Bogle Chardonnay 2021

Winemaker notes.

The 2021 growing season has graced this Chardonnay with some added complexity. The green apple and pear aromatics from Clarksburg Chardonnay are complemented by notes of tangerine and stone fruit, while honeysuckle and vanilla heighten the first impression. The rich and creamy entry rolls into a viscous and silky mouthfeel, surrounded by Asian pears and Honeycrisp apples. The finish lingers long and soft, like the wafting aromas of grandma’s warm apple pie.

This versatile wine pairs well with grilled fish, roasted chicken, fresh green salads, and soft, mild cheeses.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast , Carneros , Santa Cruz Mountains , Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley .

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River , Sonoma , Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros .

Bogle Chardonnay

Tasting notes.

Lush ripe aged dry white wine. Golden yellow with big tears. Rich aroma of fresh oak, white stone fruit, vanilla, hazelnuts and dried spices. Wide dry flavour with clear wood impression. Firm and full of character, with lots of sweet fruit in the finish. Goes well with grilled or glazed fish and white meats, spicy grilled vegetables dishes and mature hard cheeses. Serving temperature: 12°C. 

It all started with a failed potato crop in the 1960s.

Our grandfather, Warren V. Bogle , grew a variety of row crops including corn, wheat and safflower, but in 1968 he sought a crop he didn’t have to replant every year.

He figured potatoes would be a perfect fit on our Home Ranch which is located in the heart of California’s Delta .

The potatoes almost immediately died, and our grandfather sought an explanation. The farmer he brought in to take a look told him, “I’m not quite sure why your potatoes died , but I can tell you one thing, this is perfect soil for wine grapes.”

The rest was history as they say, and we are grateful for it.

Our grandfather planted ten acres of Petite Sirah and ten acres of Chenin Blanc . More than 50 years later we still grow the two varietals here on our Home Ranch in Clarksburg. Our grandfather was a pioneer , taking a real chance with those 20 acres. At the time no other farm had planted wine grapes in Clarksburg. Today, there are more than 7000 hectares of wine grapes and more than 20 wineries that call the Clarksburg AVA home.

Our family grew wine grapes for 10 years for other wineries until 1978 when we made our first bottle of wine under the Bogle name. After Warren passed away, our parents, Chris and Patty, helped grow this once small family farm to become a wine brand found in households across the world. It is something our grandfather could never have imagined would come true.

Today, our wines are found in more than 40 countries and the company is led by myself, Jody Bogle, and my brothers Ryan Bogle and Warren Bogle. We are proud to carry on the tradition that was started by our parents and grandparents all those years ago, just because of a few potatoes.

Reserve Chardonnay

The cool nighttime harvest preserved these whole Chardonnay clusters that were then lightly pressed to extract their succulent juice, while avoiding skin and seed contact as much as possible. Aromas of spicy nutmeg and freshly baked brioche tantalize the senses, while the fresh, wholesome juiciness of Golden Delicious apples and Bartlett pears shine. The rich and silky mouthfeel, enhanced with hand stirring each barrel twice a month, leaves a decadent finish of brown butter and cream.

From our Sutter Ranch south of Clarksburg, this Reserve Chardonnay embodies all the characteristics that make our region so well-known for Chardonnay: complexity, richness and concentration in each glass.

What is buttery chardonnay.

Buttery Chardonnay is a style of Chardonnay that is characterized by its signature buttery flavor. This buttery flavor comes from the process of malolactic fermentation , which is when bacteria converts the wine’s natural malic acid into lactic acid.

Lactic acid is what gives butter its characteristic rich and creamy flavor. Think the taste of buttered popcorn, vanilla, and creamy milk.

Why is it Buttery?

Malolactic Fermentation (MLF)

MLF is called a secondary fermentation. But because it does not use yeast, Malolactic Fermentation actually isn’t a fermentation. It’s a bacteria that consumes malic acid and excretes lactic acid.

This secondary (or bacterial) fermentation is the main reason buttery chardonnays exist. And MLF is a process where bacteria transforms the natural tart malic acids (the same acid in tart apple ) in wine into creamy lactic acid (the same acid in milk ). Lactic acid is what gives the wine its characteristic creamy and rich buttery flavor.

Most red wines and a few white wines go through malolactic fermentation.

WineO Tip – Some wine makers allow just a portion of the wine to undergo malolactic fermentation. This is a technique for giving the wine body and texture without losing too much aroma and flavors.

Oak Barrel Aging

Malolactic Fermentation typically occurs while wines age in oak barrels. Therefore, buttery Chardonnays are usually aged in oak as well.

Oak barrel aging not only adds buttery and creamy notes to the wine, but it also contributes aromas and flavors of vanilla, baking spices, and coconut.

New World Chardonnays tend to have more pronounced oak flavors because they typically use newer oak barrels. On the other hand, Chardonnays from Burgundy tend to have more subtle oak flavors because they use neutral oak barrels that will impart less oak flavors.

Buttery chardy

I keep running into people who love this old-fashioned style of chardonnay, but have difficulty finding Australian examples that they enjoy. I have to admit, this has a lot going for it.

The colour is full yellow and it has a rich, buttery chardonnay bouquet, full of personality. It’s again rich and full in the mouth, in an up-front, forward-developed style. It’s fully ready now, and hard to see it aging long or improving from here. A round, generous, buttered-toasty chardonnay. (Cork)
