RELEASE DATE Announced for Disney’s NEW Haunted Mansion Movie
By Madison Owens Leave a Comment
Disney has been making a lot of live-action adaptations throughout the recent years, and they’re not slowing down any time soon!

Lion King Photo Op
We’ve seen The Lion King , Mulan , The Jungle Book , and more get live-action remakes, and there are a lot more in the works right now . There are also live-action films adapted from Disney rides, like the incredibly successful Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise and the more recent Jungle Cruise movie (which is getting a sequel , BTW!). One movie coming up has the unique distinction of being adapted from a ride AND being a remake — do you know what it is??
It’s The Haunted Mansion ! Disney made a live-action movie from the ride back in 2003 starring Eddie Murphy, and it didn’t do too great a the box office (although, it does have some fun moments!). So, they’re trying their hand at it again and making another movie about the ride , and it JUST got a release date !

Haunted Mansion is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 10th, 2023 , according to Deadline . They say that Disney already had the date on hold for an untitled event movie. And, no other major studio releases are dated for that weekend right now, so maybe the film will do better at the box office this time. UPDATE: The film has been delayed and will now release on August 11, 2023.

Haunted Mansion in Disney World
The screenplay was written by Katie Dippold and the film will be directed by Justin Simien. It will star Tiffany Haddish , Owen Wilson , Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, and LaKeith Stanfield . So, yeah — the cast is pretty stacked with talent (and actors who are no stranger to Disney projects !). We can’t wait to see what it’s like!

Haunted Mansion 2023's Expected Disney+ Release Window Revealed (Report)

The Disney+ release timing for Disney's latest Haunted Mansion film has seemingly been revealed.
Justin Simien's star-studded live-action take on the beloved Haunted Mansion Disney Parks ride is playing in theaters now, earning lukewarm reviews and a somewhat middling box office haul thus far.
Haunted Mansion comes in a string of financial missteps for Disney this summer with movies like The Little Mermaid and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny not living up to their earning potential for the studio.
This lack of box office interest ( aside from a few major exceptions ) has been attributed by some to the general audience's growing propensity to wait for streaming instead of heading to the theater. This is also something that the studios have tried to curb by pushing streamer release dates further out.
First Details on Haunted Mansion's Disney+ Release

According to a new report, Disney's Haunted Mansion could hit Disney+ just in time for Halloween.
In writing about the film's box office woes (earning a meager $24 million domestically in its opening weekend), Variety reported that the Justin Simien-directed blockbuster could be headed to Disney+ sooner rather than later.
The outlet wrote that while a digital release plan for Haunted Mansion is yet to be revealed, Disney has recently released its films on VOD storefronts and Disney+ somewhere between 45 and 90 days after its theatrical debut.
This would mean Haunted Mansion could come to Disney+ sometime in late September or early October.
Seeing as the film opened on Friday, July 28, that 45-90 day window would put the film's streaming release sometime between September 11 and October 26.
When Will Haunted Mansion Start Streaming on Disney+?
This report from Variety will almost surely have fans hankering to know exactly when Haunted Mansion will come to Disney+ exactly.
The movie has obviously not lit the world on fire at the ticket window, so Disney's streaming timeline for the film will likely be moved up from what the studio had initially planned.
As an example, the recently released Little Mermaid film came to VOD services a mere 60 days after its theatrical debut with no Disney+ release date having been announced as of yet.
While The Little Mermaid did a little better at the box office than Haunted Mansion almost surely will (barring some miraculous turn of events), audiences should expect the spook-filled blockbuster to be available for purchase at home a little bit sooner.
What will likely happen is around that 45 day-mark (September 11) , Haunted Mansion should hit those same VOD storefronts. Then, a little bit later, say sometime in mid-October, the film will come to Disney+.
Seeing as Disney commonly releases Disney+ content on Wednesdays, either October 12 or 19 feels like a natural fit for Haunted Mansion to debut on the service.
Either of these dates could provide some great Halloween-themed synergy for Disney and the film, as audiences get into the spooky season they may be a little more willing to give Haunted Mansion a chance.

When will Haunted Mansion be on Disney+?

When will Haunted Mansion be on Disney+? We speculate when the Disney film will be released on their streaming service.
Haunted Mansion is the 2023 film from Disney that tempted box office fate by releasing one week after the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon in the USA. The film swapped release dates with The Marvels , as it was originally scheduled in the November 10 slot, but Disney pulled Haunted Mansion forward to accommodate the Marvel film’s delay.
It features an all-star cast with Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, and Winona Ryder, to name a few.
This is the second film to be based on the Disney theme park ride The Haunted Mansion, following The Haunted Mansion, which was released in 2003.
The 2023 iteration follows Gabbie (Dawson) and her son Travis (Chase W. Dillon) as they recruit a team of spectral hunters to remove the ghosts living in their home.
Disney hasn’t released a date for when Haunted Mansion will be released on the streaming service, but it likely won’t be for a few months. This is because Disney will want to get as much money theatrically as possible to cover the film’s budget, something that isn’t possible on streaming services.
A logical guess for when the film might appear on streaming services would be around September 8-10 because this is when D23 2023 will be held, which is the event that Disney celebrates its founding, which happened in 1923.
Last year, Disney released new films on Disney+ for D23, including recent cinematic releases. If Haunted Mansion comes to Disney+ on September 8, audiences will only have to wait 42 days or less in other markets where the film releases later, like the UK.
Haunted Mansion is a spooky-themed film, so Disney might wait until Halloween to give it a Disney+ release. If this is the case, audiences will have to wait 95 days until October 31st. This could be what happens because it doesn’t release in some other markets until later on, and Disney might want to give the film a chance to do well.
How long does it take Disney films to come to Disney+?
Disney films don’t have a set schedule for when they come from cinemas to Disney+. Strange Worlds took 30 days to arrive on the service after its cinematic release, but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania took 90 days to arrive on the platform after it was released in US cinemas.
The best comparison to Haunted Mansion, however, is Thor: Love and Thunder . It was released in US cinemas on July 8 and arrived on Disney+ 62 days later on September 8, as part of D23 2022.
Disney could follow a similar model and release Haunted Mansion as part of the celebrations.
Another comparison worth keeping in mind is Lightyear . It was released in the US on June 17 and released on Disney+ 47 days later.
How long a film takes to come to the streaming platform also depends on the box office. If Haunted Mansion does well, then Disney will likely hold off on putting it onto streaming to extend its box office potential.
Will Haunted Mansion be on Netflix?
As Haunted Mansion is a Disney release, the film will not appear on Netflix. Only in a very unlikely scenario would this happen because Disney has their streaming service, Disney+.

'Haunted Mansion': Streaming Release Date and How to Watch From Anywhere
After hitting theaters in the summer, the Disney movie is streaming for Halloween season.

- Though Kourtnee hasn't won any journalism awards yet, she's been a Netflix streaming subscriber since 2012 and knows the magic of its hidden codes.

If you're looking for some family-friendly scares this month, then you'll want to crank up Disney Plus for Haunted Mansion.
A fresh reboot of the 2003 adaptation that previously starred Eddie Murphy, the film debuted in theaters on July 28. Haunted Mansion follows a widow named Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her young son, Travis (Chase Dillion), who move from New York to the haunted Gracey Manor. They become trapped in the mansion, and with the help of a psychic and ghost tour operator, try to make sense of all the ghostly occurrences in the house. They learn a larger, evil plot is at work too.
The movie also features LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Daniel Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost.
If you're ready to witness a supernatural gathering of spirits with a comedic vibe, read on to learn how to watch Haunted Mansion and why a VPN could be a useful tool.

How to watch Haunted Mansion from anywhere with a VPN
Perhaps you're traveling abroad and want to stream Disney Plus while away from home. With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the series from anywhere in the world. There are other good reasons to use a VPN for streaming too.
A VPN is the best way to encrypt your traffic and stop your ISP from throttling your speeds. Using a VPN is also a great idea if you're traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins. Streaming TV can be a bit smoother with a reliable, quality VPN that's passed our tests and security standards.
You can use a VPN to stream content legally as long as VPNs are allowed in your country and you have a valid subscription to the streaming service you're using. The US and Canada are among the countries where VPNs are legal, but we advise against streaming or downloading content on illegal torrent sites. We recommend ExpressVPN, but you may opt for another provider from our best list, such as Surfshark or NordVPN.
Best VPN for streaming
If you're looking for a secure and dependable VPN, our Editors' Choice is ExpressVPN. It's fast, works on multiple devices and provides stable streams. It's normally $13 per month, but you can sign up for ExpressVPN and save 49% -- the equivalent of $6.67 per month -- if you get an annual subscription.
ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Follow the VPN provider's instructions for installation and choose a country where Haunted Mansion will be streaming on Disney Plus. Before you open the streaming app, make sure you're connected to your VPN using your selected region. If you want to stream the film on more than one device, it's possible you'll need to configure each one to ensure you're signed in. Go to settings and check your network connections to verify you're logged in and connected to your VPN account. Now you're ready to open Disney Plus to stream.
If you run into issues with streaming, first make sure your VPN is up and running on its encrypted IP address. Double-check that you've followed installation instructions correctly and you've picked the right geographical area for viewing. If you still encounter connection problems, you may need to reboot your device. Close all apps and windows, restart your device and connect to your VPN first. Note that some streaming services have restrictions on VPN access.

How to watch Haunted Mansion on streaming right now
A perfect Halloween evening.
The movie hasn't been a spooktacular success at the box office, but we're sure it's going to get a second lease of life now.
As Disney confirmed last month, the latest movie adaptation of one of the most iconic Disneyland rides is now available to stream for all subscribers at no extra cost (from Wednesday, October 4).
As with all movie premieres, Haunted Mansion was added to Disney+ at 8am UK time (midnight PT in the US), so it's now available for those planning a spooky movie night at home.

If you're not currently a Disney+ subscriber, you can currently sign up for the special offer of £1.99 a month for three months. The offer is being run until September 20, so you'll have to be quick to take advantage of it.
After the three months is up, your monthly fee will revert to £10.99 which is the new Premium tier for Disney+ from November 1, 2023. There are two other tiers: Standard With Ads for £4.99 or Standard for £7.99.
If you'd rather own a copy of Haunted Mansion than stream it on Disney+, the new movie is also now available to buy digitally.

The movie follows Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son Travis (Chase W Dillon) as they move into an old and dusty mansion they want to transform into a bed & breakfast. Unfortunately, they suspect the place might be haunted.
Desperate to get rid of the ghosts, they end up gathering an unexpected group of people — a cynical tour guide (LaKeith Stanfield), an unconventional priest (Owen Wilson), a fashionable medium (Tiffany Haddish), and a perky professor (Danny DeVito) — in order to help them exorcise their newly acquired home.
If you want to prepare a Halloween double-bill, The Haunted Mansion – the 2003 movie with Eddie Murphy, which has no connection to the 2023 version – is also available to watch right now on Disney+.
Haunted Mansion is now available on Disney+ .

Haunted mansion coming to disney plus in october, the month it probably should’ve been in theaters.
Haunted Mansion
Disney’s latest Haunted Mansion movie opened in the U.S. on July 28, a week after Barbie and Oppenheimer and several months before it’s generally acceptable to start talking about ghosts and ghouls and stuff—which is to say that it opened way too early in the year and that it probably would’ve been better off avoiding “Barbenheimer” and coming out closer to Halloween. The movie has made a little over $100 million worldwide, which isn’t nothing, but its run in the U.S. box office has been fairly slow and it immediately got buried by bigger movies (again, it opened right after Barbie and Oppenheimer).
Well, in what is either an acknowledgement of that mistake or an indication of just how little Disney values the theatrical experience versus streaming (or both), the studio has announced that Haunted Mansion is coming to Disney+… in October. As revealed today in a press release, the film will be available on Disney+ on October 4, the same day it’s available on VOD services. The timing of that release seems to imply that this was always The Plan, because now there will be a hot new Halloween movie on Disney+ for the scarytimes and it already got a tossed-off theatrical release so nobody can get mad about that.

When is the new Haunted Mansion coming to Disney+?
By matthew liebl | jul 29, 2023.

Disney's Haunted Mansion movie arrived in theaters this week but given the lackluster reviews and ease of streaming, you may be content with just waiting to watch it at home. So how long will you have to wait to watch the new Haunted Mansion movie on Disney+?
As the movie just released in theaters, Disney has not yet announced when Haunted Mansion will come to Disney+. But these days, films tend to hit digital and streaming relatively quickly, especially if they don't perform particularly well at the box office.
Typically, Disney movies take between 80 and 90 days to go from theaters to Disney+. Of course, this varies from movie to movie and, again, on box office performance. BLack Panther: Wakanda Forever took 82 days while Ant-Man and the Wasp and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 both took 89 days.
Unfortunately for Disney, all indications -- from reviews to opening day numbers -- are pointing to Haunted Mansion being another flop. Good for those who want to stream, but bad for Disney.
Based on previous release windows, current estimates predict that Haunted Mansion will debut on Disney+ in mid- to late-October (between October 16 and October 15). This would be just in time for Halloween which, honestly, is when I feel the movie should have been released in the first place.
It's worth noting that Haunted Mansion won't release in the UK until August 11, 2023, which means it could see a delayed debut on Disney+ overseas. Or, perhaps, Disney could just wait and have a simultaneous global release. Either way, I think a late-October arrival for Haunted Mansion would be perfect.
If you're waiting to rent or buy it digitally, you'll actually be able to do so sooner. Movies typically arrive on digital about 60 days after their theatrical debut. So we can look out for Haunted Mansion 's digital release some time in late September.

Haunted Mansion coming to Disney Plus in October, the month it probably should’ve been in theaters
What a strange coincidence that the family-friendly ghost movie that opened in theaters in july is now coming to streaming at the perfect time.

The movie has made a little over $100 million worldwide, which isn’t nothing , but its run in the U.S. box office has been fairly slow and it immediately got buried by bigger movies (again, it opened right after Barbie and Oppenheimer ).
Otherwise, if it had come out in theaters in October, it would’ve hit Disney+ in early 2024 or so, and by then it wouldn’t have been as much of a splashy promotion for the streaming service. And if that wasn’t The Plan all along, then it certainly worked out well—at least in theory. Maybe fewer people will log on to Disney+ to watch Haunted Mansion than saw it in theaters.
Haunted Mansion stars LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, and (for some reason) Jared Leto.
Screen Rant
Disney's best haunted mansion movie quietly came out 2 years before $150 million box office disaster.
Disney's 2023 Haunted Mansion reboot garnered poor reviews and bombed at the box office, proving the best adaptation of the attraction is this one.
- The best Haunted Mansion movie adaptation is an under-the-radar Disney+ special which received a fresh 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
- Unlike the previous adaptations, this version balances humor and heart, unlike the other feature-length movies that struggle with an inflated budget and fail to enrich the source material.
Perhaps surprisingly, Disney's best Haunted Mansion movie came out before 2023's $150 million box office disaster. The definitive adaptation of Disney's popular theme park attraction isn’t 2003’s horror-comedy The Haunted Mansion either. In fact, the best movie version of the much-loved property had a dead-silent, straight-to-streaming launch on Disney+ just two years ago. While the recent Haunted Mansion has a disappointing 38% aggregate critical score on Rotten Tomatoes , the Eddie Murphy-led The Haunted Mansion holds an even more upsetting rating: a dismal 13%. Ultimately, neither film elevates its source material, nor do their shoehorned narratives stand out on their own merits.
However, reviews aren’t the only metric that point to these Haunted Mansion movies’ failures. Both the 2003 and 2023 big-budget adaptations of the ghoulish theme park attraction failed at the box office too. In part, that was due to both films’ unwieldy budgets: The Haunted Mansion cost $90 million to make, while the more recent box office bomb Haunted Mansion totaled a staggering $150 million. That said, a third, lesser-known Haunted Mansion adaptation stands as the franchise’s best effort. A more spirited outing, this under-the-radar Disney+ special also didn’t have the chance to be a theatrical misfire.
Muppets Haunted Mansion Is Still Better Than Disney's 2003 & 2023 Movies
With a fresh 73% on Rotten Tomatoes , Muppets Haunted Mansion is not only the best-reviewed adaptation but it's poised to become a seasonal cult classic. The movie’s success hinges on how well the source material and The Muppets brand complement each other. In Muppets Haunted Mansion , Gonzo and Pepe face their fears and spend one night in the ghost-filled titular residence. The movie takes plenty of cues and in-jokes from the popular theme park attraction: Will Arnett takes on the role of Ghost Host, while Miss Piggy appears as "Madam Pigota" - a riff on the ghostly fortune-teller who resides in the mansion's crystal ball.
That said, there are many ways Muppets Haunted Mansion is better than the Eddie Murphy movie (and the 2023 attempt). With timeless wit and charm, the Halloween special leverages the Jim Henson characters’ signature absurdist, self-referential humor to great success. It’s a strategy The Muppets’ team has employed before when adapting popular properties, from 1996's Muppet Treasure Island and 2005's The Muppets' Wizard of Oz . Like these other films, Muppets Haunted Mansion balances humor and heart in a way the feature-length Haunted Mansion movies struggle to do. Plus, the straight-to-streaming approach didn’t hurt: in addition to costing less, the movie probably garnered more Disney+ subscribers.
Why Disney's Haunted Mansion Movies Both Failed At The Box Office & With Critics
In short, Muppets Haunted Mansion succeeds because it works with its source material. Unlike 2003's The Haunted Mansion and 2023's Haunted Mansion , it doesn't inject too much new story into the mix. In the other adaptations, the padded narrative greatly detracts from the fun mansion lore and fails to build any intrigue on its own. It's hard to imagine a scenario in which 2023's Haunted Mansion would have ever made back its wildly inflated budget. It fails to enrich its source material or pay homage, and, like its 2003 predecessor, it suffers from being neither funny nor scary. Muppets Haunted Mansion , however, brings some much-needed life to the franchise.

Haunted Mansion Is Now On Disney+, But I'm Annoyed Two Underrated Spooky Disney Films Are Still Missing
Disney’s new Haunted Mansion movie wasn’t a box office hit; in fact, it's actually a bigger flop than the Eddie Murphy version based on its theatrical release. However, the new Haunted Mansion is, without question, a better film than its 2003 predecessor, and that’s something that more people will become aware of now that the movie is available to stream on Disney+ .
As somebody who loved the new Haunted Mansion movie and all its references to the Haunted Mansion attraction I also enjoy, I certainly hope the movie finds the fans it deserves on Disney+. However, as somebody who apparently has something of a habit of loving spooky movies from Disney , the fact that there are now two Haunted Mansion movies streaming on the service makes it that much more annoying that there are two excellent and underappreciated Disney “horror” movies that you still can’t watch on the Mouse House's streaming service.
Something Wicked This Way Comes Is The Perfect Gateway To Horror
In 1983, Disney adapted Something Wicked This Way Comes, a novel by Ray Bradbury. In the early ‘80s, Disney was in a difficult period as a studio. The company’s most recent animated features had failed to find much of an audience, and nothing the company did in live-action had ever really worked. An attempt was made to go against the traditional image and try to make movies with more mature themes, and Bradbury’s novel seemed like a perfect fit.
The story focuses on two young boys who realize something is amiss when a carnival comes to town that's led by the not-subtly named Mr. Dark, played by a younger and relatively unknown Jonathan Pryce. The film is by no means a horror movie; there’s more frightful imagery on the screen than most Disney films, but it’s still tame by even contemporary horror standards.
The movie was also plagued by production issues, which resulted in director Jack Clayton, who had been suggested as director by Bradbury himself, being taken off the project. There’s a version of the film the world will probably never see, and yet the version we have isn’t without its own charms. The feeling that a great horror movie gives you permeates the film, as it feels dark and disturbing from the start. At least, that’s what I remember, as it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to watch it.
I remember just how the movie unnerved me. There was nothing overtly terrifying on the screen, but there was a feeling of menace that I found hard to shake even after it was over. My own kids are a bit too young for scary movies, but when they get old enough for them, this is where I'd like to start.
The Watcher In The Woods Is Disney At Its Weirdest
Three years before Something Wicked This Way Comes , Disney produced a film called The Watcher in the Woods , which is possibly creepier, absolutely stranger and, without a doubt, more fraught with issues. The film is even more of a cult classic, as the general critical consensus is that it isn’t very good, but where else are you going to find a Disney movie where Bette Davis plays the village crazy lady?
The Watcher in the Woods focuses on two young girls whose parents move them to England, where something strange seems to be happening. Years before, a young girl disappeared in the local woods, and the girls see an apparition of a blindfolded girl in the same woods. Davis plays the missing girl’s mother in what would be one of her final roles.
The Watcher in the Woods was so critically panned upon its initial limited release that the movie was pulled from theaters in New York and the ending was reshot. Still, it’s not like it would be the only movie available to view on Disney+ that wasn’t a massive hit, and there are those who have fond memories of the film regardless of its alleged quality. For many, it was the first scary movie they had ever seen.
Why Are We Still Missing These, And Other Films, On Disney+?
Not seeing these 40-year-old films on Disney+ is, unfortunately, not all that surprising. While Disney+ does better than some streaming services when it comes to listing older material (there are almost 100 years of cartoons to be found, after all), there is still a lot of content that has never been added to Disney+ , and the older it is, the more likely it is to be MIA.
There are some reasons why this might be the case. Much of this older material may only exist in a format that is not easily upload-able to Disney+. A lot of the stuff you can’t find on Disney+ has never been seen on DVD, much less Blu-ray, and so it certainly takes time to convert media to digital formats. With that comes upscaling it or otherwise updating it to make decades-old TV or movies still look as good as possible on modern televisions.
That’s not the case when it comes to these films, however. Something Wicked This Way Comes and Watcher in the Woods were both released on DVD and even on Blu-ray (though there’s some question regarding how much was done to actually upscale the movie for the HD format). But even so, there’s plenty of older movies and shows on Disney+ right now that hasn’t been upconverted to look as beautiful as possible.
Now would be the perfect time to see movies like Something Wicked This Way Comes and Watcher in the Woods added to Disney+. It is the spooky season, after all, and the platform has a lot of great content for Halloween that will still give you the atmosphere you’re looking for without being truly terrifying.
The new Haunted Mansion is a fantastic addition to DIsney+ , and its October release is all but certain to get the movie more viewers than it got during its summer theatrical release. It’s the perfect blend of humor and horror, just like the Disneyland ride that inspired it. But there are some Disney movies that would be even better to watch on Halloween , and I hope that someday soon we actually get to see them.

“Haunted Mansion” Disney+ Release Date Announced

During a special Walt Disney Studio Showcase at the Destination D23 event in Orlando, it was announced that “Haunted Mansion” will be released on Disney+ and on digital retailers to purchase on October 4th 2023. The film will also be released on physical media later that month.
Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Walt Disney Pictures’ “Haunted Mansion” is about a woman and her son who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters.
The film features a standout comedic ensemble cast of LaKeith Stanfield (“Knives Out”), Tiffany Haddish (“Bad Trip”), Owen Wilson (Marvel’s “Loki”), Danny DeVito (“Jumanji: The Next Level”), Rosario Dawson (“Zombieland: Double Tap”), Chase W. Dillon (“The Underground Railroad”) and Daniel Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) with Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Academy Award winner Jared Leto (“House of Gucci”).
Whilst the film pays homage to the original ride and its charm, the film also explores many culturally authentic themes while simultaneously bringing to the fore some deeper themes. The result is a classic family movie. Like the ride itself it will play some magic tricks on the audience, because while it’s a story that should absolutely make the audience laugh and feel a sense of escape, it could also transform their fears about death and grief into something that we can actually face and overcome.
