Spooky Two Review
by Mike DeGagne
Spooky Two is this British blues-rock band's pièce de résistance. All eight of the tracks compound free-styled rock and loose-fitting guitar playing, resulting in some fantastic raw music. With Gary Wright on keyboards and vocals and lead singer Mike Harrison behind the microphone, their smooth, relaxed tempos and riffs mirrored bands like Savoy Brown and, at times, even the Yardbirds . With some emphasis on keyboards, songs like "Lost in My Dream" and the nine-minute masterpiece "Evil Woman" present a cool, nonchalant air that grooves and slides along perfectly. "I've Got Enough Heartache" whines and grieves with some sharp bass playing from Greg Ridley , while "Better by You, Better Than Me" is the catchiest of the songs, with its clinging hooks and desperate-sounding chorus. The last song, "Hangman Hang My Shell on a Tree," is a splendid example of the bandmembers' ability to play off of one another, mixing soulful lyrics with downtrodden instrumentation to conjure up the perfect melancholia. Although Spooky Tooth lasted about seven years, their other albums never really contained the same passion or talented collaborating by each individual musician as Spooky Two.

Spooky Tooth Spooky Two: Best version?

Has anyone compared the remastered Spooky Two with bonus tracks to the A&M CD or US LP? How does the new one sound? I'm not really pleased with the sound of the old CD or US LP for that matter. Thanks

I have it and think it sounds fine.

The Repertoire remaster sounds a tad loud and bright to my ears. But I've only listened to it once, I'll have to play it again tonight. I've never heard the A&M Spooky Two CD, but "That Was Only Yesterday: The Best of Spooky Tooth" includes all but one track from Spooky Two. Haven't listened that one in quite awhile, either...but IIRC it didn't sound bad.

Hi, I only have the old 1990 spooky two cd, and i wonder if the remaster is worth buying (sonic improvement, bonus tracks,...). Does anyone has some new advice (since the last post) about it? And about "it's all about" (first album), which version is the best ? thanks. (sorry for possible mistakes - english is not my native tongue and it's the first time i'm posting here, so i'm a bit nervous )

What remaster are you speaking about?
I think the Repertoire remastering on all the ST CDs is fine.
(to rck60s, i'm talking about the repertoire cds) thanks Dennis. I also have the "last puff" album (edsel), which is good. If you know both versions, would you say that the repertoire cd is better than the edsel ?

I love this album! I only have the original olive-colored A&M vinyl, though, and it sounds fine to me. "Better By You, Better Than Me" RAWKS. Evan

I had this album originally as an 8-track tape, then the LP, then a dbx-cassette, then the cd which I thought would never be released. I hoped this would have been issued on sacd but "nooooo!" So should I look into this remastered version or is there a Deluxe Edition in the works? I'm listening to it now via iTunes....even sounds good though my tiny computer speakers.

thanks, i'll check those repertoire cds.
I'm sure Eroc did these...BTW where is Eroc these days?
I read on this forum that Eroc uses to denoise and maximize the CD he remasters. if it's the case here, i hope he was light handed...

I got most nearly all of Spooky Two by acquiring the compilation That Was Only Yesterday on Island/Universal, compilation produced by Bill Levenson, mastered by Dan Kincaid at Master Cutting Room, New York and Suha Gur at Universal Music Group Studios, New Jersey. It sounds great, but the usual problem with buying a compilation is that I can't really justify buying the CD just to get one track, "I've Got Enough Heartaches", which isn't on it, and the bonus tracks. The compilation has the tracks in the right album order, as well.

nice reply thanks. (i realize that my former post may have seemed a little harsh, sorry for that)
That's okay... I was long enough on the road to get used to these things. And I myself can be very harsh, too, when it comes up to crap concerning music and sound. - Eroc

Formed in 1967, Spooky Tooth quickly moved into progressive rock during the heady days of the late 60s. The original band comprised Gary Wright (b. 26 April 1945, Englewood, New Jersey, USA; keyboards, vocals) plus a band named Art (see "Art (2)") that featured Mike Kellie (b. 24 March 1947, Birmingham, England; drums), Luther Grosvenor (b. 23 December 1946, Evesham, Worcestershire, England ...

With not much to do these days I have been going through my album collection, one that dates back some 55 years. I happened across Spooky Tooth's 2nd album, "Spooky Two," which was known, in that era, by 60s rock fans as quintessential drug music (all who have dropped acid and listened to "Lost in my dream" can attest to that statement; NOT suggesting that anyone try this now).

Standing as the band's formal American debut, 1969's "Spooky Tooth Two" reinforced their reputation as a happening underground FM act. Refining their molten-metal attack, the collection benefited from strong original material, coupled with growing studio confidence and improved production values (the latter courtesy of Jimmy Miller).
Spooky Tooth was an English band in the 60's and 70's. YouTube a few of their songs like, That was only yesterday, Tobacco Road, Evil woman and I am the Walrus, and you may find you really like them. Spooky Two is awesome, but doesn't have some of their better known stuff.

A very intense song. The next songs were originally on the Side Two of the L.P. and all were composed by Wright alone: "Lost in my Dream": wiith also some psychedelic influences and strange lyrics which seem to narrate a nightmare instead of a peaceful dream. It has very good drums and dramatic vocals, and also very good backing vocals.
