Spookley The Square Pumpkin is always a favorite Halloween read aloud. It’s a great book about being unique, tolerance and perseverance. After reading the book, we completed these Spookley The Square Pumpkin activities .

For all of our Spookley The Square Pumpkin lessons, we used our Read It Up! resource!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin
We start off our literacy activities by making predictions. Making predictions about a story excites the neurons for our readers so it engages them more in the story and helps them focus on the story. As we make predications based on the cover, we record them using our graphic organizer.

After reading the book we go back and re-visit our predictions and write what actually happened in the story.
Then we complete a story map to focus on the story elements.

As we completed our story map, we also identified a problem and solution from the story. Students then complete their own story map. After they finish their story map, they must retell the story using the illustrations they drew.

Spookley The Square Pumpkin Text Evidence
Spookley is a great story to introduce text evidence to students. We listed several characteristics of Spookley and the students have to identify evidence from the text to support those characteristics.

Then we used adjectives to describe Spookley!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin: Writing

Students used adjectives to write about Spookley. They had to use an adjective to describe Spookley and give a supporting reason. Finally, they illustrated their writing.
Spookley Graphing
Students use sticky notes to graph whether they’ve been to a pumpkin patch. After we complete our graph, we use our recording sheet to analyze the data.

Spookley Snack And Craft
Finally, students made their own version of Spookley The Square Pumpkin!

And of course, we make a Spookley snack using graham crackers, icing, Tootsie Rolls and candy eyes.

Spookley the square pumpkin comprehension questions and activities.
Spookley The Square Pumpkin is a great book for introducing young readers to important story elements. Here are some fun and educational reading comprehension and worksheet activities you can use with this book companion:
1. Spookley The Square Pumpkin Story Elements: At the beginning of the story, create a simple story map with your students. Discuss the characters, setting, problem, and solution as you read. This helps students understand the structure of a narrative.

2. Main Idea Activities: Discuss the main idea of the story with your first graders. Ask them to identify the key events that move the plot forward. This activity reinforces comprehension skills.
3. Character Traits of Spookley: Encourage your students to think about Spookley's character traits . Is he brave? Kind? Use sticky notes or write on an anchor chart to gather descriptive words that describe Spookley as a character.

4. Spookly the Square Pumpkin Comprehension Questions: Throughout the book, pause to ask comprehension questions about the story . For example, “Why do you think the other pumpkins tease Spookley?” or “What could Spookley have done differently in that situation?” Comprehension questions promote critical thinking and empathy.
5. Spookley Worksheet: Utilize a Spookley The Square Pumpkin worksheet like this one to review the story. This is an easy way to assess students' comprehension skills

Spookley The Square Pumpkin Writing Prompts
Spookley's journey in the pumpkin patch is a great inspiration for writing prompts that engage your students' creativity. Here are some ideas:
6. Writing Prompts: After reading the book, provide a writing prompt related to the story. For example, “If I were a square pumpkin, I would…” or “Write a letter to Spookley, giving him advice on how to handle bullies.” This encourages imaginative thinking. You can also have students practice procedural writing by retelling the story of Spookley The Square Pumpkin. This is a great way to have students practice using the temporal words first, next, then, and last to retell the story.

7. Spookley The Square Pumpkin Craft: Have your students create their own Spookley pumpkins using construction paper and this Spookley template. This combines fine motor skills with storytelling and is the perfect independent follow-up to their writing activity. Make the Spookly The Square Pumpkin craft even cuter and give it a 3D look by adding fun googly eyes.

8. Special Spookley Shape Book: Another great idea is to have kids practice procedural writing by making a Spookley shape book . Students can retell the story and add a cute Spookley cover. For your struggling writers, simply have them draw the story and label it.

9. Pumpkin Shape Writing: Use Spookley's story to introduce different shapes. Have your students cut out pumpkin shapes from construction paper and then write which shape pumpkin they would like to be. It's a fun way to combine art, geometry and writing.
10. Descriptive Words: Encourage your students to use descriptive words to write a paragraph or short story about Spookley. Ask them to describe his appearance, personality, and adventures in the pumpkin patch. This is a great way to teach students about adjectives that they can add to their other writing activities.
Spookley The Square Pumpkin Math Activities
Spookley's adventures can also be tied to math activities that make learning enjoyable for your kindergarten or first graders:
11. Graphing Activity: Bring in some different sizes and shapes and colors of real pumpkins. Ask students to count and graph pumpkins by size, color, or shape.
12. Pumpkin Measurement: Have students measure the circumference of some different-sized pumpkins. You can also use a simple game like this one to have students use non-standard units of measurement to measure differently shaped pumpkins. This would be a fun activity to do in small groups or at math centers during October.

13. Pumpkin Geometry: Have students do a pocket chart sorting activity like this one . Students can practice counting the sides on different shaped pumpkins and sort them into a pocket chart.

14. Math Facts: Incorporate math facts into the story by asking questions like, “If there are 5 round pumpkins and 3 square pumpkins, how many pumpkins are there in total?” This ties math into the storyline and helps students with addition and subtraction strategies.
Spookley The Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano is not only an excellent book but also a wonderful resource for first-grade teachers during the month of October. It provides a great opportunity to engage your students in reading comprehension activities, writing activities, and math activities that are both educational and fun.
Ready to make the most of this lovable character and enjoy a bit of pumpkin-themed fun with your class this fall? This resource includes easy no-prep reading, writing, and math worksheets and activities. Grab everything you need for a Spookley The Square Pumpkin book study here.

Meaningful Activities for Learning & Creating

3-D Spookley the Pumpkin Math Activity
Create your own model of a 3-D Spookley the Pumpkin using straws and pipe cleaners. This is a fun, hands-on math activity perfect for exploring geometry this Halloween!
Follow our Math for Kids Pinterest board!

*Meets Common Core Standards: K.G.A.1, K.G.A.2, K.G.A.3, K.G.B.4, K.G.B.5, K.G.B.6.

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin is a great book for the Halloween season. Not only does this fictional story help children learn to appreciate differences and focus on helping others, but it provides the perfect springboard for a geometry lesson!

In this activity, children will compare a square to a cube and use spatial awareness skills to build their own cubes. They’ll then turn their cubes into their very own Spookley the Pumpkin!

3-D Spookely the Pumpkin Math Activity
Materials for 3-d spookley the pumpkin.
- Orange straws
- Orange and green pipe cleaners
- Scotch tape
- Construction paper
Directions for 3-D Spookley the Pumpkin
* You’ll need 12 straws and 16 pipe cleaners per pumpkin. I cut my straws and pipe cleaners in half to make the pumpkins smaller and to make the materials stretch further.

1. Start by creating a square using your orange straws and pipe cleaners . (These orange straws and flexible, but if you cut them in half you can avoid the bendy half. You can even save the bendy pieces to use for building other shapes!) To build using straws and pipe cleaners: insert half of a pipe cleaner into one end of a straw, bend the pipe cleaner, and add another straw to the bent end.
2. Next, build up from your square to create a cube.

3. Now it’s time to turn your cube into Spookley. Cut out some leaf arms, eyes, and a mouth from your construction paper . Add some details to the paper using your markers .

4. Use a small piece of tape to secure the paper pieces to your cube.
5. Use half of a green pipe cleaner to make a stem for Spookley. Twist one end to attach it to the straw.

Display your Spookley the Pumpkin for Halloween!

– Let your children try to make a cube on their own. Show them how to use the pipe cleaners to connect the straws, and then let them give it a try.
– Build a square and a cube with your straws. Compare and contrast the two shapes.
– If young children are having trouble using small pieces of tape, they can attach the paper details using glue dots .
– Paper straws are a bit easier to work with than plastic since the plastic ones tend to slip more easily off the pipe cleaners.

Teachers who know Spookley the Square Pumpkin typically use his origin story, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin , in the fall to teach about embracing differences. But it turns out there are more Spookley books, lesson plans, music videos, and activity pages to entertain and educate your students. We took a look at all the Spookley resources and pulled together some other good times for incorporating Spookley.

As he goes through his day and discovers the wonder of learning new things, his worries disappear. Find out more at PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center , and don’t miss the educator toolkit . We love the discussion questions and the “acts of kindness trick-or-treat bag” activity.
Making the most of fall
Halloween is the perfect time to read the classic Spookley story , but we also love The Halloween Movie Book (Plus, if you have Netflix, you can stream the movie for your class). Print some coloring pages for your kids and put on some of the great videos from the official Spookley YouTube page . They can even DIY their own Spookley costume !
Honoring all types of families at Thanksgiving
Spookley the Square Pumpkin: A Family To Be Thankful For tells the story of a sad and lonely Spookley who eventually learns that no one family tree grows quite the same as another. Download the toolkit for fun drawing and writing activities, and don’t miss author Joe Troiano reading the story aloud.

STEAM is the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. STEAM activities help promote essential 21st-century skills, which is important in preparing our children for an unknown future. Each STEAM challenge is designed to challenge children’s thinking and problem-solving skills.
The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin is written by Joe Troiano and illustrated by Susan Banta. Spookley is an odd shaped pumpkin that saves the day and inspires us not to judge a pumpkin by its shape.
Use your knowledge of shapes to build your own Spookley inspired pumpkin patch.

Objective: Build a play dough pumpkin patch inspired by Spookely the Square Pumpkin.
Materials: Play Dough, Green Pipe Cleaners, Blocks (optional), Digital Camera (optional)
Read the story or watch the video, Spookley the Square Pumpkin.
Ask: How can we create a Spookley inspired pumpkin patch? What shapes would we see in a Spookley pumpkin patch?
Imagine: Give students time to experiment creating different shaped pumpkins using play dough.

Plan: Choose what colors and shapes you wish to include in your Spookley inspired pumpkin patch. Students may wish to draw their design.

Create: Build your pumpkin patch.

Experiment: Can you add any other shapes or colors to your pumpkin patch?

Improve: Discuss how you can improve your pumpkin patch. What else does a pumpkin patch need? Allow students time to add to their pumpkin patch.
Share: Draw a picture of your final pumpkin patch or take digital photographs to share with parents or other classmates.

STEAM Integration:
Science: What are the different parts of a pumpkin?
Technology: Take a digital picture of your pumpkin patch.
Engineering: Use blocks to build a display for your pumpkins.
Art: Can you mix colors together to create new pumpkin colors?
Math: How many different shaped pumpkins can you create for your pumpkin patch?

Spookley the Square Pumpkin
October 9, 2018
The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano is a great picture book choice for October! This fictional story of a square pumpkin provides the reader with a message of celebrating differences and helping others. I want to share a pumpkin craft booklet that you can use with your students when reading this story.

All About Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Spookley was different. He was odd, he was rare. Spookley the pumpkin wasn’t round – he was square!
What’s going on in the pumpkin patch? Well, a very unusual pumpkin has hatched. While all the others are round, Spookley is square. He’s not like his friends – they have curves, he has ends. And so everyone teases him, night and day.
But just before Halloween, the weather turns stormy. Winds toss the round pumpkins to and fro, and off they go, crashing and bashing and smashing – except Spookley. Can he, with his square little body, save the day?

Spookley the square pumpkin craft.
To put these pumpkin craft booklets together, you will need to print and cut out the templates.

Students will glue the stem, leaf, and eyes onto the cover to make a pumpkin face. They can even color in the eyes to add more detail.

After reading the story, you can choose which of the response pages to use. I have included templates for character traits, story elements, story retell, and a few writing options. Once students have completed their response pages, you can staple the pumpkin face on top and create a booklet. These can also be placed on a bulletin board!

I hope your students enjoy creating these craft response booklets for Spookley the Square Pumpkin! You might also enjoy these blog posts about activities for Substitute Creacher , I Need My Monster , and Creepy Carrots .

3 Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities That Are Simple and Adorable
If you aren’t reading Spookley the Square Pumpkin to your students in October, is it even Halloween?! For real, though: Spookley has quite a hold on my own preschooler all year (it’s one of her most-requested bedtime books). My first grade students also loved the tale of this square gourd who saves the day, so I’m super excited to share with you some ideas for Spookley the Square Pumpkin activities in your classroom.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities: The Craft Project
What you’ll need:
– Spookley the Square Pumpkin printable template (download it here)
– Orange, black, and green construction paper
– Scissors
– Glue stick
– Googly eyes (optional)
Instructions:
Print out the Spookley the Square Pumpkin template on white card stock. You will need one template for each student.
Next, have students trace Spookley onto orange construction paper and cut him out.
Now it’s time to add the details! Students can use black construction paper to create a mouth and green construction paper to make Spookley’s stem. Add googly eyes if you’d like.
Finally, glue Spookley onto a piece of black construction paper.
There you have it! Your very own Spookley the Square Pumpkin craft project. These make great Halloween decorations for your classroom or home. And they’re perfect for a Spookley the Square Pumpkin book activity, too!
Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities: The Bulletin Board Display
Okay, hear me out. What if we used your craft from above and turned it into a craftivity—pair it with a writing prompt and voila! You have an adorable, eye-catching set of Spookley the Square Pumpkins to make the cutest bulletin board in all the land.
Spookley writing prompts I love are :
1. Spookley is different. What makes you different?
2. Spookley is brave. What are some things that take bravery?
3. Spookley saves the day! Write about a time when you saved the day.
Your students’ responses will make for an adorable, unique, and inspiring display in your classroom or school!
You can download your own Spookley template, writing prompts, and printable paper here!
Spookley the Square Pumpkin Activities: The Game (Spookley Saves the Day)
Pressure is on at the pumpkin patch! This Spookley the Square Pumpkin game is a perfect way to work on those fine motor skills and sneak in some math practice, too!
– Spookley the Square Pumpkin printable (download it here)
– Dice (regular or mini foam ones)
Print and cut out the Spookley the Square Pumpkin printable. You will need one Spookley printable for each student or group of students.
Students take turns rolling the dice and coloring in that many pumpkins. The goal is to “save” and color in as many pumpkins as possible before time runs out (you can set a timer for one minute, two minutes, etc.).
The student with the most pumpkins colored in at the end of the game is the winner!
You can download your Spookley Saves the Day printable here.
These are just a few ideas for Spookley the Square Pumpkin activities that I hope you and your students enjoy! Be sure to tag me on Instagram (@erinwatersedu) when you use these in your own classroom!

THE LEGEND OF SPOOKLEY THE SQUARE PUMPKIN SUMMARY
Spookley the pumpkin is not like the other pumpkins in the patch. He is flat and square while they are round with curves. Spookley is not able to roll around with the other pumpkins and they tease him for being different.
It’s not until a storm makes its way to the patch that Spookley realizes it could be good to be square. The wind blows all the other pumpkins around the patch and some even fall into the bay! Spookley makes his way to the broken fence and wedges his body in so more pumpkins can’t fall into the water.
The next morning, the farmer discovers Spookley and realizes how he saved the day! The farmer decides to plant more seeds just like Spookley. The next year the patch is full of square, rectangular, triangular and round pumpkins of all different sizes and colors. People come from all over to take home a unique pumpkin.
Joe Troiano’s rhyming book Spookley the Square Pumpkin is a festive book that teaches the importance of individuality, acceptance, and bravery.
