Blennerhassett Island to have episode on “Ghost Hunters” – WTAP

PARKERSBURG, W.Va . (WTAP) – Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is seeing more coverage come out for its potentially paranormal activity.
The island will be the focus of an episode of “Ghost Hunters.”
The show will be looking into the claims of supernatural experiences happening on the island.
Everything from sights of Native Americans — including Delaware Nation chief, Nemacolin — to findings of a little girl in the mansion often seen by children visiting the state park.
The state park’s superintendent, Craig Pyles says that this episode has the potential to bring in more tourism to the area.
Including with how paranormal tourism has worked for other areas in West Virginia and the Mid-Ohio Valley.
“Paranormal tourism is a growing field,” says Pyles. “We just have to look to the south of Parkersburg to Point Pleasant with the Moth Man and how much tourism that brings in there. Marietta with the meeting of two rivers has a lot of spiritual energy, they say. So, that brings people into Marietta, people coming into Parkersburg for paranormal experiences. And it’s just on a growing tourism market that the state and the Blennerhassett Island is tapping into.”
You can see the “Ghost Hunters” episode this Saturday at 9 p.m. on the Travel Channel.

CNN values your feedback
The cast of ‘living for the dead’ have their own ghost stories.

Ghost stories are getting new life in the upcoming Hulu series “Living for the Dead.”
Executive produced by Kristen Stewart and the creators of “Queer Eye,” the show features five LGBTQ+ ghost hunters, each with their own unique talent, traveling the country to investigate the paranormal.
According to the official synopsis from Hulu, the show aims to “explore some of the world’s most infamous haunted locations,” and “shed light on those not seen.”
Rob Eric, one of the shows producers, recently spoke with CNN about how Stewart came to them with the idea.
“We got a phone call from our agents that Kristen wanted to meet on a project and we were like, yeah, it’s Kristen Stewart, so then she got on and told us that she had this idea that what would it be like to have a ghost-hunting show that had an LGBTQ cast,” Eric said. “And we are the ‘Queer Eye’ guys. We know the way that our community sort of sees things is different than other communities and we’ve never seen this before and wouldn’t that be interesting.”
Eric said they met with Stewart, created a format, then set out to cast the show. They landed on ghost hunters Alex Le May, Juju Bae, Ken Boggle, Logan Taylor, and Roz Hernandez, who each have paranormal specialties.

Boggle, who is a medium and tarot cards expert, told CNN his most terrifying moment filming happened while they were investigating strange activity at The Clown Motel in Nevada, featured in one of the episodes.
“I am terrified of clowns and so my teammates, my friends, decided that we would go to this Clown Motel and that they would put me blindfolded in a room of clowns in the dark,” he said.
Bae, a witch, said she developed her intuitive strengths with practice.
“I actually developed this in my adulthood. Like, I wasn’t a kid talking to spirits or really into the woo woo at all. This is something that I was intentional about,” she said.
While filming, Bae said she got physically scratched by a spirit in Arizona.
“I go to sleep, I wake up and there’s just three scratches down my neck into my chest,” she recalled.
Taylor, who describes himself as “the psychic of the group,” told CNN he also had physical encounters with ghosts.
“There were places that I got my hair pulled,” Taylor said of filming the series. “There was actually a moment where I kind of got grabbed. I’m used to seeing them [ghosts], hearing them, but when they start touching me, it was scary. I’m telling you, it would make any skeptic a believer.”
Hernandez, who was cast due to the success of their paranormal comedy podcast, “Ghosted,” owns up to being ghost “obsessed.”
“I feel like the luckiest fan of these shows ever,” Hernandez told CNN. “Now I get to be in one and sort of be a little skeptical and try to get down to the bottom of what’s going on there.”
Le May, a “paranormal investigator,” was excited about analyzing supernatural incidents and sharing their findings.
“The scariest scene for me was when I crawled into where they kept the bodies in a morgue by myself and had a lovely conversation with a malevolent spirit,” Le May recalled. “But I really, really ate it up. I thought it was a blast, and I got so much good evidence out of that.”
Of the naysayers, Le May said “for people who are skeptics, I tell them to book a night at The Clown Motel and stay in room 111.”
“Living for the Dead” streams on Hulu starting Oct 18.

Spirits roam these halls - Haunted Blennerhassett captures local ghost stories
PARKERSBURG, W.Va . (WTAP) - The Blennerhassett Hotel is 133 years old and it has the ghost stories to prove it. They’re what spawned the creation of the Haunted Blennerhassett program.
Haunted Blennerhassett Founder Adra Johnson said of the hotel, “We were actually named ‘Most Haunted in West Virginia’ by Thrillest this year, which is super exciting….number six most haunted hotel in North America by Country Living.”
Inspired by her own paranormal experiences at the hotel, Johnson founded the Haunted Blennerhassett program, kicking it into gear this year.
One of the activities it offers is ghost tours.
“So my monthly tour is an hour. If I were to go into every little thing that has happened in every location, it would at least be three or four hours,” Johnson said.
The tours aren’t just about stories. During the second half, participants get the chance to use ghost hunting equipment.
“What’s interesting to me is that we always pick something up. We always do, whereas the Ghost Hunters shows, they sometimes film for days at a time and sometimes don’t get anything…,” Johnson said.
She’s seen it turn doubters into believers.
“The most satisfying thing to me is when someone is a little bit skeptical or not into it the first half during the actual tour and then we start the equipment and you can just see their face change. You can see it light up as they start getting those interactions,” Johnson said.
Haunted Blennerhassett isn’t just tours. The fourth floor will be locked down for a paranormal investigation in March. Johnson said it will be led by professional paranormal investigators.
In that same month, the hotel will host the Appalachian ParaCon.
Tickets for both the ParaCon and the March investigation will go on sale starting on Halloween. Call the hotel to order.
If you’re interested in tour tickets, give the hotel a call at 304-422-3131. It costs $20 and is for those 16 and older.
You have the option of booking an overnight stay with your ghost tour package as well.

In a new Hulu series, five fabulous ghost hunters are truly 'Living for the Dead'
Posted: October 18, 2023 | Last updated: October 18, 2023
Thanks to reality shows like the long-running “Ghost Hunters” series, which aired its 16th season this year, paranormal work has had a particularly heteronormative image for the last few decades. But the new, cheekily named Hulu series “Living for the Dead” — which is narrated and executive produced by Kristen Stewart — is serving up supernatural storytelling with a different kind of hair-raising look, courtesy of its five fabulous ghost-hunting stars.
Emmy-winning “Queer Eye” producer Rob Eric, who serves as an executive producer on “Living for the Dead,” recalled initially being approached about the idea.
“A call was made to us that said Kristen Stewart wanted to talk about a show idea, and she got on and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if we could do something different, like gay ghost hunters?’ And we were like, ‘Gay ‘Scooby-Doo’?! We’re in,’” Eric said during a junket with the cast, ahead of the full season release Wednesday.
In the series, the queer ghost hunters take a road trip across the country, hitting the scenic highways of the American Southwest and weaving their way up to the Great Lakes region, to make overnight visits at eight allegedly haunted locations. Armed with an array of skills — including psychic sense, witchy ways and equipment expertise — the paranormal professionals give the spaces a kind of spiritual glow up by communing with the ghosts that haunt their dwellings and the living that inhabit them.
Some of the locations, like a sprawling former sanatorium in Kentucky called Waverly Hills and the Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, are apparently well known in the paranormal community. But others, like a modern Arizona mansion with a cagey young owner and a Las Vegas strip club overseen by a protective matriarch, are more off the ghost-hunting grid. But they’re all, according to the show’s stars, verifiably infested with otherworldly beings.
“Honey, there were no duds! They made sure where they sent us was haunted as can be,” Logan Taylor, the show’s resident psychic, said. “I remember, by the very end of it, I would go to bed at night just completely used to hearing screaming — blood-curdling screaming as I’m trying to sleep.”
Alex LeMay, the group’s tech guru, agreed.
“They were very, very, very haunted and very active, and it never stopped, even when the cameras weren’t rolling,” LeMay said, citing eerie disturbances like things being thrown in the middle of the night. “I think it would turn any skeptic into a believer, just staying one night at some of the places we investigated.”
Like the rest of the group — which is rounded out by Juju Bae, a self-described witch, and Ken Boggle, a tarot card specialist — researcher Roz Hernandez has worked in the paranormal field for years. But she said that staying put in the locations overnight proved challenging between all the foot tickling and other invasive activity going on in the wee hours.
“The ghosts did not clock out because the cameras weren’t rolling. They were there to play with our toes or do whatever they wanted to do, and I hated it,” she said in response to her castmates teasing her about trying to sneak away to hotels in the middle of the night.
She said she’s been watching ghost-hunting shows for years and has “given them a lot of side-eye,” but now she can better relate to how unnerving visiting a series of well-researched, spooky spaces can be.
“I’ve been, like, ‘Come on, you mean to tell me, every place you go, there’s stuff happening?’ But it is sort of like a casting process. We have to make sure that these are places that truly are in need of an investigation, and they did not disappoint — any of them,” she said.
Though the group reportedly had a bevy of unsettling supernatural encounters during filming, their run-ins with the living residents of the haunted locations were much more to their liking. In several episodes, the “ghost hunties” — to borrow the series’ promo language — even take a break from engaging with spirits to have cocktails and a spooky kiki with the locals. During these rendezvous, the experts didn’t encounter much skepticism from their new friends, especially given that most of them had ghost stories of their own. But the out-of-towners were aware of not fitting the typical ghost-hunting mold.
“Listen, some of us prance into town with 6-inch heels on,” Hernandez said. “So you might be like, ‘What are these people going to achieve here?’ But we actually know what we’re doing, as much as you can when you’re talking about things that are unknown.”
To find the right people to represent the LGBTQ contingent of ghost hunters — which is smaller than one might think, according to Hernandez — the show’s producers used a casting approach they developed for the original “Queer Eye,” which premiered in 2003. Essentially, after whittling down thousands of applications to a smaller collection of finalists, they brought the top contenders to Los Angeles to watch how they interacted with each other off-camera and to test out their skills.
“One of the most important things about casting is to not always be in the casting, but to rather step back a little bit from it and see who’s talking to each other when they’re not on camera — who’s vibing,” Eric said.
Once the in-person casting began, the producer added, he and the rest of the team could see their group of stars beginning to form, and then, during one-on-ones when the interviewees were asked to show off their ghost-hunting talents, their final five pulled away from the pack. While Bae was eliciting gasps from one part of the room, Boggle gave Eric a “terrifyingly accurate” tarot card reading. And in a more secluded space, Taylor channeled the deceased father of Eric’s co-producer, “Queer Eye” creator David Collins, recalling a private moment between father and son.
“David came out of a room crying — couldn’t stop crying, and we’re like, ‘Yeah, this is the team. We did it,’” Eric said. “You can see it. They come together so beautifully in the show. It just feels like they’ve known each other forever, and, who knows, maybe in past lives, they did.”
Without the benefit of a live demonstration, some viewers may have a harder time believing in the experts’ skills — and buying into the series as a whole, which takes its supernatural encounters very seriously. Though, Eric and his co-producers attempt to bridge that gap by showing the cast performing the practical aspects of ghost hunting, much like the stars of “Queer Eye” tackle the various elements of a makeover.
“If we just had you assume that this is what Juju does to get rid of spirits, and we don’t tell you what that is, or what Ken does to contact spirits, you wouldn’t believe them. If you didn’t see JVN cutting hair, and we just showed you the final product, you’d be, like, ‘Well, wait a minute, who cut the hair?’” Eric said, referring to “Queer Eye” grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness.
Eric acknowledged that a reality series about “the woo woo,” as Bae and some of the cast amiably described paranormal work, may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But he also said that seeing people commune with ghosts isn’t entirely the point. Instead, like their “Queer Eye” counterparts, it’s witnessing the experts’ particular brand of empathy — not to mention their obvious fabulousness.
“The paranormal can be very divisive in terms of, ‘Oh, I don’t watch that, because it’s paranormal,’ or, ‘I watch it because it is paranormal.’ This show you should watch because the characters are so interesting,” Eric said.

‘Living for the Dead’: Kristen Stewart’s New Ghost-Hunting Show Is ‘Gay Scooby-Doo’
QUEER EYE FOR THE DEAD GUY
Here’s everything you need to know about “Living for the Dead,” the new series from Stewart and team behind “Queer Eye” that puts a LGBT+ spin on supernatural sleuthing.

Shannon O’Connor
Social Media Editor
You may have watched ghost-hunting shows in the past, but you have never seen anything quite like Living for the Dead .
From the brilliant minds of Kristen Stewart , her friend CJ Romero, and the folks at Scout Productions that brought us Queer Eye , Living for the Dead combines all the elements we know and love from the Netflix series (the heart, the humor and, of course, the hugs) with some spooky ghost hunting in some seriously haunted places.
“We always joked from day one that this is gay Scooby-Doo ,” executive producer Rob Eric, who also worked on both the original and rebooted Queer Eye , told The Daily Beast’s Obsessed.
And the Scooby gang in Living for the Dead does not disappoint. Juju Bae, Alex LeMay, Roz Hernandez, Logan Taylor, and Ken Boggle make up what I’ve dubbed the Paranormal Five (a supernatural twist on the Fab Five). They all bring unique talents (as well as an abundance of compassion) to the investigations, whether it’s communicating with the spirits, manning technical equipment, or doing deep spiritual readings of those most affected by the spirits in the place.
The first season of the unscripted series, which premieres on Hulu Oct. 18, finds the gang taking their ghost-hunting talents across the Midwestern United States to investigate some legendary haunted landmarks like the Clown Motel in Tonopah, Nevada, as well as some lesser-known, reportedly eerie spots like the Palomino Club in Las Vegas.
Ahead of the premiere, executive producers Rob Eric and Renata Lombardo tell Obsessed how Stewart brought the idea to them, the moment they knew they found their amazing queer Scooby Gang, and why this ghost hunting show is unlike any other.
First of all, this concept is brilliant: Queer Eye, but for paranormal hunting. Love it. I know that this was an idea that Kristen Stewart and CJ Romero came up with, but how was this pitched to you?
Eric: We got a call that Kristen Stewart and CJ had an idea, and do we want to hear it? I’m like, it’s Kristen Stewart, of course, we wanna hear it! (Laughs) It was a seedling of an idea. They were at a brunch and somebody mentioned something about a gay paranormal show, like, why don’t we have one of those? And Kristen was like, “I would fucking watch that forever.”
As would I!
Eric: Kristen was very specific on how she wanted emotion and heart and humor. And so obviously they reached out to the Queer Eye guys. We started talking about it and developed the format with her, and sort of gave away some of our trade secrets of how we create emotion and heart and humor [in Queer Eye ], and then shot the show. It was an amazing relationship. We’re still working together on other stuff, and she’s awesome. They’re both awesome.
Lombardo: We were excited about the Kristen Stewart call, but we had no idea truly the power of the celebrity of Kristen Stewart until she mentioned that she was developing the show with us in an interview. I think it was around Spencer, and it got picked up and there were so many articles that came our way. Everyone was like, “Is this you guys? What’s happening?” It just proved that there’s an undeniable stardom with Kristen.
You mentioned the heart and the humor of the show. At one point watching the screeners, I wrote down, “This is ghost therapy,” because it is such a unique and compassionate approach to the paranormal. Instead of going for scares you go in trying to not only heal the spirits, but those affected by them. How did you find this approach?
Eric: I think it was probably what we collectively—Kristen, CJ, and Scout [Productions]—bring to the paranormal, right? We’ve seen a million paranormal shows and for us it always seems like they go in and they sort of irritate the spirit in order to try to do something. We’re like, well, we should actually try to communicate a little bit more, like we do on Queer Eye . It’s not just going in and taking somebody and saying, “Hey, if you use this moisturizer to do this, you’re gonna be great,” and we walk away. There’s more interaction, there’s more character, and there’s more of a companionship between the characters—whether the character is a ghost or the person that’s trying to get rid of the ghost.
Much like finding the Fab Five, I’m sure it was a journey to find the Paranormal Five. Can you kind of walk me through the process of casting these five roles and what you were looking for in each role?
Eric: These were not people that we just pulled from obscurity and said, “Hey, you’re now a medium.” These were people that came to us. They were mediums, and they were people that were skeptics. Not only does Roz have her show about the world of paranormal, but she always is very clear [that] she’s a skeptic. We wanted that element in there as well, because I think the audience always approaches a paranormal show with a bit of skepticism, as well as interest.
Lombardo: We reference, from one end, it’s the heart [we were looking for], and on the other end, it’s like gay Scooby-Doo. We wanted to be able to live in both spaces, so we had to find talent that could walk both lines. One is being sort of serious about the craft and what they brought to the table. And the other one is that we have to have fun with this, because it’s gay camp that we didn’t want to lose in the process. Because they are gay ghost hunters, and [that’s] what makes this show distinctly different tonally from other ghost hunting shows as well.
Yes, there certainly hasn’t been a show like this before.
Eric: When we cast them, it wasn’t just video casting. We brought everybody out. We wanted to meet them in person, see how they can work together. But we also wanted to see their talent. And there were some really scary moments with all of them. Renata sat in when Ken did a reading of my cards and was so frighteningly accurate.
Lombardo: Oh yes. I had chills. Literally, he needed to grab Rob. He was like, “I need to read you,” and pulled him aside. I had chills multiple times because we work together every day. I know him fairly well. And the stuff he was saying, I was like, “How? What?” That was honestly what put him through for us.
Eric: My business partner David, he had a reading from Logan. That was bonkers... [Logan’s reading] was so specific that there was no doubt that there was some connection that he was having. David broke down because it was about his father who had passed away. But it was so connective that it wasn’t just like, “Oh, your dad says hi,” or, “Your dad’s super proud of you.” It was down to a moment that he had on his deathbed that no one would’ve known about and David’s never spoken about. And David had never met Logan before. So it was amazing.
And this was just the audition?!
Eric: Right? And then you got into the field with them and it was nonstop. You’ve got five people who, when they merge together, that communication is open. They’re open for everything. So therefore that world connects much easier for them.
Another character in the show is the locations. They are so fun and spooky and unique. What was the search like not only for the locations, but the people that were in them?
Lombardo: We sought out iconic haunted locations. We made it hard on ourselves because we could have probably just gone to one city and just done more of what we do with Queer Eye , where we hub out of one city and sort of branch out. We shot for the stars in Season 1, which was a hybrid of finding the most iconic spooky locations across basically like the western middle of the United States, and then also finding people that were associated with those locations.
Eric: And some of these places have been done before on other shows. We didn’t care.
Yeah, you do it your way.
Eric: We are doing it our way. And why is this reoccurring? Why does it keep happening in this place if all these people come to visit? What are they not doing that we should be doing? The one thing that we wanted in every location was visibility. We didn’t want to just go have our team stay in a hotel, then they just go visit the people and then we leave. Tonopah is a perfect example.
Lombardo : That’s the Clown Motel episode.
Eric: It’s a really weird little town. I think the population’s like maybe 1,500 people.
Lombardo: Because it’s such a small town, the town got wind that this gay something was there. Something gay is happening in town. ( Laughs )
Eric: We shot a sequence in the bar where we were meeting up with some town people. This beautiful moment happened where this woman—who never told us anything about this, we had no idea—brought up the fact that she was dealing with a non-binary child. As that moment was happening, I was downstairs in front of the monitor like, “Dear, sweet baby Jesus, let’s just keep going here.” Because this is that conversation that we don't normally see in paranormal shows, but we also don’t normally see in small towns like this.
It was a really amazing moment.
Eric: And that woman who stands up [after] and she says, “I’m pansexual,” it was this coming-out party that happened and it was a really beautiful, natural thing to see. So we insisted that in every one of our shows we were having visibility in these towns. Not just for the purpose of the investigation, but also the purpose of we’re a very large crew of LGBTQIA+ people. We need to be seen.
I love Kristen Stewart’s narration. It really brings a whole fun, campy layer to the show. How did you come to the decision to include narration, and was Kristen always going to be the voice of it?
Eric: Kristen was always the voice. We talked about it. I think it was Renata’s idea actually from day one.
Lombardo: She’s got such a great voice and such a distinct voice. And we talked a lot at the beginning about, how do you get Kristen’s DNA in the series without Kristen being on the show? So, conceptually it was always sort of like Kristen’s like the Charlie of the Charlie’s Angels. So that's sort of where it started.
Eric: And she’s a perfectionist. In the booth, I remember sitting in one of the sessions where she was just like, “I don't like the way I said that. Let me say it this way. What if I say it like this? What if I bring it here?” Super collaborative. Kristen cares deeply about this show and the people that we’re helping on the show. She wanted every element to be right, and when her voice is essentially the lead thing you hear on the show, she wanted to be just perfect.
Lombardo: And keep watching. You may see her, but in the time being, you’ll hear her.
