiring and unchanged as the day that man first set eyes upon them. And after nearly two years of no cruise visitors, Scenic is eager to share these treasured moments. Departing Ushuaia, Argentina, guests spend six full days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula, often with multiple shore visits per day made possible by the limit of 200 guests on board Scenic Eclipse. Highlights vary, depending on weather conditions, and may include navigating the stunning seven-mile-long Lemaire Channel where steep cliffs hem in the iceberg-filled passage, the chance to visit a working scientific base and discuss life in these harsh conditions with the staff, exploring an abandoned whaling station, climbing to the rim of a volcanic crater, and, if conditions are favorable, the opportunity to cross the Antarctic Circle at latitude 66°33’ South.

Included daily excursions range from active to awe-inspiring: cruising among the ice formations in Zodiacs, navigating kayaks or paddleboards amongst icebergs while whales feed below, stepping ashore to view (and photograph) the vast penguin rookeries and seals, and taking hikes with expert marine biologists and geologists on pristine paths – to name a few.

For a truly unique experiences, guests are welcome aboard the yacht’s custom-built six-guest submarine, Scenic Neptune, which offers inspiring journeys deep below the ocean surface with 280° views of nature and rich marine life in their true habitat. Or they may wish to soar above the horizon in one of two state-of-the-art, six-guest Airbus helicopters that offer vistas not seen by any other method.

Scenic Eclipse offers multiple indulgent spaces and experiences on board. Lectures and education programs from the expert Discovery Team in the yacht’s state-of-the-art theater, and entertainment produced by “B My Guest” are interspersed with time enjoying many of the on-board luxuries. The expansive 5,920ft² Senses Spa offers a host of spaces for relaxation and wellbeing, while the dedicated PURE: yoga and Pilates studio and POWER: gym help maintain fitness and wellness. With up to 10 dining choices on board, the reimagined Yacht Club offers spacious and casual dining experiences – with an extended indoor dining area, alfresco outdoor dining, and staff-served food islands. The Night Markets @ Koko’s takes inspiration from the night markets and street food from around Asia, India and the Middle East, and Sushi @ Koko’s, the authentic Japanese restaurant, has added window seating due to its popularity. Deck 10, the yacht’s top level, has a new Panorama Bar, with deck chairs and lounges as well as new cabanas with lounges and privacy curtains – all with easy access to two of the yacht’s Vitality Pools and unfettered views of the world.

Other enhancements throughout the yacht include temperature-controlled plunge pools on the Spa deck, a new partnership with internationally recognized ESPA, and recent refinement of the Senses Spa area with additional manicure and pedicure areas. The PURE: Yoga & Pilates studio, with its serene interiors, offers guests a selection of included classes and new additions to holistic therapy, sessions from Aerial Yoga, TRX, Mindfulness meditation and unique Tibetan sound bowl healing classes.

Guests can cruise with complete confidence knowing that Scenic Group’s dedicated Health & Safety Steering Committee ensures all guests’ wellbeing and safety is taken care of to the highest standard. All guests and crew must be fully vaccinated. On embarkation, all guests are given a Rapid Antigen test (no additional cost) and temperature checks are ongoing. Social distancing and use of air filter masks when moving around public spaces is asked of the guests. Scenic Eclipse’s near 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio means attentive and personalized service and the status of having up to 10 dining experiences and nine bars and lounges ensures plenty of open space. State-of-the-art HVAC systems provide 100% fresh air through a three-stage air purification process to the spacious all-balcony suites and public areas, while advanced HEPA filtrations, and rapid response protocols to any COVID-19 positive test contribute to the safety of all aboard.

The best adult cruises allow passengers to pursue relaxation, rejuvenation, and indulgence, undisturbed by tantrum-minded toddlers and other children potentially ruining your me-time groove. For when it's time to sail away from the stresses of life on land, we've pulled together the very best cruise lines for adults, plus their most exciting itineraries available for booking in 2024 and early 2025.

Note that while some of these lines are strictly adults-only, others are adults-oriented, meaning that they may have some well-behaved older children on board during school holidays but otherwise, rarely do. Formerly Crystal Cruises, the adults-driven luxury line was purchased by Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, then dramatically remodeled and reborn as Crystal. Its legions of fiercely loyal fans are largely back, as are many familiar crew who pamper passengers incessantly. Its two gorgeous ships, 740-passenger Crystal Serenity and 606-passenger Crystal Symphony , fairly ooze sophistication and style. Crystal renewed its partnership with Nobu Matsuhisa; the line's award-winning onboard restaurant Umi Uma presents the globally renowned chef’s only plates at-sea. These ships voyage most of the world, with inclusions like nearly all dining, alcohol, 24-hour room service, gratuities, butler service, and WiFi.

The sailing to take this year: Crystal Serenity offers a 12-day Cape Town to Tema, Ghana , visiting Namibia , Angola, and São Tomé, a dual-island nation dubbed Africa’s Galápagos. Incredible outings include climbing Walvis Bay’s colossal sand dunes and exploring São Tomé’s pristine forests with nearly 200 endemic species. Departs May 5, 2024, from $6,900 per person .

This adults-oriented luxury French line of small sleek ships include its six newest 184-passenger “Ponant Explorer” vessels, four 264-passenger expedition sister ships, and 32-passenger yacht Le Ponant . While many cruises are bilingual, sails in partnership with the prestigious Smithsonian Journeys are English-only. Count on some 44 such itineraries including onboard talks given by world-class experts, one excursion in each port, and other fare-included perks such as dining, alcohol, WiFi, and gratuities. So many Smithsonian Journeys compel, such as a nine-day Celtic Voyage, eight-day Cultural and Natural Treasures of Japan by Sea, and a nine-day Circumnavigation of Sicily.

The sailing to take this year: Hats-off to Le Champlain’s immersive Sicily voyage sailing roundtrip Valletta, Malta . Besides noted ports, this sail includes visits to Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Maltese isle of Gozo; and another UNESCO stunner, Lipari in the Aeolian Islands. The line's 2025 departures add Tunis as a further temptation. Departs April 14, 2024, June 2, 2025, and August 29, 2025, from $8,580 per person .

Seabourn, an ultra-luxury adults-oriented line, recently introduced twin polar-class expedition ships, 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit and Seabourn Venture, with exploration toys like submarines and a 24-expert team to guide and engage passengers. Luxe elements include all-suite accommodations, complimentary caviar, and eight dining venues. Seabourn’s five all-suite ocean liners include the two newest and most glam 600-passenger sister ships, Seabourn Ovation and Seabourn Encore . Seabourn fares include all the restaurants on board (including the new Mediterranean venue Solis on non-expedition ships), alcohol, 24-hour suite dining, dancing on deck, and caviar in the surf beach barbecues.

The sailing to take this year: Seabourn ships roam the globe, with knockout itineraries like a 12-day “Canary Island Jewels and Morocco” on Seabourn Ovation , sailing roundtrip Lisbon . Imagine sipping local wine in the westernmost Canaries, wandering lively souks in Tangier, and learning to cook delicious Moroccan specialties. Departs April 26, from $6,204 per person .

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Ultra-luxurious and opulent, this adults-oriented six-ship line is inclusive to the max: think business-class airline tickets for international flights, fine dining, all-suite accommodations, 24-hour suite service, alcohol, dining, valet laundry, gratuities, transfers, and some shore excursions. Multi-million-dollar art collections on the three newest ships stun. On brand-new 744-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur , revel in 1,600 masterpieces including multiple Picassos and a Fabergé egg, the first to reside at-sea. The entire ship’s design is jaw-droppingly beautiful and restaurants, like pan-Asian Pacific Rim and the French Chartreuse, excel.

Windstar Cruises

This luxe-minded, adults-oriented line counts six vessels that accommodate between 148 and 342 passengers. Three are tall-sails Wind Class ships; three are all-suite Star Plus Class yachts. All offer a relaxed, friendly on-board ambiance, with itineraries leaning into small ports, late-night departures, and port overnights . From the water sport platform, guests can kayak, paddle board, snorkel, or water trampoline. Besides the Caribbean and Mediterranean, Windstar ships also ply far-flung waters, from transatlantic crossings to cruises in South America and Iceland . Star Breeze now sails Tahiti voyages, cruising the unforgettable turquoise waters of French Polynesia year-round.

The sailing to take this year: “Tahitian Treasures and Magnificent Marquesas ” (the latter a cruise rarity) sails 14-days roundtrip Papeete, including visiting Paul Gauguin’s former home on Hiva Oa, exploring a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and ogling the Pacific’s largest Tiki sculptures. Scenic is an adults-oriented, ultra-luxury polar-class expedition line with two 228-passenger vessels, Scenic Eclipse I and Scenic Eclipse II . The ships feel sexy and sophisticated, with all-suite accommodations, butler service, up to 10 dining experiences, nine bars and lounges, and a huge spa with a yoga and Pilates studio. Expect numerous inclusions, like alcohol, dining, WiFi, gratuities, and shore excursions (other than helicopter or submersible rides) led by seasoned experts. Scenic explores the globe, emphasizing polar itineraries .

The sailing to take this year: The line recently introduced a Scenic Eclipse II Western Australia Kimberley region itinerary. Expedition highlights include coral islands with thousands of endemic birds, vertical waterfalls, and ancient Indigenous rock art. Sailing May until September, 11-day voyages between Broome and Darwin, Australia, begin at $11,730 per person .

Virgin Voyages

If you want to cruise with the cool kids, book an adults-only Virgin Voyages cruise. This line puts the hip in hipster; it calls cruisers sailors , is LGBTQ+-friendly, and attracts everyone from 20-something groups of friends to middle-aged-and-up couples. The premium line’s fares includes complimentary dining in a whopping 20 restaurants like Gunbae, a Korean bbq hotspot, WiFi, group fitness classes, and gratuities. Think high-energy happy campers, er, sailors, who celebrate with new tats done on board, many cocktails (don’t miss the Champagne Lounge), dance parties, pop-up circus performances, and hanging in port late-night. The three 2,770-passenger sister ships Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady , and Resilient Lady sail the Caribbean and Med.

The sailing to take this year: Find fast fun on Scarlet Lady five-day roundtrip Miami cruises, like “Fire and Sunset Soirées,” with a private Beach Club experience in Bimini, Bahamas ; it’s abuzz with private cabanas, beach bonfires, and floaty pool parties. Departures March 20, April 17, May 1, December 11, from $1,620 per person .

An adults-oriented ultra-luxury line, Silversea offers both polar-class expedition ships and ocean liners that sail to more than 900 destinations across all seven continents. Fares include all-suite accommodations, butlers, caviar service, gratuities, alcohol, most dining, and some shore excursions (all outings on expedition ships).

The sailing to take this year: Among itineraries, consider cruising Antarctica on board the intimate and glam 200-passenger (in polar regions) Silver Endeavor . With spacious suites, four restaurants, and a passionate expedition team, the ship sails the region between late October 2024 into March 2025. Six-day itineraries include roundtrip flights to Antarctica, bypassing the often-turbulent Drake Passage. Sailing six to 18-days roundtrip from Puerto Williams, Chile, starting at $12,150 per passenger .

On this adults-only cruise line, choose between river , ocean, and expedition vessels. Viking ships sail all seven continents. Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris explore the poles but also sail Niagara, the Great Lakes, and Chilean fjords. While categorized as upper premium, Viking’s ocean and expedition fleet includes many amenities, such as one shore excursion per port, all dining, afternoon tea, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, spa Thermal Suite access, WiFi, and 24-hour room service.

The sailing to take this year: Since Viking is Norwegian, start with a “Viking Homelands” cruise. The 15-day voyages on various 930-passenger ocean-going sister ships sails between Stockholm and Bergen, Norway, and visits six countries including Poland, Denmark, and Germany. The packed itinerary includes sailing fjords and hiking remote Swedish islands, to touring Berlin and Copenhagen . Departures from May 3, 2024 to August 36, 2024; from $7,999 per person.

SeaDream Yacht Club

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Discovery Yacht Features 

Scenic Eclipse has ten exquisitely designed decks. The heart of the Discovery Yachts can be found on Deck 4 and 5, showcasing a variety of dining experiences, bars, lounges, and the theatre. Nestled between Decks 5 and 9 are the indulgent ultra-luxury suites. 

Deck 10 is as an idyllic place for relaxation, featuring a bar, cabanas, and Vitality Pool. The expansive Senses Spa is located on Deck 6, while the Yacht Club, gym, yoga, and Pilates studio are on Deck 7. 

For panoramic views, guests can ascend to the Observation Deck and Lounge on Deck 5. On Deck 7, you can visit the open bridge, to meet the navigation team and gain first-hand insight into the ship's operations. 

Deck 3 houses the Discovery Centre. Here, our guests can store their polar boots as well as prepare for kayak and stand-up paddleboard excursions. Zodiac and tender embarkation also take place from this deck.
