THE NEXT GENERATION OF ROLLS-ROYCE

Effortless performance. Visionary spirit. A new expression of luxury.

Collage of Spectre showing front grille and side image of Spirit of Ecstasy

Spectre positions Rolls-Royce’s entrance into the electric world as a stamp of leadership — and the beginning of an era that will see the entire model portfolio electrified by 2030.

Its visionary design reinvents timeless iconography, setting a clear path toward the marque’s first all-electric decade.

Captivating clarity of design. Serenity with presence.

Spectre’s uncompromising character is articulated through lines of sculptural purity. Its straightened form is exciting in every sense; the fender line evokes dynamism, while the waft line sharply tapers at the front, creating the illusion of motion even when the car is still. Throughout the journey, Spectre remains self-assured, gliding with unbridled athleticism.

In darkness, we make our own light. Others follow our brilliance.

Rear view shot of Spectre with rear lights on

Designed as a stylistic connection between Spectre’s front and rear, the vertical brightwork of the tail lights pay homage to the iconic Illuminated Grille and its upright vanes.

Rolls-Royce designers affectionately refer to the rear lights as an ‘island of detail’ because of how their smooth panels rise gracefully out from Spectre’s rear silhouette, creating a single meeting point where all lines of the elegant fastback design converge.

Technology and craftsmanship combine, creating something remarkable.

BESPOKE INSTRUMENT DIALS

Seen for the first time on any Rolls-Royce, fully digital Bespoke Instrument Dials are a stunning display of technological craftsmanship, indicative of Spectre’s digital identity and the marque’s unparalleled design proficiency. Spectre owners may select a personalised and complementary dial colour upon commission. Modernising the view from the driver’s seat, the dials’ hands are decorated with a trail of brilliant stars — an enchanting celestial connection to the Starlight Doors, Starlight Headliner, and Illuminated Fascia.

CONNECTED WITH WHISPERS

The Rolls-Royce experience extends beyond the physical drive. With Whispers, our owners-only app, drivers are always in tune with Spectre — the most connected Rolls-Royce yet. Once connected, drivers can send curated Whispers locations, such as restaurant recommendations, directly to the motor car for effortless navigation. Drivers can also discover their nearest charging station, precondition the interior to their optimal temperature, and securely lock and unlock Spectre from their mobile device.

YOUR INTELLIGENT COMPANION

When driving Spectre, a range of needs may arise. Perhaps you may want to activate the massage seat, or require the whereabouts of your nearest charging station. Rather than acting upon these yourself, Eleanor, your intelligent companion, grants your requests.

Bask in the radiance of a thousand stars. And be left spellbound.

A CELESTIAL ENTRANCE

A spellbinding option for the interior, Starlight Doors radiate with 4,796 backlit perforations. Each ‘star’ is positioned by hand, creating a subtle sense of motion within Spectre’s cabin. The constellations form a luminous symphony with the Starlight Headliner and Illuminated Fascia, resulting in an immersive, 360 experience that transcends the boundaries of this celestial dimension.

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre

  • All-new super luxury EV from Rolls-Royce
  • Coupe body style but longer than a Mercedes EQS
  • Twin-motor battery-electric drivetrain makes 577 hp

Paul Horrell

Rolls-Royces have always been about smooth, near-silent propulsion. Since the brand came under the BMW umbrella in 2003, that has come from a V12 engine. But aside from sentimentality over gasoline, there are few reasons that all-electric power won't improve the characteristic R-R experience. That's where the 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre EV comes in.

It's a very large ultra-luxury coupe, powered exclusively by a battery-electric drivetrain. In the Rolls-Royce lineup it fits between two V12s, the top-of-the-range Phantom sedan and the Cullinan SUV. It's the first EV that's so luxurious and decadent, and it signifies a major shift in buyer priority among the super-wealthy. They want sustainability, or at least the impression of it. But it's the decadent design and interior furnishing that'll doubtless appeal most. "A Rolls-Royce first, electric second," they say.

The Spectre has electric motors sourced from BMW that are used front and rear. Combined they make 577 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. They're fed by a battery with a capacity of more than 100 kWh. The battery uses the same chemistry as the one in the BMW iX M60 but is a different shape. There's as yet no quoted time for DC fast charging, although if we look at the BMW, it should peak around 200 kW if you can find a charger that powerful.

Rolls-Royce says it expects the Spectre to have an estimated range of 320 miles on a full charge. That's by using the WLTP standard used in Europe. EPA estimates are always a little different, but a range of around 300 miles seems plausible to us.

That power has a three-ton car to shift, so acceleration won't snap your neck. This is not the car for drag-strip battles with a Tesla S. The quoted time for a sprint from 0 to 60 mph is 4.4 seconds. But a Rolls-Royce isn't about violence; the powertrain will be calibrated to allow drivers to move almost imperceptibly from rest and into the traffic. "Waftability," the company calls it. The captain will have to issue a stern command from the bridge before the ship goes full-steam ahead. But when it does, performance will be imperious.

We've yet to drive the Spectre but we do know chassis technology is a strong point. Four-wheel steering is aimed at improving both agility in tight areas and stability at speed. It also has air springs, sophisticated active stabilizer bars and adaptive dampers to provide the best of both ride comfort and handling composure. A forward-facing camera reads the road for curves and bumps and prepares the chassis systems accordingly.

The two doors are rear-hinged, so the driver and front passenger simply walk in. The doors power-close at the touch of a button. As usual for the marque, an umbrella is embedded in the door in case of inclement weather. Dignity for the occupants is everything.

Once inside, they will find modern, almost minimalist decor, but plush and beautifully crafted. A near-limitless choice of colors and textures is available for the trim. One Rolls-Royce signature dish is the Starlight feature in the headliner, literally thousands of illuminated pinpricks like a galaxy. In the Spectre, buyers can choose to have that effect extended to the doors and dash.

Although it's a two-door coupe, the Spectre can accommodate four adults, Rolls-Royce claims. Its 126.4-inch wheelbase is the same as that of a Mercedes-Benz EQS , and it's actually approximately 7 inches longer than the Mercedes when measured nose to tail.

The instruments are beautifully rendered analog dials in a digital screen, and as an advantage, their design and color can complement the trim. Although most other cars have moved to largely touchscreen control, Rolls-Royce maintains significant numbers of beautifully tactile physical knobs and switches. They include those for the climate system and a screen controller that resembles an iDrive unit from BMW. But you'll have to search hard to find any visible components shared with a BMW. Brand differentiation is impressively thorough.

Like any EV, a phone app will remotely show range, charging status and many other features. Rolls-Royce's app also links to human concierge services, too. Driver assist features are comprehensive, but Rolls-Royces are used by most owners as special-occasion cars. So high-level assistance isn't demanded by the drivers, the company says.

The Spectre is a big step for Rolls-Royce, but parent company BMW has electric drive well sewn up, so there's little reason to fear. Besides, range will be more than sufficient because Rolls-Royce owners don't do road trips — they take the jet. Most of all then, the Spectre has to succeed as a Rolls-Royce, which means majestic, hedonistic, smooth-riding and silent. There's no reason to suppose it won't be exactly that.

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre Is Exactly What You'd Expect an Electric Rolls to Be

Rolls-Royce had an opportunity to redefine itself in the electric era. For better and worse, it didn't take it.

rollsroyce spectre

Quiet is a problem for Rolls-Royce. Didn’t used to be, but now it is. When every electric car has a motor (or motors) aboard as quiet as those in a Rolls, what must Rolls do to distinguish itself from the hoi polloi? And is the massive new 2024 Spectre coupe the right answer?

That’s two too many questions. Because Rolls-Royce is supposed to be unquestionable.

Yup, the Spectre is Rolls-Royce’s first all-electric car. But it doesn’t carry any obvious visual clues as to that. The hood (er, bonnet) still stretches out imperiously, the scale of the thing is utterly regal, and there’s that big “Parthenon” grille up front to announce this vehicle’s majesty. What’s changed is that grille, while aerodynamically optimized, is now pretty much ornamental—what cooling the car needs comes from underneath it—and that long schnoz only covers some plumbing that is itself under another aluminum shroud.

rollsroyce spectre

Also, while that new wider “grille” does in fact look like the Greek Parthenon during the day, at night it now lights up like Caesar’s Palace. There should be a bachelorette party going on behind it.

The Spectre’s structure is a variation on the all-aluminum “Architecture of Luxury” platform introduced in 2017 and which the company currently uses on the Phantom, Ghost and Cullinan. It’s a spectacularly stolid assembly of extrusions and castings that, claims Rolls, is made even stiffer with the addition of the battery tray and 700 kilograms (1543 pounds) and 102 kilowatt hours of lithium-ion batteries. Rolls' claim that the Spectre is 30 percent stiffer than previous can’t be tested without some repeated drop testing. The presumption is that Rolls wouldn’t encourage that.

rollsroyce spectre

That in mind, a Rolls-Royce customer isn’t a mere Tesla or Lucid patron. These are people who have people whose contractors handle mundane tasks like paying for things or charging the electric car. The Spectre’s 260-mile projected range is likely more than enough for someone who has access to private jet aircraft for longer voyages. And who wouldn’t ever be caught embalming themselves with Starbucks while sitting in their Spectre waiting for it to charge. Drinking coffee from a paper cup is almost as bad as flying commercial.

As with all electric cars, the delivery of peak torque (664 lb-ft) starts the moment the accelerator pedal is depressed. Rolls-Royce notoriously and conspicuously used to rate their engines at “adequate.” The combined Spectre motors are “better than adequate” but not thrilling. And Rolls-Royce owners are unlikely to want it any other way.

But even a Rolls-Royce is still a car. And this one is a two-door that rides upon a 126.4-inch wheelbase. That’s the same wheelbase as the Mercedes EQS electric four-door sedan, but the Mercedes is 8.3 inches shorter than the 215.6-inch long Spectre overall.

2023 rolls royce spectre

This is, by far, the largest two-door car currently in production. But by historic standards it’s not that big. The 1976 Cadillac Eldorado, for instance, had a wheelbase a scant tenth of an inch shorter than the Spectre, but was actually 8.5 inches longer overall. The 1979 Lincoln Mark V stretched out 230.3 inches over a 120.4-inch wheelbase. And Rolls’ own 2007-2016 Phantom Drophead Coupe was 220.8 inches long across a 130.7-inch wheelbase. In contrast the Rolls-Royce Wraith coupe which is leaving production this year, and which the Spectre sort of replaces, is a mere waif at 207.4 inches overall on a 122.5-inch wheelbase.

At nearly five feet long, the Spectre’s rear-hinged doors open with theatrical splendor. Since practically every Spectre will be built to its buyer’s whimsy, there’s no ho-hum “standard” interior anyone is likely to actually buy. Instead the seats, dash and starry headliner are easels upon which creativity can be indulged. The car sampled during the press event, for instance, was done up in stark black and white with a definite orca vibe. Other early production vehicles had themes evocative of orchids, British racing cars of the 1930s and, apparently, Barney the dinosaur.

Yes, there are umbrellas in the door jambs. Big ones too.

The doors are so long that a supplementary latch has been added for support. Also, the driver's door will now automatically close when the brake pedal is depressed. That eliminates the risk and drudgery of pressing a button which can result in a scratch manicure or worse.

rollsroyce spectre

Whatever the color scheme or stitching, the comfort is astonishing. There is seating for four and none of the individual thrones feels severely compromised. It’s better up front, but riding in the rear isn’t a banishment or punishing. Of course, the seats are perfectly shaped, the upholstery is exquisite, and the headliners star field can be configured to represent, say, the constellations as they appeared on the night your akita delivered her first litter of pups. It’s not so much a driving environment as it is a luxury capsule. And that’s why the interior deserves criticism. The problem with capsules is that they can be confining. The Spectre’s beltline is high, the windshield and rear window are both severely raked, and the seating positions are low. So, the feeling is one of being encased by rather than inside of the car. Even though this is a roomy, pillarless coupe design, there’s no airiness here. Either one likes this sort of bunkered in feeling, or one goes and gets something else. Like another open plan beach house in Malibu. Or a three-masted sailing yacht.

rollsroyce spectre

The metal vent vanes are wicked cool and Rolls has avoided the tech overkill that’s gumming up so many luxury cars. But no, even with almost infinite customization of the decorations, the Spectre isn’t for everyone. Come on, a Rolls-Royce shouldn’t be for everyone. In fact, a Rolls should be so exclusive that it's practically for no one. Rolls likes to bring up how their vehicles have “waftability” and a “magic carpet ride.” That is the character not of driving, but of confidently and ruthlessly smothering the road. The basic Spectre suspension design is familiar to anyone who has spent time under a recent Roller. The computing power aboard monitors all four wheels and does such radical things as disconnecting the anti-roll bars when the car is headed straight so that each wheel has complete independence when dealing with the road. As on most press previews, the exposure here was limited and that necessarily confines observations to the situations encountered. And in this drive across California’s Napa Valley, there weren’t any situations that came close to upsetting the Spectre.

rollsroyce spectre

The steering is surprisingly talkative, if not chatty, turn-in entering corners is nearly instant, and the aid offered by the rear steering system means the Spectre drives a bit smaller than it is. That’s good.

The base price of the Spectre will be $420,000 in the United States. After the expected personalization, most will carry prices above $500,000. A lot. But it’s a lot of electric car.

rollsroyce spectre

When BMW took over Rolls in the early 2000s, they knocked complacency out of the products. The Phantom and its kin weren’t stodgy, but exciting. The result was a business renaissance for Rolls. But that was 20 years ago. And it’s frustrating—though unsurprising —that the Spectre is a Rolls first and electric car second. Risk averse product planning.

Rolls needs to take bigger swings with its upcoming electrics. Opening that big front hood should reveal something delightful. Bespoke luggage, maybe. An amazing picnic basket would be sweet. As it is, it seems like a lot of hood to cover up almost nothing. In a way, it means the entire front third of the Spectre is decorative.

rollsroyce spectre

Rolls should play with the form their cars take. Electric propulsion opens up all sorts of possibilities. An electric Rolls-Royce doesn’t necessarily need a long hood at all. Nor must it be so thick shouldered. A native electric vehicle doesn’t have to accommodate all the engineering elements an internal combustion car must.

A Rolls-Royce must be excellent and that the Spectre is. But Rolls-Royce doesn’t need to be this conservative. It should exploit the opportunity electrification has put before it to redefine luxury again. Again.

Rolls-Royce Spectre: New Luxury Coupé, With Battery Power

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Rolls-Royce first made public information on its new battery-electric car , the Spectre, last September, but now the car has been through cold weather testing and we have some additional details. Virtually all the ultra-premium brands have embraced electrification, and Bentley—once Rolls’ stablemate—plans to offer nothing but battery EVs by 2030.

Photographs show the EV, heavily disguised, during winter testing near the Arctic Circle. But they do clearly reveal an attractive fastback profile and a steep windshield rake fronting a large and somewhat traditional Rolls grille—there more for brand identification than any need to cool the non-existent gas engine. Rolls claims an “incredibly efficient airflow profile” that could be helpful in extending range.

The company sees the Spectre as a 2024 “electric super coupé,” and a successor to the 2008-2016 Phantom Coupé, of which just 800 were built. The Spectre also sports the Phantom Coupé’s split headlights. (It’s the company’s first car with 23-inch wheels since 1926.) This suggests Spectre will be a big vehicle; the Phantom Coupé was 221 inches long, a foot longer than the Rolls-Royce Wraith, another coupe. For comparison, the Cadillac Escalade is 212 inches long.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

EVs Are Rolls-Royce 3.0

Rolls isn’t giving up on gasoline yet, but with the electric car it’s envisioning “Rolls-Royce 3.0.” While the Rolls-Royce name dates to 1906, the current Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited began producing cars out of Goodwood, West Sussex in 2003.

The first Goodwood vehicle, the Phantom, was Rolls-Royce 1.0. The aluminum spaceframe used to build the framework of the Phantom, Cullinan, Ghost and Coachbuild (highly customized) cars, was 2.0. A spaceframe is a series of 3D, interlocking triangular struts or tubes that create a strong vehicle with less weight; the body panels are mostly cosmetic. Space-frame construction is used on race cars as well as BMW iX EV SUV and the Ford GT supercar.

Electrification is Rolls-Royce 3.0. The company will not use plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engines as a transitional technology. “We have gone straight to all-electric,” says Rolls-Royce spokesman Gerry Spahn. “The performance perfectly accentuates the Rolls-Royce ride experience. [Spectre] is not an electric version of anything—it was fully engineered from the beginning to be an electric car.”

“Refining the all-electric drivetrain that underpins Spectre challenges the very definition of engineering,” said Mihiar Ayoubi, Rolls-Royce’s director of engineering . “Our task is to teach each component and system how to think, behave and communicate like a Rolls-Royce.”

Lofty Price Allows for “Otherwise Expensive” Technologies

“The advantage that vehicles in this market segment have is that their customers are not particularly price sensitive,” says Sam Abuelsamid, principal auto analyst with Guidehouse Insights. “That gives manufacturers some flexibility to use materials that would otherwise be very expensive, such as magnesium and carbon fiber, to get a lighter vehicle.”

Details about the range, horsepower and battery pack are still forthcoming, but on March 30 the company provided some tidbits about what it called “the most connected Rolls-Royce ever,” with a digital drivetrain and electronic chassis engineering and control. Rolls-Royce calls it the “Architecture of Luxury.”

Spectre will sport some seven kilometers (4.3 miles) of cabling (compared to two kilometers, or 1.24 miles), in existing cars. This translates into the ability to write more than 25 times more algorithms, with a dedicated control for each set of functions.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Decentralized Intelligence

What Rolls is calling Decentralized Intelligence is being employed “to harmonize 141,200 sender-receiver interactions. There will be 1,000 electronically controlled functions and 25,000 sub-functions. What exactly all that means to the Spectre owner is unclear, but it does suggest a lot of ways to interact with the car. The Phantom has a mere 51,000 sender-receiver relations, 456 functions and 647 sub-functions.

EV architecture makes possible larger interiors with extra storage, often in the form of a “frunk.” There’s also the advantage of a flat floor and, in the Spectre, a bulkhead moved back to maximize passenger room. We don’t know the battery’s energy capacity, but we do know it weighs 700 kilograms (1,543 pounds) and its location (designed to optimize weight distribution) and materials will be used to help quiet the cabin.

The Spectre has made it through a quarter of its 2.5-million-kilometer (1.5-million-mile) testing program and reportedly shrugged off -40 degrees Centigrade (the same in Fahrenheit) in northern Sweden.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

Spectre Is RR’s First Production EV

Rolls-Royce has never previously built a production EV, but it did dip its toe in with a one-off battery Phantom, 102EX, circa 2011, when journalists were given a chance to drive it around Manhattan. Lotus Engineering had a hand in 102EX, which used a 71-kilowatt-hour battery pack with Dow Kokam lithium-ion cells, plus UQM motors that developed 389 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. The EV claimed a range of 124 miles. Battery technology has made many advances since then.

Mercedes-Maybach will also offer a premium luxury EV, an upscale SUV take on the current EQS—which is luxurious enough. The EQS SUV, anticipated for 2023, is expected to have 370 miles per charge. The two-tone concept car was quite gaudy, with a huge faux front grille and fake fur carpeting. The challenge with all of these cars will be to reduce weight so as to achieve a respectable range without resorting to particularly large battery packs that need large charge times.

The company says the 2024 Spectre will break cover in late 2022 with additional details and a media introduction in mid-2023. Production vehicles will begin to arrive in customers’ hands in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Vehicles most likely to hit 300,000 miles

Rolls-Royce's first series-produced electric model, the 577-horsepower Spectre , made its debut in October 2022. Electrification suits the British luxury brand well, as its clients primarily prefer a smooth and quiet ride over a deep exhaust note that sends chills down your spine. But the company's top executive told Autoblog that finding the right path to the EV segment required over a decade's worth of research.

The electric 102EX prototype from 2011 helped blaze this path. It wasn't approved for production, but it showed Rolls-Royce what to do.

"We never intended at that time that we would bring [the 102EX] to the market," company boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös told me on the sidelines of the 2023 Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance. "I joined Rolls-Royce in 2010, and I was always in the belief that we need to look into alternative propulsions for the brand." Rolls-Royce is part of the BMW Group, and this practice is common throughout the company: BMW and Mini experimented with electric prototypes at that time as well, and the iX5 presented in 2023 will bolster the firm's hydrogen research.

Rolls-Royce learned several lessons from the 102EX project. One was to simply keep on keeping on.

"One clear learning from all of our clients worldwide is to make sure that it is a Rolls-Royce first and an electric car second, not the other way around. [The Spectre] smells like a Rolls-Royce, it feels like a Rolls-Royce, and it sounds like a Rolls-Royce — [that means that] there is no sound, obviously. [There is] no funky dashboard, huge screen , or whatever. That would not be us," he continued.

Customers also told Rolls-Royce not to make a car defined by superlatives. These buyers aren't concerned about having the longest driving range or the quickest acceleration time, largely because they already have a variety of different cars in their fleet plus access to private jets. This also explains why many Rolls-Royce models aren't used as long-distance cars in spite of a powerful V12 engine and a spacious interior.

"It was clear that we don't need to be number one with outrageous range; a range of [about 310 miles] is totally sufficient for our clients. [The EX project] also gave us the right logic behind battery size, what we need to do in terms of body shape, and what the car should look like. It's a very fine balance between range, the size of the battery, and what kind of compromises you suddenly get into the entire design of the car. I'm going to say we learned a lot. [The Spectre] is clearly driven by client feedback, and engineered by client feedback," he concluded.

Not all of the feedback related to the powertrain. The fact that the first series-produced electric Rolls-Royce is a four-seater coupe, not a big SUV like the Cullinan or a battery-powered variant of the Phantom sedan , is telling as well. "The vast majority of our clients are self-drivers. We are no longer a chauffeur-driven brand," he clarified. It sounds like Rolls-Royce may need to develop self-driving technology after all.

Rolls-Royce Spectre review

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Sensational, game-changing peace and quiet, flawless build quality, uncanny comfort, ease of use

Rather showy when times are hard. Even if you can afford one, it’s sold out for a couple of years

What is it?

The new Rolls-Royce coupe model: the Spectre. It’s priced and positioned between the Cullinan SUV and the Phantom flagship in the Rolls-Royce hierarchy (so expect to pay upwards of £330,000 after tax), but this is much more than a niche-filler – it’s a sign of things to come for the double-R brand.

By the end of the decade, every single Rolls-Royce will be fully electric . The Spectre is the first battery-powered model to carry the Spirit of Ecstasy on the prow of its bonnet.

It looks enormous...

The Spectre is a truly immense coupe. That glinting grille is lower and wider than a Phantom’s Parthenon-esque façade and the corners of its bonnet taper gently downwards instead of standing as upright as a bearskin-topped guardsman, but these nods to slippery aerodynamics don’t diminish the gravitational presence this mighty two-door generates.

What are the specs?

Sitting on a Cullinan-related aluminium platform that’s been adapted to fit a 102kWh battery between the sills (making it 30 per cent stiffer as a result) the Spectre is powered by twin motors. The rearward one develops 255bhp, and the front motor adds 480bhp.

Rolls claims the total power developed is equivalent to 576bhp, with 664lb ft of torque at your disposal. Enough to haul three tonnes (well, 2,890kg if you’re counting) of leather, wood and lithium-ion from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds. The top speed is ‘sufficient’, you’d imagine, at 155mph.

But it’s an EV, so what about all that nasty range anxiety?

Not a problem. And that’s not because the Spectre is the world’s longest range EV : it isn’t. Not even close. The official claim is 329 miles (530km), and it’ll charge from 10-80 per cent in 34 minutes so long as you have access to Rolls’ recommended 195kW charger. Don’t expect to see many Spectres queueing for the Instavolts at Peterborough Gateway Services, just off the A1 south of Grantham.

READ MORE Seven things we learned driving the new Rolls-Royce Spectre

No, the reason range is immaterial to the Spectre and its anxiety-free owners is simple. When the company consulted its most faithful clients while drawing up plans for an EV, the response ran something like “ooh, I should think 300 miles is plenty. If I needed to go further than that in a day, I’d take a helicopter. Or my jet.”

So is this the greenest Rolls-Royce ever?

Don’t mistake the Spectre as being an ‘eco-Rolls’. It isn’t swathed in vegan pleather or sustainably-sourced hemp. This is a huge monument to conspicuous consumption and you could argue it’s actually rather vulgar. Sure, the cells in the battery are produced using ‘green electricity’, says Rolls, and there’s a commitment to only use responsibly-sourced rare earth metals in the batteries, but compared to the likes of a Polestar 2 for example, this isn’t a car which you’ll buy because it’s got on eye on lifetime CO2 emissions.

You’ll buy it because it’s a Rolls-Royce, first and foremost. You’ll buy it because it may very well be the finest motor car in the world.

What's the verdict?

The Spectre ruddy well ought to be nigh-on perfect for such titanic money. And yet we suspected that we’d miss being dimly aware of twelve perfectly balanced cylinders whirring away in the middle-distance. Or that we'd struggle to see why you wouldn't save a few hundred grand and just buy a BMW i7.  Perhaps an e-Roller would be sterilised, or an anachronism.

But if anything, they’ve done the impossible here. Electric has enriched the Rolls-Royce. It’s still a galloping, ocean-going, 24-carat indulgence, but with a tasteful specification it’s just about possible to swerve absolute vulgarity.

It’s rich in the decadence of the so-called glory days but gratifyingly simple to operate for a product of 2023. While other manufacturers wrestle with the conundrum of transposing their family heirloom values into an electric future, the age of electric propulsion will suit Rolls-Royce very well indeed.

Over 10 years of research went into the Rolls-Royce Spectre EV

Rolls-Royce unveils Spectre: What to know about the $413,000 electric car

The Spectre is the first of several EVs coming from the storied marque.

Meet the world's first "ultra luxury electric super coupe."

The $413,000 Rolls-Royce Spectre is not the world's most expensive electric vehicle (that title goes to the $2.4 million Rimac Nevera hypercar ). Nor is it the fastest . Its EPA-estimated range of 260 miles falls short of the industry-leading Lucid Air Grand Touring ($154,000), which gets 516 miles on a full charge.

Yet Rolls-Royce will undoubtedly sell every Spectre, a two-door fastback that seats four, it builds next year at the company's headquarters in Goodwood, England.

"Demand has been incredible. While we haven't even shown Spectre publicly, we have more hard orders already than we had in total for Dawn or Cullinan," Martin Fritsches, president and CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars America, told ABC News, referring to the company's convertible and SUV models. "We have already seen hundreds of our clients visit the Bespoke design studios in Goodwood to start configuring their Spectre commission."

PHOTO: The Spectre coupe can seat four passengers.

Last year, the 117-year-old brand decided it would cease production of its gas-guzzling, 12-cylinder engines and replace its entire lineup with EVs by 2030. The Spectre, the company's first electric vehicle, will be available starting in late 2023. Bespoke customizations can easily add 20% more in value to the Spectre's MSRP, Fritsches noted.

The 6,559-pound coupe sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and delivers 664 ft-lb of torque and 577 horsepower. Designers gave the Spectre 23-inch wheels along with the widest grille ever put on a Rolls-Royce. Even the brand's famous Spirit of Ecstasy mascot got a makeover: The figurine was remodeled to have a lower, more dynamic stance that's also aerodynamic. Moreover, Spectre is the first Rolls to offer Starlight Doors, which add 4,796 illuminated "stars" to the interior.

PHOTO: Spectre is available with Starlight Doors.

"Spectre represents the start of our electric era [and] has been under development for many years," Fritsches said. "The prime directive of this project was to ensure that Spectre is a Rolls-Royce first and foremost and happens to be powered as an electric car second."

PHOTO: The Spirit of Ecstasy mascot got a makeover for the Spectre: It now has a lower, more dynamic stance.

MORE: Electric vehicles are coming fast and furious. Here's how the new models stack up

Ivan Drury, director of insights at Edmunds, expects the Spectre to be an instant hit for Rolls-Royce, potentially even exceeding demand for the Cullinan SUV , the company's top-selling model.

"There will be a lot of hand-raisers and it will be sold out for years," Drury told ABC News. "The price of these vehicles has no meaning to customers. Rolls-Royce operates on a different level than anyone else -- it has guaranteed sales."

PHOTO: Spectre, with a starting price of $413K, can easily cost more with bespoke customizations.

Even a global recession , which some market strategists are predicting this year, would have little if any impact on the company's future sales, according to Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Cox Automotive.

"Expensive cars have done very well over the last few years and EVs in general are bought by the most affluent people," Krebs told ABC News. "The demographic of customers who buy these vehicles are less affected by the economy."

In 2021, Rolls-Royce delivered a record 5,586 vehicles to clients around the world, a 49% increase from 2020. Rolls-Royce has already sold 4,701 vehicles in the first nine months of 2022, with customer orders extending well into next year, Fritsches said.

The introduction of the Spectre could put pressure on Tesla, the undisputed EV leader, and German carmaker Porsche, which has seen customers rapidly shift to its all-electric Taycan, with sales last year outpacing the brand's venerable 911 sports car. EVS are the fastest-growing auto segment in the U.S., accounting for 6.4% of the total market, up from 2.6% last year, Krebs said. Tesla has reported a 64% rise in sales this year though its stronghold on the market has started to slip with the arrival of more EVs.

General Motors' Cadillac division, however, may be Rolls-Royce's most serious competitor in the ultra-luxe space. Its new $300,000 Celestiq electric concept will lead the brand's electric future and become Cadillac's new flagship vehicle, according to company executives. Like the Spectre, the Celestiq will be hand-built, handcrafted and customized to owners' discerning specifications. It arrives by 2025.

PHOTO: The $300K Celestiq is an all-electric Cadillac that will be hand-built and customized to buyers' specifications.

MORE: Silver or white? No way. More drivers are demanding customization

Dan Pund, executive editor of Road & Track, said EVs present a new challenge to high-end automakers: how to stand out when the number of cylinders and driving engagement no longer matters.

"Powertrain is not the differentiating factor anymore -- styling now is so important," Pund told ABC News.

PHOTO: Rolls-Royce says the Spectre is the "spiritual successor" to the Phantom coupe.

As for Rolls-Royce's electric ambitions, Pund said customers can anticipate the same level of comfort and luxury they have always sought in the brand.

"It makes sense for them to go electric," he said. "Enormous torque, smooth, quiet rides -- this is what the company is known for."

Fritsches said the Spectre, much like the marque's Black Badge models , will keep the company relevant in an industry that's quickly moving away from gas-powered conveyances.

"We are already seeing newcomers to Rolls-Royce who have been waiting for us to make the commitment to electrification," he said.

Rolls-Royce Spectre (2023): Preis/Reichweite Das kostet der erste Elektro-Rolls

rolls royce spectre kaufen

BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce will adopt Tesla charge port in US, Canada

Bengt Halvorson

BMW announced Tuesday that it will adopt the Tesla charge port and corresponding North American Charging Standard (NACS) for battery electric models in the U.S. and Canada starting in 2025.

Drivers of BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce EVs with CCS charge ports will gain access to Tesla Supercharger stations using an adapter, starting in early 2025.

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre

2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre

BMW’s lineup of EVs in the U.S. includes the i4 hatchback, i7 sedan, and iX SUV, while the 2024 BMW i5 hatchback is coming soon. A new generation of Mini Cooper and Countryman EVs is coming next year, for the 2025 model year. And on the Rolls-Royce side, the 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre electric coupe is arriving late this year.

Looking ahead, BMW’s next-generation EVs, signaled by the design of the Vision Neue Klasse concept and switching to cylindrical battery cells, may be among the first to get NACS in the U.S. from the start.

The three BMW Group brands will also adopt the NACS port as its native charging tech for the U.S. and Canada starting in 2025, the company said. It didn’t clarify whether that means models will get the new interface as they’re redesigned or replaced, or whether all of the group’s EVs will get NACS soon thereafter.

BMW noted that this agreement is in addition to its commitment with six other automakers to create a new charging network in North America . That network has already promised to provide access to EVs using both CCS and NACS, with support for peak-rate 800-volt charging as well as NACS V4, which may become an essential component for some EVs with large batteries that shift to the new standard.

I drove a $400,000 Rolls-Royce and a $140,000 Mercedes and found what the extra $260,000 gets you

  • Is a $400,000 Rolls-Royce really that much better than a $140,000 Mercedes?
  • I drove both luxury cars to find out.
  • The Mercedes S-Class sedan is nice — but the Rolls-Royce Ghost is even more comfortable and luxurious.

Insider Today

Before I drove one, I couldn't quite fathom why somebody would spend close to a half-million dollars on a Rolls-Royce when there are plenty of very luxurious cars out there that cost half or even a quarter as much. I wondered: Is a Rolls really that much nicer than, say, a nicely optioned Mercedes-Benz?

After driving a Rolls-Royce for the first time, well, I stopped wondering and started believing.

I recently got behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce Ghost (worth about $400,000) and a Mercedes S-Class sedan (MSRP: $139,900) — and learned firsthand the difference between automotive opulence and regular old luxury.

Mercedes’ top-of-the-line sedan is a favorite of wealthy, important folks of all stripes for a reason.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

The S Class is classy (pun intended), enormously spacious, and provides a degree of all-around comfort that’s almost unparalleled.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

The S580e Mercedes lent me came decked out in rich leather and an interesting woven pattern on the dashboard.

The quilted leather seats were plush yet supportive and had a few tricks up their sleeves: heating, cooling, and massage functions.

Elegant, colorful lighting striped throughout the cabin. I could further change the mood by turning on the fragrance setting, which distributes perfume through the air vents.

The sound system was sublime. The neck pillows were divine.

In motion, the S580e effortlessly absorbed bumps in the road and stayed whisper-quiet.

The backlit door handles popped out to greet me whenever I approached with the key fob.

All this is to say that an S Class is, for all intents and purposes, an extremely nice place to pass the time.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Cruising around in one, you might even get the sense that life couldn’t possibly get any easier — until you pull up at a stoplight next to a Rolls-Royce Ghost.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Spending as much as a private-college education on your luxury sedan takes the experience the extra mile.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Sure, a Mercedes may have soft-close doors, but in a Ghost you don’t need to close the doors at all. Hop in and hold down a button in the center console and your door will magically shut for you.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

An S-Class interior is nicer than almost anything else — don’t get me wrong.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Read more: I compared Tesla rivals from Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis — and found the decision boils down to if you prefer style, luxury, or performance

But a Rolls serves up a kind of elegant simplicity and attention to detail that’s tough to compete with.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

My test car was awash in soft leather and had genuine wood accents.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

There was glistening metal all over. The air vents were solid chunks of aluminum that swiveled ever so smoothly in their housings.

Read more: I tested an electric and a gas-powered Rolls-Royce — and I think the $420,000 Spectre EV is the one to buy for a simple reason

The S Class had sleek buttons controlling how much air the vents put out. That’s nice, but in a Rolls-Royce, you get sturdy metal plungers.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

The Ghost provided an analog clock and lots of satisfying switches. That’s a contrast to the Benz’s digitized experience.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

I especially liked the crisp digital gauges that had an old-school aesthetic.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Read more: I got chauffeured in a $500,000 Rolls-Royce and saw firsthand how nice life is for the .1%

My Ghost came with Rolls-Royce’s famous Starlight headliner, which relies on thousands of hand-cut, fiber-optic lights to mimic the look of a glistening night sky.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

The Ghost glided down the road like a kayak on a glassy lake — gently rocking in response to the road but never too bothered by it.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Other features that set the Ghost apart from regular luxury cars: Center caps on the wheels that stay upright even when the car is in motion, rear-hinged rear doors, and umbrellas in the doors.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

And if this particular Rolls isn’t quite your speed (the orange was a questionable choice, in my opinion), the company offers essentially endless customization options, so you can pick the perfect paint color and interior materials for you — for a price, of course.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

The other thing you’re paying for in a Rolls-Royce is exclusivity. On that front, Mercedes can’t hold a candle.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

All Rolls-Royces are hand-assembled in a single factory in England that produced some 6,000 vehicles last year. You don’t see them every day — and when you do, you can’t help but gawk.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

Mercedes, on the other hand, sells millions of cars a year. In just the first half of 2023 in the US alone, Mercedes sold over 6,000 S Classes.

rolls royce spectre kaufen

If you’re having trouble choosing between these two lavish cars, remember this: If you’re in the position to shop for a Rolls-Royce, odds are you don’t have to choose at all.

Rolls-Royce Spectre

120 Kilometer Reichweite in zehn Minuten, so BMW.

2024 Rolls-Royce Ghost Ékleipsis Is for Royals Who Like the Solar Eclipse

The moon will partially block the sun in much of the Western Hemisphere this Saturday, and Rolls-Royce is honoring the event with a special-edition Ghost.

Headshot of Caleb Miller

  • The 2024 Rolls-Royce Ghost Ékleipsis celebrates the natural majesty of the solar eclipse with special copper paint and Mandarin orange accents.
  • The cabin is decked out with an elaborate dashboard artwork and a bejeweled timepiece, as well as a unique Starlight headliner that mimics the sequence of an eclipse.
  • Only 25 examples are being built, and they are all already sold.

rolls royce ghost ekleipsis

The Ékleipsis is painted in Lyrical Copper, lending the Ghost a moody aura in dark settings but sparkling under brighter lighting. A bright orange hue called Mandarin appears on the front bumper and brake calipers, "recalling the intense pulses of sunlight witnessed as the eclipse progresses," Rolls-Royce says. A delicate, hand-painted Mandarin coachline also runs along the Ghost's shoulder line, with a dotted motif meant to represent the "transition from sunlight to darkness."

rolls royce ghost ekleipsis

Rolls-Royce is well-known for its Starlight headliner, with hundreds of tiny lights embedded into the car's ceiling to emulate the night sky. The Ékleipsis has a unique setup, with an animation that plays when the doors close and engine is started that displays a circle of 940 "stars" representing the corona of light that peeks around the moon during the eclipse, surrounded by 192 other LEDs that act as the stars that suddenly become visible during daytime when a total eclipse occurs. The animation lasts seven minutes and 31 seconds, the maximum duration of a total solar eclipse, after which all of the LED stars illuminate. Rolls-Royce says this animation took a full year to develop.

rolls royce ghost ekleipsis

On the dashboard sits an intricate artwork consisting of 1846 laser-etched "stars," with the dazzling display taking a singular technician 100 hours to create. To the left sits a unique timepiece with a 0.5-carat diamond integrated into the clock's bezel, inspired by the "diamond ring" effect that sees a single point of light become visible right before and after the moon moves in front of the sun. The two-tone seats have over 200,000 perforations in a unique pattern, exposing Mandarin accents under the black leather.

rolls royce ghost ekleipsis

Rolls-Royce fitted a few other neat touches: the door sill plates are illuminated and the umbrella hidden in the doors—a Rolls-Royce staple—wears Mandarin piping. The Ghost Ékleipsis also comes with a unique indoor car cover. Rolls-Royce says all 25 examples have been claimed, and while no price was revealed, we bet those customers paid a pretty penny more than the Ghost's $351,000 starting price.
