A Sailor’s Search for the 10-Meter Yacht ‘Sirius’

Sausalito sailor Fred Huffman of the the Contessa 35 La Diana has been reminiscing about a certain sailboat, a 10-Meter racer named Sirius . Fred is hoping someone among our readers may also remember the boat and have some idea of what has become of her .

Since my birth in 1938, I was raised sailing; however I didn’t begin ocean racing until 1956. That year I crewed aboard the 66-ft ketch Nam Sang — a true yacht — in the San Diego to Acapulco Race. That did it: I became totally engrossed in yacht racing. Soon, I was a crewmember aboard the 46-ft  Kettenburg-built PCC Squall (PCC hull #1) in “class” races, and I especially loved the ocean-race courses around the various Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. Los Angeles Yacht Club’s annual Whitney Series of seven ocean races was hugely popular at the time. The 1957 Transpac Race aboard Squall was the first of my 10 TP races.

As I recall, during those years there were around five 10-Meter racing yachts actively racing in our area. The 10-Meter Sirius was the best of them; she was quite unbeatable in the few class races that occurred, and she often raced in the Whitney Series races. We crews of other race boats only saw her before the starts because she quickly sailed away from the fleet, usually finishing first, and often winning the races on corrected time.

Some years later, I reconnected with Sirius (then with a new owner) and had the thrill of racing aboard her in some 10-Meter regattas and in the 1966 Big Boat Series in the Bay. We had daily boat-for-boat-races with Baruna , the beautiful 72-ft yawl that was called “The Belle of the Bay.” We ended up beating Baruna in that regatta.

In those years I was painting and varnishing yachts for a living, and I acquired the job of refinishing all the brightwork on Sirius , including her varnished spruce mast, and repainting her light-gray topsides.

I haven’t seen Sirius for at least 30 years, and I wonder if any reader of your fine rag might have some current news about the beautiful Sirius .

The 10-Meter Sirius was, of course, wooden. She was — hopefully, still is — a low, sleek beauty, around 55- or 60-ft long, I think. I wish I had an actual photo of her.

If anyone has any knowledge of the Sirius in question, please let us know in the comment below, or by email at [email protected] .

The 10-Meter Sally will be celebrating it’s 100th birthday in 2027 and currently resides at the San Diego Yacht Club near her sistership the 10-Meter Branta.

I had the pleasure of sailing on Sirius in the 1960’s out of South Shore Sailing Club (now South Shore YC) in Newport Beach. I don’t know what became of her. This article brought back memories of my youth. We once did a cruise to Catalina for the weekend for the Junior Sailing program on Sirius. Thanks for the memories.

John You and I sailed the mid winters in long beach on your Intl 14. Seems to me we went over. I’ve sailed all over up until a couple years ago.

I well remember SIRIUS, the beautiful and fast, light grey, 58′, 10 meter #15 designed and built by Johan Anker in 1933. Tommy Webster was her sailing master, and Bill Ficker was guest driver during 1954-1961 when Howard Ahmanson owned her and kept her in front of his home on Harbor Island in Newport Beach. The other 10’s in the S.Cal area were HILARIA, BRANTA, SALLY, and COQUILLE. SIRIUS won at least once every ocean race available to her. I well remember skippering her in the 1966 BBS and steering a 10 meter on SF Bay with a tiller. After that SIRIUS fell on hard times, and I do not know what ever became of her. Best, ~skip allan

I sailed on Sirius in the 1965 La Paz race. The skipper for that race was Lanny Coon from the Newport Beach area. He was a former Snipe Champion and all around good sailor. I saw the boat in Ventura, CA in the late seventies or early eighties. There was a failed attempt to save her and a disagreement between partners and I heard the boat had been cut up and removed for non payment at the yard- – so sad.

I remember Sirius I being chained up at Lido Shipyard (early 70’s) for non-payment. Memories of the 10 Metre’s in Newport. Sally, with her beautiful Green and Sirius I with that wonderful gray.

My Grandfather Wesley D. Smith owned the Sally for many years. He was friends with Andrew Brown (Z-Spar Paints) that made the special Sally Green topside paint . That color remainded on the Z-Spar color chart and until the 1970s. After that, Catalina Island continued to use Sally Green for many years on the pier handrails.

After racing to Ensenada on another boat, I got to sail back to San Diego on SALLY in 1964, I was 18 then. She was Sally green then and run by her pro skipper Jim Newkirk, from Newport Harbor. It was unforgettable moment in my long sailing career as I was at helm coming to SD past Pt Loma with rail down on Sally. She went on to win the NHYC boat show that same month. Jim Newkirk went on to run the big M boat Sirius after Sally was sold as I remember. I still stop to look at her when I visit SDYC.

I was on Baruna in ’66 – back whan BBS was chock full of Big Boats. Great times. Turns out I jumped on Sirius for the delivery back from S.F. to Marina del Rey. Quite a trip. Left early in typical Gate fog then eased left and began heading downcoast. Stopped in Morro Bay and picked up a few more crew – skip felt we needed them but we were already comprised of skip (non-racer), a couple of Sirius’ crew, an Aussie off Stormvogel and myself. Soon found out his motives had something to do with wanting to add some estrogen and marijuana to our adventure. Continued on and as we cleared San Luis Bay / Avila the wind started to build such that as we closed on Conception it was likely pushing 30 – 35 kts. with sizable seas. All was good until the time came to jibe over to port. Wisely laid out a plan for a chicken jibe with engine on. All roles talked out and procedures planned. Things were fine until we went through the eye of the wind and began dropping onto our port tack course. The person in charge of the runners forgot to, or somehow couldn’t, release the starboard runner and the boom slammed into it putting us nearly instantly hard on the wind on port tack. As can be imagined some chaos and a bit of yelling ensued. My spot was on the bow and I can still clearly recall being on my knees trying to strangle the life out of the bow cleats as the bow paused slightly (one of those time slowing moments when seconds seem like hours) at the top of a wave then plunged like mad bull into the trough beyond. Spreaders in the water, people flying about in the cockpit, green water all over the bow and leeward deck nearly to the hatch, etc. Fortunately, someone, somehow managed to clear the winch, blow the runner and allow Sirius to get back on her feet. Once we cleaned up and bailed out the boat all was good – steady breeze in the ~20s for most of the afternoon and as the sun was going down, the wind dropped off and the decision was made to spend the night in Avalon and head to del Rey the next day. Great decision. As we set up to depart in the morning a couple of guys in a Whaler came by and one grabbed his guitar and sang us a couple of Mexican ballads as we downed our oatmeal. As they moved on to serenade other boats we pulled anchor and tied up in del Rey a few hours later. Great experience.

I got to letter her in 1972 or 3, down in Newport Beach

10 meter yacht

I am Brian Wald. It was my father, Arthur Wald, who owned the boat during the 70’s. We – my father, brother Craig, and I – sailed for 10 years all over the West Coast and into Mexico. We raced Ensenadas, Mid-Winters, Del Rey Cup, the first Puerto Vallarta, Around Catalina overnight where we beat Bill Ficker sailing Pat Dougan’s Columbia….etc. etc. One year we raced 55 times – 52 – firsts, 1 second, and 2 thirds.

Arthur was a good sailor but not as expert as others. He was personally challenged to directly sail Sirius, by our good friend Bob Lynch of Sally, in the Del Rey Cup, where he won handily. However, we were very fortunate to sail with the likes of Burke Sawyer, Lanny Coon, Tom Blackaller, Roy Bream, Fred Huffman, and so many more wonderful sailors. I do remember several of you who have commented herein and delighted to know you’re all well.

I was in college when we first got the boat and had it through my graduate school time. She was maintained like a Bristol classic car and no new invention or sail type wasn’t tried to ensure her racing success. Arthur, when finished with the boat, donated her to the Boys Scouts of America, who in exchange offered him use of their recent donation – James Arness’s custom built 58′ catamaran Sea Smoke. Once you’ve gone fast it’s hard to go anything but faster. For two years we raced her on the West Coast – sometimes hitting 35mph in the right weather.

I can say that once you’ve had a boat of that caliber of performance and crew, you understand what the best is all about. Great boat design, great sail design, great equipment, and a great crew all working in sync like a fine Swiss watch….. what fun! I wish I could do it all over again.

And Fred, I do remember you. I very much appreciate your interest.

The International 10-Metre Class is a construction class, meaning that the boats are not identical but are all designed to meet specific measurement formula, in this case the International Rule. At their heyday, Metre Classes were the most important group of international yacht racing classes, and they are still actively raced around the world. “10” is a product of the formula; 10mR boats are, on average, 16.5 meters long.

10_Metre_Traditional

The 10mR was used as an Olympic Class during the 1912 and 1920 Olympics. The International Rule was set up in 1907 to replace earlier, simpler handicap system which were often local or at best, national, and often also fairly simple, producing extreme boats which were fast but lightly constructed and impractical.

YACHT RACING IN THE EARLY 1900s

duesenberg-model-j-tourster.2000x1333.Jan-05-2012_19.29.29.193849_02

Cannot resist a Duesenberg

Sailors are not only rational people but have sentiments, too, and while many are drawn to ultra-light racers on foils, others wouldn’t go to sea in anything less than a heavy pilot cutter. But some sailors feel that the most attractive yachts were built between the wars when the perfect cruiser was at the same time a flush-decked racing yacht. This was in the days when even cars and motor yachts had style and the owner of a major racing yacht in Long Island Sound would go to his office downtown in a Duesenberg or, in summer, in his fast commuter.

In those days, around-the-buoys racing usually took place in those slender, white, gleaming one-off, flush-decked yachts with their billowing cotton sails. The Gold Cup was one of the desired trophies, the racing grounds changing between Hankö, Cowes, Genua and Sandhamn; while the America’s Cup was raced off Newport, Sir Thomas Lipton challenging Mr Vanderbilt.

10 meter yacht

Shamrock racing against Reliance in 1903 under a previous rule, the Seawanhaka rule

These one-off yachts obviously didn’t just come in any size or shape but were designed to a measurement rule, the idea being to assure that the speed of the yachts would be more or less the same, in spite of different length, sail area, displacement or other characteristics.

In international racing, two rules became dominant in the beginning of 1900:

The  Universal Rule , devised by the great Nathanael Greene Herreshoff of Bristol, Rhode Island in 1905, was used for the the huge America’s Cup contenders, including the J-boats raced in America’s Cup until 1937.

The International Rule was first laid down in 1907 by British and Scandinavian naval architects in collaboration with German and French and produced a number of “Metre” class yachts – the 6-metres, 8-metres, 10-metres and 12-metres were some of the most prominent classes. These yachts were raced in the Olympics and, when the America’s Cup was resumed again after the war, 12-metres replaced J-boats in the 1958 Cup.

Sans Atout, 1912

I don’t have much of a personal bond with Metre Yachts even though it seems to run in the family. In the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Bengt Heyman won a silver medal in his 8-metre ‘ Sans Atout ‘, designed by Norwegian Johan Anker.

Another and very close relative, my grandfather Hugo Heyman, bought the 6-metre ‘ Borgila ‘ in 1925. Borgila was designed by Charles Nicholson and built in 1924 at Ängholmens Varv for a consortium at the Royal Yachting Club in Gothenburg, GKSS.  Borgila  was first owned by shipowner and Naval Minister Dan Broström but was bought by grandfather Hugo H after Mr Broström suddenly died in 1925, only 55 years of age.

13563_7_019_00000014_6_small

Hugo Heyman

Both Mr Broström and grandfather were active members of GKSS but the two gentlemen knew each other from business as well, because Hugo Heyman was one of the driving forces in the development of Götaverken, the great ship yard in Gothenburg. Dan Broström was the biggest shareholder of the yard  and his shipping company Broströms ordered most of its ships from Götaverken .

Let’s not try to wind the world back to those days but it seems the world was smaller then, and Sweden was perhaps a bit bigger. Götaverken was the world’s largest shipyard in the 1930s and Hugo Heyman was later CEO of the yard, after the war.

borgila_SeglandeWEB_01

Borgila, 1924

Anyway, grandfather Hugo Heyman kept the 6-metre Borgila  until the late 1940s.

Like most 6-metres, Borgila  was probably fine for taking the family out on a sunny Sunday but very very wet in a blow. My father who was a keen sailor described her as a torpedo with sails, running right through the short, choppy waves in the Kattegat.

I was born a little too late to remember her. But nothing of all this has anything much to do with the following design, anyway:

______________________________

A 10-METRE CLASSIC

(however not a racing yacht, and not according to the international rule), design study for a yacht of an era when times were not necessarily better, and boats were not necessarily inferior.

This design study was made in 1998, inspired by sailing clients and boat builders talking dreamingly about long, sleek yachts of the past. Being asked for my opinion of such yachts I would usually take time to explain why boats of more moderate proportions make more sense. Still, things are never that simple and the perfect yacht does not come in one shape only.

10-metre R Yacht - Copy (4)_01

The merits of a narrow yacht with long overhangs can not be understood if it is simply compared to other yachts of the same overall length. Yachts of this kind should instead be compared to others of the same displacement or waterline length. This design is 60’ long, has the interior of a 50’+ Classic and sails like a sub-50’ modern cruiser-racer but with more easy, predictable handling qualities.

Racing in 10-metre yachts would certainly be an overwhelming experience. And if built on similar hulls, keels and rigs and with equal distribution of weights they can certainly be raced against each other. But the real beauty is that they would be equally suited for just ghosting along without much fuzz an afternoon when you simply cannot resist the breeze .

The main differences between this design and an old-time 10-metre are in the hull shape and materials, and these differences are so great that the two basic types of boat will show vastly different characteristics:

10-metre R Yacht - Copy (3)

Hull building techniques including cored laminates with multidirectional rovings on PVC closed-cell foam core or, for a one-off hull, strip-planked red cedar. Whatever technique chosen, it will produce a hull with a quality, strength, stiffness, impact resistance, sound insulation, thermal insulation and low weight that simply was not conceivable in the old days. In addition, bulkheads and other large panels should be cored in order to bring unnecessary weight down. And a more modern rig and sails, with a carbon fibre mast in particular, will improve the yacht’s stability and motion in a seaway.

10-metre R Yacht - Copy (2)_01

Looking back at this design now in 2016, almost 20 years later, there are a number of details I stumble upon. In order to preserve her standing headroom without making her unduly high, I think she ought to be a little longer overall, which would also allow her superstructure to be made a little lower. Apart from that I feel her counter stern should be longer, and her bow shape needs more character. My tastes appear to have changed over the years but she was also nothing but a quick draft when I made the design. I think, today, I would have made her between 64 and 68 feet.

In all, despite any rational objections one might have against classic yachts of her kind with slender hull shapes, flush decks and long overhangs, this design should prove functional and very rewarding to sail. And, given some work, she could also be made beautiful to behold.

A yacht of this kind could be built by any skilled European or North American yard but, because of the character of the design, it only makes sense to go for the best finished, highest quality product.

Description

BEAUTIFUL 10 METER R-YACHT IN MAHOGANY AND FIR ON OAK. THIS INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL 10 METER YACHT was built in Svendborg in 1923 by Sophus Weber. The boat's name is AAWORYN. Construction number 10 D5. THIS UNIQUE YACHT HAS WON SEVERAL RACES AROUND THE WORLD - IT IS EVEN EXTREMELY FAST - WHILE THE COMFORT ON BOARD SHOULD BE IN ORDER. Built on cross frames. Hull painted white mahogany above the waterline, fir below the waterline. Current owner - since 1979 - has completely restored the boat between 1979 and 1988. The hull has been epoxy-treated (West method), new planks, keel plank, deck, Oregon pine on plywood, various frames, and much more. The boat received a new mast in 2007. This "Eyecatcher" is ONLY being sold due to age... The owner's age. However, the owner is still an active sailor - this summer (2018) he sailed 1,500 nautical miles singlehandedly in the boat... Under 10mR-Yacht, you can read much more about these incredible boats. Also, see these links: http://classicyachtinfo.com/ http://classicyachtinfo.com/yclass/10-metre/ The international 10-meter class is a design class, which means that the boats are not identical but are all designed to meet specific measurement formulas, in this case, the international rule. Trojan 10.8 Meter Convertible

With comments on the 10 meter, by david pascoe.

There aren't a lot of boats in this size range that we would consider to be exceptionally well built, but the Bertram-Trojan line of International Meter series certainly meets that criteria. Designed by Fort Lauderdale designer Harry Schoell, the 10.8 meter is one of the most well-built production line hulls around. And to top it off the layout and systems engineering is nearly as good. A near identical twin to the popular Trojan 10 meter, it is nearly three feet longer. In fact, this review will apply equally well to both the 10 and 12 meter models. This is one of the roomiest convertible sedans around. And unlike a lot of other boats, it achieves this without sacrificing basic integrity such as eliminating bulkheads.

Let's start with the fact that when I took my steel surveying hammer to the bottom of this hull, it rang like the hull was steel. Thick and dense. No dull "thunks" on the bottom of this one, and no blisters or floppy hull sides either. Then we counted three full size bulkheads, to which we add a deck that's properly attached to the hull, good sized hull stringers and a deck that's about as solid as walking on a concrete pier and we sum up that this is one well-built boat. Surprisingly, this is not a heavy boat, coming in at around 15,000 lbs. as compared to the Bertram II 35' convertible at 23,000 lbs. Bertram-Trojan has managed to keep the weight where its needed and cut it where its not.

Trojan 10.8 meter (1)

Looking forward toward galley and large dinette that converts to a large double berth. Notice the amount of light that the skylight lets in. The lamp below it is NOT turned on, despite the appearance. No wide angle lens used to take these photos so they are not distorted.

Trojan 10.8 meter (4)

The galley down arrangement is separated from the salon by this small bar top that can be utilized as shown here, or ignored by placing another chair in front of it. The traffic pattern is convenient from the aft door all the way forward.

The deck has to be solid because, if you check out the nearby photos you'll see that there's nothing supporting the aft end. There is enough deflection right in way of the cabin windshield that a bit of movement does cause the windows to leak a bit, but the manner in which the frames were installed thoughtfully includes a small coffer dam that prevents most of that water from getting inside to do any damage (photo above right and at bottom of page). It has top quality anodized window frames that, along with the aft sliding doors, after ten years showed no corrosion and only minor leakage. Also chalk that up to a heavily constructed house and decks.

We liked the fiberglass head liner in the salon as well. No need to worry about stains or tearing it open with fishing rods and whatnot. And considering that the salon air conditioner is on the bridge with the outlet in the overhead, you don't have to worry about condensation stains either. The forward section has an ultra suede headliner which, lacking any water stains means that there were no leaks, even around the skylights or bow hatch.

The layout of this 35 footer is one of the best we've seen and the interior has the feel of a much bigger boat. That's mainly because of the openness between the salon, galley and dinette area. And here's one designer that achieved that sense of openness with sacrificing bulkheads like we find in most other boats. There aren't many that you can get a sofa, large swivel chair and two barstool type chairs in the salon, but this one handles the furniture without forcing you to fall over it. On the other hand, this is only a single stateroom boat, so it should be spacey. On the 10 meter model, that's not quite the case. It comes with a built in sofa with storage underneath and, although comfortable the salon is noticeably smaller.

The dinette is lengthwise along the starboard side so its not quite as convenient, but it makes up into a heck of a large double berth. The galley doesn't have enough counter space, but then what 35 footer does? This one makes good use of the available space without feeling claustrophobic or cramped, and has lots of nooks and crannies for storing stuff with adequate space for things like pots and pans for the serious cruiser. One complaint is that the double basin stainless sink must have been obtained in the land of very little people because you can't lay down a dinner plate or wash a pot in it. Its that small. Replacing with a single basin would be a good idea here.

Trojan 10.8 meter (2)

What this galley lacks most is adequate counter space and a useable sink. The small double basin job on this boat is nearly useless. Otherwise, there is adequate storage. 10 years old, the interior has held up well.

Trojan 10.8 Meter (3)

Starboard aft side of salon. With all the fabric upholstered panels and valences, the fiberglass headliner is hardly noticeable. There are lots of nice touches like the fire extinguisher cove at right and handy shelving along the sides.

The head is equally good sized with a stall shower that can actually be used. The solid Lucite white skylights above the head and dinette are a real nice touch, which makes both areas light and airy. This survey model was a one-owner boat that, being ten years old, we found it hard to believe that the owner said the interior decor was all original. These boats come very nicely decorated standard and the materials used holds up very well indeed. We grant you that this was a very meticulous owner and the average boat probably wouldn't look this good.

This would make a great sport fisherman because the cockpit space is more than adequate, even with the optional tackle center with bait freezer which is behind the bridge ladder, not taking up valuable space. The deck is very solid and uncluttered with good gutters around the hatches. If you like in-hatch bait, fish or storage boxes, this one has them. The cockpit deck is quite low so there's not a lot of storage space below. The center section is completely taken up with the single 300 gallon fuel tank. You can reach the steering gear fairly well, but that aft bilge pump is nearly out of reach. This one had a bolt-on very wide swim platform but its too bad there's no transom door.

The bridge is about as large as you'll get on this size boat. We like the trade off of slightly cramped seating in front of the helm console in favor of adequate room for swiveling helm chairs behind it. The helm is in the center and a person can actually get between the chairs and railing without making the operator step out the way like getting into a center seat in a movie theater. The wheel and controls are well-placed, although there's a shortage of space to mount larger instruments. Probably the most out-of-place item on this boat is the chintzy, thin, black plastic instrument panel which on many other boats we've found to be cracked and faded. This one had been kept covered up so it looked okay.

The bridge on the 10 meter, like just about every 33 footer, is cramped. As usual, the designer tries to put too much up there so that the whole layout suffers. There's no space on the helm console and there's no space even to bend over between the helm chairs to reach for anything in the cabinets below. If a boat ever needed an overhead cabinet on a pipe frame top, its this one.

Trojan 10.8 Meter (6)

This view shows the treatment of the forward window frames which, especially with the curved section, are prone to leakage. Look closely and you can see that the frame is in front of the small raised coaming so that any leakage drains back out, and not into the interior to cause damage.

Trojan 10-8 Meter (5)

This shot of the engine room is taken from the open center hatch. Its shallow but your won't kill yourself trying to change oil or check on things. Nearly everything is conveniently located for servicing, including the strainers. Generator is to the right in front of engines, easily serviced.

The bridge coaming is very thin glass and on many of these we've found it to be buckled and warped where its screwed down around the base. This can be prevented by drilling oversize holes and using Teflon washers under the screw heads so that expansion and contraction during heating and cooling doesn't cause it to buckle. Also, the access hatch cover on the bench beside the helm is not properly sealed. It leaks and the water runs down the starboard side house pilaster and may damage the air-conditioning controls, as well as staining the interior fabric.

Unfortunately, the hull shape won't quite give the performance of a Bertram or Blackfin, but its adequate in my view to handle the moderate stuff. With 350 hp Crusader gas engines, the speed is probably not what you'd like it to be as it tops out at around 22 knots with a clean bottom. Another 50 hp would do wonders - to the speed and the fuel bill. With these engines, there's adequate space in the engine room. But with the optional 300 hp Detroit Diesels, its badly cramped and the boat becomes grossly under powered to boot. That's the one big-time drawback with this boat -- you got all that wonderful interior space at the expense of engine room space. And as near as I can tell, Cat 3208's will not fit in this one.

Considering the 8,000 lb. difference in weight with the Bertram 35, we're wondering where the loss of speed came from because the B-35 will do about the same with those engines. We'd have thought that she'd get up to at least 25 kn. at 4000 RPM on engine rated at 4000 to 4400 RPM, and wondering about the 1.88:1 Borg-Warner gear boxes. Seems a lot of reduction for a 15,000 lb. boat. Would it do better with 1.55:1?

With the gas engines and 7.5 kw Onan generator, this engine room is intelligently laid out, and if you take the hatches up (they weigh a ton and you gotta move the sofa out to do that) there isn't anything down there that can't be easily reached. A very nice touch for do-it-yourselfers. Hardware and systems are all good quality and have held up well with good maintenance. The electrical system is well engineered. The engine room ventilation is not as good as it should be an was pulling a bit of a vacuum; when we opened the hatch we got another 50 RPM.

The engine room on the 10 meter is just plain cramped. To do any kind of maintenance you need to clear all the furniture out an pull the hatches, a job for two people. Once that's done you can reach most everything, sometimes with a bit more effort than you'd like.

Another draw back is that the gel coat is not top quality and this boat needed painting. The house sides and bridge coaming were blotchy and discolored, possibly due to prior damage repairs, or from original molding defect repairs. Hard to say which. With a urethane paint job this boat would really shine and look as good as new. No cheap, tacky hardware on this one, except for the crummy feature stripe tape. They also had a molded plastic bezel under that nice stainless grill over the engine room vents that goes the way of the instrument panel. On this boat they had been replaced with fiberglass upgrades and looked fine.

Overall, we would rate this as a truly great boat, especially for family cruising or just partying. Another aspect of great design is that one can move around freely without falling over and banging into things. This one won't wear you out by the end of the day. After ten years of heavy use (2000 hours) in Florida, except for the oxidized gel coat this boat still looks great. We rate it as a best buy.

Note: The Trojan 10,11 and 12 meter models are all of equally good quality and are available in both the convertible and express models. If you want better diesel performance, you'll need to move up to the 11 or 12 meter model where Cat 375's or Detroit Diesel 450's are available. The bigger diesels also fit in the express models because of a higher deck. If you're a speed freak, you'll like the express with 450's; its a screamer.

“Zephyr represents a harmonious balance of bold creativity and enduring style, making it a standout in any era,” Dörries Yachts CEO Henning Dörries told Robb Report via email.

“The final design is not only stunning but also boasts a timeless appeal with modern surfacing and meticulous detailing,” added H2 owner Jonny Horsfield. “Featuring expansive glass and spacious outdoor decks, Zephyr epitomizes the contemporary preferences of today’s discerning clientele.”

The interior is sure to be gargantuan, though Dörries has yet to specify the gross tonnage. The German shipyard also didn’t share any details regarding the layout of the living quarters, but pictures of the exterior show that Zephyr will certainly not be short on luxury amenities.

Zephyr Megayacht

Starting at the top, the sundeck is adorned with a plunge pool and sun pads forward and a large circular lounge aft. Alfresco dining areas big enough for 12 and more plush lounges grace the next two decks, while an inviting Jacuzzi occupies pride of place in the bow. The bow is so long it can also accommodate a helicopter that can be used for comings and goings. The owner’s suite will likely have private access to the bow area, as is customary with many high-end cruisers.

Dörries Yachts has unveiled some pretty extraordinary megayachts and explorers over the past few years, but Zephyr is perhaps one of the most divine designs. The best part? The megyacht is up for sale. More details will be announced at the Monaco Yacht Show in late September, with a full sales brochure also available to interested buyers.

Walloon Yacht Club celebrates 90 years of a sailboat first built in the area

9&10 Logo

WALLOON LAKE — In celebration of this summer’s 90th anniversary of the “17 Square Meter” sailboats, the Walloon 17 Foundation is hosting a Media Race on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The race will kick off at 2 p.m., featuring the sailboats first made in Walloon Lake in 1934. The Walloon 17 Foundation was formed to protect, preserve and perpetuate the 17 Square Meter Class of sailboat.

This includes the design, the boats, and the history of the 17s. The Foundation sponsors training, races and other events to promote 17s and administers the 17 Class.

The first boat, 17 #1, was built on Walloon over the winter of 1933-34 by Bill Loughlin & Henry (Jordan) Cawthra and she again sails on Walloon Lake after a recent renovation.

A total of 42 17s have been built over their 90-year history, first in wood and later in fiberglass. These boats still actively race 17s on Walloon Lake, the only fleet in existence, thanks to the Walloon Yacht Club and its members.

The 17 Square Meter is a one-design sailing yacht with a sloop rig and spinnaker with a fixed keel with 850 pounds of cast iron or lead and a 1620-pound sailing displacement. It is 24.9 inches in Length, 5′ 1 ½ inches in Beam with 17 square meters (183 square feet) of sail area, originally.

The Class ensign, a red 17 in a Square indicates the vessels are a Square meter boat versus the 12 Meter Class which has a line under the 12 indicating a linear rule.

The 12 Meter class raced for the Americas Cup from 1958-87 and other classes are also designed to the linear International Rule, like the 6 Meter Class. There were other popular Square Meter boats such as the 22 Square Meter.

The final diving event at the Paris Olympics will kick off Friday with the prelims of the men’s 10m platform. Here's a look at how the competition works, the schedule for all three rounds, and the names to know ahead of Wednesday’s preliminary round.

How does the competition work?

Each individual diving competition will consist of three rounds. The prelims will feature 34 divers, with the top 18 moving on to the semifinals. From there, the top 12 will compete in the finals. Those tied for 18th or 12th will also move on. Scores do not carry over from round to round.

In the event of a tie among the top three at the end of the finals, multiple medals will be awarded.

In platform competition, each diver must perform a dive from six different categories: armstand, forward, backward, reverse, inward, and twisting.

How are they scored?

Divers are judged on starting position, approach, take-off, flight, and entry into the water. Each dive is given a degree of difficulty before it is performed, but divers are judged regardless of how difficult the dive is. After each dive, seven judges give their score, with the two highest and two lowest discarded. The remaining three scores are added, multiplied by the degree of difficulty, and boom — that’s how you calculate the scores.

Preliminary round – Friday at 4 a.m. ET Semifinals – Saturday at 4 a.m. ET Finals – Saturday at 9 a.m. ET

  • The U.S. leads all nations with 30 medals in the men’s platform, but the last American medal came courtesy of David Boudia when he won bronze in 2016. Boudia is also the last American gold medalist in the event, which he won in 2012.
  • China has won gold in men’s platform the last two Olympics, and has won at least one medal in each of the last 10 Games.

Who to watch

  • Cao Yuan (China) – Cao is competing in his fourth Olympics and is looking to become the first diver since Greg Louganis in 1988 to repeat as Olympic gold medalist in the men’s platform. The Tokyo gold was Cao’s third Olympic win, and he’s the only diver in history to win gold medals in three different diving events. He started with the synchro platform in 2012, and followed with gold in the springboard in 2016. Since Tokyo, Cao didn’t compete at the 2022 or 2023 world championships, but finished second at worlds earlier this year.
  • Yang Hao (China) – Cao finished second at this year’s worlds to Yang, who is making his Olympic debut. He already has a gold medal at this year’s Games in the synchro platform. Yang finished seconds at worlds in 2022 and 2023.
  • Carson Tyler (USA) – Making his Olympic debut, Tyler is the first American man since 2000 to compete in both the individual springboard and platform events at a single Games. The 20-year-old already has a fourth place finish in Paris in the springboard finals , and is stronger on the platform, where he’s a two-time NCAA champion at Indiana University (2023 and 2024) and a world bronze medalist in the mixed synchro (an event not held at the Olympics).
  • Brandon Loschiavo (USA) – Loschiavo found out he would be going to the Olympics one day before the Opening Ceremonies. The 27-year-old earned the Olympic spot after the U.S. was awarded an additional quota spot in the platform when another foreign athlete dropped out of the competition. Loschiavo finished second in the platform at the U.S. Olympic Trials, but at the time the U.S. has only earned one spot in the event for the Paris Games. He finished 11th at the most recent world championships.
  • Cassiel Rousseau (Australia) – The only time in the last four years a Chinese diver didn’t win gold at the world championships was in 2023, and that was thanks to Rousseau, who bested Yang and Cao for a world title that year, the first ever for Australia in that event. Rousseau, 23, didn’t compete at this year’s worlds so he could instead prepare for Paris. He already has a sixth place finish in the synchro platform event last week.
  • Oleksii Sereda (Ukraine) – Sereda is looking to become the first Ukrainian man to medal in men’s platform at the Olympics. He finished third at the 2024 worlds, and sixth at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • Randal Willars (Mexico) – The 22-year-old finished fourth at the world championships this year, and has an outside chance at a medal in his first Olympics.
  • Rikuto Tamai (Japan) – Tamai was Japan’s youngest diving national champion when he won in 2019 at 12 years old. The now 17-year-old will be competing in his second Olympics. He finished seventh in Tokyo, and won silver at the world championships in 2022.
  • Noah Williams (Great Britain) – The silver medalist in the synchro platform last week, Williams now tries for another medal at his first Olympics. He finished seventh in the individual platform at worlds this year.
