What is Hulu’s haunted house documentary?
This is more than just a spooky amusement.

Broken bones, bruises, extracted teeth, shaved heads, and crushed spirits are just some of the things that have allegedly resulted from an extreme haunted house experience that is at the heart of a new Hulu documentary, Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House .
The full-length feature documentary centers on the haunted house’s creator Russ McKamey and the allegations swirling around him that he is “a manipulative abuser, according to three people who realize the horror is never over once you decide to enter the Manor,” according to the film’s description.
In a nutshell, McKamey Manor is a survival horror attraction in which participants sign pages upon pages of waivers in order to agree to being physically and psychologically tortured. Originally founded in San Diego, CA, the attraction has a cult fanbase online thanks to McKamey posting videos from the debaucherous experiences to a closed Facebook group. The extreme haunted house experience has since moved to Summerville, TN and Huntsville, AL, in 2017, after locals complained, according to Country Living .
With each tour being tailored to an individual’s fears, the liability waiver allows “volunteers” associated with the experience to subject participants to torture ranging from “waterboarding, being tased, drugging, being forced to eat and drink items including vomit, restraints, and much more,” the article said.
Is McKamey Manor legal?
At McKamey Manor, the haunt doesn’t end until Russ McKamey says so. pic.twitter.com/oxy2giYlFW — Hulu (@hulu) October 2, 2023
Even when McKamey Manor was located in San Diego, it drew a number of complaints from past participants. In one such case, Amy Mulligan claimed the cameras were shut off for the worst portions of her experience, in which she had her head held underwater, with her hair wrapped around her neck, and begged the “actors” to let her go home, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune .
McKamey even had the cops called on him during his tenure in Tennessee in which witnesses saw “a screaming woman being dragged from a vehicle,” according to Nashville Scene . However, the police left without incident after it was established the woman was actually there consensually. Ever since then, McKamey has taken to calling the police ahead of any tours he gives to let them know they may be getting calls of strange occurrences on his property that is all part of the show.
Despite these disturbing accounts , which have drawn the scrutiny of local Lawrence County Commissioner Scott Franks among other critics, McKamey Manor is still in operation to this day. As Lawrence County District Attorney Brent Cooper explained to Nashville Scene, “It’s legal because basically the people that are subjecting themselves to the McKamey program, or whatever you want to call it, they’re doing so voluntarily […] That was one thing we went over at length with Mr. McKamey.”
With that said, Cooper clarified that “Tennessee is a state where you can withdraw your consent at anytime,” meaning that if a contestant doesn’t want to participate any more, they should be allowed to stop it when they want. If not, McKamey could be considered to be “committing a crime.”
Torture accusations and supposed grand prize

One woman, Laura Hertz Brotherton, claimed her San Diego-based McKamey Manor experience in 2016 amounted to brutal physical torture in which the “actors,” with McKamey behind the camera calling the shots, did not stop hurting her until several minutes after she repeated her safe phrase. She later shared photographs on social media of injuries documented from a hospital, such as having a swollen face, a lump on her forehead, wearing a neck brace, having red and puffy lips, and her mouth corners having small cuts from alleged “fish-hooking,” which also scraped the inside of her mouth. She also claimed to have a hairline fracture in her foot. Though she tried to go to the police, they told her she didn’t have a case due to the waivers she signed.
Supposedly, the grand prize for surviving the entire 10-hour experience is $20,000, which no one has ever achieved. However, that hasn’t stopped adrenaline junkies from all around the country from applying and participating in McKamey Manor. The only cost of admission, which requires a lengthy vetting process that includes interacting with McKamey himself beforehand and joining the closed Facebook group, is a bag of dog food that he supposedly donates to a local shelter. With that said, there is a $500 penalty for any curses uttered during the attempt and any challenges that contestants fail, according to Parade .

McKamey Manor: Everything To Know About The Haunted House From Hulu's ‘Monster Inside’ Documentary
The attraction has faced a lot of controversy in the past.

In fact, the house is so terrifying that no one has ever lasted 10 hours inside.
If you've already watched the doc and have questions, trust me, you're definitely not alone. And if you haven't seen it yet, consider this a fair warning that you might encounter some pretty gruesome stuff.
Ahead, you'll find the answers to all your burning questions regarding McKamey Manor, including how it works, how you can visit, the prize money, if it's still open today, and more.
Check out the trailer below.
What is McKamey Manor?
McKamey Manor is a haunted house attraction that is known for bringing its visitors' worst fears to life. It was founded by Russ McKamey around 2001, and quickly developed a loyal fan base.
Here's how it works: Contestants complete super terrifying tasks while blindfolded and transported around Summertown, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Alabama, per USA Today . And if someone can survive all 10 hours in the house, they win a $20,000 prize, per CBS .
Paid actors on site can manipulate guests, but the participants cannot touch the actors. Each visitor is also recorded the whole time.
Since the house's horrors are designed to tap into the specific fears of participants, every experience is different. In the past, contestants have claimed the waivers they sign to enter the house warn of the possibility of having to do things like pull out your own teeth, getting buried alive in a coffin, and other potential threats to physical safety, per USA Today .
The same contestant said the McKamey Manor's waiver states that there might be "a chance of death," per USA Today .
Where is McKamey Manor?
McKamey Manor is located in Summertown, Tennessee and Huntsville, Alabama. It was originally located in San Diego, California. However, it moved out due to the cost of living in the area, per News 19 .
How can I visit McKamey Manor?
You can visit one of the McKamey Manor's locations in Alabama or Tennessee, but note that you also have to meet certain qualifications before you can gain entry.
For starters, you must be 21, or you can get parental permission if you're 18 to 20. Those interested in trying the experience must complete a physical exam, a background check, a phone screen, a drug test, and sign a 40-page waiver, per Fox Business . You also have to show proof of medical insurance and get a doctor's note stating you are physically and mentally cleared, per the McKamey Manor website .
Once someone gets through all those checkpoints, they'll have to watch a two-hour-long documentary that features dozens of people who attempted to get through the house over the past two years.
How much does it cost to go to McKamey Manor?
A voluntary donation is recommended, according to the McKamey Manor website . The contestants' donation are actually used to fund your event. So, if this is something you're considering, you should also think about how much that would cost to make it all happen, and go from there.
Is McKamey Manor legal?
Yep, it's legal. And participants sign a very long waiver before they start.
Previously, guests had to follow a "no safeword" policy that allowed the actors to continue their actions despite the participant's desire to stop, but that has since been changed, and visitors can call it quits once they hit their breaking point, per Fox Business.
Of note: There are currently two Change.org petitions to shut it down. One has nearly 200,000 signatures and claims that the experience is "a torture chamber under disguise," which has led to visitors being sexually assaulted and forced to take drugs. The other petition has almost three thousand signatures.
While Russ McKamey hasn't specifically addressed the petitions, he has spoken out about his process, and claims there's nothing illegal going on. “There’s no torture, there’s nothing like that, but under hypnosis if you make someone believe there’s something really scary going on, that’s just in their own mind and not reality,” he told The Washington Post .
Is McKamey Manor still open?
While the two petitions are pushing for McKamey Manor to be shut down, it is still open to this day. They operate year-round and offer one show per week.
Has anyone beat McKamey Manor?
No. Considering all the conditions and mental and physical stipulations that go into attending McKamey Manor, it's no surprise that no one has ever beaten it.

Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House Trailer Exposes the Real-Life Terror at McKamey Manor
The Hulu documentary shares horrific tales from those who have attended the famous haunted house attraction.
- McKamey Manor is an extreme haunted house attraction that has moved from San Diego to Tennessee, with a second location in Alabama.
- The documentary Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House exposes the dark side of McKamey Manor and portrays its founder, Russ McKamey, as a villain.
- The film explores the psychological reasons why people are drawn to extreme experiences and sheds light on the dangers of McKamey's intense survival bootcamp.
For thrill seekers looking for a terrifying haunted house experience, McKamey Manor has been a sought-after destination for years. The extreme survival horror-style attraction was located in San Diego until its founder and namesake, Russ McKamey moved it to Tennessee in 2017; a second less-visited location exists in Alabama. As part of their Huluween programming, the streamer presents Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House , which exposes the real-life horror lurking behind manor walls. A newly released trailer paints a disturbing portrait of the house's inner workings, portraying McKamey as the villain. During the short clip, we hear him described as a monster and a great danger, and his operation labeled a cult. Check it out below.
Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House follows three participants who attempt to complete the house and explores why humans gravitate towards extreme experiences. According to executive producers Allison Corn and Stan Hsue, Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House reveals the dangers surrounding McKamey's intense survival bootcamp. In an interview with Deadline , Corn said:
"The film shines a light on a world that for too long has been allowed to exist in the dark and it's in that darkness that bad actors are able to do their worst. We think viewers will find it eye opening and truly unforgettable."
A YouTube search on McKamey Manor will bring up endless videos; some discuss the attraction, while others provide footage of attendees going through the house. The disturbing footage featured in these video is what led to Hsue and Corn's interest in McKamey Manor.
"So we dug in and found that the story is so much more than its shock value," Hsue said. "There is an extremely rich psychological layer that explores why people subject themselves to extreme activities and the topic raises fascinating questions about the limits and complexity of consent."

Russ McKamey Claims the Manor is "A Big Production"
Before attempting to complete McKamey Manor, all guests (according to the McKamey Manor's website), must be 21 or older (or 18-20 with parental consent) and pass a background check and drug screening, provide a letter from a physician for mental and physical clearance , sign a 40-page waiver (which lists death as a possibility) and provide proof of medical insurance. Once accepted, guests are subjected to physical and psychological torture, including physical attacks, being drugged, having teeth extracted, and waterboarding. A tour can go on for up to ten hours.
As expected, McKamey Manor has faced its share (maybe even more) of controversy, with some claiming that the attraction goes too far. According to McKamey, the whole thing is just a big show. In an interview with USA Today , he said:
"It's all entertainment. Halloween is nothing more than a big play. (The Manor) is just putting on a big show. That's all it is, just a big production."
Hulu's synopsis for the documentary reads: "What would it be like to be trapped in a real-life horror movie? Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House follows the story of Russ McKamey. The Navy Veteran who lures horror enthusiasts into his web. They find themselves pulled into the no-holds-barred world of McKamey Manor – a haunt that doesn't end until Russ says so."
Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House is available to stream on Hulu on October 12. It is executive-produced and directed by Andrew Renzi. It is produced by Lion Television US, with Corn and Hsue executive producing.

Where is McKamey Manor? Hulu Documentary Explores America’s Most Extreme Haunted House
By Nikita Mahato
Hulu’s upcoming documentary titled Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House takes a look inside Russ McKamey’s McKamey Manor . The navy veteran, dubbed the master of horror, lures enthusiasts into the viral terror experience. He designed the events to psychologically and physically torture participants with their consent. As the streamer describes, the “haunt that doesn’t end until Russ says so.”
According to Parade, McKamey first found the haunted house in San Diego, California, and operated it on his property. However, its main “attraction” is now located in Summertown Tennessee while some activities also run in Huntsville, Alabama.
Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House is a feature-length documentary film and premieres on October 12, 2023, at 12:00 am ET.
Has Anyone Beaten McKamey Manor?
This is Mckamey Manor. Extremely haunted , They say no one comes out the same. On the spooky scale this is a 10. Would you go in ? pic.twitter.com/9YA2Yi0zzl — Kylie (@kyliesmiles101) October 7, 2023
The Parade report claims that McKamey Manor offers winners a prize amount of $20,000. Sadly, nobody has beaten the haunted house to date. Founder Russ McKamey urges enthusiasts that money shouldn’t be the primary reason for them to participate. He reportedly told CBS 42 last October that “if they’re here solely for that factor, they’re going to be really disappointed because the Manor always wins.”
How Much Does It Cost and Is It Safe?
According to The Washington Post , Parade confirmed that Russ McKamey expects participants to offer a bag of dog food for his pets for an admission fee to the haunted house. However, if one curses during the happenings, they will have to pay a fine of $500 each time. Similarly, they are also expected to pay $500 for every activity failed to complete.
Moreover, as per The Tennessean , all interested must sign a massive waiver before proceeding. McKamey claims that while there are no safety issues, it can be dangerous. Several videos on YouTube, captured by participants, show them contending in muddy situations and dealing with tasks involving height and water, among other things.
The upcoming Hulu documentary will follow the master of horror and his horrifying haunted house amidst allegations that call him a “manipulative abuser.”

Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House on Hulu
Where is the haunted house from Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House located?
The Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House documentary on Hulu started streaming on Oct. 12, 2023. And if you’ve watched it, you know just how horrific this haunted house is. Personally, it’s very hard to wrap my head around what would cause people to voluntarily take part in such an extreme horror-filled haunted house. The Hulu doc does explain that though.
The haunted house from Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House is known as McKamey Manor . The attraction currently has two locations – Summertown, Tennessee and Huntsville, Alabama . It was first founded by Russ McKamey in San Diego in 2001, before being moved to Tennessee in 2017. According to Country & Living , the main part takes place in Tennessee, with the Alabama location serving as a second place McKamey takes participants to if they “survive long enough.” Whatever that means.
The horror attraction is meant to give people the experience of actually being in a horror film. But honestly even though this is voluntary, the things they do are crazy. Operating year-round, tours through the house can go up to eight hours and participants could experience broken bones, extracted teeth, and psychological trauma. You have to sign a 40-page waiver and it only runs on the weekend. Visitors going through it all can use a safe word if they want to stop immediately. Though according to the Hulu trailer, one past visitor’s experience didn’t stop right away after she said her safe word.
So what’s the reason some people do this? One of them is the $20,000 cash prize if you complete the whole tour. But since it started, no one has ever finished the tour completely. Even with how extreme it is, the attraction has gained a cult following, and has people on waiting lists. So what is the Hulu film about? Read on below to find out.

Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House on Hulu
What is the Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House documentary on Hulu about?
If you haven’t watched the doc, you might be wondering what to expect. It features three people who have gone through the experience themselves, and they’ve come to the realization that McKamey is a “manipulative abuser,” per Hulu . The founder also records everyone who takes part in the tour, so there’s plenty of footage. And while Hulu had access to it, they didn’t to McKamey himself since he declined to be a part of it.
The film explores his background as a Navy veteran turned “master of horror,” per the synopsis. He first started the haunted house to show his love for Halloween. But the founder quickly realized that as it grew in popularity, he could grow how far he could go as well, getting a cult-like following as well. And there’s still people willing to do it. The documentary focuses on the three people who found the “will to fight back,” as well as dives into the reasons why anyone would voluntarily go through such a horrific experience.
Per Hulu, the world of immersive horror has people who are outsiders and misfits, trying to find ways to overcome their trauma. Field of Screams is PA’s best haunted attraction
Chances are if you are driving near the Lancaster area during the fall season, you will see a billboard for a place called Field of Screams. Since 1993, Field of Screams has been terrorizing Pennsylvania residents with its annual attractions and haunted houses. However, have you ever wondered what makes those haunted houses work each and every year?
Field of Screams was the brainchild of two brothers. One of those brothers is Jim Schopf, who co-founded the iconic attraction when he was a sophomore at Millersville University. Though he was attending Millersville as a secondary education major, the haunt expanded year after year and essentially became a full-time job.
When asked about the feelings of seeing his business become such an essential part of Halloween in Pennsylvania Schopf told us, “There’s a lot of words: Thrilling, rewarding, exhilarating and a lot of fun.” He went on to say his favorite part of Field of Screams year after year, “It’s opening night. It’s seeing all the hard work during the off-season come to fruition and finally being open.”
However, it’s not just the Schopf brothers that make Field of Screams happen, but itis the hard work of their countless volunteers and actors. There are dozens of characters and scare performers spread across the four haunted attractions that make up Field of Screams. Those attractions are Nocturnal Wasteland, Den of Darkness, Frightmare Asylum and the Haunted Hayride.
Hidden amongst the rows of corn fields is the main base of operations for the Field of Screams team. The two-story barn houses every costume, prop and make-up effect needed to make each night possible.
One of the actors that has become a regular for the haunt is Mason Swisher. Swisher's role each year is a chainsaw performer, the haunt actors specifically trained to handle the chainless chainsaws throughout Field of Screams. In the eight years he’s been part of the team he said the thing that brings him back each time is, “Being with people who are a lot like me. Being really kind, being really happy, being really outgoing. It helps with getting that aggression out that builds up over the year.”
Field of Screams’ 31st season is wrapping up on Nov. 11, but they have no plans of going anywhere anytime soon. Expect a full return in September 2024.

Watch: Phil Anselmo Shows Off His Completed Haunted House Attraction

For a few years now, Pantera singer Phil Anselmo has built a haunted house attraction that is open to family and friends to adventure through.
Just a few days ago, the Housecore Records YouTube channel uploaded a video featuring Anselmo giving a guided tour of his haunt attraction; in that video, the haunt was not finished yet and was still being worked on . But even with props lying about and the haunt still in progress, the setup looked pretty cool.
So, what does Anselmo’s finished haunted house attraction look like when all done? Well, it looks pretty damn amazing. In a new video uploaded onto the Housecore Records YouTube channel, a new walkthrough tour of the haunt has been shared, but this time, it’s of the completed attraction.
In the description associated with this video, Housecore Records shares: “Phil goes 100% ‘balls to the wall’ for Halloween with his personal haunted house. Check out the absolute insanity of it all!”
Featuring music from Anselmo’s band Down throughout, the walkthrough provides a creepy and thrilling look at the various horror elements that make up the haunted house. The amount of effort that has gone into this haunt is nothing short of incredible; from the numerous props to all the decorations and costumes, it is truly a Halloween extravaganza.
Below you will find the new updated video from Housecore Records showing off Phil Anselmo’s completed haunted house. Also below, you will find Pantera’s upcoming tour dates.

5 American aid workers among those evacuated from Gaza into Egypt, U.S. officials say
Haunted house is one of the most popular halloween attractions in san jose.
SAN JOSE, CA - A haunted house in San Jose is a huge hit with hundreds of people showing up there throughout Halloween night.
"A lot of people they jump at you, it’s really crazy. It’s scary, it’s insane," said Mylie, of San Jose.
Hundreds of people lined up to be spooked at the Ghoulish Goods Factory haunted house.
"I’m looking forward to being scared! Last year I closed my eyes the whole entire time. This year I’m going to open my eyes," said Tiana, of San Jose.
Bob Schiro started the haunted house in 2000 at a local school then moved it here on Church Drive in 2009. He founded the Boo Crew to host the free event every year and says the community supports it.
"We start August 1st. It takes about a three-month journey. It nickels and dimes me a little bit, but people are gracious enough to fund us for merchandise and materials," Schiro said.
During the event, the Boo Crew is also holding a toy drive, getting ready for the Christmas holiday. After 23 years of this Halloween extravaganza, neighbors say it’s become one of the most popular attractions in the South Bay.
"We just heard on Google that this was the biggest best haunted house and free in San Jose. I’ve lived down the street for 14 years and I didn’t even know this existed. So, we parked a block away, walked up. We’ve been in line for an hour and 20 minutes," said Cliff, of San Jose.
The Boo Crew says they’ll be open Wednesday night as well. They call it October 32nd, and they have two shifts: 4-6pm for toddlers and small children and everyone else at 6 p.m.

Popular haunted house in West Allis benefits a nonprofit, but city says it can't continue

Patty and Adam Novak have been running the Novak Manor in West Allis for more than a decade. The 7,000-square-foot attraction draws in thousands of brave Halloweengoers each year. But on Oct. 16, Patty Novak shared a video on Facebook stating the Novak Manor would not be continuing after this year.
“Unfortunately these last two weekends will be our last," she said in the post. "I don’t want to get into a whole lot of detail right now, we will at the end of the season, but the city is not allowing us to continue.”
City attorney in West Allis explains why the haunted house cannot continue after the 2023 season
When contacted by the Journal Sentinel about the reason for the city's stance, West Allis City Attorney Kail Decker said the Novaks properly submitted documents for the attraction, but "those documents just didn't authorize them to run a haunted house," he said. "That permit authorized them to obstruct the right-of-way for a display."
Decker said the permit application for 9730 W. Montana Ave. said "the display is around the house in the yard surrounding the property" and "it's not clear from the application that this was a haunted house and not just a display."
The Novaks were shocked by the amount of support they were receiving in the community after the video had been posted on Facebook.
"I did not expect the crazy outpouring of support," said Patty Novak, "I guess I didn't know how much we were loved."The Novak Manor has been a popular attraction in West Allis over the last decade. About 7,000 to 8,000 guests attend the spooky attraction each year in October, according to the Novaks.
Attendance has multiplied for the haunted house since the announcement it would be closing following the 2023 Halloween season. The house is filled with tons of spooky things such as a haunted hospital, clowns, unexpected windows and doors closing and "Halloween's" Michael Myers hanging in front of the house in an old police squad car; all for an affordable price.
"Obviously, we know not everybody loves Halloween like we do," said Patty Novak. "So that's okay, and we understand that. We have tried to work with people in the past who don't love it as much as us, and thankfully it's worked out very well."
Volunteers and neighbors also are around to help monitor the crowds. It's fun not only for visitors but for the people who help run the attraction as well.
"Our actors are amazing," she said. "They work with the kids. Most of our actors are from Bikers Advocating Child Safety, and then some friends and family thrown in there too, but they know how to work with the kids. That's what they do. They work with abused and bullied kids. So they are amazing. They take their masks off if the kids are scared, if they have a glow stick ― glow stick means don't scare the kid. That's what we came up with."
Bikers Advocating Child Safety is a nonprofit organization located in Waukesha that started in 2020. Their mission is to deliver support to the children and families in need.
There were no fines issued to the Novak family and no enforcement action would be taken against the Novak Manor, according to Decker. There were also no reported safety concerns.
"I spoke with Patty last week Monday and decided that this issue was caused by an honest misunderstanding," said Decker. "The Novaks thought they were doing things correctly. For that reason, I exercised discretion and decided that no enforcement action would be appropriate and we'd just focus on compliance in the future."
Why the Novaks' permit was denied by the City of West Allis
In West Allis, the Novak Manor is in an RA-2 zone , a zone intended for neighborhoods with primarily detached dwellings on moderate-sized lots. The use of the property in this area constitutes an event space or theater under WAMC 19.16 , according to the City of West Allis. Under WAMC 19.32 , this type of use is not allowed in an RA-2 district.
The City of West Allis provided three solutions to resolve the situation:
- Scale back the operation to just a display from the same location.
- Keep the operation the same and move it to a location that is zoned to allow an event space or theater.
- Keep the operation the same at the same location and amend the law to allow event space or theater in an RA-2 zone.
The Novaks shared their thoughts on the solutions West Allis provided. They prefer the last option:
"That's what we're hopeful for. We're cautiously optimistic that would be ideal for us, and again, we are more than willing to work with the city on whatever needs to be done for that. We're more than willing to work with our neighbors. Thankfully, we are so lucky. Even in the past two nights that we've been out here, dozens upon dozens of neighbors have come out."
They shared the first solution is too commercial as they don't want to take funding away from the volunteers from the organizations they donate to, and they believe the second solution would cause chaos in the road outside the house.
The Novaks also do not plan on filing an official business license for the Novak Manor as they said it would only allow one person on their property, which would not let them to do what they want to do.
"Our big thing is that we want to finish the season strong," Patty Novak said. "And because there's been such a huge media and huge social presence, we want to make sure that everybody coming out is respectful of our neighbors, respectful of the displays, and just is here to have a good time."
The Novaks are hopeful to resolve the situation with the City of West Allis and want things to remain as peaceful as possible.
"We want to be respectful, we want to try to work with them, and we don't want anybody who wants to support us. Reach out to them, tell them your thoughts and your opinions, but do so in a respectful manner. We don't want anybody being angry and mean about it."
The Novak Manor will have its final Halloween run for the season this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28 from 6 to 10 p.m. A petition was created to support the Novak Manor, it currently has over 3,500 signatures. The Novaks are also asking the public to share their experiences from the Novak Manor by emailing [email protected].
