Set sail with safety bay yacht club.

If you’re looking to make 2023 a brilliant year and would like to be part of an exciting and welcoming community, then joining the Safety Bay Yacht Club should be top of the list, especially if you’re into or would like to learn a water sport such as sailing, wind surfing, kiteboarding or foiling. SBYC provides endless opportunities to get out on the water, improve skills, meet new people and of course, enjoy spectacular views from the club house located on Safety Bay Foreshore. Celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, SBYC is one of the longest standing clubs in Rockingham. The club volunteers have worked super hard to make SBYC epic and have planned many exciting events through the season, which typically runs from November to March.

There’s something for everyone with membership benefits including access to club house facilities, discounted event entry prices, access to club dinghies, Friday evening social events, school holiday activities and skipper’s ticket, and marine radio courses through ‘Go Sailing’. SBYC runs three kids sailing course (for different ages), where kids will learn the fundamentals of sailing including parts of the boat, steering and wind reading. The most recent course included a fun treasure hunt around the pond.

safety bay yacht club photos

One of the highlight events is the upcoming ‘Boss of the Bay’, happening on 28 January 2023 (wind dependant). In this race, participants will sail, kite, windsurf, or foil their way through the course from Port Kennedy to Penguin Island, finishing in Safety Bay; the fastest rider takes the prize. Boss of the Bay makes up one of three major events in the WA kite down winder series, and count towards the sought after ‘Best in the West’ title. The Boss of the Bay event conveniently coincides with the SBYC 75 th Anniversary. After the race many celebrations will take place as we look back at events over the last 75 years and get excited for what’s still to come!

safety bay yacht club photos

Other exciting events include the Twin Tip and windsurf slalom series consisting of seven rounds. Sign up on the day to join in the action. Next race kicks off Sunday 12 th February 2023. Keep an eye out for other spontaneous fun filled events that pop up throughout the season.

safety bay yacht club photos

If water sports aren’t your thing or you prefer a more casual membership, consider joining as a social member to enjoy the ocean front dwelling to relax, have a drink and meet new people. Laura, the SBYC Commodore describes the club as open, friendly, and laid back – that’s exactly what you will feel when you walk in. Laura would love nothing more than for the Rockingham community to be part of the SBYC community. Nothing beats a day on the water with friends and having a place to go to share the stoke and the stories, making those days even better!

A special shout out goes to Andy and Ali Byne, these amazing SBYC volunteers recently won the ‘Australian Sailing Volunteer of the Year WA’ award and were in the final three to receive the national award.

Why not check out WA surf shop located underneath SBYC for all your water sport’s needs. The friendly staff will help you chose the most suitable gear for your chosen sport. Lesson packages available.

If you’re in the area and feeling peckish, pop into one of the following local café/restaurants;

  • Azacca Kitchen – Enjoy a craft beer and some tasty share snacks in the beer garden.
  • Bayside Barista – 100% gluten free café, you have to try the pancake stack! Dogs welcome outside.
  • Café Barco – Sit back and watch the action in the pond while enjoyinga delicious breakfast or lunch. Dogs allowed in the outdoor area.
  • Pengo’s Café – Grab coffee and a burger while taking in the views of Shoalwater Island Marine Park. Pengo’s is also dog friendly.

Case closed after St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire

A Division of Investigative and Forensic Services report stated the fire’s cause was...

ST. ANDREWS, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The fire that destroyed the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club is now reported as accidental and the case was closed.

A Division of Investigative and Forensic Services report stated the fire’s cause was undetermined.

As to where the fire started, the report lists it likely started at or on the floor of the second-floor ballroom area, or the high ceiling level of the first floor, directly below the ballroom.

However, due to extreme safety concerns, they could not reach the area because the floor was burned away, and could not determine the cause.

After speaking with neighbors and checking out nearby cameras, detectives did not find suspicious activity.

The case was closed due to insufficient evidence and there are no further leads.

  • OCEAN RACERS SET COURSE FOR DESTINATION KING ISLAND  On the 9 th  March 2024, the 114 nautical mile race across Bass Strait, organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria and supported by the King Island Boat Club, starts. The fleet will set off from Queenscliff bound for Grassy Harbour, and this year's 53rd ORCV Melbourne to King Island Race promises thrilling battles throughout the feet. Racing under AMS, ORC, multihull, double-handed, and PHS, boats compete for the King Island Trophy awarded to the overall winner on AMS.   Sailors don’t race in this event just for the sailing. One mention of crayfish, the infamous rib eye fillet steak sandwiches and local cheeses has the fleet of close to 200 sailors onboard salivating, ready to knock down the door to the wonderful hospitality of the King Island Boat Club, which uses the event as its major annual fundraiser.  We would like to wish our local boats, Shimmer, Summer’s Lease, Ginan and JokerX2,  a safe and speedy passage to Grassy Harbour (seen below).

Mount Martha Challenge

This Sunday 3rd of March is our turn to host Mt Martha in our annual Round the Hill Challenge. We used to win this unopposed but the last few years they have cleaned us up big time! This is mainly due to them having more boats on the water. We out sail them in most divisions but come up short on numbers. So this year I’d like every able bodied sailor to not only sail themselves but also bring your friends, bring your enemies, I don't care as long as they sail for us and not MMSC! Remember that racing starts at 1.00 not 2.00 and ramming is allowed ( as long as nobody sees you ). Jokes aside, this is a really fun event and the Mt Marthans are a great crowd who enjoy coming around to SBSC as much as we enjoy going to them. It would just be nice to grab that trophy back again ! Cheers, Pete Chippy

John dryden (aus 352 louie, nee green eggs 1), friday pursuit race / mustang sally trophy.

Great to see 17 boats out for the Mustang Sally Trophy despite the brisk conditions, including new members Warrick Pearson and family on LeTardis.  Course 2 was selected and a very BIG thank you to Greg and Fiona Lowe who battled their way out to 25 in some pretty unpleasant conditions to drop an inflatable mark to replace the virtual mark, and our Club Captain John Wemyss and Jamie Ferguson for picking it up at the end of the race.

Thank you to the tower team of Di Jackson, Lynlee & Greg Coutts and Glenys Hitchens.  And Sunday’s team of Judy Champion and Duty Boat ‘Summer Breeze’.  Great job and without our volunteers we don't get to enjoy a sail on a Friday night!

Sunday Club Championship

Congratulations to Pauline Cleaver and crew on Mr. Bojangles who took out a clean sweep on PHS, AMS and ORCc.  Click HERE for full results.

Friday 9th February - Twilight Pursuit Series #2 Race 4

This Friday Twilight you will see our new BotMark in use, a first for the Club, and a first in Victoria.

This is part of a drive to reduce reliance on problematic Virtual Marks and give us more course options, ones that better suit differing wind directions.  In parallel, we have started the process of seeking VicPorts permission for a permanent laid buoy near 25, but it remains to be seen whether we will be successful.

This Special Course ( link here ) is for tomorrow’s predicted SSW direction.  The nominated lat/long is indicative, the RO needs to retain options to slightly adjust on the day. If for some reason we have last-minute problems with the BotMark, then it will be replaced by a normal SBSC Laid Mark.

Enjoy the racing.  Any feedback is very welcome.
