How to Identify the Different Bat Species Found in California

Bats are fascinating creatures that play an important role in our ecosystem. In California, there are over 25 species of bats with unique characteristics and behaviors. Identifying these different species can be challenging, but it’s essential for conservation efforts and understanding their impact on our environment. In this article, we’ll explore the different bat species found in California and how to identify them.

Common Bat Species in California

The most common bat species found in California are the Mexican free-tailed bat, big brown bat, little brown myotis, and the pallid bat. The Mexican free-tailed bat is known for its speed and agility and can be identified by its long narrow wings and a tail that extends beyond its feet. The big brown bat is easily recognized by its large size, dark brown fur, and broad wingspan. The little brown myotis is one of the smallest bats found in California with light brown fur and short wings. Lastly, the pallid bat has yellowish-brown fur with large ears and a distinctive white stripe on its face.

Rare Bat Species in California

Some of the rarest bat species found in California include Townsend’s big-eared bat, Rafinesque’s big-eared bat, spotted bat, silver-haired bat, and hoary bat. Townsend’s big-eared bats have uniquely large ears that help them locate prey while flying at night. Rafinesque’s big-eared bats have reddish-brown fur with long ears that have a distinct curve at their tips. Spotted bats have black fur with white spots on their back and wings. Silver-haired bats are easily identified by their silver-gray fur while hoary bats have frosted tips on their fur.

Habitat Preferences of Bats

Different species of bats prefer different habitats ranging from caves to forests to urban areas. Mexican free-tailed bats and pallid bats prefer dry, open habitats such as deserts and grasslands. Big brown bats and little brown myotis prefer forested areas while Townsend’s big-eared bats and Rafinesque’s big-eared bats prefer roosting in caves. Spotted bats are found in rocky canyons, while silver-haired bats can be found in both forests and urban areas. Hoary bats have been known to roost in trees and shrubs.

Importance of Bats to California’s Ecosystem

Bats serve as essential pollinators, seed dispersers, and insect controllers in California’s ecosystem. They play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our environment by consuming vast quantities of insects which helps control pests that damage crops and spread diseases. Without bats, California’s ecosystem would suffer from imbalances that could lead to significant problems for wildlife, agriculture, and human health.

In conclusion, identifying the different bat species found in California can be challenging but rewarding for those interested in conservation efforts or understanding their impact on the environment. Understanding the habitat preferences of these different species is also essential for their survival. By recognizing the importance of these fascinating creatures to our ecosystem, we can take steps to protect them for future generations.

An Ohio cave holds the world record for the longest walk-through horror house, delivering true nightmares below ground.

The Lewisburg Haunted Cave has been named one of the best haunted attractions in the nation, housing ghouls and terrors as well as 30,000 live bats.

Located about 30 miles west of Dayton, the haunted attraction is widely touted as one of the best in the state — if not the nation.

A walk through the haunt will take you 80-feet below ground.

The attraction holds a Guinness World Record for the longest walk-through horror house at 3,563 feet. And its scares are not to be outdone by its length. The attraction was named the Best Haunted Attraction in the nation in 2018 by USA Today's Reader's Choice poll.

For those not interested in scares, there is also a historic mine tour, operated by the Lewisburg Historical Society. This tour explains the history of the Lewisburg limestone mine — home of the haunted cave and Ohio's largest brown bat population. Organizers say this tour is not scary, and you are likely to see bats.

The haunted cave costs $25 or $30, depending on which dates you go . Children under the age of 10 cost $15. The mine tours cost $15 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Lewisburg Haunted Cave opens for the 2023 scare season on Sept. 15, and is open each Friday and Saturday through Oct. 28.

The Lewisburg Haunted Cave. (CONTRIBUTED PHOTO BY MICHAEL BURGE)

What’s more terrifying than a real cave full of bats?

This weekend is the last one of the season for Lewisburg Haunted Cave, which offers more than a half mile of fright as you venture into a wicked attraction located 80 feet below ground in a Limestone Cave.

It has 30,000 live bats (gulp).

WHAT TO EXPECT AT LEWISBURG HAUNTED CAVE

Take a haunted tour or a real cave 80-feet below ground with live bats and haunted bridges.

The cave holds a Guinness World Record for longest walk-through horror house (3,564 feet).

For the real scaredy cats (and we don't blame you), you can also take a non-scary tractor-drawn underground wagon ride through the old limestone mining operation while a narrator tells the unique story. More information can be  found here .

USA TODAY’S ‘BEST HAUNTED ATTRACTION’

In 2018, On USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice list for Best Haunted Attractions, two of Ohio's spookiest spots made the list.  The Lewisburg Haunted Cave in Lewisburg came in at No. 1.  The Dead Acres Haunted Hoochie in Pataskala was the other Ohio winner, coming in at No. 3.

"Located 80 feet below ground in a real limestone cave, the world's longest walk-through haunt is made even more creepy thanks to some 30,000 live bats," according to the  USA Today article . What's more eerie than a real cave with fluttering bats overhead?

Ohio is home to three of the total 20 nominees, making the Buckeye State the second most featured on the list, next to California. You can check out all 10 winners on  10best.com.

The haunted houses and destinations up for vote were selected by USA Today’s 10 Best Local Experts and editors who chose the options based on best actors, set designs, special effects and value for money.

You Can Walk Through Haunted Ohio Cave With 30,000 LIVE Bats

If you follow me on our website and read my articles, you will find that I write quite a bit about ghosts and the paranormal. It's like country artists say about writing a song, you go with what you know and what you have lived. And yes, I have had a lot of strange encounters with things that had no explanation, or a weak one at best. I guess, just like you, I'm simply trying to find answers and explanations for things that happen in life.

Ironically, you will rarely, if ever find me in a haunted house, or anything like it, during Halloween. I don't like the fabricated yearly haunts. But, my husband would let me, I would love to explore the real thing. He is afraid I will bring something home with me that we can't get rid of. I have to admit, I'm a little scared that might happen too. I've seen the movies.

But, when I came across this haunted cave experience, in Ohio, I thought, Let's go! Inside the cave, not only is it supposed to be haunted, it has over 30,000 LIVE bats. Now, I grew up with a mom and dad that hung bat houses on the trees in our yard, so I'm not afraid of bats. Growing up, they were always circling overhead. But, inside a dark cave, now that feels a little creepy.

The Lewisburg Haunted Cave is in Lewisburg, Ohio , and is open now, on the weekends through Halloween and has the 30,000 LIVE bats I was talking about, along with chilling scenes set up throughout the cave. From the Tristate, it takes around five hours to get there, but well worth it. Make a haunted weekend out of it.

Here is how it's described on their website.

What's scarier than a REAL cave? The Lewisburg Haunted Cave ... a 50-minute long experience...located eighty feet BELOW ground in LIMESTONE CAVE! World’s Longest Haunt! Plus 30,000 live bats! IT’S REAL!

I don't normally like pretend scary setups, but this cave looks incredibly scary, with a very real feel. It's unlike anything I have ever seen. Take a look.

This Halloween Attraction Near Dayton, Ohio is a Real Cave with 30,000 Real Bats

If haunted houses don't scare you anymore.  How about 30,000 live bats during the Covid-19 pandemic? That's what you'll find at Lewisburg Haunted Cave, a real limestone cave near Dayton, Ohio that's also a prime bat habitat.

Some people love to have the snot scared out of them every Halloween as they walk through a Haunted House.  You have the usual suspects like a man in a hockey mask and a loud chainsaw with no chain.  Then there are the rooms that randomly start rocking side to side.  But if the usual Haunted House scares are no longer doing the trick, how about going 80 feet under the ground into a terrifying bat cave?

OK, let's address the elephant in the cave.  When Covid-19 first became a part of the consciousness of the world, we all heard that humans got the virus from bats.  Is that true?  The Associated Press  broke down a recent study from the World Health Organization on the origin of Covid-19 and its connection to bats.

A joint World Health Organization-China study on the origins of COVID-19 says that transmission of the virus from bats to humans through another animal is the most likely scenario and that a lab leak is “extremely unlikely."

The study says that it is very likely the virus was spread to humans through other animals that contracted it from bats.  It is less likely that it was directly spread from bats to humans.

haunted bat cave

If I understand that info correctly, you will more than likely not catch the pandemic from one of these 30,000 bats.  However, if you're afraid of catching a virus from the bats, then I guess the Haunted Cave has done its job.  Get more info on this underground haunted attraction by clicking here .
