Spookley The Square Pumpkin Activities

Spookley The Square Pumpkin is always a favorite Halloween read aloud. It’s a great book about being unique, tolerance and perseverance. After reading the book, we completed these Spookley The Square Pumpkin activities .

For all of our Spookley The Square Pumpkin lessons, we used our Read It Up! resource!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin
We start off our literacy activities by making predictions. Making predictions about a story excites the neurons for our readers so it engages them more in the story and helps them focus on the story. As we make predications based on the cover, we record them using our graphic organizer.

After reading the book we go back and re-visit our predictions and write what actually happened in the story.
Then we complete a story map to focus on the story elements.

As we completed our story map, we also identified a problem and solution from the story. Students then complete their own story map. After they finish their story map, they must retell the story using the illustrations they drew.

Spookley The Square Pumpkin Text Evidence
Spookley is a great story to introduce text evidence to students. We listed several characteristics of Spookley and the students have to identify evidence from the text to support those characteristics.

Then we used adjectives to describe Spookley!

Spookley The Square Pumpkin: Writing

Students used adjectives to write about Spookley. They had to use an adjective to describe Spookley and give a supporting reason. Finally, they illustrated their writing.
Spookley Graphing
Students use sticky notes to graph whether they’ve been to a pumpkin patch. After we complete our graph, we use our recording sheet to analyze the data.

Spookley Snack And Craft
Finally, students made their own version of Spookley The Square Pumpkin!

And of course, we make a Spookley snack using graham crackers, icing, Tootsie Rolls and candy eyes.

A musical with a big heart, Spookley The Square Pumpkin: The Musical is no tricks and nothing but a treat for all audiences!
Spookley The Square Pumpkin: The Musical tells the story of a square pumpkin living in a round pumpkin patch on Holiday Hill Farm. Shunned by the other pumpkins, Spookley is befriended by Edgar, Allan and Poe, three hilarious spiders, who convince him that, square or not, he has a right to be the Pick of the Patch. Encouraged by kindly Jack Scarecrow, Spookley tries his best, but he isn't sure he has what it takes until a mighty storm threatens Holiday Hill Farm. Spookley realizes it is up to him and his square shape to save the day. As a result, all the pumpkins in the patch learn that the things that make you different make you special.
The original production of Spookley The Square Pumpkin: The Musical , directed and conceived by Jeff Frank and First Stage, premiered in Milwaukee in 2015 to sold out performances. In 2016, a second production was mounted by Stages Theatre Company in Minneapolis and it broke all prior attendance records for the season.
"It has been an honor for me to work with so many talented people in bringing Spookley's story and these songs to life on the stage. And it has been a thrill to watch audiences of kids and parents respond so positively, especially knowing that many of the kids are experiencing musical theater for the first time," said Joe Troiano who also wrote the children's book The Legend of Spookley The Square Pumpkin as well as the animated special.
MTI's President and CEO, Drew Cohen stated, " Spookley , with its universal themes and delightful score is perfect for all audiences, year-round. Of course, with a main character who is a pumpkin, it is uniquely well-suited for the fall season and we are thrilled to make Spookley available in time for Halloween season this year. Spookley's track record of commercial success reflects how beloved this character-and indeed this musical-have become."

Easy Spookley The Square Pumpkin Craft For Kids [Free Template]

Chances are if you have toddlers or preschool-aged children, you’ve watched Spookley the Square Pumpkin.
We first saw it several years ago on Disney Jr. and my kids instantly loved it!
Now, it’s a part of our Halloween traditions to sit down as a family and watch this movie together.
Since we love it so much, we decided to share this easy Spookley the square pumpkin craft with you. It’s another one of our favorite pumpkin crafts for kids .
If you have kids who love Spookley, you have to check out this simple craft and start a new holiday tradition with your kids. Read or watch the video below to see how simple this craft is to make with your family.
Spookley The Square Pumpkin

If you haven’t yet watched the movie, we definitely recommend it for families with young children. Although the movie is a little cheesy for adults, it has songs, characters, and lessons parents will love!
The movie revolves around Spookley the square pumpkin, who despite his best efforts, just can’t seem to fit in with all the other pumpkins around him.
He tries desperately to fit in, but the round pumpkins just continue to tease him. Spookley finds friends in an unlikely group that includes spiders, bats, and a scarecrow.

Ultimately Spookley’s unique shape allows him to save all the other pumpkins and the farm when a terrible storm strikes! Kids learn that being different isn’t bad like it seems and that they shouldn’t judge others based on their appearances.
Spookley Craft
One of the best things about this pumpkin craft is how little supplies you need for it! There’s no rushing to the store to get all the things you need to make it.
In fact, we’re betting you have everything you need in your craft closet already!
- Colored card stock
- White card stock
- Googley eyes (optional)
- Spookley template (enter your email in the form at the end of this post to have the link sent to you)

Download the Spookley the square pumpkin template and print it out onto the corresponding colored card stock. Cut out the pieces and set them aside.

- Begin assembling Spookley by gluing his leaf arms, one on each side, to the middle of the pumpkin body.

Click here to see why I recommend these craft supplies
- Glue the stem to the top of the pumpkin.

Make Spookley’s eyes by either gluing the template eyes on or by using large googley eyes.

Can you believe that’s all there is to it to make this paper craft?! It’s such a simple and quick Halloween craft for kids that they’re going to love.
Halloween Fun
Want some more fun and educational Halloween printables for your kids? We’ve got you covered! Our Halloween printables bundle has a little bit of everything – from color by number pages to pattern block mats & more. Your kids will have a blast practicing their fine motor skills, counting, letter recognition, and more. It’s packed with 77 pages of fun so there’s lots of variety and learning potential. Your kids will never get bored!

Pumpkin Craft Notes
There are a few things to consider before making this craft.
First, you have two options for Spookley’s eyes. Included in the free printable template are eyes that are blue and oval, which resemble Spookley’s eyes more closely.
We think these eyes make the square pumpkin look most like Spookley, but you can also use googly eyes. The googly eyes give the craft a more 3D appearance, so that may be more engaging for the kids.

Another thing to think about is the dexterity of the children making this craft. If you want the kids to cut out the pieces all by themselves, we recommend making a more basic stem and perhaps skipping Spookley’s leaf arms altogether.
If the kids aren’t yet skilled enough to cut the pieces out themselves, just make sure you give enough time to cut out all the pieces ahead of time. It took us just about 2-3 minutes to cut out all the pieces to make one Spookley.
