From coastal cruising and exploring islands, to crossing oceans and learning celestial navigation, above all, we offer variety.

Our Crew & Experience

We’ve operated Sea Dragon throughout the Atlantic and Pacific for over 10 years! During that time, we’ve built an excellent reputation for safe, effective, and efficient worldwide adventure sailing voyages. Our experienced crew has covered tens of thousands nautical miles! Having developed a strong background in sailing education, and also skills to effectively and safely sail anywhere in the world, our crew are excited to have you on board and share their knowledge.

In our historical work as a research vessel, we have worked with some of the world’s leading researchers and institutions. Work conducted on board has spanned from microplastics to coral, water sampling to whales. We were an integral part of discovering the existence of microplastic pollution in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans! Additionally, we’ve supported many diving trips and aided in the finding of un-charted seamounts off the coast of Brazil. Moreover, we’ve helped in the search for Pacific “super reefs”, and acted as a film platform for television programs on humpback whales and marine toxicology. We’ve also spent time in fresh water, sailing to the center of the North American continent through the Great Lakes! Sea Dragon has quite a lengthy and impressive resume.

We sail throughout the world’s oceans aboard Sea Dragon, our 72ft expedition yacht. Sea Dragon was built as one of twelve steel ships for the British Steel Global Challenge (Hull CB 37), the toughest yacht race in the world. She has circumnavigated the world twice (both times upwind in the Southern Ocean) as CB37 before being renamed as Sea Dragon with Pangaea Exploration. Sea Dragon has gone through extensive refits to become more suitable as a liveaboard adventure, teaching, and research platform. However, she maintains her true rugged heritage. She’s capable of carrying 15 people on unsupported voyages, up-to two months in length, in any of the world’s oceans! Maybe we’re biased, but we’re impressed by her every day.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four Canadian mariners on Saturday after their luxury yacht the Moon Dragon capsized about 140 miles from Wilmington, North Carolina.

On Saturday afternoon, around 12:18 p.m., the Coast Guard Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia received an emergency signal from the Moon Dragon, a yacht that charters between the Mid-Atlantic and the Virgin Islands, USCG said in a new release .

A rescue operation was immediately launched and when rescue teams arrived on scene, they spotted the overturned 60-foot catamaran and a covered life raft. All four passengers were found safe and uninjured in the raft, said the USCG, adding that they had used a radio to contact and request assistance.

A Jayhawk helicopter was sent from Elizabeth City, North Carolina to retrieve the stranded mariners. Once on scene, the Jayhawk crew safely hoisted all four people aboard and took them back to Elizabeth City, where they underwent medical assessment.

Video footage from the rescue shows a crew member pulling up a passenger on a "basket" back to safety.

What happened to the Moon Dragon?

The rescued mariners said that their vessel's port and starboard side hatches broke causing water to enter the catamaran and cause catastrophic flooding, which forced them to abandon ship. Winds were reported to be at 35 mph and seas at 11 to 12 feet.

USCG said that the Moon Dragon remains partially submerged and that the Coast Guard is "issuing a hazard-to-navigation" safety broadcast to notify mariners transiting in the area.

Being prepared on sea

“The ocean is unpredictable and unforgiving, and this case represents perfectly the value of being prepared at sea,” said Petty Officer First Class Austin Lang, said in a statement.

Lang emphasized the importance of the Emergency Position Indicating Radiobeacon (EPIRB) – devices that alert rescue authorities and indicate your location – a proper radio, and a functional life raft in saving the catamaran's passengers and ensuring the success of the rescue.

“These sailors had the right gear on board, it worked, they knew how to use it, and it’s because of that we were able to find them and bring them home safely,” said Lang.

What is the Moon Dragon?

The Moon Dragon is a charter catamaran, which is a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size. Moon Dragon has six luxury cabins with room for 10 passengers, according to Ocean Getaways , a “boutique” yacht charter company.

The luxury yacht boasts natural teak hardwood flooring, quartz walls in the shower, several fridges and freezers, ice makers, lounging areas, and multiple entertainment options. Prices started at $58,000 per week, according to Ocean Getaways.

DRAGON, a 79.9 m Motor Yacht built in Italy and delivered in 2019, is the flagship of Columbus Yachts . She is the only Columbus Classic 80m model.

Her top speed is 16.5 kn and she boasts a maximum range of 6000.0 nm when navigating at cruising speed, with power coming from two MTU diesel engines. She can accommodate up to 14 guests in 7 staterooms, with 19 crew members. She has a gross tonnage of 2200.0 GT and a 13.0 m beam.

She was designed by Hydro Tec , who also completed the naval architecture. Hydro Tec has designed 29 yachts and created the naval architecture for 49 yachts for yachts above 24 metres.

Her interior was designed by Francesco Guida , who has 68 other superyacht interiors designed in the BOAT Pro database - she is built with a Teak deck, a Steel hull, and Aluminium superstructure.

Mike’s victory comes on the back of a great weekend for Owen Clarke Design, winning the Ocean Race with their recently modified ten-year-old IMOCA 60 design, Offshore Team Germany. Dragon, a Class 40 is also more than ten years old, hull number #54, continually developed with new rig, sailplan and keel over the years to keep her competitive in the North American fleet.

Space Station

Dragon Spacecraft Docks to Station With New Science, Supplies

While the  International Space Station  was traveling more than 262 miles over the South Atlantic Ocean, a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft autonomously docked to station’s Harmony module at 7:19 a.m. EDT, with NASA astronauts Loral O’Hara and Michael Barratt monitoring operations from the station.

The Dragon launched on SpaceX’s 30th contracted commercial resupply mission for NASA at 4:55 p.m. EDT, March 21, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. After Dragon spends about one month attached to the space station, the spacecraft will return to Earth with cargo and research.

Among the science experiments Dragon is delivering to the space station are:

Monitoring Sea Ice Thickness and Wave Height

(Nanoracks-Killick-1) is a CubeSat that measures sea ice parameters using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reflectometry or reflected signals. This monitoring system could contribute to a better understanding of important ocean phenomena and improved weather and climate models.

New Sensors for ASTROBEE

The Multi-resolution Scanner (MRS) Payload for the Astrobee (Multi-Resolution Scanning) tests a new set of sensors to support automated 3D sensing, mapping, and situational awareness functions. These systems could support future Gateway and Lunar surface missions by providing automated defect detection, automated and remote maintenance, and autonomous vehicle operations.

Improving Efficiency of Quantum-Dot Solar Cells

The Nano Particle Haloing Suspension payload tests the controlled assembly of nanoparticles in a liquid solution. A process called nanoparticle haloing uses charged nanoparticles to enable precise particle arrangements that improve the efficiency of quantum-dot synthesized solar cells. Conducting these processes in microgravity provides insight into the relationship between shape, charge, concentration, and interaction of particles.

Observing Photosynthesis in Space

Advanced Plant Experiment-09 (APEX-09), also known as C4 Photosynthesis in Space, observes carbon dioxide capture and mechanisms in two types of grasses. Researchers hope to learn more about photosynthesis and plant metabolism changes overall in space. Knowledge gained could support development of bioregenerative life support systems on future missions.

These are just a few of the hundreds of investigations currently being conducted aboard the orbiting laboratory in the areas of biology and biotechnology, physical sciences, and Earth and space science. Advances in these areas will help keep astronauts healthy during long-duration space travel and demonstrate technologies for future human and robotic exploration beyond low-Earth orbit to the Moon through NASA’s  Artemis  missions and eventually Mars.

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

Travelling with Moscow’s metro is inexpensive. You can have a lot of joy for just a few Rubbles.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.
