San Juan Islands Sailing Charters and Cruises

We provide yacht and crew. you relax and enjoy., the art of slow travel.

Something special happens when we cast off the dock lines and head out into the San Juan Islands on a sailing charter. We become aware of the rhythm of the tides, the wind filling the sails, the salty sea air, and the porpoise following in our wake. The hidden coves and diverse marine life of the San Juans beckon us to make discoveries and submerge ourselves in its delightfully relaxed pace.

So much of the world passes by without our being able to see, touch, or feel it. A sailing charter through the San Juan islands allows us to take a moment to slow down and experience it for ourselves.

We have been perfecting the art of “slow travel” for over 25 years. Our new 55′ sailboat Northwind , offers a luxury yacht charter experience for up to six guests in private staterooms with ensuite baths. Each one of our San Juan Sailing Charters and Inside Passage cruises are one of a kind, designed for your group from the ground up. From your preferences on food and drink , to where we go and what we see and do, the result is a perfect blending of islands, yacht, crew, and cuisine. It’s your perfect vacation, Sailing the San Juan Islands in style.

This is what a carefree sailing vacation is all about

Sailing the san juan islands.

Jon and Jette Baker Sail the San Juans Cruises

Captains Jette & Jon Baker, with TailR

A fully crewed sailing charter with Sail the San Juans is a world away from any vacation experience you probably have ever had. A sailboat charter aboard Northwind  will open a door to see and experience the more remote islands and coves that are not easily accessible to most people.

At the same time, sailing yachts are in a unique position to be less intrusive to marine mammals which helps encourage encounters with Orca, seals and porpoise.

A sailboat charter with Sail the San Juans is a first class experience, from our impeccable yacht and crew to your private chef’s menu built around your preferences.

Join us to explore over 200 forested islands, help trim the sails on Northwind, or just relax while you savor gourmet fare , and great hiking and kayaking through protected bays and inlets.

This is the art of slow travel.

Absolutely top-notch boat charter company! Their fleet is stunning, with well-equipped boats that make for a fantastic sailing experience. Safety and instruction are paramount here, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for all. As a novice boater, I felt confident and comfortable with Gary's keen instruction and read on my understanding. He's an outstanding teacher. The service is friendly, professional, and thorough, making every trip memorable. Highly recommend for both seasoned sailors and beginners!

This is a fantastic charter company. Their attention to safe sailing is epic! I was totally comfortable sailing in new waters with their detailed no sail areas marked on the local charts. We had problems with our first boat and Lothar brought us a replacement early the next morning. A charter company can not fix problems unless those problems are reported by charter guests! I will sail with them again and you should too.

san juan sailing and yachting

San Juan Sailing is THE top shelf boating experience in the Pac Northwest. The San Juan's on their own are fabulous with more than a dozen great marinas/destinations to choose from plus even more pristine natural anchorages. San Juan Sailing and Yachting makes the experience accessible and delightful. Get your cert to bareboat a power or sailboat (they offer combo classes/vacations) or hire an instructor skipper- you won't regret it. The folks at San Juan think of everything, and unlike the global charter conglomerates it's a decades old stand alone Bellingham WA professional boat chartering operation with the principals involved in the day to day guest experience operation-managing a super friendly and over the top customer service oriented staff. They all appear to really like their jobs! They also run these "flotillas" where a pro skipper takes a lead boat with some stateroom guests, plans a whole week or longer itinerary for 10 or so boats to cruise around to anchorages and marinas- in San Juan's plus many go further to Canada overnights. Great way to get introduced to sailing the local waters. You can focus on the navigating and sailing/boating and someone's already got the stops, attractions perfectly planned, plus you meet some great people with you on other boats when you dock up or moor/anchor together. You are likely to see orcas, porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals and otters. Of course bald eagles, herons and all manner of waterfowl. Get your WA shellfish license if you want to drop a pot (on the boats standard) and get some Dungeness crabs to steam up and feast on. I went on one flotilla with furthest stop Princess Luisa Sound two days north of Vancouver (May 2023) whole trip from and back to Bellingham was 10 days. We lucked out with fabulous weather so I'm almost hesitant to tell people about it because it was so incredibly stunning and enjoyable. Secret I probably should keep. All the boats are professionally maintained and the fleet is mostly new or near new and perfectly outfitted for the experience- highly recommend. Full disclosure I own one of the boats (but still a "customer" of the San Juan Sailing experience) basically just a "perfect for me" way to immerse into new sailing grounds (I'm formerly an east coast and Caribbean boater) My wife (who is the consummate fair weather sailor plus food/cocktail steward) and I love the luxe experience of taking our own boat out as "charter guests." No "boat clutter" like used to develop on my old boat. All the cleaning and linens, galley outfitting taken care of. Just show up with food and bev! Fair winds‍

We have chartered several boats both power and sailboats from San Juan Sailing. It is a well run business with quality boats to charter in it's fleet. What better place to be on the water than the San Juan Islands!

Photo of David W.

San Juan Sailing is just the Best! Wonderful experience. Sailing in the San Juan Islands is just magical. I've waited 20 years to do a bareboat charter it was everything I could have hoped. The boat was super comfortable and absolutely pristine. The family loved it. We had an instructor on board for the first night, Captain Len, and he was awesome. Really helped my relatively inexperienced crew understand their duties and the boat. After he left, everyone was very comfortable. There is absolutely nothing about the experience I would change, other than making absolutely sure I would have a reserved slip at Friday Harbor. Fortunately Captain Len was on board and saved us from what could have been an expensive and embarrassing disaster! Kudos to the entire SJS Team!

Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, including the instructor being ill, the boat's alternator malfunctioning and the entire week's weather basically being dead calm. A mechanic was ready and available at a moment's notice when the alternator needed repair, but when our instructor, Margaret Pommert, had to go to the hospital, we were left to fend for ourselves without shore power. One of my classmates, wouldn't let me turn on the head, so we had nowhere to pee in the middle of the night. The public restrooms were a half mile away. We also had no electricity that night even though the battery was at 85%. Another San Juan Sailing instructor was there when we docked but didn't help us. We had to make a sunset sail to the customs harbor on our own. One of the other students had his wife and I out on the front of the boat without warm weather gear the whole way. I asked to go get warm clothes on three times and he refused to let me. My hands were numb halfway to our destination. Margaret was still walking around. The Mrs. got sick, the morning after we were forced to sit out and freeze. We were up past 1 that morning and Margaret woke us up at 6:30 the next morning. We were never allowed to get enough sleep. When one of the owners asked me whether or not I felt I'd gotten my money's worth, I avoided the question because at that time, I most assuredly had not. But I didn't want to be a quitter. He also expressed concern about us losing our repertoire with the instructor. At that point, there was nothing but negative "repertoire" going on between Margaret and I (from my perspective). There was no schedule for meals or breaks. I felt like I had to be ON from dawn to dusk. She'd tell us to study "that part" in the book but not give us any time to study it or where to find it in the books. Our arrival back in Bellingham Harbor was moved up from Late Friday, to Early Friday, then to Thursday night then to Saturday morning. Saturday morning we didn't make breakfast because we thought we'd be done early, then we weren't done until noon. I didn't realize she didn't plan to pass me on the 104 until she took me aside. I mean Mrs. passed it without doing anything but lying in bed the last four days. There was no "oral" exam or skill review check. She didn't check each person's work as far as their jobs. One day we did absolutely nothing, learned nothing, didn't sail. (Roche Harbor day). I didn't get one hint of a positive comment until the fourth day when Margaret said, "good job". As soon as she knew I'd emailed the school, her personality and treatment of me did a complete 180. She told me the bedside table in my berth gets hot so I can't have anything on the table during the day at all. It was the only flat surface. I didn't say "Heeeeere I am" correctly...even though I drastically lengthened the Heeeeere. What's the difference? (There isn't one.) She had us put the toilet paper in a Ziploc bag and toss it in the trash bin (to cut down on smell). Waste. She decided the second time I made them that I shouldn't put more than 1 piece of cheese on the sandwiches. She had me take them apart and take the extra cheese off of them. We had 5 large bags of food left at the end. At Stewart Island, we were forced off the boat and told to take an "easy" walk to the lighthouse. My pedometer showed 7.5 miles that evening. They offered me a two-day 104 course for free. I drove the 400-mile round trip to attend, went to the marina and could not get on the boat regardless of the new instructor and different boat. They offered to take me out for free one day on a boat of my choice.I told them I'd like to go out one day on their 34' catamaran. They wrote back and told me I hadn't completed the 104, which I had, and that the offer was only applicable to a mono-hulled boat.

We've thought long and hard about whether to comment on this review. We understand that everyone has different needs and that not every instructor will be a perfect match for every student. With Margaret's sudden illness, we understand that this class experienced unusual circumstances that were not ideal, but we trust Margaret's judgement, as a professional captain and experienced instructor, to assess the capabilities of her students and choose the best path forward. As a company, we stand by Margaret's decisions. For additional perspective we wanted to share a blog post by another student on the same course: http://solopracticeuniversity.com/2018/10/11/do-you-recognize-professionalism-or-just-the-lack-of-professionalism/

I had the best experience at San Juan Sailing taking their week long cruise and learn class. The boat and provisioning were fantastic, and the location was gorgeous. What really made the biggest impact however, was our instructor Kurt Campbell. Kurt's passion, patience and experience made our learning experience joyful and fun. Thank you Kurt you are awesome!

san juan sailing and yachting

Hard to put into words how perfect the entire sailing experience was with San Juan Sailing School and the instructor, Bob Hulett. The boat was in perfect shape. The boat was amply provisioned. The staff was incredibly helpful leading up to the trip. Every part of the of the reservation, planning, and equipping was at the top of our expectations. Now, the highlight. Captain Bob Hulett. If you want to sail the San Juan Islands either as a charter--with an on-board captain, or as we did--a week of instruction to gain our 101, 103 and 104 for ourselves and our youngest son, Captain Bob is a must. His demeanor wears like a perfect pair of slippers. Whippy smart on sailing. A professional instructor (academic training as a teacher, and a life of instructor adults and kids across multiple disciplines). If you are considering sailing the San Juan Islands and want the best--we could not have been happier. He can also instruct in a broad range of additional certificates. The San Juan Islands are remote, gorgeous and a perfect combination of small fishing villages are anchorage in wilderness. Day hikes on land. Excursions for meals or drinks if you desire. Charming at all times.

We had an outstanding time! Took the 1 week course (ASA 101, 103, 104) with Capt Ryhs. Learned a lot about sailing and the San Juan Islands, in general. Highly recommended for new sailors with zero experience and 'older' ones who may already know a bit about sailing. Looking forward to chartering and taking more courses.

I just graduated the 201 ASA Basic Keelboat Instructor Course after flying up from South Texas. First off, it was sooo much better than what I expected. I've talked to others who have taken this course more locally (not going to mention the facility) and it was almost a pushover by reputation. I was pleased to find SJS was a VERY professionally ran facility and the Instructors were top notch! I learned more than anticipated and the fact that their fleet is around 50 vessels, shows that they know what they are doing! As I progress through the the ASA ranks as an instructor, I will look to them first before going anywhere else.

Escape the ordinary with a San Juan Islands yacht charter vacation.

Adventure awaits

The San Juan Islands and Gulf Islands are some of the most popular cruising areas in the world.

What is it that draws people to these islands? A big reason is because the islands are remote but accessible at the same time. A short drive from Seattle or Vancouver puts you in Anacortes, Washington, the “Gateway to the San Juan Islands.” From there, the San Juan Islands start a mere 15 miles away.

Your Cruise. Your Choice.

Once in the islands, you’ll find quaint both communities and hidden hideaway, all surrounded by a calm inland sea. Seemingly endless miles of coastline and over 100 islands give you plenty of options for exploring and relaxing. Drop anchor in a quiet cove, or tie up at one of the island marinas – it’s your choice when you charter!

Latest reviews.

"The camaraderie between these two sailors was so palpable and fun to be around, and both Scott and Todd are so mellow and easy going— we just laughed and smiled and talked about a million things and loved the time. The freedom to go where we wanted, to kayak, to sail!, to hang out on the boat, whatever we chose, made the adventure so unstructured and open.

It is hard also to find sufficient praise for the food. Todd’s food is the stuff of legends. It was beyond delicious, and so carefully crafted to our tastes!

I think anyone who likes adventure, loves sailing, and wants to be happy for six days should join Captain Scott and Todd, soon - this season when it’s all available and happening! - and call themselves blessed. A once in a lifetime experience, except I hope not, as we plan to return!"

"Wonderful hosts. Great sailing. The food was excellent and so personalized. The boat is very comfortable. Exceeded our expectations."

"After scheduling a five day sailing cruise with North West Sailing Adventures, I anticipated beautiful scenery, amazing wildlife, and incredible waterways. What I did not anticipate is the incredible professionalism, kindness and dedication of our amazing crew, Captain Scott and First Mate/Chef Todd. They were so knowledgeable of the area, and made every effort to accommodate our every wish or request. The meals were delicious, beautifully plated, as well as healthy, and the humorous banter between the crew members only added to the fun and memories of an amazing adventure!

I can say, without a doubt, that this sailing trip to the San Juan Islands with NW Sailing Adventures was, without question, one of the best vacations ever!  Thank you, Captain Scott and First Mate Todd for providing us with such a memorable adventure.  And please save us a slot next season, we will be back!”

Mae Pierini - Nipomo, CA

Our trip was a great success. We are sailors and Scott is the most knowledgeable sailor we have met. Moreover the navigation and radar equipment is top grade enabling motoring in a morning of deep fog with ease. We sailed for 4 nights (5 days) and winds enabled us to sail without motor assistance for many hours a day. The islands are lovely and a big surprise was the looming, snow capped Mt Baker in the background on several occasions. Seals were abundant and on one occasion we saw half a dozen sea lions sunning themselves on a nearby rock. Tod the mate was also the cook who trained for 2 years in a cooking school. The food was excellent and every effort was made--successfully--to meet the requests we had submitted prior to the cruise. We enthusiastically recommend this cruise company.

INSIDE PASSAGE - Desolation Sound, Broughton Archipelago & Great Bear Rainforest

We will be offering this tour again in late August/early September 2025. Please use the contact form on this page to let us know you have interest, or have any questions. Prices are yet to be determined, but will probably be around $5999 per person all inclusive of food and beverages.

Sail with us to where civilization gradually fades astern. Northwest is where we're headed, underneath a golden sky as we begin to get a taste of the wilder side of the North American coast. Natural Hot Springs, 10,000 yr old protected First Nation villages, ancient totem poles, pods of leaping dolphins, Orcas, Humpbacks, Bears, Rain Wolves. These are just some of the highlights on our farthest north tour. This is a true adventure, but with all the creature comforts and safety we've developed from over 20 years of experience with this route.

We pass north through the Inside Passage roughly retracing the route that Captain George Vancouver did in 1792. Much of the area looks the same now as it did then. With each day aboard, you'll feel a deeper connection to the natural world as you let the stresses of everyday land based life melt away.

San Juan Islands, Washington

The San Juan Islands include 172 named islands and reefs off the coast of Washington State. Departing from Anacortes, the Washington State Ferries serve Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and San Juan Island. Each island offers a unique opportunity for adventure. Activities include sailing, hiking, biking, kayaking, and enjoying the simple rustic beauty of the San Juan Islands.

The San Juan Islands enjoy a moderate year-round climate. Winters experience an average temperature of 40 degrees F, while summers enjoy a glorious average of 70 degrees F. Sailing with us in the San Juan Islands offers a chance to spot humpback whales, orcas, and minke whales, and see flower-filled meadows, mountain-framed horizons, hidden coves, and emerald waters. The beauty of this area casts a spell hard to undo.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of wildlife might i see.

The coastlines we sail are rich with life. Depending on the time of year, sea mammals you might see include Orca, Humpback and Minke Whales, Harbor Porpoise, Dahl’s Porpoise, White-sided Dolphins, Sea Otters, River Otters, Harbor Seals, and Sea Lions.

On land you have the opportunity to see Minks, Otters, Black-tailed Deer, Raccoons, and imported exotic wildlife. As we journey northward it becomes increasingly likely to find coastal Wolves, Mountain Goats, Black Bears, Grizzlies, and the White Kermode, or “Spirit” Bear.

There are too many feathered friends to list. The Bald Eagle is a daily visitor. Other favorites of ours include Oyster Catchers, Marbled Murrelettes, Scoters, and Great Blue Herons. For a truly world class natural experience the old-growth forests of northern B.C.’s Great Bear Rainforest house an especially rich and diverse community of creatures. Our unobtrusive electric powered dingy allows us the unique advantage of near silence while viewing and photographing wildlife.

What sort of clothes should I bring?

It’s best to be prepared for a temperature range of 55° to 80° F. When sailing, even on a warm summer day, the breeze experienced on deck when heading up wind can elicit the need for cozier clothing. The best dress for sailing is layers. For northern tours, close to the skin, wear a moisture wicking layer, then an insulative layer (fleece, wool...), and an outer wind/water resistant layer. Waterproof shoes or rubber boots are an advantage on deck and for getting to and exploring shorelines and estuaries. Shorts and a bathing suit are great for a summer swim or hot spring soak. For life below decks bring casual and comfortable clothing. Don’t forget your favorite pair of slippers! We’ll send you a detailed list of what to bring when you submit your reservation.

What is the weather like?

The San Juan and Gulf Islands are known for their sunny summer days. We receive about half the rain of Seattle due to the rainshadow of the Olympics and Vancouver Island mountain ranges. Temperatures range from 55°-80° F in the spring, summer, and fall, and average 40°-50° F in the winter months. The Great Bear Rainforest of northern B.C. produces more variable weather. It’s not called a rain forest for nothing! Temperatures are usually in the 60s throughout our sailing season there. You will likely encounter a mix of sunshine with occasional rain during your trip, but you will stay warm and dry in our roomy pilothouse.

What time of year should I sail with you?

It depends on what you are looking for. April and May display an incredible abundance of spring flowers. Some areas are particularly spectacular with color at this time. The sunniest and warmest months of the year are July, August, and September. This is the best time of year to see the Great Bear Rainforest. October through mid-June offers the best sailing wind and the most quiet privacy in anchorages. We have had incredible trips in January! With our heating systems and all-weather pilothouse this time of year can be a magically peaceful and comfortable experience.

What if I get seasick?

Nearly all of the waters we sail in are well protected. Most people who are concerned about seasickness are pleasantly surprised that its not an issue for them on our trips. However, some of our trips involve making brief passages that can occasionally get rough enough to elicit this unfortunate gastronomic state. We recommend you speak with your doctor or pharmacist regarding appropriate motion sickness medication. In our experience for mild queasiness, the acupressure wrist bands, ginger tea or crystallized ginger (which we have on board), and staying above decks can be of great help. The good news is that after we’ve finished a rough passage, the seasickness disappears!

Are children welcome on your charters?

Absolutely! We love having children on board. It can be a hugely educational experience for them. There are many activities to keep them occupied, and enough new and exiting experiences to keep them talking about their trip for a long time. We do, however, prefer that if your child is younger that 10 that the guest list is filled by your party alone.

What is a “crewed” charter?

It’s a cruise that includes a captain and crew/chef who take care of all shipboard duties including safe navigation, local knowledge of choice attractions, and meals and cleaning. You can do as much or as little as you like. We are at your service!

Do I need to be in good shape?

No. The level of activity varies depending on the trip. However, anyone who can get in and out of the dingy and go for short walks will do fine. We have had mobility-impaired guests having wonderful cruises with us without ever leaving the boat! There are many beautiful things to see right from the cabin and deck!

What do your trips include?

All onboard meals, including select wines with most dinners. On some trips you will cover one dinner ashore. Your heated cabin includes a bed made with sheets, pillows, comforters, and blankets. Towels, cloths, shampoo, and soap are also complimentary. You are welcome to use the inflatable, kayak, and all fishing, crabbing, and shrimping gear. If you prefer to overnight at a place with moorage fees, you are responsible for them, as well as any fishing licenses, and most off boat tours.

How often do we get off the boat?

Rainforest we typically take the dinghy up a pristine river and go for a short walk, or explore a remote beach, or abandoned native village. In the San Juans and Gulf Islands many forest trails, beaches, and country roads await the happy wanderer.

What can I expect to learn?

Opportunities for education abound. Your skipper is a trained naturalist, and enjoys pointing out a special plant, and its traditional uses, or identifying an animal and explaining its habits. Local history and native culture are other subjects you'll learn about. The captain also enjoys teaching sailing to anyone interested. Our trips in the Great Bear and the Inside Passage incorporate Native guides who will lead you through abandoned village sites, and enthrall with tales of battles, ancient customs, and the history of the once mighty Kwakwak’wakw. Or take part in a traditional open fire salmon bake and learn of the rich past of the Heiltsuk. The boat makes a great platform for seminars and workshops. We also offer instructor-led cruises in subjects such as meditation, photography, and whale observation. Please see charter options. If you are an instructor interested in leading an art cruise feel free to contact us.

What areas do you charter in?

Our scheduled tours focus in the San Juans April through July, with one trip up the Inside Passage/Southern Great Bear Rainforest in early August, mid August to mid September in the Northern Great Bear Rainforest of the northern B.C. coast, and one trip down the Inside Passage/Southern Great Bear Rainforest in mid September. Please see our schedule. Any time you don’t see a scheduled trip booked the boat is open and available, so don’t hesitate to inquire.

What if I'm a solo traveler who prefers my own stateroom?

All of our rooms are double occupancy (View ship schematic), and allow for a maximum of six guests. If you prefer a private stateroom we will try to accommodate you. There will be an additional 50% fee if the tour is otherwise full.

Can you take more than six passengers?

By Coast Guard regulation, we can take up to six guests. On our instructional cruises, and with workshops and seminars, we can bring an instructor in addition to the six guests.

Do I need to know how to sail?

No. The captain and crew are perfectly capable of taking care of all sailing. However, you are welcome to participate at any time for your own enjoyment. The captain is a lifetime sailor, and would love to help you with your sailing skills. By the end of the trip you may just be ready for the America’s Cup!

How to Book a Charter with San Juan Yachting

Chartering with us is as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Select your boat and dates. Select the powerboat or sailboat you desire and the dates you prefer. Our standard charter week is Saturday (open Saturdays March - October), 9AM through Friday noon (during the summer season it is unlikely we could accommodate an off-standard week request because charters will be scheduled "back to back"). Call us Monday through Saturday 9AM to 5PM PST, 360-671-4300 , or e-mail to confirm the dates are available and reserve your charter. You are also welcome to check availability and place a 48-hour "first right of refusal" hold on your chosen boat/dates on our website. You may link to an availability calendar for each boat from it's listing page or click here to view an availability calendar for the entire fleet.

Submit a resumé: If this your first charter with San Juan Yachting, please complete either the Cruising Resumé (if you are chartering a power boat) or the Sailing Resumé (if you are chartering a sailboat).

Sign and return Charter Agreement and General Terms and Conditions page. Our staff will e-mail your charter agreement and general terms and conditions documents. Review the charter agreement for the correct contact information, towels, linens, preboard and safety briefing time before sending a signed copy back to us. If you have chosen to send your reservation deposit (30% of charter rate) in by check, and if you have not already sent the check, you should include it with your signed documents.

Getting Ready. Along with your charter documents we will also e-mail you a Skippers Handbook to help with your charter planning. It includes detailed arrival day information, travel tips, and checkout and preparation tips. Upon request, we can also send you a sample packing list and a sample menu (complete with shopping list) to make your planning easier. In order to get to know your boat and speed your checkout, please read the "Notes From The Owner" for your boat (found on this website at the top of your boat's specification page).

Safety Briefing & Local Orientation. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, and in recognition of social distancing recommendations, we have changed our Safety Briefing and Local Orientation procedures. We will send you a virtual Safety Briefing & Orientation video and worksheet 10-days prior to your departure date. Watch the safety briefing and local orientation video any time in the 10 days before your charter and return the completed worksheet San Juan Yachting to fulfill the safety briefing requirement. (Your crew is welcome to watch the video as well!)

On arrival. When we e-mail you the link for the safety briefing we will also provide your assigned onboard checkout time. Please plan to arrive 60-90 minutes before your onboard checkout time. This will allow you the needed hour onboard your boat to complete your self-orientation checklists before your checkout skipper arrives. Your checkout skipper will then answer questions, point out nuances, and make sure you are comfortable with your understanding of your vessel's systems. After that you are free to load your gear onboard and settle in. For more details please visit our Arrival Day page or refer to the Skippers Handbook.

And if you are planning to go into Canadian waters , there is a #6 . Click here for information. Note regarding winter charters (between the end of Fall Season and the beginning of Early Spring Season): Winter cruising (at Fall Season rates) is not recommended due to high winds (50+ knots) and wind waves (8+ feet), often unpredicted, that occur in our area. However, charters may be available (minimum of 5 days) to those with significant experience and an established charter history with San Juan Sailing, upon approval by both the owner of the boat and the owners of San Juan Sailing. Please also note that most boats are undergoing extensive preventive maintenance during the winter so the selection of vessels is limited.

With New Ship, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection Changes Course: Photos

(Bloomberg) -- When Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection finally unveiled its 298-passenger Evrima in 2022 after a few years of high-water drama involving construction delays at a Spanish shipyard, it blazed a trail as the first hotel-branded superyacht. Two years later, the brand is established as a posh option for cruise skeptics: 50% of its guests are first-time cruisers and 20% have already booked repeat trips. By those metrics, the yacht line is a success.

But that doesn’t mean it’s been smooth sailing. When Ritz-Carlton officially debuts its second yacht, the 448-passenger, $600 million Ilma, on Sept. 2, it will represent a pivot for the brand.

It wasn’t totally intentional. First there was the shipyard drama, which necessitated a switch to a more experienced boat builder called Chantiers de l’Atlantique in St. Nazaire, France. Then there was a move to a hybrid liquid natural gas system, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions and allows Ilma to switch to sustainable fuels in the future—but requires a larger ship to be built. And last came a leadership shuffle for the nascent company—which licenses its name from Marriott International and is run as a separate entity—that brought in a new chief executive officer, Jim Murren, formerly of MGM Resorts International.

As a result, the 790-foot Ilma is a substantially larger ship than the intentionally intimate, 628-foot Evrima. And the stakes are substantially higher, too. Murren says he hopes this second vessel will cement Ritz-Carlton’s leadership of the ultra-luxury cruise market as its hotel brand rivals—Four Seasons, Orient Express and Aman—prepare to sail in with their own ships in 2026 and 2027.

All that upcoming competition adds urgency to Murren’s plans: He aims to add three more ships to Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, broaden the concept to other Marriott luxury hotel brands and go public.

The company recently accessed public markets for the first time and raised $300 million in a senior secured bond issue, which Murren describes as “oversubscribed.” [IS IT?]He says that’s enough to wrap financing for Ilma and a sister ship, Luminara, due next July, and still have some funds left. Talks with shareholders about ships No. 4 and No. 5, also set to be built in France, start in the fall.

But for now, all eyes are trained on Ilma, which reflects many tweaks made in response to results of Evrima guest surveys and offers more space per passenger than any other ship in the world. It commands rates of $2,600 per cabin per night—an enviable fare even in luxury cruising. This market, Murren says, has an estimated potential of more than $5 billion per year and is barely tapped. With only 50,000 suites a year to fill on two ships, he says the Collection doesn’t “have nearly enough suites to sell.”

What it does have is plenty of Champagne: The Collection expects to pour 6,000 bottles of complimentary Moët & Chandon a month on its two ships combined.

Here’s a first look at what to expect from the Collection’s latest ship—all good indicators of what to expect in the company’s future.

A Stellar Pool Deck

The yacht’s name means “water” in Maltese, and the Malta-flagged Ilma is designed to max out views and water experiences—something guests on the smaller Evrima said they wanted more of.

The most significant addition is a main pool set above the top deck. Surrounded by daybeds, it replicates the above-the-world experience of a rooftop pool at a swank hotel—and the number of loungers around it was determined by studies conducted on Evrima so guests won’t have to fight for a prime spot.

As for the expected crowd: Like Evrima’s passengers, the ship likely will draw high-net-worth North American travelers, especially Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program members, ready to show off their designer swimwear. Some will come with their progeny, attracted by a Ritz-Kids program, but most will be adults, average age 53, and no matter their age, many are retired. Based on the Evrima experience, they’ll be looking to let loose and have a good time at sea.

Bells and Whistles at Sea Level

A favorite spot on the earlier ship is the Marina, a cocktail lounge whose tiered terrace has a bottom section that can be lowered to sea level and hover over the water. When the yacht is at anchor, guests can jump off the back for a swim or launch paddleboards and other equipment.

Ilma’s Marina will be larger and have an even more striking entrance to the sea, thanks to a floating platform created out of inflatable and rigid pieces by superyacht toy company AquaBanas. Think a floating catwalk that leads out to a netted swimming area with floating chairs. (Some even have a canopy above them.) It takes the overwater hammock trend to a whole new level.

Multiplying the Suites

The two oversize “owner suites,” the top category on Evrima, were oversubscribed, so Ilma has eight. While all suites have a private outdoor terrace, these $80,000-per-week accommodations have outdoor living areas with whirlpool, shower, couches, loungers and dining space. Indoors, there’s Calcutta marble on the bar, emerald marble on the dining table and bespoke sofas by French designer Ligne Roset.

Concierge Suites are another new suite category, all four topping 1,000 square feet of combined indoor and outdoor space. All suites come with king-size beds, double-sink bathrooms and personalized concierge service. As on the Evrima, there are practically as many crew members as guests.

More Space for Wellness

Guest feedback also led to the decision for a bigger Ritz-Carlton Spa on Ilma, with 11 treatment rooms compared to Evrima’s five and some of those are equipped for outdoor massages. A 12-part, six-foot-long David Hockney swimming scene lithograph greets guests at the entrance, and dim lighting sets the mood for treatments such as a stretching-massage combo called the Ultimate Bamboo Experience ($420), which according to its description in the spa’s brochure, “is perfect for slowing busy minds.” Products throughout are from 111SKIN and ESPA. The spa also has a cycling studio.

Michelin-Quality Meals

The open-air, pan-Latin Beach House restaurant on Deck 5 is among five dining options. Done by Toronto-based Chapi Chapo Design, it’s likely to be the buzziest, since it has its own infinity splash pool. Evenings here may begin with sunset cocktails, live Latin music and ceviche. The menu is by James Beard Award-winning California chef Michael Mina. Over at Seta su Ilma, the ship’s most intimate restaurant, the 11-course modern Italian tasting menu ($350 with wine pairings) comes courtesy of another Beard winner, Washington, DC-based Fabio Trabocchi.

Doubling Down on Nightlife

Even though Ilma is a larger ship, its designers took care to stay away from anything deemed overly cruise-shippy and maintained a few spaces that will be recognizable from Evrima. One of them is the Living Room, a meeting spot for both day and night inspired by a high-ceilinged hotel lobby bar. But  the designers have added an oval-shape dance floor where a DJ can spin tunes late into the night. The other nightclub spot is Mediterranean-inspired Mistral—the restaurant’s outdoor terrace will take on a sultry vibe once the last courses are served.

Expect high-end art throughout. An art history major in college, Murren helped choose the pieces to adorn the public spaces, including an original Andy Warhol sea turtle silkscreen above a banquette in the Living Room.

New Itineraries and Destinations

Like Evrima, Ilma will leave the Mediterranean for the Caribbean for the winter season and head back in the spring. In July, Ilma will sail around Northern Europe and the Baltic region—a first for the company—with varying itineraries that are set to include Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Riga, Latvia.

While most of Ritz-Carlton’s cruises are seven nights long, the company is also ramping up five-night sailings for busy executives who can’t take a whole week off. This coming Caribbean season, it’s additionally testing three- and four-night voyages from Fort Lauderdale and San Juan, in hopes of engaging even more new-to-cruise guests. On those trips and other Caribbean sailings, ultra-luxe excursions will include helicoptering from Antigua to Barbuda for a master sushi class at Nobu ($2,900 per person) or sunset sailing with a private chef from Bonaire ($1,250 per person).

Up next for the line will be the 452-passenger Luminara, which after a few inaugural months in the Mediterranean will begin exploring the Asia-Pacific region in December 2025—another common request from the passenger surveys.

As for Ilma, shakedown cruises, as rehearsal-style family and friends trips are called, are happening this month, and the first paying guests will come onboard on Sept. 2, for a seven-night jaunt from Monte Carlo to Rome.
