AMC’s Shudder: Is This Spooky Streaming Service Worth It?

Are you a fright-fest fanatic in the mood for haunting tales and scary flicks? With Halloween on the horizon, there’s no better time of year to amp up the terror by indulging in some spooktacular programming. Whether you’re a fan of pure horror, slasher films, psychological thrillers, monster movies, or cult classics that are as nostalgic as they are nauseating, plenty of streaming services offer Halloween-themed marathons to satisfy your needs.
But what’s a true horror fan to do when all the ghoulish gross-outs are spread out across multiple platforms? Put down the hockey mask and machete — AMC’s Shudder is here to administer your necessary dose of screams. With hundreds of films and TV show episodes on its roster, this horror-only streaming service might be just what you need to quench your thirst for terror. Ready to conjure up Candyman or mingle with Michael Myers? Find out what Shudder offers and whether it’s worth the subscription price.
Shudder: A Platform for Horror Fanatics, by Horror Fanatics

Shudder is a streaming platform designed to meet the niche needs of a key group of film buffs: horror fans. By all accounts, the streaming service has successfully pulled off this mission. Shudder is a premiere service that offers scary programming — and only scary programming — in the form of old and new films, television shows, and documentaries that fall into the genres of horror, supernatural, and thriller themes. It caters to movies and episodic horror fans and provides an impressive library of options to explore.
What makes Shudder such a fantastic platform is its variety. Shudder’s collection of films and shows spans hundreds of movies, dozens of TV shows, and even a handful of horror-themed podcasts. The platform features a large number of classics that have defined the horror genre — think iconic flicks like John Carpenter’s Halloween , George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead , The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Train to Busan . But it also offers up plenty of indie films, comedies, and old-school titles that paved the way for today’s horror. Ever watched Chopping Mall , Hell Night, or Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker ? With Shudder, you can dive into films that might not have crossed your radar before.
Shudder also organizes content by collections so you can spend less time reading endless summaries to hunt down the films or series that fit your taste. Curated collections like “Love Sick,” “Horror Noire,” “Anthologies” and “Queer Horror” make it easier to tap into the topics you’re dying to watch. And, what’s even better is that these super-specific lists aren’t left to the whims of AI software; instead, actual people — vetted horror fans — create the lineups, so you know they’re good. With over a million users subscribed to the streaming service, Shudder may have cracked the code for successfully spooky programming.
Shudder’s Perks Include Original Flicks and Spooky Shows

While Shudder features many classic horror flicks and shows, these aren’t the platform’s only claim to fame. It also provides exclusive and original content designed to appeal to Shudder subscribers One of the most popular original series available is Creepshow , which is inspired by the 1982 film of the same name (directed by George Romero and written by Stephen King) and the E.C. horror comic books of the 1950s. Creepshow is structured like an anthology, bringing horrifying comic panels to life and exploring everything from the supernatural to the super-strange. The platform is also releasing new episodes of the original series Slasher , which features a storyline about a family on a secluded island who’s forced to fight against one another for survival.
Shudder’s original films are also some of its highlights. The movie Host was one of the top films of 2020 on Shudder’s platform. Recorded utilizing Zoom only (giving it that pandemic-anxiety vibe), the movie features a group of friends gathering online for a socially distant hangout…and succumbing to dark forces on each end of the camera. Another Shudder original is 2021’s Prisoners of the Ghostland which stars Nicolas Cage as a bank robber who has five days to find a wealthy man’s daughter otherwise, the bomb collar secured around his neck will detonate. These titles represent only a handful of the unsettling nailbiters within Shudder’s library. But what’s the verdict?
Is the Subscription Worth the Horrific Hype?

If you love all terror all the time, Shudder is the perfect platform for you. Even if you subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, or another popular streaming platform , Shudder has the widest variety of curated horror on the streaming market centralized in one place. With over 400 movies and hundreds of television episodes already on its docket, this collective of frightening tales is slated to only grow in size, with new films and episodes appearing weekly. Like most streaming platforms, you may not love all the content that you view on Shudder — but there’s a handy rating system (with skulls instead of stars!) so you know what fellow horror fans think.
The platform is easy to access through most devices and browsers, so you can queue things up on your Roku or fireTV device or take the streaming service with you on your laptop or phone. A standalone Shudder app is available via Google Play, Apple’s App Store, and Xbox One, and it works similarly to other streaming apps.
If you’re not sure you want to make the subscription leap, Shudder has you covered. It offers a seven-day, no-strings free trial so you can take your time browsing titles and collections to see if the variety is enough to capture your interest. Just keep in mind that you’d be hard-pressed to engage with all that Shudder has to offer within a week. As an added bonus, the platform is entirely ad-free.
Membership plans start at only $5.99 a month, making this an affordable option. To save a bit on this month-to-month price, you can opt to purchase a yearlong subscription for $56.99 — which comes out to $4.75 per month . If you’re more interested in getting your scare on for the Halloween season without committing to the entire year, subscribing to Shudder at least through October can help you scratch the itch.
Ultimately, if horror is your top streaming genre, signing up for Shudder is a no-brainer (sorry, zombies). With an influx of new flicks and shows frequently hitting its library and an affordable monthly fee, you won’t run out of terrifying titles anytime soon.

10 Spooky Yu-Gi-Oh! Decks For A Halloween Game Night
When battling it out at Halloween game night, several Yu-Gi-Oh! decks perfectly set the tone for a night of fun and frights.
Yu-Gi-Oh! often pulls inspiration from the cultural zeitgeist for its various cards, and Halloween is no different. While few archetypes encapsulate the holiday as a whole, plenty offer a delectable taste of its elements, be it candy, scares, or good old-fashioned B movie cheese with a side of spooky stories by flickering firelight.
RELATED: The 10 Spookiest Cards For A Halloween-Themed Magic: The Gathering Deck
Among the different ways to celebrate Halloween, there's a phenomenal feeling that comes from a game night centered on pitting one festive deck against another. Not every Halloween deck is competitive, but all have some fun quirks going for them beyond mere aesthetics. Many have even served as an unexpected rogue deck for players who want something different.
10 Exosisters Are Powerful Ghostbusters
The Exosisters are a group of skilled exorcists intent on stopping all restless spirits that might plague the land. These ghostbusters may not have proton packs, but they can stop a graveyard focused deck dead in its tracks with its arsenal of tricks.
All Exosister monsters have some effect that triggers when an opponent interacts with a graveyard, ranging from extra summons to powerful negates. Their ability to bring out Xyz monsters at a rapid pace is almost unparalleled, as a single monster on the field can turn into a pair of Xyz boss monsters in an instant.
9 Kaiju Live Up To Their Monster Movie Heritage
While kaiju movies like Godzilla and King Kong are more famous for their cheesy antics than their scares nowadays, there's no doubt that they can fit right into a marathon of classic B movies on Halloween night. Despite their differences, the kaiju cards all have one ability in common.
RELATED: 10 Best Monster Movies That Aren't American Or Japanese
The kaiju cards can tribute an opponent's monsters in order to summon one to their side of the field. It wouldn't be a proper monster movie if they didn't fight something, so every kaiju summoned allows another to leap out of the deck to confront it in an epic brawl.
8 Skull Servants Have Strength In Numbers
The Skull Servant archetype revolves around the titular "Skull Servant," a level one normal monster with virtually no stats to speak of. However, when they work together, they're a force to be reckoned with. Known simply as "Wights" in the OCG, the overall naming scheme for the archetype makes much more sense.
The real key to the archetype is King Of Skull Servants, who can easily reach 8,000 or more attack. Cards such as Wightbaking or Wightprince can easily get Servants into the graveyard to fuel plays with the King. Both count as a Servant themselves while in the graveyard.
7 Madolche Are Sweet In Every Way
Halloween is a season of desserts for many, and while Madolche are hardly frightening, they perfectly fit into the sugary sweet side of the holiday. The deck features nobility, knights, and more, all heavily themed around a wide variety of desserts, from chocolate to marmalade.
The Madolche's strength is their ability to recycle cards, making it very hard to run them out of resources as they build up to powerful boss monsters like Madolche Queen Tiaramisu, who can clear an opponent's board with non-targeting non-destruction removal. When combined with Madolche Chateau, Tiramisu's effect will even return its materials after use.
6 Danger! Decks Send Players On A Hunt For Cryptids
Starring monsters like Mothman or chupacabras, a Danger deck fits perfectly with eerie tales told around a campfire in the dead of night. Similarly, something lurking in a lake or running about the woods with only its footprints to hint at its passing provides a creepy feeling.
RELATED: 10 Most Annoying Deck Builds To Face In Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel
The Danger archetype shares the ability to discard cards and gain various effects should they be hit, special summoning themselves if they dodge the effect, and drawing a card in the process to boot. They combine especially well with any graveyard-focused archetype, with Tearlaments being especially potent when combined with "Danger! Nessie!"
5 Frightfurs Are Terrifying Warped Toys
From Chucky to Freddy Fazbear, toys and terror are a favorite combination for many, and the Frightfurs are Yu-Gi-Oh!'s most successful attempt at it so far. Starting life as the adorable and innocent Fluffal cards, it's only when combined with the devious Edge Imps that they show their true colors.
The deck relies heavily on Fusion summoning and is prone to a consistency hit if too many out-of-archetype cards are added to it. Likewise, room in the extra deck will be important, as they use it as a toolbox of Frightfur Fusions that run a wide gambit of potent effects.
4 Mayakashi Can Grow Out Of Control
Yokai are a staple of Japanese horror , so it's only natural that they'd receive a suitably spooky archetype in Yu-Gi-Oh! . Likewise, their sister and sometimes rival archetype the Shiranui are based on another facet of Japanese culture, drawing upon Shinto shrines and samurai for their Aesthetics.
The deck focuses heavily on climbing up Levels or Ranks with their extra deck monsters, using cards like Dakki, The Graceful Mayakashi that allow them to chain together Synchro or Link summons back to back. Mayakashi can be played on their own, but they also work great when mixed with Shiranui, and some support cards even name both decks.
3 Vendread Use The Graveyard Like Few Others Can
The Vendread feature a mix of zombies and superheroes, the former often compared to Resident Evil's infected. The deck relies on a mix of Ritual summoning and filling their graveyard, with their monsters boosting anything Ritual summoned using them as material.
For many decks, a focus on Ritual summoning has been their downfall, but the Vendread make up for the summoning method's normal weaknesses with powerful cards like Revendread Origin. Origin allows the archetype to summon using monsters in the graveyard and can be banished after use to protect a boss monster.

2 Vampires Have No Shortage Of Minions
Castlevania is one of Konami's longest running franchises, and Yu-Gi-Oh! has made great use of that. Many vampire cards reference the series. Most notably, Vampire Hunter and Vampire Scarlet Scourge draw inspiration from the whip-wielding Belmont clan and the dhampir Alucard, respectively.
RELATED: 10 Scariest Video Game Vampires, Ranked
Vampires excel at Tribute summoning, using either special-summoned minions or an opponent's own monsters as fodder. They also possess several useful Xyz and Link monsters, which excel at reanimating other cards, and often combo well with Zombie World or similar effects that turn anything that touches the board into a zombie-type monster.
1 Ghostricks Are Always Ready For Halloween
With tricks and treats to spare, Ghostricks are undoubtedly the most fitting deck for Halloween. Themed around a festive haunted house and the holiday itself, each monster is a cute adaption of some famous ghost or ghoul, from Frankenstein's Monster to hopping vampires, and everything in-between.
While the exact goal varies deck by deck, all versions of Ghostricks end up leaning toward control, making use of a variety of reusable flip effects to win. For a long time, they were limited by a reliance on field spells. However, their options were expanded by the Battle of Chaos set's release, adding the archetype's first Link monster, among other boons.

3 Spooky Decks For Your Yu-Gi-Oh Halloween
Wanna run something seasonal? Check out new builds for Skull Servants, Zombies, and Ghostricks!
By Loukas Peterson | @kangarookas | Published 2/7/2023 | 7 min read
Time to get spooky!
I had this grand idea of making a pumpkin themed deck for this? But it turns out there are only four Pumpkin cards in the entire game. Bad news: Pumpking the King of Ghosts , Pumprincess the Princess of Ghosts , Naturia Pumpkin , and Pumpkin Carriage don't even work together. Adding Hallohallo doesn't help either.
I guess you could say my dreams of a pumpkin deck were squashed .
I also considered making a Ghost Girl deck revolving around all the Tuner monsters with in-hand effects - Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit and the rest. But it turns out a deck made completely of hand traps wasn't helping anyone, so that got scrapped too.
How about we look at some seasonal decks that people will care about, and can actually net some victories?
Spooky Scary Skull Servants
There are plenty of decks that require you to send cards to the graveyard to function, but Skull Servants take the undead cake. The deck's ultimate goal is to summon King of the Skull Servants , and it's remarkably easy once you start exploring all the Wight cards that support the theme.
All the Skull Servant cards are actually worth playing, but you need to max out on them for the deck to be at its best. Wightprincess is the only one I wouldn't recommend playing three copies of. If there weren't other Normal Summons that are more important, I'd suggest playing more, but it's really hard to compete with cards like Uni-Zombie and Gozuki in this strategy.

How to play the deck, you ask? It's simple - throw all your cards in the graveyard and try to OTK. Without Union Carrier , maximizing the ATK of King of the Skull Servants by equipping and destroying Doomsday Horror isn't an option. I had to improvise a bit to make OTKs more easily.
At one point, that involved waking up in the middle of night, considering Double Attack in an exhausted fugue state, realizing that was stupid and then going back to sleep.
Apparently Spooktober's getting to me already.

You can only use this effect of "Danger! Nessie!" once per turn.
1 Level 1 monster, except a Token You can target 1 face-up monster this card points to; equip that face-up monster to this card (max. 1). You can only use this effect of "Relinquished Anima" once per turn. This card gains ATK equal to that equipped monster's.
You can target 1 face-up monster on the field; discard 1 card, and if you do, increase that target's Level by 1. You can target 1 face-up monster on the field; monsters you control cannot attack for the rest of this turn, except Zombie-Type monsters, also send 1 Zombie-Type monster from your Deck to the Graveyard, and if you do, increase that target's Level by 1. You can only use each effect of "Uni-Zombie" once per turn.
You can reveal this card in your hand; your opponent randomly chooses 1 card from your entire hand, then you discard the chosen card. Then, if the discarded card was not "Danger! Dogman!", Special Summon 1 "Danger! Dogman!" from your hand, and if you do, draw 1 card. If this card is discarded: You can have all face-up monsters your opponent currently controls lose 1000 ATK until the end of this turn. You can only use this effect of "Danger! Dogman!" once per turn.
Send up to 3 cards from your hand to the GY; draw that many cards, then you can Special Summon up to that many monsters from your hand, with different names, that are "Performapal" monsters, "Magician" Pendulum Monsters, and/or "Odd-Eyes" monsters, each with a Level between the Pendulum Scales of the 2 cards in your Pendulum Zones. If you did not Special Summon by this effect, you lose 1000 LP for each card in your hand. You can only activate 1 "Performapal Popperup" per turn.
Face-up Level 3 or lower Zombie-Type monsters on the field, except "The Lady in Wight", cannot be destroyed by battle and are unaffected by Spell/Trap effects. This card's name becomes "Skull Servant" while it is in the Graveyard.
One of the biggest challenges to the Skull Servant strategy is built into the deck: you win games off King of the Skull Servants giant ATK, but many of the Wight cards banish Skull Servants from the graveyard, effectively de-powering the King. It doesn't help that other Zombies like Gozuki may banish Skull Servants, too.
To mitigate that a bit, there's a Rank 7 monster from Dawn of Majesty that gives the King of the Skull Servants an extra boost: Voloferniges, the Darkest Dragon Doomrider . If you use its effect to blow itself up, it effectively replaces the ATK of two Skull Servants.

Secondly, Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack is a sneaky way to give your opponent a weak monster with Geonator Transverser ; one that doesn't involve keeping a Wight on the field. Keep in mind, if you can just win by attacking with a 12,000 ATK King of the Skull Servants , that's better. But sometimes when you're dumping your deck into the graveyard, your best path to victory takes an unconventional turn.
Rank 7s aren't easy to come by in this deck, but with the Danger! monsters you can get to at least one Level 7 monster pretty readily. While Level 8 Synchros are normally the go-to for Uni-Zombie plays, it's perfectly viable to go for Level 7 Synchros, make Rampaging Smashtank Rhynosaber , discard extra Wights, then summon Voloferniges, the Darkest Dragon Doomrider to boost your King.
The hoops you have to jump through to put a big King of the Skull Servants on board can look pretty weird, but the deck's surprisingly effective. The winding path that takes you there may confuse your opponent, but a win is a win!
It's Zombie Time!
It's unfaithful to call Zombies a theme without recognizing that they mirror Warrior Toolbox better than traditional themes. After all, it's a whole monster type that plays off the trick of reviving from the graveyard… as Zombies do.
Zombie's the most on-the-nose monster type in Yu-Gi-Oh history; the mechanics are baked in, and they're exactly what you'd expect. After all, it's a whole type that plays off the trick of reviving from the graveyard… as Zombies do. If you tell someone you're playing a Zombie deck, they'll probably know what it's going to be. No other monster type bears that much weight.

The strategy for Zombies has evolved in line with the monsters that have been printed over the years. Most Zombie monsters have some type of Zombie-flavored mechanic, so they tend to work together really well. That means as better Zombie cards are printed, "Zombies" as a whole get better. Fewer Zombie Masters, more Gozuki , if you catch my drift.
While Shiranui, Vampire, the Skull Servants, Mayakashi, and Vendread all have merit, what I created for Spooktober is just… Zombies. Just plain Zombies. Good ol' Mezuki and friends, featuring Zombie World . Zombies on zombies on zombies.
Oh, and Doomking Balerdroch is there to haunt your opponent turn after turn.

You can only use this effect of "Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion" once per turn.
2 Zombie monsters If you would Tribute a monster(s) for a Tribute Summon, you can Tribute a Zombie monster(s) your opponent controls, even though you do not control them. You can only use each of the following effects of "Vampire Sucker" once per turn. • You can target 1 monster in your opponent's GY; Special Summon it to your opponent's field in Defense Position, but it becomes a Zombie monster. • If a Zombie monster(s) is Special Summoned from either GY: Draw 1 card.
2 Zombie monsters Must first be Fusion Summoned. Monsters cannot be destroyed by battle with this card. At the end of the Damage Step, if this card battled a monster that has an original Level: That monster's ATK becomes 0, also, if that monster is still face-up on the field, Special Summon 1 "Dark Soul Token" (Zombie/DARK/Level ?/ATK ?/DEF 0). (When Summoned, its Level and ATK become equal to the original Level and ATK of that monster.) You can only control 1 "Dragonecro Nethersoul Dragon".
1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters Once per turn, during the Main Phase (Quick Effect): You can banish both this face-up card from the field and 1 random card from your opponent's hand, face-up, until your next Standby Phase. Once per turn, during your opponent's Standby Phase: You can target 1 banished card; return it to the GY. If this card is in your GY: You can target 1 other card in the GY; shuffle both that card and this card from the GY into the Deck.

Add 1 Field Spell from your Deck to your hand.
1 Tuner + 1+ non-Tuner monsters If this card is Synchro Summoned: You can equip 1 Link Monster from your GY to this card, and if you do, place Borrel Counters on this card equal to that Link Monster's Link Rating. This card gains ATK equal to half the ATK of the monster equipped to it by its effect. When your opponent activates a card or effect (Quick Effect): You can remove 1 Borrel Counter from this card; negate the activation. You can only use this effect of "Borreload Savage Dragon" once per turn.
2 Zombie monsters This card's name becomes "Revendread Slayer" while on the field. You can only use each of the following effects of "Avendread Savior" once per turn. • You can target 1 "Vendread" card in your GY; add it to your hand. br>• During damage calculation, if this card battles an opponent's monster (Quick Effect): You can send 1 Zombie monster from your Deck to the GY; that opponent's monster loses ATK equal to the Level of the monster sent to the GY x200, until the end of this turn.
During the Standby Phase, if a face-up card is in a Field Zone and this card is in your GY: You can Special Summon this card in Defense Position. You can only use this effect of "Doomking Balerdroch" once per turn. Once per Chain, when a Zombie monster, except "Doomking Balerdroch", activates its effect (except during the Damage Step) (Quick Effect): You can apply 1 of these effects (but you cannot apply that same effect of "Doomking Balerdroch" again this turn). • Negate that effect. • Banish 1 monster from the field or GY.
Because the Zombie package is so small, you have the luxury of playing extra hand traps as well as actual backrow traps. Shiranui Style Swallow's Slash is your go-to because you always have an extra Zombie on hand. Beyond Doomking Balerdroch revival effect, it's the norm to have an abundance of Zombies lying around.
I hadn't considered many non-Zombie combos until Baronne de Fleur came out, but it's a great card to play here, to completely wipe out all hope your opponent has for a turn. It's remarkably easy to summon as long as you have access to a Tuner: the play sequence is really quite short.
- Start by making Crystron Halqifibrax to field any other monster. Use the monster summoned with Crystron Halqifibrax and your spare monster to make Artifact Dagda , so you have have two Links on board
- On your opponent's turn, tribute Crystron Halqifibrax , triggering Artifact Dagda effect to set Artifact Scythe and summon T.G. Wonder Magician
- The chain resolves backwards, so T.G. Wonder Magician will destroy and summon Artifact Scythe
- Use the Quick Effect of T.G. Wonder Magician to Synchro Summon, and bam, Baronnne de Fleur. Your opponent can't use their Extra Deck, and you can stop virtually anything with Baronnne de Fleur
I considered playing a pure Shiranui deck, but those cards are foreign to many people. I think we can all get behind some Zombie craziness fueled by Zombie World , right? Plus there's still a nod to Shiranui with the added Shiranui Spiritmaster .
Trick Or More Trick
Ah, yes, a deck where Normal Summons just don't exist. Ghostrick monsters can't be Normal Summoned unless you control a Ghostrick already… at least until Ghostrick Festival comes to the TCG in Battle of Chaos in 2022… so it's a deck that does a lot of waiting around.
All three times I Top 8'd Regionals playing Ghostricks, I had something else smashed into the deck because waiting around forever is lame, and more importantly, wildly ineffective when you're trying to win games.

Ghostrick cards are neat, but if the entirety of your strategy is "wait until your opponent attacks," then you're in for some trouble. Ironically, once your opponent does start attacking you can really screw up their strategy. But Ghostricks don't have any real counters before the Battle Phase.
While you don't need to totally shut your opponent down before the opponent's turn starts, a proactive strategy is better than twiddling your thumbs. There are plenty of paths you can venture down, but I've found making Ghostrick Angel of Mischief as soon as possible to be one of the better options.

You can only use this effect of "Knightmare Cerberus" once per turn. Co-linked monsters you control cannot be destroyed by card effects.
When this card resolves, all monsters your opponent controlled when this card was activated are changed to face-down Defense Position. Monsters your opponent controls cannot change their battle positions. Destroy this card during your 2nd Standby Phase after activation.
Ghostricks are all about messing with your opponent… not necessarily winning quickly. Many Ghostrick cards didn't make the cut for this build, or I pared their ratios down because they only pester your opponent. But that said, what would you expect from cute versions of poltergeists and spooky folklore cards? All I'm saying is that I've made people at locals forfeit.
Am I sorry? Absolutely not.
Vampires are also getting new support in Battle of Chaos, but we'll revisit that theme once we get closer to the release. For now, there are enough spooky decks you can build right now. Unless you're one of the diehard Vampire fans out there. In that case, it sucks to be you.
If you want to complain about the lack of vampires, or just about that pun, sorry - feel free to tweet me. It's not like I can go back and add a Vampire deck post publishing, but I'll read your replies if that's any consolation!
Just remember: beat your opponents before they beat you.
