Murray's character sits firmly at the center of the film, and makes it part of a series, rather than just another sequel.

In general, it has the same look and feel, but the energy and enthusiasm have waned.

Murray's in his prime here as one of four fearless slime fighters in a sequel that is just about as funny and entertaining as the original.

A rather underwhelming sequel...

The sequel is, on the whole, a fairly mechanical spook show, filled with grinning ghosts that are definitely ghoulish but hardly menacing.

An almost uniformly substandard follow-up that, since the original film remains so beloved by so many people, still gets to be disappointing even two decades and change later.

Plenty of agreeable nonsense to develop within the larger Ghostbusters universe. It's a sincerely amusing movie, warmly energized to give fans a steamy second helping of the good stuff.

Effectively slimed everyone's fond memories of the original.

Frankly, Murray, Sigourney Weaver and even Aykroyd deserve much better.

Ghostbusters II is a supernatural comedy movie directed by Ivan Reitman, released in 1989. It is the sequel to the wildly successful 1984 movie by the same name. The star cast includes Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and Annie Potts. The movie starts five years after the events of the first movie. The ghostbusting business run by the main characters has gone bust as the city officials refuse to acknowledge the existence of supernatural entities. The Ghostbusters have disbanded, and each of the four members has gone into different professions.

Dana Barret, played by Sigourney Weaver, is now a single mother to a young son named Oscar. She is living in the same building as she was in the first movie, where the museum of art is built atop a river of slime, which has been discovered through various digging operations around the city. Junior Ghostbusters, a group of children dressed in similar ghostbusting gear, are seen venture into the sewer, where they come under attack from a spectral slime. After narrowly escaping, they run to the Ghostbusters' headquarters to seek refuge.

Meanwhile, Peter Venkman, played by Bill Murray is now hosting a paranormal-based TV show, while Egon Spengler(Dan Aykroyd) has set up camp in a laboratory conducting research on the effects of human emotions on the environment. Ray Stantz (Harold Ramis) runs a bookstore specializing in the supernatural, and Winston Zeddmore(Ernie Hudson) works as a chauffeur.

As the movie progresses, New York City begins to experience a series of paranormal events. Oscar gets abducted, and Dana notices strange occurrences in her building. The Ghostbusters reunite to investigate and soon discover that the river of slime beneath the art museum is the cause of all paranormal activity in the city. The slime reacts to negative human emotions and is being generated by the collective negativity of New York residents. The river is controlled by a malevolent entity that hopes to use it as a gateway to enter the physical world and take over the world.

The Ghostbusters team up with a new recruit, slime expert Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts), to devise a plan to harness the energy of positive human emotion to reverse the flow of the negative slime and obliterate the evil entity. The team suits up in their iconic jumpsuits and an upgraded arsenal of ghost-busting equipment, travel to the museum to tackle the evil entity and save the city.

One of the highlights of the movie is an emotional scene where the Ghostbusters get arrested for conducting Ilegal paranormal activities on the streets. They are put on trial, and a furious, slime-powered Judge presides over the trial. The comedic scene concludes with the Ghostbusters being acquitted of all charges and the Judge getting slimed, providing audiences with endless laughter.

The movie features some deliciously creepy villains such as a walking statue of liberty, a haunted painting, and a horde of ghost spirits let loose by the malevolent entity. The witty writing and dialogue give credit to the movie's enduring cult following amongst fans.

The performances by the leading cast are top-notch, with Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver delivering the comedic and dramatic beats seamlessly. The visual effects, though dated by modern standards, were considered revolutionary at the time and still add to the film's unique charm.

The official Ghostbusters Twitter account has released a cryptic video teasing the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel, which is going by the working title Firehouse .

The post promises, “Something strange is coming soon” and the video features a full moon and a werewolf howling. They could’ve used any kind of supernatural symbolism in this little tease, but they went with a werewolf. Will the Ghostbusters be dealing with a werewolf in the next film? Or, maybe this was also just done for a little playfulness.

This is said to be “the next chapter in the Spengler family story.” It will officially be heading back to New York City, and it will take place at the Firehouse headquarters that has been featured in the first two Ghostbusters films.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife co-writer and executive producer Gil Kenan is directing the sequel, with Afterlife director and co-writer Jason Reitman serving as writer and executive producer. The movie also stars Patton Oswalt , Kumail Nanjiani , comedian James Acaster , and Emily Alyn Lind  have joined the cast! They join returning cast members Paul Rudd , Carrie Coon , Finn Wolfhard , and Mckenna Grace .

It was previously revealed that Hudson will have a big role to play in the sequel. Reitman shared : “The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters.”

Hudson previously talked about the script: "I did read a version. I'm pretty sure they committed to doing another one. I'm very happy with it, but I also know this is early on. Jason has been incredible, and I really just love and appreciate him. I'm so thankful to be able to work with him. So, I'm excited about but... I haven't and I never assume anything. I am happy, though, to have Ghostbusters in my filmography. And I'm just really delighted when I see little kids, two and three years old, singing the song and being happy about it."

A 'strange' new teaser for the Ghostbusters : Afterlife sequel has been released.

The 15-second clip, shared by the official Ghostbusters X account , opens with a shot of the moon and a wolf howling in the distance. A small colony of bats flies by before the iconic Ghostbusters logo appears on screen, streaked with thin shards of ice. "Something strange is coming soon," the accompanying caption reads, in a nod to the song by Ray Parker Jr., which served as the theme for the original 1984 Ghostbusters movie and its follow-up in 1989.

While there aren't too many details about the plot, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has been described as "the next chapter in the Spengler family story." However, the precise manner in which this narrative unfolds remains unknown. Jason Reitman, the director of the previous film, officially announced the sequel in June 2022. Although he will not be directing this time, he has contributed to the screenplay alongside Gil Kenan, who will be taking the helm.

Ghostbusters 4 Sees The Familiar Cast Return

Ghostbusters 4 sees Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and McKenna Grace reprise their respective roles as Gary Grooberson, Callie Spengler, Trevor Spengler, and Phoebe Spengler from Afterlife . This time, Mr. Grooberson and the Spengler siblings will be full-fledged Ghostbusters , complete with the classic jumpsuits. They will be joined by legacy Ghostbuster s Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore, with Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson reprising their respective roles.

Ghostbusters Star Sigourney Weaver Wasn't Asked to Return for Afterlife 2

In July, Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson revealed that filming has wrapped on the Afterlife sequel. "Yeah, we finished, the movie is done, it's wrapped," the actor said. "Obviously, they're editing and doing whatever else." Touching on the film moving its release date from Dec. 2023 to Mar. 2024, he added, "I know there was a lot of shuffling around in terms of where it was being done, but I'm thankful that we at least got it done in the can, and now, I'm like everybody else, waiting to see what it all looks like."

Hudson previously revealed that while he loved reconnecting with the old cast, he didn't necessarily agree with the execution . "As we introduce new stories and new characters, that's what moves the whole thing forward, but we're still a part of it, so it was great to see Bill Murray, Danny Aykroyd, Annie Potts, it's great to see them there, and really just enjoying it and enthusiastic about being there. It's different, it's not necessarily the direction I would go in, but I just love being part of it, and I think the fans will like this new direction, but we'll see," Hudson said.

The untitled Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel will hit theaters worldwide on March 29, 2024.

While Ghostbusters has been a franchise that was dormant for a few decades after Ghostbusters II in 1989, the series received an ill-fated reboot in 2016, before returning to the original timeline and canon with 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife which brought the series back to its roots. Applying its formula to a coming-of-age story that also served as an emotional way to honor Harold Ramis ’ legacy , critics and fans alike adored the latest entry. The box office return was very respectable as well with Afterlife making over $200 million worldwide.

When Will ‘Ghostbusters Afterlife 2’ Be Released?

A sequel, tentatively titled Afterlife 2 was quickly greenlit and, after a delay earlier this year , the film is set to release in theaters on March 29, 2024 . Not much is known about the sequel’s plot at this time, but it will see the franchise return to New York City with the first poster teasing a chilling take over of the Ghostbusters logo.

One of the best parts of Afterlife , besides seeing Bill Murray , Dan Aykroyd , and Ernie Hudson suit up again, was witnessing the next generation of Ghostbusters form with Egon Spengler’s grandchildren played by McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard . Seeing them discover the Ecto-1 as well as all the old equipment used in the original films like the Proton Packs and Ghost Traps was perfect. It captured the same haunting sense of quirky wonder that the original horror comedy masterpiece had in the 80s.
