Residents stroll riverbed in Prince George amid drought

Families, pets explore the sand and rock normally buried under the fraser, nechako rivers' rushing water.

A man walks his dog in a dry riverbed.

Social Sharing

Water in the Fraser River where it meets with the Nechako — itself not much more than a trickle in some spots — is at an all-time low, according to the River Forecast Centre.

It's a dramatic reflection of drought in Prince George, and of the dry conditions that have plagued much of the province since the summer of 2023 in what B.C.'s emergency minister has called "a sleeping giant of a natural disaster."

The riverbed has also created an impromptu park for adults, kids and pets to explore the sand and rock normally buried under rushing water.

"This is sad and great at the same time," said Prince George resident George Soares, as he walked along Goat Island, a small hill typically surrounded by waters from the Fraser River which, right now, is completely dry land.

"I've never seen it this low before."

A bridge over dry land.

"It's terrifying to see the river almost completely gone," John Grove, another resident, said.

"To be able to walk all around is just insane to me.... I would love to see more of a river here."

  • B.C. drought brings increased flood risks, far-reaching damage, experts warn

The area they are walking is near the CN Rail Bridge, built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1914, which still has the ability to open to allow shipping vessels and sternwheelers to pass through, although there hasn't been a need in decades.

It's also on the land of the Lheidli T'enneh, a First Nation whose name means "people of the confluence" — a reflection of the importance the joining of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers have had to the nation and the region for centuries.

A tree in a flood.

Spring is when the city typically braces for flooding, as a melting snowpack sends water levels surging along the rivers — but this year, that is not going to be a concern for residents, says hydrologist Jonathan Boyd with the River Forecast Centre.

"The likelihood of any flooding this year [in Prince George] is very low if not just almost zero because of how low [the water level] is," he told CBC News.

  • Low snowpack could impact power generation in B.C. in late 2024

With snowpack levels  44 per cent below normal in the Upper Fraser River Basin, which includes Prince George, Boyd says he fears drought could worsen this year.

Currently, the basin has been experiencing drought level four on a five-point scale , where ecosystem or socio-economic impacts are  likely  to occur.

Water levels also low at Nechako Reservoir

In an email to CBC News, mining giant Rio Tinto — which manages the Nechako watershed through reservoir operations, and diverts water to power its aluminum smelter — confirmed the reservoir is at an all-time low, operating at about 24 per cent of capacity.

"[We] are actively addressing the ongoing impacts of drought on our operations by proactive generation reduction and working with B.C. Hydro to ensure residents and businesses in the region receive the power they need when they need," the statement reads.

The 233-kilometre-long Nechako Reservoir typically contributes about half of the annual discharge in the Nechako River in Prince George, says Stephen Déry, environmental science professor at University of Northern B.C., and Rio Tinto senior industrial research chair on climate change and water security.

A child and a dog walk through a puddle.

Boyd, with the River Forecast Centre, says reservoirs play an important role in responding to natural disasters like flood and drought.

"If we ever were to end up in a situation where we had very high snow and a rapid melt, the reservoir can actually hold water back and prevent catastrophic flooding," he said, adding that during prolonged dry spells, additional water is typically released from reservoirs into the rivers.

A man and his dog.

Déry says "with the reservoir being so low, we cannot foresee water being essentially released into [the river during spring]."

He blames climate change for the unprecedented drought conditions.

"I think it's an emerging pattern associated with climate change and a combination of factors," he said.

"We had El Niño, that was quite prominent. The sea surface temperature in the tropical Pacific Ocean were above average for the last two years,... which have led to very warm temperatures and the ongoing drought."

  • Low B.C. snowpack levels are an ongoing concern, province says
  • New study links drought to rise in overnight wildfire activity

He adds that El Niño is now on its way out, and "near-neutral El Niño conditions" can be expected.

"We might actually see average precipitation this summer, perhaps above average coming into the fall and winter."

New sonar images show remnants of Baltimore bridge collapse amid challenging recovery plan

New underwater sonar images are capturing the wreckage of the francis scott key bridge at the bottom of the baltimore's patapsco river.

riverboat pictures

New underwater sonar images are capturing the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge at the bottom of the Baltimore's Patapsco River.

The U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command captured remnants of the bridge, which collapsed on March 26 when a massive commercial vessel named Dali rammed into it after losing power. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shared images on X (formerly Twitter) Wednesday.

The scans show the metal framework of the ship that is set to be removed by the end of April to make way for a 35-foot-deep, 280-foot-wide Limited Access Channel, according to the Corps of Engineers.

"The Limited Access Channel will permit larger ships in and out of the @portofbalt, such as marine tugs, Maritime Administration (MARAD) vessels, and those used for Roll-on/Roll-off shipping," the Corps said on X.

Images illustrate difficulty of salvage operation

The Corps of Engineers previously revealed sonar images in an April 2 Facebook post showing the sheer magnitude of the immensely challenging salvage operation.

Divers primarily used the imaging tool CODA Octopus to examine the site but visibility was "clouded to just one to two feet because of the four to five feet of mud and loose bottom of the Patapsco River." They're unable to use videos as they would fail to capture anything but darkness.

"Divers are forced to work in virtual darkness, because when lit, their view is similar to driving through a heavy snowfall at night with high-beam headlights on," the post said. "So murky is the water, divers must be guided via detailed verbal directions from operators in vessels topside who are viewing real-time CODA imagery."

When did the Baltimore bridge collapse happen?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge  collapsed on March 26  after a massive cargo ship rammed into it, causing the structure to crumble into the Patapsco River and blocking access to the Port of Baltimore .

Bridge collapse death count

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge killed six workers  who were patching potholes. The workers came from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.

Two victims were recovered and identified as as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26. Hernandez was living in Baltimore and Castillo was living in Dundalk, Maryland. They were found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water around the bridge's middle span.

'Thousands of tons of debris'

Efforts to restore port of Baltimore began on March 31 after a crane removed a 200-ton piece of the bridge blocking the entry into the Port of Baltimore. Gov. Wes Moore said the piece was among thousands of tons of debris that remain in the river and above the ship.

About 1,100 Corps of Engineers personnel have been deployed to help reopen the largest vehicle-handling port in the U.S using highly specialized equipment.

The keel of the Dali also rests at the bottom of the harbor, weighed down by part of the bridge, further complicating efforts to clear the channel, according to a senior U.S. official.

Storm Kathleen: 200 evacuated after River Arun overflows in West Sussex

County hit by severe flooding as forecasters warn heavy rain and strong winds will continue to batter parts of UK

Beach huts have been blown into the sea, more than 200 people have been evacuated and fire services have warned people affected by flooding to get to high ground as Storm Kathleen hit Easter holiday hotspots along the south coast.

Evacuations in West Sussex went ahead after the River Arun overflowed its banks, with further warnings that flooding may increase throughout Tuesday.

About 180 people were rescued overnight from Medmerry Holiday Park in Earnley and about 15 from Ferry Road and Rope Walk in Littlehampton, West Sussex county council said. One person showing signs of hypothermia was taken to hospital.

The council said evacuations of about 20 people were under way on Tuesday morning from Bracklesham Caravan and Boat Club.

In Falmouth, Cornwall , beach huts were washed into the sea by the strong winds and in Bournemouth, Dorset, huts toppled and inched towards the sea.

Forecasters warned that heavy rain and strong winds would continue to batter parts of southern England, western Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland over the next few days.

West Sussex fire and rescue service (WSFRS) said on Tuesday morning that its Littlehampton incident had been stood down.

Jim Mackay, WSFRS’s group manager, said the next high tide was due around lunchtime and would be “slightly higher than the one we’ve had the other night”.

He warned anybody stuck or trapped by flood water to stay on high ground and contact the emergency services by calling 999.

Julie Everitt, 67, a Littlehampton resident, told the Daily Mail that she had seen two toilet bowls float down her road. She said she had placed sandbags around her front door shortly after her electricity went out at about 11.30pm on Monday, adding thatshe was concerned about further flooding on Tuesday, and her power supply had not returned.

She said: “I was petrified because I was out in the front garden just to see how far it was coming up and then all of a sudden, there was a surge.

“I ran down my side gate and it was too late because by the time I got in my garden, my garden was flooded and I was about two inches deep, treading in it and it was the smell as well, because obviously all the drains …

“There’s a yard over the road and there are two toilet systems sitting there and they floated down the road – two porcelain toilets, that’s how fierce it was.”

She added: “We’re just standing around. You can’t do much, we’re just waiting for the midday tide to come in to see what that’s going to bring and … we’re just sitting waiting around for the big one tonight.”

A resident of Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex said flooding in the town was “scary and unprecedented”, after he stayed up until the early hours putting flood defences around his property.

Gareth Theobald, 36, told the PA news agency: “I was out the front of the building and watching the water just get higher and higher and higher, and then helping or stopping traffic going into the flood waters, and then just watching in disbelief as the whole of Brighton Road and our multimillion-pound development was being engulfed by flood waters.

“The amount of water is scary and unprecedented and those houses opposite our development are lower-ground flats and they were all flooded under a foot or so of water.”

He said he saw cars “driving into the floods at speed as well and getting stuck”.

West Sussex county council said water levels had not yet receded and flooding might increase throughout the day. On Tuesday morning, it said: “Those who have been evacuated remain displaced.”

A refuge centre for affected residents had been set up at Wave Littlehampton leisure centre, Arun district council said.

A yellow weather warning for the west coast of Wales is in place until 3pm on Tuesday, when “a spell of strong winds” will affect the region.

In Scotland , 20mm to 40mm of rainfall is expected in some areas until 6pm on Tuesday, while a few places could see as much as 60mm. Affected areas include Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth and Aberdeen.

Further rainfall is forecast in western Scotland between 9am and 10pm on Wednesday and may cause flooding, with 20mm to 30mm of rain expected in most places and 40mm to 60mm on high ground.

River Stabbing Suspect Reveals Why He Pulled Knife In Deadly Confrontation, Admits He 'Totally Lied' to Cops

riverboat pictures

The man at a center of a deadly tubing confrontation took the stand, recalling "reaching for [his] pocketknife" during the incident and explaining why he "felt like I was going to die" while being grilled on the inconsistencies with his version of events.

Nicolae Miu, the man accused of stabbing four victims and killing a teenager during a Wisconsin river confrontation, took the stand in his own defense as his trial continued Tuesday.

The deadly incident went down at Apple River in August 2022, with victims and prosecutors claiming 54-year-old Nicolae Miu pulled a knife on a group during a confrontation on the water, which was captured on video. Miu, meanwhile, contends he was acting in self-defense after being surrounded and taunted by the "drunk" group.

Isaac Schuman, 17, was killed, while Ryhley Mattison, A.J. Martin, Dante Carlson and Tony Carlson were all injured. Miu faces one charge of first-degree intentional homicide for Schuman's death, as well as four counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide for the injured parties; he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

On Tuesday, prosecutors also won a bid for jurors to consider second-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide and second-degree reckless homicide charges for Schuman's death, while considering attempted second-degree homicide, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and second-degree recklessly endangering safety charges for the injured.

Taking the stand on Tuesday, Miu admitted he "lied" to police about the knife used in the altercation. During his interrogation, he told cops he took the knife from one of his attackers, but admitted on the stand that it was his pocketknife, which he brought with him to the river that day. He added he had no intent to harm anyone. He also stated that, at no point, did anyone in the other group pull a knife on him.

During his testimony, Miu claimed he was looking for his friend's cell phone, when a number of people from another group began shouting at him, "Grown man trying to have sex with little girls. What the hell! What the f--k! He's a raper!"

riverboat pictures

Graphic Video of Apple River Stabbing Released, Disemboweled Victim Shows Injuries

He was adamant he didn't say anything to the group other than saying he was looking for a lost cell phone. He denied ever telling the group he was "looking for little girls," as some of them have claimed, and said he began to walk away from them until he noticed someone with a phone. It's then he said he re-approached, admitting he "rushed" toward them before stumbling on his knees and onto their tubes, losing his googles and snorkel in the process. This too is different from what he told police, as he initially claimed the group had stolen his snorkel during the confrontation.

Miu then said he was told he had "10 seconds" to get away from them, but he "ignored" them. Eventually, two women -- Madison Coen and Ryhley Mattison -- approached him and told him to get away from the group as well. He claimed Coen pushed him against his shoulder and chest and was getting in his face, "yelling at me." Ryhley, he said, had one of her arms on him and was "squeezing and pushing me back."

It's then Miu said his heart rate and breathing began to get "really high" and he felt for his knife in his pocket. "With my left hand, I pushed [Madison] away from my face ... I felt threatened," he said, adding that he didn't mean to harm her and didn't think he made contact with her. The other group has claimed Miu punched Madison in the face, sparking their response.

"I felt frustrated. I felt annoyed. They kept saying it over and over. It annoyed me and frustrated me," said Miu, who claimed the group continued to accuse him of being a pedophile and "saying things that are not true." He admitted to "reaching for my pocketknife" because "my fear was getting really high and I was getting ready to pull it out."

riverboat pictures

Police Bodycam Video Shows Chaotic Scene After River Stabbing: 'His Guts Are Hanging Out'

Miu said he was then punched in the face, telling the court he took out his pocketknife because he was "surrounded" and "it seemed like they were not backing away." He said he was then pushed to the ground, recalling being hit in the head and not being able to get out of the water. Miu said he used his knife because he "feared for my life" -- and felt like he wouldn't be able to even get up. He also recalled someone grabbing him by the throat -- after some of the victims had been stabbed -- and said he "felt like I was going to die," so he "reached out and stabbed" Schuman.

When asked if he was trying to "kill somebody," Miu said, "Absolutely not. I was just trying to defend myself ... I believe I would have been killed that day,"  He also recalled having diarrhea during the incident.

As for why he "walked away" from the altercation, he said he retreated back to his group so he could "feel safe." He also admitted he "tossed" the knife on the riverbank while walking to his friends. As for why he threw it away, he said he was "afraid" and "overwhelmed with fear" and he "didn't want to have anything to do with it."

During cross-examination by the prosecution, they questioned why he was looking for the cell phone on the opposite side of the river, where the other group was. They also wondered why he took the knife with him to search for the cell phone -- with Miu saying he initially "forgot" it was in his pocket. The prosecution also threw doubt on Miu saying he "stumbled" onto the group's tubes and continued to ask him how "angry" he felt during the incident. He insisted he wasn't angry.

Prosecutors also said he appeared to be feeling for his knife in his pocket before going over to the group and seemed to be reaching for it again before the two women approached him. They pointed out how, in video of the incident, he was holding the knife outside of his pocket before any hits or punches had been thrown. Miu was also asked whether he made "physical contact" with Coen before he was punched. "I may have," he said, adding, "I don't know if I touched her or not. It's possible that I did."

riverboat pictures

River Stabbing Suspect Claims 'Self Defense,' Reacts to Victim's Death In Interrogation Video

When asked about A.J. Martin getting stabbed, Miu said it happened "at the same time he hit me in the throat" and claimed he didn't intentionally pull the knife "up" through Martin's torso, but was falling backwards when it happened. Regarding Tony Carlson's injuries, Miu said, "I couldn't see, I couldn't hear, I didn't know who was punching me, touching me, shoving me, nothing, I was fearing for my life. I had milliseconds to think."

Of Isaac Schuman, who died from his injuries, Miu said, "He went for my throat and I defended myself." He also acknowledged Dante Carlson wasn't fighting with him and hadn't punched him before being stabbed. "I thought he was attacking me," said Miu.

Prosecutors also reiterated how he changed his clothes after the incident and didn't speak with authorities at all after they arrived on the scene.

A longer version of the arrest video was then shown to court for the first time, in which Miu says he heard "somebody got stabbed and I fit the description," but not mentioning anything about his involvement. "Our whole group was pretty interested in finding out what happened," he told Sheriff Scott Knudson, adding that he didn't see anyone injured and only heard "people screaming at each other." He also said he was sure the other people were "drunk" and "kids being kids."

Prosecutors accused him of "fishing for information" while "pretending" he didn't know what happened and said he had four hours to come up with a "story" to cover his actions. Addressing the many inconsistencies between his comments about the situation during his interrogation and the video shown in court, Miu said he was "confused" -- and admitted, again, "I lied. I totally lied ... I don't even remember the interview."

When presented with the knife used during the confrontation, Miu confirmed, "That's the knife I used to defend myself with, yes."

After Miu's testimony, the defense rested its case. Closing arguments will pick up Wednesday.

First week of Nicolae Miu's Apple River stabbing trial ends with testimony from his friends, coworkers

By Cole Premo , WCCO Staff

Updated on: April 8, 2024 / 8:15 AM CDT / CBS Minnesota

HUDSON, Wis. —  The first week of  Nicolae Miu's Apple River stabbing trial  has come to an end.

Miu, of Prior Lake, Minnesota, stabbed five people on the river in Wisconsin on July 30, 2022. A 17-year-old boy, Isaac Schuman, died in the stabbing and four others were injured. The victims ranged in age from 17 to 24 and were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

WATCH LIVE: Week 2 of Nicolae Miu's Apple River stabbing trial underway

The prosecution aims to prove that Miu, 54, was the aggressor. Miu's legal team is arguing he stabbed the five people in self-defense.

Miu is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in Schuman's death, and attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the stabbings of Ryhley Mattison, A.J. Martin, Dante Carlson and Tony Carlson. He pleaded  not guilty  to all  charges  in September 2022.

Gilma Constanza testifies

Due to technical issues with Court TV, video from the court was delayed.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524.jpg

The first witness of the day, Gilma Constanza, testified through a Spanish interpreter.

She was on the river that day and testified that she saw Miu discard something on the side of the river following the stabbings, but did not know what it was. She said he seemed "white and pale" after the stabbings.

Alba Torres testifies, video appears to show Miu tubing with his group after stabbings

Next up was witness Alba Torres, who also testified through a Spanish interpreter. She was part of the group that was tubing with Miu on the day of the stabbings. She said she had known Miu for five or six years before the stabbings and considers him a friend.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524-09-06-2429.jpg

She was asked about the moment that a cell phone was lost — which Miu claimed he was looking for on the river before the stabbings — and the disturbance that occurred afterward. She said she didn't see the altercation, but saw the aftermath.

Torres said she was told to call 911 because "something was going on." She said one person in their group, Eric Von Williams, went to help the injured. Williams testified earlier in the trial.

Torres said that Miu later returned to the group and appeared to look normal. At that point, they did not know that Miu had stabbed multiple people, but he told them that he had been pushed by a group.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524-09-03-5808.jpg

A cell phone video from Torres was shown that appears to show Miu, who had a jacket on, tubing down the river with the group after the stabbings, heading to the exit on the river. In the video, Torres believed a person on the shore may have been the suspect, but it turned out to be an employee of the tubing company.

Sergio Ruiz Leyva testifies

After a mid-morning break, Sergio Ruiz Leyva took the stand. Leyva, who spoke through a Spanish interpreter, was also with Miu's group on the day of the stabbings.

He said he remembered when one of the group members, Ariel, lost their phone. Ariel said it wasn't a big deal because he had insurance, but Miu insisted on trying to retrieve it.

Leyva said that Miu looked for the phone anyway.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524-09-59-3710.jpg

Leyva said he later saw the group around Miu and couldn't see much because there were so many people. But he said he did remember seeing a woman in a black leotard telling Miu to "go, go, go" and that he saw Miu push her. He said he later saw Miu get pushed to the ground.

He said he was watching from a distance because he didn't leave his tube to approach the group.

Leyva said, from his position, he could see some blood on some of the stabbing victims, but that it was hard to see from the distance. He said that one of the stabbing victims told a person in his group to call 911. He said he turned away from the victims because it was hard to look at.

When Miu came back to the group, Leyva said that he heard through another person in the group that Miu had his knife taken away. He said Miu looked "pale" when he returned, with his "eyes wide open." But not much was said after that. Leyva said Miu put back on his hat and jacket.

Tatiana Ruiz Leyva testifies

Tatiana Ruiz Leyva, who was with Miu's group on the day of the stabbing, gave a brief testimony on Friday morning. She also spoke through an interpreter.

She recalled seeing people with bloody injuries, but didn't see what led up to the incident. She said when Miu came back towards her group, he was acting normally.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524-10-51-5921-1.jpg

Titiana Ruiz Leyva also recalled hearing a girl yelling for help. She had a hand on her stomach, she testified. After seeing that, she said she called for police.

Ernesto Chaguez testifies

In a slightly unusual circumstance Friday, the defense called a witness: Ernesto Chaguez. The judge allowed Chaguez to testify because he needed an interpreter to testify, and the interpreter was in the courtroom Friday.

Chaguez said he had been friends with Miu for about 10 years, and Miu would regularly come over to his house. Miu was a handyman, he said, and often helped fix things around the home.

Chaguez said he asked Miu to bring his pocketknife during their tubing trip to help cut the cords at the end of the ride.

Chaguez recalled seeing a group of people shouting at Miu, and saw Miu in the water, and someone was hitting him. He heard Miu's wife, Sandi, say that Miu needed help. When Miu walked back towards him, Chaguez said he "looked worried and he was pale." Chaguez added that he had never seen Miu scared before. Chaguez recounted that while Miu was walking past him, he pointed at a man and told him to "stay there, stay there" in order to keep him away from Miu.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524-11-31-1528.jpg

Afterwards, the float down the river was totally quiet, he said. Nobody talked until they got to the exit, where they were met by police. The police came over and asked Miu to come with them.

During the prosecution's cross-examination, Chaguez clarified that he didn't see anything before Miu was in the water. He also didn't see any injuries on Miu.

Chaguez recalled telling police that Miu is "a big guy, he was in the army, he doesn't need a knife to defend himself." Chaguez wasn't completely sure about Miu's military service, but knew that Miu lived in a communist country where military service was mandatory.

The court then went on lunch break in the middle of the prosecution's cross-examination.

The prosecution continued cross-examination, pressing back on the fact that Chaguez told police that someone took Miu's knife out of his pocket. He told the officer that 17 times, the prosecution said.

The prosecution also walked through video footage which showed Chaguez entered the water near Miu, and asked to clarify who exactly he told to "stay there, stay there." Chaguez had a hard time remembering who it was, and also didn't recall seeing two victims, who were shown in the video.

During recross, the defense brought up Chaguez's English language proficiency, and he clarified that he preferred to communicate complex topics in Spanish. When he was speaking to the police officer on the day of the stabbing, he was speaking in English, Chaguez said.

There were times during his examination that he responded to questions in English, and the prosecution asked if he was comfortable speaking in English. Chaguez said that sometimes he understands, and sometimes he does not.

Finally, the defense asked Chaguez to clarify his statement about Miu serving in the military. Chaguez said he did not know how old Miu was when he immigrated to the U.S., and did not have actual knowledge if he ever served in the military.

Witness sequestration order

After Chaguez's testimony, the prosecution brought to the judge's attention that a key witness had not followed the court's order, and was watching a live stream of the trial.

The prosecution said they had given written and verbal instruction to the witnesses not to watch or consume any media surrounding the trial, as it could change their testimony. However, the next witness, Ariel Chaguez-Layet, refused to meet with the prosecution so was not aware of the instruction not to watch any media.

The defense said that they didn't give the sequestration order to the Spanish-speaking witnesses, which they told the judge was "an oversight."

The judge brought in the Spanish-speaking witnesses and told them that they were not to watch a live stream or any media analysis. All of the witnesses said they understood his order.

Ariel Chaguez-Layet testifies

Next on the stand was Ariel Chaguez-Layet, Ernesto Chaguez' cousin. He'd known Miu for about 5 years and described him as a friend.

Chaguez-Layet described his experience on the Apple River on the day of the stabbing. He said he saw someone pushing Miu down into the water, and a woman came over after to hit him. On the other side of the river, he said he saw a man with an injury to the stomach.

He said he started walking towards the group because he was worried about Miu. The people around him were "slapping him with the hands," Chaguez-Layet described, through an interpreter. He said Miu defended himself, but because everything happened so quickly, he couldn't recall exactly what happened. At one point he said he got close to Miu and touched him on the arm.

However, the prosecution pressed him on the last point: Chaguez-Layet, when he spoke to police, said he never got close to Miu. Police later confronted Chaguez-Layet with a photo of him up close to Miu, and Chaguez-Layet told the prosecution that he denied to police that he had seen anything up close.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524-15-31-1228-1.jpg

The prosecution also asked if Chaguez-Layet was out in the hallway watching a live stream of the trial. He said he was sitting on a bench on the other side of the hall, and denied watching a video. He also testified that he was told by the defense not to watch any media coverage of the trial.

Amber Lind testifies

The last witness on Friday was Amber Lind, a forensic scientist from the Wisconsin state crime lab.

She said she examined the DNA evidence from the case. She examined Miu's knife, which had strong support for DNA inclusion from Isaac Schuman and Dante Carlson.

inx-miu-trial-day-5-040524-15-55-0221.jpg

She also said that the knife was "uninformative" for Miu's DNA, even though it was something he carried around every day.

Day 4 recap

On Thursday, more body cam footage was shown  during the trial that captured the chaos as police arrived on the river.

The first footage on day four was from John Ferrell, a sergeant with the Somerset Police Department and licensed emergency medical responder. In the footage, people are seen walking up the riverbank, some crying and others yelling that people have been stabbed.

It wasn't shown on video, but Ferrell said he later assisted in CPR on Schuman and said responders needed to use a backboard on inner tubes to get Schuman to an ambulance.

nicolae-miu-arrest.jpg

St. Croix County deputy Benjamin Trebian's testimony offered the jury the first look at Miu's arrest.

Trebian's body camera footage, played in court, showed Miu in handcuffs. Officers can be heard verifying he matched the description of the suspect.

Trebian testified that he was given a photo of the suspect in trunks during the search, and when Miu was arrested he was wearing a shirt, hat and glasses, as well. Miu also had "cuts and nicks on knuckles and on his hands," Trebian said.

inx-miu-trial-day-4-040424-11-32-5000.jpg

Trebian also told the defense he "didn't notice any signs" of intoxication in his interactions with Miu. He told the prosecution Miu was "kind of in a trance-like state almost."

Mitchell Schaeppi, an investigator for the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office, testified that he found the knife used in the stabbing on the river ledge, on a "muddy section of a shoreline." The knife was closed, he said.

inx-miu-trial-day-4-040424-13-41-0212.jpg

Schaeppi opened a box containing the knife and showed it to the courtroom, entering it as evidence into the trial.

The prosecution is expected to call to the stand 44 witnesses over the course of the trial.
