What's new for 2024.

The Phantom receives no updates for the 2024 model year, just a slight increase in pricing. The Phantom's styling, powertrain and features otherwise remain and provides the same luxurious feeling sedan from the previous model year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

Engine, transmission, and performance.

Prodigious power is provided by a silken 563-hp twin-turbo V-12 paired with an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. Acceleration is brisk, but Rolls-Royce's claimed 5.1-second zero-to-60-mph time isn't anything you'd appreciate your chauffeur trying to replicate. The Phantom is better suited to easing along lazily; delicate inputs to throttle and steering are what it likes best. To say that the ride is smooth would be an understatement—imagine being carried aloft on a fluffy cloud. The Phantom practically levitates over the road; it features a pothole-spotting camera that helps the suspension adapt to road imperfections in real time. It's a library-quiet, sensory-deprivation cocoon.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

A Phantom owner's conspicuous consumption is matched by the car's penchant for consuming fuel. The EPA's fuel-economy estimates run as low as 12-mpg city, although the Phantom's 20-mpg highway rating actually bests the smaller Rolls-Royce Ghost's by 2 mpg. If we ever are lucky enough to have a chance to put the Phantom through our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, we'll update this story with test results. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Acres of wood, metal accents, and vast expanses of supple leather cover the cabin, which is no surprise for a car of this class. But there’s so much more: for instance, should you want to use your Phantom to support the arts, you can specify custom artwork in place of the standard instrument panel trim. Rolls-Royce offers both a standard- and long-wheelbase version of the Phantom, the latter stretched by 8.6 inches, much of which results as additional rear-seat legroom. Rear-hinged coach doors open to allow graceful and dramatic arrivals and departures. Rear-seat passengers can be treated to myriad luxuries such as deep-pile carpeted floor mats, power-adjustable seats with massage, a refrigerated console compartment for libations, remote controls for the infotainment system, and much, much more.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Speaking of infotainment, the Phantom comes standard with a large infotainment display artfully hidden behind a glass panel that stretches the full width of the dashboard. It's controlled via a rotary knob on the center console. Lest you think that rear-seat passengers are left out of the technology loop, the Phantom also features touchscreens that motor down from each of the front seatbacks to provide access to the car's audio and navigation systems, as well as a live-TV tuner so passengers won't fall behind on their favorite shows or sports while on the way to their next engagement.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Phantom's dizzying array of optional tech includes night vision and a distinct laser-light system, but Rolls-Royce also offers more conventional driver-assistance features such as forward-collision and lane-departure warnings as standard. ROCHESTER, Mich. — Dudes associated with Rolls-Royce have said some pretty memorable things. T.E. Lawrence called the cars “above rubies,” while Charles Royce presciently observed — in 1900 no less — “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration. They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged.” 

I’m not into jewelry, so the 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre is definitely better than rubies, and it’s an EV with a lot of character and purpose. Chuck and Tom were right.

This luxury grand tourer is one of the best cars I’ve ever driven — as it should be given it starts at $422,750 — but it also succeeds as an EV. 

Here’s five thoughts as to why.

1. It’s dressed impeccably

My test car has a striking two-tone exterior of Arctic White and Midnight Black, recalling a signature cue of great Rollers of the past. A spokesman said two-tone paint dates to the 1920s, notably on the Phantom V, then took off during the coachbuilt cars in the ‘30s. By the 1950s, the paint scheme had become a Rolls-Royce calling card.

It looks like the Spectre is wearing a tuxedo. Upon arriving for my drive at Meadow Brook Hall, a century-old mansion with a history almost as deep as Rolls, I was asked if I had a preference. There was a pink car , a pretty blue one and some others. I pointed at this one immediately.

Furthering the coachbuilt vibe, you get in and out of the car via two huge rear-opening doors. Like on other Rolls-Royces, they can open and close themselves.

2. What an interior

Naturally, it’s a beautiful cabin. The wood, chrome and leather look and feel rich. The one I tested has a gorgeous blue interior with a navy blue backdrop and sky blue accenting along the top of the dash. A sliver and white clock is set in the middle of the instrument panel. The seats are two-tone blue with the RR crest embroidered in the headliners. There’s a fair amount of room in the backseat, and my knees didn't even touch the seat in front of me. 

The turn-by-turn navigation is outstanding. There's a camera in the middle of the dashboard with arrows telling you which way to go. It's not distracting because the aesthetic of the Spectre’s dashboard is so simple, yet elegant.

It's a quiet cabin — more serene than the Cullinan — and stoutly keeps the outside world at bay. Look up and you’re greeted by the Starry Night Sky . Look down and note the plush carpet. I encourage you to drive barefoot.

3. Versus the Cullinan

To frame the Spectre’s position in the Rolls-Royce line, I felt it best to compare it to the other non-traditional model, the Cullinan. The Spectre EV coupe is more of a luxury item than the Cullinan SUV, in my opinion . While the latter is beautifully appointed, it’s still a barge of a vehicle. I’ll concede that many Rolls-Royce owners would prefer to be driven, and the Cullinan offers a better “champagne start.” But from a design and fun-to-drive perspective, the Spectre has more character.

4. It’s one the best coupes I’ve driven

It's one of the best coupes that I've ever driven. It's relaxing and comfortable thanks to a well-tuned suspension. The steering is outstanding. It's light on center yet there's some engagement that makes the Spectre rewarding to drive. With the four-wheel steering, it's easy to almost make this car pivot. 

Acceleration is powerful in a tasteful manner that’s unique to Rolls. The Spectre will hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, and that feels accurate. It could be quicker, but Rolls feels it’s more on-brand to launch smoothly rather than offer the seat-pulling twist found in other EVs. The Spectre has 584 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, so do the math, it could be faster than 4.4 if Rolls desired.

There are some enormous blind spots for the driver looking out the left side, as the mirror and A-Pillar are right in the line of sight. Despite the long hood, the forward visibility is solid.

5. There’s no range anxiety, charging challenges or cost issues

Like a lot of things for Rolls-Royce owners, the problems of the world don’t apply to them. Most charge at home and can reasonably expect to not exceed the Spectre’s 260-mile range. Yes, Rolls charges its customers for the battery technology, like all automakers do. The difference: Rolls owners can afford the markup.

Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos retires after boosting sales sixfold

Torsten Muller-Otvos, the Rolls-Royce CEO who turned an aging brand into a coveted badge of success for pop stars, athletes and young entrepreneurs, is retiring after 14 years.

• Muller-Otvos brought new shine to the Rolls-Royce brand and became a leader in the luxury world by attracting a new generation of wealthy buyers.
• "The brand is contemporary today, I would say cool again," Muller-Otvos told CNBC. "That indicates to me that we got it right, not just me but the entire team."

Rolls-Royce announced Thursday that Muller-Otvos, 63, the longest-serving CEO of Rolls-Royce in nearly a century, will retire on Dec. 1. He will be succeeded by Chris Brownridge, currently chief executive officer of BMW UK.

Muller-Otvos brought new shine to the Rolls-Royce brand and became a leader in the luxury world by attracting a new generation of wealthy buyers. With sleek models like the fastback Wraith, and edgy design schemes like Black Badge, Rolls-Royce's sales grew more than sixfold during his tenure, from 1,000 cars sold in 2010 to more than 6,000 last year.

The average age of a Rolls-Royce buyer fell from 56 to 43. One in 5 buyers today is a celebrity.

"The brand is contemporary today, I would say cool again," Muller-Otvos told CNBC. "That indicates to me that we got it right, not just me but the entire team. That makes me extremely proud as I look back and see what a fabulous, fabulous journey we had."

Muller-Otvos also launched Rolls-Royce into its next big chapter with last year's unveiling of the first fully electric Rolls, called Spectre. The two-door, 577-horsepower behemoth can do zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds and is already sold out in the U.S. through 2025, despite its steep price of more than $413,000.

The big question going forward for Rolls is whether it can maintain its cool factor, and strong sales, if the U.S. economy starts to falter. The U.S. remains its largest market, and while Mutter-Otvos said demand and orders remain strong, the company is always prepared for a correction.

"The luxury market is not immune against any recessionary developments," he said. "For us, the business is still very strong, but it is on a different level compared to what it used to be right after the pandemic. I would say that has normalized now to levels we are used to, but we are still in a very strong position."

Muller-Otvos is the longest-serving CEO of Rolls-Royce since Claude Johnson, who brought Charles Rolls and Henry Royce together in 1904 and served until 1926.

Muller-Otvos said when he joined Rolls-Royce, it was an elite brand that was aging fast. Its signature, the four-door Phantom, was designed for chauffeurs to ferry around members of the graying leisure class smoothly and silently. Muller-Otvos visited private bankers around the world to find out how the wealthy were quickly changing — especially with the rise of tech wealth.

"That was quite an eye-opening moment," he said. "All the private banks told me their clients were getting younger, far more informal and with a lot more women. We said to ourselves, we need something to attract this younger consumer. It needed to be rejuvenated. That's not something you can do in just two years. That is a long, long story that takes many years to achieve."

In 2013, Rolls-Royce unveiled the Wraith, a racy, two-door coupe with a twin-turbo V12 that was designed for the wealthy to drive, rather than to be driven in.

That was followed in 2015 by the Dawn convertible, and in 2019 by the Cullinan SUV, which became a favorite of NBA stars and other big athletes. Rolls-Royce debuted the Black Badge line in 2016, featuring higher performance and an all-black color scheme (including the famous Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament).

Muller-Otvos also ushered in a new era of customization, which lured new customers and bigger profit margins. Dubbed "Bespoke," the program allows Rolls-Royce buyers to choose their own fabrics, paint colors, materials and interior lighting schemes to make a one-of-a-kind Rolls.

The customization program is one reason the average sale price of a Rolls-Royce has doubled since Muller-Otvos took over, to about 500,000 euros ($527,000).

"None of our clients want just a product off the shelf," he said. "They want it to carry their individual signature and their individual story. We have put a lot of resources into Bespoke and now every car leaving [our factory] is fully bespoke."

Do you offer factory tours of Goodwood?

Unfortunately, we no longer offer a public tour programme. Should this change in the future, we will update our website. 

Can I have a brochure?

All brochures can be viewed and downloaded within the model pages online or within enquiries. We no longer produce printed brochures.

Do you offer work experience placements?

Regrettably, due to the volume of requests we receive for work experience placements from the children of our employees, we are unable to offer a placement at this time.

Looking further to the future, we offer a range of Apprenticeships and a Graduate Scheme, details of which can be found on the careers page on our website.

We receive many requests for submission of design ideas and we are not permitted to accept ideas from any persons outside of the business. 

I need information about my classic Rolls-Royce (built prior to 2003)

All motorcars built before 2003 (both Rolls-Royce and Bentley) and their related history are dealt with by the Bentley organisation. The Bentley Heritage website  could be a useful source of information for you. How can I request sponsorship from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars?

We receive many requests for sponsorship, funding and donations, and whilst we are a keen supporter of local charities sadly we cannot support every worthy cause which is brought to our attention. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars selects a house charity each year to be our primary charitable focus, for 2019 the charity we have chosen is Home-Start Arun.

Home-Start Arun promotes the welfare of families in the Arun, Worthing and Adur District Council areas, to alleviate stress and conflict at home and prevent family crisis and breakdown.

A certificate of conformity is no longer available directly from our head office. Requests are now dealt with by any authorised Rolls-Royce Motor Cars dealerships.
