However, things get complicated when she struggles to possess her most recent mark, a young man played by Christopher Abbott. Emmy nominee Sarah Paulson stars in the 2020 psychological thriller Run . The film revolves around Chloe, a young woman who has spent her life controlled by her overbearing mother. However, as Chloe enters adolescence, she begins questioning her life and her mother’s role in it. Powered by Paulson’s committed performance, and with a smart and pleasantly surprising screenplay, Run is an effective and suspenseful thriller that will keep audiences on the edge.

Fresh (2022)

Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones star in the horror thriller Fresh . The film follows Noa, a young woman frustrated with dating apps, who begins a relationship with the charming Steve. The plot centers on a couple living on a secluded Icelandic farm whose sheep births a human/sheep hybrid. Becoming parents to the creature, the couple begins to adjust to their new lives, oblivious that a mysterious entity is watching their moves with mysterious purposes. Lamb is unnerving yet engrossing, benefitting from an excellent performance by Rapace. Fans of unique premises and unconventional horror will get the best out of this odd and chilling film.

Midsommar (2019)

Ari Aster followed the success of Hereditary with Midsommar . Starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, and Will Poulter, the film follows a couple and their friends who travel to Sweden to experience a secluded town’s famous midsummer festival. However, they soon realize they are taking part in something more dangerous, as it becomes clear the town is a dangerous pagan cult. Balancing weighty themes with old-fashioned scares and an impossibly discomforting vibe, Midsommar is a showcase for Pugh’s considerable talents and further confirmation that Aster is a horror auteur like few others. 

Barbarian (2022)

Utterly bonkers and thrilling, Barbarian is a true horror event. The film stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long and follows a woman whose Airbnb rental is double booked. Deciding to spend the night in the house despite the unexpected presence, she soon discovers the rental has dangerous secrets lurking beneath. A wild ride from beginning to end, Barbarian goes all in on its brand of deranged scares, providing an admittedly unconventional yet ultimately sharp and satisfying experience that’s as scary as it’s entertaining. 

X (2022) new

Ti West presented his daring, gritty take on the slasher genre with X . The film stars Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow, and Martin Henderson and tells the story of a group of pornographers who decide to shoot their latest film on a secluded Texas farm owned by an elderly couple. Their plans take an unexpected turn when an unexpected enemy begins targeting them one by one. Elevated by a committed and versatile dual performance from Goth,  X works as a homage to 1970s slasher movies and a worthy entry to the revered genre. 

The Witch (2015)

Starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the role that made her a star, The Witch centers on a young girl whose brother becomes lost under her watch. Accused by her other siblings of witchcraft, the girl must endure her family’s distrust and accusations as a dark entity lurks in the forest beyond their solitary cottage.  The Witch finds Robert Eggers ( The Northman ) in fine form, aided by Taylor-Joy’s commanding performance. Mixing supernatural thrills with an exploration of faith, religion, innocence, and womanhood, The Witch is a superior and thought-provoking entry into the elevated horror subgenre. 

Pooka! (2018) new

Hulu’s Into the Dark series has served as a powerful forum for established and up-and-coming genre directors to showcase new and exciting horror films, and while we’ve already covered Treehouse (directed by James Roday), we’d also like to shine some morbid light on director Nacho Vigalondo’s contribution to the anthology. It’s a film called Pooka! that stars Nyasha Hatendi as a man named Wilson who takes an acting job as a costumed creature named Pooka, a beast based on a popular new holiday toy that’s selling like crazy. But as the toy’s popularity reaches new heights, Wilson begins experiencing wild hallucinations with murderous conclusions. A fitting genre feast for the Christmas season, Vigalondo clearly had a ton of fun with his off-the-wall concept, and so will you.

The Changeling

A haunted house tale from the ‘80s, The Changeling doesn’t feel like it’s from the ‘80s. Sure, there is no high definition or modern A-list cast, but the film’s suspense transcends the decades and remains one of the spookiest specter films ever made. It’s about a composer who hunkers down in a sprawling rental to grieve the sudden loss of his wife and daughter. And—you guessed it—he’s not alone.

A Tale of Two Sisters

Not even a viewing in broad daylight can save you from the terror the film’s helmer, Jee-woon Kim, has in store. About a pair of siblings who are tormented by a long-haired shadow figure, A Tale of Two Sisters is a chilling Korean folk tale with tonal shifts and jumps scares so jarring you may just rethink the dark corners of your household. Should you prefer the American version, The Uninvited , starring Emily Brown and Arielle Kebbel, is based on the Korean original.

Under the Shadow

Under the Shadow is a brilliant film that came and went in 2016 with hardly a whisper. A critical and festival hit, British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari’s supernatural thriller arms itself with traditional genre scares but also a social subtext that depicts war-torn Tehran in the 1980s. Narges Rashidi stars as Shideh, a mother dodging evil from all directions: missiles, enforcers, and a possibly malevolent spirit.

The Devil’s Backbone

You’ve probably seen The Shape of Water . And you may have heard of Pan’s Labyrinth . But before monster maestro Guillermo del Toro’s elevated fantasies grabbed the attention of the Academy Awards, he wrote and directed an incredible, mournful Spanish-language ghost tale set during the Spanish Civil War. At its backbone: a dead little boy named Santi who wanders a war-torn orphanage.

Candyman is a terrifying movie wrapped up in the United States's own gruesome history. Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) is researching urban legends, and there's none more potent than the serial killer Candyman, whose origin story has roots in slavery and racial injustice. Tony Todd plays an unforgettable villain who is set on repeating that which was done to him. Catch up on the original before watching Nia DaCosta's Candyman remake, out this year.

The Sixth Sense

Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment explore each other’s psyches in M. Night Shyamalan’s genre-blending film about an eight year old who sees dead people and the sullen child psychologist trying to help him understand why. A permanent fixture in pop culture, the film not only received six Oscar nominations, but it remains as one of the greatest twist-ending films of all time.

The Conjuring

Based on the actual paranormal investigations of real-life ghostbusters Ed and Lorraine Warren , The Conjuring is the first installment in The Conjuring Universe and also marks the introduction to that nefarious pigtailed doll over there. It stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the famed occult inspectors, as they head to a Rhode Island farmhouse to help the Perron family rid their home of evil spirits.

Based on the Japanese horror original, Ringu , filmmaker Gore Verbinski’s psychological nightmare stars Naomi Watts as a reporter investigating a string of teen murders. On the surface, sure, it’s a movie about a videotape that kills those who watch it. In seven days. As we all know. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find it’s a truly unsettling odyssey through all the ways a mother’s love—and hate—can affect a child.

Ouija: Origina of Evil

An origin story to the 2014 film Ouija , Mike Flanagan’s prequel is a sneaky-good movie that stands on its own. Set in late-1960s Los Angeles, Ouija: Origin of Evil spies on a widowed mother (Elizabeth Reaser) who runs a faux séance business with her young daughters, and their latest stunt—conjuring spirits with the help of an occult lettered board—proves to be a B-I-G mistake.

Nicole Kidman carries this period ghost thriller about a family who are haunted by the uninvited on her perfectly postured shoulders. She plays Grace, a manic mother of two who may or may not be going mad. Its narrative can be nicked for being unoriginal, as it definitely borrows thrills from 1961’s The Innocents . But the directors’ atmospheric touches and Kidman’s spiraling performance set this one at the top of the genre heap.

Adapted from a Stephen King short story, 1408 , is an absorbing thriller starring a fantastic John Cusack as a paranormal cynic who makes a living debunking ghost stories and hauntings. His latest gig: proving the Dolphin Hotel is merely a place to rest one’s head and not the infamous hotbed for paranormal activity its reputation says it is. We’re sure you can guess how things work out for our non-believing protagonist.

Looking for a family-friendly ghost movie? Casper was designed for watching after a long trick-or-treating session. As the daughter of a "ghost therapist," someone who communes with spirits for a living, Kathleen 'Kat' Harvey (Christina Ricci) is used to things that go bump in the night. But she'd never had a ghostly friend—before Casper, that is.

The Shining

All work and no play gives Jack Torrance a crazy case of cabin fever. A Stanley Kubrick classic that tops every critic’s best-of horror list, The Shining is the story of one man’s methodical descent into madness as he and his family care for a secluded mountain resort that’s crawling with horrific and wrathful ghosts. If you’re looking to make it a double feature, queue up Room 237 , a conspiracy theorist’s dream documentary that analyzes each dark corner and blood-soaked hallway of the Overlook.

Fans of the Netflix spine-tingler The Haunting of Hill House will understand the kind of mental workout it takes to endure a Mike Flanagan production. They will also know just how rewarding the psychological marathon can be. In Oculus , one of Flanagan’s earlier projects, a sister attempts to clear her brother of murder by proving the crime was done by a phenomenon that comes in evil mirror form. We know, but just go with it; trust us, this effective bare-bones film is one you’ll want to reflect on (sorry).

So Patrick Swayze as the ghost of Sam Wheat isn’t really all that scary. But the way he was killed is. After date night, Sam and girlfriend Molly, played by Demi Moore , brave the New York City streets on foot, only to be met with the short barrel of a mugger’s pistol. It’s a film that cleaned up during the 1991 awards season , winning two Oscars—one of which went to Whoopi Goldberg as Oda Mae Brown, the psychic Sam enlists to help solve his own murder.

The Innocents

There are some pretty creepy things going down in this black-and-white haunted house film based on the Henry James 1898 Gothic ghost novella, The Turning of the Screw . Deborah Kerr takes the lead as Miss Giddens, a governess who slowly begins to believe the country estate where the children live is haunted by a pair of evil spirits: the former valet and the woman he seduced.

Beetlejuice

Tim Burton’s stylized cult classic from 1988 mixes comedy, fantasy, and the afterlife to achieve the perfect gateway film to the horror genre: It’s not too scary, but it still brings the thrills. Michael Keaton stars as the title “bio-exorcist” who’s hired by a ghost couple to remove a family from their home. And you can bet that by the time Halloween creeps into town, we'll have watched this movie more times than it takes to summon its title character.

One disembodied groan and we’re bolting. Which is exactly what the Lambert family should be doing. Alas, Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson who play Mom and Dad stick with their new mortgage while also trying to keep their young comatose son away from the clutches of the evil spirits inhabiting another dimension called The Further. Don’t underestimate the unnerving power of super-scary makeup and a wicked wig, in this film directed by Saw creator James Wan.

What Lies Beneath

Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford play a seemingly happy couple who live in a massive lakeside dream house in Vermont that’s haunted not only by the spirit of a former college student, but also by the sins of their past. An easy watch from the start, Robert Zemeckis’s slow-burning ode to Hitchcock conjures references to several of the master of suspense’s classics including Rear Window , Psycho , and Spellbound .

Tales of grief often lend themselves to the horror genre. You have Hereditary , a contemporary take on possession, as well as The Changeling , Don’t Look Now , and others on this very list. But Lake Mungo , which indeed uses the aftermath of tragedy as its springboard into terror, is different. Executed as a pseudo-documentary, this Australian fright film plays out over interviews with a family who are mourning the death of their 16-year-old daughter while also fearing the presence that has now taken up residence in her room. Um, chills.

Hulu  is packed with fascinating horror titles. Before we get into a list of the absolute best options on the streaming service, let's cover some worthy alternates. 

Hulu is home to Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) and its sequel, Aliens (1986). There's also action flick Shadow in the Cloud (2020), twisty horror thriller Barbarian (2022) and romance-gone-wrong Fresh (2022). Finally, you should check out Haunt (2019), Titane (2021), Crimes of the Future (2022) and experimental horror film Skinamarink (2022).

Possessor (2020)

Brandon Cronenberg (son of horror filmmaker David) wrote and directed this movie about, you guessed it, possession. The dark flick follows an assassin (Andrea Riseborough) who takes control of strangers' bodies to execute targets. When an assignment goes awry, she's knocked out of the pilot's seat. If you like all things sci-fi and horror, dare to watch this one.

The Babadook (2014)

A seemingly made-up monster creeps more and more into the lives of a single mother and her young son in this critically acclaimed movie. The horror escalates after a haunting storybook turns up. The film is written and directed by Jennifer Kent, who also wrote and directed the 2018 thriller The Nightingale.

Infinity Pool (2023)

Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgård star in this disturbing film, also by Brandon Cronenberg, about a vacationing couple that ventures outside their island resort and accidentally commits a crime. You won't be able to take your eyes off scream queen Goth, and Succession fans will enjoy more of the talented Skarsgård.

Piggy (2022)

A teenage girl is viciously bullied at a local pool and then happens upon a stranger abducting her three tormentors. This gripping, Spanish-language movie is based on a short film and stars Laura Galán.

Hatching (2022)

This Finnish creature movie is plucked straight from your feathery nightmares. The flick introduces Tinja, a 12-year-old girl who discovers a strange egg that hatches into a monstrous bird. The horrendous creature contrasts greatly with her family's expectations of perfection. So it's kind of like a cursed version of E.T. Well, maybe not. You can watch and come to your own conclusions.

The excellent Prey sees Amber Midthunder's Naru hunted by a Predator.

Prey (2022)

If you count incredibly capable,  invisible killing machines as scary, you may be watching some of the scenes in Prey through your fingers. This addition to the Predator franchise takes place in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago and centers on a young warrior named Naru. Watch this one for a compelling underdog story about a human determinedly fighting against a powerful alien.

You Are Not My Mother (2021)

You Are Not My Mother introduces Char, a bright teenage girl who's living with her grandmother and mentally ill mother, Angela. Angela disappears, and when she returns, she acts eerily different. It's a creepy, slow-burn mystery you'll want to stick with, anchored by a strong central character.

A dark tale with a cutting, humorous edge, Appendage follows fashion designer Hannah’s ( Hadley Robinson ) growing imposter syndrome, which, after becoming out of control, ends up physically spawning a growth on her body. The growth, also known as the titular appendage, takes over Hannah as it starts to outwardly destroy her life as the imposter syndrome had done her mind. Appendage is angst-ridden and tense but never falls far from its comedic script. The likes of Emily Hampshire , Deborah Rennard , and Brandon Mychal Smith are at full force in a film that, despite what its surface may suggest, delves deep into themes of depression and anxiety and acts as somewhat of an allegory of the mental health crisis that dominates the lives of young people today. - Jake Hodges

The Intruder

The Intruder is a psychological thriller that hits all the right terrifying notes as it creeps towards its explosive finale. Annie and Scott Howard, played by Meagan Good and Michael Ealy , respectively, purchase a house in Napa Valley intriguingly named “Foxglove.” As the film’s namesake suggests, the previous owner of the house, Charlie, played by Dennis Quaid , isn’t quite ready to let go of the property just yet. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Jack Nicholson in The Shining and Christian Bale in American Psycho , Quaid’s performance stands out in the movie as terrifying, with the supporting cast being swept away in his chaotic narrative arc. A commercial success, The Intruder pays homage to horror that has come before it, with David Loughery ’s straight-talking script allowing the film to flow seamlessly between horror set pieces. Gripping and tense, The Intruder stands as a wonderfully atmospheric horror that certainly ticks all of its genre’s boxes. - Jake Hodges

Infinity Pool

Written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg , Infinity Pool is a horrifying deep dive into gore, morality, and hedonism. Infinity Pool follows a married couple, played by Alexander Skarsgård ( Succession ) and Cleopatra Coleman ( Dopesick ), on a relaxing beach vacation that turns unexpectedly vicious after an accident reveals the surreal subculture hiding just beneath the surface at their resort. Co-starring Mia Goth and Jalil Lespert , Infinity Pool swims within the brutal underworld of graphic violence and perversion, resulting in shocking scenes captured eloquently by Cronenberg. I Know What You Did Last Summer

One of the most unforgettable horror films of the late 1990s with one of the worst titles, I Know What You Did Last Summer brought together an undeniably attractive cast of heartthrobs with a simple premise. Jennifer Love Hewitt , Sarah Michelle Gellar , Ryan Phillippe , and Freddie Prinze Jr. star as a group of friends who, after a reckless and fatal accident, are haunted by their actions when a threatening stalker forces them to face consequences. Director Jim Gillespie leans into classic horror tropes with heart-pumping fun and quippy dialogue, ensuring I Know What You Did Last Summer lives on in infamy. – Yael Tygiel

Jagged Mind

Jagged Mind feels like someone took the concept of 50 First Dates and injected it with psychotropics, producing a harrowing horror romance. The film follows Billy ( Maisie Richardson-Sellers ), a cool young twenty-something from Little Haiti in Miami who meets the perfect woman ( Shannon Woodward ). They immediately fall in love, but shortly after, Billy starts suffering from blackouts and twisted visions of death that slowly erode her brain with every occurrence. That’s all we will say, and we recommend not watching the trailer — just go in knowing as little as possible to get the full effect of the thrill ride. – Tauri Miller

Joining the ranks of modern psychological horror films like Men , Midsommar , and Hereditary that explore deep themes through the prism of horror, Clock is a meditation on the pressures women face around reproduction. Written and directed by Alexis Jacknow ( Love Daily ), the story centers around Ella ( Dianna Agron ), a woman in her late thirties who faces constant pressure to have children despite not wanting any. She gets coerced into joining an experimental program meant to “fix her biological clock” that only seems to drive her into madness. The film has a lot to say about its themes and perfectly uses the thriller medium to manifest and physicalize the internal struggles that aging women deal with on a daily basis.

Noa ( Daisy Edgar-Jones ) meets Steve ( Sebastian Stan ) just as she’s sworn off dating. He’s kind, charming, and just what she’s been looking for in a partner. That is, until she discovers his secret side hustle – selling women’s body parts to other cannibals. Noa then has to figure out how to avoid being eaten herself, even if that means playing along with Steve’s continued affection for her. Fresh is a unique take on the perils and horrors of modern dating that artfully balances empowerment and uneasiness. Daisy Edgar-Jones plays the nuances of Noa so well that sometimes it’s hard to tell if she still has feelings for Steve or if she’s just pretending. And Sebastian Stan is somehow able to still make Steve desirable even after revealing his unhinged hobbies. If you’re squeamish, I definitely don’t recommend eating while you watch this movie. Fresh is more unsettling than outright gory, in regard to the cannibalism, but it can still make even the strongest stomach turn a bit. – Brynna Arens

Written and directed by Ben Steiner , Matriarch is a simmering slow-burn thriller that follows a woman ( Jemima Rooper ) who visits her childhood home intending to confront demons after surviving an overdose. With more than meets the eye, Matriarch is a disturbing British horror film intended to bring discomfort to the audience. Co-starring Game of Thrones alum Kate Dickie with Sarah Paul and Franc Ashman , Matriarch is a haunting exploration of addiction and generational trauma through eerie circumstances and frightful imagery sure to make viewers squirm. – Yael Tygiel

Intrigo: Dear Agnes

Gemma Chan stars in Intrigo: Dear Agnes , a gripping sequel to the 2018 film Intrigo: Death of an Author . Directed by Daniel Alfredson , Intrigo: Dear Agnes is a German-Swedish-American film about a young widow named Agnes ( Carla Juri ), who is offered a shocking proposition. Agnes’ wealthy friend (Chan) has a cheating husband ( Jamie Sives ) she’s eager to get rid of, and she wants to hire Agnes to murder him. With a chilling premise for the crime drama, Intrigo: Dear Agnes is a murder mystery with a slow burn and a shocking twist. – Yael Tygiel

Hatching is a richly told horror film by director Hanna Bergholm , who also created the story on which Ilja Rautsi ’s screenplay is based. Hatching follows the desperation of a sweet and fragile 12-year-old gymnast named Tinja ( Siiri Solalinna ) as she fails to satisfy her malcontent, image-obsessed mother ( Sophia Heikkilä ). Swinging between family lifestyle vlogging, gymnastics training, and exploring the woods, Tinja struggles to overcome the burden of her mother’s expectations of perfection. With a story about societal pressures and unrealistic beauty standards, Hatching reveals an insufferable reality twisted by the introduction of a creature with the capability to free Tinja or destroy her. – Yael Tygiel

Writer/director Jason William Lee , who also appears in the movie, presents a horrific premise in Funhouse revolving around a Big Brother - style reality show where contestants are brutally killed off as they’re eliminated. Featuring performances from Valter Skarsgård and Khamisa Wilsher ( Charmed ) and bursting with gore, Funhouse shares similarities to movies like Truth or Dare and the Saw franchise. One night, Shay is pulled into a ritual that Jo and her cabinmates perform every year to summon Lilith. She eventually realizes she strongly disagrees with the retreat’s method and message, and a violent power struggle between the girls and the strict men in charge of the retreat begins. Touching on things of feminism, sexuality, and toxic masculinity, Pure is most terrifying because of its realism and relevance. – Taylor Gates

Bad Hair is an incredibly clever horror satire film from writer/director Justin Simien ( Dear White People ). Set in the late 1980s, Bad Hair explores cultural discrimination through the lens of ironic horror, following the journey of one ambitious woman trying to make her way up in the world of music television. Bad Hair takes advantage of the setting, infusing the movie with recognizable faces like Lena Waithe ( Westworld ), Vanessa Williams ( Ugly Betty ), and James Van Der Beek , as well as peppering in celebrity musicians like Kelly Rowland and Usher . – Yael Tygiel

Shadow in the Cloud

Shadow in the Cloud is a totally bonkers World War II thriller with a hard genre twist. It’s also one of the best female-centric science fiction horror films in recent memory. Set in 1943, the film follows the young female Flying Officer Maude Garrett ( Chloe Grace Moretz ). Maude brings an enigmatic package on to a B-17 bomber, but the sexist crew trap her in the lower gunning deck. Maude is soon forced to deal with even greater problems; an alien monster attaches itself to the plane. Want to see Moretz kick the crap out of monsters and obnoxious dude bros? The Lodge may look like a standard haunted house scarefest, but its commentary on paranoia and trauma are much deeper than surface level jump scares. Riley Keough gives one of the best performances of her career as Grace Marshall, the lone survivor of a religious extremist cult. An ultimately sweet story about family and identity that also wears the skin of body horror, Julia Ducournau ’s Titane is a true one-of-a-kind experience that deserves to be experienced with as little information as possible. What can be said is that it centers on Agathe Rousselle ’s Alexia, a woman who was seriously injured in a car accident as a child and now has a titanium plate in her head. Following an intimate experience with a car and a series of brutal killings, she begins to form a bond with a man while posing as his son. If this all sounds quite strange, it is actually even more so and that is also what makes it so glorious. It is a wholly original vision with all the cast completely committing to bringing Ducournau’s world to life. If you’ve seen her previous film, the also outstanding Raw , then you may have some idea of what you’re getting into even as it goes in its own incredibly unique direction. It is silly, graphic, dark, and eventually loving in a way that no other film out there can hold a candle to. – Chase Hutchinson

Most horror fans would not consider the hero of a horror film to be the one who edits and censors the films for the ratings board. Yet, this one does, and does a brilliant job. Enid ( Niamh Algar ) is a quiet, no-nonsense film censor, haunted by the tragic disappearance of her sister when they were children, playing in the woods. She has never quite recovered from that, and looks for her sister everywhere. She thinks she sees her sister in one particularly gruesome horror film, and goes seeking other works by the director. This leads her down a rabbit hole of "video nasties" and sets her on a dangerous path. Censor is set in the 1980s, but it isn't flashy about it: no big 1980s hair, no bright 1980s clothing, no 1980s synth pop. It is subtle, mostly in its use of the video nasties, videotape, and lack of internet or cell phones. A haunting, engaging film. - Alyse Wax

Curiously, Hulu isn't famous for their horror catalog, but they've grown after their relationship with Disney was born. They've managed to include modern horror as part of that section, but they have a long way to go with including classics on their platform. However, we dug around the bin and found these solid picks of classic horror films you can watch today on Hulu.

Let your night start off with Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror masterpiece Alien . There's no better to do it than to join the Nostromo crew as they respond to a distress call generated from a mysterious planet and become the prey of an otherworldly organism that will stop at nothing before feasting on all of them. It features Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, a fantastic lead that would serve as the blueprint for female heroes in cinema. Watch with the lights off and the volume all the way up.

Of course, you must indulge in a double bill with Aliens , the direct sequel to Alien directed by James Cameron. Ripley is back after being woken up by her employers at the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Her story doesn't add up, at least that's what they say. Because of this, she agrees to go back with an army of Marines.

Of course, the creature is there to feast again and Ripley takes it upon herself to fight the xenomorphs again. Which one is better? It depends on your personal taste, but we like to think these two are best if seen together in a double-feature show.

Day of the Dead

Written and directed by zombie mastermind George A. Romero, Day of the Dead closes his original trilogy with more social commentary than ever. The film gives force to his argument that spawned the genre . This time, survivors are locked up in an underground bunker and they must come up with a way to survive both inside and out. Critics and audiences didn't exactly love it, so Romero hung up his coat and rested for 20 years when he decided to make another film about zombies.

The Exorcist III

The real follow-up to horror's most important film is a very underrated horror thriller. The Exorcist III pretends Exorcist II: The Heretic doesn't exist, and brings us again to Georgetown where Lieutenant Kinderman investigates a series of crimes similar to the ones committed by someone who's dead.

Exactly how this connects to the franchise is for you to discover. Trust us when we say it's worth checking out, and more so if you're into jump scares. This one has the best jump scare in cinema history, and we'll die on that hill.

Shaun of the Dead

Easily one of the best zombie films ever made, and definitely the less traditional one on that list. Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead is a great horror comedy that tells the story of Shaun and his best friend Ed, as they navigate through a zombie-infested London. They're joined by Shaun's girlfriend, his mother Barbara, and others as well. This makes the film a great funny piece that somehow makes the horror more tolerable for detractors. The film's very dynamic in pace and goes by in a flash.

Interview with the Vampire

Neil Jordan's adaptation of the Anne Rice novel is a solid vampire film featuring two huge actors in their prime participating in horror. It doesn't get any better than that. Interview with the Vampire is the story of a Louis, a vampire who has decided to share his story with a reporter.

In 1791, Louis was transformed into a vampire by Lestat, which begins the chronicle of a weird and obsessive relationship between the two. Starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rea, Christian Slater and Kirsten Dunst, it's hard to find a better ensemble cast in horror than this one.

Written by a then-unknown J.J. Abrams and Clay Tarver, Joy Ride is a 2001 horror thriller that scared the hell out of everyone in a matter of minutes. It tells the story of two brothers on a road trip who just mess with the wrong person: They prank a truck driver by pretending to be a girl and telling him to go to a motel, so they can meet.

When Rusty Nail arrives, the brothers hear him and laugh from the next room. Unfortunately, the man in the other room suffers the rampage of a sociopath whose monstrosity the stupid dudes woke up. After that, the film becomes a frantic cat-and-mouse game you'll never forget. The words "candy cane" would never mean the same again after Joy Ride .

Yes, Se7en is horror, regardless of what people say. It's a horrific journey through the mind of a sick individual who was always dominant over everyone. There aren't winners or losers in David Fincher's film. There's only the grim and dark reality of a world in which men like John Doe are able to commit horrendous acts of murder. This is one of those films most of us wish we could see for the first time again. The twist, the shot, the "sloth" corpse waking up.

The Vigil (2019)

Amulet (2020)

Harry Potter alum Imelda Staunton goes to the nunnery in Amulet  as Sister Claire, a London nurse who helps a refugee and ex-soldier named Tomaz (Alec Secareanu) find lodging after the building where he's staying catches fire. Sister Claire brings Tomaz to live with Magda (Carla Juri), a young woman caring for her sickly mother. But, the longer Tomaz lives with them, the more he realizes their family secret is more hellish than the war he survived. Written and directed by Romola Garai , Amulet embraces some of the trope-ier elements of the genre, but executes them in a way that feels congruent with Garai's penchant for lingering shots and aesthetic world-building. Possessor (2020)

In Possessor , Andrea Riseborough plays Tasya Vos, an assassin who kills by possessing innocent people's bodies and controlling their minds. Tasya struggles to separate her home life from her work life, and when her handler ( Jennifer Jason Leigh ) assigns her a high-profile hit, Tasya loses control of the host body ( Christopher Abbott ) she has possessed to complete the assignment. A sci-fi thriller with some thematic similarities to Apple TV+'s Severance , Possessor was directed by Brandon Cronenberg (son of body horror legend David ). The director told EW the idea for the script came to him during his publicity tour for his last film, Antiviral (2012). He said he felt the effects of performing for the media day after day and "I was finding it hard to see myself in my own life. I was getting up in the morning and feeling like I was sitting up into someone else's life." — A.W.

From Searching director Aneesh Chaganty , Run follows doting mother Diane Sherman ( Sarah Paulson ), who has maintained meticulous control over the life of her daughter Chloe (newcomer Kiera Allen) for 17 years. Once the time comes for Chloe — a wheelchair user with multiple ailments — to leave for college, she soon becomes a prisoner in her own home as dark secrets are uncovered. Run is a taut thriller that feels like an elevated Lifetime movie in all the right ways. Chaganty sets the action primarily in the Sherman house, creating an environment that feels both intimate and suffocating. In preparation for the role, Paulson told EW that she channeled Piper Laurie 's eerie matriarch in Carrie , saying, "There's an element of control, there's obviously an extreme codependent situation at work there, where you have a young person who is slowly coming into their own and what that causes the parent to feel." — A.W.

Censor (2021)

In the 2021 film Censor , even the British Board of Film Classification can't bleep out the terrors that lurk within. This British psychological horror stars Niamh Algar as Enid Baynes, a censor working in 1985 to clamp down on rampant violence within film. But Enid has her own violent past to deal with, namely her sister Nina who has been missing since the girls were little. Enid believes Nina is still alive, and sets out to find her, but struggles to determine the difference between her real life and the movies. Released during Sundance 2021 , Censor is a well-reviewed addition to the British horror movie canon with admirable style (the film was primarily shot on 35mm film, interspersed with some Super8 and VHS footage). Titane (2021)

One of EW's best horror films of 2021 , Titane, by writer-director Julia Ducournau ( Raw ), follows Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), a serial killer and car show model whose fetish for motor vehicles leads to her pregnancy by a Cadillac sedan (yes, you read that right). After a particularly gruesome killing spree, the soon-to-be mother goes into hiding and assumes a new identity, willing to do anything to survive. Sex with a car, motor oil lactation, and murder by hairpin are just a few things the first 30 minutes has in store. This Palme d'Or winner could have easily been a less-aware exercise in camp, but instead develops into a suspenseful meditation on gender, empathy, and grief. The neon-soaked body horror of Titane is a wild, unpredictable ride that will leave your mouth hanging open throughout its hour and 48 minutes of mayhem.

Fresh (2022)

A nuanced examination of the horrors of modern dating, first-time feature-length director Mimi Cave's Fresh follows the meet-cute turned meat-cute between budding lovers Noa ( Daisy Edgar-Jones ) and Steve ( Sebastian Stan ). When Steve turns out to be more Hannibal Lecter than Prince Charming, their relationship takes an unappetizing turn. A dash of American Psycho , a sprinkling of Blood Diner , with a pinch of When Harry Met Sally for flavor, this horror comedy is held together by the killer chemistry between its two leads. Edgar-Jones imbues Noa with a final girl's quiet strength and sharp intellect, making you hope she'll survive the main course. On the flip side, Stan brings Steve's psychopathy just the right amount of disarming goofiness to keep him from being a one-note villain (as seen in his audition video where he dances with a kitchen knife). One suggestion: You may want to eat before you hit play. — A.W.

Hulu is one of the world’s leading streaming platforms. Like all platforms, Hulu’s collection of thousands of TV shows and movies rotates from month to month. With that in mind, this list is maintained to always guide you to the best horror movies Hulu has to offer.

In 2019, Hulu began streaming its own original movies, starting with the horror comedy Little Monsters (2019). Since then, Hulu has shown a strong dedication to horror and thriller. Additionally, Hulu worked with Blumhouse between 2018 and 2021 to produce 24 television movies under the collective title of Into the Dark . The first section of this article lists the best ten of these Hulu-exclusive films.

Hulu also licenses movies from other providers. The second section in this article collects the best licensed films. The list is updated regularly to ensure each movie is still available to watch.

Top Ten Hulu Original Horror Movies

Flesh & blood (2018).

Flesh & Blood is a tense thriller about a teenage girl, Kimberly (Diana Silver), who becomes increasingly scared of her own father. Kimberly’s mother (Meredith Salinger) was murdered, and since then Kimberly has developed a severe case of agoraphobia. Kimberly has trouble leaving her house, even when she becomes suspicious that her father, Henry (Dermot Mulroney), may be involved in a series of local murders. The mystery of Flesh & Blood is built well and provides great tension for the movie’s big finale.

Pooka! (2018)

Released just in time for Christmas 2018, Pooka! is about Wilson Clowes (Nyasha Hatendi), an unemployed actor who finds a holiday job working as a mascot for the year’s hottest toy, Pooka. Pooka is a weird , animal-like doll that repeats words spoken to it in a nice voice or a naughty voice. Wilson’s job is to don a Pooka suit and help create excitement for the creepy toy, but the nice/naughty duality of the Pooka costume is beginning to cause Wilson to think about doing some very horrible things.

Little Monsters (2019)

Lupita Nyong’o stars in the horror comedy Little Monsters as a kindergarten teacher trying to keep a group of children safe from a horde of zombies. The majority of the movie takes place on a farm where Miss Caroline’s (Nyong’o) class is taking a field trip, a farm which just so happens to be next to a US Army training facility where testing on the undead is taking place. Little Monsters is a fun zombie comedy with good gore, plenty of music, and a lot of heart.

Down (2019)

As the Valentine’s Day 2019 episode of the Into the Dark series, Down tells a story of creepy obsession and a fight for survival. Jennifer (Natalie Martinez) is headed home after working late the night before Valentine’s Day, but she gets stuck in an elevator in her office building. Stuck with her is Guy (Matt Lauria), a seemingly nice guy who works on another floor of the building. With everyone else gone for the weekend and no help coming, Jennifer and Guy are forced to make the best of the situation. Something isn’t as it seems though, and the inconvenience of being stuck in an elevator becomes a life-altering ordeal for both of the elevator’s occupants.

Good Boy (2020)

Inspired by Pet Appreciation Week, Good Boy is possibly the cutest installment of Hulu’s Into the Dark series. The great Judy Greer plays Maggie, a journalist struggling mightily with her professional and personal lives. At the suggestion of her boss Don (Steve Guttenberg), Maggie adopts a dog as an emotional support animal. Maggie adopts Reuben, and her life starts to turn around. Not coincidentally, people who are mean to Maggie start winding up dead after Reuben enters her life.

Sarah Paulson leads the gripping psychological thriller Run as a mother who has some serious trouble letting go. Seventeen-year-old Chloe (Kiera Allen) is confined to a wheelchair and has been homeschooled her whole life, but she is now at the age when she’s looking forward to moving away to college. As Chloe awaits an acceptance letter, her mother Diane (Paulson) begins to act even more strange than usual. Chloe feels that something is wrong, and her investigation leads to some harsh truths.

Fresh (2022)

Fresh is a new and, yes, fresh take on cannibal horror movies. Noa is fed up with dating, but when she meets Steve in a random encounter in a supermarket, his charm wins her over. Noa and Steve begin a relationship that escalates quickly, but on a their first trip out of town together, Noa finds out too late that Steve isn’t who he says he is. Fresh is dark and charming in equal amounts, and it is one of the best horror movies of 2022 .

Prey (2022)

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg ( 10 Cloverfield Lane , 2016), Prey is the fifth installment of the long-running Predator series. Set hundreds of years before any other film in the franchise, the movie is about a young, female Comanche healer, Naru, who wishes to prove herself as a warrior. When a Predator arrives from space, Naru becomes her people’s best hope for defeating the alien hunter.

Hellraiser (2022)

Filled with creepy new Cenobite designs and some grand cosmic-horror visuals, director David Bruckner’s Hellraiser is a good modern version of Clive Barker’s original idea. The movie stars Odessa A’zion as Riley McKendry, a recovering drug addict who comes into possession of a strange and beautiful puzzle box. Riley is then thrust into a terrifying struggle not just for her own soul, but for the souls of her friends and family as the mysteries of the puzzle box reveal themselves.

Clock (2023)

Ella (Dianna Agron) is a happy, successful woman who doesn’t want to have children. But pressure from most of the people in her life causes Ella to wonder if there is something wrong with her for not wanting kids. Giving in to the expectations of others, Ella undergoes an experimental treatment to “fix” her biological clock, but the extreme methods lead to a host of psychological horrors for Ella.

No One Will Save You (2023)

Kaitlyn Dever stars in No One Will Save You as Brynn, a lonely woman with a past that still affects her in the present. Living in an isolated house on the edge of town, Brynn keeps to herself until the silence of her way of life is upended by an encounter with an alien being. No One Will Save You is an incredibly tense and emotional thriller that might leave some people scratching their head, but will leave many with a lot to think about.

Alien (1979) is an all-time classic and a must-watch for every horror fan. You can now watch the original movies as well as two of its sequels on Hulu.

The Exorcist III (1990)

Set fifteen years after the original movie, The Exorcist III follows Lt. Kinderman (George C. Scott) as he investigates a series of killings tied to the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif), a murderer who was executed years earlier. The killer may be in possession of one of Kinderman’s old friends, Damien Karras (Jason Miller), one of the priests who took part in the possession of Regan MacNeil and who is currently incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital.

Leprechaun (1993)

The campy classic horror comedy Leprechaun is now on Hulu. When a horrifying leprechaun has his gold taken by a boy and a child-like man, the diminutive monster goes on one of the wackiest murder sprees ever put on film.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

I Know What You Did Last Summer was one of the biggest teen slashers to come out of the wave of teen horror in the late 1990s that happened after the release of Scream (1996). It’s about four friends who cover up what they believe to be a fatal hit-and-run accident, but a year later someone who knows what they did seeks deadly revenge.

Dog Soldiers (2002)

Dog Soldiers is a fabulous action-horror movie about soldiers performing a training exercise in the Scottish Highlands when they encounter werewolves . It is a straightforward creature feature of the highest quality.

Queen of the Damned (2002)

Aaliyah is mesmerizing as the ancient and powerful vampire Akasha. Though it is sort of a sequel to Interview With the Vampire (1994), the recasting of prominent characters from that movie (including Stuart Townsend as Lestat) and the nature of the story make Queen of the Damned a film that works perfectly as a standalone. In this movie, Lestat becomes a rock star, and his music awakens Akasha who devises plans of world domination.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

In Shaun of the Dead , a zombie outbreak happens at the worst (or maybe the best) possible time for underachiever Shaun. His girlfriend dumped him, his coworkers don’t respect him, and he doesn’t get along with his stepfather. But now that the dead are walking, Shaun has an opportunity to finally sort his life out.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a hybrid movie made up of a courtroom drama and a possession film. Emily Rose is dead as the movie begins, and the events leading up to her death are shown through the subjective stories of the people testifying in court. Was it possession? Was she mentally ill? Both ideas are explored.

The Last Exorcism (2010)

The Last Exorcism takes a well-worn format and subgenre of horror, found footage and possession, and turns them into something entirely entertaining. Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) is a reverend who has lost his faith. In an effort to expose what he sees as the fraudulent practice of church-sanctioned exorcism, Marcus documents his theatrical tricks during an exorcism performed on a young woman. But this is no ordinary exorcism, and it might cause Marcus to be a God-fearing man once again. The Last Exorcism is one of the best found footage movies of its era.

Evil Dead (2013)

Call it a remake, sequel, re-imagining, or whatever you want, but Evil Dead (2013) might be the best movie in the Evil Dead franchise. It is a grueling cacophony of gore and violence that hearkens back to Sam Raimi’s 1981 original while giving life (and death) to some instantly memorable new characters.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

At first glance, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark might seem like any other supernatural horror movie aimed at younger audiences. However, like the books that inspired it, the movie is much more unnerving than you might expect. Several of the short stories from the books are brought to life in a single narrative about a cursed book found by a group of friends. As stories mysteriously appear in the book, the horrors described on the pages happen in real life, attacking each of the friends one by one. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a pleasantly creepy experience, and it’s great gateway horror for new fans.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

This sequel to The Shining (1980) follows Dan Torrence decades after his traumatizing experiences at the Overlook Hotel. Dan is joined by young Abra Stone, a girl who possess the “shining” like Dan, which makes her a target for a gang of killers who feed on psychic energy.

Possessor (2020)

Possessor is a hitman movie as told through the lens of science fiction and psychological horror. Andrea Riseborough stars as Tasya Vos, an assassin her performs her jobs by transferring her mind into the bodies of unwilling hosts. After completing her missions, she returns to her own body by having her host commit suicide. One day, a hit goes wrong and Tasya finds herself stuck vying for control of a host (played by Christopher Abbot) whose mind won’t be suppressed. Sean Bean and Jennifer Jason Leigh also star in this wonderfully inventive film, the second feature from Brandon Cronenberg.

Underwater (2020)

Reminiscent of the underwater horror movies of the late 1980s and early 1990s, Underwater is a fantastic monster movie set on the ocean floor. Kristen Stewart is Norah Price, a survivor of an ongoing disaster in an underwater mining facility. The structures are collapsing in on themselves, and Norah, along with a small group of fellow survivors, must venture out into the inky blackness of the sea to try to reach the only workable escape pods. Unfortunately for them, something monstrous is lurking in the water.

Censor (2021)

Set in 1985, Censor is a great psychological horror movies set during the “Video Nasty” controversy in the United Kingdom. Enid Baines (Niamh Algar) works for the British Board of Film Classification, and she is one of the most strict censors when it comes to making recommendation for cuts and bans for the violent horror movies she screens every day. One day, Enid thinks she sees her sister in one of the videos she watches for work, but her sister has been missing and declared dead since Enid was young. Enid is prompted to investigate, but did she really see her sister, or is all of the on-screen violence she’s been subjected to beginning to mess with her mind?

Titane (2021)

With body horror, mass murder, psychological horror, and family drama, Titane is a difficult movie to categorize. Regardless of genre, it is an amazing movie that goes to places most people won’t expect. The best way to watch Titane for the first time is to go into with very little knowledge of the movie’s major plot points. Without giving anything away, the movie begins by showing viewers a terrible car accident that causes a young girl to have a titanium plate inserted into her skull. She also seems to love cars. The story then follows the girl, Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), as an adult as she finds her place in life.

Hatching (2022)

This Finnish horror movie is about a young girl, Tinja (Siiri Solalinna), and her struggles to deal with her overbearing, selfish mother. The mother (Sophia Heikkila) tries to create the image of a perfect family for her followers online, but the pressure she puts on her family causes them each to act out in their own ways. When Tinja finds an egg in the woods, she decides to take it home and raise it as her own, even when the creature that emerges turns out to be some sort of mysterious beast. Beautifully shot and littered with metaphors, Hatching is one of the standout horror films from 2022 .

Mailgnant (2021)

Malignant was one of the best surprises in horror during 2021. Director James Wan’s return to horror gave us a movie inspired by monster movie inspired by giallo films , but by way of a wild monster movie. And if you haven’t had the final sections of the movie spoiled for you yet, go into Malignant without reading anything else about it.

Barbarian (2022)

Twisty and phenomenal, Barbarian is one of the best horror films of 2022 . If you haven’t seen it and don’t know anything about it, don’t look anything up. Just go watch it now. If you have seen Barbarian already, go watch it again because it’s just as fun the second time around.

Skinamarink (2022)

With very little in the way of story, Skinamarink should be watch as more of a meditative experience. It is kind of a Rorschach test of a movie. Some people will view its still, lingering shots of emptiness and get nothing out of it. Others will come away unnerved even if they can’t articulate exactly why. More so than many other popular films, what you get out of Skinamarink has a lot to do with what you take into it.

Infinity Pool (2023)

Weird and wonderful, director Brandon Cronenberg’s tale of cloning and debauchery is one of the of most uncomfortable movies of the first half of 2023 . Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgård combine charisma and creepiness to create a story that isn’t easy to succinctly describe, but is worth watching for fans of odd, thought-provoking horror.

The Boogeyman (2023)

A family of three (a father and his two daughters) are reeling from a recent tragedy when their lives are invaded by a supernatural presence. Can they come together as a family in time to stop the boogeyman that is stalking the shadows of their home?

27 I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Released one year after Scream and two months before Scream 2 , Jim Gillespie's I Know What You Did Last Summer even comes equipped with a script from those two films' Kevin Williamson. It's not as strong as the first two Scream films, nor is it as scary or smart, but there's much to love about this late '90s timepiece.

And, with a legacy sequel on the way , the I Know What You Did Last Summer IP isn't done yet. That said, the less remember about the theatrical sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and its ridiculous title, the better.

26 No One Will Save You (2023)

Touted by everyone from Guillermo del Toro to Stephen King , Hulu's No One Will Save You is another win for the streamer's original film department. It's also another win for director Brian Duffield whose 2020 debut, Spontaneous , was also very impressive.

There are just five words of dialogue throughout the entire film, yet the viewer will never have any trouble following what's going on. And, thanks to tremendous work from Kaitlyn Dever (who has been impressive ever since her role on Justified ), the viewer is also able to discern exactly what lead character Brynn is feeling. If Dever doesn't receive an Oscar nomination for No One Will Save You , fans can still expect one or more at some point in her future.

25 The Babadook (2014)

One of the best horror movies directed by women , The Babadook is an intimate, moody, atmospheric modern masterpiece. Some have deemed it an overrated entry in the modern-thinking person's era of horror, but even if just going by the acting and cinematography it's a winner.

There's also much to be said about the titular antagonist. But, like with most effective horror movies and their baddies, don't expect to see much of him.

24 Willy's Wonderland (2021)

One of the better movies from Nicolas Cage's direct-to-streaming era, Willy's Wonderland is the Five Nights at Freddy's movie before 2023's Five Nights at Freddy's . Cage is perfectly stoic as the unnamed main character, but the real star of the show is legendary character actor Beth Grant, who Willy's Wonderland (much to its own benefit) gives a tremendous amount of material.

The plot is basically nonexistent and fans might be disappointed by just how little Cage's character speaks, but there's more good than bad in the movie. The animatronics, for instance, are legitimately creepy, and impressive for such a low-budget film.

23 Alien (1979)

Filled with unforgettable scene after unforgettable scene , Ridley Scott's iconic Alien is a haunted house attraction in space. And, even if no scream can be heard in space, they can be heard on Earth, and unexpecting viewers should expect to do so a few times.

For instance, there's the claustrophobic death of Tom Skerritt's Captain Dallas. But at least he's attacked externally whereas, in the film's most iconic scene, John Hurt's Kane is definitively not. Brilliant, ahead of its time, bloody, well acted, well directed, and bolstered by a perfectly designed but seldom seen antagonist, Ridley Scott's Alien is an all-timer.

22 Werewolves Within (2021)

A wonderfully entertaining comedy mystery film , the well-cast Werewolves Within should check most horror and comedy fans' boxes. Its greatest asset is the leading duo of Milana Vayntrub and Sam Richardson, both of whom are captivating and entirely on the film's wavelength.

Not to mention, at its core, Werewolves Within is a remarkably solid mystery. It stands to reason maybe one in five will be able to guess the werewolf's identity. Factor in the film's occasionally effective scares and always-effective comedy and it's one of the 2020s best genre-blenders thus far.

21 Day of the Dead (1985)

Because it followed the masterful one-two punch of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead , Day of the Dead was practically universally deemed a major disappointment. And, is it as remarkable as those two preceding films? Not quite, but it's incredibly effective and has only improved with age.

The film's underground setting is incredibly claustrophobic, and the tunnels of the base are so well-shot that the viewer always has at least a general sense of where the characters (and the zombies) are. But where the movie shines is in the interactions between the still-living cast members. There aren't many '80s horror films better at the gradual build, and there's no '80s horror film with a better human antagonist than Cpt. Rhodes, brought to life by the late, great Joseph Pilato in one of horror cinema's all-time performances.

20 Evil Dead (2013)

Fede Álvarez's Evil Dead will probably sick out a good portion of the audience, but those with a proclivity for gore will have a blast. As far as the IP is concerned, it's been successfully rebooted three times (an incredible track record for a horror franchise).

The first time was the 2013 film, which toys with the original installment's core concept by adding in a protagonist withdrawing from heroin. That alone is a brilliant way to expand the idea, but the movie's impact is also bolstered by creepy cinematography and an outstanding central performance from Jane Levy, whose Mia truly gives Ash Williams a run for his money as the franchise's best protagonist.

19 Mom and Dad (2018)

Those who passed by Mom and Dad on Redbox thinking it was yet another ultra-low-budget, direct-to-video Nicolas Cage film missed out . But, fortunately, the movie has acquired a bit of a cult following over time...one that needs to expand further.

The narrative follows Selma Blair and Nicolas Cage as two parents who, like the rest of the parents on the planet, now have an insatiable desire to murder their children. It's effectively a new take on the zombie subgenre, but with the infected not all the way dead.

18 The Menu (2022)

For a relatively small film, Searchlight's The Menu made quite a splash both critically and commercially. With a wildly inventive concept and mostly smarmy yet intriguing characters, it's an unpredictably nightmarish dinner.

Ralph Fiennes is terrifying as an exacting chef who accepts nothing short of perfection. Toss in a magnetic lead performance from Anya Taylor-Joy and a great new utilization of Nicholas Hoult and, yes, chef, The Menu is a winner.

17 Skinamarink (2022)

This film has a pretty awesome backstory since it was shot as an experimental film by a YouTuber. Kyle Edward Ball was a Canadian filmmaker who used to make videos based on nightmares that other people described. Shooting this film at his own home in Edmonton, copies of it were leaked, and it soon gained cult popularity on social media. This led to the film securing a theatrical release from IFC Midnight and it being released on Shudder. It has since gained a huge following and is considered to be an amazing directorial debut.

Titled Skinamarink , The film centers on two young children who awake at their home during the night. Not only is their father missing, but strange things begin to happen as windows and other objects in the house start to mysteriously disappear. Despite the film's budgetary constraints, Ball was able to create a brilliantly creepy atmosphere and a great horror film overall. One to catch if you haven't seen it.

16 Annabelle (2014)

If you haven't been following James Wan's terrifying world of The Conjuring universe , where have you been in the last decade? Many of the films from this hugely popular franchise have now become fan-favorites of horror junkies the world over. While there are more installments on the way, one of them in particular birthed a trilogy of films that many consider the scariest of the lot. Annabelle is undoubtedly one of the scariest films to come out of the franchise over the years.

Featuring an inherently creepy doll that acts as a beacon for inhuman spirits, the film is enough to make you never want to see a doll again. Featuring the talented actress, Annabelle Wallis, who ironically shares her name with the infamous entity, her character is relentlessly haunted by it throughout the film. If the whole thing isn't scary enough, a real Annabelle doll exists, though It's currently locked away at the occult museum of the famous demonologist family, the Warrens.

15 The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

With Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox in the lead, The Autopsy of Jane Doe was an atmospheric horror film that packed a lot of punch. The film immerses you in its tense environment as it follows the actors as a father and son duo who run a private mortuary from their home. It's late at night there when a murder victim is brought in. The woman's identity is unknown, and she appears to have no visible cause of death. However, once her autopsy begins, with the men alone with her body as a storm rages outside, it soon becomes apparent that this is no ordinary case.

As they begin to examine the body, signs of unimaginable torture are found internally. Making things worse, some of these injuries appear to be impossible since there's no way she could have suffered them without any visible scarring on the outside of her body. Things soon take a horrific turn. With the men trapped inside, the body begins to unravel its terrifying secrets. If you need any more convincing, consider the fact that this one even made Stephen King's list of favorite horror movies.

14 The Hills Have Eyes (2006)

If gory, slasher-type horror films are your thing, Hulu has you covered too. The Hills Have Eyes features a classic trope as a family on a trip from Cleveland to San Diego winds up on a different route when a gas station attendant suggests they take a road through the hills. Following this route, they soon wind up with a punctured tire and crash somewhere along the New Mexico desert.

The family, which includes an older married couple, their three children, the eldest daughter's husband, their infant child, and two family dogs, all end up stranded there. While the men go look for help, it soon emerges that these hills hold a terrible secret. Hidden among them is a colony of horrifically disfigured inbreeds who create and then prey on situations just like this. The family is soon fighting for their lives as they're ruthlessly hunted, tortured, and killed one by one by their assailants.

13 The Offering (2022)

The Offering was one of the creepiest horror films to come out of 2022. While it faced some stiff competition with the likes of Barbarian and Smile, this film might not have gotten as much attention as those two did but certainly exceeded expectations. Featuring a similar concept to The Autopsy of Jane Doe, this one follows the haunting caused by a body sent to a Jewish funeral house run out of the home of a family from a Hasidic community.

What the family doesn't know is that the person whose body has recently arrived died shortly after performing a ritual that unleashes an evil force. A failed binding spell results in the entity being carried into the funeral home, and it soon begins haunting everyone in it. A great film with plenty of scares, this one has some loose realism to it as it's based on the Jewish folktale of Abyzou.

12 Aliens (1986)

Aliens could easily fit in the action, sci-fi, or horror genres, though there's no arguing the visual scares of this gruesome, epic 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott's Alien . Written and directed by James Cameron, Aliens is a favorite among the ever-evolving franchise, for good reason. While the first film's spin on a haunted house in space was certainly original, the sequel took the time to flesh out its special effects and characters. This included the franchise's leading lady Ripley, played by the incomparable Sigourney Weaver .

Aliens takes place 50-plus years after the original, following Ripley's time drifting alone in space. Picked up by a salvage ship, she warns anyone who will listen about the dangers of alien eggs on LV-426. She embarks with a crew of space marines to investigate a colony on the planet with deadly consequences. Whereas its predecessor was an atmospheric slow-build, this sequel amps up the action, making it one of the franchise's most memorable. Its deep dive into Ripley’s character and overall themes of motherhood and feminism help this creature's feature truly stand out.

11 Prey (2022)

2022’s Prey cemented itself as an instant classic the second it became the highest-watched premiere on Hulu at the time. The film is a continuation of the Predator series, though this iteration looked to the past for inspiration. It took place in 1719 and followed a Comanche tribe in North America. The main hero is a warrior woman in training who struggles to prove her worth to her comrades and herself amidst encroaching colonization… and now alien warfare, of course.

Easily one of the most successful Hulu franchise reboots to date, this film took great pains for the sake of authenticity. This historically accurate film was shot in both English and Comanche to avoid the “Hunt for Red October” effect of a harsh transition in language. The Predator itself got in on the action, sporting a bone-like suit and weapons more fitting of the ‘prey’ of the time. The film also made several references to the originals, from the revamping of direct Arnold lines to the advantageous use of swamp muck.

10 Fresh (2022)

Fresh is a film best taken on an empty stomach. The movie stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Noa, a woman who thinks she finally met a nice guy through online dating, so she decides to go away with him for a weekend escape. Sebastian Stan plays her new love interest, though she soon discovers that he's a man with a discerning taste for the meat of young women.

This film saw the directorial debut of Mimi Cave alongside a stellar script by Lauryn Kahn , who was inspired to create a film for both horror fans and scaredy cats alike. A disturbingly provocative take on modern dating, this movie about cannibalistic horror and violent misogyny has been dubbed one of the best of 2022 .

9 Hellraiser (2022)

While Hulu doesn't have the original film, it does have the remake of Hellraiser , which proved to be a revitalization of the franchise when it premiered in 2022. In it, a woman recovering from drug addiction and struggling to find her place in the world comes across a mysterious puzzle box with the ability to summon Cenobites, humanoids who thrive on the pleasure of pain. In doing so, she unleashes a cataclysmic series of events that will change not just the course of her life, but the lives of those who have chosen to stay by her side.

While the incomparable Clive Barker was not as involved in this 2022 iteration, the changes to the cast, the effects, and the story were much-needed updates . Needless to say, this monkey paw portrayal of tortured characters in an increasingly tortured world is not for the faint of heart, but it's a phenomenal portrait of drug use and obsession.

8 Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)

Spiral: From the Book of Saw is the ninth installment of the Saw series. This popular franchise follows a twisted serial killer and his copycat proteges who test the will of their victims with ‘games’ of increasingly lurid physical and psychological torture. This installment follows police efforts to stop a Jigsaw copycat killer and features Chris Rock, Max Minghella, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Spiral arguably attempted to bring the series back to life in 2021, and was in some ways a success, crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Of course, there is more to come with the franchise with the release of Saw X in 2023, so fans can easily catch up thanks to Hulu's horror offerings.

No Exit (2022)

Havana Rose Liu stars as recovering drug addict Darby in this taut thriller. After escaping rehab in an attempt to visit her mother in the hospital, Darby finds herself trapped at a visitors center with a random group of people during a blizzard. However, when she stumbles across a kidnapped girl in a stranger's vehicle, she must determine who the kidnapper is and try to save the girl. This might be the worst night of her life.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

If you're in the mood for some classic horror, then 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers might fit the bill. Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum star in this film about a San Francisco health inspector who discovers that human beings are getting replaced with alien doppelgängers void of emotion.

Knock Knock (2015)

Keanu Reeves plays family man Evan who's left home alone for the weekend. During a rainstorm, two women turn up at his door (played by Ana de Armas and Lorenza Izzo) looking for directions to a party. Evan lets the women dry off and orders them an Uber, but instead of leaving, they convince him to have a threesome. The weekend descends into all sorts of horror from there.

False Positive (2021)

Ilana Glazer co-wrote and stars in False Positive , a visceral horror movie exploring female trauma and reproductive coercion. Reminiscent of the Netflix documentary Our Father , Glazer plays Lucy, who decides to undergo IVF with a leading fertility doctor (Pierce Brosnan) who uses his own “special” method of fertilization. After falling pregnant with triplets, the trouble begins. The casual way in which women's bodies are manipulated and co-opted in today's society is not lost on this film. Glazer shines.

Fresh (2022)

Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan team up in Fresh , an exploration of modern dating. Noa meets Steve in a supermarket, and is bowled over by his charm (hey, it's Sebastian Stan, after all!). However, Noa soon discovers that her love interest has some seriously scary appetites. If you've ever found online dating mildly terrifying, Fresh is for you.

The Assistant (2019)

The inimitable Julia Garner stars as Jane, a college graduate who lands her dream job working for an entertainment executive. Jane soon realizes that the industry she wants to be a part of is marred by abuse and a slew of men intent on misusing their power. A quietly terrifying movie, The Assistant exposes what it can be like navigating the world as a young woman. Thanks to Garner's performance, it's impossible to look away.

Ready or Not (2019)

In Ready or Not , Samara Weaving stars as Grace, a former foster child marrying into a very big and very rich family. However, anyone who joins the family must draw a card from Le Bail's puzzle box, indicating what game the group will play to mark the occasion. Unfortunately for Grace, she draws the "Hide and Seek" card, and a very real game of life or death ensues. Can she survive until the sun comes up?

In Censor, Enid works as a British film censor in the 1980s, identifying content that should be banned during the “Video Nasty” era. Escape Room (2019)

2019's Escape Room follows a group of strangers as they're forced to take part in a series of deadly escape rooms. Much like Final Destination or Saw , much imagination has gone into each of the deaths, and the escape rooms are genuinely scary. The plot ties into a bigger a mystery, but we're only here for the gore and jump scares, and that's okay.

The Intruder (2019)

A married couple (played by Michael Ealy and Meagan Good ) move into their dream house, which sits on acres of land in the middle of nowhere. There's only one problem with the property: its previous owner, Charlie (played by a seriously creepy Dennis Quaid). If you've ever worried that someone else might be in your house, or that you're being watched during your most intimate moments, then The Intruder is guaranteed to freak you out.

Jessie Buckley stars as Harper, a recently widowed woman who decides to spend some time alone in the countryside healing. You're Next (2013)

Haunt (2019)

If you're a fan of attending haunted houses on Halloween, then 2019's Haunt could put a stop to that. A group of friends are lured to an “extreme” haunted house that promises to scare them silly. What they don't realize is, all of the scares are real. The group faces very real threats from a weird and wonderful cast of characters, whose motive is as shocking as they come.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

George A. Romero inspired an entire generation of zombie fanatics with the Living Dead franchise, and 1968's Night of the Living Dead remains a classic. The film follows a group of people in Pennsylvania who are forced to hide out from flesh-eating strangers. These zombies may move slowly, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous.

Children of the Corn

The "Midsommar" of the Midwest may lack the polish of more prestigious adaptations of Stephen King's work. But when it comes to "creepy kids" in folk horror, "Children of the Corn" deserves its due, and has proven more influential as the years have progressed. The film tells of the arrival of a grim child preacher named Isaac, who arrives in small-town Nebraska with a morbid purpose: to convince the local children to murder every adult in town.

All hell breaks loose as David attempts to rescue his infected (and pregnant) wife and escape the town's vice grip. An eerie and engaging reboot of the little-seen George A. Romero classic, "The Crazies" is a fine slice of 2010s survivalism.

Most of the time when you watch a movie, you  really  don't want the dog to die. "Cujo" is the exception. Featuring an all-time performance from Dee Wallace, "Cujo" is arguably one of the best cinematic adaptations of King's work: a genuinely terrifying perversion of "man's best friend."

A Field in England

Fire in the Sky

Alien abductions rarely feel truly terrifying on film. So it's no small feat that "Fire in the Sky" succeeds where so many others have failed. Based on the infamous Travis Walton incident, the film focuses on the human impact of an extraterrestrial abduction that took place in the fall of 1975, radically affecting the lives of the loggers who watched their friend get beamed right before their eyes. While the film does straddle a tonal line between absolute nightmare fuel and TV movie levels of sincerity, a stellar cast and exquisite work from both cinematographer Bill Pope and the effects geniuses over at Industrial Light and Magic make this a much-watch for anyone who wished abduction films were riddled with PTSD and body horror.

Friday the 13th

A bona fide slasher classic that every self-respecting horror fan owes it to themselves to watch, "Friday the 13th" is a trashy and genuinely scary pillar of the genre (that also features one of the best jump scares of all time).

Graveyard Shift

A feature-length adaptation of a Stephen King short story, the film follows a drifter who takes a job at a small-town cotton mill with a big, goopy secret. Featuring a wild-eyed performance by character actor Brad Dourif, insanely gorgeous art direction, and genuinely impressive creature design, "Graveyard Shift" will make you sick in the best way possible.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II

Picking right up where the original "Hellraiser" left off, "Hellbound" finds our tenacious final girl Kirsty has been committed to a mental hospital. But rather than dismissing her claims of a masochistic dimension of pain-loving demons, Doctor Channard jumps at the opportunity to realize his life-long dream and open a doorway to Hell.

Meet it on its own schlocky terms, and you'll be greeted with a wildly entertaining film that figures karmic justice as a goopy grizzly reclaiming the woods as his own, one sleeping-baggedd camper at a time.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

Resident Evil

"The Vigil" has us passing one spine-tingling night with Yakov, a spiritually (and financially) compromised former Hasid. Willy's Wonderland

A quiet man minding his own business finds himself stranded in a remote down after his car is damaged. A truly wild, campy B-movie that commits hard to its bananas premise, "WolfCop" is drive-in fare worth howling about.

It's clear that a Bigfoot might be a fictional creation, but the haunting attack that guides Holthouse's investigation might play mind games with the audience. Whether the creature exists or not, the anticipation of an unexplainable beast in the woods is enough to arouse a sense of dread and mystery among anyone.

Unacknowledged (2017): 7

It's no secret that the American government might have access to several UFO-related secrets. Organizations like The Disclosure Project seek to make these secrets available in the public domain. As its title suggests, Unacknowledged attempts to interpret such secrets. The sources for the filmmakers include top-secret witnesses and experts who have previously been a part of covert CIA operations.

What's notable about the tall claims of Unacknowledged is not just a focus on state-sponsored UFO operations but even a so-called 'criminal coup' within such investigative operations.

The Curse Of Oak Island (2014-): 7

Off the shore of  Nova Scotia lies Oak Island, a destination that has attracted treasure hunting operations since the 18th century. The Curse of Oak Island presents the modern scenario with a two-brother team seeking lost artifacts on the Island. Not only is this search based on historical facts, but also myths like that of the Knights Templar and their attempts to revive a Phoenician goddess.

While the Canadian show's 8 season run delved into a lot of real-world affairs, legends such as these add to the so-called 'curse' of the titular island.

Often times when newly-single parents start dating again, their children can be terrible to their potential new suitors. This is especially true if they all go on a trip together. Unfortunately, this lodge isn't a well-made ski resort, but an in-the-boonies shack that's basically a death trap. The Lodge thrives thanks to its well-framed visuals, as well as a story where you're often unsure who is the villain and who is in the right. The Ring (2002)

The concept behind You're Next is a simple one. The bolt was fired by one of a series of masked individuals, and we quickly find that Erin (who is dating one of the other Davisons) may be one of the few folks here who can survive all of this nonsense . The Grudge (2004)

Bram Stoker's Dracula

The story traces Dracula (Gary Oldman) back to his roots as Vlad The Impaler, who renounced god because a priest told him his wife Elisabeta's soul was to be stuck in hell for all eternity. Then, it jumps forward to the late 19th century when a solicitor named Jonathan (Reeves) takes on Drac as a client, and even goes to Transylvania to meet him. There, he makes the mistake of letting Dracula see a photo of his fiancée Mina (Ryder) — who the count thinks is a reincarnated version of his wife. — Henry T. Casey

Stephen King's IT (1990)

Stephen King’s It is a product of its time, for both good and ill. It stands out, though, thanks to its stellar cast, particularly Tim Curry as the delightfully evil clown Pennywise. For those who haven’t read the book, It is about a group of friends in suburban Maine (where else?) who defeat a murderous clown demon as children, then have to reunite as adults to end the horror for good. The Host (2006)

Let The Right One In (2008)

The film takes place in a suburb of Stockholm, where 12-year-old Oskar finds himself bullied and friendless. That changes when Oksar meets Eli: a mysterious girl who comes out only at night. Naturally, Eli is a vampire, which puts a damper on the tweens’ budding relationship — but as it turns out, that’s not the only traumatic secret from Eli’s past. Event Horizon

Critically panned upon release, Event Horizon has undergone a deserved reevaluation in recent years and earned its place in the horror pantheon as a cult favorite. The film follows a group of astronauts searching a seemingly abandoned ship to discover what happened to the crew, and it’s this central mystery that keeps the film ticking along. Event Horizon airs on the side of brevity, with a runtime barely more than 90-minutes, but plenty of scares are packed into its relatively short length. Proceedings go completely off the rails in the final third, building to an ending that is deliciously unnerving and sure to stick with you — Rory Mellon

‘Totally Killer’ Starts streaming: Oct. 6

The offbeat horror-comedy “Totally Killer” is a 1980s-style slasher film with a science-fiction twist. Kiernan Shipka stars as Jamie, a rebellious teenager who has lived her whole life in a small town that was the site of an infamous string of unsolved murders in 1987. When the masked killer — or perhaps a copycat — reappears and slays Jamie’s mother, Pam (Julie Bowen), Jamie travels back in time to 1987 to stop the original spree. While trying to figure out the identity of a knife-wielding maniac, the heroine handles the culture-clash of being a 2020s high school kid stranded in a clique-dominated, politically incorrect era.

Based on a Bonnie Garmus novel, this mini-series stars Brie Larson as Elizabeth Zott, a talented chemist who struggles to be taken seriously in the sexist 1950s scientific community. When her brazen defiance of her lab’s rules — coupled with an unwillingness to be subservient and girlie — gets her fired, Elizabeth reinvents herself as the host of a science-focused TV cooking show. “Lessons in Chemistry” covers a decade in the heroine’s life, balancing her rise to fame with her early struggles, while also following her brilliant, eccentric colleague and love interest Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman). A combination of “Mad Men” and “Julia” — with a little bit of “Oppenheimer” mixed in — the series is a portrait of smart, independent people bucking the conformity of their times.

‘Loki’ Season 2 Starts streaming: Oct. 5

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has lately been all about the multiverse, with movies and TV series offering alternate versions of the classic Marvel characters living in parallel realities. Season 1 of “Loki” got that ball rolling, with a creative and mind-bending story about the roguish Norse deity running afoul of the timeline watchdogs in the Time Variance Authority. For Season 2, Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki and Owen Wilson is back as the frequently flustered TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius. Because of the proliferation of new multiverses unleashed in the Season 1 finale, many of the show’s characters find themselves subtly altered and stuck in other worlds, necessitating another trip through time, space and dimensions for these unlikely heroes.

R.L. Stine’s perennially popular “Goosebumps” young adult horror novels get a new television adaptation, although unlike the original 1990s anthology TV series, this latest version (available on Hulu and Disney+) features concepts from Stine’s books inserted into a larger serialized story, with a single cast. Justin Long plays Nathan Bratt, the new high school English teacher in a quaint small town, as well as the new owner of a spooky old house that the local teenagers like to use for their parties. Before Mr. Bratt chases the kids away from their annual Halloween bash, five of them encounter haunted objects that change their lives and put the community in danger.

‘Our Flag Means Death’ Season 2 Starts streaming: Oct. 5

The first season of “Our Flag Means Death” arrived without a lot of fanfare. Initially, the show looked to be just a mild-mannered pirate parody, about a ship full of misfit outlaws led by the inept captain Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). But as the season rolled on — and as Stede’s rivalry and romance with the notorious Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) became more central to the plot — the series’ creator David Jenkins began focusing more on piracy as a haven for people who yearn to live outside the mainstream. Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger, with Stede’s crew stranded on a deserted island and Blackbeard determined to get back to being mean. Fans have been eager ever since to learn how these twists will affect one of TV’s sweetest love stories.

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 2 Starts streaming: Oct. 29

The “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes brings his uncommon knack for energetic historical melodrama to “The Gilded Age,” a lavishly decorated and irresistibly entertaining look at high society in 1880s New York City. Carrie Coon is superb as a shrewd social climber, married to a nouveau-riche tycoon (Morgan Spector) whose ruthless business tactics irritate the old money types. The rest of the cast includes Louisa Jacobson as a restless young woman living with her eccentric, judgmental aunts (Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon) and Denée Benton as an aspiring writer defying the era’s racist biases. Season 2 will continue Fellowes’s fascination with a pivotal era in American culture, when the upper-crust considered whether an ascendant democracy should still be following Europe’s unwritten rules of etiquette.

‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ Starts streaming: Oct. 6

The final film from William Friedkin is both an adaptation of Herman Wouk’s provocative 1953 play “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” ( updated to modern times by Friedkin , who wrote the screenplay) and a summation of the director’s career-long fascination with the line between legal authority and raw power, as seen in his classic films “The French Connection” and “To Live and Die in L.A.” Jason Clarke plays Lieutenant Barney Greenwald, a Navy lawyer defending Lt. Stephen Maryk, who defied orders and relieved his commanding officer Lt. Cmdr. Phillip Queeg (Kiefer Sutherland) of duty during a storm. Though mostly confined to one courtroom set, the movie is a thrilling actors’ showcase; and as with the play, it toys with the audience’s sympathies, raising questions about how justice is properly served in a case involving the rigid military chain of command.

‘Frasier’ Season 1 Starts streaming: Oct. 12

Kelsey Grammer returns to his most famous role, in a sequel series that surrounds the fussy psychiatrist Frasier Crane with a mostly new cast of characters. Crane moves back to Boston from Seattle and gets involved in the lives of his son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott), and his nephew, David (Anders Keith). Freddy has turned out a lot like Frasier’s father, Martin — rugged and unpretentious — while David has the same dry wit and nervous energy as Frasier’s brother, Niles. Like the old “Frasier,” this new one traffics in farce, with the comedy driven by misunderstandings and personality clashes.

‘Fellow Travelers’ Starts streaming: Oct. 27

This historical romance tells a story that stretches from the 1950s to the ’80s, tracing a love affair between two political consultants whose lives are affected by the changing times. Matt Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, a savvy, politically flexible congressional aide who has a fling with Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), a right-wing speechwriter who admires Joseph McCarthy. Their relationship stretches across decades, through the more permissive ’60s and ’70s and into the conservative revival of the Reagan era. Adapted by the Oscar-nominated “Philadelphia” screenwriter Ron Nyswaner from a Thomas Mallon novel, “Fellow Travelers” is dotted with real-life historical figures and explicitly erotic sex scenes, illustrating how basic human needs can be undone by political expediency.

‘John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams’ Starts streaming: Oct. 13

The influential genre filmmaker and composer John Carpenter lends his name, his music and — for one episode — his directing talents to this hybrid anthology series, which combines true crime and horror. Each episode is anchored by interviews with ordinary people who experienced something extraordinary, encountering real evil in the form of the creeps, the killers and the unexplained phenomena in their seemingly placid neighborhoods. The interviews provide the basic details for these tales; and then the bulk of each “Suburban Screams” episode consists of lengthy re-enactments that have the look and feel of an ’80s slasher movie, as though Carpenter’s “Halloween” were a documentary.

Prey Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg succeeded in delivering a fantastic addition to the famed Predator series with this prequel, ‘Prey’ . It’s the simplicity of the movie that allows it to shine so brightly. As the Predator movies have always conveyed the feeling of despair and the thrill of the hunt. And here the unwilling prey comes in the form of a formidable Comanche warrior named Naru, seeking to protect her tribe and battling predators in the form of wild creatures and aliens alike. Naru struggles to survive against the deadly alien hunter. The Predator franchise has stood as one of the all-time great horror series. Let the Right One In Young Oskar ( Kåre Hedebrant) is a bullied twelve-year-old boy living with his mother in suburban Sweden. However, he soon forms a budding friendship with his new neighbor Eli ( Lina Leandersson ), a pale and mysterious girl who only comes out at night. The pair form a close and quasi-romantic bond, but soon Eli shares her dark, twisted secret with Oskar, revealing her bloody connection to a string of local murders. ‘Let the Right One In’ is a chilling movie when it needs to be, and it personally delivers everything I want in a traditional vampire-themed horror. Come True A teenage runaway ( Julia Sarah Stone ) takes part in a sleep study that soon becomes a frightening descent into the depths of her mind and a disturbing examination of the power of dreams. Director, Anthony Scott Burns , delivers on this creepy blend of sci-fi and horror as it proposes an unsettling concept.  What would you do if your worst nightmares came forth into the real world? The film plays with this concept perfectly and leaves its viewers with a dreaded sense of terror hovering over them while managing to paint horror imagery both vividly and with originality. ‘Come True’ manages to check many of the boxes I desire when it comes to quality horror cinema, and Hulu viewers should consider giving this amazing film a watch. Shaun of the Dead Shaun ( Simon Pegg ) is in his thirties and lives an uneventful life as an electronics salesman who shares a home with his layabout best friend. That is, until it’s disrupted by a zombie apocalypse that forces him to be the man his girlfriend has always desperately wished he’d become. As Shaun must rise to the occasion and protect those around him as they fight…and flight for survival. With ‘Shaun of the Dead’, writer/director, Edgar Wright , delivers a hilarious mashup of comedy and horror that saw him confidently make the jump from television to feature filmmaking. Showing that the ever-popular genre of zombie movies continues to be a well-received one when done correctly, and also proving that the zombie horror genre can also be coupled with big laughs to great effect. Hulu users won’t regret treating themselves to this horror-filled comedy, as ‘Shaun of the Dead’ remains a great movie as it reaches it’s 20th anniversary. The Halloween season is finally here, and that means we’ve got a whole slew of new movies and television to watch — spooktacular or otherwise. Whether you’re following along with our yearly countdown calendar or looking for the best horror movies on Netflix or other streaming services , we’ve got you covered. Aside from those, there’s a ton of exciting new films arriving on streaming this month.

Disappointed about the delay of Dune: Part Two ? Yeah, us too. At the very least, we can still watch the first installment of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic now that it’s streaming on Netflix . Jordan Peele’s Get Out is on Netflix, too, just in time for the holiday, along with the first three Scream movies now streaming on Max.

Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi opera about clashing noble houses vying for control of the universe’s most coveted resource is an extraordinary cinematic spectacle and the best adaptation of the series to date.

Set in the distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the scion of a powerful empire who, along with his father, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac), and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), is sent to live on the desert planet Arrakis to oversee the production and distribution of rare psychoactive spice. When the Atreides’ lifelong nemeses, the Harkonnens, led by the vicious Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård), ambush the family and lay siege to their army, Paul and his mother must flee the carnage and take refuge in the desert, where he discovers his role in a far grander destiny.

A massive critical and commercial success upon its release, the sequel to Dune was one of the most anticipated releases of 2023 before it was pushed back to next year due to the WGA strike and the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike . If you’re as bummed about the delay of Dune: Part Two as I am, now’s the perfect opportunity to rewatch the first film in anticipation for the sequel’s premiere in March. —Toussaint Egan

What could possibly be said about Jordan Peele’s acclaimed directorial debut that hasn’t been said already? Get Out was a revelation when it was released in 2017, reinventing Peele’s reputation from a successful comedian into a modern maestro of horror and delivering Daniel Kaluuya his breakthrough role into stardom.

The film follows the story of Chris (Kaluuya), a young Black man and talented photographer who drives with his white girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), to visit her parents at their home in upstate New York. Upon arriving, Chris realizes there’s more to this visit than meets the eye, as he’s thrust into a deadly situation that has him fighting not only for his freedom, but his very life. A horrifying twist on Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner by way of The Stepford Wives , Get Out feels just as witty, inventive, and revelatory in 2023 as it did when it first premiered. It’s easily one of the best horror movies of the 2010s, and an auspicious debut for one of the most talented filmmakers of his generation. —TE

Park Chan-wook is in the top tier of living filmmakers for me, so of course I’m fond of even the “minor” works in his catalog. Stoker , his only English-language movie to date, is an eerie, atmospheric psychological thriller that’s a perfect fit for people who want to participate in spooky season without getting too scared.

It’s India Stoker’s (Mia Wasikowska) 18th birthday. Her father (Dermot Mulroney) has died, and her mother (Nicole Kidman) has welcomed his younger brother (Matthew Goode) into their home. What follows is a Hitchcockian gothic fairy tale filled with sensory delight. The score is pitch-perfect in the eerie atmosphere it provides, and Park never fails to deliver memorable images.

Oh, and fun fact: The movie was written by Wentworth Miller, of Prison Break /CW-verse fame, under a pseudonym. — Pete Volk

The Scream franchise is one of the most consistent, especially for horror. The first three are must-watches (the fourth, streaming on Peacock, also rules), and whether it’s for the first time or the 15th, they’re essential October viewing.

Even if you haven’t watched the franchise, you’re likely familiar with Scream’s meta nature, engaging directly with the tropes and expectations of the horror genre. It’s frankly remarkable that all that works without being cloying or annoying, but it’s a testament to the genius of Wes Craven, who went from directing some of the scariest movies of the 1970s and ’80s to interrogating the genre from within this series.

It takes a master of a genre to be able to parody it effectively. It’s true diegetically and metatextually in Scream: The call is coming from inside the house. — PV

Crawl is a perfectly constructed slice of sub-90-minute thrills. A collegiate swimmer (Kaya Scodelario) goes home to check on her dad (Barry Pepper) after hearing that a big hurricane is coming their way. When she gets there, she finds her dad unconscious, the house floods, and she is surrounded by alligators. She must use her athletic skills, her wits, and every ounce of courage possible to get her, her dad, and the family dog out of there alive.

A master class in tension from director Alexandre Aja ( Piranha 3D ), Crawl is the kind of economical thriller we don’t get as often anymore. Scodelario shines as the determined swimmer Haley Keller, and the movie’s combination of practical effects and convincing VFX makes this one an immersive, taut, fun time at the movies. — PV

Hulu has a wealth of great scary horror movies available to stream right now, and we've picked out some of the best. The sheer number of streaming services available now means it's sometimes hard to know what to watch, but it's hard to deny that it's a great time to be a movie fan. Whatever genre you like, there's a huge number of movies available on both the big platforms and more niche services, and horror fans are perhaps the best served of all.

Hulu's selection is heavier on modern horror than older classics, but that makes it a great place to catch up on some stand-out chillers from the past two decades. Monster movie fans can check out the hungry alligators of Crawl and subterranean creatures in The Descent, while those who prefer vampires and zombies have got favorites such as Let the Right One In and 28 Days Later to watch.

Egor Abramenko, 2020

Sputnik is an impressive Russian horror about a cosmonaut who returns to Earth after a mysterious accident with what seems to be a symbiotic alien lifeform living inside him. While Sputnik takes ideas from numerous famous movies, most notably Alien and Arrival, it's a scary, serious, and stylish creature feature in its own right.

Babak Anvari, 2019

This unpredictable and sometimes nightmarish film takes influence from David Cronenberg, as well as Japanese horror classics such as Ring. It focuses on a bartender who finds strange messages on a phone left in his bar, from someone who claims something or someone is following him.

Little Monsters

Abe forsythe, 2019.

This undead comedy stars Lupita Nyong'o as a schoolteacher who must protect her class during the onset of a zombie apocalypse. It also features Josh Gad (Frozen) as a bungling kids entertainer and is a lighthearted undead romp for those looking for something a little less serious than many of the other movies on this list.

The House that Jack Built

Lars von trier, 2018.

Von Trier's 155-minute serial killer movie certainly isn't for everyone, but fans of the Danish provocateur will know what to expect, especially if you're seen his last horror movie, 2009's equally controversial Antichrist. It's a provocative, sometimes hilarious, sometimes shocking film that charts the life of a killer, chillingly played by Matt Dillon.

Many years before Godzilla vs. Kong, director Adam Wingard delivered this home invasion/slasher movie hybrid, in which a dysfunctional family gathering is brought to an abrupt close by animal-masked crazies. As they’re trying to solve the mystery, things get very, very creepy.

The Babadook

One of the best horror films of the 2010s has not been widely available for streaming subscribers so take the chance to watch it again while it’s on Hulu. Jennifer Kent’s directorial debut centers on a mother (Essie Davis) who struggles to raise her problem child alone after the death of her husband. Oh, and there’s also a real monster in the boy’s room.

Isn’t it cool when you can learn something while you watch a horror movie? Viewers may not know that the British Board of Film Classification and the Video Nasty wave of censorship were real things , into which Bailey-Bond tosses the character of Enid, a woman who goes down a rabbit hole of madness as she becomes more attached to her job.

* Doctor Sleep

Year: 2019 Runtime: 2h 32m Director: Mike Flanagan

Almost four decades after Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining , Mike Flanagan ( The Haunting of Hill House ) adapted the sequel by Stephen King with what felt like mixed results. However, in just the few years since this movie came out, it feels like the cult following has grown. It’s a stylish drama that kind of falls apart in the final act, but has enough good stuff before that to recommend a look.

* The Empty Man

20th Century Fox had absolutely no idea what to do with David Prior’s adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, so they quietly shuttled it into theaters and then VOD. The funny thing is that this ambitious study of an ex-cop (James Badge Dale) who investigates a missing girl has already started to develop a cult following of its own. It’s a smart, unique piece of work that is only going to get more and more popular.

Infinity Pool

Year: 2023 Runtime: 1h 58m Director: Brandon Cronenberg

The director of Possessor returned this year with a more twisted affair starring Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth. The True Blood vamp plays a wealthy novelist who accidentally kills a local man at a seaside resort and discovers there’s a way for rich people to avoid the law in this part of the world. Insanely constructed and unforgettable in its imagery, Infinity Pool is one of the best films of the first half of 2023.

Little Monsters

Year: 2019 Runtime: 1h 34m Director: Abe Forsythe

Lupita Nyong’o can do absolutely anything. Just look at this horror-comedy about a group of schoolchildren who get attacked by waves of the undead. Lupita rules as the teacher and the only one who knows how to act heroic in the moment. And she’s joined by a fun supporting performance from Josh Gad, who is very from Olaf here.

Year: 2022 Runtime: 1h 47m Director: Mark Mylod

A regular director on Succession , Mylod made his directorial debut with this black comedy/horror film about a chef’s tasting to remember. Ralph Fiennes bites into a juicy role as a celebrity chef who has decided that the meal he’s cooking for his wealthy guests might be their last. Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau, and Janet McTeer co-star in a film that’s already a cult hit on streaming services only about a year after its release.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Year: 2013 Runtime: 2h 3m Director: Jim Jarmusch

How does one possibly begin to describe one of the most wonderfully odd films of the 2010s? Jim Jarmusch wrote and directed this story of apathetic vampires, creatures who have lived so long and seen so much that the world mostly leaves them apathetic. Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston are fantastic in the lead roles, and they’re matched by great supporting turns from Mia Wasikowska, Anton Yelchin, Jeffrey Wright, and John Hurt.

Personal Shopper

Year: 2016 Runtime: 1h 45m Director: Olivier Assayas

Olivier Assayas’s ghost story is not your typical tale of the supernatural. The French filmmaker, working in perfect conjunction with star Kristen Stewart, who has never been better, crafts a film about loss, fear, and longing. It’s not an easy film to dissect or understand, but you won’t forget it.

It turns out that the creative apple didn’t fall too far from the tree in the case of the Cronenberg family. David’s son Brandon helmed this shocking piece of body horror about a future wherein people possess others to commit crimes. That’s just the beginning in a fearless film that stars Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Sean Bean, and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Resurrection

Year: 2022 Runtime: 1h 43m Director: Andrew Semans

You have never really seen a movie like this one. A stunning showcase for the talent of Rebecca Hall, this drama follows a woman whose world is shattered when an abusive ex (played chillingly by Tim Roth) re-enters her life. What seems at first like a traditional thriller becomes something else entirely, especially in a daring and surreal final act that must be seen to be believed.

Maybe you’ve heard of it? Some movies are in these guides to highlight movies that readers may not have considered watching, but pretty much everyone with Hulu has seen David Fincher’s masterpiece already. The question is if you want to know what’s in the box again? If you somehow have never seen it, Se7en is the story of two detectives (Brad Pitt & Morgan Freeman) who hunt a serial killer basing his crimes on the seven deadly sins. It shook the movie world when it was released and it’s still influencing thrillers released a quarter-century later.

The shocking winner of the Palme d’Or in 2021, this horror drama by Julia Ducournau is about … you know, it’s almost impossible to put in a capsule. There’s a woman who has a titanium plate in her head who has a carnal relation with a car before committing a few murders and hiding her identity to escape, forming an unusual relationship with a man who believes she is his missing son. That doesn’t really capture this daring, unforgettable piece of work.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

Year: 2010 Runtime: 1h 29m Director: Eli Craig

This horror/comedy hardly made an impact when it was released in 2010 but has become a true cult hit in the decade since on DVD and streaming services. The main reason is that Tyler Labine and Alan Tudyk have perfect comic timing as a pair of lovable hillbillies who get caught up in a crazy horror movie situation that leads to a lot of laughs and buckets of blood. Now give us a sequel!

Year: 2022 Runtime: 1h 36m Director: Chloe Okuno

One of the best films of 2022, this was a Shudder exclusive until recently. Inspired by ‘70s paranoia horror, Watcher stars Maika Monroe ( It Follows ) as a woman who has moved to Romania with her husband Francis (Karl Glusman). Without much to do and unable to speak the language, she starts to get paranoid that someone is watching her from across the courtyard. Stylish and riveting, it’s a must-see.

We Need to Do Something

Year: 2021 Runtime: 1h 37m Director: Sean King O’Grady

With an energy that feels impacted by the pandemic, this is a great single-setting scare-fest. Sierra McCormick, Vinessa Shaw, John James Cronin, and the amazing Pat Healy play a family who get stuck in their own bathroom on the day world happens to end. It doesn’t go well. And, believe it or not, this film features a demon dog voiced by Ozzy Osbourne. You know you need to see that.

Year: 2019 Runtime: 1h 36m Director: Babak Anvari

The director of the excellent Under the Shadow followed that up with his first American film, a Sundance premiere that stars Dakota Johnson and Armie Hammer in a tale of surreal madness. Hulu picked up it up, where it lives exclusively, ready to break your brain. Undeniably Cronenberg-inspired, Wounds is the tale of a bartender who basically loses his mind.

You Are Not My Mother 

Year: 2022 Runtime: 1h 33m Director: Kate Dolan

Hazel Doupe stars in this fantastic story of a young woman who watches her mother start to drift away, possibly under the grip of madness. When she disappears, the daughter suspects something supernatural is at play. A smart horror fable, this film premiered at TIFF in 2021 and was released early in 2022. It’s exclusively available on Hulu.
