Horror Film Sites and Haunted Houses to Visit in North ‘Scarolina’

Want a thrill? Visit North Carolina during spooky season, where horror film sites and haunted attractions offer scares, screams and thrills.

If you embrace the Halloween season and delight in all things haunted, scary and grisly – North Carolina delivers across the board. And filmmakers totally agree. These horror movies and cult classics all used North Carolina’s varied geography, beautiful architecture, waterfront towns and world-class film sets to bring murderous and haunted storylines to life.

Be sure to check out the bonus section of haunted houses and attractions that will amp up your spooky getaway even more.

Horror Film Sites

scariest haunted house in charlotte nc

Though it’s the fifth movie in this beloved franchise, Scream (2022) shares its name with the original. To see where Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette all shot scenes, start at the Wilmington Riverwalk – it can be spotted in the trailer when Sidney answers a chilling phone call. Then plan a fun night of grooving to some live music at Reggie’s 42nd Street Tavern ; it was also used for filming.

Halloween Kills

scariest haunted house in charlotte nc

In the first of two sequels closing out this legendary scary movie franchise, Halloween Kills continues to follow Michael Myers and his murderous destruction. But don’t worry – though the film is scary, the settings are anything but. Pack a picnic and head to Wilmington’s Wallace Park or Veterans Park, where some outdoor scenes were filmed. Or order a local beer and jam to blues music at The Rusty Nail – it stands in as Mick’s Bar and Grill in the movie. To complete your Halloween -inspired visit, follow in Jamie Lee Curtis’ footsteps and stop for the “ best food and view ” at The George , pose for a photo next to Michael Myers at the Museum of the Bizarre , and spend the night amid luxurious amenities at Dreamers Welcome .

I Know What You Did Last Summer

scariest haunted house in charlotte nc

Released in 1997, this famed slasher film with a hook-wielding killer is loosely based on a 1973 novel by the same name. Much of the film was shot in Southport , taking advantage of the town’s waterfront location. For instance, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character lives near the Cape Fear River on Short Street (where she receives the fateful, “I know what you did …” note). And the film’s beauty pageant, where Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character was crowned Croaker Queen, is held in the historic and still-in-use Amuzu Theatre . To eat or drink at spots that appear in the movie, head to American Fish Company (as Ollie’s Oyster Bar) or Fishy Fishy Café (as Southport Muscle).

Cabin Fever & Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever

The hit horror comedy film Cabin Fever (2002) features a group of college students who rent a cabin and develop a flesh-eating virus. The cabin used in the film was located in Camp Raven Knob , a 3,200-acre scouting reservation near Mount Airy. To stock up on fresh sandwiches and fried pies, stop by Priddy’s General Store in Danbury – it’s where we meet Dennis, the boy who likes pancakes and biting people. Take your time perusing the old-timey quaintness, which is as accurate in real life as it is in the film. For the sequel, so much fake blood was used on the set at historic Williston Middle School that the storm drains were said to be running red (it was harmless food-based dye).

The Conjuring

Released in 2013, The Conjuring is a supernatural horror film based on the experiences of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) as they assist the Perron family with disturbing events in their farmhouse. The home in the film is a two-story, 5,000 square-foot house along the Black River in Currie (a half hour northwest of Wilmington), but it was used only for exterior shots. A replica of the house was then built on a sound stage. Other filming locations include the Carolina Apartments, the Kenan Memorial Fountain, UNC Wilmington’s campus and the Carolinian Inn . Take a Ghost Walk Tour of Old Wilmington to stroll past sites used for this film, plus other burial grounds and haunted homes.

Biltmore House with Italian Garden pond in foreground

This 2001 psychological horror film stars Anthony Hopkins as cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter and Julianne Moore as FBI Special Agent Clarice Starling. Much of the filming was completed at Asheville’s Biltmore , which was the “home” of disfigured revenge-seeking Mason Verger (Gary Oldman). Biltmore’s iconic Lodge Gate, huge library, the tapestry room, Antler Hill Barn and the estate’s sprawling grounds can all be spotted in the film. There were also scenes filmed along the Blue Ridge Parkway and at The Hot Dog King on Biltmore Avenue. Established in 1979, The Hot Dog King (“The original home of the hot dog in Asheville”) is no longer there, but they do have locations in Fairview, Arden, Candler and Swannanoa.

Evil Dead II

Mostly shot in and around Wadesboro, Evil Dead II (1987) is a dark comedy horror film with a cult following. A cabin was built in the woods specifically for this film, and it was used for exterior shots while much of the interior shots took place in a nearby junior high school. Take a walk in the Wadesboro woods – if you dare – including heavily wooded Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge to put yourself into the setting. There’s also an added bonus for film buffs: Steven Spielberg filmed The Color Purple (1985) in Wadesboro just a couple of years before, and the large white farmhouse on Diggs Road that’s immediately recognizable from the film also acted as the production office for Evil Dead II .

Director Leigh Janiak needed the look and feel of a Canadian lake community to bring her dream-turned-nightmare horror flick to life – and she found the perfect spot in Lake Summit near Hendersonville. Though the lake is private, you can still delve into the production and eat like the cast and crew – which included Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway – did with visits to nearby Hubba Hubba Smokehouse (it promises to become your “happy place”) and Flat Rock Village Bakery (its massive brick oven works wonders).

Alien Abduction

Presented as a “found-footage” science fiction horror film, Alien Abduction portrays a family on a camping trip to Brown Mountain in Pisgah National Forest – where one night they see flashing lights that definitely aren’t stars. Director Matty Beckerman was reportedly inspired to make the film while living in North Carolina and hearing stories about the fabled Brown Mountain Lights , inexplicable and mysterious lights emanating from the mountains that are still seen by locals and travelers today.

Sleepy Hollow

scariest haunted house in charlotte nc

It’s pretty hard to roam Wilmington and not stumble upon sites from the TV series Sleepy Hollow , a hit supernatural drama. On a self-guided tour in the Historic District alone, you’ll see the kitchen from the “Sin Eater” episode (at Bellamy Mansion Museum ); the dining room where the Horseman beheads the four Masons (at Graystone Inn , which is currently closed for renovations); the outside of Sleepy Hollow Sheriff Department (at Historic New Hanover County Courthouse); and so many more. A full Sleepy Hollow -inspired day just might be on the itinerary.

Released in 1985, this horror-thriller film is a Stephen King original shot throughout Wilmington. It starred huge names such as Drew Barrymore and James Woods. The plot revolves around three twisted tales connected by a mysterious cat, including one about a troll living in young Barrymore’s home on Forest Hills Drive. The First Presbyterian Church on South Third Street is also where Dick Morrison visits his daughter’s school, Saint Stephen’s School for the Exceptional, in “Quitters, Inc.,” one of the tales in the film.

Silver Bullet

Stephen King’s work is once again shown on the screen in Silver Bullet , a cult classic. Film sites are littered across Wilmington and nearby Burgaw , including the Burgaw Courthouse Square, Pender Memorial Park, and Greenfield Park (where fireworks are shot off, plus where Jane, Marty and Uncle Red made the silver bullet). Trade in horror for magic when you catch a concert at the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater under hundred-year-old oak trees. But for more in terror from the expert himself, additional King screenplays filmed in the area include Firestarter , Maximum Overdrive and The Night Flier .

Haunted Attractions

1 replica of the michael myers house.

Take a tour of a life-size replica of the famous Michael Myers house from John Carpenter's 1978 classic Halloween . The visit includes a 15-minute tour of the outside with a brief history lesson about the original house. Be sure to check the attraction’s website for visit schedule updates.

2 SCarowinds

Charlotte’s well-known amusement park goes from “theme park” to “scream park” during the fall months. Experience the excitement of roller-coaster rides along with the horror of haunted houses and scary performances. At SCarowinds, hundreds of monsters are waiting to torment you – enter the gates if you dare.

3 Woods of Terror on Church Street

Woods of Terror is a haunted theme park featuring more than 10 attractions, including Arachnophobia – a haunted house full of spiders, snakes and roaches. This spooky theme park is recommended for adults and teens, but younger kids are allowed under parental supervision.

4 Lake Hickory Haunts

Lake Hickory Haunts consists of about a dozen different haunted attractions surrounding a large body of water for maximum spookiness. Check its calendar for special events such as concerts and photo ops with screen-used scary movie props.

5 The 13th Acre

The 13th Acre is a haunted walking tour through dark, mysterious woods. Enter with caution, however, because once you step past the entrance, you’ll only have one chance to turn around. If you miss it, you will have to face your fears along the way.

6 Hollerin Haunts Hayride

Hollerin Haunts Hayride offers three different attractions: The Haunted Hayride and The Darkness are designed to scare, while The NC Zombie Hunt allows the frightened to fight back with paintball guns.

7 Hickory Grove Haunted Trail

Be prepared for your worst nightmares to come alive at Hickory Grove Haunted Trail, which has been in the scaring business for more than 25 years. Located in the backwoods of South Fork River at Mountain View Golf Center in Gastonia, the haunted trail is open in September and October.

8 Spookywoods at Kersey Valley

Spookywoods Haunted Attraction was created in 1985 after several teenagers dared one another to enter an abandoned farmhouse. After receiving a good scare from several bats, the group decided to share their fears with others. These days, its spooky attractions span over an 80-acre farm with several themes and sets.

9 Panic Attack Haunted Attraction

Drive down dark coastal backroads to Panic Attack Haunted Attraction in Nakina near the North Carolina border. You’ll face your fears by coming face to face with clowns, zombies, chainsaw maniacs and many other haunted characters.

10 The Haunted Farm

Located in rural farmland near Hendersonville, The Haunted Farm sits on a mysterious piece of land – locals tell the story of a deadly feud between the Lively and Tate families years ago. The alleged curses, bloodshed, ghosts and haunts lure visitors to the farm during autumn. There’s no age limit, so proceed at your own risk.

This Haunted Horror Attraction In Archdale Will Have You Hype For Halloween

Just an hour outside of Charlotte is one of the nation's scariest haunts.

Jessica Ramos

Are you ready to be terrified?

Maybe one of the greatest transformations in North Carolina is the transition from family friendly farm attraction known as Kersey Valley into its sinister alter-ego. By day, you and the entire family can enjoy an afternoon spent axe throwing, sunflower gazing, and zip-lining. By night, prepare for terrifying haunts and thrills. According to the website,” From the moment you arrive on the property, you are fair game to each and every haunted creature residing here.” Welcome to Spooky Woods.

scariest haunted house in charlotte nc

Spooky Woods, North Carolina’s answer to Halloween, is the largest haunt in the state, and has been ranked as part of the top haunts in all the nation from various local magazines. After three decades of development (the haunt now covers the majority of the 60 acre farm), Spooky Woods and the adjacent haunted house are lucky to have a group of talented artists and builders that are here to make each year scarier than the last.

scariest haunted house in charlotte nc

The appeal of Spooky Woods is in their themed mazes that boast an array of special effects and terrifying surprises. Some recent themes have been The Slaughterhouse maze, their whimsical Puppet Theater, and their Hedge Maze that return annually, but each year they add in some never-before-seen mazes to keep guests on their toes. You’ll be in for an experience that stimulates the senses with lights, sounds, and touch, and just a warning, you may also come into contact with a “liquid substance” so be prepared for that if you’re squeamish.

If all of the expertly crafted mazes weren’t enough, you can also participate in some other night time activities on the property like axe throwing, a nightly zip line, and the first ever haunted train ride in North Carolina, the Kersey Valley Express.

Spooky Woods was recently voted one of the nation’s scariest for 2022 on their Facebook page and we’re so excited for what this spooky season brings us at Kersey Valley.

THE SCARIEST CHARLOTTE HAUNTED HOUSE!!

Boogerwoods.

Rockwell, North Carolina

Boogerwoods is named for the scary creatures that inhabit it. Do you dare enter their realm?

This North Carolina haunted house features a walkthrough through their unique sets, which lasts a whopping 50 minutes. That’s huge for a haunted house!

Guests will travel down a mineshaft, but the workers may be more interested in using their pickaxes to attack you than hunt for diamonds… The trippy time tunnel will make anyone lose their footing, and their Dollhouse features an all-new torture chamber. Other sets include a campground, mechanic’s shop, maze, and taxi!

You’ll be taken through this Charlotte haunted house by two or more guides. They make sure that the crowd moves on time and that everyone is safe, but they’re also integral to the experience. They provide a show for everyone who dares to enter, and you’ll remember them long after you leave.

Boogerwoods donates all of its proceeds to important medical research. Who knew you could be chased by a man with a chainsaw and give to charity in the same night?

Located in Rockwell, North Carolina, it’s less than an hour away from Charlotte. This easy day trip is a great bonding experience for anyone, including families!

Ready to enter the Boogerwoods? You might not make it out alive…

BRINGING HOLLYWOOD TO A NORTH CAROLINA HAUNTED HOUSE

THE ORIGINAL HOLLYWOOD HORROR SHOW

Snow Camp, North Carolina

Do you feel like there aren’t any haunted houses near me with Hollywood-style special effects? Think again!

The Original Hollywood Horror Show was created by actual filmmakers The Jones Brothers. They have credits as director, producer, actor, special effects, makeup, and production design for hundreds of films and television shows. Their work has been featured in some of Hollywood’s largest blockbuster movies. Now they’ve chosen to use their expertise to create the creepiest haunted house in NC!

Since the creators are from Hollywood, they’ve spared no expense to make your experience feel like you’re in the best big budget horror film. The Ghost Pirates of the Caribbean is a stunt show where viewers will be taken into the world of The Black Pearl. You’ll be astounded by the feats of famous pirates as they sail the seven seas.

Their The Last Ride attraction will hit home in a way that most haunted houses don’t. During this experience, you’ll live out your own funeral, from coffin to grave, in the show’s most theatrical style. You’ll be closed in a coffin, where you can hear sounds and even take in some smells! There’s even an infrared camera inside the coffin that will capture your reactions, which are broadcast on a TV outside for the enjoyment of the bystanders. If you’re worried about your own mortality, this might not be the attraction for you!

Another killer opportunity for fun is Hellraiser’s Vortex, where you’ll get to see the true future of horror. This death-defying trip will let you experience the fear of the Hellraiser movies, all up close and personal.

You can also watch a magic show like no other at The Original Hollywood Horror Show . Magicians on stage will perform some of Houdini’s most famous tricks, as well as other famous escape acts. You’ll be on the edge of your seat, glad you’re safe in the audience.

Facebook users rated this haunted attraction as one of the Top 10 in the nation, which was posted about by the Travel Channel . Get your tickets today!

FIVE HAUNTED HOUSES IN NC FOR ONE PRICE!

HAUNTED FOREST AT PANIC POINT

Youngsville, North Carolina

Looking for North Carolina’s best haunted trail? You’ve come to the right place.

Haunted Forest at Panic Point offers five haunted attractions, all of them guaranteed to make your teeth chatter in fear!

Their main attraction is the Haunted Forest. Created 11 years ago, it’s been improved over and over, standing the tests of time. It offers the most scenes, haunters, and screams at Panic Point. Some of the sights you’ll notice around you include the Butcher Shop, Dollhouse, Voodoo Shack, Junkyard, Pallet Maze, Sanatorium, Motel, Crypt, Abbey, Killer’s Cabin, and Clown House.

Some of the guests describe the most terrifying actor they saw on the trail, only for staff to realize no one matches that description… So stay on the trail!

Next is the Dark Trail and its frightful (but fictional) story. In this area, Doomsday preppers set up a compound in the woods and started recruiting other disturbed people to help them work to prepare for The End. They kicked out two men for stealing moonshine, and these exiles decided to plot their revenge. They mixed up a few pounds of mutagen, then blanketed the entire compound in a mist of deadly vapor using a crop duster!

This biological weapon has left the land and the inhabitants permanently changed. The only more gnarled things than the preppers’ bodies are their minds… You’ll need to avoid contact with them as you travel through scenes like The Bunker, Swamp, and Vortex. Don’t let them touch you!

Another attraction is the Haunted Hayride, filled with seven spooky scenes. The monsters thirst for your blood… Killers in the Corn is like a traditional corn maze…except there are killers inside! Can you make it out?

Haunted Forest at Panic Point is also planning two new attractions, including Menacing Maze, another maze but with a mystery theme, and Carny Crypt, a repaired carnival trailer that might still have some energy from its old residents. Enter at your own risk!

This haunted house near me is rated PG-13, with children under 8 not allowed inside and kids between 9-12 must have adult supervision. You can buy one ticket to see everything, or choose your adventures à la carte. How many scares can you handle?

If you choose to do everything the Haunted Forest at Panic Point has to offer you, you’ll get to see 32 unique scenes and 70 horrifying creatures. Plus, it will take over two hours to make your whole way through.

Can you walk the whole trail without panicking too much? Only time will tell!

Whether you are an adrenaline junkie seeking the thrills of a haunted house, a horror movie buff looking to step into iconic scenes straight out of the movies, or looking for a fun, family-friendly way to celebrate, there really is something for everyone in North Carolina.

  • Hollerin Haunts Hayride

Make no mistake, Hollerin Haunts is not your average hayride. Prepare yourself for a 30-minute ride through bone-chilling scenes with characters that will “ scare the yell out of you.” If you crave even more of a thrill, fight off a zombie insurgency at their NC Zombie Hunt, where you can help take out zombies with a paintball gun. Not afraid of the dark? You might be after taking a walk through pitch-black darkness to see what evils come about in their haunted trail, The Darkness. You can purchase tickets for each attraction individually or grab a package deal for all three attractions for $40.

Open select dates September 22 – November 4, 2023

Allow your voice to recover from the screams and check out the Haunted Midway in between to enjoy food and beverages, games, and live music. There is no age restriction but it is only recommended for teens and adults. All you need is one ticket to experience all 16 attractions, which varies by the date of your visit and starts at $37.

Located just northwest of Durham, this drive-through haunt recreates scenes and characters from popular horror movies such as Ghostbusters, It, Beetlejuice, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and more. • Pinhead’s Graveyard

If you have ever dreamed of coming face-to-face with classic horror movie villains, Pinhead’s Graveyard is the haunted attraction for you. Located in a century-old building in downtown Canton, the indoor attraction focuses on iconic horror movies complete with elaborate sets, animatronics, and special effects that are straight out of the movies. Visitors will be terrorized by the likes of Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Pennywise, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, Pinhead, and more. If that wasn’t enough, on select nights you can meet the celebrities who played some of these quintessential horror movie characters. Pinhead’s Graveyard prides itself on being family friendly and will tone down the characters for groups with children. Tickets start at $30 for visitors ages 12 and up, and $20 for visitors ages 6-10 or 65 and up.

  • Chapel of Horrors

Bringing the thrills and chills to the coast is one of Wilmington’s only haunted houses, Chapel of Horrors. In its inaugural year, Chapel of Horrors (spearheaded by movie industry makeup artists, special effects engineers, and local terror writers) is an immersive experience placing visitors into an active plot of a horror movie, as an ominous century-old chapel falls into the hands of a malicious cult. Chapel of Horrors will feature select festival days that are less frightening to accommodate families and will also feature games and music for all to enjoy. General admission tickets start at $25.

Open select dates September 29 – October 31, 2023

Panic Point

For the past 13 Halloween seasons, Panic Point has been terrifying North Carolinians in the Triangle area. Tread lightly through the half-mile Haunted Forest trail and try your best not to get hunted down by one of the 30 creepy characters. Flirt with darkness on the Dark Trail Swamp as you stagger along with a rope to guide you through the grisly scenes. Go on a werewolf hunting excursion on the Howling Hayride Hunt or trek through Stalkers Farm, but be weary as the family does not take kindly to strangers. To really get your heart pumping, take a walk through the eerie cornfields with terrifying mythical characters abound in their Killers in the Corn attraction. Take time to regain your composure between attractions with concessions, carnival games, and bonfires. This haunt does not allow visitors under the age of eight and requires those between the ages of 9-12 to be accompanied by an adult. General admission tickets include access to all five attractions and start at $30 but vary depending on the date of your visit.

Open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Halloween September 16 – November 4, 2023

Walk along the cursed Coffin Creek brimming with ghosts and the undead or venture out to The Forbidden Acre along a twisted trail filled with demented souls committing unspeakable atrocities. If you have enough gumption left, tread lightly through the cornfield of Reaper’s Row, but be careful, as creatures often creep up from behind. The newly expanded Monster Midway offers food, beverages, casino-style games, and live music as you lick your figurative wounds and let your ego heal. There is no age restriction, however, the park is not recommended for visitors under the age of 12. All three attractions are included in the price of admission which starts at $25.

What makes a good haunted house? Haunted house pros weigh in on the fun of fear

Katia Riddle

A husband-and-wife team are the brains behind ScareGrounds, a series of haunted houses in the Portland area. They also do sets for horror movies and got married inside one of their own haunted houses.

JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:

Around Halloween, millions of people across the country pay for the chance to be terrified as they enter all things haunted - from houses to mazes to amusement parks. Katia Riddle went to the ScareGrounds scream park in Portland, Ore., and reports that for people who work in the industry, the trick is to scare people but not too much.

KATIA RIDDLE, BYLINE: It's a dark, wet, cold night. That hasn't stopped hundreds from flocking to this amusement park. They're touring three so-called haunts. This one has a twisted medical theme.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #1: Right this way. The doctors are ready for you. Question is, are you ready for them?

(CROSSTALK)

RIDDLE: There's just enough light inside this maze to make out the plastic body parts hanging from the ceiling. A woman in bloody rags jumps out.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON #2: I see you.

UNIDENTIFIED GROUP: (Screaming, inaudible).

RIDDLE: Tucker Morrison and her friend Brianna Hendrickson were some of the screamers in that crowd.

TUCKER MORRISON: I thought it was horrifying.

BRIANNA HENDRICKSON: Yeah. It was so scary.

RIDDLE: In a good way or a bad way?

HENDRICKSON: In a good way.

RIDDLE: Vincent Sherrill brought his date here tonight.

What is it about being scared that's fun?

VINCENT SHERRILL: I think it's mainly the adrenaline that comes with being scared, but also knowing you're safe.

RIDDLE: Adam Rominger manages the cast.

ADAM ROMINGER: We're not trying to traumatize people. That's not our goal.

RIDDLE: Rominger's also an actor. This year, he's playing Dr. Buttonhole - a cross between a clown and a deranged doctor. He describes his interactions with guests as a kind of dance.

ROMINGER: The people make eye contact, and you hold that eye contact, and then they turn their head. They've clearly been scared, and then you start following them.

RIDDLE: If people seem too agitated, he says, he backs off. A good haunt requires more than talented actors, though. There's a whole production company behind this - Vendetta Productions. Staff plan out the sets, characters and narrative. It's a year-round thing.

ROMINGER: Going into December, we'll already be talking about what haunts are we going to do next year.

RIDDLE: In July, they start auditioning actors. Estelle Fulmor is one of the lead producers of the company. She says they rehearse for weeks in advance.

ESTELLE FULMOR: Actors know who the protagonist is. They know if - are they the person who's hunting? Are they the person who's an accomplice? Are they a victim? So it all adds to a storyline.

RIDDLE: That storyline, she says, makes for a more structured and authentic experience. The team also has to understand their audience. They found younger generations especially hard to scare.

FULMOR: You can tell them that like, oh, I'm going to throw you into a woodchipper, and I'm going to kill you. And they're just like, oh, yeah - like, I've watched Chucky kill 50 people.

RIDDLE: They have discovered one useful tool. She says that people get more scared when you tap into something that's familiar from everyday life.

FULMOR: And we understand that millennials really are attached to their pets. Like, we have a generation where their pets are their babies.

RIDDLE: Often, actors will sneak up on visitors and whisper in their ear.

FULMOR: Just telling some people that you being here makes your pet sad, makes them go, oh, my goodness - like, it might.

RIDDLE: Fulmor fell in love with this industry 15 years ago.

FULMOR: You make people scream. You make people laugh. And you make all the friends. And you're just like, I got to keep doing this.

RIDDLE: She even met her husband working on a haunted set. They got married in a haunted house. Adam Rominger, the evil clown doctor, officiated. She loves the community she's made here, and she loves watching other people come here too.

FULMOR: Getting to actually experience a moment in life together with your friends.

RIDDLE: Even if that moment is running away from an evil clown doctor. For NPR News, I'm Katia Riddle in Portland, Ore.
