lauderdale yacht club board of directors

Founded in 1938, Lauderdale Yacht Club has always been a traditional private club run by its Members with the focus of a family friendly environment. We are hidden in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, Florida in a peaceful residential neighborhood right off the Intracoastal Waterway.

In 1927, August Burghard, a journalist who would later become a Club Member, wrote an article in the local newspaper pointing to Fort Lauderdale’s unique position as a city of navigable inland waterways, with only the lack of a yacht club to enhance its attraction for visiting yachtsmen and residents alike.  Actions were set in motion and cumulated with a discussion aboard the schooner Abenaki, belonging to the late Harlow N. Davock. That discussion resulted in the organization of the Lauderdale Yacht Club and the Club was founded in June 1938.

It was natural then that such men as Mr. Davock and the late A.H. Brook, both of whom were Members of the New York Yacht Club, should help to plan a club primarily for those people genuinely interested in encouraging the sport of sailing and boating. This stipulation appears in the original charter, which was adopted at the first official meeting of The Lauderdale Yacht Club, June 28, 1938, at the home of C.L. Chancey. The club site was a gift of land donated by Mr. Chancey.

As defined in the charter (Article II), the club’s purpose was … “to promote the science of seamanship and to provide and maintain a clubhouse, piers and anchorage for the recreation of its Members and to make available for the youth of the club the opportunity to learn and practice seamanship and to render benevolent aid to the youth of the community interested in learning seamanship.”

Lauderdale Yacht Club has evolved into a Membership of the most respected families in the community. Many of the political, professional, and social leaders of Fort Lauderdale are among its Membership, which now totals just under 1,000. The club is owned by its Members. We the employees are actually working for them.

Each year the Membership elects a Board of Governors in order to set policy and administer the desires of the Membership. The chain of command is as follows:

COMMODORE

VICE COMMODORE

REAR COMMODORE

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

GENERAL MANAGER

In addition, there are numerous committees, appointed by the Commodore, which run the various activities and assist management in the affairs of LYC. The General Manager oversees the running of Lauderdale Yacht Club and hires Department Heads to supervise the day-to-day operation of the various departments. The Lauderdale Yacht Club Mission Statement includes LYC taking an active role in teaching sailing and seamanship to the community and Summer Camp is that opportunity! Summer Sailing is open to children of both Members and Non-Members alike.

MERCURY MENTORS- Ages 5-7 (Introduction to Sailing, 9 AM – 1 PM)

The Mercury Mentor Program is for beginning sailors ages 5-7 years old who want to get acquainted with the water! Mercury Mentors takes place during the Summer, Fall and Spring programs, so this is a real year-round program. We have a full array of curriculum which starts with water awareness and swim testing, safety and most importantly sailing and fun sailing games! The Mercury Mentor program uses LYC provided 15′ Mercury sailboats that fit multiple young sailors along with an instructor while they sail in the Stranahan River basin right in front of LYC! This is meant to be a stress free environment that helps young sailors feel safe on the water leading into a life of watersport activities.

OPTI LEARN TO SAIL- Ages 8-12 (Learn to Sail in an Optimist, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM)

Opti Learn to Sail focuses on basic sailing skills for beginners. New young sailors learn to steer and trim trim sails, parts of sailboats, knots, teamwork, competition, as well as learning about the environment. This class is designed to teach children self-reliance and esteem through sailing and boat care. The curriculum incorporates fun games and activities to introduce sailors to basic seamanship while they sail in front of LYC. This is a lead-in for LYC’s Fall Sailing Program if your sail wants to continue sailing!

420 Learn to Sail – Ages 12-17 (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM )

This learn to sail course is sailed on the 420 Sailboat, which is sailed by two people. Don’t worry, you don’t have to have a partner when you register- we’ll pair you up! The program not only teaches sailing, but how to be a great teammate and partner. This is for sailors who are bigger (125 lbs.+) and are in middle or high school. This is the beginner course for our fall 420 Program!

Marine Industries Association of South Florida announces new board members

lauderdale yacht club board of directors

The Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) held its annual meeting at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. This year’s meeting and awards luncheon marked the return to a live event and was emceed for the second year in a row by former Denver Bronco’s running back, broadcaster, and author, Reggie Rivers, who hosted the association’s virtual meeting last year. In recognition of continued safety, event attendance was limited, and social distancing protocols were in place.

Doug West, Chairman of the MIASF Board of Directors, announced the newly and re-elected board members. “On behalf of the entire MIASF board, we are delighted to welcome aboard Chuck Cashman of MarineMax, Bob Denison of Denison Yachting, and Danny James of Compass Logistics & Marine as our newest board members. We also extend a hearty congratulations to Megan Washington of Pier Sixty-Six Marina on her re-election.”

MIASF CEO/President Phil Purcell discussed the year in review and praised the entire marine industry for its fortitude and resilience during a tumultuous time in history. “Despite the challenges presented by the global pandemic, the marine industry quickly took action to become adept at thriving in very trying times. This is a testament to the creativity and commitment of industry leaders, government officials at the local, state, and national levels, investors, and all the workers who banded together to not only keep the industry afloat but move it forward to unprecedented levels of growth.”

The event was also an opportunity for MIASF to honor individuals and businesses within the industry and community whose outstanding achievements and contributions represent excellence and had positive and significant impacts on the South Florida recreational marine industry.

This year’s prestigious Golden Anchor Award was presented to Andrew Doole of Informa Markets. Informa was the driving force behind maintaining the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show as a live event, with robust safety and health protocols in place. Doug West received the 2021 Award of Excellence for his work at Lauderdale Marine Center throughout the past year.

Other guests were also recognized for their commitment to the marine industry. This year, Broward County Mayor Steve Geller, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, and Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Steve Glassman all received Marine Industry Advocate awards.

Additionally, the Frank Herhold Memorial Scholarship was presented to Megan McGrath, a graduate student at Nova Southeastern University, where she is studying the presence of UV-filters in ambient seawater and their possible impact on staghorn coral fecundity.

MIASF is the largest marine trade organization in the Southeast United States, and is dedicated to promoting, protecting and growing the 142,000 marine-related jobs in the region.

This beacon provides an assessment of a charity's financial health (financial efficiency, sustainability, and trustworthiness) and its commitment to governance practices and policies.

Key Accountability Metrics

Industry professionals strongly recommend an independent governing body to allow for full deliberation and diversity of thinking on governance and other organizational matters. We check to see that a majority of board members are identified as independent on their tax form.

Source: IRS Form 990

Industry professionals strongly recommend an independent governing body to allow for full deliberation and diversity of thinking on governance and other organizational matters. For most organizations, we check to see if the organization has at least three independent board members. For large, donor-funded organizations, we check to see if the organization has at least five independent board members

A diversion of assets — any unauthorized conversion or use of the organization's assets other than for the organization's authorized purposes, including but not limited to embezzlement or theft — also can seriously call into question a charity's financial integrity. We review the charity's most recent IRS Form 990 to see if the charity has reported any diversion of assets.

Tax Form Disclosures and Policies

Charity Navigator looks for a website on the IRS Form 990 as an accountability and transparency metric.

Nonprofits act in the public trust and reporting publicly on activities is an important component.

Charity Navigator looks for the existence of a conflict of interest policy on the IRS Form 990 as an accountability and transparency measure.

This policy protects the organization and by extension those it serves, when it is considering entering into a transaction that may benefit the private interest of an officer, director and/or key employee of the organization.

Charity Navigator looks for the existence of a whistleblower policy per the IRS Form 990 as an accountability and transparency measure.

This policy outlines procedures for handling employee complaints, as well as a confidential way for employees to report financial or other types of mismanagement.

Charity Navigator looks for the existence of a document retention and destruction policy per the IRS Form 990 as an accountability and transparency measure.

This policy establishes guidelines for the handling, backing up, archiving and destruction of documents. These guidelines foster good record keeping procedures that promote data integrity.

Charity Navigator looks to confirm on the IRS Form 990 that the organization has this process in place as an accountability and transparency measure.

An official record of the events that take place during a board meeting ensures that a contemporaneous document exists for future reference.

Website Disclosures

For almost all charities, we check the charity's IRS Form 990 to see if it discloses that the Form 990 is available on the charity's website. As with the audited financial statement, donors need easy access to this financial report to help determine if the organization is managing its financial resources well.

Financial Metrics

The Liabilities to Assets Ratio is determined by Total Liabilities divided by Total Assets (most recent IRS Form 990). This ratio is an indicator of an organization's solvency and/or long-term sustainability.

The Program Expense Ratio is determined by Program Expenses divided by Total Expense (average of most recent three IRS Forms 990). This measure reflects the percent of its total expenses a charity spends on the programs and services it exists to deliver.

Additional Information

This chart displays the trend of revenue and expenses over the past several years for this organization, as reported on their IRS Form 990.

April 2021

From the Captain's Chair: Reflecting on Our Past Accomplishments

With our annual meeting just a few weeks away, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida team has been reflecting on all that has transpired in the past 12 months. Of course, the pandemic and its impact on our region’s citizens and economy is front of mind. Yet once you get past the unsettling nature of shelter in place orders, masking mandates, and the “should I or shouldn’t I” vaccination questions now being asked, there is a lot to celebrate.

MIASF worked tirelessly to find solutions to overcome the hurdles brought by COVID-19. From partnering with Informa to create a safe and secure in-person Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show to redesigning annual events like the 44th Broward County Waterway Cleanup and the Plywood (now Cardboard) Regatta, we ensured none of MIASF’s important events were cancelled. While the events looked different from past years, the essence remained unchanged – to support and promote the marine industry.

Our approach to this year’s annual meeting is no different. Although ongoing health and safety concerns required us to rethink the usual format of a dinner meeting and awards ceremony, the show will go on. This year’s MIASF Annual Meeting will be a luncheon at the newly refurbished Lauderdale Yacht Club on May 20th.  Attendance will be limited to maintain comfortable social distancing standards.

What won’t change is that we will use this opportunity to announce the results of our association elections. Likewise, local, state, and federal lobbyists will be on hand to give legislative updates. The luncheon will also be our opportunity to share important milestones and shine a light on upcoming events in our vibrant South Florida marine industry.

One such event is the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation’s Gold Star event. This private sailing camp provides an opportunity for 12 children who lost a parent in military combat to learn to sail. These children will learn the basics of sailing during the week-long camp to be held in June.

And, of course, our annual meeting would not be complete without the presentation of our Golden Anchor award. As is tradition, this year’s recipient is someone who has demonstrated service to the community and lifetime dedication, excellence, and advocacy to the marine industry.

This year’s annual meeting will be hosted by Reggie Rivers, retired Denver Broncos running back, professional broadcaster, and motivational speaker. Distinguished invited guests include several elected officials. These government officials have been steadfast supporters of the marine industry. They were also instrumental in getting the industry designated an essential business at the start of the pandemic, thus keeping our workers employed.

On behalf of the entire MIASF team, I want to thank you for your ongoing membership and support of the marine industry. We look back on the past year with appreciation for what we accomplished and look forward to the coming 12 months with anticipation and excitement about what we will achieve together.

Phil Purcell

Advocacy Report

Advocacy Report

In Tallahassee, Covid-19 Lawsuit Protection was the first bill to reach the Governor’s desk in this year’s legislative session. Florida businesses, governments and healthcare providers will be protected from coronavirus lawsuits if they have made a good effort to follow safety guidelines. The law will apply retroactively to the beginning of the pandemic, giving businesses one less thing to worry about.

Many bills are still in the deal stages and have not reached the Governor’s desk. Among those are time restrictions on anchoring, locations of no discharge zones, and how better to manage or prevent derelict vessels. Also being watched closely by our partners at IYBA is a bill that reviews and determines continued need for state licensing of certain occupations.

Last week, Broward County passed an ordinance adding additional management requirements to the slips allocated to the manatee protection. The new ordinance gives 2 years plus a 1-year extension to build permitted slips, or they return to the pool to accommodate the next project on the waiting list.

MIASF’s Foreign Trade Zone currently consists of 5 active marine facilities, Lauderdale Marine Center, Bahia Mar Yachting Center, Pier 66 Marina, Taylor Lane Yacht and Ship, and Seahaven Superyacht Marina, as well as Fassmer, which is a land-based operation that manufactures and services small/medium boats like rescue boats and RIBS. We are currently refining the guidelines and will be coordinating with the facilities and MIASF member customs brokers to assure consistency throughout the zone.  MIASF was the first marine zone of this structure to be approved so there was no model to follow and its benefits with review and improvement as we grow.

MIASF continues to participate as part of the committee in a NOAA funded project to capture stakeholder input on Coral Reef preservation. Last month a public meeting attended virtually by over 100 people identified many concerns ranging from septic tanks and sewage to no fishing zones. Everyone agrees protecting the reef is critical. The path on how to accomplish it is the source of most discussion.

Be sure to attend MIASF’s annual meeting on May 20th and meet our Federal, State and Local lobbyists. Duncan Smith, Teye Reeves, and Matt Sacco will give you a firsthand report of the legislative climate from their point of view.

Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program Report

Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program Report

Apprentices in the Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program (YSTAP) had a busy March.  Our class of 2021 spent the month learning new material in the Pumps, Plumbing, and Pipe Fitter Module.  Classes focused first on pump types and characteristics as well as advantages and disadvantages of different pump types.  Several pump types were included so the class had a clear understanding of common pumps used on yachts like impeller, diaphragm, gear, piston, vane, and more.  PTO vs electrical motor pumps were also discussed in this module.  Next on the agenda is marine piping types and regulations regarding the installation of piping including supporting, protecting, and choosing the proper material.

March was the third month of classes for MIASF’s new class of 2022!  The apprentices completed the Safety Module strong and tested out on three topics - Scaffolding, Common Shipyard Terms, and Yacht Systems & Parts.  The 2022 class has now moved into the Employability Module where the classes offer a refresher on the personal and professional skills required to survive in today’s working environment. Once this section is completed they get into the more technical topics starting with the Heavy Lifting Module first.

Great News!!! Our next class for YSTAP begins in January and we are looking to add more sponsoring businesses and apprentices for our upcoming class.  For more information on how to become a participating employer or an apprentice, please contact program coordinator & instructor Jon Lowell at [email protected] .

Business Highlight: Bradford Marine

Business Highlight: Bradford Marine

Since 1966, Bradford Marine has been a cornerstone of Fort Lauderdale’s boating industry, welcoming guests from around the world to its convenient marina on the New River. So, when an industry legend like Bradford changes hands, all eyes are on the new owners to see what changes might be in store.

John and Michael Kelly have hit the ground running since taking the helm on January 1, 2019. The father-son team have continuously built upon the Bradford name with a series of strategic acquisitions and improvements over the past two years.

The duo started by purchasing Billfish Marina in May 2020, just as the pandemic roared to life. Despite the logistics of expanding a business during a global economic shutdown, their vision was unwavering. The Kellys knew the acquisition of Billfish, conveniently located just across the canal from the Bradford facility, would allow Bradford to expand its dockage and haul-out capacity. New floating concrete docks, capable of housing mega yachts of up to 180 feet are also in permitting for construction at Billfish. Today, the two locations offer 27 combined acres on the New River.

John and Michael also had a goal of creating a single point-of-service for full yacht refits. Along with Billfish Marina, they acquired PipeWelders Marine, High Seas Technology, and P&R Canvas. Together with their skilled in-house teams and hand-picked sub-contractors, Bradford is able to offer start-to-finish refitting under one roof. Their most recent project was the extensive exterior and interior refit of No Bad Ideas, a Westport 130. Completed in less than one year, a year marked by the supply chain challenges of the global pandemic, this is Bradford’s largest refit project to date.

“Having the in-house capabilities to tackle everything from superstructure expansion to interior design renovations, really allows us to showcase the capabilities of the entire spectrum of Fort Lauderdale’s marine industry,” noted Michael Kelly. “As local business owners, we feel a responsibility to promote our industry and its highly-skilled workforce through innovative, high profile projects like this one.”

While this is their first foray into owning a marine business, the Kellys are no strangers to the boating industry. Their experience began decades ago with various sizes of boats including a Viking Sport Cruisers 70, and later a custom-built Hatteras 75. Over the years, they regularly spent part of every year in Fort Lauderdale, bringing their boats south each winter for annual service. Today, they’re taking what they learned as yacht owners and applying it to the Bradford customer experience. Their goal, according to Michael, “is to exceed expectations in every transaction.”

Faces in the Industry: Julie Berry

Tell us where you are from, what brought you to Florida, and how long you’ve lived here.

I was born in Fort Lauderdale, moved to Massachusetts as a kid and spent summers at the Cape, then moved to Long Island, New York for Junior High and High School.  I have always been around the ocean and came to Florida to attend college to be near family and a warm ocean.

Where do you work, what is your job title, and what does your job entail? I am heading up the Marina Group at CBRE. My job title is Senior Vice President | CBRE Capital Markets | The Marina Group.  I exclusively represent buyers and sellers of marinas and boatyard/yacht repair facilities. Our goal is to bring buyers to sellers who are dedicated to the marine industry and will bring the marine property to the next level.   This is important as a foundation to support the huge economic impact that the marine industry has in South Florida and to support the marine businesses and employees who live off these facilities.

How did you initially become interested in the marine industry?

I come from a corporate office leasing and investment sales background. While working on a portfolio of properties that included a marina, I was attracted to the marina and all of aspects of knowledge required to complete a transaction and dealing with people in the marine industry, there is a lot of passion.  It wasn’t like that working with owners of office buildings.  I have developed incredible friendships in the marine industry and I love what I do.

What is your favorite or most valuable benefit of membership in MIASF?

FLIBS is number one.  The impact on the marine industry and hospitality as well as exposure for our area is second to none.  The fact that we own it is incredible. A close second is the advocacy efforts. MIASF battles to advocate for the businesses, yacht and boat owners, waterway access, and more.  Also important is the effort related to educating our youth and seeking internships to build a skilled trade base for our businesses.

Describe any other community organizations or events with which you are involved.

·    Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County Board member:  serving on the Yacht Rendezvous committee which raises over $1 million to help fund the 12,000 kids attending clubs in Broward County.

·    MIASF Board member: currently on the board membership support team and the long term vision team.

·    Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance Board member: serving on the Governor’s Council and the International Action Team

·    Port Everglades Action Team: Advocacy group to support growth and expansion at Port Everglades

·    Seafarer’s House Board Member– providing support to the seafarers - the men and women who serve on cargo, cruise and other ships and are out to sea for months at a time

·    Children’s Diagnostic Treatment Center Transformer: Committee to raise funds to support the efforts of this organization in providing services to youth with special health care needs.

Tell us about your hobbies and the kinds of things you do for fun.

I recently traveled to Paris, Germany and Italy with my son and brother and I want to travel much more. Closer to home, spending time in the Bahamas is a source of relaxation and a great getaway.  For hobbies, I love boating, wakeboarding, scuba diving, anything that involves the ocean and water and playing with my Golden Retrievers!

US Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation Rule Change

US Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation Rule Change

A recent rule change extends the validity of a US Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation to every 5 years instead of just one. The move was the result of Coast Guard cost-saving efforts and requirements set forth in the Frank LoBiondo Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2018 . Formerly, documentation was $26 per year and boaters could select the number of years, from one to five. The new five-year documentation cost for is fixed at $130. Additional fees apply for initial documentation as well as exchanges. The Coast Guard will not issue refunds if an owner chooses to cancel documentation before its five-year expiration or if a vessel is sold during the renewal period. Documented vessels must also be a minimum of 5 net tons, which is about the size of a 26-foot boat.

Group Health Insurance for MIASF Members

Group Health Insurance for MIASF Members

In case you missed it, MIASF now offers current members group health insurance for their employees. Interested members should contact Jim Hopgood at the John Galt Insurance Agency for a quote at [email protected] or call (954) 440-2853. Several members have already begun taking advantage of this latest benefit of membership and have offered the following testimonial:

"Gillen Yacht Services is happy to announce that we are one of the first companies to provide health insurance to our employees as a part of the MIASF newest member benefit.  Founded in 1991 our company had always provided paid health insurance to our employees.  However, 10 years ago we found that it no longer feasible to offer health insurance which subsequently forced our employees into the marketplace model.  We discovered that most of our employees opted to forgo these expensive policies and were therefore left without coverage.  Each year our company evaluated options and found that affordable plans that met both the companies and employees’ needs were just not available to us.

When we heard about MIASF’s efforts to utilize the buying power of the membership to provide a better and more affordable health insurance option to its membership - we wanted to be first in line!  Our evaluation demonstrated that not only could we provide a viable option for our employees, but with some education provided by The John Galt Insurance Agency we could work together to better manage our health insurance cost.  Our agent Jim Hopgood performed an educational seminar to train employees on how to be informed consumers who are actively involved in selecting healthcare both on cost and quality.   As a company we were able to provide a basic level of health care at no cost to our employees, while giving them the option with a small contribution to upgrade their service to a lower deductible plan.

Providing quality health care to our industry will only help us as an industry to continue to attract the talent that is needed to provide much needed services to the marine industry.  Thank you MIASF for this new member benefit."

Videoworks recently unveiled its new "Lighting Engineering" system, which is revolutionizing the design of the yachting lighting solutions.

Engineer Leo Megna, Head of Lighting and Comfort Projects at Videoworks, explains. "A new design method has been developed specifically for lighting technology, a new software created ad hoc, in collaboration with Eon Reality, which allows us to offer a highly innovative tool for the integration and control of lighting points inside the yacht with the fundamental support of virtual reality. In this way, together with the architect and the shipyard, the different lighting scenarios are optimized and then proposed to the owner, who will have an incredibly realistic view of the various rooms thanks to a 3D viewer. This will allow for all the details to be worked out before they are actually built.”

In addition to the usual design documentation detailing all aspects of lighting, virtual reality will bring the illuminated rooms to life exactly as they will be once they have been built. It will also be possible to intervene in real time to evaluate and verify changes in the diameter of the light cones, the color temperature and other variables that are always important in the definition of a lighting system. Videoworks' partner in the development of the new "Lighting Engineering" system is Eon Reality, a world leader in knowledge transfer through "Augmented and Virtual Reality" (AVR).

Making an Impact – Meet the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation

  • October 20, 2023

lauderdale yacht club board of directors

Started in 2009, the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation (LYCSF) began in an effort to make sailing accessible to young people aged eight to 18 – not only those with the means to afford it. Sailing builds character, independence, leadership skills and offers youth the opportunity to take these lessons and newfound strengths with them out into the real world.

The Sailing Foundation has served more than 800 kids in South Florida. They give scholarships and grants to young sailors to help them afford coaching and training programs and increase their chances to compete in highly competitive national and international regattas. Year to date, they have provided $42,000 to young sailors from Lauderdale Yacht Club and the community.

Gold Star Sailing Camp, Making an Impact – Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation YATCO recently sat down with Beth Rielly, the Chairwoman and President of the LYCSF to learn more about this inspiring and meaningful initiative.

lauderdale yacht club board of directors

YATCO recently sat down with Beth Rielly, the Chairwoman and President of the LYCSF to learn more about this inspiring and meaningful initiative.

The LYCSF started in 2009 – what was the catalyst to this?

Lauderdale Yacht Club Sailing Foundation was started by parents and members of the Lauderdale Yacht Club.

Many of the kids in our community never have the chance to be on the water and be in touch with the aquatic resources we have. One of the most important things we can teach the kids in our community and beyond is respect for the water and water safety. Sailing teaches self-discipline, leadership, decision making and independence.

It is important to note that the Lauderdale Yacht Club Sail Program is made up of youth sailors who are nonmembers as well as members.

lauderdale yacht club board of directors

You’ve seen many children come through your doors – why do you think sailing is such a beneficial sport to grant scholarships to?

Living in South Florida, we are surrounded by water, sailing and boating. The water and marine industry are critical in this area.

lauderdale yacht club board of directors

Yet, many of the kids in our community never have the chance to be on the water and be in touch with the aquatic resources we have. One of the most important things we can teach kids in our community and beyond is respect for the water and water safety. Sailing teaches self-discipline, leadership, decision making and independence.

In an Opti regatta, (a small boat for kids ages 7-12), the kids are up at 6:00 am rigging their own boat , sailing on an ocean or other large body of water, in wind conditions up to 20 knots for six to eight hours, sometimes longer without a break.

lauderdale yacht club board of directors

They may check in with a coach on the water but otherwise they are solely independent. What a wonderful experience and teaching opportunity for kids. At higher educational levels such as college, collegiate scholarships for sailing are not available as they are in other college sports. So, finding funding to help support these kids from the start straight through their young sailing career is important.

lauderdale yacht club board of directors

Tell us about some of the charity’s greatest achievements and milestones.

We are incredibly proud of the fact that many of our grant/scholarship recipients and camp sailors who we have supported have gone on to win world championships, national regattas and some have gone to the Olympic trials . Colleges that might not have been within a student’s grasp are now attainable thanks to a consistent sailing career. Many sailors we have supported have gone on to Ivy League schools. Others have continued sailing in college and became leaders on and off the water.

Can you share some testimonials from past families who have benefited from the LYCSF?

The coaches at the club are kind, funny and dedicate their time to making sure new sailors are taught to master their craft. Another thing that’s great about the program is the director JC allowed me to volunteer during the summer so I could give back and teach new and young sailors how to sail, that was awesome and fun; especially becauseone day I want to sail around the world and continue to give back. With that being said, living in the sailing capital of the world is pretty cool and the fact that the Foundation and the Yacht Club opened their doors to me to be a part of this world is an amazing experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything.“ Gabriel Blandon, Participant
Our family has truly been blessed by the generosity of the LYC Foundation. What they have given Gabriel, which I’m sure he’ll echo and articulate in his own words as well, has gone beyond our expectations. Our family has a deep affinity and respect for the ocean so when Gabriel was awarded a scholarship to learn to sail, it was a dream come true, as he stated in his speech. I can attest, as a parent, seeing your child grow with a better sense of self and simply thrive in their talents is very reassuring. Everyone from JC LYC Sailing Director, whom Gabe just adores, to his coaches, and the other sailors, who are some of his closest friends, embraced Gabe and by giving him an opportunity to learn to sail in turn, he unlocked himself. This program embraces children from all walks of life and shares the world of sailing which, is a more accessible way to space travel, as it’s like being on another planet, and they come back as a better version of themselves, hands down. How Ms. Rielly and the Folks at the LYC Foundation impact the lives of the children they award scholarships to is amazing and because they give it so freely from their hearts and through their diligent effort is not just a cause or a charity, it’s so much deeper, and it’s a calling that’s worth echoing.” Sherry Peters, Mother to Gabriel Above
At first I was nervous and I didn’t know anything. My family is not a family of sailors so they couldn’t talk to me about what to expect. But that summer camp was an unforgettable experience for me. I immediately fell in love with sailing. I love the wind blowing on my face and how I could go fast just with my boat and the wind. One other thing I love about sailing is the regattas. I get to visit new places with my family and my team. With the support of the LYC Foundation I’ve continued my training with the Opti Sail Green Fleet program. Sailing also changed my life because I made new great friendships and It’s helping me to overcome many obstacles. I’ve become a better sailor everyday with the help of my awesome coach Mauricio. He helped me to feel safe in the water and he has helped me to be more confident and to face my fears during the regattas. I remember on my first regatta I was very anxious and my coach talked to me and told me how lucky I was to have opportunities to feel fear in a safe place with people around me that will help me if I need it. And it was just like that. Every day now I feel less anxious.” Josephine Cheval, Participant

Can you share a bit about Gold Star Sailing Camp and why this initiative is so close to your hearts?

We were introduced to Gold Star Sailing through its founder Col. Patrick Powers. He runs a one-week camp in Newport, RI for kids who have lost a parent to military action. He started Gold Star Sailing when he realized nine years ago that there were no support services for kids with parents in the military. Once we met him and saw the success of the program in Newport, we wanted to be part of it and help these kids. Thanks to the ambition of our Board, we brought Gold Star Sailing to South Florida because it fits in with our mission.

We host an all-expenses paid one-week camp for Gold Star Kids . They have a week together to meet, and to bond with other kids in their same boat – so to speak. We spend the week with sailing as their main event but also treat them to other fun events around the area. It gets them out of the home of the grieving parent and with kids who are experiencing the same feelings they are.

Often kids are a “unicorn” in their own school, as other kids and teachers cannot understand what they are going through with losing a parent in the military. They are also susceptible to bullying and their feelings are often overlooked.

At our Gold Star Sailing Camp, we allow those bonds to form, and they have a network of friends they can call or text and be in contact with for life . One of the campers who has attended Gold Star Kids in Ft. Lauderdale for the last three years is now sailing in college! Sailing is often a sport they have never done, and it fosters confidence, teamwork, and self-reliance.

A major takeback from this program is the confidence and pride my children have had by Gold Star Sailing (GSS) Camp. The three of them knew nothing of sailing, I got the texts saying, “mom what are we doing here – this is insane” to overcoming struggles and challenges to maneuver a boat, working with a team, and at the end of the week sailing a boat on their own. (My daughter Bella, year one, was timid, shy and quiet, to Patrick making her a counselor year three because he saw something in her that she didn’t. Now, Bella won’t stop talking and is involved with four clubs at college!) We can’t forget it’s about the lifelong friends they have made as well, these kids talk several times a month if not Snapchat weekly. Going from that first year nervous as could be traveling on a plane by themselves, to “see ya in a week mom with a hug and now seeking out the fastest sailboat they have and being with coaches that inspire and push them to be better. To teach these kids you can overcome grief and it’s ok to live life is what this camp means to my family. Friends, confidence in new experiences I could not give to my girls, strength, bonds, and the pride I see when my girls talk about GSS and what they accomplished themselves is what I cherish. They build and learn more each year and take all those things I mentioned and use it every day in life. It may be only a week of camp but the impact of all of it is a lifetime. Where do you see the charity in 5 – 10 years – what’s coming next?

In five to 10 years, we hope to offer more scholarships and grants to our kids from South Florida as they grow as sailors. We would love to better support a community sailing program in Ft. Lauderdale. We hope to increase City Sailing to include high school sailing, not just sailing for elementary school age sailors. We would like to continue to support local sailing programs that offer scholarships to lower socio economic or disadvantaged youth and sailing experiences for the disabled no matter their age. We have grown in our mission because the need is evident, and the demand is growing to help kids.
