  • Trip56853946974 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing start, disappointing ending - Our trip ended one hour earlier, we came back onshore at pointes des regates at 14.28, an hour prior to our expected arrival - as soon as we arrived at the destination, we felt the staff wanted us off the boat ASAP - we were not offered coffee and tea when requested - we asked the staff if we could hang out on the boat since the weather was clear at that time in Mahebourg. The staff, Nadia, Lorenzo, Cedric etc were very friendly. . We understand the weather conditions are unpredictable however the ending of the trip was a extremely disappointing. There was no offer of reparations of the trip getting cut short by 1h, nor alternate options proposed by the staff to make up for the lost hour : partial refund, staying on the boat in the sunny lagoon back in Mahebourg or other options that the staff could have proposed. The weather was amazing and clear, quiet back at the docking point. What was an amazing start of the trip, we ended being let down at the end. This was not our first catamaran trip, and we chose your company despite the higher price point as we heard some great reviews. Read more Written 8 January 2024

Our hotel Veranda Paul et Virginie had told us the Catamaran would take us to the three northern isles. This was totally false. They take you to snorkel (which our hotel offered for free anyway), then to swim in a mangrove, then take you to an island that they leave you on for 1.5hrs+ (no facilities) that is completely full of rubbish. Most boring day of the entire holiday, sadly not for me and I would not recommend this trip. Read more Written 16 November 2023

Croisières Australes – Encounter with dolphins on the legendary Harris Wilson

harris wilson catamaran mauritius

Specialising in catamaran excursions in Mauritius since 1992, Croisières Australes, a subsidiary of Rogers Aviation, offers fascinating dolphin-viewing trips off the western coast of Mauritius on board the Harris Wilson 1.

Photos : croisières australes image bank.

It’s early morning and the sprightly Harris Wilson I gently sets out from the Morne Anglers Club jetty, its bow cleaving through the clear, warm waters of the lagoon. The famous 60-foot-long catamaran was originally built to take part in the Route du Rhum solo regatta across the Atlantic with famous sailors such as Florence Arthaud and Jean Maurel at the helm. With the imposing Morne Brabant Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as the backdrop, the boat heads slowly towards Tamarin Bay. On one side, the ocean stretches all the way to the distant horizon and on the other, a picturesque coastline comes into view with small fishing villages nestling in the midst of diverse tropical landscapes. When the conditions are right, the bay offers one of the greatest experience ever, an encounter with a small school of dolphins whose playground it is. They are mainly spinner dolphins (Stenalla longirostris) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). If one is lucky and players are in the mood, they’ll display themselves in their full glory – to everyone’s delight, however young or old they are. These sea mammals love playing around and have always fascinated people, sometimes too much. They are very vulnerable creatures, which is why the Tourism ministry brought in a code of conduct in 2006 setting out rules for the observation of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. It is a code that Croisieres Australes’ catamarans follow to the letter in order to show proper respect to the dolphins. Based on International Whaling Commission rules, the code bans sudden changes in speed, sailing right up to the dolphins and making a racket to attract them. Boats should not cut them off in their tracks nor get any closer than 50 metres, and engines have to be at a standstill during observation periods. Feeding them is also forbidden as is throwing anything at them. After this marvellous show, the Harris Wilson 1 eventually sets off in a south-westerly direction and anchors by the beach at La Preneuse, where ancient cannons stand on the beach, with the Martello Tower Museum just behind. The brief halt provides an opportunity to admire the rich marine life around the coral reef. The next stage is the lagoon around Ile aux Benitiers, a coral sand islet just off the coast, popular with day trippers. It’s a great spot for swimming and the temptation to put on snorkel and flippers is almost overwhelming. Lunch is then served on board. By mid-afternoon it’s time to set sail again to return to the jetty in Black River. It’s always a pity that such trips have to end but there are plenty of happy memoires that will linger on for many a day.

Catamaran Cruise to Gabriel Island

As part of the cruise you will pass by an amazing lagoon, where swimming and snorkeling are a must. Sometimes during this excursion you will be able to see whales as well as dolphins. If this happens, the crew will stop the boat, in order for you to observe these great animals from close in their natural environment. Flat Island houses one of the two working lighthouses in Mauritius. Flat Island, 253 hectares in size, is the largest of the northern islet and is mostly flat, except its single hill topped by a lighthouse.

North of Flat Island is Pigeon Rock, a spectacular bare rock stack, where many seabirds come for nesting. Flat Island is a very popular venue for snorkelers, and also offers great dive sites. The island offers beautiful beaches with crystal clear turquoise water

About Catamarans and Catamaran Vessels

What is a catamaran.

Catamaran is a type of boat (or occasionally ship) consisting of two hulls joined by a frame. Catamarans can be sail or motor-powered. The word catamaran comes from the Tamil language, in which the word kattumaram means "logs bound together".

About Catamarans and Catamarans Vessels

The catamaran was the invention of the paravas, a fishing community in the southern coast of Tamilnadu, India.

In later times, catamarans (also known as cat boats) have been used for fishing and transport in the coastal waters of New England and New York. Around the turn of the 19th century they were adapted for racing. Today the main use of the catamaran is for day sailing and leisure cruises.

Catamarans types

Catamarans in Mauritius exist in many designs, and sizes. Today it is possible to find catamarans in range of sizes, from 14 feet (4.5m) basic catamaran to 100 feet (30.5m) racing / luxury catamaran yacht.

The catamarans types include beach catamarans, open deck cruising catamarans, bridgedeck cabin cruisers, racing catamarans, Trimaran and many more. A catamaran is distinguished from other boat types by its two hulls. A catamaran has one mast, and one or two sails, depending on its size. Therefore, catamaran is not really a "rig" type, but rather a boat type.

About Catamarans and Catamarans Vessels

Why choose a catamaran cruise?

Catamarans are the ideal vessels for those searching for a real leisure cruise and also for those looking for fast sailing.

Some of the modern designed catamarans are speedy sailboats which are ideal for open areas where maximum sailing speed is desired. Catamarans also offer the virtues of roominess, stability and simple handling.

Catamarans can fly deftly across the water lifted and propelled by air packed into the sails. The modern catamarans offer all the facilities of yachts, including spacious cabins, showers, toilets, and are equipped with all the modern facilities and utilities.

Catamaran Sailing Vessels in Mauritius

Catamarans in mauritius.

In Mauritius you can find catamarans in different sizes, designs and styles - from a 30 ft (9m) more basic catamarans to very luxurious 60 ft (19m) catamarans. The typical day-charter catamarans are usually at around 40 ft (13m) in size, and take between 20 - 40 persons aboard, depending on the size and its internal layout.

The majority of catamarans in Mauritius offer a shaded cockpit area, with seating for each passenger and large comfortable trampolines for sunbathing and relaxing. For the convenience of passengers, in addition to toilets and onboard showers, you can enjoy the comfort of fully equipped onboard cabins during longer sailing cruises. Sailing in a catamaran means sailing in real comfort while enjoying a very relaxed sailing experience.
