Drone Fishing with DJI Phantom 4, Phanto

DJI is by far the leader in the drone market worldwide with an estimated market share of 70%.

DJI has very sophisticated and reliable drones with long range and many safety features like Auto Return Home. They can be flown by a novice operator.

Models: DJI Mavic Pro [all models], Mavic 2 [all models], Phantom 4 [all models] and Phantom 3 [all models] and Mavic Air. Mavic 2, Mavic Pro and Mavic Air are more compact drones for transportation.

Maximum recommended payload lifting capability (in calm air and without wind):

Phantom 4: 1.8 pounds (0.85 Kg) or less

Phantom 3: 2.2 pounds (1 Kg) or less

Mavic 2: 1.75 pounds (0.8 Kg) or less

Mavic Pro: 1.5 pounds (0.7 Kg) or less

Mavic Air: 0.6 pounds (0.27 Kg) or less

Fly safe and maintain full control of the drone. Carrying heavy payload will drain the drone’s battery faster.

Have the latest software/firmware updates installed on your drone, remote controller and battery. Keep your DJI App up to date.

Important note:

Decrease the maximum payload weight during windy conditions and do not fly in very strong winds. For your safety and safety of others, always fly safe and away from people or objects. Follow and observe all laws, rules and regulations in your Country, State, Local County and Municipalities.

Drone Sky Hook

Release & drop device.

Attach the Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop device to the DJI Drone in seconds without using tools.

It has fast, solid positive lock to the drone and will not slide out of position. No rubber bands required to secure device to drone! No modification of any kind to the drone is required!

Small size, light weight, self-contained smart device allows your drone to lift maximum weight bait and fishing line the drone can safely carry.

Your fishing line with its lure/bait is hanging down from the Release & Drop device that drops it into the water upon your command (bait casting or bait release or bait dropper).

Three electronic remote and simultaneous Bait Release & Drop methods (no yanking, pulling or jerking the fishing line to release it from the drone):

C1 or C2 button on the DJI drone remote controller

Simple drone rotation (operates without linkage to the drone’s front light)

Manual control

Sophisticated and very easy to operate. It has the easiest and fastest one-hand bait hookup to the drone.

Unlimited operation range - as far as your drone can safely fly.

Use the Fail-Safe Drop Cord that can save your drone from crashing into the water. It automatically disconnects the fishing line from your drone when the fishing line gets tangled in the reel or caught in seaweeds, rocks, seagulls, birds or other object in the water.

Do not use the available downrigger release clip, self-disconnect fishing clips or other release mechanism for fishing as they might not release the fishing line from the drone (or release it prematurely), causing your drone to crash or sink into the water and becoming a brick (dead). Your drone is not a fishing kite!

Drone Fishing Technique

Install the Drone Sky Hook (DSH) Release & Drop device on your DJI drone.

Fully charge the drone battery(s), remote controller, viewing screen device (smart phone, iPad or tablet) and DSH Release & Drop device.

At the fishing area setup your DJI drone and turn it ON (do not activate the propellers yet), turn ON the DSH Release & Drop device and hook the Fail-Safe Drop cord ring on the drop wheel of the Release & Drop device. Follow DSH videos.

Connect your fishing line to the snap on the other end of the Fail-Safe Drop cord. It should be connected to the fishing line at the connection point of the Sinker (weight) and the 1 to 3 feet Leader line with the Fishing Hook to the fishing line. See pictures below for Rig Setup.

Drone fishing with Drone Sky Hook caught

Before you take off verify that the drone, Fail-Safe Drop cord, fishing line and bait/lure neatly lay flat and are not tangled with any object.

Unlock the reel on your fishing rod and apply gentle pressure with your finger on the fishing line at the reel to prevent it from unspooling too fast and getting tangled on the reel.

Activate the drone’s propellers and slowly take off away from people and objects. Carefully and safely fly away towards the drop zone, allowing your drone to pull the fishing line from the reel with minimal resistance.

Point the drone’s camera downward and search the water for the fish on the real-time video that the drone’s camera sends back to your drone’s remote controller display.

With a push on the C1/C2 button on the drone’s remote controller (or by simply rotating the drone), release and drop or drag the fishing line with its lure/bait right at the spot that you see the fish (bait casting/bait release/bait dropper). It's that easy and you are in total control.

Fly the drone back manually or use the Return To Home (RTH) button on the remote controller to automatically return to your takeoff position on the beach or dock. Do not use the Return To Home (RTH) button on the remote controller if you fly back to a boat as the boat location continuously changes.

Fly safe and maintain full control of the drone. Carrying heavy payload will drain the drone’s battery faster. Decrease the maximum payload weight during windy conditions and do not fly in very strong winds. For your safety and safety of others, always fly safe and away from people or objects. Follow and observe all laws, rules and regulations in your Country, State, Local County and Municipalities.

Mavic and Phantom Drone Fishing - Catch Tuna, Snapper, Shark and more

Updated September 15, 2019

I LOVE FISHING and Drone Fishing is the latest thrilling fishing technique that I use during my fishing expeditions. Imagine to yourself going drone fishing in Florida, California and Alaska (USA), Australia, the Caribbean Islands, Costa Rica, Canada, Europe, the Red Sea and other places.

I love Drone Fishing

Drone Fishing took my fishing experience to the next level! Nothing can compare to comfortably sitting on the beach, dock or boat while my drone pulls my fishing line into the ocean or lake, and I'm viewing the drone's real-time camera video on my drone’s remote controller display, searching for the big fish. Forget about the limited application of the “in the water” fish finder, Kite fishing, Balloon fishing, Rigging, Trawling and other angling methods. Go with the “above the water” drone fish finder where you can actually see the fish in the water!

There is no need to guess where the fish is. I find the fish on the real-time video that the drone’s camera sends back to my drone’s remote controller display. Then, with a push of a button on the drone’s remote controller, or by simply rotating the drone, I release & drop or drag the fishing line with its lure/bait (bait casting or bait release or bait dropper) right at the spot where I see the fish. It's that easy and I’m in total control.

In Florida, the Caribbean Islands and Costa Rica you can do saltwater and freshwater drone fishing for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi-Mahi (dorado or dolphin fish), Blackfin or Yellowfin Tuna, Snappers, Groupers, Jacks, Kingfish, Barracuda, spotted sea trout, Snook, sharks, Tarpon and Bass.

California fish are White Seabass, Halibut, Barracuda, Yellowtail, Salmon, Cod and Tuna.

Drone fishing in Alaska is a treat. You will throw back fish that would be considered trophies elsewhere. Halibut, Salmon (five species), Lingcod and rockfish.

Drone Fishing Mahi-Mahi (dorado or dolph

Australia’s coast is surrounded by some of the best deep-sea fishing in the world and drone fishing is a fast growing sport in Australia: Black and Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Tuna, Groper, Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi (dorado or dolphin fish), Cod, Spanish Mackerel, Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Pink Snapper, Queen Snapper, Bight Redfish, Swallowtail, Yellowtail Kingfish, Samson fish, King George Whiting and Sharks.

The fish in Canada are plentiful and drone fishing can be done on the ocean or lakes: Tuna, blue fin, Salmon, Mackerel, Cod, Halibut, Skarks, Walleye, Northern pike fishing, Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling, Whitefish, Bass and Sharks.

Europe is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea: Blue Marlin, Bluefin Tuna, Swordfish, Bigeye Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi-Mahi (dorado or dolphin fish), Wahoo, Skipjack, Tuna, Bluefish, Grouper, Barracuda and Sharks.

Drone fishing in the blue waters and coral reefs of the Red Sea for Groupers, Big bye, Snappers, Breams Wrasses, Coral Trout, Mahi-Mahi (dorado or dolphin fish), King Mackerel, Barracuda, Yellowfin Tuna, Giant Trevally, Sailfish and Sharks.

Drone Fishing with Phantom 4

It is imperative to use a good quality drone for drone fishing. DJI drones (Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro Platinum, Mavic 2, Mavic Air, Phantom 4 [all models] and Phantom 3 [all models]) are well suited for drone fishing. These are very sophisticated and reliable drones with long range and many safety features like Auto Return Home. DJI drones  can be flown by a novice operator. DJI is by far the leader in the drone market worldwide with an estimated market share of 70%. I stayed away from other drones since they cannot rival the quality and sophistication of the DJI drones. When not operating the drone for fishing, DJI drones can be used for other activities like aerial photography, carry and drop gifts and parachutes during a party or birthday celebration and even for search and rescue. Using the DJI drones year round for drone fishing and other activities make them a cost effective purchase.

My five fishing drones are the DJI Phantom 3 (4 years old and still flies well), DJI Phantom 4, DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, DJI Mavic Pro and DJI Mavic Air. As seen on videos that people posted on YouTube, the maximum payload lifting capability (in calm air and without wind) of the DJI Phantom 3 is about 2.2 pounds (1 Kg) compared with 1.8 pounds (0.85 Kg) for the DJI Phantom 4, 1.75 pounds (0.8 Kg) for the Mavic 2, 1.5 pounds (0.7 Kg) for the DJI Mavic Pro and 0.6 pounds (0.27 Kg) for the Mavic Air. The DJI Mavic 2, DJI Mavic Pro and DJI Mavic Air are more compact drones for transportation. To fly safe and maintain full control of the drone I never carried more than 1.1 pounds (0.5 Kg) with my drones (0.5 pounds or 0.227 Kg with Mavic Air).

Always have the latest software/firmware updates installed on your drone, remote controller and battery. Your DJI App should be up to date as well. Keep in mind that carrying heavy payload will drain the drone’s battery faster. Decrease the maximum payload weight during windy conditions and do not fly in very strong winds. For your safety and safety of others, always fly safe and away from people or objects. Follow and observe all laws, rules and regulations in your Country, State, Local County and Municipalities.

I use all my DJI drones (Mavic 2, Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro Platinum, Mavic Air, Phantom 4 [all models] and Phantom 3 [all models]) on my deep sea fishing expeditions and fresh water fishing with much success. Be aware of the maximum payload lifting capacity of each drone type. The DJI Spark has very limited payload lifting capability and I do not recommend using it for drone fishing.

Drone Fishing with Mavic

THE RELEASE & DROP DEVICE (bait release or bait casting or bait dropping)

Drone Sky Hook Release and Drop Device f

The Release & Drop device is a separate device that is mounted on the DJI Drone. Your fishing line with its lure/bait is hanging down from the Release & Drop device that drops it into the water upon your command (bait casting or bait release or bait dropper). In my opinion, Drone Sky Hook company manufactures the best, most sophisticated and very easy to operate Release & Drop devices for the DJI drones (Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro Platinum, Mavic 2, Mavic Air, Phantom 4 [all models] and Phantom 3 [all models]). Don’t waste your time and money on other unsophisticated drones, cheap and inferior release & drop devices that attached to the drone with rubber bands or Velcro or solutions that don't work, aren't reliable and can cause your drone to crash into the water and become total loss! Do not use the available downrigger release clip, self-disconnect fishing clips or other mechanical release mechanism for drone fishing as they require yanking, pulling or jerking the fishing line to release and might not release the fishing line from the drone (or release it prematurely), causing your drone to crash or sink into the water (total loss). Your drone is not a fishing kite!

Never attach fishing line, hook(s) and lure/Bait directly to your drone! They must be connected to a drop wheel of the Release & Drop device via the Fail-Safe Drop cord.

Drone Sky Hook company has a Fail-Safe Drop cord (designed to work with Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop devices). The cord automatically disconnects the fishing line from your drone when the fishing line gets tangled in the reel or caught in seaweeds, rocks, seagulls, birds or other object in the water and thus saving your drone from crashing.

Pairing the DJI drones with Drone Sky Hook company Release & Drop devices and the Fail-Safe Drop cord creates the ultimate drone fishing system for me.

DRONE FISHING

Install the Drone Sky Hook (DSH) Release & Drop device on your DJI drone . Follow Drone Sky Hook videos and operating instructions.

Verify that the drone batteries and remote controller are fully charged. Take at least 2 drone batteries with you. A DJI car charger will allow you to charge the batteries at the fishing area or you can plug a “12 VDC to 115 VAC (or 220 VAC) inverter” into your car power jack and then plug the standard DJI charger to the inverter.

Fully charge the DSH Release & Drop device.

Carefully fly away towards the drop zone, allowing your drone to pull the fishing line from the reel with minimal resistance.

Point the drone’s camera downward and search the water for the fish on the real-time video that the drone’s camera sends back to your drone’s remote controller display. Then, with a push of a button on the drone’s remote controller, or by simply rotating the drone, release & drop or drag the fishing line with its lure/bait right at the spot that you see the fish (bait casting/bait release/bait dropper).

I discovered that I can remotely command the Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop device to drop my fishing line with its lure/bait (bait casting/bait release/bait dropper) into the water by either using the C1/C2 buttons (C/Fn buttons for Mavic Air) on my drone’s remote controller or by simply rotating my drone. I used both drop methods and they work well. If I don’t want to be bothered with clipping the light sensor of the Release & Drop device to the drone’s light then I use the “drone rotation” drop method that requires no light sensor (self-contained).

Always have the latest software/firmware updates installed on your drone, remote controller and battery. Your DJI App should be up to date.

Drone Fishing Rig Setup - Fail-Safe cord

Fail-Safe Drop Cord Rig Setup

Fail-Safe Trolling Drop Cord Rig Setup

Drone Sky Hook SearchLight

For low-light, low visibility conditions or night fishing I use the Drone Sky Hook ’s Searchlight that is mounted on my DJI drone and can be Turned-On or Turned-Off remotely. It requires the Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop PLUS device for operation. I found that it attracts fish to my lure/bait at night while helping me see the drone position, orientation and direction much better.

On average, DJI drones cost between US$500 and US$1,200 depending on the selected options and accessories (free shipping from DJI). Release & Drop Device: US$199 for Drone Sky Hook Daylight System or US$349 for Drone Sky Hook Daylight & Low-Light System. The Fail-Safe Trolling Drop Cord model number DSH-FSTDC1 cost US$39. Drone Sky Hook offers free shipping.

But let’s put things in perspective: The cost of a good fishing rod is US$300 - US$500, a good reel goes for US$200 to US$1,200 each and don’t forget to add the cost of the fishing line, hooks, lure/bait and other fishing accessories. Hiring a private deep sea fishing charter boat for a few hours can cost you US$700 - US1,500.

Do yourself a favor and do not buy cheap, ineffective and dangerous Release & Drop device that can cause your drone to crash into the water! Do not try to save a few Dollars on a device that put your drone at risk of crashing into the water (total loss of the drone).

Drone fishing is not cheap but going for the big fish is not cheap either. The excitement of drone fishing is worth every penny you invest in it.

DJI and Drone Sky Hook logos

WHAT AND WHERE TO BUY

Warning: Stay away from cheap, low quality, short range and unreliable drop devices that can cause your expensive drone to crash into the ocean!

As discussed earlier, you can use your DJI drone or purchase one (DJI Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro Platinum, Mavic 2, Mavic Air, Phantom 4 [all models] or Phantom 3 [all models]). Buy the Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop device that fits your drone model: Drone Sky Hook Daylight System that includes the Fail-Safe Drop cord or for low light or night fishing buy the Drone Sky Hook Daylight & Low-Light System that includes the SearchLight and Fail-Safe Drop cord. For trolling fishing add the Fail-Safe Trolling Drop Cord model number DSH-FSTDC1 to either system.

Important: The SearchLight will not operate with the Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop device. It requires the Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop PLUS device for operation.

I strongly recommend that you purchase the Drone Sky Hook Drone Sky Hook Daylight & Low-Light System that fits your drone model. This system comes with the Sky Hook Release & Drop PLUS device that allows for future expansion of your drone fishing adventures. The nifty PLUS model let me add SearchLight for night fishing and other future accessories to my DJI drone. I can remotely operate the SearchLight and other accessories by either using the C1/C2 buttons on my drone’s remote controller or by simply rotating my drone.

Occasionally, DJI reduces their drone prices. They also sell refurbished drones at lower prices. DJI offers free shipping.

Drone Sky Hook offers sales, special offers, discounts and free shipping for their Release & Drop devices and other items. To receive a free gift enter this Promo Code in the Drone Sky Hook’s shopping cart: dronefishing18 (case-sensitive).

THE BOTTOM LINE

Drone fishing is the latest innovation in fishing. Take your fishing experience to the next level!

Forget about the limited application of the “in the water” fish finder, Kite fishing, Balloon fishing, Rigging, Trawling and other angling methods. Go with “above the water” drone fish finder where you can actually see the fish in the water!

I’m very happy with my drone fishing systems that include my DJI drones together with the Drone Sky Hook Release & Drop devices, Release & Drop PLUS devices, SearchLight and Fail-Safe Drop cord. My Searchlight was useful during low-light, low visibility conditions or night fishing.

Go for for the recommended Daylight & Low-Light Systems or Daylight Systems for Drone Fishing that I listed above. It elevated my drone fishing experience to new heights.

Practice on dry land and in an open area before you fly over water. Fly low and slow and get use to flying the drone with your fishing line attached. Try the Searchlight at night. Practice will make your drone fishing experience much better.

Keep in mind that carrying a heavy payload will drain the drone’s battery faster. Decrease the maximum payload weight during windy conditions and do not fly in very strong winds. DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2.0

DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 Fishing Drone Review 2022

DJI is the world’s leader in the production of drone and aerial photography devices. Today we are going to share with you a review of a new drone by this company called DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2.0. We will cover the most important features of this drone, and explain how they compare to other models.

It is a new version of a great drone, it is waterproof and has a lot of features. It also has a very attractive price tag.

Table of Contents

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is the best overall drone for fishing. It has a high-resolution 3-axis motorized gimbal and 20MP CMOS sensor to eliminate rolling shutter distortion, which results in sharp photos.

The best features for this drone are the intelligent flight modes. With them you can get exactly what you need out of the drone, whether it’s speed, ease of use, or smoothness.

The camera is easy to use. The shutter is distortion-free. Landing gear is easy to rig. It’s powerful enough to launch a fishing bait. However, it is not suitable for long-term use due to the lack of a payload. The DJI Phantom Pro is the best of its kind. If you are interested in drone fishing and want more information, I have written a detailed article on the best drones for fishing just click Here .

Whether you’re into water sports, hiking, camping or just enjoying time in the outdoors, the new HD Drone is the best choice for you. Its impressive 1080p resolution and 11 mile flight range let you capture stunning images and video.

Best Features of DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0

There are many reasons why the DJI Phantom 4 remains a favorite. In fact, there are many things that make it a good choice for anyone, from beginners to experts. Here are the top 10 reasons why you should consider the Phantom 4 Pro for your next drone project.

Some of the top ten reasons why the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 remains a favorite for many drone pilots is that it was made to be a favorite.

It’s the one and only drone that can do it all. If you want the most affordable solution for aerial videography, look no further.

Although DJI drones are excellent, the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is the best drone in the market at the moment. It can do it all and will perform time after time.

There are ten great reasons why the aging DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is the best drone for you.

Weatherproof

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro can handle high winds, even if that means the motors are strong enough to fly through the rain, as you can see in this video of racing sailboats being captured from above.

As long as you avoid getting it wet, this is a cool drone that you can fly in the rain.

Excellent Camera

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 has a 24mm, f/2.8-f/11 lens and a 1-inch CMOS sensor, which gives it a picture quality that rivals professional photography. It also shoots 4K video at 60fps / 100Mbps and can take 20MP photos with a dynamic range.

The DJI Phantom allows you to shoot video in D-Log mode and H.265 codec for very crisp and professional-looking video footage, easily beating what comes out of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. It’s the best drone for commercial applications because it features a mechanical shutter that eliminates the rolling shutter effect, and it’s also super easy to fly thanks to its built-in GPS

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 has a great range and connectivity thanks to its ability to use the OcuSync 2.0 HD transmission that will provide a stable and reliable connection. This will allow you to fly your drone safely in almost all situations.

When it comes to the drone market, this is a must-read. It shows you the legal limitations of the drone market, and it provides you with a range of almost 5 miles, which is beyond the legal restrictions from the FAA.

More Flight Time

Drone flights of about 30 minutes are possible, thanks to the new batteries that the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 offers. They still have an outstanding flight time but give you the time to place the drone where you need it most. To try and capture complex video scenes over and over until you get it right.

Great Stability

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 offers a very stable aerial platform when capturing still imagery or videos. In windy or rainy conditions or at high altitudes. The DJI Phantom 4 V2.0 is able to provide you with a stable aerial platform that allows you to create the amazing still images or videography you need.

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is the best off-the-shelf, affordable drone that delivers just as well as the professional drones we work with.

Easy to fly

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is very safe and easy to fly a quadcopter. It’s one of the easiest to fly drones on the market because it’s so responsive to pilot input and has the new version of DJI’s DJI Go 4 app, along with OcuSync 2.0 and five direction obstacle sensing.

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is a must-have drone for any beginning drone enthusiast to advance to an expert pilot. Not all drones will allow you to advance to being a professional drone pilot.

Intelligent Flight Modes

The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is the best drone for beginners are from DJI because they make flying drones easy. The company’s Smart features make them better than other drones. They include intelligent flight modes.

These are all very nice features but my favorite Intelligent Flight Mode is the Return to Home feature. This enables you to hit a single button to bring the drone home quickly and safely.

Easily Repairable

This is a pretty good list. As a professional pilot, I’d say the drone you should buy is the DJI Phantom 4 . It’s the most popular drone in the market and it’s an excellent choice for almost everyone. You won’t need to worry about any repairs or replacements.

Even if this drone is badly damaged it will still get started and fly. But you should avoid flying a damaged drone. The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 can be repaired very easily.

User-Friendly Systems

Drones are the best way to capture aerial footage and with the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2. 0 it’s easy to capture cinematic video. The drone is big, but its controls and the remote controller make it an easy-to-use device for shooting smooth videos.

It’s easier to hand catch the aircraft, and the larger remote controller makes it easier to fly for people with larger hands or even with gloves on. The controller is easy to grasp, and the buttons are easy to find and press.

Attitude Control

With the DJI Phantom 4 Pro 2.0, there’s a dedicated Attitude Control switch on the controller. It allows you to quickly take manual control of the aircraft if you fly into a GPS interference zone or if the flight is not controlled by GPS.

The ATTI mode is such a helpful feature because you don’t have to dig into the menu system, but can easily flick the switch to activate the ATTI mode. This makes the drone that much safer to fly because it has fewer buttons and dials.

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is back After Discontinuation

The Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is back. A year after announcing that due to “a shortage of parts” DJI would no longer be able to produce its Phantom drones, DJI has brought the lineup back from the dead and is once again selling the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0

Even though this is a really good deal if you happen to be interested in drones, I don’t think many people will be looking for this, even if it is on sale. There is a gap between the consumer-grade Mavic series and the more expensive Inspire series.

But while the return of the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 means you now have two options with essentially identical specs—the Mavic 2 Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro go blow-for-blow in almost every category—you can choose the form factor you prefer best.

According to a statement made by DJI on the relaunch of the Phantom 4 Professional, the drone was never discontinued. It was discontinued because of a “shortage of parts” from a supplier. “DJI sets high standards for the extremely advanced components in our products, which require advanced lead time and technical precision to manufacture,” reads the statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers, and we thank them for their patience as we ensure the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 will continue to meet their high expectations.” The real question now is: does that mean there will be a Phantom 5?

DJI Mavic 2 Pro vs Phantom 4 Pro V2.0: which is the best drone for you?

Both of these DJI drones are outstanding and offer an amazing amount of quality and features, but which one will perform best for you? The DJI Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 may have both arrived in same year, but they feel like they’re from very different eras.

The release of the DJI Mavic Air 2 Pro was a huge surprise, but with the return of the DJI Phantom series and more than 20 million units sold, it feels like the Phantom lineup isn’t taking a back seat anymore.

If you want a drone for beginners or if you don’t need to fly frequently, the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is the best drone. It’s easy to learn, has a powerful camera, and offers great speed and range.

When you first look at the drones, the answer seems pretty obvious –The Mavic 2 Pro Fly More bundle is a very good deal, and it comes with two more batteries, a carrying case, a charger hub, spare propellers, and some other things. It’s almost as good as the Phantom’s kit.

But it’s only once you start looking closer at what both drones have to offer in the camera department that the continued relevance of the Phantom series quickly becomes plain to see.

Best drones are those that can fly longer distances, take better pictures, have higher resolution, and give you more control.

As a drone camera, the Phantom 4 Pro V2 .0 is more robust than the Mavic 2 Pro. This version of the drone also has a larger capacity battery, making it easier to fly for longer periods of time. The Mavic’s controller is a little smaller, and the Mavic’s drone has a tablet docking feature.

With the new Mavic 2 Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 , both have a totally different look and feel to them. The Phantom takes its cue from DJI’s traditional drone design, but the Mavic 2 Pro has an all-new look.

From above, the Phantom is an X-shape with two arms, both with propellors at the end. The drone sits on two tall feet that can be detached to use them as antennas or folded flat for transportation. It has a camera and gimbal mounted in the middle.

It’s the Mavic 2 Pro which is lighter, slimmer and smaller than the Phantom 4 Pro. It weighs 875g and measures 2.12mm. In terms of camera size, image quality and features, the Mavic 2 Pro is a better drone than the Phantom 4 Pro.

Compared to the Mavic 2 Pro, the DJI Osmo Action has much more advanced features. In addition to being much smaller and lighter, it also comes with the ability to fold. You can pack all the accessories for this camera in your pocket when folded.

It’s dramatic difference between the Phantom 4 Pro drone itself, and the controller is not only large, but white and designed with a holding compartment for a smartphone or tablet.

By contrast, the Mavic 2 Pro’s controller is much smaller and lighter, with folding wings that hold a smartphone at the bottom of the controller. There are a few more direct access controls and a handy LCD screen that provides useful drone and flight information, which the Phantom controller lacks.

As we said at the beginning, there is no perfect drone. It all depends on what you want to do with your drone, your skill level, the type of terrain you want to fly, your budget, and so on and so forth. The DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 might not be the perfect drone for everyone, but it’s definitely the perfect drone for most people in most situations. There is no doubt about it. What do you think about the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 ? What drone would you pick if you could only pick one? What do you like or dislike about the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 ? Table of Contents

Updated june 2019.

In drone fishing, it seems that there is a great competition between DJI and SwellPro. And this competition does not seem to end very soon. This is even though DJI does not produce drones for fishing in the first place. But still, the competition is there. So we decided to make a Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+ comparison for you.

Around the world, many anglers are using their drones for fishing since it can take out their baits to places they couldn’t reach out to. However, there are certain risks when trying to do that. These risks “created” the famous competition of DJI Phantom 4 VS SplashDrone 3.

So, if you are about to buy a drone for fishing, I will start telling you, that no matter what you choose, each drone has clear advantages over the other. There is no right or wrong about this. It is about what else do you need from your drone.

By the end of this post, I will help you decide which drone will be the best fishing drone for you.

As a side note, we, at Finish-Tackle, prefer to use the SwellPro SplashDrone 3+ drone for fishing. And we, like many others, have many good reasons for it.

SwellPro Splash Drone 3 Fishing - Great experience

However, many other people chose the DJI Phantom 4 drone, over the SplashDrone 3+, for their fishing tasks.

Drone Fishing DJI Phantom

Before you dive in

Before continuing to read this post, I want you to stop for a second and think about what do you need a drone for. List all the things you need. And I mean everything. And don’t think that writing fishing is a need. Because even in fishing the drone needs to do different things. So make sure you write it all down.

Then, after you will finish reading this post, you can go over your list and check which drone can serve you better.

And, in case you were wondering why I only chose to do the Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+. This is since I already compared all the good drones I know for fishing .

Phantom 4 VS SplashDrone 3+

Getting into the interesting part…

After thinking about this, I decided that first I will write down the advantages of SwellPro SplashDrone 3+ over the DJI Phantom 4. Then I will write down the advantages of the DJI Phantom 4 over the SplashDrone 3+. This way I am letting you decide which one is better for your specific needs.

Clear Advantages of the SwellPro SplashDrone 3+

The biggest issue around this debate is with the ability of the drone to be protected from the water. And as such, you won’t be losing your drone in the middle of the sea, or in a lake.

This specific issue was the main reason for the foundation of the SwellPro company. SwellPro is the pioneer of waterproof drones. This makes it the main reason why lots of people buy their drones, especially for their fishing tasks. But being waterproof is not the only main reason. SwellPro’ drones also float over water and it can even flip back in case it got flipped in the water by a wave.

  • SplashDrone 3+ is a 100% waterproof drone
  • The SplashDrone 3+ floats over the water.
  • In case it got flip by a wave, the SplashDrone 3+ can flip back.
  • Can land and take off from the water.
  • The drone is not only Ready to Fly (RTF), it is also Ready to Fish. So, you don’t need to get any third-party device to use it for fishing.
  • The remote control of the SplashDrone 3+ is the only thing you need in order to fully operate. You don’t need your phone for it.

In general, the four first advantages that I have listed are the main advantages of any SwellPro drone over any DJI drone. So of course, when we compare the Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+, these features are the main things we notice.

SplashDrone 3 in the middle of the sea

Other advantages of the SwellPro SplashDrone 3+

Payload release device to drop baits.

Among the features which the SplashDrone 3+ is well known for is for its’ payload release device. This payload release device is having a built-in 4K camera that directs you where exactly you should drop your bait. The control over this payload release device is being done at the remote control of the drone.

Phantom 4, on the other hand, does not have such a device, since it is not a fishing drone by its nature. However, several companies (not DJI) developed their own version for a payload release, allowing the Phantom 4 to drop a bait in the middle of the sea and by that operate as a fishing drone.

There are many good companies for that. Some of them are using the same methods to operate the device, and some has developed their own unique way to work.

But remember! Since it was not developed by DJI, there are several issues around the payload release device. Here are most of the issues with it:

Disadvantages of the third parties payload release

  • They are not located precisely at the center of the drone, causing the drone not to be balanced in the air.
  • The payload release has a weight that the drone needs to carry. Which means it will be draining your battery faster and your flight time. This will require you to consider the remaining weight that the drone can carry. A Phantom 4 can carry out 500 grams. So, assuming the payload release weights 100 grams. That leaves you with a maximum weight of 400 grams.
  • Most devices are using a light sensor, which basically blocks one of the lights of the drone, so it can trigger the device when to drop the bait. This reduces your ability to use the drone when there are not good light conditions.
  • The payload release device needs to be installed at the center of the drone (to keep the drone balanced in the air), however, this is where the camera is located – for the same reason of balance. Hence, some of the devices will block your view or won’t be located at the center.
  • These devices have their own battery, which requires you to charge them before you use them. Forgetting to charge the device is a great risk and a serious problem when taking out your lines out, since, if the payload release won’t work, you will need to return your drone with all the line out. The line can get into your props, can hurt people on its way back, or can get stuck at obstacles causing your drone to crash. Your other option is to return the drone while reeling in your line, however, that needs to be done with a lot of caution, so you won’t reel in too fast which will also cause the drone to crash.

SwellPro’s developed their special payload release device

On the other hand, SwellPro has developed a dedicated payload release device which is part of their drone. The payload release device has its own camera next to it. Assuring that your view is not blocked. Your battery is not draining faster, so when saying that the drone’s flight time is 20 minutes. It is 20 minutes even while the payload release is mounted.

SplashDrone 3+ Payload Release with 4K camera

Can carry heavy baits

Another advantage is the maximum weight that the drone can carry. The SplashDrone 3+ can carry out for you 1Kg of bait. Even thou some people use it to carry more than 1 kilogram of baits, but it is not recommended. Phantom 4, on the other hand, can carry up to 500 grams.

Is It all about the money?

Another advantage of the SplashDrone 3+ is its price. The basic platform costs 1,200$ and with the payload release and its 4K camera, it will cost you 1,560$. Currently, the Phantom 4 costs 1,500$ and that is without any additional accessory you will need in order to use it for fishing. Some payload release devices will cost you around 200$ and if you would like to protect it against water (which I will describe later) you will need to pay an additional 240$, which will sum to up 1,940$. So it’s a difference of almost 400$.

Modular is good

Last but not least, the SplashDrone 3+ is modular, which means that SwellPro offers you several different accessories to choose from. And according to your needs, you can mount your desired accessory according to your need at a specific moment. SwellPro offers you 2 different cameras and 3 different payload release devices to choose from.

Important notes about the SplashDrone 3+

Since the SplashDrone 3+ is using only its GPS to position itself in the air, it is still very stable in the air. Compared to many other drones that are using only a GPS to position themselves, the SplashDrone 3+ is locked in the air, keeping itself stable.

Advantages of the DJI Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+

The Phantom 4, in general, is an awesome drone, and most probably you don’t need me to tell you that. So, after pointing out the advantages of the SplashDrone 3+, it is time to say what are the advantages of the Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+.

But before we start writing them all down, this is where your list, which I told you to write down earlier, will come handy. Do you know why?

Some people, and might be that even you will want to use the drone not only for fishing. Drones are great for many different things. And one popular reason to use drones for is filming. So, when we look at the Phantom 4 we will indicate advantages that are not necessarily related to fishing.

Clear advantages of the DJI Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+

  • The transmission range of the Phantom 4 is 7 kilometers.
  • According to DJI, it has approximate of 30 minutes, however, keep in mind that when using a payload release, it will drain your battery time, not mentioning that if you will need other accessories for fishing like the Phantom Rain Wetsuits or the Rescue Jacket , it will drain the battery even faster.
  • The DJI Phantom 4 is using an infrared sensing system in order to prevent itself from colliding into obstacles like walls, trees, humans and etc.
  • The stabilization of the Phantom 4 is set not only by using its GPS but also by using a downward positioning system.

Other advantages of the Phantom 4

There is a great support community around the DJI company, which means that you can find solutions to any problem you will have with your drones.

You can find so many groups on Facebook that support DJI drones that I don’t believe you will be left without an answer in case you will need one.

One issue that causes many people to get disappointed from drones it’s being crashed with no special reason. Purchasing a defective product can happen, but it is causing the customer to feel uncomfortable with the situation. Just the thought about arguing with the company for your justice makes people desperate from it.

With DJI Care , DJI promise to their customers that in case of a drone’s failure, the customer can send its drone back to them. And in case DJI will find that the drone has crashed due to a defective or malfunction reason, they will send you a new drone back to the customer.

Here is what DJI is saying about this on their website:

DJI Care is a service plan that provides you with peace of mind, covering damage to your DJI aircraft, gimbal or camera sustained during normal use.

Is the DJI Phantom 4 waterproof?

I will first say No. The Phantom 4 is not waterproof. And as noted before, this is a clear advantage of the SplashDrone 3+ over the Phantom 4.

To resolve this issue, Phantom Rain, developed their fantastic product called the Phantom Rain Wetsuits . The Phantom Rain Wetsuits is protecting your Phantom 4 from water and makes it water-resistant. Not waterproof, but water-resistant.

Phantom 4 can float over water

Another clear advantage of the SplashDrone 3+ is since it floats over water. So, Phantom Rain resolved this issue as well. Phantom Rain developed the Rescue Jacket . The Rescue Jacket makes the Phantom floats over water no matter how it falls into the water.

When combining these two products, the Wetsuits, and the Rescue Jacket, it protects your Phantom 4 form the water. It basically even lets you land (slowly) your Phantom 4 over the water and fly it again.

Phantom Rain Wetsuits and Rescue Jacket

Deciding on a fishing drone is a very important decision. You should think well before spending a decent amount of money on it.

For me, after being asked so many times which drone will be the best one for the task, I have decided to compare for you the most known drones for it. But after I noticed that many people were just comparing the Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+, so I have written all the reasons for each one, hoping that it will make it easy for you to decide.

I would say that, If you are after a long-distance filming drone, and most of the time you won’t be using your drone around water, go with the Phantom 4 drone. Just make sure to get the right accessories for it.

However, if you are not interested in sending your drone way far away, and you want to have a peace of mind when using the drone next to the water (for fishing or filming), it will be a smart decision to go with the SplashDrone 3+.

In terms of drones’ production, SwellPro has gone a long way, especially in the past couple of years. I can say that currently, their drones are very stable and reliable. And, as someone who is in the drones’ hobby for quite some time, I did not hear any bad experience with their drones lately. Choosing the SplashDrone is a good pick and you won’t get disappointed from it.

Do you still have questions about which drone to choose? What do you think about our comparison of the Phantom 4 vs SplashDrone 3+?
