Choose demon, mortal, or ghost in Fire Emblem: Three Houses?

Find out whether you should choose demon, mortal, or ghost Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Josh Hawkins

If you’ve ever played a Fire Emblem game, then chances are you already know how important the choices you are often poised can be. In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, players must choose whether to answer if they are a ghost, demon, or a mortal when talking with Sothis, one of the game’s primary characters. But what exactly do these choices do, and which one should you pick? Here’s what you need to know.

Choose demon, mortal, or ghost in Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Players will find themselves poised with the question of what they are during one of their early conversations with the mysterious green-haired girl, Sothis. Sothis is a vital part of the narrative in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and the information that she gives you is often necessary to your progression through the game. Because of the importance that this character has in the story, many have been curious to figure out how their answer affects the rest of the story.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - are you a demon, mortal, or a ghost?

Unfortunately, the real solution is a bit underwhelming. Instead of it offering some kind of massive effect or change, choosing any answer other than mortal will only hit you with a nice scalding from Sothis about how silly you are to think otherwise. Because of this, the only real choice that you can make here is mortal.

After you’re asked this question, you’ll also be asked to set your character’s birthday. This is important because throughout the game, you’ll be instructing your students in various lessons each day. When your birthday rolls around, the leader of your House will reward you with a gift for celebrating another year of life. These gifts offer a nice bit of a stat boosts, which can be useful to get early on in the game. Aside from this, the answers to the questions that Sothis asks you do not appear to have much weight on the actual story. Not in this instance at least.

Now that you know whether to choose demon, mortal, or ghost, be sure to head back over to our Fire Emblem: Three Houses guide hub for even more assistance. You’ll also want to make sure you know how to change costumes and make your main character look more unique.

Devil's Fee blood circle puzzle - Baldur's Gate 3

Josh Hawkins posted a new article, Choose demon, mortal, or ghost in Fire Emblem: Three Houses?

Hello, Meet Lola

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - Ghost, Demon or Mortal and Birthday Sothis questions explained

In the opening of Fire Emblem: Three Houses , you'll be posed a bunch of questions very quickly. Long-time series fans know simple questions can sometimes have big repercussions - but what about these opening questions in Three Houses? A choice between  ghost, demon, or mortal  is sure to make any player suspicious - and birthdays have a history of having an impact in this series. So. Allow us to explain.

The latest entry in Nintendo's beloved strategy RPG series sticks with tradition in that it poses you a bunch of questions that can change your story often - so much so that we've put together a definitive Fire Emblem Three Houses choice and consequence guide. One set of questions players get particularly hung up on is the opening, however - so we're here to clear that up.

You see, Fire Emblem games often have some significant tweaks hidden behind the opening choices. A choice between normal or hard and casual or classic modes is one thing, but an story dialogue choices could cause a story change later on or a stat boost might be tied to it, and there's a few of these in the opening courtesy of Sothis.

As such, some players want to know what they're choosing. With that noted, let's break down the conversation with Sothis from the game's opening...

fire_emblem_three_houses_ghost_demon_mortal_birthday.png

Ghost, Demon or Mortal? What to say to Sothis in Fire Emblem Three Houses

At the very start of Fire Emblem Three Houses you'll find yourself in a dark void with  Sothis , a mysterious green-haired girl who wants to pepper you with questions. Series veterans will know questions like this can sometimes have an impact on the game - so it's no surprise the choice has some heading straight to the internet.

Very early on in your conversation, Sothis asks the following: "I have not seen the likes of you before. Who are you, anyway?"  You can answer the following ways:

  • I'm a ghost.
  • I'm a demon.
  • I'm mortal.

Unsurprisingly, fans want to know what they're getting themselves into with this choice. Well, the answer is rather boring: nothing. Your choice between ghost, demon, or mortal has no effect . In fact, Sothis simply scalds you if you choose anything but mortal.

So this is one choice that isn't like other games and doesn't have a big effect. One choice in the early game setup does have a small impact, however: your birthday.

fire_emblem_three_houses_birthday_birthdays_byleth.png

Fire Emblem Three Houses Birthday: what the protagonist and Sothis' birthday does

Once you've chosen your form, a choice between the male or female designs of protagonist  Byleth, you'll also be asked to set a birthday . In some Fire Emblem games this impacts stats - so in one game it gives you a passive affinity that has an impact on how certain battle interactions pan out.

In Fire Emblem Three Houses there is a stat reward based on your chosen birthday, but it's based on an accessory .

Basically, when you set your birthday it won't have any immediate effect. But when that birthday rolls around, your house leader (Edelgard, Claude or Dimitri depending on your choice of house) will give you a birthday present - this present will be an item that gives a slight stat boost. Note this present is given automatically as the calendar sifts through days. You do not need to talk to your house leader.

From Dimitri you will get the Blue Lions Brooch, for instance, which grants +2 to your CHA stat.

From Claude, you get the Golden Deer Bracelet, also +2 CHA.

From Edelgard, you get the Black Eagle Pendant, also +2 CHA

Basically: your birthday isn't nearly as important this time around, but players wishing to min/max the game may wish to set their birthday earlier rather than later so they can get their hands on the gift quickly.

Oh, and in case you're wondering  Sothis' Birthday  will always be the same as yours. Or at least, she'll say it is. That has no effect on anything either.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses - Ghost, Demon, Or Mortal?

Fire Emblem: Three Houses offers you a series of choices before you begin, including Sothis asking you if you are a mortal, demon, or a ghost.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses offers you a series of choices before you begin the game. In past Fire Emblem games these have had an impact on the rest of your adventure, so it’s understandable that players will want to know what they're getting into. Here’s a breakdown of those first few questions and the consequences of your decisions.

Decisions To Make In Fire Emblem Games

The first choice is between male and female skins for protagonist Byleth. The second is setting a birthday. Finally you will be asked if you are a ghost, demon or mortal? Here’s how your answers will effect your game.

RELATED: Fire Emblem Three Houses: Who Has The Best Timeskip Glow-Up

In some Fire Emblem games your birthday will have an effect on your stats. This time around it doesn’t have such an obvious impact, but there are advantages to setting the date as close as possible. This is because when your birthday rolls around in game you will get a gift from your house leader.

The house leaders (Edelgard, Claude or Dimitri depending on your chosen house) will give you a token piece of jewellery which adds +2 to your CHA stat. While the stat boost is small, in the early game small boosts have more impact, making it worthwhile to fiddle your dates to gain the advantage quicker. The gift will be given automatically once the day comes around and there’s no need to speak directly to your house leader.

Sothis Asks A Strange Question

The other early question which feels like it should have a huge impact comes from Sothis, who coincidentally will always share your birthday, or at least that's what she tells you.

Early in your conversation Sothis asks, “I have not seen the likes of you before. Who are you anyway?” You are then given a choice of “I’m a ghost,” “I’m a demon” or “I’m a mortal.”

While this seems like a choice which will affect the game, it is in fact the opposite. Your choice between the three options has absolutely no effect at all. None whatsoever. The only difference is that if you choose either of the options that aren’t mortal, Sothis will scold you for answering incorrectly.

Since she already appears to know the answer it seems strange that she asks the question at all, unless what she really wants to know is “are you a liar?”

Regardless of Sothis' intentions, this time around you can make your early game choices without having to consider any wider consequences . Your biggest choice will be your house, something which requires much more thought.

Ghost, Demon or Mortal in Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Wondering if the choice between Ghost, Demon or Mortal is important in Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Fret not, we've got you covered.

Normal or Hard, Classic or Casual in Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Want to know whether you should pick Normal or Hard, Classic or Casual in Fire Emblem: Three Houses? Here are the differences between each setting!

Right at the start of Fire Emblem: Three Houses you’ll be introduced to Sothis, a mysterious, young and eternally sleepy character who spends her time in a foreboding chair. One of the first things she’ll as you is what you are, prompting a choice of Ghost, Demon or Mortal. If, like us, you’re paralyzed at the thought of having to make a decision, you might be wondering if this selection has some far-reaching consequences in the game. Will it determine your class? Your story? Your relationship with Sothis? Don’t worry, the choice of Ghost, Demon or Mortal in Fire Emblem: Three Houses won’t affect any of these things.

Ghost Demon or Mortal in Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Your choice of Ghost, Demon or Mortal won’t affect anything in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. If you pick Ghost or Demon, Sothis will simply ask you to stop messing around. The only option that continues the game immediately is Mortal, at which point you’ll have the chance to choose your name. In short, it isn't really a choice at all.

Given the number of people fretting over this choice, perhaps the game developers didn’t quite expect how many people would get stuck over this small early decision! In truth, it’s probably there just to help you get used to making decisions about your character and their outlook on things. You’re going to need to choose a lot of dialogue options in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, so get used to being comfortable making up your own mind! It won’t be long before you need to choose between the Black Eagles, Blue Lions or Golden Deer , and while you should absolutely pick the Golden Deer because they’re the coolest house , every student in the game is worth a look.

Once you’re past choosing between Ghost, Demon or Mortal and are into the game proper, you’ll be ready to learn the basics of professorship, which of course means mastering how to fast travel and reclass ! We have plenty of other Fire Emblem: Three Houses guides available, including lists of all Personal Skills and Budding Talents for the students.

Fire Emblem Three Houses: Should You Choose Ghost, Demon, or Mortal?

3 houses ghost demon mortal

After a long wait and a couple of delays, Fire Emblem Three Houses has finally launched on the Nintendo Switch. The game comes with an excellent story, along with some choices you’ll have to make along the way. If you’re wondering whether you should choose ghost, demon, or mortal in Fire Emblem Three Houses , here’s what you need to know.

Ghost, Demon, or Mortal in Fire Emblem Three Houses

This is the first decision presented to you in the game, and… it literally doesn’t matter at all.

If you pick the ghost or demon options, Sothis just tells you to cut the bullshit and stop lying, and you’ll have to make the choice again. This means that you’re basically railroaded into choosing the mortal option.

When you pick the right option, Sothis will then make a comment about how she’s not familiar with your kind, and the story will continue as per normal. You’ll get to pick your character’s gender, name, and date of birth.

As far as we can tell, this decision doesn’t have any sort of impact on the game or the story at all, nor does it have any far-reaching consequences that turn up later on. Since you’re forced into making only one correct choice, there’s no way to alter the outcome of this decision, so there’s no need to worry about it.

When you do reach an important point in the story where you’re forced to make a crucial decision, however, rest assured that the game will definitely let you know. Everything else is pretty much inconsequential.

That’s all you need to know about choosing the ghost, demon, or mortal options in Fire Emblem Three Houses . Be sure to check our Fire Emblem Three Houses guide wiki for more tips and information on the game.

Fire Emblem Three Houses Ghost Demon Mortal: Everything You Need to Know

By andrew lin | jul 26, 2019.

3 houses ghost demon mortal

Fire Emblem Three Houses Ghost Demon Mortal is a choice you'll encounter right when you make your character. Longtime Fire Emblem players know what happens when the game asks you cryptic questions, but new players will be suspicious as to what the choice entails. Here's everything you need to know.

The short answer is that your choice doesn't matter. When you start the game, Sothis, the green haired girl, will ask you questions like your birthday and your desired form. She will ask you if you are a Ghost, Demon, or a Mortal. Picking anything but Mortal will have her tell you to stop messing around, and you'll be forced to pick Mortal.

Fire Emblem Three Houses Ghost Demon Mortal

While it technically unknown if the choice has some sort of hidden effect later in the game, we can look at other Fire Emblem games for answers. Recently, in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fates, the game asked you questions throughout the story, but the choices didn't actually matter.

Far more important is your choice of house, which will affect the story dramatically (kind of the point of the game). For that, go with your gut, and for maximum replayability, go through all three.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses Guide: Ghost, Demon Or Mortal And Your Birthday

“I’m a ghost. I’m a demon. I’m a mortal.’ After watching the opening cutscene to Fire Emblem: Three Houses, you will meet a mysterious green-haired girl called Sothis within your dreams.

Rudely interrupting her “moment of repose,” she will ask who you are. Your three options are a ghost, demon, or mortal, and, understandably, many have been left wondering whether a choice so early on in the turn-based tactical role-playing game has any lasting impact. Well, it doesn’t.

If you select ghost or demon, Sothis will see through your lies – warning you not to attempt to deceive her, as well as asking that you keep your wit in line.

The only choice that doesn’t aggravate her is answering that you are a mortal, to which she responds: “I see. Then you must have a name of sorts. Go on.”

Fire Emblem: Three Houses Birthday Choice

After telling Sothis your name, she will remark that she’ll never grow accustomed to the sound of human names before moving on to ask you when your birthday is.

“Beneath which moon and on what day were you born to this world?” she will ask, to which, again, your response will make no immediate difference.

However, as the months roll by and it comes up on the calendar, your chosen house leader will present you with a stat-boosting item. Therefore, if you want to receive that gift as soon as possible, we’d suggest making sure that Byleth’s birthday is in Month 5 (Harpstring Moon).

It’s worth mentioning that, whatever your choice, Sothis will always reveal that you share the same day of birth.
