APPARITIONS (2021) Reviews and overview of Aussie horror

‘Some families leave legacies. Others leave bodies’ Apparitions is a 2021 Australian horror film about a young woman that returns to her family home to investigate the slaughter of her family.
Written, produced and directed by Perri Cummings and Paul Anthony Nelson ( Trench ).
The Cinema Viscera production stars Cate O’Connor, Stefan Dennis, Perri Cummings and Shanon Kulupach.
Plot: University graduate Lily Stone (Cate O’Connor) is haunted by the fact that she was the only survivor of a family slaughter that she witnessed as a young girl. returns to her family home to find out what happened to her dead parents.

Despite the locals’ warnings about an evil presence cursing the house, she returns to her family home to discover more about her past. Having Lily failed to contact her best friend Alice (Shanon Kulupach), the latter goads cop Jane Wilkes (Perri Cummings) into investigating. Deadly secrets are revealed…

Reviews: “In its savvy combination of ghost story and slasher subgenres, Apparitions ’ playful twists and turns provide ample popcorn thrills that make this a sure-fire essential for those with a taste for low-budget indie horror. While not exactly redefining the horror genre in any kind of radical way, in its defense Apparitions shows no real interest in doing so […] Apparitions is a lot of fun…” Alliance of Women Film Journalists
“Combining psychological horror with a couple of other styles of fright fare that I don’t want to spoil here […] a well-crafted shocker […] Stirringly directed, well-paced, and offering some startling surprises, Apparitions offers plenty for horror cinema fans to enjoy.” Horror Fuel
“Apart from the sudden, last-minute introduction of the hulking Martin (Wayne Tunks, Fragmentary, The Casting Game) which seems a bit too convenient and the second act scenes Alice and Jane going on a bit too long and slowing things down, Apparitions mostly works. It doesn’t break any new ground, but it should keep viewers entertained.” Voices from the Balcony
Release: Apparitions premiered as part of Monster Fest which runs from December 2nd to12th 2021 in Melbourne, Australia.
In the UK and USA, 4Digital Media will release Apparitions in 2022 on DVD and On-Demand.

APPARITIONS – Review by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
That there is not a specific funding stream available through Screen Australia or the country’s other government-associated film bodies to give a cash bonus to any feature film featuring Neighbours alumni is frankly beyond me. The long-running, beloved Australian soap that gave the world Kylie Minogue and Guy Pearce has a special place in the national consciousness (and in other countries in particular where it was a hit, such as the United Kingdom), so much so that the appearance of any actor from the series’ heyday sparks for many of us a moment of recognition so poignant that it takes a moment to remind ourselves that this is not in fact someone we actually know.
It is in this spirit that when Stefan Dennis pops up in Perri Cummings and Paul Anthony Nelson’s Apparitions – which recently had its world premiere at Melbourne’s Monsterfest – the sense of ghosts of the past making themselves visible in the present was first experienced. Renowned for his decades-long role in Neighbours as Paul Robinson, so familiar a face is Dennis to a large swathe of the country that he needs no introduction. So when Dennis first appears as a friendly publican with a secret in the small town where the bulk of Apparitions action is set around, it feels in many ways like we are making a similar return to a half-forgotten past as that of the film’s protagonist Lily (Cate O’Connor).
Lily has just graduated from university, but unlike her peers she has no family to help her celebrate, with only the enigmatic no-nonsense cop Jane (Cummings) there to represent what is soon revealed to be Lily’s very troubled past. The only survivor of a gruesome massacre that saw her family killed in an isolated rural home when she was a little girl, Lily was shunted between foster homes growing up where a string of misfortunes followed her into adulthood. Prompted by an unexpected reminder of her past to dig deeper into the childhood she has struggled to repress, Lily returns to home, despite the urging of Dennis’s barkeeper Tom and his partner not to do so. As long-buried secrets start to make sense to Lily, Jane races against the clock to figure out the mysteries at the heart of the film that have plagued Lily for so long.
As the title of the film indicates, visions that may or may not be real dominate Lily’s journey. In its savvy combination of ghost story and slasher subgenres, Apparitions ’ playful twists and turns provide ample popcorn thrills that make this a sure-fire essential for those with a taste for low-budget indie horror. While not exactly redefining the horror genre in any kind of radical way, in its defense Apparitions shows no real interest in doing so. Rather, what it offers instead are simply some really great characters, co-director Cummings’ turn as Jane a particular stand out. With her motorbike, aviator glasses, leather jacket and fabulously unperturbed brand of Australianness, Jane alone deserves her own spin-off TV series at the very least, driving around the countryside with Lily’s plucky best friend Alice (Shanon Kulupach) solving crimes both supernatural and more earthly in nature. Apparitions is a lot of fun, another solid reminder that despite the horrorphobia of major funding bodies in the country, the genre in Australia is alive and well.

Apparitions
Combining psychological horror with a couple of other styles of fright fare that I don’t want to spoil here, Apparitions (Australia, 2021) is a well-crafted shocker from the cowriting/codirecting team of Perri Cummings and Paul Anthony Nelson featuring admirable performances and a good amount of intrigue. Lily Stone (Cate O’Connor) has just graduated from university but what should be a high point in her life so far is overshadowed by the fact that she was the only survivor of a family slaughter that she witnessed as a young girl (as revealed very early on in the film). She returns home to what locals consider a haunted house to find out more about her past. Lily fails to contact her best friend Alice (Shanon Kulupach), who goads serious-minded cop Jane Wilkes (Cummings) into taking her along to find out what is wrong. Deadly mayhem ensues as long-buried secrets are uncovered. Cummings and Nelson run protagonist Lily through the wringer both physically and emotionally, and O’Connor delivers in a fine showing. Cummings and Kulupach also give standout performances, aided by a sizable supporting cast that includes Stefan Dennis and Wayne Tunks. Stirringly directed, well-paced, and offering some startling surprises, Apparitions offers plenty for horror cinema fans to enjoy.
Crow Valley
Independent Australian thriller Crow Valley (2021) finds a man named Benny Jones (writer/director Josh Conn) on a mountain bike trip in the titular stretch of land hit by a car driven by a hiker named Greta (Nicole Freeman). Greta takes him to a remote cabin, where the pair must wait for two days before someone can come help the badly injured cyclist. Both of the characters harbor dark secrets, and Conn keeps viewers on tenterhooks as we try to figure out the story’s mysteries one puzzle piece at a time. Conn ratchets up the suspense tantalizingly, increasing tension as the backstories of the cyclist and Greta are slowly — and chillingly — unveiled. The two leads have stirring chemistry together, and both inhabit their characters with gusto. Supporting cast members Tina Rettke, Peter Murrihy, Jessica Leaming, and Isabella Tognon all turn in solid work in some roles that could spoil things if called out here. Crow Valley is the sort of thriller that works best when viewers go in as cold as possible. It’s well shot and directed, with impressive production values. Be sure to keep your eyes glued to the screen for the final shot.
The Crow Valley trailer is at https://vimeo.com/505066461 .

Writer/director/star Martin Copping combines hand-wringing suspense and a hard look at substance abuse in his taut thriller The Dunes (Australia, 2021). Nicholas Rice (Copping) returns to his old Australian hometown The Dunes after losing his job as a reporter in Los Angeles, where he lives with his partner and their child. While there to visit his aging father, tie up loose ends with the family rental property, and try to get himself sober, he encounters a stranger named William Night (Tim Phillipps) who keeps hanging around a little longer than he should and popping by at unusual times. With memories of his past popping up to haunt him and the temptation of ex-girlfriend Beccy (Marsha Vassilevskaia) lingering, Nicholas already has more than enough to deal with, when more trouble comes calling in a very deadly manner. Copping helms The Dunes with an interesting approach, as the film starts off with a slow-burn pace but has a constant air of things eerily not being right in Nicholas’ world — a persistent sense of dread that keeps the proceedings on edge. The cast is top-notch, including Copping portraying Nicholas as a flawed man who remains sympathetic and Phillips investing William with an enigmatic quality.

Down-and-dirty Aussie horror for those who wish the halcyon days of Ozploitation had never ended. Which should be all of you.

6.4/10 Great story Good ending Liked it a lot

Review by samantha ★★½
A very earnest Australian thriller that makes good use of it's modest budget and fresh cast. I could tell the actors were committed to the story and it was refreshing to see; a lot of indie horror feels defeated by the lack of commitment to the roles. It was a fun idea and I'd love for the directors to get more funding for future projects, they could make some great stuff!

Review by Ian A. Chapman ★★★★
Knowing nothing regarding the content of Apparitions before the screening, I throughly enjoyed going along for the ride. Firstly I clicked with the natural characters and the frequent undertones of humour; this allowed easy acceptance of the characters and intreated enough when something untoward transpired. The pacing allowed time to explore one’s own thoughts about the direction and tone; the slower moments all fleshed out characters and enriched the world. I approved of the choices made with the pub-based characters and the interesting plot directions that branched off from that. The effects looked rad and the world felt real; the few scenes bleeding from the past to present worked. I did find the audio mix somewhat forced as the what appeared neatly on screen needed not the audio cue.

First Viewing (Jan. 10th, 2022): Apparitions feels like the spiritual sister to Malignant . It's slow burn film that comes with rich performances, stunning character development and twists among the way.
Appears on List(s): 2022 RANKED
Second Viewing (March 12th, 2022): Apparitions is structured a good deal like last year's Malignant . It's stunning and unexpected third act completely changes the trajectory of the entire film in the best way possible. It equally shakes up what we've come to expect as normal when it comes to ghost films. Proving that it doesn't have to be a literal haunting to be coming but rather making it ghosts of the past and how characters are dealing with. Intertwining character development and a haunting make for a really compelling film. Resulting in Apparitions standing out within the supernatural horror genre.

Review by Glenn Charlie Dunks ★★★
Did anybody see Donna Macrae's LOST GULLY ROAD? This reminded me a bit of that. Makes good use of a micro-budget, particularly the score which hums and drones as well as bigger productions. Particularly liked Cate O'Connor and, in a small role, Kristina Benton.

Review by Dustin Baker ★★½
Has several compelling notions and setups to it, including a nice flashback to a slumber party, but falters under its own inertness. A bulk of the film consists of not much more than stiff conversations delivered as lifeless as possible, killing a lot of goodwill the opening and ending bookends create. The ending isn't as clever or as surprising as it seems to think it is either, leading to a whole film's worth of buildup for something you pretty much surmised ten minutes in.

Review by Jim ★★★
Apparitions, (not to be confused with Apparition) opens with scenes of domestic tranquillity turned into a houseful of dead bodies by someone, or something unseen. The only survivor is a young girl. We soon find out that what we were seeing is the now-grown Lily (Cate O’Connor) having a flashback before her college graduation.
That explains why the only ones she has there for her at the ceremony are her best friend Alice (Shanon Kulupach, Spin Out) and Jane Wilkes (Perri Cummings, Trench, Shotgun) a cop who worked on the case. After finding out her boyfriend didn’t make it because he was with another woman she goes home to find a letter from a lawyer concerning her old home. So…

Review by Simon Tolhurst ★★★★
An impressive thriller/slasher hybrid as a young woman finds herself looking into her past and discovering a few surprises. Great supporting cast and solid dialogue makes this work.

Review by Steven Millan ★★★
This literally sharp edged and blood drenched Australian psychological thriller has a young woman(Cate O'Connor[SCOPE]) who returns to her parents' home, where a handful of tragedies and a literal massacre at an all-teen-girls slumber party have occurred as it leaves her wondering whether she or someone else in her life is the real knife wielding culprit.
The directing/writing/producing duo of (the film's editor) Paul Anthony Nelson(TRENCH,INTERFERENCE) and (the film's co-star) Perri Cummings(who's best known as an actress in films that include TALKBACK and WHY MUST THE SHOW GO ON ?) fill the film with plenty of intriguing mystery, fluid helming, strong performances from the cast, and a handful of gory murders that enable APPARITIONS to be a well structured Aussie horror feature. With Shanon Kulupach(THE ASSOCIATION),Stefan Dennis(THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE,50 KISSES),and Wayne Tunks(FRAGMENTARY,OVERCATERERS ANONYMOUS).
