12 Most Expensive Rolls-Royce Cars Of All Time, Ranked

Few, if any, other luxury marques command such prestige among the world's richest as Rolls-Royce . The brand's cars are a global symbol of wealth, both old money and new money, often commanding price tags an order of magnitude above what the rest of us could ever justify spending on a car. They're built to accommodate the whims of the most demanding customers, and as a result, they're usually highly personalized to their original buyers.

When it comes to resale, this has a polarizing effect — lesser Rolls-Royce models often depreciate hugely in value since their eye-watering high running costs and custom finishes make them less attractive to used buyers. However, those considered to be the best examples of the brand's output often do the opposite, appreciating in value to figures way beyond what many people could ever expect to earn in their lifetimes.

In recent years, Rolls-Royce has made sure that its wealthiest buyers don't just have to spend their cash on classics either — the most loyal among them get access to the brand's VIP program and, therefore, the chance to commission a custom-made, coach-built car. Whether they're sought-after classics or modern bespoke creations, these 12 Rolls-Royces are among the most expensive ever sold.

Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Skiff – $1.12 Million

With any vintage car, there are two key things that collectors always look for: originality and uniqueness. The skiff-bodied Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP sold at a Bonhams auction in 2015 delivered both of those things in spades, being in mostly unrestored condition despite being over 100 years old. This was partly because it spent a significant portion of its existence in Egypt, where the hot, dry climate kept it better preserved. Although it wasn't the company's first model, the 40/50 HP Silver Ghost is considered to be the car that cemented its automaker's reputation as one of the world's finest.

Over 7,800 examples of the 40/50 HP Silver Ghost were produced in total, but it's thought that very few, if any, examples survive with a wooden skiff body. It's not known exactly when the current body was fitted to the car — Bonhams states it's likely to have been somewhere between 1919 and 1923 — but the chassis was first delivered in 1914. After plenty of buyer interest, the car eventually crossed the block at auction for 7.475 million Danish Krone, or roughly $1.12 million.

Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III Drophead Coupé Adaptation – $1.14 Million

Rolls-Royces have long been the rides of choice for Hollywood's biggest names, but very few stars have appeared in movies alongside their beloved cars. The Silver Cloud III Drophead Coupé Adaptation auctioned by RM Sotheby's in 2021 can count itself among that elite club, having featured alongside its owner Sophia Loren in 1963's "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." Bought new for Loren by her husband, the car served as her personal vehicle alongside its onscreen role and is one of just 25 left-hand drive examples made.

It was originally finished in Steel Blue but was subject to a restoration in 2004 and repainted the much darker shade that it presented with at auction. However, the engine remained original, and it still wore its original license plate. The auction, held in the tiny European principality of Liechtenstein, saw bidding reach 1,045,625 Swiss Francs, around $1.14 million at the time.

Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster – $1.33 Million

The Silver Ghost Piccadilly Roadster sold at Bonhams in 2022 was nearly destroyed so many times that its chassis was nicknamed "The Lucky Dog." The chassis was built in Rolls-Royce's American factory and its bodywork was completed by Merrimac. It was first delivered in 1926, but only a few years into its existence, it had its first set of misfortunes. In 1932, it was stolen in New York but later recovered. Then, the following year, it was involved in a traffic collision but escaped mostly unharmed.

It then remained in New York for several decades before ending up in a parts yard and nearly scrapped. It was saved by a noted Rolls-Royce collector, but its body was then transferred onto the chassis of a Phantom I, where it remained for another few decades. The original chassis and drivetrain were also kept by the collector, then bounced around owners for another few years after he passed in 2003. By 2015, a new owner had managed to buy both the bodywork and the original chassis back from separate owners and set to work reuniting them. The work took years, but finally, the car was put back together as it was originally built and then sold at auction. This most unlikely of survivors eventually fetched $1.325 million.

Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Berline – $1.76 Million

The Phantom II was already a rare model, with only 1,767 examples built, but the Phantom II Continental Berline sold by Gooding & Company in 2016 is even rarer. In fact, it's believed to be completely unique, being the only Phantom II to be bodied by coachbuilders Figoni et Falaschi. It was built in 1932 and appeared at the prestigious Deauville Concours d'Elegance seven years later, winning the first of its many concours awards.

It was originally commissioned by the Prince of Nepal, who had been exiled from his country at the time. Under its long hood was a 7.7L six-cylinder engine, making 120 horsepower, a highly impressive figure for its day. Although it's one of the most expensive Rolls-Royces ever sold, it didn't actually meet its auction estimate on the day. The hammer went down at $1.76 million, while it was estimated to fetch anywhere between $1.8 million and $2.2 million.

Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sports Coupé By Freestone & Webb – $2.42 Million

The original owner of this 1933 one-off coupe, Sir John Leigh, was one of Rolls-Royce's most loyal customers of the era. Like most Rolls-Royces of its era, the chassis and drivetrain were built by the automaker itself, and then the car was sent off to a coachbuilder for bodywork. In this case, that coachbuilder was Freestone & Webb, of which Leigh was also a regular client.

After more than a decade of ownership, the car was sold off so Leigh could purchase a new Phantom III. Over the decades, it changed hands several times and was remarkably purchased twice by new owners who stopped the existing owner at the side of the road and simply asked to buy it there and then. After 80 years of careful owners keeping the car in pristine condition, it appeared at an RM Sotheby's auction in 2013, where it fetched $2.42 million.

Rolls-Royce Phantom IV Limousine Princess Margaret – $2.47 Million

The Phantom IV is the rarest generation of Rolls-Royce's flagship line — only 18 examples were ever produced, all built for royalty or heads of state. The most valuable of those to appear at auction was the personal car of Princess Margaret of the British royal family , with the car fetching 2.255 million Swiss Francs (around $2.47 million) at RM Sotheby's in 2021. Its coachwork was completed by Rolls-Royce's in-house coachbuilder, H.J. Mulliner, and featured several unique modifications made at the request of the Princess.

Electrically operated fabric blinds were fitted for privacy, while a police siren and flagpole were fitted for royal duties. It remained in official service until 1967 when it was sold to a dealer in London. It's unknown exactly why it was sold — most British state cars are kept under royal ownership. Strangely enough, its new private owners hired it out to film shoots and weddings, all while unaware of its previous owner, as the selling dealer had been sworn to secrecy. It was eventually bought by a noted Rolls-Royce collector in 2003 and has been kept in private collections since then, although it's been occasionally shown in that time.

Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Pullman Limousine – $2.54 Million

One of the most expensive examples of the 40/50 HP Silver Ghost ever sold at auction, the Pullman Limousine fetched $2.535 million through Gooding & Co. in 2021. Its high price was primarily down to its originality — its upholstery, despite being 111 years old at the time of sale, was all original and had never been restored.

Its bodywork was also original, as was, of course, the chassis and engine. The engine in question was a 7.5-liter six-cylinder making, as the car's name suggests, 50 horsepower. The value collectors place on originality can be clearly seen when comparing a similar car also offered by Gooding & Co. in 2023.

Despite being the same chassis, year, and overall condition, the latter car had been subject to a restoration and so wasn't original. As a result, it was estimated to fetch between $500,000 and $600,000. However, even at just a fifth the value of the all-original car, it failed to attract a high enough bid and didn't sell.

Rolls-Royce 10 HP – $7.04 Million

There are few vintage Rolls-Royces more special than chassis 20154, a 10-horsepower model sold at Bonhams in 2007. It's the oldest known surviving Rolls-Royce and only the fourth ever made. It was displayed at shows in Paris and London to attract customers to the then-fledgling company before being eventually sold to private ownership. It remained in use until 1930 with various owners when it was parked and reportedly used as a movable barrier during wartime to prevent enemy forces from landing in a nearby field.

It was eventually bought and restored in 1950 by Oliver Langton, a well-known motorcycle racer, and remained in his ownership until 1978. From then on, it was kept by another owner until its appearance at the auction. It sold for £3,521,500 (roughly $7.04 million at the time), becoming the most expensive Rolls-Royce 10 HP to ever cross the block in the process.

Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Double Pullman Limousine The Corgi – $7.48 Million

The Corgi earned its nickname as it was the car chosen by the makers of the Corgi diecast line to be the model on which its toy cars were based. A 1912 40/50HP Double Pullman Limousine, it was originally bought by a London-based client who already boasted another 40/50 HP in his collection. Its coachwork was completed by Barker, and it's thought to be the only surviving example featuring the coachbuilder's design.

Unlike many other cars of its era, the Corgi was never rebuilt with a different chassis or bodywork, staying in complete form since its inception. Even during a restoration carried out around the turn of the century, it was not disassembled, as its condition was so good that it didn't need to be. The car that shaped millions of toy vehicles commanded a suitably exceptional premium when it sold at Bonhams in 2012, fetching £4,705,500, or around $7.48 million.

Rolls-Royce Sweptail – $12.9 Million

While there may well have been more expensive classic Rolls-Royces sold in private deals, the Corgi remains the most expensive to hit public auctions. However, it's not the most expensive Rolls-Royce ever sold — in fact, the automaker itself has created cars that cost considerably more. One of those cars is the one-off Sweptail , which was built to the wishes of a VIP client. It takes styling inspiration from the great Rolls-Royces of the '20s and '30s and became the first in a line of ultra-exclusive coachbuilt cars when it was finished in 2017.

Almost every element on the car is bespoke, even down to the "O8" license plate, which was milled from solid pieces of aluminum. Rolls-Royce never officially revealed how much the car cost, although reports at the time suggested a price tag of around £10 million (roughly $12.9 million). The brand's CEO refused to confirm this figure to Autocar  but said, "You can easily write [that] this is probably the most expensive new car ever." Of course, that's no longer true, as Rolls-Royce has since unveiled more coachbuilt specials with even more eye-watering price tags.

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail – $28 Million

In a 2021 announcement detailing the official revival of its coachbuilding division, Rolls-Royce also announced its most expensive car up to that point, the Boat Tail. Like the Sweptail before it, it was based on the platform of the Phantom but featured all-new bodywork, a canopy roof, and yacht-inspired design touches. All in all, 1,813 new parts were created for the Boat Tail, with many of those created for the "hosting suite" at the rear, complete with a parasol.

Just developing the rear suite reportedly took nine months, with the whole car taking years to go from idea to reality. Only three examples of the Boat Tail were made, each with heavy input from their respective owners. Alongside the car, owners also got a matching watch designed to compliment the colors and finish of each example. Unsurprisingly, Rolls-Royce didn't disclose a price tag for the car but reports peg its cost close to $30 million.

Rolls-Royce Droptail – $30 Million

Unveiled earlier in 2023, the Droptail is Rolls-Royce's latest and greatest coach-built car , and if reports are anything to go by, the most expensive. Four examples of the car are set to be built, with each one different from the next. Developing it reportedly took four years, with Rolls-Royce working closely with its VIP clients to design a car exactly to their tastes. The first of the four to be revealed, La Rose Noire, sports a custom Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch valued at $200,000 and a custom mount in the dash in which to place it.

The exterior is finished in a shade called "True Love," which reportedly comprises 150 layers of paint. Unlike previous coachbuilt cars, the Droptail's performance has also been upgraded slightly over the standard Phantom. An extra 30 horsepower has been coaxed out of the twin-turbo V12 engine, although statistics as vulgar as 0–60 mph time or top speed have been left out of the brand's press release. Focusing on performance is missing the point of the car anyway — this is purely about creating something as opulent as possible and heralding a new golden era of Rolls-Royce coachbuilding in the process.

Torsten Muller-Otvos, chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will retire on November 30 after almost 14 years running the brand renowned for stately, expensive cars.

His departure comes in line with BMW Group policies governing the retirement age of top-level executives, a spokesperson said. Chris Brownridge, the chief executive of BMW UK, will succeed him on December 1.

“It took me two years to understand that this is not a car business,” Muller-Otvos said during a wide-ranging interview on October 3.

“The motivation for clients is not ‘I need a car to move from A to B.’ We call it the badge of me: ‘How can I generate something that carries my personal signature? Because, as a client, I’m not buying luxury off the shelf any longer.’”

The debonair German, 63, rejuvenated the company that Charles Rolls and Henry Royce founded in 1906, growing sales by more than 500 per cent since he joined in 2010.

He implemented lucrative customisation programmes, introduced the brand’s first SUV and electric vehicle, and reduced the average age of the Rolls-Royce owner from the late 50s to 43 – the youngest average customer age of any BMW Group brand.

“Torsten’s outstanding leadership, unswerving commitment, clear vision and exceptional ability to build a strong, focused team have helped make Rolls-Royce the world-class luxury brand it is today,” BMW chief executive Oliver Zipse said.

“Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a jewel in the crown of our organisation.”

Last year, Rolls-Royce delivered 6,021 vehicles globally with an average price of around $525,000. By contrast, the average Rolls-Royce vehicle in 2010 cost around $262,000.

The company delivered 2,711 of them that year, when 80 per cent of the company’s customers were chauffeur-driven, Muller-Otvos said.

“It was a little bit old, a little bit seen on a pedestal, not openly approachable,” Muller-Otvos said of the brand when he started. “It was clear that Rolls-Royce Motor Cars needed to be far more than [just] an automotive luxury brand.”

Known for his Savile Row suits, well-coiffed hair and charming demeanour, Muller-Otvos held the top spot at Rolls-Royce longer than any other person since Claude Johnson, who introduced Rolls to Royce in 1904.

Muller-Otvos is an outlier among his peers at BMW Group, which typically shuffles high-ranking executives every few years. His predecessor, Tom Purves, held the chief executive position for two years; Ian Robertson, who preceded him, held it for three.

“For me, it was never a question of whether I should move somewhere else,” he said. “I love the brand, I love the position. For me, it was heaven in a way.”

Muller-Otvos’s exit comes as the English car maker navigates a new age of EVs and autonomous driving. The company has announced that it will sell its last combustion-engine vehicle by the end of 2030.

An all-electric coupe, the $420,000 Spectre, debuted earlier this year. Client deliveries will begin in November.

“My personal conviction was that electric is great for the brand,” he said, reiterating the company’s commitment to electric power despite news that the UK government has postponed a ban on sales of internal combustion vehicles.

“We tested with it and experimented with it [for years]. This is Rolls-Royce 2.0.”

Michael Dean, the global head of automotive research at Bloomberg Intelligence, credits Muller-Otvos with shaking off a sleepy company culture that had pervaded Rolls-Royce.

“He was bold enough to be the first luxury brand to target being fully electric by 2030, with the likes of Bentley and Maserati following his lead,” Dean said.

Muller-Otvos joined BMW Group in 1989, advancing to vice president of brand strategy and marketing before becoming the director of Mini in 2000.

In 2004, he assumed responsibility for BMW Group marketing and brand management; four years later, he was running BMW’s global product management, where he stayed until taking the helm at Rolls-Royce.

Once there, Muller-Otvos found a company preoccupied with status and ego, closed off to a youth culture that was rapidly embracing personalisation, technology and accessible cool rather than elitism, he said.

He spent months talking with financiers, clients and market forecasters, who told him that the world’s richest would become younger, more female and more casual than in previous generations.

“I met with a lot of brilliant people in the company and started to talk to private banks worldwide to better understand ultra-high net worth individuals because they are the target group for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and I must admit I was a new kid on the block in that segment,” he said.

“I learnt that the desire of clients had changed. They wanted to be invited into what we call the house of luxury. It’s more than just offering product. You need to offer service. You need to offer experiences that are very much luxury.”

Younger audience

He began widening the company’s business, laying plans to expand its line-up and revitalise its image in order to connect with a younger audience. “We needed to do something that was not about bragging ‘I own a Rolls-Royce’ but more of a statement of how cool it is to be seen in a Rolls-Royce,” he said.

By 2011, Muller-Otvos was reporting record sales, delivering 3,538 cars (up 31 per cent from the previous year) and saying the brand would soon include new models in addition to the familiar Ghost and Phantom.

Rolls Royce Phantom 2 VIII

Rolls Royce Phantom 2 VIII

In 2013, Rolls-Royce debuted the sporty, two-door Wraith. In 2015, it announced the Dawn convertible. The $355,000 Cullinan, the company’s first SUV, arrived in 2018.

Critics winced at the burgeoning model portfolio and production volumes of a brand that had based its reputation on exclusivity, but Muller-Otvos remained adamant that under his plan, growth would remain healthy, even invigorating. “The introduction of the Cullinan was a turning point for the brand,” Dean said.

Today the behemoth rig with the V12 engine and the company’s first all-wheel drive contributes about 45 per cent of Rolls-Royce’s total sales volume.

Buoyed by expanding sales and younger buyers, Muller-Otvos deepened the company’s customisation programmes. In 2016, he introduced Black Badge, an optional trim package that cloaks the car’s signature Spirit of Ecstasy bonnet ornament and vertical grille, among other components, in black.

Today, Black Badge enjoys a nearly 40 per cent take rate for any given model, fat double-digit margins and imitators at other luxury brands.

The dark design cues and brooding image was among the biggest risks of his career, Muller-Otvos said. When he launched it, he said, a 15 per cent take rate would have been considered success.

“There were moments where we thought, ‘Are we damaging the brand here in a substantial way? Are we spooking existing clients?’” he said. “It was not an easy decision. But risk-taking is part of the business in that role. Decisions can't be calculated by computers, they need to be taken by individuals.”

He also oversaw the development of the company’s modern Coachbuild programme, which allows the wealthiest, most loyal customers the chance to design a car from scratch.

He tested the waters in 2017 with the $13 million Sweptail; next came 2021’s Boat Tail, an open-air four-seater meant to evoke a J Class yacht worth an estimated $28 million.

Earlier this year, the Droptail arrived with a price tag exceeding $30 million – and a one-off timepiece by Audemars Piguet integrated into the dashboard.

By 2019 the number of heavily customised Rolls-Royces had jumped from 80 per cent to 90 per cent across the company; it hit nearly 100 per cent for Phantoms.

Custom additions add 40 per cent or more to the average vehicle price. The evolution has helped boost profit margins, from the low 20 per cent range in 2009 to an estimated 35 per cent to 40 per cent today. Rolls-Royce is the most profitable brand in the BMW Group.

“The ethos of Rolls-Royce within the BMW Group is that the target is profit, not volume,” Muller-Otvos said. “You would never know how many handbags Hermès sold; they are steered by profit. That’s the way you should steer a luxury brand, and that’s the exactly the way the BMW Group sees us.”

He leaves the company with plans for additional growth, though not via new models. The 6,000 or so vehicles Rolls-Royce delivered worldwide last year will remain standard, he said: “We are not lowering prices or entering into lower pricing segments with different new models. There is no appetite at all to go for substantially more volume.”

In January, Rolls-Royce announced it had acquired land near its existing factory in Goodwood, England, primarily to increase its bespoke capacity and capabilities. The company declined to comment on the amount of land obtained and its value.

“The advice I give to my successor is similar to the advice I gave myself in the beginning: Be humble and listen to all the great experts here on the ground,” Muller-Otvos said.

“Try to understand the brand, try to understand your clients, talk to them as often as you can. Build an intricate understanding of which details are relevant for them. Build an intricate understanding of luxury. And listen, listen, listen, listen first, before you make quick decisions.”

An avid fly-fisherman, Muller-Otvos said he will spend his time after November in various consulting and advisory roles.

Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos retires after boosting sales sixfold

thumbnail

Torsten Muller-Otvos, the Rolls-Royce CEO who turned an aging brand into a coveted badge of success for pop stars, athletes and young entrepreneurs, is retiring after 14 years.

  • Muller-Otvos brought new shine to the Rolls-Royce brand and became a leader in the luxury world by attracting a new generation of wealthy buyers.
  • "The brand is contemporary today, I would say cool again," Muller-Otvos told CNBC. "That indicates to me that we got it right, not just me but the entire team."

Rolls-Royce announced Thursday that Muller-Otvos, 63, the longest-serving CEO of Rolls-Royce in nearly a century, will retire on Dec. 1. He will be succeeded by Chris Brownridge, currently chief executive officer of BMW UK.

Muller-Otvos brought new shine to the Rolls-Royce brand and became a leader in the luxury world by attracting a new generation of wealthy buyers. With sleek models like the fastback Wraith, and edgy design schemes like Black Badge, Rolls-Royce's sales grew more than sixfold during his tenure, from 1,000 cars sold in 2010 to more than 6,000 last year.

The average age of a Rolls-Royce buyer fell from 56 to 43. One in 5 buyers today is a celebrity.

"The brand is contemporary today, I would say cool again," Muller-Otvos told CNBC. "That indicates to me that we got it right, not just me but the entire team. That makes me extremely proud as I look back and see what a fabulous, fabulous journey we had."

Muller-Otvos also launched Rolls-Royce into its next big chapter with last year's unveiling of the first fully electric Rolls, called Spectre. The two-door, 577-horsepower behemoth can do zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds and is already sold out in the U.S. through 2025, despite its steep price of more than $413,000.

The big question going forward for Rolls is whether it can maintain its cool factor, and strong sales, if the U.S. economy starts to falter. The U.S. remains its largest market, and while Mutter-Otvos said demand and orders remain strong, the company is always prepared for a correction.

"The luxury market is not immune against any recessionary developments," he said. "For us, the business is still very strong, but it is on a different level compared to what it used to be right after the pandemic. I would say that has normalized now to levels we are used to, but we are still in a very strong position."

Muller-Otvos is the longest-serving CEO of Rolls-Royce since Claude Johnson, who brought Charles Rolls and Henry Royce together in 1904 and served until 1926.

Muller-Otvos said when he joined Rolls-Royce, it was an elite brand that was aging fast. Its signature, the four-door Phantom, was designed for chauffeurs to ferry around members of the graying leisure class smoothly and silently. Muller-Otvos visited private bankers around the world to find out how the wealthy were quickly changing — especially with the rise of tech wealth.

"That was quite an eye-opening moment," he said. "All the private banks told me their clients were getting younger, far more informal and with a lot more women. We said to ourselves, we need something to attract this younger consumer. It needed to be rejuvenated. That's not something you can do in just two years. That is a long, long story that takes many years to achieve."

In 2013, Rolls-Royce unveiled the Wraith, a racy, two-door coupe with a twin-turbo V12 that was designed for the wealthy to drive, rather than to be driven in.

That was followed in 2015 by the Dawn convertible, and in 2019 by the Cullinan SUV, which became a favorite of NBA stars and other big athletes. Rolls-Royce debuted the Black Badge line in 2016, featuring higher performance and an all-black color scheme (including the famous Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament).

Muller-Otvos also ushered in a new era of customization, which lured new customers and bigger profit margins. Dubbed "Bespoke," the program allows Rolls-Royce buyers to choose their own fabrics, paint colors, materials and interior lighting schemes to make a one-of-a-kind Rolls.

The customization program is one reason the average sale price of a Rolls-Royce has doubled since Muller-Otvos took over, to about 500,000 euros ($527,000).

Rolls-Royce Phantom By Spofec Pairs 24-Inch Wheels With 685 HP

The phantom is subtle no more..

SPOFEC program for the Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II

The Rolls-Royce Phantom isn’t exactly the first car that comes to our minds when thinking about performance vehicles. Sure, it has plenty of power thanks to its V12 engine but it’s never meant to be a sporty vehicle. However, Spofec gives the luxury limo a healthy power upgrade combined with a more aggressive look and a lowered stance, turning it into a potent four-door sedan.

Starting with the appearance, you can’t miss those giant wheels. The Phantom Series II now rides on 24-inch polished and brushed Spofec SP3 alloys, developed in cooperation with Vossen and built by the American company using CNC machining technology. Those small openings on the wheels aren’t there just for the look but should provide fresh air to cool the brakes. The rims, Spofec says, are extremely strong and are also suitable for the Phantom EWB long wheelbase model.

Rolls-Royce reveals Phantom inspired by Italian Riviera

Stephen Edelstein

Rolls-Royce this week unveiled its latest one-off commission, the Phantom Inspired by Cinque Terre, which draws its inspiration from the Italian Riviera and its winemaking tradition.

The Cinque Terre—Italian for "five lands"—is composed of the fishing villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, located on the coast of Liguria in northern Italy. They're known for picturesque terraced vineyards overlooking the Mediterranean.

Rolls-Royce tried to channel the atmosphere of the Cinque Terre with various bespoke elements on the Phantom sedan , including a paint color appropriately named Ligurian blue. It's accented with a hand-painted double pin stripe of Navy Blue and Jasmine, including some hand-painted grapes.

The interior is finished in Grace White and Navy Blue leather with Jasmine accents. A grape-branch design is embroidered on the rear door panels, with each piece requiring 9,215 stitches made using two different techniques. The grapes in the design are embroidered in satin stitch, with threads aligned at the angle at which light strikes their surface to give them a shiny finish. The grape leaves were made with a tatami stitch, creating a flatter finish.

The same grape design used with the exterior pin striping is repeated on fold-out picnic tables, made from stainless steel and gold plating. The Phantom also features Rolls' signature Starlight Headliner depicting a map of Italy made from 14,338 individual lights. Five stars represent the Cinque Terre villages.

Rolls-Royce filled the gallery on the Phantom's dashboard with artwork representing an amalgamation of the Cinque Terre villages. The composition was first digitally sketched, then hand-airbrushed using water-based acrylic paint, and sealed with multiple coats of clear lacquer. The villages are also shown in a silver debossing in the glovebox.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Inspired by Cinque Terre

Rolls-Royce's bespoke builds generally don't focus on mechanical changes, so the powertrain wasn't touched. The Phantom is motivated by a twin-turbocharged 6.8-liter V-12 producing 563 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Rolls-Royce claims the Phantom Inspired by Cinque Terre won't be replicated, but it won't be long before we see another extravagant one-off from this most decadent of automakers.

1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II EV Conversion By Electrogenic Revealed With 201 HP

A prewar 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II with an electric twist is set to take the stage at this year’s Salon Privé Concours d’Elegance in the United Kingdom, courtesy of the EV conversion specialists at Electrogenic.

When it originally hit the market in the 1920, the Phantom II was one of the most luxurious cars in the world, powered by a massive 7.7-liter straight-six engine that made modest 40 to 50 horsepower, sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed, non-synchromesh four-speed manual transmission.

Now, in this one-off conversion designed and engineered by Oxford-based Electrogenic for a private collector with a passion for the environment, the stately classic Rolls-Royce features a 93-kilowatt-hour battery pack, a part of which is housed under a hand-shaped and hand-riveted aluminum cowling under the hood, where the original engine used to reside. The other part of the battery pack is located between the chassis rails, resulting in a real-world driving range of 150 miles, according to the British company.

The 150-kilowatt (201-hp) electric motor is also nestled between the chassis rails and delivers 228 pound-feet (310 Newton-meters) of torque to a fixed reduction gear which in turn sends 737 lb ft (1,000 Nm) to the prop shaft.

Several challenges were encountered during the conversion process, Electrogenic says, including preserving the Rolls’ so-called “through-flow” chassis lubrication system, which is crucial to the Phantom II’s silky smooth drive, as well as redesigning the car’s cable-operated braking system, both of which weren’t made with an electric powertrain in mind almost 100 years ago.

The chassis lubrication setup sends oil to the car’s multiple phosphor-bronze bushes that make up the brake and suspension linkages, and the removal of the original straight-six lump rendered the system inoperable. However, the conversion specialist came up with a solution that ensures it continues to work as intended.

As for the braking system, the original brake pedal and levers were located under the bulkhead, in the space that’s now occupied by the large battery pack, so that needed to change. Electrogenic repositioned the levers and cables, retrofitted a hydraulic booster between the newly designed brake pedal and the original cable actuators, and as a modern finishing touch, it calibrated the revised system to work in tandem with the electric motor’s regen function.

The modernized Rolls-Royce also has three driving modes: a normal “Drive,” a range-boosting “Eco,” and a high-performance “Sport” setting, as well as a “regen doubler” mode for the regenerative braking that can be deployed by the driver on long, steep descents.

Furthermore, the interior got a discreet overhaul, with the original controls being repurposed and the original controls reworked. More specifically, the fuel gauge, which was originally a vertical sight glass, is now an LED gauge that shows the battery’s state of charge, the old amp meter is a power gauge that shows the rate of power draw when accelerating and power recuperation under regen, the oil temperature gauge shows charger temperature, and the water temperature gauge shows the temperature of the electric motor.

The cabin also features a state-of-the-art audio system with an integrated subwoofer under the rear seat and full Bluetooth connectivity, all while being hidden from view.

“This is undoubtedly the most complex classic car EV conversion yet attempted, the stunning results really are a testament to the world-leading talents of our team,” said Steve Drummond, Director at Electrogenic. “We’re immensely proud of the results, and we’re delighted to be unveiling it at Salon Privé, here at Blenheim Palace. It’s the perfect place to reveal such a stately piece of British motoring history, now updated and future-proofed for the next hundred years of clean, silent electric motoring.”

The project was completed in 18 months and is now part of the company’s expanding EV conversion portfolio that includes drop-in kits for cars like the Porsche 911 , original Mini, and Jaguar E-Type, as well as bespoke creations such as a Porsche 356C, Citroen DS, and Land Rover Defender.

1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Reborn With Electric Power

The classic Rolls-Royce has 201 horsepower and 150 miles of range.

Not everyone is a fan of converting classic cars to EVs. However, some models would be better off with an all-electric powertrain , and this 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II built by EV conversion specialist Electrogenic is an excellent example.

Rolls-Royces are meant to be luxurious, smooth, and nearly silent. Therefore, an electric motor's effortless, vibration-free, and quiet propulsion is the perfect fit. This EV conversion is better in every single way, especially considering the original 7.7-liter straight-six engine only produced between 40 and 50 horsepower.

rolls royce phantom horse power

The electric powertrain in the Phantom II produces 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque to the fixed reduction gear, delivering 738 lb-ft of torque to the propshaft. According to Electrogenic, it can do 150 miles on a single charge. That's more than enough for a relaxed Sunday afternoon cruise to nowhere.

Even Charles Rolls, the co-founder of Rolls-Royce, dreamed of producing EVs for their noiseless, clean, scentless, and smooth operation. His vision has come to fruition after the British luxury automaker introduced the Spectre , which made its US debut at the recent Monterey Car Week.

Electrogenic claims the car is a "better version of its original self." But before achieving such a feat, the conversion demanded thousands of man-hours.

rolls royce phantom horse power

The battery configuration was tailored to fit the near-century-old body of the Phantom II. There are no structural modifications, as removing the engine and gearbox provided enough space for the EV architecture, including the 93-kWh battery pack.

The conversion team supplemented the design of the "through-flow" chassis lubrication system, while the brake pedals and levers were repositioned to accommodate the large battery pack. A Bluetooth-capable sound system has been neatly incorporated, and new gauges were added to provide the necessary information regarding the EV powertrain. Apart from these modifications, the interior has been kept the same.

"We are delighted to reveal this fabulous EV-converted Phantom II to the world. It has been an immensely complicated and rewarding project, carried out over the course of 18 months by our team of sector-leading engineers, programmers, and fabricators," said Steve Drummond, director of Electrogenic. "Every single member of the Electrogenic team has contributed to this project, and we are all proud to have added our mark to this remarkable motor car, readying it for a further hundred years of dignified, stately - and now clean - motoring."

The 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom II EV is making its public debut at the Salon Prive this week and was commissioned by a private collector who is passionate about the environment.

Electrogenic's EV-converted car portfolio includes a classic Land Rover Defender and a Jaguar Type-E.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is delighted to present Phantom ‘Inspired by Cinque Terre’ – a magnificent, one-of-one Bespoke motor car that captures the enchanting allure and fascinating viticultural heritage of the fabled Italian Riviera. The Cinque Terre – Italian for 'Five Lands' – lies on the rugged coast of Liguria in northern Italy. Perched on the cliffside, the centuries-old fishing villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are internationally famous for their steeply terraced vineyards overlooking the Mediterranean – a true marvel in the world of winemaking. The area’s stunning vineyards are celebrated in intricate Bespoke features throughout this exceptional motor car. The exterior is finished in a deep, rich Ligurian Blue, further accentuated with a hand-applied double coachline in Navy Blue and Jasmine, completed with a delicate grapes motif. The timeless interior, combining Grace White and Navy Blue leather with Jasmine accents, is adorned with a delicate grape-branch embroidery on the rear doors. Each piece comprises 9,215 stitches made using two different techniques. The grapes are embroidered in satin stitch, with the threads carefully aligned according to the angle at which light strikes the surface to give each individual grape a lifelike tone and lustrous quality. For the grape leaf, the Bespoke Collective employed a flatter tatami stitch, which provides a textural contrast and enhances the embroidery’s tactile qualities. The grapes motif is also captured in an intricate inlay on both picnic tables, made with stainless steel and gold plating. The surfaces were first painted in Milori Blue with a subtle sparkle, giving the colour depth and vibrancy. Next, the inlays were precisely applied by hand and sealed with a clear lacquer. Finally, the surface was meticulously sanded and hand-polished to produce a smooth, seamless finish. Overhead, the Bespoke Starlight Headliner is enriched with a map of Italy, embroidered in 14,338 individual stitches. Five glowing stars precisely positioned by hand at the edge of the coastline represent the Cinque Terre villages. Finalising the design took more than a month, with the Bespoke Collective producing numerous iterations to determine the optimum line weight for the embroidery: wide enough to allow the thread to shimmer, yet sufficiently delicate to render Italy’s entire outline in minute and perfect detail. The Gallery within the motor car’s expansive fascia houses a spectacular, specially commissioned artwork, which captures the colours, architecture and vibrant character of Cinque Terre. Representing an imagined amalgamation of elements from all five cliffside villages, the composition was first sketched digitally, then airbrushed by hand using water-based acrylic paint to achieve an incredibly fine level of detail, before being finished with multiple coats of clear lacquer. The painting's focal features are carefully positioned within the Gallery to ensure their exquisite details can be admired easily by all the motor car's occupants. A final flourish lies inside the glove compartment, which contains silver debossing depicting the five villages. Phantom ‘Inspired by Cinque Terre’ has taken its place in the commissioning client’s collection. As a true one-of-one commission, it will never be replicated.

How can I request sponsorship from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars?

We receive many requests for sponsorship, funding and donations, and whilst we are a keen supporter of local charities sadly we cannot support every worthy cause which is brought to our attention. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars selects a house charity each year to be our primary charitable focus, for 2019 the charity we have chosen is Home-Start Arun.

Home-Start Arun promotes the welfare of families in the Arun, Worthing and Adur District Council areas, to alleviate stress and conflict at home and prevent family crisis and breakdown.

What's new for 2024.

The Spectre is a new addition to the Rolls-Royce lineup and its first customers can expect to take delivery by the end of 2023.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Rolls-Royce will let you customize a Spectre pretty much any way you want. And that's a good thing, because, with a price tag this high, we expect buyers will want something truly personalized.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

All Spectres will come with a dual-motor electric powertrain with 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. After taking the Spectre on a test drive, we estimate that the electric powertrain will move the 6559-pound coupe to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. You may scoff at that estimate and point to the Tesla Model S Plaid that hit 60 mph in 2.1 seconds in our testing, but we'd be quick to remind you that Rolls-Royce's brand ethos is more about quiet cruising than mind-bending performance. Although sharp impacts will still make themselves known, Rolls-Royce has installed adaptive suspension to ensure an appropriately isolated ride over all but the biggest bumps and the engineers also made room for a massive amount of sound-deadening material to maintain a whisper quiet cabin. And oh how quiet it is. On the road, the Spectre is so silent inside that your ears pick up almost no sounds until you get up to 80 mph and the wind starts to only slightly penetrate into the tomb-like cabin.

2024 rollsroyce spectre

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The Spectre sports a 102.0-kWh battery borrowed from the BMW i7 which is estimated to provide a driving range of about 260 miles per charge. DC fast-charging is standard, but we'd guess that most Spectre buyers will have a charging system installed at their estates so they aren't forced to wait around in the parking lot of a Walmart like the rest of us.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

While the EPA hasn't weighed in just yet, we expect the Spectre to receive fuel economy ratings of 72 MPGe city and 75 MPGe highway. When we get a chance, we'll take the Spectre on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and update this story with test results. For more information about the Spectre's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Spectre's cabin offers space for four with bucket seats in both rows. Anyone who's familiar with Rolls-Royce's current interior design will find a similarly sybaritic one here, although the company has added several design features that are unique to Spectre. For example, in addition to the brand's signature starry-night headliner, the Spectre's door panels rock a similar twinkle with tiny LED lights sparkling in the area surrounding the armrests. We don't yet know all the details or have a list of options and features but the Spectre should be available with a seemingly endless array of personalization options and material choices.

2024 rollsroyce spectre

Infotainment and Connectivity

All Spectres come with a touchscreen infotainment system nestled into its finely-trimmed dashboard. A digital gauge display is standard too. The technology is well-integrated into the Spectre's interior design and doesn't distract from the ambiance. A Bespoke Audio stereo system is available and sports attractive aluminum speaker grilles.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Rolls-Royce offers several driver-assistance features as standard, including automated emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. For more information about the Spectre's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-keeping assist
  • Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Like the rest of the Rolls-Royce lineup, the Spectre comes with a four-year warranty and maintenance package, which doesn't expire at a certain mileage limit.

  • Limited warranty covers four years or unlimited miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers four years or unlimited miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for four years or unlimited miles
