Visit Bali’s ghost palace: The abandoned ghost hotel

The abandoned Bali ghost hotel is definitely a different Bali experience !  This deserted resort in Bedugul had been on my must-do list for a while. Exploring a deserted luxury resort in Bali that is slowly being claimed by creeping vegetation – the emptiness, the creepiness, the beauty and the intrigue of a ghost hotel in Bali   was something I just had to do.

Before you travel: A couple of important things you should have before you travel:

  • Travel insurance – we don’t leave Australia without it.
  • VPN – protect your data and watch shows from home and around the world without getting those pesky regional bans. A Virtual Private Network will keep you from being hacked wherever you use WiFi.
  • Travel Safety Guide  – our 80+ page guide to planning your trip and staying safe for only $16AUD

It’s not often you get a chance to take a look into an abandoned hotel, so this time in Bali it was top of the list. The hotel is not open to the public but our driver had told us that you could make a deal with the security guard here so we were up for giving it a shot.

We set off early in the morning from Sanur for Bedugul, leaving the shopfronts, cafes and tourists behind and traveling past paddies, villages and beautiful temples, past deep green jungle and rivers as the temperature dropped and blue sky was replaced with white cloud and swirling mist.

After around 90 minutes we were there, pulling up in front of a gate made with bamboo stakes and tied together with rope. It’s actually right on the main road – I was surprised cause I thought it would be out in the middle of nowhere, but it’s really easy to find.

ghost palace hotel bali history

In we went, wandering up the drive to the hotel.  Our driver declined to come in as said he had been before, but only to the lobby where he was terrified with the sense of spirits that he would never go in again…wahh spooky! The monkey forest in Ubud is scarier to me than a ghost hotel so we continued on. A security guard/cleaner who was sweeping leaves from the drive gave us a smile and asked for a 10,000 entrance fee (around $1). Easy.   We were in.

About the abandoned hotel

The ghost hotel is an abandoned luxury resort also known as the Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel & Resort. It’s in Bedugal, the northern lakes region of Bali and was built in the 1990s.

The word is that it was being built by Tommy Suharto and a consortium of investors. If that name rings a bell it’s because Tommy is the son of the then President of Indonesia – you can read all about him here and it’s pretty mind-blowing in terms of corruption. In the late ’90s Tommy went into hiding after being convicted of an $11 million land scam and then organised the assassination of the judge that had convicted him. He was convicted of that murder in 2002 and served a few years in a luxury retreat, often being seen at his favourite golf course and around Jakarta during his internment.

Amidst all this the hotel was abandoned and still stands as it was, a testament to corruption and the dark power of privilege and nepotism.

Ghosts at the hotel

It’s said that the hotel is haunted by the ghosts of workers who died there during its construction. While I’m not a big believer of hauntings to be perfectly honest there were a few rooms there where I felt a thud in my heart and my hair stood on end and I got out of those rooms quick smart. It was very odd. There is certainly a presence there and the atmosphere is a little spooky – but of course it’s a deserted resort, it’s going to be – and that’s also part of the appeal.

The hotel grounds

The grounds at the front of the hotel certainly aren’t as overgrown as they could be so it is being maintained in some way, however at the back the resort is entirely overgrown with thick jungle all the way up to the balconies that overlook the paddies and views out to the mountains. There are pathways that we just couldn’t try. It’s quite beautiful how the greenery is creeping in and crawling its way into rooms and bathrooms.

ghost palace hotel bali history

The stairway outside leads to a beautiful candi bentar, or split gateway with serpents on either side of the staircase.

ghost palace hotel bali history

It really is beautiful and would have looked incredible in its glory…it looks amazing now covered in wild grass and creeping jungle.

Inside the ghost hotel

Walking around inside the Bali ghost hotel is awesome! It’s kind of spooky, and it’s so huge, quiet and fascinating. I wish we had stayed longer and explored every room. But we loved what we found while we snooped around.

ghost palace hotel bali history

There are lots of rooms here – some surprisingly are really small while others are huge with living areas and large private balconies. Some rooms have the electronic key swipes installed, and all have tiled bathrooms with bath (I couldn’t see any holes in the tiles for shower attachments?) and toilet , some have walk in robes. Most have spectacular views.

ghost palace hotel bali history

The lower floors are all caked in mud from the rain, and there is a lot of mould but it’s all in surprisingly good condition. There’s no evidence of squatters so security obviously does a good job keeping people out.

There’s lots of light here though although i used my Iphone torch to check out the bathrooms.

Here’s some pics of some of the guest areas – I don’t know what they would have been – maybe just a lounge/tour desk area

The staircases were pretty amazing too:

It’s so sad that it didn’t get to reach it’s grandness, and I’m sure locals were expecting to have many tourists to help with their businesses. A restaurant next to the resort looks like it too is abandoned. I’m sure the owner thought lots of guests were coming his way.

Other interesting things to do in Bali:

This was one of my favourite things to do in Bali, and I would love to go back and see if it has changed.

Check out all these f un and interesting activities in Bali  like:

Mount Batur: Private Sunrise Jeep Tour and Natural Hot Spring

Ayung River and Whitewater rafting

Swim with manta rays in Nusa Penida

How to get there

It’s pretty easy  to find the Bali ghost hotel – either take your scooter or hire a driver. You can find directions in google maps – just use ‘Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel Restaurant’. This is the address: P.I. Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel Restoran, Batunya, Baturiti, Kabupaten Tabanan, Bali 82191, Indonesia

It’s on the main road on the right hand side as you drive up the mountain about 10 minutes before the Lake Temple. If you take a car your driver will likely know how to find it.

Where to stay

If you’re keen to stay in a fancy resort that is not deserted while you explore the ghost hotel  check out the Padma Resort & Spa Ubud and other resorts we love include The Padma Resort & Spa Legian , the Hard Rock Hotel Kuta , and the Westin Nusa Dua.

Visit The ‘Ghost Palace’: An Abandoned Hotel In Bali

Are you game to visit the ‘Ghost Palace’ hotel in Bali? The abandoned Bedugul Taman Hotel has a mysterious history and is now open to the public for adventurous explorations. The Bedugul abandoned hotel is one of Bali’s most famous abandoned sites. Located in the mountains of Bedugul, the hotel was built in the 1990s but was never fully completed. It was meant to be a luxury resort with stunning views of Lake Buyan, but due to financial difficulties and legal disputes, the project was abandoned.

VISITING THE ABANDONED BEDUGUL HOTEL: GHOST PALACE

With one day free in Bali before heading off on an adventure, what do you do? The obvious answer is to rent a cheap surfboard, enjoy the beach and have a beer at sunset. But that’s all a little too cliche for me.

Our plan was to head north to the ‘Ghost Palace’, an abandoned hotel in Bedugul, Bali also known as the Bedugul Taman Hotel. We crammed on a moped as you do in Bali and weaved our way through traffic from Kuta all the way to Bedugul in just over an hour. We had read a little about the abandoned hotel in Bali but there was no concrete information on if there was security, risks, or even… ghosts.

Today the ‘Ghost Palace is overrun by vines, bushes, trees, and moss. The elegant tile floors are now smeared with mud, moss, and puddles. The walls are covered in spider webs and vines.

As we walked through the huge property we noticed the fittings were never completed and many finishes were left undone. This led us to believe the hotel was in fact never opened as we had read and that the construction was abruptly aborted.

To give you an idea of just how big the property is I flew the drone overhead, although the conditions in the middle of the day weren’t great for aerial photography.

How to get into the ‘Ghost Palace’ Hotel, Bali

In the past, people have jumped over the back fence, which is in fairness hardly a fence and more of a barrier from the adjacent road. From there you can wander down to the hotel and explore. However, there is security and they are charging 10,000 IDR at the entrance. To put things into perspective you can pay $1 and walk through the front gate and shake the hand of the security guard or jump the back fence and dodge the security for two hours as he patrols the property. We paid the dollar.

They had no issue with us bringing drones, and cameras and running around the hotel for over two hours. In fact, once we were in they didn’t bother us at all. Only a few other couples ventured onto the property while we were there during the middle of the day. Access during the night may be different and also a little spookier.

The coolest parts about the hotel were the following:

  • The giant stone serpents on either side of the staircase in the garden, were overgrown by trees and bushes. This is an epic stairway to the roof area.
  • We found a live snake, live frogs, fish, giant spiders, and lizards.
  • Moss-covered floors that folded back like a carpet
  • Huge dining room and entertaining area on the top floor with beautiful marble tiles
  • The eeriest part was the cellar area or the downstairs. Here the floor was covered in sand a few inches deep and a light shone down only through cracks. If you dared me to spend the night down there I might wet myself.
  • Beautiful hotel rooms with walk-out balconies overlooking the mountains and some rice-paddies

Exploring The Ruins Of Bali’s Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel

by Richard Collett | Feb 25, 2018 | ABANDONED PLACES , Indonesia | 0 comments

Ghost Palace Abandoned Hotel Bali

I explored the ruins of the abandoned Ghost Palace hotel in Bali!

It’s safe to say that  Bali  is a pretty well established holiday destination. The Indonesian island is popular with tourists looking for a piece of South East Asia where they can relax, party or surf.  I wasn’t interested in any of these pursuits though on my last visit- well, maybe a few Bintangs were drunk- and you might ask why I decided to travel here if I wasn’t going to sit on a beach or surf some waves. I was here because I was interested in getting off the beaten track. I was here to explore the ruins of the abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel in Bali .

The Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

The PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel and Resort- otherwise known as the Ghost Palace Hotel- is a haunting concrete shell that never opened its doors to guests.

The ‘Ghost Palace’ as this abandoned hotel has become known to the few travellers who venture inside to explore the dark corridors is found on the winding mountainous road to Bedugal Lake, just a few kilometres from the infamous tourist exclave of Kuta. But unlike the hotels of Kuta, the Ghost Palace doesn’t take reservations.

Having heard urban legends of the resort’s demise and rumours of its forlorn and haunting remains on the mountainside I knew I had to explore its abandoned remnants, to see what clues I could unearth of its downfall and subsequent turn to Balinese legend.

Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

Gaining Entrance To The Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel

I set off from Kuta on a scooter, weaving through the dense traffic of Bali and navigating the busy, winding lanes which led towards the mountains.

The Ghost Palace is situated in beautiful surroundings. Nearby is Lake Bedugal, and from the resort’s high elevation there are sweeping views across forest, rice fields and towards the imposing shape of Gunung Agung, Bali’s most famous volcano.

At the forlorn entrance to the hotel I was met by a rudimentary barricade blocking the wide, grand accessway into the compound. Two ‘Security Guards’ lazing by the side of the road said that it was closed. Unless I had 10,000 Rupiah for a ‘Ticket’.

With my ‘Ticket’ purchased, they pulled away the logs and barbed wire that blocked the entrance, and told me to park the scooter by the main entrance, a place intended for valets to greet guests.

Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

A Hotel That Never Opened Its Doors

Finding information on the Ghost Palace is a challenge at best. Rumours abound on the internet. But that’s all they are. Rumours. Most sources I’ve encountered theorise that the most realistic story regarding its construction and subsequent abandonment are linked to a man named Tommy Suharto .

Tommy is the son of the former Indonesian President. A businessman jailed for corruption and murder. He is linked to the investment of the project, which then supposedly fell through when he was jailed in 2002. The same year that construction was halted.

Wilder rumours abound online that the workers simply disappeared one day, vanishing into thin air.

None of these sources can be verified, and the rumours and legends are continually expanding and being provoked by more unverified sources.

It simply seems that nobody, at least nobody willing to talk, knows the full extent or circumstances of the events that led to the abandonment of the hotel.

All that is known, is reflected in the hotels now commonly used name, ‘The Ghost Palace’. This is a place that people associate with ghosts, curses and death, whichever story you choose to believe.

With few facts to go by, I walked up the concrete steps and into the main foyer of this Ghost Palace, to be greeted by yellow warning tape and empty reception desks.

Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

Exploring The Ghost Palace Hotel

The hotel was a grand project. Its location alone would surely price the land at a premium for investors. The empty rooms overlook volcanos and forests, offering spectacular views acros the entire island and ideal vantage points for sunset and sunrise.

The rooftop terraces could have teemed with guests and tourists looking for grand visatas and evening cocktails, while the suites and bedrooms were large and accomodating.

Despite its now overgrown, decaying look, these suites and bedrooms still look as if they were fully completed. Windows and doors are in place, electric wire hangs from the ceiling and bathtubs lie dirty and moulding. The structure is there, in its entirety, the only thing missing is the decor and the furnishing. This is a project that was abandoned at the last, in mystery that continues to fuel its inevitable intrigue.

Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

Dark Corridors And Overgrown Concrete

Time and neglect has taken its toll on what was completed. Just as rumours have overgrown its story, the abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel is overgrown with creeping vines and jungle.

Wildlife now calls this place home too. Walking through the dark corridors I avoided the odd snake and frequent spiders. Much that I didn’t see lay lurking in shadows.

Loud noises frequently came from the floors above or below, and it soon became clear that I was not the only person in the hotel.

Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

I Was Not Alone In The Ghost Palace Hotel

I had thought that I might be the only one there. But it seemed that the Ghost Palace Hotel was fast becoming an unusual tourist attraction.

The hotel grounds are vast, and the corridors extensive. It would be easy to get lost in the rooms and amongst the decaying floors of the building. Easier still to be spooked in the low light of the abandoned Ghost Palace.

I could never be quite sure what was waiting round the corner. But rather than walking into wild animals or untoward characters -snakes and spiders aside of course- it was other tourists I would run into in the corridors, an experience still disconcerting in the confusing labyrinth of the Ghost Palace.

The rumours surrounding the hotel and perhaps the need for a new adventure in touristy Bali- something different to the beaches and bars- is what made me visit, and I’m sure it’s what is enticing other urban explorers and even just the bored tourist to venture into the overgrown concrete of this abandoned resort.

Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

Snakes, Rumours And Decay. All With A Beautiful View.

The Ghost Palace Hotel is a strange place to visit. Its potential as a resort is unquestionabale, and it’s interesting to wonder what could have been if the rooms were furnished and the doors opened to guests. It’s an intriguing look at the other side of tourism in Bali, the failings and bankrupties, the corrution and money that you don’t usually see as a tourist.

Now the tired rooms are crawling with spiders and snakes live in the long grass. The views though, are beautiful, and once you step past the initial fear of wondering what lurks inside the darkened corridors, it’s an exhilirating place to explore and to pose the question, what if?

That’s a question I couldn’t find any answers too though. The real story behind the Ghost Palace will inevtiably be lost under the weight of its legend. But overgrown with the stories and rumours that exacerbate the myths that surround this abandoned hotel, the Ghost Palace is sure to see more tourists walking through its broken doors than ever booked a night’s stay here.

How To Travel To The Abandoned Ghost Palace Hotel Bali

  • If you’re looking for something unusual to do in Bali then the Ghost Palace Hotel is an excellent choice. It’s easily reached, and easy to explore. There’s a detailed map below and you’ll find the entrance lies unassumingly on the main road to Lake Bedugul.
  • From Kuta, where I travelled from, it’s a drive of about 50 kilometres, which with Balinese traffic will most likely take at least 1.5 hours, if not more. The only way to get here is by scooter, or taxi.
  • At the entrance, which is barricaded off, you will most likely be told that hotel is closed and you need to pay to gain entrance. The going rate for a ‘Ticket’ is 10,000 Rupiah, less than 1 USD, and it’s worth it to stop any hassle. I’m not sure if they are real security guards- probably just some entrepeneaurial locals- but in the confines of an abandoned resort it’s always good to have someone on your side…

Bali’s Most Haunted Hotel: The Ghost Palace

An empty mountainside resort.

How to get to Bali Ghost Palace Hotel

When first arriving on the tropical party island of Bali, I turned to my taxi driver to ask him what he knew about the infamous Ghost Palace Hotel . He merely grinned and mentioned that it has slowly become a popular tourist attraction. I was curious about what the locals thought about this mountainside resort being haunted and if the ghosts of those who built it truly lurk the dark corridors of the hotel. The driver shook off my question by laughing saying that the ghost stories are probably nothing more than a work of fiction, but nevertheless, it is fun to believe. Regardless of what people may think, the stories that surround this mysterious ruined palace is enough to bring in groups of tourists up to the misty mountain slopes of central Bali.

A Hotel Built on Corruption and Murder

Lake Beratan Hotel

After driving up the winding roads through dense jungles and over steep mountains lead you to the gates of PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel and Resort or better known as The Ghost Palace Hotel. Just 50km from the hedonistic party scene in Kuta and down the road from the iconic  Lake Beratan , this luxurious resort was set to be a retreat for the mega-rich and political elite. Construction began in the 1990s, being funded by President Suharto’s infamous playboy son: Tommy. After being convicted for fraud, corruption, and murder, construction on the long-awaited 5-star resort was halted. As the grand halls and splendor of the palace fell into ruin, rumors began to circulate around the state of the hotel and its reason for closing. The most famous of these tales is that the resort is now home to the spirits of those workers who died building this mountaintop resort.

The Gate to the Spirit World

Bali Abandoned Places

The hotel can only be reached by taxi or motorbike. After driving 1.5 hours out of Kuta , the palace can be found on the right side of the winding road leading to Lake Beratan. Just after you pull into the driveway, two caretakers will emerge from their small security box demanding 10,00 INR (0.70 USD) as an entry fee. It is unclear if these men are truly in charge of looking after the property or not, but for such a small price, no one can complain. When pulling up to the reception of the Ghost Palace, it is easy to imagine a dapper limousine’s doors being opened by bellhops in smart red uniforms. The reality today is much grimmer, you are welcomed by what appears to be police tape wrapped around enormous columns blocking off a pool of mossy water which has accumulated on the elegant marble floor. As you creep into the lobby you almost expect a ghastly figure to appear behind the counter at reception.

Location of the Ghost Palace Hotel:

Rooms of the Dead

PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel

After paying the small fee to the caretakers, you are free to roam the entirety of the hotel. One of the things you will notice is just how complete the resort truly is, all that is missing is the furniture. Unfortunately, due to the years of neglect, water has crept into the rooms causing severe damage to the ceilings in the form of massive holes. When wandering from room to room you will find the odd chair or even bedpost laying around, but the majority of the rooms are left empty. What is unique is the view from the balcony, the entire hotel looks over the surrounding mountains and lush jungles. On this certain day, we could see the storm clouds rolling in, further creating an eerie atmosphere to the already decrepit hotel.

Reclaimed by the Jungle

Bali Abandoned Places

Over the years, nature has slowly begun the process of swallowing whole this once extravagant hotel for the rich and wealthy. Vines climb their way up the brick, breaking its way through glass into the hotel bedrooms, the grand ballrooms have been made into murky swamps, and all sorts of creatures have turned the various suites into their homes. Cobwebs with spiders as big as your fist are a common sight in many corners throughout the hotel. Snakes can even be found slithering around the dark corridors of this massive resort. When exploring the ruins of the Ghost Palace, keep in mind that the water damage has given this haunted resort a voice. It is not uncommon to hear the building moan and ache when wandering through the long ill-lit hallways. Another word to the wise, it is easy to imagine that you are the only one here in this remote mountain refuge. Due to the hotel’s increased notoriety, many tourists can be found making the journey up to the ghost palace, even tour groups will make a small detour while in route to some of the more famous of attractions. When wandering around in the black, keep in mind that another traveling could be just around the corner.

A Palace Left To Rot

Indonesia Abandoned Hotel

The many statues of fearsome nagas and tranquil angels can be seen keeping a watchful eye over the slowly dying holiday getaway. The Ghost Palace is huge, visitors almost need a whole day to see the entirety of the hotel. Although much of the resort is nothing more than empty rooms filled with broken shards of glass, this broken down palace is truly an amusement park for lovers of dark tourism and abandoned places. When en route to Lake Beratan, it is quite easy to visit the Ghost Palace, but plan on spending more time exploring the hotel than the touristy temple by the lake. The details and uniqueness of the architecture alone are enough to make you want you to keep wandering around the haunted halls of the Ghost Palace for hours. As the stories of the Ghost Palace continue to grow, so will the influx of tourists in search of the truth behind this abandoned manor and the supernatural beings which may wander its gloomy corridors.

I traveled to the Ghost Palace Hotel with my good friend Richard, the Travel Tramp. You can check out his article here !

Abandoned Ghost Hotel in Bali

teri b travels

The twenty minutes I spent at this Abandoned Hotel hidden in Northern Bali made my entire trip worth it.

I have had a long-standing obsession with abandoned places stemming from my fascination with the paranormal and vivid dreams I’ve experienced my entire life.  You may remember my visit to Pripyat  or the Abandoned Human Zoo outside of Paris.

Bali has a few abandoned wonders including lost planes, a number of random buildings  and a strange theme park that never was.  This hotel, nicknamed by locals as the ‘Ghost Palace’, was at the top of my list because of its magnitude, beauty and, above all, sheer mystery.

My last day in Ubud I hired a driver to take me all the way up north with the intent of seeing the famous temple gates at the Handari Golf Resort [which was truly also on my list as well]. My real intention, though, was to try to get a glimpse of the hotel.

I kept following along on my phone map as we drove further through winding jungle roads up into the mountains.  More twists and turns and then, there it was. The colossal red-roofed beauty. My jaw dropped. My driver was trying to make conversation, but I had tuned out. Unassumingly in plain sight, a majestic wonder right along the main road. I couldn’t believe it.

As I tuned back into the conversation, my driver told me it was built with corrupt money by the president’s youngest son. I knew from my research it was to be called the PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel and Resort. One story said the investor went to jail for fraud and the project was shelved, another suggested workers died during construction and the project was cursed. One tall tale even made mention of guests mysteriously disappearing on opening night. No one truly knows what happened, but it sits alone and empty. Someone’s dream, on hold.

Though he couldn’t understand my fascination, the driver stopped and talked the security guard into letting us explore the inside. I paid him $3.5o and was given the keys to the left behind kingdom.

My tiny adventure exploring the grounds includes what would’ve been the hotel entrance, lobby, some corridors and upper exterior gardens and overlooks.  The magnificent dragon-lined staircase, partially hidden in brush and shrubs, lead up to my own private gates in this forgotten corner in the Island of the Gods.

Roaming Through Bali’s Ghost Palace Hotel

Approaching the building people now refer to as the ‘Ghost Palace Hotel,’ I had no idea what lay in wait for me inside. From the outside, the large hotel is an impressive sight. Originally intended as one of Bali’s most luxurious and extravagant hotels, the structure stands at five stories tall, not including the basement. As I walked up the entrance steps, I immediately encountered an area blocked off by yellow tape, as if I’d just entered a crime scene.

Ghost Palace Hotel Exterior

It wasn’t clear exactly what the tape was supposed to be blocking off, as it was only preventing access to the large square in the middle of the floor. It was easy to walk around, so I decided to ignore it and head further into the massive lobby until I reached the reception desk. Unsurprisingly, there were no staff on duty. Surveying my surroundings to make sure that I really was alone, I made my way deeper through the abandoned hotel’s dark and grimy hallways. The deeper I got, the heavier the air seemed to grow.

The Uncertain History of the Ghost Palace Hotel

No one can really say for certain what happened to PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel and Resort, the official name of the Ghost Palace Hotel. What we do know is that construction began in the 1990’s and it was meant to be a high class luxury resort. Even with the hotel’s current empty and decaying state, that much is still evident today.

Abandoned Hallway

The most popular rumor involving the hotel’s abandonment has to do with Tommy Suharto, the youngest son of Indonesia’s president and dictator, General Suharto. Over the years, Tommy got himself involved in all sorts of shady land deals and other business dealings. And in most cases, he was able to get away with them due to nepotism and his family’s immense wealth. But not every time.

Some accounts say that the hotel was officially abandoned in 2002, which fits in with the Tommy Suharto version of the story. After hiring a hitman to kill a judge who convicted him of corruption, Tommy was finally imprisoned in 2002 (albeit for only four years). Another reason why 2002 makes sense is because that was the year of the Bali bombings in Kuta. The bombs killed a couple hundred people and subsequent tourist numbers plummeted.

Bali Hotel

Confusingly, another account says that the hotel was abandoned as early as 1995 after being in development for just a couple of years. And that it wasn’t an Indonesian elite, but a wealthy Chinese businessman who was behind the project. Still, another likely reason for the project’s abandonment could be the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis which also spelled the end of other large developments in Bali like Taman Festival Theme Park .

It seems odd how there are so many conflicting stories regarding exactly what happened to the Ghost Palace Hotel and when. We’re only talking about 15 to 20 years ago – hardly ancient history. But this ambiguity contributes even more to the abandoned hotel’s mystique, as it continues to attract increasing numbers of ghost hunters and urban explorers from around the world.

What we do know for sure, at least, is that the hotel was already mostly complete at the time of its abandonment. As I walked around its dark, crumbling and sometimes wet interior, it was easy to imagine where dining halls, reception areas or banquet rooms might’ve been – even if they were losing the battle against nature.

Missed Connections

Despite the Ghost Palace Hotel’s dark and ominous interior, visitors today can still be treated with what was supposed to be one of the hotel’s main selling points: its marvelous panoramic views. Not only does the location offer views of Mount Agung, Bali’s largest and most spiritually significant mountain, but it’s supposedly the only hotel on the island from which you can see both sunrise and sunset.

Ghost Palace Hotel View

Some of the verandas of the empty rooms provide fantastic views of the nearby forests and mountains of Bedugul, but it takes some stepping over indoor vines and bushes to access them. Wanting to get an even clearer view of the surroundings, I sought out the nearest staircase and made my way toward the top floor. But just then, I heard a chilling scream in the distance.

Ghost Palace Hotel Dining Hall

Though I’d jumped at the sound, I was lucky to have a view of the courtyard in front of the hotel at that moment. A group of four tourists were making their way to the building and were simply playing pranks on each other. I shrugged it off and continued exploring the upper floors.

I’d been alone in the hotel up to that point, but it wouldn’t be much longer before I’d encounter some other guests. Or so I thought.

ghost palace hotel bali history

Though the upper floors provided more light, getting to the hotel’s rooftop terrace wasn’t quite as easy as I expected. One of the bigger rooms on the top level was completely covered in a large puddle of murky water, at least several centimeters high in some parts. After backtracking and finding a different route, though, I finally made it to the terrace to reap my reward.

Ghost Palace Hotel Bedugul View

The top of the Ghost Palace Hotel provides stunning 360 degree views of surrounding Bedugul, a region of Bali known for its pristine lakes, forests and hiking spots. Looking down at the neighboring town, it becomes especially clear how this abandoned hotel is far from secret or hidden.

A significant number of locals must look up and see this large, decaying structure every day, though most Balinese themselves refuse to step foot inside. That means that a large majority of visitors are foreign tourists. Another group of which I happened to see approaching the hotel from my position at the top just then.

ghost palace hotel bali history

The most perplexing part of my entire visit to the Ghost Palace Hotel is the fact that I never ran into a single other visitor during my time there. And this is after witnessing 8 or 9 people in total walk in. I didn’t hear a single peep from anyone either, despite them making so much noise on the way to the entrance.

Except for the sound of some large insects flying around, the interior of the hotel remained deathly quiet throughout the duration of my visit. It was as if those other visitors got sucked into a vortex upon entry. Maybe that yellow tape just past the entrance, I realized, was blocking off something important after all…

The Haunted Island

ghost palace hotel bali history

An offering left by someone near the hotel’s entrance

Most haunted places around the world have some kind of tragic story attached to them – often a grisly murder or some other type of tragic accident. Afterward, they remain haunted by the restless spirits of those who died there. But haunted places in Bali don’t really need such tragic backstories for locals to be cautious.

Some might say, in fact, that the entire island is haunted. Or at least, it’s crawling with invisible spirits – both good and bad – at every square meter. That’s why in their daily offerings, the Balinese often pay tribute to both the benevolent spirits in the addition to the pesky dark ones , typically referred to as  bhuta or  kala.  Providing these darker entities with offerings is one way to keep them from getting out of control or too ‘hungry,’ so to speak.

But abandoned places, where such spirits often love to gather, are not home to the regular purification rituals or offerings which occur all the time in the villages. That’s why places like the Ghost Palace Hotel are believed to be teeming with darker entities, left to run amok and do as they please. Many locals avoid such places out of fear that an entity might even try to attach itself to one of their human visitors.

Ghost Palace Hotel nagas

Naga statues

The only way to purify such a place would be some kind of mass exorcism ritual. But even then, locals might have a hard time believing that all of the darker spirits have vacated the area. That’s why, despite their pristine locations, places like the Ghost Palace Hotel and many other abandoned buildings throughout Asia are left dormant for so long.

Theories on bhutas and kalas aside, though, the Ghost Palace Hotel actually does have a dramatic urban legend associated with it. The story goes that the hotel was just about to open, with all staff members, in addition to the hotel’s first guests, on location to get ready for the big day. All of a sudden, though, everyone in the hotel inexplicably vanished. As you can likely predict, the souls of the hotel’s staff are said to still lurk the premises to this day.

'As I roamed through the empty hotel, there was a very distinct and constant feeling that I was not alone.'

Bedugul Nagas

Out of all the abandoned or supposedly haunted places I’ve visited around the world, the Ghost Palace Hotel was by far the creepiest. It’s not that any one thing happened during my visit that was particularly frightening in itself, but the overall atmosphere of the place was unsettling in a way that’s difficult to describe with words.

As I roamed through the empty hotel, there was a very distinct and constant feeling that I was not alone – even from before the time I saw those other tourists approaching. Furthermore, the hotel also seems to have a magnetic energy that beckons you to keep on exploring its dark hallways and empty rooms, even when common sense might suggest you turn around and walk away. With that said, I’m already thinking about coming back to visit again during my next trip to Bali.

Interested in learning more about the relationship the Balinese have with the ‘unseen’? Be sure to pick up the book  Bali: Sekala & Niskala by Fred B. Eiseman ,  probably the most comprehensive work on the topic.

Additional Info

The Ghost Palace Hotel is clearly visible to commuters and local residents. If you’re getting there on your own, look for the place marked “The Abandoned Resort” on Google Maps. It’s just off Jl. Baturiti Bedugul, a little south of Danau Beratan lake.

If you’re hiring a driver or taxi, many of them seem to know where it is, as it’s become a common sightseeing spot for those on their way to other Bedugul landmarks like Pura Ulun Danu Bratan.

Outside of the Ghost Palace Hotel there will likely be a guard man who will ask for a small donation/ticket/bribe of Rp. 10,000. Just pay it and he will happily let you on your way.

Bali only has one airport, which is located in the capital and largest city of Denpasar. The best way to reach your accommodation on Bali island from the airport would be via taxi, which can be arranged by your hotel or simply negotiated at the airport.

The Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar is very well connected. You can find direct flights from all over Indonesia, in addition to plenty of international cities throughout Asia and even Europe.

The abandoned hotel Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel & Resort on Bali in Indonesia

A glimpse has been given behind an eerie abandoned jungle home dubbed the 'Ghost Palace of Bali'.

Once a hotel, it was built by playboy businessman Tommy Suharto, but now rots in the Indonesian jungle. It was first named the Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel & Resort, and has been left for more than two decades. It's now completely blanketed by weeds and vines. It was expected to become a luxurious hotel, but is now described by locals as a "desolate wasteland". People on the Indonesian island stay clear of the eerie remnants of its shell and fear spirits may be trapped in what remains of its walls.

There are legends that the property is haunted by the ghosts of former workers who died trying to build it. Other rumours say the businessman behind the resort, Tommy Suharto, was cursed and faced a string of misfortunes.

Something otherworldly, it's claimed, could be affecting the structure's decay. The unfinished property looks like the kind of scary place where lost souls could wreak havoc. The main part of the hotel was completed before the creation of accommodation came to an abrupt halt.

A series of prominent structures and grand staircases are left, but no guest facilities. Vast stone serpents keep a watchful eye on the place. The building has now been taken over by vegetation, weeds, vines, and nests.

Urban explorers and tourists with an eye for adventure have been attracted to the property on the road from Kuta to Lake Beratan. An explorer who braved the expedition said there were no signs of people, and the building had been "swallowed" by nature.

Roman Robroek, 34, told The Sun: "The abandoned building used to be a beacon of elegance and luxury in the area. It was once a luxurious resort, but the hotel suddenly fell into decline. Today, the remnants of the hotel are largely swallowed by vegetation as nature continues to creep in. The hotel is rumoured to be haunted by the spirits of workers who tragically died during its construction."

He described the empty halls and deserted rooms giving a creepy aura that fitted the ghost stories and supernatural tales.

Roman, who visited earlier this year, said the rooms were littered with rubble, ancient furniture, and crumbling doors. And amazingly some of the bathroom suites still had guest robes and toiletries inside.

He found it interesting how large the hotel was, but rooms were often quite small with others - by contrast - being large and luxurious. He said some of the hotel's features aren't decayed as appears, but instead were never completed. This he felt added to the mystery behind its quick decay.

  • Post last modified: October 2, 2022

The palace speaks of its illustrious past. Locals now call it the ghost palace and it must be worth over a $100 million. Still set up in a serene and scenic backdrop, this abandoned Ghost Palace in Bali has so many stories engulfed within itself.

Once part of a plan to be an expensive project to come up as one of the luxurious properties of Indonesia, the doors never opened to the public. A lull remains behind the reasons that might have been behind preventing such an illustrious project to see daylight.

The furnishing and marble flooring are still intact but for an unknown reason, the hotel is now up for sale.

The Hotel is guarded at the front gate and those willing to pay a visit to this Ghost palace can do so by shelling as little as $1.

PI Bedugul Taman Rekreasi Hotel and resort, a.k.a Ghost Palace in Bali, Indonesia is still a tourist spot but as an abandoned haunted palace. The complex was built in the 1990s but could never see an opening.
