Up Close With the Madame Gu

In late October, I flew to Dubai to report on the Madame Gu , a 324-foot superyacht that maritime records suggested had been moored there for months, despite having turned off its radio signal in March. There was good reason to place it under the radar: It was linked to a sanctioned Russian oligarch, Andrei Skoch.

Here’s what I saw →

During the trip, I stayed on the Queen Elizabeth 2 , the famous trans-Atlantic cruise ship that is now a floating hotel. In addition to its historical curiosities, the ship had the benefit of being anchored right near the Madame Gu at the Mina Rashid Marina, a bustling commercial port in Dubai.

Any evidence that the Madame Gu’s maintenance is being paid for in U.S. dollars could help the United States make a legal case to seize the ship. One international service provider — the British company Aggreko, whose generator set was powering the ship at the time — made me curious.

One morning I spent an hour observing the vessel. Stationed next to other superyachts — two of which are also linked to prominent Russians — the Madame Gu shone in the sun. Scaffolding affixed to its port side and two figures I spotted walking the deck suggested it was being well maintained.

Some services, including security, were being handled by P&O Marinas , a division of the DP World, which is owned by Dubai’s royal family. (DP World later told us they comply with local and national laws in the U.A.E. Aggreko’s generator set was removed after The Times reached out to the company.)

There was one salient absence from the Madame Gu: a country flag. Unlike the superyachts around it, the shiny blue ship had no flag flying from its stern, suggesting something we later confirmed: that the ship is currently stateless, meaning its movements are extremely limited.

Motor Yacht

Madame Gu was the largest superyacht to emerge from the Netherlands at the time of her delivery. Having since been overtaken, this 99 metre superyacht nonetheless remains one of the most distinctive vessels on the water thanks to world class styling by De Voogt Naval Architects and Winch Design alongside expert construction by Feadship.

Sleek, powerful and extremely detailed, this 2013 launch has since travelled the oceans and made her mark on the world’s marinas. Her interior was also styled by Winch Design, running through the vast open spaces on board provided by the 14.85m (48’9”) beam. 

Madame Gu is able to accommodate 12 guests in 6 cabins, and features an innovative automated hidden helicopter hangar on the bow. Feadship CEO Dick van Lent told Superyachts.com about tackling a worthy challenge. 

"Like with most of our boats, every project brings challenges. Certainly with [Madame Gu] we had a couple of challenges," noted the CEO at the 2014 Top 100. "It was spectacular in design so there were lots of design features to work out [...] that’s why people come to us. We like challenges, we like to do innovation and bring your product forward and try to stay ahead of everybody else."

Luxury yacht builder feadship of custom motor yachts, has launched the largest feadship to date: "madame gu"..

The 99-metre masterpiece was created by the Feadship yard in Makkum and is also the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands. Sleek and quick, and with exquisite exterior detailing, she is a well-honed masterpiece bound to turn heads in the marinas of the world.

More than four years in the making, Madame GU left the building hall today. She is an elegant and striking tribute to her visionary owner, the talented design team of Andrew Winch and the hundreds of Feadship staff who built her.

As is usually the case with Feadship , confidentiality is a given but is no secret that Feadship ’s advanced hull construction system, fine-tuned over many decades, has enabled its craftsmen to construct a slender lightweight vessel that, despite her 99-metre length, can attain a speed well over 24 knots. Capitalizing on Feadship’s engineering experience on motor yachts Predator and Tango, she is capable of such speeds thanks to her highly efficient hull form and quadruple engines driving controllable pitch propellers swift and efficiently.

The experience of a different kind underpinned some of the other special requests for this latest member of the Feadship fleet. Leveraging on the expertise accrued on 81-metre Air, launched in 2011, and the fully enclosed helicopter hangar which was developed for 86-metre Ecstasea from 2004, Madame GU  is the second Feadship to feature such a certified helicopter storage system.
