Disney’s Haunted Mansion filming locations: Where was the movie filmed?

Haunted Mansion is now streaming on Disney+. But just where was this wild comedy based on the classic Disney attraction filmed?

Since 1969, the Haunted Mansion has been one of Disney’s most iconic rides. Replicated at every Disney park worldwide, the classic Mansion has guests going through a spooky haunted house of 999 spirits. It was adapted into a 2003 movie starring Eddie Murphy.

The 2023 film has Rosario Dawson as a woman moving herself and her son into a New Orleans mansion only to find it’s haunted. They turn to a troubled filmmaker (LaKeith Stanfield), a priest (Owen Wilson), a psychic (Tiffany Haddish) and a scholar (Danny DeVito) to discover the secrets of the mansion and the twisted Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) ready to unleash some evil.

The movie is packed with scores of effects and a gothic New Orleans setting, but where was it really filmed?

Where was the Haunted Mansion movie filmed?

Per the official New Orleans website, much of the movie was shot on location in the Big Easy. True, the interiors of the mansion were soundstages that could handle all the special effects, but the exterior utilized the famous Buckner Mansion in the Garden District. That makes total sense, as the original Disneyland Haunted Mansion was based on the very location in the city.

Several other New Orleans locations were used, from Lafayette Cemetary for a jazz funeral to Jackson Square. There’s also famous watering holes like the Napolean House or Lafitte’s Blacksmith Tavern. Royal Street was also used for the home of Stanfield’s character and Tulane University “played itself” as the spot for DeVito’s character.

The movie did a good job integrating the New Orleans locations into the fun and making the Mansion truly feel alive for a fun watch on Disney+.

Where Was Haunted Mansion Filmed?

Naman Shrestha of Where Was Haunted Mansion Filmed?

A reboot of the 2003 eponymous movie and the second theatrical film adaptation of Walt Disney’s theme park attraction The Haunted Mansion, Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ is a supernatural horror comedy movie that centers upon a single mother, Gabbie, and her son Travis who move into a newly bought mansion, which turns out to be haunted by ghosts. In order to exorcise the mansion once and for all, Gabbie enlists the help of a motley crew consisting of spiritual experts, including a former paranormal investigator turned tour guide, a priest, a psychic, and a college history professor.

Directed by Justin Simien, the film is driven by compelling performances by a star-studded ensemble cast comprising LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson , Danny DeVito, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and  Jared Leto . Given the eerie backdrop of the haunted mansion and the surrounding areas, the viewers are likely to be curious about the actual filming sites of ‘Haunted Mansion.’ If you are in the same boat, we have got you covered!

Haunted Mansion Filming Locations

‘Haunted Mansion’ was filmed in Louisiana and Georgia, especially in New Orleans and Metro Atlanta. As per reports, principal photography for the horror comedy film commenced in early October 2021 and wrapped up in late February 2022. Now, let’s not waste any time and get a detailed account of all the specific locations that make an appearance in the Disney movie!

New Orleans, Louisiana

The consolidated city parish of New Orleans is known for its historical architecture as well as paranormal activity in certain areas, which make it the perfect filming site for a production based on a haunted mansion filled with lots of twists and turns, scares, laughs, and a hint of the signature Disney magic. So, first and foremost, the exterior of the haunted mansion in the movie is that of the Buckner Mansion at 1410 Jackson Avenue in New Orleans. It was constructed in 1856 for the cotton kingpin Henry Sullivan Buckner, whose intention was to own a bigger and grander home as compared to his ex-partner and rival, Frederick Stanton.

The production team set up camp in and around various other establishments across New Orleans, including Napolean House at 500 Chartres Street, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar at 941 Bourbon Street, Preservation Hall at 726 Street Peter, Voodoo Authentica Inc at 612 Dumaine Street, Jackson Square, formerly known as the Place d’Armes or Plaza de Armas, and Tulane University at 6823 St. Charles Avenue. Several exterior scenes for ‘Haunted Mansion’ were also taped in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 at 1427 Washington Avenue, Royal Street, and the Crescent City Connection.

Metro Atlanta, Georgia

A significant portion of ‘Haunted Mansion’ was also taped in Metro Atlanta AKA the Atlanta metropolitan area. Atlanta, which is the metropolitan area’s economic, cultural, and demographic center, served as one of the primary production locations. The filming unit reportedly traveled across the city of Atlanta and recorded several important scenes against suitable backdrops.

Apart from Atlanta, the production team also made the most of the facilities of Trilith Studios at 461 Sandy Creek Road in the city of Fayetteville. A majority of the interior scenes of the haunted mansion were lensed in a sound stage of the film studio. Situated near Atlanta’s international airport, the film studio is home to 24 different sound stages with a myriad of options with flexibility when it comes to size and function. Other than that, it also consists of over 400 acres of unique landscapes, including city streets and fields, in the backlot area. All these amenities and more make Trilith Studios an ideal production location for different kinds of film projects.

The House in Haunted Mansion Looks Exactly Like the Iconic Disneyland Attraction

Production designer Darren Gilford and his team studied the "Haunted Mansion Bible" to bring the new film's sets to life.

Headshot of Kelly Allen

Welcome, foolish mortals, to a fresh yet familiar tale that'll briefly distract you from Barbenheimer : Disney's new movie Haunted Mansion. The star-studded film —in theaters now—exists separately from the company's 2003 movie The Haunted Mansion . For the latest iteration, production designer Darren Gilford and his team zeroed in on the Disneyland attraction that started it all. They recreated elements from the ride with meticulous detail to bring the spooky-silly saga to life.

The first Haunted Mansion attraction has a long history from its conception as a walkthrough tour in the early 1950s. First opened as a Disneyland ride in Anaheim, California, circa 1969, the home was inspired by the now-demolished Shipley-Lydecker House in Baltimore City, Maryland. Built in 1803, the white brick mansion featured Italianate columns and double wraparound porches with cast iron detailing. (The ride eventually inspired other variations across the world, including the one that was part of Disney World's opening day in Orlando, Florida, circa 1971. The house in the 2003 film looks like a blend of the California and Florida attractions.)

To bring the Greek Revival-style Gracey Manor—the haunted mansion in the title—to the big screen, Gilford and his team did extensive research on the architecture. They closely studied the "Haunted Mansion Bible from Imagineering," the Disney department that designs and builds all of the theme parks and attractions, Gilford tells House Beautiful . A trip to see the attraction was a must. Following a private experience on the ride after hours, the team walked through the attraction with all of the lights on for a true behind-the-scenes look during which they captured photos and took measurements. "We really tried to be as true as we could to the original Haunted Mansion from Disneyland," Gilford says.

The structure's proportions were amplified to make it feel grander than the park attraction for cinematic effect. The first story of the exterior was constructed on a studio backlot in Louisiana along with the front yard, driveway, gates, and backyard. Visual effects made up for the rest of the building. One aspect Gilford wanted to maintain was the feeling of entering the attraction. "When guests are visiting the park and they go through the gates at the Haunted Mansion, there's a very specific angle," Gilford says. "That was really important to me to maintain that iconic composition the guests experience, no matter how young or old you are, when you approach the Haunted Mansion."

Filming also took place in Atlanta at Trilith Studios, where the interior sets were built. Fans of the ride will notice familiar design details in Gracey Manor, such as the golden snake door handle, striped wallpaper pattern, and eerie portraits. One of Gilford's favorite touches is a bat-shaped stanchion modeled after the posts connected by chains that were designed for kids to hold onto as they navigate the Haunted Mansion ride in the dark. In the séance room, an antique balloon chair pays homage to the ride's Doom Buggies. There's no kitchen in the attraction, but the movie called for one. So, the team dreamt one up from scratch with moody black tiles.

The interiors of Crump Manor, owned by the film's villain, were designed in stark contrast to Gracey Manor. Rather than a dark atmosphere, the home boasts a light, almost monochromatic color palette that’s "bone white and marble," Gilford says. "It's very cold and sterile."

Whether you're new to the Haunted Mansion universe or enjoy the Disneyland attraction often, the movie's sets are sure to delight. It's a tribute to the legendary piece of Disney history (and it just might spark your curiosity about haunted houses in general, from the big business of dark tourism to signs your house might be haunted .).

Now streaming on:

From the original ride to now-three of film adaptations, Disney's Haunted Mansion is properly cemented into the company’s spooky canon. This installment is in line behind 2003’s nostalgic Eddie Murphy chapter and 2021’s Muppets edition. Justin Simien (“ Dear White People ,” “Bad Hair") directs this return to a Black-led live-action iteration of the story.

The simple plot lends to simple execution across the board. Single mother Gabbie ( Rosario Dawson ) has moved into the antique house of her dreams with her nine-year-old son Travis ( Chase Dillon ). But not long after stepping into the home, they become blatantly aware of the spirited tenants occupying the creepy abode. Enlisting the help of grieving astrophysicist Ben ( LaKeith Stanfield ), priest Father Kent ( Owen Wilson ), medium Harriet ( Tiffany Haddish ), and haunted house expert Professor Bruce Davis ( Danny DeVito ), the gang hopes to put their heads together to rid the house of its supernatural tormentors.

“Haunted Mansion” is star-studded but shoddy at best. Despite the talent of writer Katie Dippold (“ The Heat ” “Parks and Recreation”), the script’s punchlines are forced and flat. Everyone is doled their share of one-liners, but Wilson and Haddish carry most of the weight. While Wilson often runs dry, Haddish delivers in her classic tone and cadence, executing flimsy jokes to her best ability. The script does toe the line of Disney’s boundaries, tossing in some light innuendos in a somewhat concerted effort to draw in more mature audiences.

Simien's film does display its fun-loving origins in how the house can transform into a surrealist landscape. Halls that never end, ceilings that extend into impossibility, gargoyles, hidden rooms, and the ever-so-classic ghost-inhabited portraits recall nostalgia for the film’s classic Gothicism. “Haunted Mansion” boasts a handful of playful chases and spooky sequences, but they’re fleeting and soon bring us back to the film’s stuttering pace. It's hard to find any true tension in "Haunted Mansion" until the climactic faceoff in the third act.

Perhaps the greatest letdown of Simien's movie is how little the cast delivers. The ensemble is brimming with lively, prolific candidates, yet the script hardly seems to keep this in mind. Their talents are either underused or misdirected. Stanfield’s Ben mourns the loss of his wife, his grief becoming a cornerstone of the story. Yet while we’ve seen Stanfield display emotional depth in other roles, every tearful moment feels like a soap opera, not on account of sentiment, but performance. There’s a sense of watered-down contrivance across the board. The forced, postured will-they won’t-they romance between Stanfield and Dawson showcases this also. And with seasoned comedic actors in Wilson, DeVito, and Haddish, too few of their comedy efforts actually hit.

“Haunted Mansion” is constructed with the familiar bricks of a Gothic tale, down to the theme of grief that runs throughout. There’s a thoughtful examination of how grief makes us vulnerable while also being able to harness the power of that love to connect with one another and appreciate the lives we lead. There’s also value for family audiences in the nostalgic spookiness that rides along the surface. But with a repeated sourness in the film’s comedic efforts and a tragically misused ensemble, “Haunted Mansion” misses the chance to become a Halloween classic.

Haunted Mansion review – Disney theme-park chiller is joyless Halloween merch

Lakeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson and Jamie Lee Curtis cannot save this laborious story of a creepy old dwelling and the awful Hatbox Ghost

T here’s scope for a genuinely disturbing and subversive horror set in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion, the attraction which first opened at the original theme park in Anaheim in California in 1969, with cloned versions appearing at the Magic Kingdom in Florida in 1971 and Tokyo Disneyland in 1983. There’s also scope for a properly funny, amiably creepy Goosebumps-type family comedy based on it. But this tiresome, convoluted piece of corporate IP product isn’t it; like the 2003 film version with Eddie Murphy , it feels cynical – though I must admit I have never seen the Muppets Haunted Mansion special.

This new attempt to cross-monetise the tourist walkthrough is laborious and joyless while the throwaway funny lines, which do exist, only serve in the end to remind you how clunky it really is overall. Writer Katie Dippold has worked on funny movies and TV shows such as Parks and Recreation and Ghostbusters, but this isn’t her A-game.

We begin with an almost unbearably extended, unsatisfying exposition sequence showing top scientist Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield) meeting cute with his future wife, a haunted-house tour guide. Later we see him alone and really depressed and doing the tour-guide job himself; the explanation for this is withheld, but the reveal is anticlimactic. All this is quite apart from introducing us to single mom Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her young son Travis (Chase Dillon), who are moving into a creepy old New Orleans mansion little realising it’s haunted.

When she grasps the horrible ectoplasmic truth, Gabbie brings in various wacky experts: an exorcist priest (Owen Wilson), a medium (Tiffany Haddish), a professor (Danny DeVito) along with Ben himself. They are all destined to be trapped inside the creepy old dwelling, and to face the awful Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) – although he appears to be connected with a quite different house, thus sort of insulating the Haunted Mansion of the title from anything that is supposed to be bad.

Of all these people, it’s Haddish who comes closest to being funny or in any way interesting, although a cameo from Jamie Lee Curtis as an imperious soothsayer trapped inside a crystal ball does get a few laughs. In the end, it’s another piece of Halloween merchandise.

Positive Messages

The specifically stated message is that "Grief can be a doorway to joy, if one's willing to work on it." But it's more likely to be understood as "we can't let grief consume us." Either way, the film supports the expression of loss and grief, which is a positive thing.

Positive Role Models

Characters show compassion and bravery, using teamwork to face terrifying ghouls in an effort to bring peace to the captured souls. Characters are allowed to experience grief in vulnerable ways and find support through those around them, finding connection.

Diverse Representations

Written by female screenwriter Katie Dippold and directed by Justin Simien (who's Black and gay). Diverse cast: Main characters include Black actors LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, and multiracial actor Rosario Dawson (Afro-Latino with Native ancestry), as well as White actors Owen Wilson and Danny DeVito. Centers around romantic and familial love between characters of color and shows Black characters' humanity and vulnerability.

Violence & Scariness

Suggested death via suicide: A character drinks something that would kill him, and his body is shown lying on the floor next to the bottle. Ghouls, ghosts, and skeletons abound -- including some without heads. Jump scares. A "black widow" type of bride repeatedly flings her ax at the characters. A duel, which leads to the duelers' demise. Character hit by a car, but the scene cuts before impact. Lots of peril. Alligator chases and snaps at characters. Supernatural elements like dark magic, seances, the appearance of a Ouija board.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Haunted Mansion is a tween-friendly supernatural comedy that's the second movie inspired by the classic Disney theme park ride (the first was released in 2003 ). The frights are similar to horror-comedy classics like Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice : Spirits have an edge of silliness to them, but a couple (like an ax-wielding bride with demon eyes) are genuinely unsettling. Ghosts swirl through the screen in bulk, and characters -- including a child -- are in constant peril. All of this makes the movie more appropriate for older tweens and teens than younger or more sensitive children. Kids who do want to have the (often powerful) experience of "surviving" watching a scary movie will definitely feel like they're watching a fright fest -- but it's creepy, not screamy, and it's balanced with a sense of humor. Themes do touch on moving on after death and loss (for both the spirits and for living characters who are mourning the loss of a loved one). Adult characters drink throughout, and there are hugs/embraces and references to romance and departed spouses. Moderate scares with a great message about grief and working as a team, what's the story.

In HAUNTED MANSION, single mom Gabbie ( Rosario Dawson ) and her 9-year-old son, Travis (Chase W. Dillon), move into a New Orleans mansion that's filled with long-buried secrets -- and several unpleasant ghosts. Hoping to cleanse the house of the evil within, Gabbie hires a scrappy team of paranormal experts to help.

Is It Any Good?

Satisfactorily spooky and just the right amount of scary for tweens and young teens, director Justin Simien 's film is a true adaptation of the iconic Disney attraction. And in this case, "true" means more accurate than the actual Haunted Mansion ride itself, which was created in 1969 and, although set in New Orleans, didn't feature any people of color. Simien corrects that disconnect by casting Black actors in the primary roles and infusing the movie's backdrop with the sounds, sights, and culture of the Crescent City, from alligators to zydeco.

That said, the ride probably has more twists than this film. The story is pretty routine: There's a problem (a haunted house), we meet the experts who will solve the problem, and then they solve it. The humor level is enough to keep a feeling of lightness, which balances the specters on screen. Many of the characters are mourning the loss of a loved one, and the movie does address this with real heart. As a way to spend a couple of hours as a family, this fright-light comedy is a hauntingly good time. Still, a matinee may be advisable to give kids a few hours of daylight to process everything, in case -- just like in the ride -- an apparition jumps into the backseat of a kid's brain and follows them home.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how Haunted Mansion compares with other haunted house movies. Were the scary moments too scary? How much scary stuff can young kids handle?

Discuss the movie's message. Do you agree that death isn't the end, but the beginning of a new chapter?

What elements of New Orleans culture did you notice? How does the jazz "second line" funeral connect with the film's theme?

Considering how little iffy content is in this movie (other than the scares!), why do you think drinking was included?

Do you believe in ghosts? Why, or why not?

'Haunted Mansion': All the references diehard fans will love in Disney+ movie (Spoilers!)

Spoiler alert! The following story contains major details about "Haunted Mansion."

When Justin Simien was still in film school, he moonlighted as a cast member at Disneyland in California.

Stationed at Grizzly River Run, he’d use his lunch breaks to visit other theme park attractions – including the iconic Haunted Mansion. Roughly two decades later, Simien has brought his favorite ride to the big screen with Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” (now streaming on Disney+), which has more Easter eggs than the White House lawn in spring.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

The new movie brims with references to the ghoulishly giddy attraction, some of which are more obvious than others. Keep your eyes peeled for the watchful marble busts , which lurk in the background as pistol-wielding paintings and floating candelabras spring to life.

Fan-favorite ghosts such as the bride , caretaker and opera singer all materialize, as does Madame Leota ( Jamie Lee Curtis ), who opens the film with a classic line from the ride: “Welcome, foolish mortals.”

“I want folks to know that we really paid attention and made this thing out of love for the ride,” says Simien, whose previous films include “Dear White People” (2014) and “Bad Hair” (2020).

'Haunted Mansion' interview: Jamie Lee Curtis, Tiffany Haddish discuss latest spin on Disney attraction

Here are some of the happy haunts and devilish details that Disney superfans will appreciate:

The 'indelible' Stretching Room figures into the movie's climax

The movie centers on paranormal expert Ben (LaKeith Stanfield), who goes to the mansion to investigate spectral sightings. When he arrives, one of the first things that eagle-eyed viewers will notice is the legendary Stretching Room , which guests are escorted into at the start of the Disney ride. But it’s not until the movie’s third act that the room actually begins to grow, as Ben is forced to find a way out with no windows and no doors.

As in the attraction, the paintings on the wall stretch as the room grows bigger, revealing horrible things such as alligators, quicksand and dynamite. In the film, all those terrors leap off the canvas and become obstacles for Ben’s getaway.

“There’s a few moments on the ride that are indelible – they’re crying out to be set pieces,” Simien says. “Once we knew that the big escape from the mansion was going to be in the Stretching Room, it was then a matter of like, ‘OK, so why is it stretching? And does that help or hurt them in some way?’ "

'Haunted Mansion' review: Don't expect a ton of chills in Disney's safe ghost ride

Tiffany Haddish's chair becomes a Haunted Mansion 'Doom Buggy'

Helping Ben in his ghost hunt is psychic medium Harriet (Tiffany Haddish), who angers the mansion’s evil spirits during a séance. Her chair proceeds to tip back and zoom right out the front door – a clever nod to the ride’s “Doom Buggies,” which carry Disney parkgoers through the attraction.

Shooting the chair sequence with Haddish, “it wasn’t just her in a blue-screen set – there was really a track underneath, almost like an actual roller coaster ride that would rotate and move her,” Simien says. “I was like, ‘This is the most awesome thing I’ve ever done.’ It was so mechanical and practical.”

Jared Leto's fan favorite Hatbox Ghost finally gets his due

The attraction’s famous Hitchhiking Ghosts are smartly incorporated into the film: They travel home with Ben and his companions and proceed to haunt their nightmares. A lesser-known but equally beloved ghoul is the Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto), the movie’s main villain and a figure in Disneyland lore. The character was part of the original Haunted Mansion in 1969 but was removed from the attraction because of a glitch in technology. The Hatbox Ghost lived on in Disney merchandise and marketing, though, and was restored to the Disneyland ride in 2015, thanks to fan demand.

“Fans became obsessed with him and even gave him that moniker before it was officially adopted by the ride,” Simien says. “To hang our hat on this character that the fans love just felt right. And the guy's in a cape and cowl and a top hat ‒ it was a no-brainer, really."

Winona Ryder makes a genius cameo as a snarky tour guide

Late in the film, Ben visits another eerie estate called Crump Manor (a nod to Rolly Crump , a Disney Imagineer who helped design the original Haunted Mansion). There, he encounters Pat (Winona Ryder), a sinister tour guide with a deadpan delivery.

“She’s quite a queen of the horror-fantasy comedy,” Simien says. “She thankfully, said yes to us, and was just remarkable to work with and so effortlessly funny."

'Grim Grinning Ghosts' is rooted in New Orleans music

The movie ends with a swinging party in the mansion’s familiar ballroom, showcasing an updated version of the attraction’s theme song, “Grim Grinning Ghosts.” Composed by Kris Bowers, the “spooky jazz” arrangement is rooted in the culture of New Orleans, where the film is set.

“New Orleans is a Black city, baby. It's where we get jazz," Simien says. Like the ride itself, the movie's tone "is this mix of fear and comedy and tragedy, and all these things that normally shouldn't go together. That's jazz, and that's New Orleans."

Haunted Mansion (2023 movie)

Picking up the floating candelabra for Disney 's big-budget reboot, director Justin Simien 's new Haunted Mansion cast lead the spirited film through a family horror tale packed with spirited references to the beloved Disneyland ride upon which writer Katie Dippold's story is based.

Led by LaKeith Stanfield , Rosario Dawson , Tiffany Haddish , Owen Wilson , Danny DeVito , Chase W. Dillon, Hasan Minhaj , Jared Leto , Winona Ryder , Dan Levy , and Jamie Lee Curtis , the Haunted Mansion cast consists of Oscar- and blockbuster-verified talent who make prime additions to the 999 happy haunts inhabiting Gracey Manor. Before the film hits theaters Friday, read on for a full breakdown of the new characters the cast portray, as well as classic Haunted Mansion staples from the ride, as conjured up by the new movie.

LaKeith Stanfield as Ben

Haunted Mansion

It's not all happy haunts and moody, grim, grinning ghosts nestled within the walls of Haunted Mansion . The story of Stanfield's Ben, a New Orleans-based inventor and paranormal tour guide, packs the film with an emotional core that will move you to tears by the time the credits roll. Before Gabbie pulls him out of his mundane existence by hiring him to vanquish pesky ghouls invading her home, we learn that Ben's connection to the afterlife is rooted in the death of his beloved wife, with whom he attempts to connect by making a special camera lens that can capture ghostly images. Along the way, the grieving Ben reluctantly forges a bond with Gabbie and her son, Travis (Chase W. Dillon), that opens new spiritual pathways he never saw coming, even with the help of his camera that can "see the unseen," as he says.

Rosario Dawson as Gabbie

Haunted Mansion

As a lover of vintage finds, classic architecture, and vanilla-scented candles (a recurring, laugh-out-loud gag throughout the film), Dawson's Gabbie moves herself and her young son into the film's focal home. She almost immediately regrets the decision after a suit of armor comes to life before her very eyes. The Ahsoka actress' quest to rid the haunted, humble abode of infesting ghosts leads her to hire Stanfield's Ben for $10,000 Their journey together ultimately brings them closer to the spirits inside Gracey Manor, but also intertwines the duo's souls in unexpected ways.

Tiffany Haddish as Harriet

Haunted Mansion

One of the most delightful new additions to the Haunted Mansion lore, Haddish's New Orleans psychic Harriet is — as the Emmy-winning Girls Trip and Afterparty star previously told EW — a melting pot of inspiration, from Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost to Miss Cleo . Harriet joins Ben's eclectic army of supernatural sleuths, with Haddish giving arguably the most consistently hilarious performance in the movie. She helps hold the ragtag batch together by bridging the gap between the living and the dead through seances and astral projection. She also forms a close bond with her idol, the historic and legendary Madame Leota, that comes to a satisfying (crystal ball-bound) head during the film's climax.

Owen Wilson as Father Kent

Haunted Mansion

The Oscar nominee provides comedic relief and a shoulder for Ben to lean on throughout the movie, as a determined (yet ill-equipped, let's just say that) paranormal "expert" who helps rid Gracey Manor of its haunting spirits. By the end of the film, audiences will see this role from the Wedding Crashers actor in a new light, after he sets in motion a tectonic shift that aides Ben's quest in monumental — and visually amusing — ways.

Danny DeVito as Professor Bruce Davis

Haunted Mansion

Ben's team eventually enlists the help of Professor Bruce Davis, a wise-cracking academic played by comedic legend Danny DeVito. The Academy Award-nominated Matilda and Batman Returns performer has some of the film's funniest lines, offering up much-needed levity amid the more frightening scenes. As one of the trailers previously suggested, he even grapples with ghostly possession in a particularly harrowing sequence.

Jared Leto as Hatbox Ghost

Jared Leto attends the 11th Annual LACMA Art+Film Gala; Haunted Mansion | Official Trailer

After sinking his teeth into Morbius and an Italian meatball in House of Gucci , the Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club actor continues his string of transformative roles as the Hatbox Ghost, a fan-favorite character who appears in the Disneyland version of the ride and as the primary villain of the new Haunted Mansion movie. Outside of simply sending his head down from his neck and into the box in his hand (just like he does on the attraction), there's far more to Leto's menacing take on the iconic figure, who serves as Gracey Manor's most terrifying haunt — and ultimately occupies pivotal space in the Haunted Mansion narrative.

Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota

Haunted Mansion

Perhaps the most recognizable figure from the Haunted Mansion rides, Madame Leota had big shoes — or, well, a big crystal orb — to fill in Simien's big-screen adaptation. Curtis, a horror icon and recent Oscar-winning actress , fit the ball perfectly, playing an aesthetically similar version of the fan-favorite medium who greets riders amid a seance halfway through the Disney attraction. However, the Halloween star's role is more than just a passing set piece in the film; Leota assists Ben and the gang by providing essential information on their quest to foil the Hatbox Ghost's nefarious plot.

Hasan Minhaj as a police sketch artist

Haunted Mansion

The comedian and former Daily Show performer has a brief cameo as an unnamed sketch artist working for the New Orleans Police Department, who draws a scarily (and hilariously) accurate portrait of the Hatbox Ghost after listening to a description from Ben and Bruce.

Dan Levy and Winona Ryder as Crump Manor tour guides

Haunted Mansion

Both Levy and Ryder appear for mere moments in Haunted Mansion , but they have some of the most amusing dialogue of the entire film. Ryder plays Pat, a snarky tour guide who assists Ben, Father Kent, and Travis with their upcoming stay inside Crump Manor — a similarly haunted abode that seemingly holds the key to resolving Gracey Manor's paranormal predicament. But first, the Schitt's Creek star's character — also a tour guide — serenades the group with his brief rendition of the beloved Disney tune "It's a Small World" on the piano.

Chase W. Dillon as Travis

Haunted Mansion

Dillon plays Travis, Gabbie's young son who plays a vital role in the fight against the Hatbox Ghost's army of vengeful spirits. The 13-year-old Harder They Fall and Underground Railroad actor is a revelation in the role, keeping up with comedy heavyweights like DeVito and Haddish, thanks to sharp wit and comedic timing indicative of a star in the making.

Walt Disney Studios released a trailer for Haunted Mansion on their official YouTube channel on May 16, 2023. The video currently sits at around 1.5 million views and begins with the paranormal investigator Ben arriving at Gabbie and Travis' mansion. Before he crosses the threshold, Gabbie warns Ben that entering the house in question could change the course of his entire life. Ben assures Gabbie that he isn't afraid of a couple of ghosts - however, he quickly realizes he may have spoken too soon. Throughout the trailer, we see brief clips of some of the ghosts adapted from The Haunted Mansion ride attraction; the axe-murdering bride, the Hatbox Ghost, and Madame Leota. The final scene of the trailer shows Danny DeVito as Bruce and LaKeith Stanfield as Ben at their comedic best as they describe a "mugging" by one of the ghosts to a perplexed detective. It's clear to see that as well as bringing the scares, Haunted Mansion is set to be laugh-out-loud funny.

Haunted Mansion is a big-screen adaptation of the ride attraction The Haunted Mansion, which has locations in Disneyland in California, Magic Kingdom in Florida, and Tokyo Disneyland. Although experiences differ depending on location, the premise is the same: guests must make their way through the spooky mansion which is haunted by a group of undead beings. Additionally, 2023's Haunted Mansion movie adaptation is not the first of its kind. Directed by Rob Minkoff , the first adaptation titled The Haunted Mansion was released in 2003, and stars actors Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Tilly .

The Haunted Mansion (2003) - Differing from the premise of the upcoming 2023 adaptation, The Haunted Mansion follows husband and wife Jim (Eddie Murphy) and Sara Evers ( Marsha Thomason ) and their two children. When workaholic Jim misses an important anniversary, he attempts to make amends by taking his family on a vacation. Soon, Jim and Sara find what they believe to be the perfect vacation spot: Gracey Manor, located at a nearby lake. Together, the family travels to the manor to scope it out and meet the owner ( Nathaniel Parker ), but when a rainstorm leaves them unable to travel home, the Evers experience a night they'll never forget.

Hocus Pocus (1993) - Set in Salem, Massachusetts, Hocus Pocus begins on Halloween night in 1693, with Thackery Binx ( Sean Murray ) witnessing the kidnapping of his younger sister. The three witches responsible for the kidnapping, Winifred ( Bette Midler ), Sarah ( Sarah Jessica Parker ), and Mary Sanderson ( Kathy Najimy ), transform Thackery into an immortal black cat, cursing him to live with an eternity of grief and guilt. Three hundred years later, on Halloween night 1993, teenager Max Dennison ( Omri Katz ) and his sister Dani ( Thora Birch ) meet up with Max's crush Allison ( Vinessa Shaw ) whilst out trick or treating. The three decide to visit the legendary Sanderson sisters' former cottage, where Max accidentally resurrects the witches, and sets them loose upon the people of Salem. A sequel to Hocus Pocus was released on Disney+ last fall.

Screen Rant

The product placement in disney’s haunted mansion went way too far.

Product placement is quite common in the film industry, but Disney's Haunted Mansion went about it in a way that felt very distracting for viewers.

  • The 2023 Haunted Mansion movie's excessive product placement distracted from the storyline and received negative reviews.
  • The cast was unable to promote the film due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, contributing to its underperformance at the box office.
  • The excessive product placements may have been an attempt to recoup the film's high budget and appeal to a younger audience, but ultimately, Disney's strategy backfired.

Disney is not a studio to shy away from product placement, but their approach to the idea in Haunted Mansion was very bad. Released in 2023, Haunted Mansion had all the makings of a successful Disney film. It boasted a big budget and an all-star cast, and it was based on a beloved ride from Disney's theme parks. It also was kind of a remake of the 2003 film of almost the same name, which already had its own large fan base. Unfortunately, things didn't play out as the studio might have hoped.

With the movie being released during the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Haunted Mansion cast was not able to promote it on their own platforms. This was part of what led to the amusement ride adaptation not performing as well as other Disney films at the box office. Haunted Mansion also didn't receive rave reviews, partly because of the way the film chose to include product placements. The strategy seemed to simply be " as many as possible ," regardless of whether they made sense or whether they distracted from the actual storyline.

Haunted Mansion Remake's Product Placement Is Distractingly Excessive

While product placement is certainly not a novel concept in the film industry, Haunted Mansion seemed to take it to the next level. Movies tend to find organic ways to integrate product placement into the story and limit how many they include, but Haunted Mansion did the opposite. The call-outs to different products and brands felt excessive and completely out of place. They included shills for Zillow, CVS, Baskin-Robbins, Yankee Candle, Zatarain's seasoning, and Fujifilm. In addition to these brands, the movie made sure to shout out their own properties as well. There was clear Black Panther and Marvel Comics product placement seen throughout the film.

There is nothing wrong with Disney wanting to include product placement in Haunted Mansion , but it started to become distracting and almost comical at a point, feeling like a scavenger hunt of how many brand names audiences could pick up on. The studio should have looked at another one of their movies. Toy Story features a lot of product placement, but it's all integrated so well that it doesn't feel like a nuisance to the audience. Because the products were mainly toys, they felt natural to the storyline. Had Haunted Mansion been more selective with its product placement, it could have had a similar result.

Why Haunted Mansion Has So Much Product Placement

With so much product placement in Haunted Mansion , it's only natural to wonder why this happened in the first place. While there is no clear answer, the most likely reason was due to them trying to recuperate some of the movie's costs. Haunted Mansion had a massive budget of more than $150 million. The studio may have been worried after the film did not generate much buzz and wanted to make sure that there was at least some return on their investment if the box office numbers weren't up to par — which ended up happening.

Related: 10 Reasons Haunted Mansion Bombed At The Box Office - Breaking Down Disney's $150 Million Failure

When it comes to their excessive advertising of in-house brands and products, that could have been done because they were expecting more children to see Haunted Mansion . Seeing things like a Black Panther action figure or Marvel Monopoly in the film could have made these viewers want these products. All in all, Disney's strategy seems to have failed, as audiences can't help but point out how annoying the excessive product placements feel.

Disney's Haunted Mansion - Everything You Need To Know

Haunted Mansion cast together

The House of Mouse loves making movies based on popular rides at Disney World and Disneyland. Sometimes, these adaptations are huge hits, a la "Pirates of the Caribbean," and sometimes they're major disappointments, like "Tomorrowland." Sometimes they're an absolute blast, a la "Jungle Cruise," and sometimes they're absolutely baffling, such as "The Country Bears."

And then there's "Haunted Mansion," based on the beloved Disneyland dark ride. While the film grossed $182 million worldwide, its budget was a reasonably high $90 million, and the film was panned by critics and audiences alike. However, there's something especially cinematic about that particular attraction, so it makes sense that Disney would want to give the ride another go-round.

Just like a ghost rising from the grave, "Haunted Mansion" has returned to terrify audiences. The upcoming film looks like it could be quite fun, and if you want to know more about the A-list cast, who's directing, and what this spooky tale has in store, read on for what we know so far about the new "Haunted Mansion" movie.

When will Haunted Mansion be released?

Disney's "Haunted Mansion" is set to scare audiences on July 28, 2023. However, that wasn't always the case. That release date has been a bit of a cursed one for Disney. Originally, it was supposed to be the premiere for "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." However, "The Marvels" — which was originally set to be released in February — needed more time to complete, so the two superhero movies swapped places.

Then, "The Marvels" was pushed back from its July release date to November, reportedly because it needed more post-production work. With that July 28 slot empty, the House of Mouse decided to bump up "Haunted Mansion" from its original release date of August 11. While we personally think a fall release date would've been a bit more appropriate, given it's spooky season, Disney evidently thinks "Haunted Mansion" has blockbuster potential.

For their sake, we hope they're right. "Haunted Mansion" will be competing against some stiff competition. Both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" will be in their second week of release when "Haunted Mansion" comes out, and "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One" hits theaters that month as well. We'll see if "Haunted Mansion" can spook the competition.

What is the plot of Haunted Mansion?

"Haunted Mansion" kicks off with Gabbie, a single mother who's just purchased a creepy-looking house in New Orleans. Excited about what the future holds, she moves into the mansion with her 9-year-old son, who's not quite as excited about being in the uber-spooky house. Turns out, the kid is right — the place is crawling with ghosts, and these aren't exactly your friendly Casper types. Realizing they're in way over their heads, Gabbie recruits a group of unlikely heroes — a priest, a psychic, a historian, and paranormal expert — to get rid of the evil spirits occupying the manor. Of course, that's going to be easier said than done, resulting in both horror and hilarity.

Who is starring in Haunted Mansion?

Just like the titular haunted mansion is full of specters, the "Haunted Mansion" movie is full of stars. Rosario Dawson plays Gabbie, the single mom who must protect her son and exorcise her new New Orleans home. Dawson is no stranger to the Disney family, as she's also playing Ahsoka Tano in Disney+'s "Ahsoka" series. She's also starred in projects like "Daredevil," "The 25th Hour," and "Sin City."

Her young son, who seems to know from early on that something isn't right with this house, will be played by Chase Dillon. A young star on the rise, Dillon is probably best known for his chilling turn as Homer in "The Underground Railroad." Here, he stars along some serious talent with LaKeith Stanfield ("Atlanta") as a sketchy paranormal expert, Owen Wilson ("Loki") as an eager priest, Tiffany Haddish ("The Afterparty") as a psychic, and Danny DeVito ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia") as a historian.

Of course, they aren't the only names in this stacked cast. Jamie Lee Curtis, fresh off her Oscar win for "Everything Everywhere All at Once," also appears in the film, as does Jared Leto of "Morbius," who will appear as the ghastly Hatbox Ghost. They'll be joined by Winona Ryder of "Stranger Things," Dan Levy of "Schitt's Creek," and Hasan Minhaj of "Patriot Act."

Who is directing Haunted Mansion?

Before he became an acclaimed director, Justin Simien used to work at Disneyland. "It was the best summer job I ever had," he told audiences at D23 in September 2022. "And anytime I wasn't working on the ride I was supposed to, I'd ride Pirates and my favorite ride, Haunted Mansion." Clearly, the attraction holds a special place in Simien's heart, which makes him the perfect choice to helm the upcoming family horror flick.

While Simien doesn't have a ton of previous credit, the stuff he has worked on has impressed many a critic. He burst onto the scene with 2014's feature-length "Dear White People," a savage satire that he adapted into a celebrated Netflix series. He also directed the horror comedy "Bad Hair," and now he's bringing those sensibilities over to Disney. We can't wait to see what Simien has in store, and judging by the trailers, it looks like it's going to be a blast.

Who is writing Haunted Mansion?

Screenwriter Katie Dippold has quite a bit of experience blending gags with ghosts. In addition to penning the script for "Haunted Mansion," she also wrote the screenplay for 2016's "Ghostbusters." Dippold is definitely known best for her comedy cred, as she also wrote "The Heat," which starred Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, as well as several episodes of "Parks and Recreation," including classics like "Indianapolis," "Beauty Pageant," "Summer Catalog," and "April and Andy's Fancy Party."

Director Justin Simien seems quite impressed by Dippold's work. Speaking at D23 in September 2022, the director said, "For me, there was something about that ride I felt was there in the script. It was funny and full of interesting characters but with a dark edge to it."

Is there a trailer for Haunted Mansion?

The official trailer for "Haunted Mansion" opens with LaKeith Stanfield's paranormal expert showing up at the scene of the titular haunted house. "Wait!" Rosario Dawson's Gabbie shouts before he can come through the door. "I should warn you before you step inside the house, this could change the course of your entire life." "I'm not afraid of a couple of ghosts," he says defiantly, to which Dawson laughs, "You say that now..."

It's a decision the ghost hunter will come to regret, as a ghostly specter hurls an ax at his head basically the moment he starts poking around. From there, we watch as the dream team assembles, with Owen Wilson's priest, Danny DeVito's historian, and Tiffany Haddish's medium showing up on the scene. They're greeted by pistol-dueling spirits, twisting hallways, the terrifying Hatbox Ghost, and the head of Jamie Lee Curtis.

The stakes are incredibly high — if our heroes fail, they'll be stuck in the house for eternity — and this motley crew are in for the fight of their lives. Of course, while the trailer is definitely spooky, it also looks like a rollicking good time that pays the proper tribute to the beloved ride.

What is Disney's Haunted Mansion rated?

Sure, it's a Disney film, but "Haunted Mansion" is going to be a bit spookier than your typical offering from the House of Mouse. As a result, the rating reflects that. This ghost story is rated PG-13 for "some thematic elements and scary action." It's not unheard of for Disney films to receive this rating, especially their live-action fare. Think of titles like the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies or "Jungle Cruise," and those were all PG-13 pictures, perfect for most members of the family. In other words, while this movie isn't meant for the littlest ones, it's going to be totally fine for most kids.

Haunted Mansion: release date, trailer, cast, plot and everything we know about the movie

Inspired by the famous ride at Disney amusement parks.

Danny DeVito, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson and LaKeith Stanfield in Haunted Mansion

It looks like Walt Disney is going to have quite the year in theaters with a number of high-profile releases including Haunted Mansion . The movie joins the ranks of The Little Mermaid , Elemental and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny , as much-talked-about new movies of 2023 .

Now what makes Haunted Mansion stand out from its counterparts this summer, is the movie draws its plot inspiration from a ride at the famous Disney amusement parks.

In What to Watch's review , we called it "an effective, spooky nostalgia trip for Disney lovers".

So what else should you know about the movie ahead of its release? Here's everything we know about Haunted Mansion .

Haunted Mansion release date

Haunted Mansion premieres in the US exclusively in theaters on Friday, July 28.

UK would-be viewers will have to wait a little longer, as the film doesn't premiere in cinemas in the country until Friday, August 11.

Haunted Mansion trailer

On May 16, Walt Disney Studios released the official trailer for the film. We have to say, the video clip leads us to believe the movie may be as thrilling as the actual ride.

Check out the Haunted Mansion teaser trailer posted on March 2 featuring some big names in Hollywood.

Haunted Mansion plot

Here is the official brief synopsis of Haunted Mansion :

"Inspired by the classic theme park attraction, Haunted Mansion is about a woman (Rosario Dawson) and her son (Chase Dillon) who enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters."

Now for those who aren't as familiar, the Haunted Mansion ride first opened at Disneyland in 1969, and since then has popped up at four other Disney properties. The park attraction takes riders on Doom Buggies through a haunted New Orleans-inspired mansion, as special effects provide thrills and pure amusement. Take a look at the video of the ride below.

Haunted Mansion cast

Haunted Mansion is truly comprised of an all-star cast. At the heart of the movie as the mother named Gabbie is Rosario Dawson. Dawson has starred in a number of projects over the years, including Rent , Dopesick , Daredevil and Luke Cage . More recently, she was spotted in DMZ and Clerks III .

Starring alongside Dawson in Haunted Mansion is Oscar-nominated actress Jamie Lee Curtis. Throughout the decades, Curtis has been seen in some classic films including Trading Place , True Lies and the Halloween movie franchise. She recently has received much critical acclaim for her role as Deirdre in Everything Everywhere All at Once .

Rounding out the esteemed cast are the following:

  • LaKeith Stanfield ( Atlanta )
  • Tiffany Haddish ( Girls Trip )
  • Owen Wilson ( Loki )
  • Danny DeVito ( It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia )
  • Chase W. Dillon ( The Harder They Fall )
  • Dan Levy ( Schitt's Creek )
  •  Jared Leto ( Morbius )

Haunted Mansion director

Justin Simien is behind the lens of Haunted Mansion . This is certainly not Simien's first foray behind the camera, as he's directed Bad Hair , Dear White People the movie and Dear White People the Netflix series. Just to note, as it pertains to the latter three projects, he is also credited as a writer.

Saw X

"Saw X" is a new horror movie in the Jigsaw franchise. (Video still)

A Central New York drive-in movie theater is offering a different kind of double feature this Halloween season.

The Fingerlakes Drive-In and the Fright Night Mansion at Fingerlakes Mall are teaming for a special deal: One $15 ticket gets you a combo admission to both the drive-in and haunted house. Tickets can be purchased at either location and then used at the next location; both are less than 3 miles apart on Clark Street Road in Auburn, N.Y.

The special deal will be offered this weekend, Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14, for screenings of “Saw X” and “The Nun II” at Finger Lakes Drive-In. The deal will also be available Oct. 27-28 for a double picture show of “The Exorcist: Believer” (a new sequel to the 1973 classic “The Exorcist”) and “Saw X.”

Profits from both weekends will go to local charities. The Fingerlakes Drive-In will donate to Chapel House of Cayuga County, a homeless shelter in Auburn, and the Fright Night Mansion is donating to SPCA Hugs from Cara , a nonprofit that helps grieving children and families.

The Fingerlakes Drive-In, New York state’s oldest open-air theater and ranked one of the best in the entire Northeast , is located at 1064 Clark Street Road, Aurelius, N.Y. For more information, visit fingerlakesdrivein.com or Facebook .

Fright Night Mansion, a haunted house presented by A.P.E. Productions, is open every Friday and Saturday night from 6-9:30 p.m. at the Fingerlakes Mall (located at 1579 Clark Street Rd, Auburn). Less scary kiddie matinees are also available Saturdays from 1-3 p.m. For more info, visit ape-sc.com or facebook.com/APEScareandCareInc .
