Ship Model Gallery

Combining precision and craftsmanship in an exacting work of art, ship models evoke the fascination that we have for the sea and sea travel.

Few public figures have had more influence on modern political and social life than former British Prime Minister, Winston Spencer-Churchill. Fewer still had an ongoing relationship with the Queen Mary. To commemorate their affinity a new Churchill-themed exhibition has been brought to the Queen Mary.

Shipyard – LEGO® Ship Model

Measuring 26 feet, weighing over 600lbs. And made from 250,000 LEGO bricks, the LEGO Queen Mary brick model ship is a masterpiece to be seen. The model was designed by England’s certified LEGO Builder, Bright Bricks, Inc., to commemorate Britain’s most famous ocean liner.

The Cunard Story

The Cunard Story An exhibition on the Queen Mary, one of the most celebrated Cunard® ocean liners—explores the rich history of the extraordinary company that designed and built more than 150 ships over the past 175 years. Today, Cunard offers the most luxurious and unique cruise experiences available—adventures curated for travelers who savor the world.

Sun Deck/Bridge/Sports Deck

Sports Deck FWD | Daily 10am – 6pm

The nerve center for the entire ship. The BRIDGE includes the WHEELHOUSE, CHART ROOM, SIGNAL BRIDGE, and the DOCKING WINGS. The bridge is about 90 feet above the ship’s waterline.

Sports Deck | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Radio Room houses some of the original equipment used by the Queen Mary during her incredible career. The current radio room features an array of amateur radio equipment which has been used to broadcast communications around the world. Guests walking past the exhibit are likely to have a front-row seat of a real broadcast, as this space has been actively used since 1979.

Promenade Deck

Commodore’s office.

Promenade Deck Main Hall | Daily 2pm – 4pm

Formerly the Austin Reed of Regent Street clothing store (a famous, luxury brand clothier) the Commodore’s Office is now the day room of our ship’s Commodore, Everette Hoard. Much of this space is still very much original and intact. The Commodore’s Office features a number of the ship’s lavish furnishings; as well as some pieces from Commodore’s private collection. Guests are encouraged to stop in for a visit, or even just a photo with Commodore, our Staff Captain, or Chief Officer.

QM Heritage Room

Daily 10am – 6pm

See the ship through the eyes of those who served and sailed aboard her. The Queen Mary Heritage Room features video interviews of former crew members, war brides, and soldiers; all of whom share fond memories of this historic vessel. This rich history is the very foundation of the ship’s enduring legacy.

Promenade Deck Main Hall – Starboard Side  | Daily 10am – 6pm

This incredible exhibit features numerous models which showcase The Cunard® Line’s fleet; all the way from the historic  RMS Britannia  to ships from the current fleet, like the  Queen Elizabeth . Undoubtedly, the real showstoppers are the giant, cutaway models of:  RMS Lusitania ,  SS Normandie , and  RMS Titanic . These highly detailed, 1/48th models were all lovingly handmade by Father Roberto Pirrone, of Gardena, CA.

Features the World’s Largest LEGO ® Model of the Queen Mary. When you’re finished counting all 250,000 LEGO® blocks, see if you can spot the white, LEGO® cat.

Bow FWD  | Daily 10am – 6pm

During WWII the ship was outfitted with anti-aircraft weaponry to defend herself. This 40 mm gun is the same type of defensive weapon used onboard; to safely carry nearly a million troops throughout the war.

Promenade Deck Main Hall – Port Side  | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Music Room was a place where musicians, entertainers, lecturers, radio personalities and the like could rehearse. This upright piano is original to the ship, however, when the ship was in service a baby grand piano nearly filled this space.

Children’s Playroom

The original location of the Cabin or First Class Playroom. There were three playrooms available for the younger set on the Queen Mary. Each had a specific look, but all contained numerous toys that would appeal to both boys and girls. A Stewardess was assigned to oversee the youngsters. She would often gather the little ones and read to them. Play continued until the parents came to collect their children. The original artwork in this display came from the Tourist and Third Class Children’s Playrooms. The furniture is from all three classes.

Travel Bureau

This is the original Cabin or First-Class travel bureau as it was remodeled after WWII. The desks and chairs are those that were aboard when the ship sailed to Long Beach. Original desk top accessories and copies of brochures have been placed to show what would have been found when a passenger wished to make further travel arrangements. Here one could book another cruise on the Queen Mary or other liners and make train or plane reservations.

A-Deck FWD | Daily 10am – 6pm

The Cunard Story An exhibition on the Queen Mary, one of the most celebrated Cunard® ocean liners—explores the rich history of the extraordinary company that designed and built more than 150 ships over the past 175 years. Today, Cunard offers the most luxurious and unique cruise experiences available—adventures curated for travelers who savor the world.

Fire was a constant concern for “The Ship of Beautiful Woods.” The Fire Station was, not only, the first line of defense to protect the ship, it was also top-of-the-line technology that’s still impressive, even by modern day standards.

B-Deck FWD Portside | Daily 10am – 6pm

A mysteriously vague entry in the ship’s log, dated September 1949, states that a passenger was found dead in his cabin; which is now the hotel room referred to as B340. While no name was given, legends have claimed the victim as “Walter.” There is much lore surrounding Walter and the events that occurred in B340; and many believe that Walter is a vengeful spirit who loves to make his presence known. Reports of strange activity in B340 span from the ship’s days as an ocean liner, to the present day. Perhaps all of the activity is just Walter trying to get someone to listen to his side of the story. If you’re feeling brave enough, ask him yourself. He might just tell you.

First-Class Pool Viewing Area

Ask just about any paranormal investigator or medium about haunted locations aboard the Queen Mary , and you’ll probably hear many stories about the first-class pool. Why? Many believe this to be the most-haunted room aboard. Whether you hear about the ghost of a little girl named “Jackie” who loves to sing and play hide-and-seek with guests, or legends about this space becoming a “vortex” (whirlpool of energy) which allows spirits to pass between realms, seems like there’s one thing everyone can agree on: this famous Art Deco pool has become one of the most-visited locations on the entire ship.

Engine Room

Visitor’s Center D-Deck Stern | Daily 10am – 6pm

Venture down to the Engine Room and see the very heartbeat of this massive ship! Each of the 2 Engine Rooms contained 2 of the ship’s 4 powerful engines. These steam-powered turbine engines produced 40,000 horsepower a piece! When Queen Mary was speeding across the Atlantic at 28.5 knots, these engines would be turning the ship’s massive propellers 3 times every second! Fans of the paranormal will want to brave the Engine Room's lower level to check out the infamous watertight door 13, where guests often hear a wrench banging against the door.

Printing Press

Often described as a virtual floating city, the Queen Mary carried her own fully equipped print shop. Functioning under the direction of the ship’s purser, the print shop provided daily newspapers, programs of activities, and menus for the passengers.

Propellor Box

The Queen Mary had 4 massive propellers (or screws) to propel her through the waters at incredible speed. Each propeller was driven independently by its own turbine engine and was made of manganese bronze. The first set of propellers each measured 20 feet across and weighed 35 tons; however, these proved to produce too much vibration. The second set, and every set thereafter would consist of propellers that each measured 18.5 feet across, coming in at 32 tons each. The slightly smaller propellers proved much more effective to combat the vibration issue. In all, the Queen Mary would have 22 sets of propellers throughout her 31 years of sailing. Each time a new set would be installed, each of the propellers were so perfectly balanced that you could spin the massive propeller by hand! Visitors of the Propeller Box will be able to see the last remaining propeller on the ship.

Aft Steering

The Queen Mary had a number of backup systems to keep her functional. Aft Steering shows two redundant systems (one power steering system and one manual) by which the ship could still be steered, if her primary systems became inoperable. Additionally, visitors can also view the 3 massive electric generators, which powered the 2 hydraulic cylinders that pumped back and forth, turning the linkage which drove the rudder from side to side; thus, guiding the ship. The ship’s rudder was 3 stories tall and weighed 140 tons. At the time of its installation, this was the largest rudder ever installed on any ship!

Their Finest Hours: Winston Churchill and The Queen Mary

Learn about Winston Churchill’s relationship with the Queen which served as his sea borne war room during WWII. It is thought that Churchill traveled aboard the Queen Mary at least 10 times in both war and peace time. This exhibit includes original set pieces from the award-wining film, “Darkest Hours.” It is an in depth look into the person many consider to be the greatest statesman of the 20th century.

Sisters of the Sea

Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, created by a ship enthusiast Tom Varney over the past 20 years. These two 8-foot beauties are 3/32” + 1-foot representations of the original liners each made of balsa wood. Walk around these works of art and marvel at these two sisters of the sea.

PARTY BOAT SINCE 1927

The Mythical Meaning Behind “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner

by Glenn Rowley August 25, 2023, 3:25 pm

“Listen to the story now…” With those five words, Tina Turner invited listeners in 1971 to sit back, buckle up, and experience the rock and roll tale of “Proud Mary.”

Videos by American Songwriter

Left a good job in the city/ Workin’ for the man every night and day/ And I never lost one minute of sleepin’/ Worryin’ ‘bout the way that things might’ve been,” she sings over the teasing vamp of a guitar before launching into the song’s famous chorus of “Big wheel keep on turnin’/ Proud Mary keep on burnin’/ And we’re rollin’/ Rollin’ yeah/ Rollin’ on the river, complete with its signature, arm-waving choreography.

Creedence Clearwater Revival

Two years before Turner unveiled her indelible take on the “Proud Mary,” Creedence Clearwater Revival released the original 1969 version as the lead single off their sophomore album, Bayou Country . The song was something of a breakthrough hit for the quartet — though their earlier single “Suzie Q” had peaked just outside the top 10, “Proud Mary” became Creedence Clearwater Revival’s first of five eventual singles to land at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

CCR’s take on “Proud Mary” stuck to its rootsy origins as frontman John Fogerty spun the tale of hitching a ride on the riverboat queen. Turner, however, injected a propulsive dose of soul into the proceedings, pushing “Proud Mary” from “nice and easy” in the spoken word intro to a rough and wild finish — her powerful voice holding the horns, percussion, bass, guitar and more together as the song barrelled to its explosively joyful conclusion.

The song inevitably became as synonymous with Turner and her legacy as, say, “Nutbush City Limits,” “River Deep, Mountain High” and “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” And though dozens of big-voiced artists and reality TV hopefuls would attempt to cover “Proud Mary” in the intervening years, no one could ever hope to match the intensity, attitude, and pure magic of her interpretation.

The Meaning of the Lyrics

But what are the barn-storming lyrics to “Proud Mary” actually about? For that answer, we have to go back to Creedence Clearwater Revival and the song’s original author: John Fogerty.

Many fans may assume upon first or second listen to Turner’s famous recording that “Proud Mary” tells the story of a struggling, low-wage worker actually named Mary. Or, given CCR’s place within the counterculture movement of its time, that it’s a thinly veiled reference to marijuana. But only the former would be partly correct.

When constructing the song, Fogerty found inspiration in bits of different ditties he was already toying with in his notebook. In the liner notes of the 40th anniversary edition of Bayou Country , writer Joel Selvin explains that the singer-songwriter had , in fact, been working on an idea about a washerwoman named Mary in addition to multiple other songs.

“He began to link the songs he was writing to a mythical Deep South,” Selvin wrote, “a South this California kid had never seen, but could only imagine. It was a deceptively simple set of material. In addition to the three major pieces [in his notebook], Fogerty also had a couple of suitable blues and a concert rouser under his belt…and his ripping Little Richard impression was well-practiced.”

In a 2020 interview with American Songwriter , Fogerty proudly described writing “Proud Mary” as “that moment when songwriting truly started for me.” According to the rocker, the idea for the song’s title and first line came to him shortly after he’d been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army National Guard in the summer of 1968.

“I was overjoyed,” he said of receiving the official paperwork marking the end of his time in the Army, according to a transcript of a 1993 sit-down with Rolling Stone . “Holy hallelujah! I actually went out on the little apartment building lawn and did a couple of cartwheels…That’s where ‘Left a good job in the city’ comes from. I just felt real good.”

Amid the tumult of that pivotal year in American history, Fogerty set out to get serious about his craft. “What happened played out over a period of several months,” he continued. “I decided to get it together and be professional and get a little more organized. So, I went through that energy of going out and buying a little binder and putting paper in it, and bringing it home and saying, ‘ This is my songbook !’

“And my first entry into it was a title. ‘Proud Mary.’ I didn’t know what it was.”

Fogerty and his bandmates — rhythm guitarist Tim Fogerty (his elder brother), bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford — released their self-titled debut album that same July, and when it came time to work on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s follow-up, the frontman turned back to his notebook.

“Months and months later, being on the bridge of this thing coming out of me, I went back to my book, and looking at the first entry and then realizing, that’s it! It’s about a boat !” he said in 2020.

Though a real riverboat called the Proud Mary had yet to exist (one would eventually be built in 1981), Fogerty envisioned the titular “riverboat queen” making its trips up and down the giant waterway of what’s presumably the Mississippi River, all the while offering up a slice-of-life view at America’s heartland.

“Although I didn’t recall it at the time when I was doing ‘Rollin’ on the river,’ there is an old Will Rogers movie about these old paddle wheelers, and I believe at one point they actually sing, ‘Rolling on the river,’ he said. “I know that buried deep inside me are all these little bits and pieces of Americana. It’s deep in my heart, deep in my soul. As I learned in English 101, write about what you know about.”

It’s fair to say that the meaning behind “Proud Mary” could seem rather inscrutable at times based on how Fogerty cobbled the narrative throughline together from various sources. However, he distilled the song down to its essence just a few years ago in yet another sit-down with Rolling Stone .

“I wrote the song about a mythical riverboat, cruising on a mythical river, in a mythical time,” Fogerty concluded in 2018. “Perhaps the setting was ‘back in time’ on the Mississippi River. It was obviously a metaphor about leaving painful, stressful things behind for a more tranquil and meaningful life.”

About La Crosse Queen Cruises

Cruise back in time and explore the Upper Mississippi with us! The La Crosse Queen is a modern-day replica of the grand river boats that plied the Mississippi River in the early 1900s. Cruising out of La Crosse, Wisconsin, she is one of the few authentic Mississippi River paddlewheel river boats still in operation in the United States today. In keeping with early traditions, she was built with sternwheels that are her only means of propulsion.

The La Crosse Queen has a split sternwheel, and each half is run by a twin diesel engine that powers hydraulic motors, which turn the paddles. The split paddlewheel gives the Queen greater maneuverability and dependability. This is in contrast to most Mississippi River paddlewheelers in operation today that have a “free wheeling” paddlewheel at the stern of the boat for visual effect, but have traditional screw-type engines hidden for their real means of propulsion.

The La Crosse Queen is U.S. Coast Guard inspected for safety and is licensed to carry up to 149 passengers.

We took this boat cruise on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The boat was full, but there was plenty of room. Drinks are very reasonable and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. One big plus was the bathrooms were clean and spacious, something I didn't think I would find on a paddle boat! I would recommend the La Crosse Queen.

We took this cruise with a group and it was a lot of fun! We saw eagles, blue herons, foxes, osprey, along the banks of the Mississippi. We were able to go through the locks, which was lucky since if there is a barge in the area they do not allow this. We are talking about going again in the fall when the leaves are changing and birds are migrating.

We took the Friday night Pizza cruise and enjoyed fantastic views of the Mississippi River. Several people from our group had never been on a river cruise and were amazed. Free Pizza and beer along with cruise for $18.95 is hard to beat! Some questioned the cheap price, but soon found out it was good.

This was an excellent tour. The guide who did the narrative was friendly, fun and knowledgeable about the town and river. We saw bald eagles, a swing bridge, fancy homes, etc. We sat on the top deck which is covered and has open air sides so you get out of the sun and a nice breeze.

Always wanted to take a cruise on the Mississippi and we booked the early afternoon cruise on a weekday. Boarding went smoothly - they take your picture for sale later as a souvenir. Boat was clean and comfy and captain and staff friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They do have a snack bar and bathrooms on board. Relaxing and enjoyable!

We went on the La Crosse Queen on a beautiful day. Cruising on the river was so cool. The breeze, scenery was awesome. Best place to view everything is on the top deck. The crew were so polite and fun to talk with. If you have questions they answered them. Hats off to the La Crosse Queen.

Wonderful time on a 2-hour Sunday Brunch cruise. The buffet was small but the price was still good. Met wonderful folks inside and outside during the trip. Got to go through a Lock and Dam. The wait staff were very accommodating. Definitely worth every penny for this adventure.

We celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary on the La Crosse Queen. The dinner exceeded our expectations. The turkey and roast beef were both tender and moist. For being a buffet the food was delicious. The staff was attentive and live music was a surprise. We were fortunate to have wonderful weather and really enjoyed ourselves!

The MARY ELIZABETH was once referred to as the “Queen Mother of Memphis Towboats” for her service in the Memphis Harbor during the middle of the 20th century. Here’s how the story unfolds:

She was moved south in 1911, after being sold to the St. Tammany Steamship Company of Covington, Louisiana. The OSSINING spent the next four years being operated as a Ferry Boat over the 630 square mile Lake Ponchartrain.

Then in 1915 she was sold to Lyon Bros. of Greenville, Mississippi and used to run U.S. Mail from Greenville, upriver to Luna Landing, Arkansas. During this time, she was also converted from steam power to diesel power, which gave the OSSINING the distinction of being the first diesel power Ferry Boat on the Mississippi River.

After a dozen years, she was sold in 1928 to Warner & Tamble Inc . of Memphis, Tennessee. At this time she was refitted and remodeled into a Tow Boat, and rechristened to it's more familiar name, the MARY ELIZABETH, in honor of a family member of the new  Memphis owner.

In 1973, the MARY ELIZABETH was sold to Murphy Marine Service Inc. of Memphis. Murphy Marine ran her for a total of five years and then pulled her out of service.

Hope of resurrection came in 1986 when the MARY ELIZABETH was sold to Proud Mary Restoration Inc. The hope grew as the first signs of restoration were seen in January, 1987. However, it was not to be. In 1988, during the all-time low of the river gage in Memphis (-10.7 in the second week of July), the MARY ELIZABETH began breaking up on the bank of the river and was hauled away for scrap........ once and for all.

During the 1960s, at the height of the Rock ‘n’ Roll era in Memphis, a deck hand on the MARY ELIZABETH wrote and composed a song he entitled,  “Proud Mary”. The song describes his feelings and experiences, his life and times aboard his ship, the MARY ELIZABETH. The song was published and recorded by John Fogerty of Creedance Clearwater Revival, and was also performed by other artists such as George Jones and Johnny Paycheck, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen and pop diva, Tina Tuner. Tina Turner’s  upbeat rendition was more in the early 1980s style of music and entitled “Rollin’ On The River”. The tune has become one of the most popular and enduring songs of our age and has been placed #155 on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

In 1993 my old friend, the late Capt. Jake Meanley (1948-2000) told me that in the 1970s when he was piloting ships  for the MEMPHIS QUEEN LINE excursion company, he quite often used the MARY ELIZABETH through a lease agreement from Murphy Marine. She was used to push the MEMPHIS SHOWBOAT (barge) on countless moonlight river cruises. We can only guess at how many times that the bands were asked to play Proud Mary.

In the 1980s, while I was General Manager of Mud Island , a company by the name of Mid-South Concerts had a lease agreement to produce concerts in the 5,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre on the island each Summer. In August of  1986, John Fogerty decided to tour the country again. This time he performed as John Fogerty , a solo artist without the band members of Creedance Clearwater Revival. Previously, CCR and John had experienced a hard break-up with John even being sued and ordered to not sing the CCR songs, as he sounded too much like himself (!?). That was quite bitter for him and the impasse lasted quite a few years.

While visiting with John, he told me that “Proud Mary” indeed was one of his favorite songs, and one of the reasons why he was determined to return to concert tours again was that so many people told him that the tune was now more popularly known as the upbeat 1980s version of “Rollin’ On The River” by Tina Turner, rather than as raw, gutsy sound of “Proud Mary” by John Fogerty of the 1960s. Now, that was also some kind of motivation for John.

Today, the only remembrance of the PROUD MARY in Memphis is a beautiful color portrait in the main dining room of The Butcher Shop restaurant at 101 South Front Street in Downtown Memphis on Historic Cotton Row. The setting of the portrait is a calm day on the water of the Wolf River Harbor with the MARY ELIZABETH and the G.H. TAMBLE tied off side-to-side with a still reflection to the tow vessels in the water – an absolutely gorgeous painting. And probably 99.99% of the patrons who sit in this wonderful restaurant do not know the “rest of the story” of the history of those two junky looking harbor tow boats reflecting on that brown water with all those scrap trees and mud in the background!

“Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis . . .”

Remembering the Island Queen

The day pittsburgh stood still: september 9, 1947.

It was a such a simple repair. As Captain Charles Hall walked off the Cincinnati-based excursion steamer Island Queen, docked along the Monongahela wharf in Pittsburgh, he brushed against a loose stanchion.  He called to the chief engineer: couldn’t that be fixed?  The Island Queen faced a busy schedule. Arriving on September 6, she had already run trips on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Now, on her day off, the post could be secured before passengers began boarding again the following day.

Pittsburgh photographer Gene Rapp, Jr., created his own photo book featuring dramatic images of the disaster. | Heinz History Center

The chief engineer made a fateful decision. He opted to fix the post by welding it rather than using a rivet. As he made the repair, hot metal and an electrical arc from the welding torch burned through the boat’s deck and into a fuel tank below. The tank exploded, igniting a fire that engulfed the boat’s five decks in under ten minutes. Nineteen crew members died, unable to escape the inferno.

The blast, described like “an atomic bomb,” was heard miles beyond downtown Pittsburgh. Cars parked on the wharf were set ablaze and buildings were damaged by the explosion and flying debris. People rushed to the riverfront. So many crowded onto the Smithfield Street Bridge that officials feared a collapse. Spectators on Mount Washington lined Grandview Ave. Even schools such as Saint Mary of The Mount High School couldn’t fight the excitement: students and teachers rushed out of class to get a better view of the calamity below. (Full disclosure: my mother was one of those students. Her memories of the explosion remain vivid, even so many years later.)

The explosion of the Island Queen brought crowds of people to the Monongahela wharf, 1947. | Heinz History Center

The fiery end of the Island Queen became part of Pittsburgh lore, one of the most dramatic moments in the city’s history.  But lost in the pathos of that day was the Island Queen’s larger story, a history that linked the boat to the earliest days of western river steamboats and Pittsburgh’s own riverine heritage.

Advertisement from the Pittsburgh Press announcing the Island Queen’s first visit to Pittsburgh in 1931. From the Pittsburgh Press, Sept. 17, 1931.

The lost steamer Louisville

The Island Queen wasn’t supposed to be the Island Queen. The boat was commissioned in the early 1920s as one of a pair of deluxe river steamers operating out of Cincinnati, Ohio. The effort was funded in part by Pittsburgh Industrialist John W. Hubbard. Hubbard had interests in multiple river transport lines and was president of the venerable Cincinnati & Louisville Packet Line, a fleet of packet steamers dating back to 1819, at the dawn of western river steamboat travel.

The two new boats were to be named Cincinnati and Louisville. While they would look like traditional riverboats, their construction was rooted in the new century. They would be made of steel. The task of building their steel hulls went to the Midland Barge Company, an Ohio River firm in Midland, Pa., Beaver County. Midland Barge, a steel construction company, won the contract with an aggressive low bid, one that perhaps hinted at their inexperience with this kind of work. The twin sidewheelers were to be huge, each nearly 300 feet long. “Among the largest to be placed in commission” noted local newspapers.

The scale challenged Midland’s capacity. Author John White, a former Curator of Transportation at the Smithsonian who co-wrote the book “The Island Queen: Cincinnati’s Excursion Steamer” (1998), reports that the company may have turned to experts upriver at the American Bridge Company to troubleshoot solutions. At last, the Cincinnati’s hull was completed in July 1923 and sent downriver, where the rest of the boat would be finished. Work in Midland started on its twin.

As the project dragged on and expenses mounted, concern grew over the scheme’s viability and backers pulled out. The Louisville was never finished. Although Midland Barge reported that the boat’s steel hull was “about 80 per cent completed” by October 1923, the unfinished craft was left in limbo.

Investigators search through the collapsed steel remains of the Island Queen’s five decks, 1947. | Heinz History Center

The new Island Queen

Eventually another buyer stepped in. The former Louisville became an excursion steamer, ferrying passengers to Cincinnati’s Coney Island amusement park. With a new design by Pittsburgh marine architect Thomas Rees Tarn, the craft’s superstructure expanded into five decks. What she gained in space she lost in luxury – these decks were large, glass-enclosed open spaces designed to accommodate around 4,000 people. The boat also featured a two-story ballroom at nearly 250 feet long.

By 1925, the finished boat was christened the Island Queen. Technically, it was the second Island Queen. True to the precarious lives of river steamers, the first Island Queen, built in 1896, burned in a Cincinnati wharf fire in 1922. It was an omen of things to come.

The Island Queen was never a regular visitor to Pittsburgh. She spent her summers ferrying passengers to and from Coney Island, then after Labor Day headed out in search of off-season revenue. Usually, the boat churned south, where warmer weather offered greater prospects for business. Her first visit north was in 1931, when newspaper ads heralded “the largest steamer ever in Pittsburgh.”

In December, images of the boat’s “last ride” appeared in newspapers across the country. From the Des Moines Tribune (Iowa), Dec. 26, 1947.

A decade passed before the Steel City saw the Island Queen again. In 1941, the boat underwent repairs at Dravo’s marine yard on Neville Island twice. In January, the hull received a general inspection and repair. Then, in November, the Island Queen received a more extensive overhaul to widen and stabilize the hull. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette anticipated that the large steamer would “attract considerable attention.” This is probably true, although as the work stretched through December 1941 and into January 1942, no doubt attention turned away from the novelty of a large pleasure craft to the anticipation of the submarine chasers and LSTs that Dravo would start building to fight World War II.

It would soon be the end of an era. When the Island Queen next arrived on that fateful trip in 1947, she was supposed to offer public excursions through September 14 with one final private charter the following Monday. The boat never made that final booking.

When the Island Queen exploded, she prompted a final round of headlines in Pittsburgh. But more than that, she took a piece of Western Pennsylvania’s boat building heritage with her.

New rooms, tours, activities: Queen Mary is royal again, Long Beach says. But at a whopping cost

Amid cool weather, people fish from a kayaks with a view of the historic RMS Queen Mary ocean liner.

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Repairs for the Queen Mary have cost the city of Long Beach more than $45 million over the last eight years, according to city records obtained by The Times, a hefty bill as the city looks to keep the historic ship on a fledgling path toward profitability.

Repairs have included more than $3 million for rust and hull repairs, and $3.35 million for bulkhead repairs and removing lifeboats.

More repairs — both essential and costly — to keep the 90-year-old ship operational are still expected, but city officials are optimistic the financial headwinds the ship has battled are easing. Last year, the Queen Mary generated more than $12.6 million in revenue , including more than $3 million in profits between June and October.

LONG BEACH, CALIF. - SEPT. 25, 2019. Four years after a marine survey warned that the Queen Mary’s state of decay was “approaching the point of no return,” new inspection reports revealed some areas of the ship are still suffering from deterioration. In a June report, an inspector wrote that his findings caused him to have “significant doubt about the maintenance and safety upkeep of the property.” (Luis Sinco/Los Angeles Times)

Queen Mary, once a sinking white elephant, shows signs of remarkable revival

Years after running a deficit and being forced to shut down because of the COVID pandemic, the Queen Mary is now making a profit.

Jan. 4, 2024

For the end of fiscal year 2024 — the first year the ship has been fully operational since it was shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic — city officials expect the aging ocean liner to bring in a “modest profit” of $3.6 million.

“From an operating perspective, the Queen Mary can now support operating expenses with regular operating revenue,” city officials said in a statement. “All revenue generated is being invested directly back to the ship and vicinity.”

But the records from the city, first reported by the Long Beach Business Journal , have offered a glimpse into the significant costs that have come with the city’s effort to keep and preserve the iconic vessel.

At one time, the Queen Mary was dubbed the world’s fastest and most luxurious cruise ship . Among its celebrity and royal guests were the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Bob Hope and Elizabeth Taylor, who paid extra for her poodle. It also transported soldiers to the European front during World War II.

After Long Beach bought the Queen Mary from the Cunard Line shipping company in 1967, various firms were brought in to manage the vessel and develop adjacent property.

In 2021, the city took over the Queen Mary amid worries that it was not being maintained. City officials at the time were aware the ocean liner was in dire need of repairs.

One study in 2017 estimated it could need up to $289 million in repairs and renovations, and court documents showed about $23 million in repairs were needed to keep the once majestic ship from capsizing.

In addition to the needed repairs, city officials point out that between 2007 and 2019, before Long Beach took over, private operators had reported more than $31 million in losses.

Since 2021, city officials said they’d completed at least 25 major projects on the ship.

Most of the $45 million that has been spent on the ship, city officials said, has come from revenue from the Queen Mary or related subleases.

In 2017, about $23 million came from a Queen Mary reserve fund and bond issue from the Queen Mary’s Carnival sublease.

A $12-million agreement with the Port of Long Beach, which transferred control of about 14 acres of city property to the port to lease to third parties, and split revenue with the city, has also helped pay for some of the repairs.

Since the Queen Mary reported seeing a profit last year , city officials have touted the ship and what they say has been an economic success.

Since October, city officials say more than 118,000 people have visited the vessel, and the ship is once again becoming the center of the city’s plans.

“The Queen Mary is thriving once again,” Steve Caloca, general manager for the contracted operator, Evolution Hospitality, said in a statement. “From new Art Deco floors and staircases in the Main Hall, to the restored Observation Bar overlooking our beautiful city of Long Beach, there is so much to do when visiting the Queen.”

Hotel capacity on the ship has been expanded to 200 rooms, and onboard activities have expanded to 22 guest tours, exhibits and other activities.

This year, city officials said, hotel room renovations, elevator upgrades, repair of the ship’s third smokestack and an expansion of the Sun Deck, which is used for special events such as weddings, are planned.

The Queen Mary also is meant to play a crucial role in plans the city has for the nearby area.

Queen Mary to get $1 million more in repairs ahead of reopening in Long Beach

Millions of dollars have been poured into repairing the Queen Mary, which was closed due to the pandemic in 2020 and is expected to reopen this year.

Nov. 2, 2022

Officials are looking to develop 43 acres of space next to the ship into “a world-class entertainment and mixed-use development venue.”

“The return of live music, special events and music festivals at the Queen Mary and adjacent Harry Bridges Memorial Park has further highlighted the importance of live music and entertainment to the future success of the ship,” city officials said in a statement. “This waterfront space, with expansive views of the Long Beach shoreline and downtown, collectively represents one of the city’s most unique future development opportunities.”

And although the ship continues to need repairs, city officials said its condition might not be as dire as was once believed.

The study that estimated up to $289 million in needed repairs included $215 million to $261 million for hull repairs, city officials said in a statement. A more recent hull and tank study suggested the cost could be “considerably less.”

“We envision an even brighter future for the Queen Mary and adjacent land with plans for future development that will further elevate its status as a premier tourist destination,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement.

Putin taunts the West with 'first ever' visit to remote ice-covered 'frontier region' just 55 miles from the US - as Zelensky tries to drum up war support in Lithuania

  • Chukotka is Russia's easternmost region, sharing a maritime border with Alaska

President Vladimir Putin  has arrived for his first-ever presidential visit to Chukotka in Russia 's Far East - just 55 miles from the US state of Alaska .

Putin arrived in Anadyr, the local capital of the Chukotka region this morning after flying from Moscow some nine time zones away.

Chukotka is the easternmost region of Russia, with a maritime border on the Bering Strait with Alaska.

The Russian president was met in Anadyr by a motorcade and was whisked away in a limousine amid frigid temperatures of -28C.

It's the closest he has come to US soil since he met with President  Barack Obama in New York City in 2015.

Chukotka is so close to Alaska that Roman Abramovich - the ex-Chelsea FC owner - was reported to fly to Anchorage in Alaska for lunch when he was the governor of the region from 2001 - 2008.

Putin's visit comes at a time when US-Russian relations are at their lowest ebb in decades amid the war in Ukraine and a growing East-West divide.

The three Baltic states - all former Soviet republics which are now EU and NATO members - are among Ukraine's staunchest allies.

'Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,' Zelensky said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

'Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,' he said.

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky's first official trip abroad this year.

In Lithuania, a key donor to Ukraine, Zelensky said he will hold talks with the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, and meet with the Ukrainian community.

The visit comes as other Kyiv allies waver on fresh aid, nearly two years into Russia's invasion.

Ukraine has come under intense Russian shelling in recent weeks, retaliating with strikes on Russia's border city of Belgorod.

Zelensky has urged allies to keep military support flowing and held in-person talks with officials from the United States, Germany and Norway last month.

But an EU aid package worth 50 billion euros ($55 billion) has been stuck in Brussels following a veto by Hungary, while the US Congress remains divided on sending additional aid to Ukraine.

Following his trip to Chukotka, Putin is expected to visit several regions in the Russian Far East to boost his re-election campaign amid the war with Ukraine, which has seen more than 300,000 Russians killed or maimed.

He is due to stand in March, seeking another six years in the Kremlin.

The only Kremlin leader ever to travel to Chukotka previously was Dmitry Medvedev in 2008.

Putin's trip sees him escape a wave of ugly protests in western Russia over hundreds of thousands of people scraping by in freezing conditions due to breakdowns in communal heating supplies.

In Elektrostal, Moscow region, desperate residents say they have had no communal heating - which Russians routinely expect the state to supply usually through piped hot water - for the entire winter so far.

'We have been without heating since [9 October],' one resident said in a video circulating on Telegram.

'It is impossible to be in our homes… We are freezing! We are freezing! We are freezing!' they said.
