Essential stewardess courses to distinguish you in the competitive market.

Essential Superyacht Stew/Stewardess Qualifications:

Certain training courses are essential for you to qualify for employment onboard certain types of yacht and superyachts. Additional training, specific to the role of the steward(ess) is beneficial to those who are new to the industry, would like to refine and broaden their skill set, or to those who would like to progress in their career as a yacht steward(ess).

Below is a list of courses you should complete as essential yacht stew/stewardess training in order to meet the general employment requirements for both private and commercial superyachts.

• STCW Basic Training
• Food Safety & Hygiene Level II
• Proficiency in Security Certificate

STCW Basic Safety Training

In order for you to legally obtain a job on a  commercial  superyacht (over 24m) you have to be certified with all four basic safety training modules, which are as follows:

• Personal Survival Techniques | PST (A-VI/1-1)
• Fire Fighting Fire Prevention | FFP (A-VI/1-2)
• Elementary First Aid | EFA (A-VI/1-3)
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities | PSSR (A-VI/1-4)

*Although this is a commercial requirement, it is generally seen as a requirement for employment onboard private vessels by yacht owners, captains, management companies or flag states. Failure to obtain STCW Basic training can severely limit employment opportunities.

Food Safety / Food Hygiene Level 2 Certificate:

All MLC complaint vessels require staff involved in food handling and catering activities on board to hold a recognised food safety certification. Due to the fact that there are a number of awarding bodies, accepted by different flag states, you are likely to encounter variations in this course. It is important to ensure that a) the course that you choose is MLC compliant and b) accepted by the flag state that you choose to work under. In order to meet the requirements of the majority of flag states, including the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency, it is recommended to pursue an MCA approved version of the course.

MCA Approved Food Safety / Hygiene in Catering Level II

Proficiency in Security Awareness / Duties Certificate

(STCW A-VI/6-1) & (STCW A-VI/6-1)

In order to work on an ISPS-compliant vessel, an STCW proficiency in security certificate is required. Proficiency in Designated Security Awareness (PSA)  is the minimum requirement, whereas  Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)  is required for crew who are designated security duties on such vessels.

Both courses can be done in class or online. *ISPS complaint yachts are commercial yachts larger than 500GT (Usually commercial yachts +50m in length)*

Additional / Beneficial Yacht Stew/Steward(ess) Qualifications:

These are additional courses and certifications specific to the duties associated with a yacht steward(ess).

Introductory Superyacht Stewardess Course:

This yacht stewardess crash course will better prepare you for the industry and teach you some basic skills and principals. Usually grouped with the above essential courses and offered as a combined training package. Stewardess courses are useful for people with no transferable skills that are unfamiliar with the industry. Although these courses are helpful and should improve your chances of gaining employment, they may not necessarily be accredited or internationally recognised. Although the Syllabus is dependant on the training provider, similar topics are usually covered. These yacht steward(ess) courses are available in both online and in-class formats.

GUEST Hospitality Steward / Stewardess Training Program:

The G.U.E.S.T Hospitality program is accredited by the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) who are recognised by the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). The program provides interior yacht crew with a clearly defined training routes upon which to grow a career upon. The hospitality program, tailored towards the role of the yacht steward(ess) is comprised of three levels of assessment ( Introduction , Advanced & Management Level) as well as specialist modules for specific duties.

The Hospitality Introduction Program is appropriate for entry level crew and consists of four modules that are as follows:

• Unit 23: GUEST Introduction to Yachting & Yachting Life​
• Unit 32: GUEST Basic Housekeeping & Laundry Service
• Unit 02: GUEST Basic Food & Beverages Service
• Unit 03: GUEST Basic Wine, Bartending & Mixology

Additional training, information and topics deemed as appropriate by the training provider in question may be included with the packages and/or modules offered. Both online and in-class training options are available.

Superyacht Stewardess & Steward Training Course requirements

Interior crew are typically required to work long hours and must be physically fit and able. You must be energetic and enthusiastic with an ability to work to a high standard in all tasks. Some previous experience in hospitality is a great bonus, but not at all necessary to join the training. Also if you have aligned experience in beauty, food and beverages, catering, wine and art appreciation, massage, sports and training, these extra skills will also be useful in your career progression.

You must have an ENG1 seafarer medical fitness certificate to work at sea ( Find out more about the ENG1 Medical Certificate ).  Whilst it’s not essential to hold your ENG1 to complete your training with UKSA, it is required to hold this to secure work in the industry. For this reason, we recommend all students gain their ENG1 before they attend training.

How to Become a Yacht Stewardess: The A-to-Z Quick Start Guide

The a to z of how to become a yacht steward/ess.

In the first half of my book, The Insiders’ Guide to Becoming a Yacht Stewardess , I discuss the yachting industry and give you insight into what this world is all about. I also spend quite a few chapters discussing what both crew life, and the work, is like. I promise it’s a fun and fascinating read, and it will appeal to many people — even those just curious to learn more about this exclusive world of superyachts. I cover who owns them, who travels on them, how much they cost, what destinations they visit, and even what they’re like inside.

BUT, if you are eager and ready to become a part of the yachting industry, then Part II of my book is for you. In it, you will learn the step-by-step process for acquiring a yacht stew position, if not any entry-level position onboard a yacht, including deckhand, chef, and engineering positions. In the end, I think you’ll be shocked to discover just how straightforward it is to land one of these dream jobs. Training is key, professionalism is required, and before you’re convinced you should give it a go, please make sure you have the right intentions. While the benefits that accompany this job are plentiful, being a yacht crewmember requires a LOT of hard work .

While I recommend grabbing a copy of my book for the nitty-gritty details, I can quickly chart your course here. I am going to throw at you, in an “a, b, c” fashion, what I consider to be the main action steps to get you from where you sit now to your first stewardess position (or nearly any entry-level crew position) on a luxury yacht. The order of these steps might vary, but what I want you to glean from looking down the list is just how uncomplicated the process really is for how to become a yacht stewardess or steward .

And not to worry, if you buy the book , I expand upon every step throughout Chapters 6–11, along with delivering practical, insider advice on how to get hired in a short period of time. You will see which chapters contain that information below.

Use The Quick Start Guide as a checklist reference as you prepare to take your own leap into what I hope will be a well-lit path.

Are you ready? Here goes:

• Assess your skills and determine whether or not this opportunity is for you. (Chapter 6)
• Find storage for your major belongings and plan to pack up what you’ll need because you’re going away for a while! (Chapter 8)
• Select the hiring port where you will conduct your job search, which you will determine based on convenience to your set of circumstances, as well as on the time of year. (Chapter 8)
• If you do not already have a passport, apply now! (Chapter 8)
• If you are a non-U.S. citizen, you need to apply for a B1/B2 visa before leaving your home country. (Chapter 8)
• Prepare a preliminary résumé/CV highlighting your applicable skills and work experience, along with your special abilities, talents, and interests. (Note: I’ll explain what a CV is in Chapter 10.) A cover letter is optional, but it is a nice touch. And make sure your social media profiles project you as a reliable person to hire. (Chapters 6 and 10)
• Compile a list of preliminary work references to include with your résumé/CV submissions. (Chapter 10)
• Have a headshot photo taken of yourself (or use an existing one) to include with your résumé/CV submissions. (Chapter 10)
• Research the yacht-crew training schools in your chosen hiring port, and find out their respective STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) Course schedules ahead of time. You should plan to arrive in town when courses are being offered and can accommodate you. The same holds true with any optional preparatory classes you plan on taking, such as a specialized stew training course. (Chapter 7)
• Research yacht-crew housing options in your chosen hiring port, and call ahead to check availability for the date you plan to arrive. Consider booking your initial accommodations once you’ve determined your STCW Basic Safety Training course dates and made your travel arrangements. (Chapter 8)
• Send preliminary e-mails to the yacht-crew recruitment agencies that you hope to register with before you make your move. Simply introduce yourself, let them know you will be coming in to meet them soon, and tell them your planned arrival date. Consider sending along your résumé/CV in advance, with expected course-completion dates listed. If possible, go ahead and schedule your personal interview. (Chapters 9 and 10)
• Book that airplane ticket, and move to a hiring port. (Chapter 8)
• Once you are physically in a hiring port, go meet with the agencies. I recommend registering with a minimum of two crew recruitment agencies to get started. The crew agents will want to interview you when you arrive, so dress the part, and be ready to sell yourself as a serious job candidate. If you haven’t already e-mailed it in advance, hand them your résumé/CV and get their feedback. Make any necessary updates or adjustments that the crew agents suggest. (Chapters 9 and 10)
• If you have not already done so, enroll in, take, and complete a five-day STCW Basic Safety Training Course from an accredited training school. (Chapter 7)
• Let the crew recruitment agencies know when you’ve completed your STCW training, and update your résumé/CV accordingly. (Chapter 10)
• Consider enrolling in a specialized steward/ess training course (highly recommended!) to increase your chances of getting hired fast. Completing this training really can be the deciding factor on whether or not you are offered a position as an entry-level stew. (Chapter 7)
• Look for day work at local marinas and shipyards in your hiring port. Going boat to boat letting captains and current crew know you are available for work could even lead to a full-time position. This is referred to in the industry as “dockwalking.” Much more on this later. (Chapter 9)
• Seek out alternative job-finding methods such as classified “crew wanted” ads in the yachting newspapers and trade publications as well as on their websites, public bulletin boards in well-known yachting establishments, and by networking with people in your crew house and at local yachtie hot spots, such as bars and restaurants. Not to worry, I’ll supply that list, too. (Chapter 9)
• Update your résumé/CV and referral list with all the new training and day-work experiences you accumulate. This includes acquiring and passing along to the crew agents reference letters from captains or supervisors from any yacht that hires you to do day work for a period of three or more days. (Chapters 9 and 10)
• Keep checking in with the crew agencies as often as possible (which you can do online via their websites and/or their social-media presences), to remind them of your availability and update them on your own efforts to find a job. (Chapter 9)
• NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK! (Chapters 7–10)
• Take advantage of all interview opportunities that initially come through from the agencies or by other means listed above. (Chapter 10)
• It may not be the case for everyone, but if you’re able to interview with several yachts before accepting a position, be selective! (Chapter 10)
• Think overnight before accepting a position. If you are not interested, let the hiring party know as quickly as possible.
• Accept your first job, and get ready for an extraordinary, life-altering experience! (Chapters 10 and 11)

How to Become a Yacht Stewardess / Steward: An Experienced Insiders Guide

If you’re wondering how to become a yacht stewardess / steward, you’ve found the perfect starting point.

I’ve personally reaped the rewards of 10 magnificent years in the industry, where I started out as a yacht stewardess and worked my way up to Chief Stewardess. This has motivated me to help people like you that are wondering how to become a yachtie .

My goal here is to equip you with the best resources and knowledge for how to become a stewardess on a yacht. Make sure you follow these steps to ensure you successfully land your first job.

Yacht Steward / Yacht Stewardess Job Description

As a Yacht Stewardess or Steward, you are responsible for all the interior operations of the vessel. This will include tasks such as housekeeping, laundry and high-end food and beverage service.

Interior Tasks Include:

• 5 star food and beverage service
• Flower arranging
• Table scaping
• Laundry Care
• Interior housekeeping
• Updating interior inventories
• Accounting and budgeting
• Liaising with guests and co-ordinating activities

1. What Qualifications Do You Need to be a Yacht Stewardess or Steward?

In order to become a stewardess on a yacht, you will need to have an STCW Certification and pass an ENG1 medical.

The STCW (Standards of Training and Certification of Watch keeping) is an internationally mandated course and a minimum requirement for anyone who wishes to work on a yacht.

Throughout the training, crew members will acquire the necessary skills to handle emergency situations and ensure the safety of all onboard. They will also learn safe working practices to ensure the safety of themselves and their fellow crew members.

In 2010 the STCW convention added a new module requirement to the basic safety training, so ensure that you do the additional Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) module which takes one extra day.

This STCW course is comprised of 4 modules, takes 5 days to complete, and is valid for 5 years. The modules include:

• Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
• Fire Fighting and prevention (FFP)
• Elementary First Aid (EFA)
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)

If you aim to work on vessels of +50m in size you may also need to hold the PDSD (Proficiency in Designated Security duties) course. This is a one-day online course for anyone who may be involved in security duties such as being a watch keeper.

To work on a yacht, you must undergo a basic medical examination called an ENG1. This assessment is performed by a doctor certified by the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) to ensure that you are healthy enough to work on a yacht.

2. Recommended Courses if You want to Become a Yacht Stewardess / Steward

In order to become a Yacht Stewardess or Steward you do not necessarily need to hold any other courses or certifications. The courses you choose to do would be more so to boost your confidence and gain better insight into being a stewardess on a yacht.

Hood Hygiene and Safety Level 2

Although this course is not mandatory, I highly recommend you do it as most vessels require anyone handling food (Stews included) to hold this certification. There are a few variations of the course so just ensure that the one you do is MCA approved.

The purpose of this certification is to equip crew members with the skills to assume personal accountability for food safety. This involves understanding the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in both personal work areas and food preparation.

Introductory Yacht Steward/ Yacht Stewardess Training

These courses are generally held over 5 days, and include everything you need to know about how to get into yachting as a Stewardess or Steward, as well as what your job will entail.

You will learn all the basic elements of housekeeping, laundry, service, floristry, wine knowledge, and onboard living etiquette.

These courses are not essential, but extremely helpful in having you better understand what will be required of you if you want to become a Yacht Stew.

3. Create the Perfect Yacht CV

If you are wondering how become a Yacht Stewardess with no experience, you are going to need to make sure your Yacht CV stands out from the rest.

Besides a well-laid out resume, you also need to highlight why you are the best candidate for this specific job that you are applying for. Be sure to highlight ANY transferable skills you may have to offer the industry. This could be hospitality experience, floristry, baby-sitting, yoga, or maybe you are a masseuse.

4. Apply for your Visa if Necessary

To work as a stewardess on a Super Yacht, you will need to look into your personal situation and passport to identify which visa you need.

B1/B2 VISA – Needed to enter the United States and surrounding waters

Shengen Visa – Needed to enter Europe for the Mediterranean season

5. Locate Yourself in the Right Place at the Right Time

Once you are ready to head over to a yachting hub, you need to consider the time of year you are going. Ideally, you want to arrive a few weeks before the season starts. There are 2 seasons in yachting:

The United States and Caribbean Winter Season (November/December to March/April)

The biggest hub for yachting in America is Fort Lauderdale, and in the Caribbean, it is Antigua and St Maarten.

Please note that if you are not a green card holder or US citizen, I do not recommend flying into America and actively seeking work. This is illegal and could get you into trouble.

The Mediterranean Summer Season (April/May to September/October)

If you’re looking for the ideal spot in the Mediterranean, consider Antibes in the South of France. It’s a top yachting hub with plenty of crew houses and yacht agents. Plus, you’re within easy reach of other sought-after destinations like Monaco and Nice.

Palma, located on the island of Mallorca, is also a major hub for yachting. It boasts numerous marinas, agents, and crew housing facilities.

6. Day Working and Dock Walking for a Yacht Stewardess / Steward

“Daywork” is when you get hired on a day-to-day basis, earning cash and assisting boats as they need extra help onboard.

Daywork is a great way to get experience as a Yacht Stewardess or Steward. If you make a good impression on the Captain and Crew, this could lead to a permanent position onboard or a referral to another boat.

“ Dock Walking ” is when you walk the docks of marina’s handing out your CV in the hopes of being hired for day work.

7. Sign up with Yacht Crew Agencies

You will want to sign up with as many yacht crew agencies as possible. Here are some popular agencies you should sign up with to get started: Luxury Yacht Group, Blue Water Yachting, The Crew Network, Cotton Crews, Yot Spot, Northrop and Johnson, HR Crew and Burgess.

To stay updated on job postings, it’s important to check social media platforms like Facebook. Join various yachting Facebook groups such as Fort Lauderdale Yacht Crew, Palma Yacht Crew, and Antibes Yacht Crew. You want to keep checking these groups regularly to stay informed.

Yacht Steward / Yacht Stewardess Salary

As with everything in the industry, your salary is largely dependent on the size of the vessel, your experience in the industry, as well as your qualifications.

A starting salary for a Yacht Stewardess or Steward can range from $2500-$3500. From there you can expect to see annual salary increments as you spend more time in the industry.

If you want to set some goals, a Chief Stewardess’s salary can be upwards of $5000 – $9000. Possibly even more depending on the size of the vessel!

On top of these very attractive salaries , you may also have opportunities to earn more money in the form of charter tips and annual bonuses.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Yacht Stewardess or Steward

The housekeeping stew.

The role of a Housekeeping Stew is to clean and maintain all aspects of the interior of the vessel . Guest cabins and common areas need to be meticulously cleaned with a lot of care and attention to detail. They will also be cleaning crew areas such as the crew mess and bridge.

Cleaning the vessel is not as simple as it seems. You will be vacuuming, dusting, polishing, tooth-picking grooves, ear budding ledges, and working with delicate surfaces.

The Laundry Stew

The Laundry Stew is responsible for laundering, stain treating, ironing, and maintaining laundry for the entire vessel. This includes crew uniform, crew personal clothing, guest clothing, beach towels, bath towels, table linens, rags, and kitchen tea towels.

The job of a Laundry Stewardess is in fact a very meticulous one, as you will be dealing with a number of different fabrics and colors. A simple mistake could cost the boss a very expensive dress.

The Service Stew

The role of the Service Stewardess is to ensure that every want and need of the guests is met. As far as service goes, you will be serving 3 meals a day, afternoon canapes, sunset cocktails, and all the other beverages and snacks in between.

You may also be required to head over to the beach to do service if there is a beach set up, or go for a cruise on the tender to serve drinks and snacks. A fun part of the role is also of course the tablescaping, which is usually most Stewardesses’ favorite aspect of the job.

At-home Tasks for Your Personal Growth

There are a number of things you can do to boost your confidence as a Yacht Stewardess or Steward before joining the industry. I can assure you that personal skills and experience come preferred over certifications.

Take your time to do research, link up to the social media accounts of established stewardesses and get involved with any work or transferable skills that will boost your resume.

All of these tasks, to list a few, can be practiced at home and will impress your future employer.

How to become a yacht stewardess? The fundamentals of the job

The job of a stewardess on a yacht is growing more and more , just like the global demand for crew members. Although the stewardess position may seem the most accessible, it remains a passionate and demanding job.

Indeed, the job of stewardess on a boat is one of the most diversified and versatile in the maritime industry . In addition to the role of service and reception, a stewardess must ensure the safety of passengers on board alongside the captain/skipper; and be trained to react in case of emergency.

In this article, Capt’n Boat lists the prerequisites for the position of stewardess on a yacht, and the missions that are entrusted to her.

1. What is a stewardess on a boat?

A stewardess (or hostess) on a yacht is a person in charge of the reception and comfort of the passengers on board , whether it is a yacht, a sailboat, a cruise ship or any other type of boat.

The word comes from the Latin “hospes”, which means “host” or “guest”. Over time, the meaning of the word “hospes” has evolved to also include “person who welcomes guests”.

The term “hostess” is therefore used to refer to a person who takes care of the guests or passengers of a ship, ensuring their comfort and well-being during their stay.

The duties of the stewardess may vary depending on the type of boat and the company, and will be detailed later in the article.

2. What professional training to become a stewardess on a boat?

In order to be a stewardess, only one certificate is required: the Basic Safety Training Certificate (BST) .

Obtaining the BST consists of 4 courses:

• Individual Survival Techniques,
• Basic firefighting training,
• Personal Safety and Social Responsibility,
• Medical First Aid.

The BST is valid for 5 years. Without this training, you cannot work as a stewardess on a boat.

An ENG1 certificate is also required, delivered by a doctor approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

There is no “degree” as such to become a stewardess on a boat. However, it is recommended to have experience in customer service or in the hotel industry. For stewardess/cook, some shipowners may require a Food Hygiene and Safety Training .

Of course, the best training is experience! Improve your skills on the job, go to sea, do missions! It is with experience that you will improve!

3. Qualities and skills expected from a stewardess on a boat

As a stewardess on a boat, it is important to have the following qualities in order to best manage customer requests:

• Communication skills : Be able to communicate effectively with passengers and crew.
• Service skills : Have a helpful and friendly attitude towards passengers to respond to requests quickly and efficiently.
• Organizational skills : Be organized to plan daily tasks, including cleaning of cabins and common areas, food and beverage supplies, and work schedules.
• For stewardess/cook => Culinary skills : Be able to prepare simple and varied meals to suit guests’ tastes and dietary restrictions.
• Safety knowledge : Yacht stews must have a basic knowledge of onboard safety procedures and be able to provide instructions to passengers in case of emergency.
• Ability to work as a team : With crew members and other personnel on board.
• Patience and resilience : Stewardesses must be able to deal with challenges and difficult situations that may arise on board, while remaining calm and professional.

Proficiency in multiple foreign languages is a major asset for this type of position.

4. The missions of a yacht stew

The stewardess is an important member of the ship’s crew and her main role is to take care of the passengers . Indeed, she makes sure that she is available to answer the customers’ requests and ensure their comfort on board. This includes:

• The reception of the passengers,
• preparation of the cabins,
• serving meals and drinks,
• organizing activities for customers,
• maintaining the cleanliness of the boat,
• management of supplies and stocks,

She also ensures the safety on board, with the other members of the crew.

It is important to note that the role of stewardess can vary depending on the size and type of boat, as well as the type of clientele. In some cases, you may also be responsible for preparing meals as a stewardess/cook.

Most of these missions correspond to the job of hotel staff, but here on a floating hotel!

Furthermore, depending on the size of the boat, the stewardess may have to work with a crew. This difference will have an impact on the number of tasks and may place you as the manager of the team on board.

5. Salary of a yacht stewardess 

The average salary of a stewardess on a ship depends on many factors, such as experience, the size of the ship, the area of navigation, the type of clientele and the duration of the service at sea. In the West Indies, Spain and Greece, the remuneration of a stewardess is around 200€/day. In France, it is about 250€/day. (Indicative daily wage based on the market standards observed).

As an example, for a one week cruise from Corfu (Greece) on a Lagoon 42 catamaran, count ~ 1400 €.

For a stewardess/cook, this remuneration is higher. You are free to negotiate your salary according to your past experiences.

Working as a yacht stewardess is a rewarding work experience. Although there is no specific background required, experience in the hospitality industry can be a plus.

If you like customer relations, teamwork, and above all, have a liking for the sea: this job is for you! An affinity with the maritime world is obviously required: you will be housed on the boat, so you will certainly be subjected to the swell and potential bad weather!

Hoe vind je een baan op een superjacht?

Zo’n vijf jaar geleden ben ik begonnen met het werken op superjachten. Sinds die tijd heb ik op zowel motor- als zeiljachten gewerkt en heb ik een goed beeld gekregen van de superjacht industrie. Lijkt werken op een superjacht jou ook wel wat, dan vraag je je vast af hoe je het moet aanpakken. Daarom deel ik in dit artikel het complete stappenplan voor het vinden van een baan op een superjacht.

Waarom zou je op een superjacht willen werken?

Zeker nu de serie Below Deck ook in Nederland te zien is, weten steeds meer mensen in Nederland dat je kan werken op een superjacht. Nou is Below Deck natuurlijk wel een reality show en is het werken op jachten niet helemaal hoe ze het laten zien in de serie. Maar toch krijg je door het kijken van de show wel een beeld over wat er allemaal bij komt kijken.

Als je echt wilt weten hoe het is om op een superjacht te werken, lees dan vooral ook dit artikel . In dat artikel zijn veel van de onderstaande stappen wat uitgebreider beschreven. Voordat ik je laat zien welke stappen je moet nemen als je een baan wilt vinden op een superjacht, zal ik je eerst vertellen wat werken op een jacht nou zo leuk maakt.

Salaris Als je werkt op een superjacht krijg je vaak een goed salaris. Mocht je op een charter jacht werken, een jacht die wordt verhuurd, dan kun je daar ook nog goede fooien bij optellen. Wat ook fijn is, is dat je geen huur hoeft te betalen, je basis toiletspullen voor je worden betaald (shampoo, zeep, tandpasta, scheermesjes enz.) en je te eten krijgt op de jacht. Je hebt dus een goede mogelijkheid om lekker te sparen.

Vrij zijn is ook echt vrij zijn Als je niet aan het werken bent, dan ben je echt helemaal vrij. Je hoeft niet meer schoon te maken, er is al voor je gekookt en de was is gedaan.

Helaas is het wel zo dat er altijd een persoon op de boot moet zijn. Dat betekent dat je af en toe ’s avonds of in het weekend een ‘watch’ hebt. Je moet dan op de boot blijven, maar je bent meestal wel vrij om te doen wat je wilt.

Je werkt op het water Er is geen beter kantoor dan die van een superjacht. Tenminste, ik vind het heerlijk om op het water te werken.

Compleet andere wereld Als je werkt op een superjacht, kom je in een compleet andere wereld terecht. Een wereld van miljonairs waar een weekje op een kleine jacht een vanaf prijs heeft van 50.000 euro en waar je samen met de andere internationale crew woont en werkt.

Reizen Maar weinig boten blijven op één plek. De meeste boten varen in onze zomer in de Middellandse Zee rond en veel gaan in onze winter naar de Caribbean of Florida. Werken op jachten is hard werken, maar als je dan een dag vrij hebt, ben je vaak in een mooie plek! Zo ben ik al voor mijn werk in Frankrijk, Spanje, verschillende Caribische eilanden, Haiwaii, Amerika en de Falkland eilanden geweest.

Natuurlijk is het niet alleen maar leuk om op een superjacht te werken en maak je vaak hele lange werkdagen, maar voor mij wegen de voordelen zeker op tegen de nadelen.

Waar heb ik mijn eerste superjacht baan gevonden?

Na vier jaar lang met veel plezier op St. Maarten gewoond te hebben, was ik klaar voor wat anders. Omdat St. Maarten een hub is voor superjachten in de Europese winter, kwam ik er mee in aanraking. Ik leerde mensen kennen die op superjachten werkten en ik besloot om ook voor een seizoen op een jacht te gaan werken.

Ik zei mijn baan op en in mei vertrok ik naar Antibes in Frankrijk. Na alles onderstaande stappen te hebben doorlopen, vond ik mijn eerste baan al na 1,5 week! Dat ik zo snel een baan vond had er onder andere mee te maken dat ik al ervaring had met het werken op boten en dat ik een duikinstructeur ben. Ook waren er in Antibes op dat moment gewoon veel banen voor meiden die op jachten wilden werken. Het vinden van een baan gaat zeker niet altijd zo snel. Wees dus voorbereid dat het echt wel even kan duren voordat je een baan op een superjacht vindt.

Stappenplan voor het vinden van een baan op een superjacht

Net als bij elke industrie waar je in wilt werken, moet je ook voor een baan op een superjacht een aantal stappen doorlopen. Dit is het ultieme stappenplan om een baan te vinden op een superjacht.

1. Bedenk wat voor werk je wilt doen op een superjacht

Afhankelijk van je interesses en je achtergrond zijn er een aantal verschillende rollen die je kunt vervullen op een jacht.

Als stewardess zorg je ervoor dat de boot er binnen super schoon en georganiseerd uitziet, je doet de was van alle crew en de gasten en serveert drankjes en eten aan de gasten zodat het ze aan niets ontbreekt. Als je heel goed kunt koken of misschien al werkt als kok, dan kun je er ook aan denken om chef te worden op een superjacht. Je kookt dan voor zowel de crew als voor de gasten. Dit is de best betaalde baan die je zonder extra opleidingen kunt doen aan boord.

Werk je graag met je handen en ben je niet bang om vies te worden? Wie weet is werken als een ingenieur dan wel wat voor jou.

Als je graag buiten bent en misschien wel geïnteresseerd bent om ooit kapitein te worden van een jacht, dan begin je vaak als deckhand . Je zorgt ervoor dat de buitenkant van de boot er perfect uitziet, vaart de gasten in de tender naar de plek waar ze willen zijn en als ze graag watersporten willen doen ben jij degene die ze daarmee helpt. Als je begint als deckhand kun je de ladder beklimmen, van bootsman, tot first mate en uiteindelijk kan je misschien wel kapitein worden. Maar daar heb je eerst ervaring en extra opleidingen voor nodig.

2. Zorg ervoor dat je spaargeld hebt voor 3 maanden

Net als in elke industrie vind je vaak niet meteen een baan. Om een baan te vinden op een superjacht, kun je het beste naar de plek toegaan waar de boten op dat moment zijn. Je hebt dan ook geld nodig voor een ticket, maar ook om ter plaatse de tijd zonder werk te kunnen overbruggen. Hoe lang het gaat duren voordat je een baan vindt, weet natuurlijk niemand. Er is ook altijd een kans dat je geen baan vindt. Zorg er dus voor dat je in ieder geval spaargeld hebt om drie maanden te kunnen leven in het land waar je naartoe gaat.

3. Haal je STCW en andere cursussen die je nodig hebt

De STCW is een vijfdaagse cursus die iedereen nodig heeft om op superjachten te gaan werken. Ook in Nederland kun je deze cursus volgen en de prijs daarvan is zo’n 1100 euro. Tijdens de STCW leer je over veiligheid aan boord en hoe je die kunt waarborgen, je leert over brand en hoe je die kunt bestrijden, je krijgt EHBO en je leert nog veel meer.

Daarbij zijn er per rol nog extra cursussen die je kunt of moet doen.

• Stewardess : voor de rol als stewardess zijn er geen verplichte andere certificaten nodig. Maar het zal je zeker een voorsprong geven als je een cursus hebt gedaan. Je kunt hierbij denken aan een wijn cursus zoals de WSET, een cocktail of een silver service cursus.
• Ingenieur: als beginnend ingenieur heb je in ieder geval een AEC1 nodig.
• Deckhand: een Powerboat Level 2 cursus zou ik zeker aanraden om te halen. Verder hoef je geen certificaten te hebben. Maar mocht je graag nog een cursus doen, dan kun je denken aan VHF Radio en de Competent Crew.
• Chef: als chef moet je een ‘health and hygiene’ certificate hebben. Je moet natuurlijk heel goed kunnen koken en het liefst een koksopleiding hebben gedaan.

4. Krijg een dokterskeuring – de ENG1

Iedereen die op zee wilt gaan werken moet een medische keuring ondergaan. Niet zomaar elke keuring, maar de ENG1. Er wordt onder andere getest of je niet kleurenblind bent, hoe je zicht verder is, of je gehoor goed is en er wordt gekeken naar je algehele gezondheid. De ENG1 is geldig voor 2 jaar en de prijs is verschillend. Ik heb mijn ENG1 de laatste twee keer in Amsterdam gedaan bij het Medical Center for Seamen. Maar er zijn meer plaatsen in Nederland waar je de Eng1 kunt doen. Het gaat dan om een Nederlandse variant, die ook erkend wordt.

5. Maak een superjacht CV

Als je op superjachten wilt werken, zul je je CV moeten aanpassen. Zo moet er ook een pasfoto in, waarop je het liefst een witte polo draagt en glad geschoren bent voor de heren. Verder vertel je in je CV onder andere wat voor soort rol je graag wilt op de boot, op wat voor soort jacht je wilt gaan werken, wat voor certificaten en opleidingen je hebt gedaan en wat voor werk ervaring je hebt. Ook als je nog niet op superjachten hebt gewerkt, heb je misschien wel andere banen gehad die je relevant kunt maken.

Andere zaken die belangrijk zijn om in je jacht CV te zetten:

• Roker of niet roker. Op sommige jachten word je niet aangenomen als je rookt. Lieg hier niet over, het komt eigenlijk altijd uit.
• Of je tattoos hebt of niet. Vooral op motorjachten, willen ze vaak niet dat de crew tattoos heeft op een zichtbare plaats. Wel wordt het wel steeds iets meer geaccepteerd en kun je het eventueel ook bedekken met make-up.
• Op dit moment nemen de meeste superjachten geen mensen aan die niet gevaccineerd zijn tegen Corona.
• Welke talen je spreekt.
• Vertel wat jouw hobby’s zijn en zet die voor je referenties (zie volgende alinea). Zeker als het hobby’s zijn die jij zou kunnen inzetten in je werk op een superjacht. Maar ook andere hobby’s zijn leuk om te noemen. Dan kan de kapitein inschatten of jij bij de boot en de crew past. Voor mij is dit altijd een belangrijk deel van de CV, omdat het echt wat over de persoon zegt.

Je CV zou niet langer moeten zijn dat twee pagina’s en het is goed om af te sluiten met referenties van je oude banen. Vraag altijd de persoon die je wilt gebruiken als referentie of dat ok is. Je zet dan bijvoorbeeld de naam en de contact gegevens van je oude baas in je CV. Crew agencies en kapiteinen van boten zullen je referenties bijna altijd checken.

Als je graag een voorbeeld van een superjacht CV wilt zien, kun je het beste ‘yacht CV examples’ opzoeken op Google. Je ziet dan een heleboel voorbeelden, waar je inspiratie kunt uithalen voor jouw eigen CV.

6. Schrijf je in op Facebook pagina’s

Veel banen op superjachten worden tegenwoordig aangeboden en gevonden via pagina’s op Facebook. Schijf je in en bekijk wat voor banen er aangeboden worden en welke vragen er worden gesteld. Dan heb je ook een idee hoeveel crew er wordt gezocht op de plekken waar de jachten zijn. Als je vragen hebt kun je die ook op de pagina’s stellen. Zorg wel altijd dat je even de zoekfunctie gebruikt voordat je je vraag stelt. Het wordt niet op prijs gesteld als je een vraag stelt die al tien keer eerder is gesteld en beantwoord.

Goede Facebook pagina’s zijn onder andere:

• Antigua Yacht Crew
• St Maarten Yacht Crew
• Palma Yacht Crew
• Antibes Yacht Crew
• Yacht Crew Jobs

7. Bedenk waar je op zoek wilt gaan naar een baan op een superjacht

Zeker als je op zoek gaat naar je eerste baan op een superjacht, zul je vaak geen baan vinden als je in je eigen land blijft. Je zult naar de plekken toe moeten gaan waar de jachten op dat moment zijn. Als ze nieuwe crew nodig hebben, hebben ze dat vaak nu nodig en willen ze ook vaak eerst persoonlijk kennis met je maken.

De meeste jachten zijn in de Europese zomer in Europa. Als je wilt werken op zeiljachten kun je dan het beste naar Palma gaan in Mallorca. Voor de motorjachten zul je naar Antibes in Frankrijk toe moeten gaan.

In de Europese winter gaan de superjachten of naar de Cariben of naar Florida toe. In Amerika is het illegaal om op zoek te gaan naar een baan als je niet Amerikaans bent. Dan blijft dus de Cariben over. De twee grote hubs zijn Antigua en St. Maarten. Antigua is voornamelijk voor de zeiljachten en St. Maarten voor de motorjachten. Al komen de zeiljachten ook op St. Maarten omdat er een aantal Regatta’s zijn op het buureiland St. Barths.

8. Zoek een crew house

De beste plek om te verblijven, is in een crew house. Je kunt een crew house het beste zien als een hostel voor mensen die op zoek zijn naar een baan op superjachten. Je zult tips horen van anderen en nieuwe vrienden maken. Ook is het fijn dat je per week kunt betalen en dat het betaalbaar is. Als je op de Facebook groepen naar crew houses zoekt, zul je de beste zo vinden. Dit zijn degene waar ik ben geweest:

• St. Maarten, Smilers Crew house is hét crew house in St. Maarten. +1 (721) 522-9894 – Elona
• Antibes, de beste zijn de The Crew Grapevine crew houses. Wel wat duurder dan de andere, maar ook fijner om te verblijven.

9. Schijf je in bij minimaal 2 crew agencies

Het is lastig om je eerste baan op een jacht te vinden via een crew agency, maar het is mogelijk. Een crew agency moet je zien als een uitzendbureau voor banen op superjachten. Je moet je vaak eerst online op hun website inschrijven. Dit kan best wat tijd kosten, omdat je veel informatie moet invullen en documenten moet uploaden. Welke crew agency je moet kiezen, kan ik je niet zeggen. Dit is namelijk best persoonlijk en hangt onder andere ook af of je een klik hebt met de personen die er werken.

Enkele crew agencies die ik fijn vind zijn:

• Yotspot is een pagina waar veel crew agencies banen op zetten.
• LuxYachts is een grote agency met meerdere kantoren in verschillende landen.
• Crew & Concierge is een agency waar ik zelf twee banen door heb gekregen. Maar ze hebben weinig banen voor crew zonder ervaring, dus dit is misschien een goede voor als je al wat ervaring hebt.
• Oceans Rivers op St. Maarten. River heeft zelf jarenlang op superjachten gewerkt en woont al jaren op St. Maarten.

10. Vlieg naar je gekozen hub toe

Nu is het tijd om de zoektocht echt te beginnen. Vlieg naar je gekozen bestemming toe! Het liefst trouwens met een zachte koffer, zodat je koffer makkelijk op te bergen is op de superjacht. Probeer ook niet teveel mee te nemen, want je hebt niet altijd veel ruimte voor je spullen in je hut. Makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan, dat weet ik zelf maar al te goed!

11. Bezoek een paar superjacht agencies

Eenmaal aangekomen op de bestemming is het goed om een paar superjacht agencies te bezoeken. Zorg ervoor dat (als het mogelijk is) je je online al hebt ingeschreven voordat je ze gaat bezoeken.

Voor mijn zoektocht naar mijn eerste baan vloog ik naar Antibes. Daar ben ik naar alle crew agencies toegegaan om kennis te maken en mij in te schrijven. Als ze je persoonlijk zien, is er een grotere kans dat je uiteindelijk een baan krijgt via een crew agency, probeer dus zeker langs te gaan als dat een optie is. Ook voor het zoeken naar crew agencies zijn de Facebook pagina’s ideaal, maar Google kan je ook een stuk op weg helpen natuurlijk.

12. Ga dockwalken in je zoektocht naar een superjacht baan

Dockwalken is eigenlijk best een gek concept. Het doel is om dagwerk te vinden, maar natuurlijk hoop je dat ze je voor langere tijd aannemen. Vaak hebben jachten een extra hand nodig in een druk seizoen net voordat er een nieuwe trip aankomt. Ze hebben dan iemand nodig om de binnenkant van de boot schoon te maken, bedden op te maken, het roestvrij staal op deck te polijsten of het dek een goede scrubbeurt te geven.

Als je gaat dockwalken wil je aan zoveel mogelijk boten je CV geven. Zorg er dus voor dat je genoeg uitgeprinte CV’s bij je hebt om uit te delen. Het liefst in een plastic mapje, dubbelzijdig geprint en eventueel met een visite kaartje erbij. Qua kleding kun je het beste dragen wat de crew op superjachten dragen. Als jongen betekent dat dockwalken in shorts en een polo. En als meisje een korte broek en een polo / strak t-shirt. Neem altijd extra kleding mee dat vies kan worden. Mocht de boot die dag een hand nodig hebben, dan kun je tenminste meteen aan de slag. Zorg er ook voor dat je er netjes en verzorgt uitziet. Dat betekend dat je haar in een staart is als meisje en dat je als jongen het liefste glad geschoren bent.

De beste tijd om te gaan dockwalken is ’s ochtends om ongeveer 8:00 of ’s middags rond een uur of 15:00 – 16:00. Ga zeker niet rond lunchtijd of als de crew niet aan het werk is.

Met het dockwalken ga je langs alle jachten en vraag je of ze een hand en dus crew nodig hebben. Wees beleefd en probeer zelfverzekerd, maar niet arrogant, over te komen. Vraag naar het hoofd van de afdeling waar jij graag zou willen werken. Als stewardess vraag je naar de chief stewardess en als deckhand naar de first mate. Grote kans dat ze geen tijd hebben om met jou te praten, maar het is altijd het proberen waard. Laat de crew waarmee je praat weten dat je op zoek bent naar een baan en geef ze jouw CV. Zorg ervoor dat je niet te lang blijft plakken, want ze zijn waarschijnlijk druk aan het werk. Bedank de persoon voor zijn tijd en loop verder naar de volgende jacht.

Tips voor succesvol dockwalken

• Als er geen crew inzicht is, stop je CV dan in het kleine brievenbusje die je bij veel superjachten vindt.
• Als je kussens en planten ziet op het dek dan betekent het over het algemeen dat er gasten op de boot zijn. Ga dan niet naar de jacht toe.
• Ook kun je letten op de kleding van de crew. Over het algemeen draagt de crew een polo en een short of een rok als er gasten op de boot zijn. Als er geen gasten op de boot zijn worden er in plaats van polo’s vaak t-shirts gedragen.
• In het weekend kun je ook prima dockwalken in het seizoen. Let er wel op dat de crew aan het werk is. Je wilt ze niet storen als ze een vrije dag hebben.
• Niet overal word je de dock opgelaten om te dockwalken. Probeer uit te zoeken waar het wel kan.
• Ga alleen met iemand anders dockwalken als je op zoek bent naar een andere positie. Een jacht heeft niet vaak twee stewardessen of twee deckhands nodig. Ook komt het zelfverzekerder over als je alleen op een jacht afstapt.

13. Netwerken voor je superjacht baan

Netwerken klikt misschien een beetje saai, maar dat is het zeker niet als je op zoek bent naar een baan op een superjacht! Het beste netwerken doe je namelijk in de bar. In elke plek waar er veel superjachten zijn, zul je bars vinden waar veel jachtcrew naartoe gaat. De ultieme plek om in gesprek te komen met mensen die al op jachten werken. Zorg er wel voor dat je niet te veel drinkt, want je wilt wel een goede indruk maken. Leuke bars om te bezoeken in de verschillende plaatsen zijn:

• Palma in Mallorca – de bekendste bar voor ‘yachties’ is de Corner Bar. Meer tips over wat te doen en te zien op Mallorca vind je hier.
• Antibes in Frankrijk – de bekendste bar voor yachties is de Blue Lady.
• Antigua in de Cariben – Skullduggery Bar, Cloggies (met Nederlandse klompen en oranje Wuppies aan de muur) en eigenlijk alle bars in English Harbour. Meer tips over wat te doen en te zien in Antigua vind je hier.

14. Geef niet op en hou vol!

Probeer te genieten als je op zoek gaat naar een baan op een superjacht. Neem je zoektocht serieus, maar ga ook eens een dagje op ontdekkingstocht in de plek waar je bent. Begin je niet meteen zorgen te maken als je niet binnen een paar weken een baan vindt. Wees niet gefrustreerd als je geen antwoord terug krijgt op mailtjes die je stuurt naar aanleiding van berichten op Facebook. Want helaas gebeurt dat heel vaak. Hou vol, probeer de bovenstaande stappen te volgen en als het dan echt niet lukt, dan heb je hopelijk wel een toffe ervaring om op terug te kijken!

Wat een ondernemende baan, en wat zal je veel meemaken. Erg leuk om te lezen hoe jij het ervaren hebt.

Nou daar komt aardig wat bij kijken. Interessant om zo een beeld te krijgen van een wereld waar ik helemaal niets van afweet.

Wauww. Ik heb hier echt bewondering voor. Dankjewel voor de unieke kans om eens een inkijk te krijgen in deze wereld. Niet stoppen met schrijven hoor. Ik lees graag meer en zo kan ik toch een beetje fantaseren over een onbereikbare wereld. 😁

Wat een leuk compliment! Dankjewel. Maar zoveel geld als de eigenaren van de superjachten hebben wil je zo ie zo niet hebben hoor. Ik heb wel gezien dat dat niet gelukkig maakt.

Leuk dat dit ooit eens op Sint Maarten is begonnen! Maar je bent wel heel veel weg van huis zo te zien.

Ik ben inderdaad maar weinig in Nederland. Maar ben er dan ook alweer zo’n 11 jaar geleden uit vertrokken.

dit lijk me echt een uitdaging en daarnaast een heel avontuurlijke baan!

OMG. Wat een bizarre manier van een baan vinden. Dockwalken. Als je jong bent, is dit miss wel een manier die moet lukken. Maar als je net als ik een hypotheek hebt, dan kun je niet voor een paar maanden op de gok naar het buitenland vertrekken. Bestaat er ook een manier om met meer zekerheid te vertrekken? Uiteraard thuis al voor de nodige cursussen zorgen. Super handig trouwens dat er in het Nederlands een hoop informatie te vinden is dankzij jou!!

Wat zou je graag op een jacht willen doen? En heb je al enige ervaring in dat gebied? Dat is wel belangrijk als je met wat meer zekerheid wilt vertrekken. Dockwalken is ook niet iets wat ik nou heel leuk vond… Wel iets om rekening mee te houden is, dat een baan op een jacht nooit echte zekerheid biedt. Je kunt helaas zo je baan verliezen.

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show 2012

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

Moscow Boat Show a Great Success

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

More than 400 yachts on display at the Show

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.
