How Getting Tattooed Became a Friday the 13th Tradition
Friday the 13 th has long had a spooky reputation in the U.S., right up there with black cat crossings and shattered mirrors. But in the world of tattoos, Friday the 13 th has become something like an anticipated holiday when thousands of people get inked.
It started when Oliver Peck, co-owner of Texas tattoo shop Elm Street Tattoo , decided to tattoo the number 13 on as many people as possible, back-to-back, over a 24-hour period on Friday, June 13, 2008. All told, he managed to tattoo 415 people. Tattoo shops across the country followed suit, including New York City’s Daredevil Tattoo , the first to open after New York legalized tattooing in 1997.
I spoke with Michelle Myles, co-owner of Daredevil Tattoo, about how the tattoo industry got involved with Friday the 13 th and what it’s like to celebrate such an ominous day. Here’s our conversation, lightly edited and condensed for clarity.
Shirin Ali: What do you think connects tattooing with Friday the 13 th ?
Michelle Myles: Well, it’s just something that Oliver Peck thought of, and people really like cheap tattoos! Tattoos have always kind of reflected lucky or unlucky talismans. It’s kind of like how people would get Grim Reaper tattoos. I have a Mr. Lucky tattoo on my shoulder that’s a skull with a top hat. He’s got “13, 13, 13” in his hat band, and I got that in the early 1990s, before Friday the 13 th was a thing [for tattoos]. I think people enjoy tempting fate or making fun of it a little bit. Skulls have always been a really popular image, and that type of stuff can be intimidating in some ways, which people like to embrace for tattoos, maybe as a way to laugh at ill fate or unlucky things. It’s a way to maybe not be afraid of them, or just to embrace it and be aligned with it, you know?
I think Friday the 13 th or just “13” tattoos in general have always been the kind of imagery that people have liked for tattooing.
How did Daredevil Tattoo get started in the Friday the 13 th tattoo tradition?
We started doing the Friday the 13 th thing around 2000. Oliver in Texas was the first one who was doing it, and so we had this tattoo artist at our shop who was friends with Oliver. She wanted to do the same thing, and I said sure. I think she tattooed like five or six of her friends, and then the next time it rolled around, a couple more artists in the shop were like, “Oh, we want to do it, too,” and I said sure. Eventually everybody at the shop wanted to do the Friday the 13 th thing.
But then somebody from Fuse network wanted to film at our shop and do a little profile, and it was right before Friday the 13 th , and I said, “Actually, Friday the 13 th is coming up and we have this special that we do.” And so that was why I ended up continuing it at the shop, to have something for Fuse to film. When the next Friday the 13 th came around, people were calling us from all over the country, asking if they could come in. We had people that were flying in from California, and when I was going to the grocery store, people were recognizing me because of the Fuse network thing. At that point it started to get really crazy. We did it for a few years, and after that other shops started to do it. All these years later and now it’s turned into a whole thing, which is kind of crazy.
What are some other popular tattoos that people get on Friday the 13 th ?
Whatever we can do really quickly is probably the No. 1 feature of a Friday the 13 th tattoo. Since we were the first ones doing this in New York, and we’ve been doing it for so long, our shop is a very popular destination for Friday the 13 th . We’ve really streamlined the process and we’re very good at accommodating a lot of people. Sometimes we tattoo 100 to 200 people, depending on the designs. The priority is to do something that’s fun, but still allows us to get through the line of people that show up at the shop.
As far as imagery goes, people will get unlucky and lucky things. Some of the unlucky ones are skulls and Grim Reapers and the number 13 or lightning bolts. It’s just anything that’s fun and quirky. We definitely have some customers who have been coming in for the last 20 years and they have a whole collection of these little designs. There’s this one family that would come in all together, it was Mom, Dad, and the kids. For us, it’s sort of like the closest we can get to how tattooing used to be. It used to be when you came in to get tattooed, you’d just come in, pick something off the wall, and that was what you got. It wasn’t this whole production, about people having custom ideas and spending a lot of time drawing stuff up. You just came in, picked something, sat down, you got tattooed, and that was that.
What makes this upcoming Friday the 13 th special compared to previous years?
It’s always fun when it lands in October because then you have a spooky theme to the day. And I always like October because the weather is still nice. I’m always a little worried whenever there’s a Friday the 13 th in January and it’s going to be freezing outside. We try to make it as fun of a day for everybody as possible. Part of that is taking people’s names and giving them a number so they can go walk around the neighborhood and spend money with our neighbors—eating, drinking, getting a coffee, or whatever. We want it to be fun for everybody, because it’s a stressful, long day. It’s definitely grueling.
Plus, tattoos are expensive these days, so I like that people can still come into Daredevil, a world-renowned tattoo shop, and afford to get tattooed here for $40. Even some punk kid like I was when I got my first tattoo can still come in and afford to get tattooed at our shop. We really like it as a way to connect with new people, and also to have fun with our friends and make new friends for the day. I really love that it gives us a chance to get a little taste of what tattooing was like back in the old days, before it became this more gentrified version of itself.

Every Mike Flanagan Netflix horror series, ranked (including 'Fall of the House of Usher')

Stephen King might be the master of horror, but on Netflix Mike Flanagan is royalty. Like, the crown prince of spooks or something.
After doing a few scary movies for the streamer – "Hush," "Before I Wake" and an adaptation of King's "Gerald's Game" – the writer/director made a cottage industry out of creating creepy shows for Halloween. These series in the "Flanaverse" boast a repertory company of actors and usually some sort of literary influence: For example, his latest, "The Fall of the House of Usher" (now streaming), reworks Edgar Allan Poe stories. But while it's fun to visit the Flanaverse, you wouldn't want to live there. Most of its residents die and become ghosts, ghouls or vampires, though often very artfully.
Whether you're a superfan digging into "House of Usher" or need to catch up on all the previous series first, here are Flanagan's five Netflix series, ranked:
5. 'The Midnight Club' (2022)
Based on Christopher Pike's 2004 young-adult novel (and other Pike stories), the mystery series centers on a young woman named Ilonka (Iman Benson), who's placed into hospice with thyroid cancer. She joins a group of other terminally ill teens who secretly meet at midnight to tell scary tales (and reveal their backstories) while unearthing secrets of the place's dark history. More emotional than terrifying, "Club" ended up canceled with a ton of hanging plot threads, but brought horror icon Heather Langenkamp ("A Nightmare on Elm Street") back to the genre and made Irish standout Ruth Codd a new member of the Flanaverse regulars.
4. 'The Fall of the House of Usher' (2023)
Powerful siblings Roderick (Bruce Underwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) run a corrupt pharmaceutical corporation, and just as the law comes for them, so does something supernatural. Roderick comes clean with a police investigator (Carl Lumbly) about the strange deaths of his six heirs – told through modern reimaginings of Poe tales like "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" – as well as the Ushers' auspicious rise back in the day and how a mysterious raven-haired woman (Carla Gugino) plays a role in both past and present. Flanagan really embraces his horror roots with some seriously gory scenes (including one gnarly sequence involving acid and a rave) and brings Poe back to pop culture in a major way.

3. 'The Haunting of Hill House' (2018)
The supernatural family drama is a loose adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 1959 book – an all-timer of a ghost story – that takes place over two timelines. In the 1990s, Hugh (Henry Thomas) and Olivia Crain (Gugino) move their five kids into a fixer-upper mansion. But in the process of flipping it, they find it's full of all kinds of paranormal weirdness (like the Bent-Neck Lady!) and end up fleeing the place in the dead of night. Decades later, the estranged siblings and their dad (now played by Timothy Hutton) are still processing what happened when a tragedy brings them back together. And the series lives up to that "haunting" part: One intricately crafted episode set in a funeral home will chill you to the bone.

2. 'The Haunting of Bly Manor' (2020)
Victoria Pedretti, who stars in the most frightening "Hill House" scene, follows up that performance with a lead role in this 1980s-set gothic retooling of Henry James' works (most notably the 1898 novella "The Turn of the Screw"). Dani (Pedretti) is a young American hired as a governess for a pair of orphaned British kids, and she moves to a grand family estate in the English countryside. She becomes fast friends with the housekeeper (T’Nia Miller), chef (Rahul Kohli) and groundskeeper (Amelia Eve) while faced with phantom apparitions and dark figures (including a faceless Lady of the Lake). Through many twists and creepy turns, "Bly Manor" winds up a harrowing yet surprisingly heartfelt story about ghosts, love and ghosts who fall in love.

1. 'Midnight Mass' (2021)
Flanagan's masterwork about religion, addiction and redemption is also his most original effort, though there is still some literary inspiration: the Bible. Riley Flynn (Zach Gilford) returns to his island community home after losing his faith while serving four years in jail for killing a woman in a drunk-driving accident. This black sheep's arrival coincides with that of the new priest Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), and a rash of miracles and supernatural incidents spark a holy revival, though there is definitely a darkness enveloping the isolated place. "Mass" is a soulful blend of what Flanagan does best, blending emotional gravitas with sheer terror, and it also intriguingly reinvents a classic monster archetype.

The story of Michigan’s most infamous ghost town
Did a witch curse the village of pere cheney.
Ken Haddad , Digital Managing Editor
A Michigan “ghost town” has a reputation for ghostly behavior.
Pere Cheney, also known as Cheney or Center Plains, was a village in Crawford County, Michigan.
It was settled by lumberjacks in 1874. But the village was abandoned by 1917.
How Pere Cheney became a ghost town
After being established in 1874 by founder George Cheney, the village received a land grant from the Michigan Central Railroad Co. to create a stop along the railroad.
The village had a general store, sawmills, a hotel and a post office.
By the 1870s, its population was approximately 1,500 people.
Diphtheria, an infection spread through the air, wiped out much of the population in 1893.
While the village was trying to recover, fires broke out, leaving much of the village damaged. The fires were likely caused by sparks from mills behind the village.
Disease returned again in 1897, and by 1901 the town's population was only 25.
In 1917, with the population under 20, the land was sold in a public auction, and Pere Cheney became a ghost town.
All that remains today is the Pere Cheney cemetery, which some call a literal ghost town.
Pere Cheney Cemetery
The Pere Cheney cemetery is filled with ghost stories. Perhaps the most popular, is the legend of the witch.
Local legend says a witch cursed the village she was banished to the woods, which many blame for the outbreak of disease, and the disastrous fires.
The cemetery itself contains the graves of about 90 people - one of which is rumored to be the witch's grave.
Some say people from surrounding towns set Pere Cheney on fire to prevent the spread of disease. But some believe they were caused by the witch.
She was later hanged from a tree in the cemetery and her body was buried.
Visitors to the cemetery have reported seeing ghosts, figures, glowing orbs, lights and hearing voices.
Some have reported hearing children laughing and seeing handprints on their cars.
The only vegetation that grows in Pere Cheney is moss.
Nycki Moggo, a Grayling, Michigan native , visited the cemetery - and documented what she saw:
Is Pere Cheney Cemetery haunted? I believe that it is but not to the extent others make it out to be. I have probably been there at least 200 times over the years and maybe 10 of those times I have had something strange happen to me and others that were with me. I have had my car radio switch channels for no reason, my car not wanting to start (at the time I had a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix and this happened in the spring of 1998). A few times we have heard children giggling and laughing VERY close to the car late at night. One particular time there were small handprints all over the roof of my car after we left the cemetery. On Halloween of 2002, myself and three others saw an apparition of a woman in a light colored dress walking through the rear of the cemetery, then disappeared all at once. That's about it. I've never been chased.. I've never seen a witch. I've never felt like someone was trying to lynch me (one of the many Pere Cheney stories--this one involving a large oak tree in the center of the cemetery). The temperature has fluctuated from time to time but it wasn't anything worth writing home about. I do not feel an overwhelming sadness there but I do feel a peculiar energy I cannot fully explain. However, I feel this was when I walk into any cemetery.
Below are some video tours of the cemetery.
I actually visited the cemetery in the summer of 2020, and I have to say, it was a beautiful and peaceful place -- and I did not see any witches or ghosts. If you want to visit, it’s a bit of backroad experience, but Google Maps will get you there.

Princess Diana’s Ghostly Presence on Netflix Is “Incredibly Hurtful”: Prince William
By Eve Batey

Fictional takes on royal families have always had their fair share of ghosts, from Banquo's haunting of Macbeth to Hamlet's spectral father. But those phantoms are from long ago, making them notably uncontroversial figures. The same can't be said for Princess Diana, whose death still remains fresh for many royal watchers—and whose family still mourns her passing. That might be why some UK residents and her family are reportedly aghast at rumors that the next season of Netflix series The Crown will feature the Princess of Wales in spirit form.
Earlier this week, news broke that the two-part final season of The Crown will span events from 1997-2005, as the family recovers from Diana's death (as depicted in season five ). According to the Daily Mail , that includes a scene in which a ghostly Diana ( Elizabeth Debicki ) appears to Prince—now King— Charles ( Dominic West ), telling him, "You know I loved you so much. So deeply, so painfully, too. That's over now. It will be easier for everyone with me gone."
In another scene, she reportedly appears to Queen Elizabeth ( Imelda Staunton ), telling her, "I know it must be terrifying… As long as anyone can remember, you've taught us what it means to be British. Maybe it's time to show you're ready to learn, too."
An unnamed friend of King Charles and Queen Camilla says the couple is unconcerned by the rumors of a phantom princess. The pair "don't really care," the friend told The Daily Beast . "It's pretty ridiculous at this stage anyway. I think the program has lost the credibility it had in the early years."
Prince William , however, appears less comfortable with the fictional take on his family, especially when it comes to his late mother. "It's incredibly hurtful to have his mother exploited over and over again in this tawdry fashion by Netflix," an unnamed intimate of his tells The Daily Beast . "He won't watch it, but he will be totally sickened by it."
A spokesperson for Netflix takes issue with any potential upset, the Independent reports . "These sensitive and thoughtful imagined conversations seek to bring to life the depth of emotion that was felt after such a seismic tragedy struck at the heart of the family," an unnamed spokesperson for the streamer says.
"After her death, Diana appears as part of an inner dialogue in separate scenes with Prince Charles and the Queen, who are both reflecting on their relationship with the late Princess."
While these fictional ghosts might quite understandably give Diana's survivors pause, it's also worth noting that the Winsdors have a history of receiving messages from the beyond. It's long been rumored that Charles's mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was visited by the spirit of Elizabeth I (who died in 1603 ) while in the library room at Windsor Castle. Then, during Queen Elizabeth's funeral ceremony at Westminster Abbey, social media users mistook a plume from a helmet of one of the King's Body Guards of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms as a spectral figure.
Even Sarah Ferguson , the former spouse of Elizabeth's embattled son, Prince Andrew , is privy to ghostly encounters, it appears. In March, the Duchess of York told People that she adopted the Queen's corgis, Sandy and Muick, after Elizabeth's passing. The pups are "total joys," she said, before elaborating on their mystical powers. "I always think that when they bark at nothing, and there's no squirrels in sight, I believe it's because the Queen is passing by."
The first part of The Crown's sixth and final season will be released on Netflix on Nov. 16.

10 Ghost Stories for Kids and Teens that Won't Keep Them Up All Night
These funny, creepy tales are perfect for telling around a campfire.
These kid-friendly scary tales are best told around the campfire or with the lights out for full effect, and you can tell our short versions below or click on the links for longer ones.
Each of these 10 ghost stories for kids are sure to bring on some goosebumps but hopefully not keep anyone from sleeping. So read on for some some spooktacular stories to tell all season long, and perhaps get passed on in future years.

The Ghost of the Bloody Finger
A little gory, slightly spooky, this is a story about a bloody finger inching ever closer to a man spending the night alone in a haunted house. It ends with a joke, however, so all that tension is released with a good giggle. For extra fun, be sure to use a sinister voice for the ghost, making it louder and scarier the closer he gets—right up until the last line, when asks for a Band-Aid. Then, he can sound as congenial as Casper the Friendly Ghost.
The Big Toe
Also known as The Hairy Toe, this is a classic story about an old woman who finds a toe in the woods and, depending on the version, eats it (ewwww) or puts it in glass jar. The tale gets creepier as the toe's very large owner comes looking for it, but the fantasy/folklore feel of it helps keeps things light, as does the ending. Children of all ages should be able to enjoy this fable without getting too frightened.

The Ball Pit
More of a play on parental worries about ball pits than a story addressing any kids' concerns (come on, do you think they fret about those things being a bacteria factory the way we do?), "The Ball Pit" is really an urban legend instead of a proper ghost story. But while it may have kids pondering the potential hidden dangers in their favorite play space for a moment or two, the silly ending will get everyone laughing.
Most kids love a good play on words, and this uncanny story about a coffin chasing a man all the way from the cemetery to his bathroom ends with the king daddy of all puns. As you tell the tale, be sure to emphasize the scary BUMP BUMP BUMP sound the coffin makes as it clomps down the street following the poor fellow. You might even want to have a bottle of cough syrup ready to hold up, too, showing what the man throws to stop the coffin. ( They'll love it. Trust us.)
Yellow Ribbon
Spooky to be sure, this long-told-tale revolves around a married couple and the yellow ribbon the woman wears around her neck, which she refuses to remove. Various versions have him untying it while she's sleeping, or the wife allowing her husband to take it off, but it all ends the same way: with her losing her head—and we don't mean metaphorically.

This rollicking ghost story has everything kids love: pirates, hidden treasure, and rowdy, glowing skeletons. The legend goes that on one dark night, the infamous buccaneer Captain Kidd and his crew showed up on the coast, burying their ill-gotten gains on a quiet stretch of sandy land. The treasure was never seen again—except on certain evenings, when the phantom pirates sail in to unearth it once more, celebrating by singing, dancing jigs and telling tales about their days sailing the high seas.
The Lady with the Emerald Ring
A parable about greed, this story set in the late 18th-century actually has a happy ending, well...for some of the characters. The story involves a woman, believed dead, a vicar who steals her emerald ring, and the bad end that comes to him. The only ghost in this story is the one the woman's husband believes her to be, but that's doesn't mean this story isn't spooky.

If you're hosting a gathering of older kids, this is the urban legend for you. Like "The Lady with the Emerald Ring" and "Yellow Ribbon," you can have fun stretching the story out, building the suspense the longer it goes. The story of a couple who park in Lover's Lane, ignoring reports of an escaped killer from a local asylum, it ends with the kind of scare that will have kids jumping out of the their sleeping bags.
The Thing at the Foot of the Bed
Short and (not quite so) sweet, this is a cautionary tale for little ones about an old man who awakens in terror at the thing he sees lurking at the foot of his bed. He takes drastic action instead of investigating, much to his regret. Both spooky and amusing, this story could help kids understand that the scary things at night they think they see in their closet and under the bed are just figments of their imagination.
Fifty-Cent Piece
Not all ghosts are scary. Some just want to be helpful, like the spirits in this story, who host a husband and wife too tired to continue their travels. The pair leave a coin as thanks the next morning, but soon hear the truth about the old couple from neighboring villagers. Eerie rather than disturbing, this story can be told to all ages.

HANSEL AND GRETEL
Hansel and Gretel lived with their father and stepmother beside a great forest. One night their father, who was a poor woodcutter, told his wife that they had no money left. “I don’t know how we shall feed ourselves,” he sighed. His wife had no love for Hansel and Gretel and saw this as a chance to be rid of them. “We must take the children into the forest tomorrow and leave them there,” she told her husband. “Then we’ll only have two mouths to feed.”
DOWN BY THE WATER

THE WATER WITCH
William was a poor cowherd who loved a dairymaid called Bella. One day, he decided to give up work on the farm to seek his fortune. “I shall come home with my pockets full of gold so that we can be married,” he promised Bella. Bella didn’t want William to go but he was determined. When it was time for him to leave, Bella fetched three things that her father had given her before he died. The first was a little bell which could be heard by a friend in time of danger. The second was a knife which had the power to undo any enchantment and the third was a staff which would take its owner wherever they wanted to go. Bella gave William the bell and the knife. “I shall keep the staff,” she said and with a heavy heart she wished him good luck.
