GhostBed Mattress Guide
Ghostbed classic mattress overview, mattresses available from ghostbed.
GhostBed officially launched its first mattress-in-a-box model in 2015 in an effort to offer more convenience to customers looking to avoid mattress showrooms. Since then, the company has expanded to offer several mattress models, like its RV-sized model and the cooling GhostBed Luxe Mattress. Along with mattresses, GhostBed also sells bedding, bed frames and bases, and pillows in a variety of materials like faux down and memory foam.
As part of its environmental efforts, GhostBed uses vacuum-sealed packaging for its mattresses and pillows. The company says this packaging cuts down on both cardboard and emissions from delivery trucks. Because products are compressed, more of them can fit into a single freight truck, so fewer trucks are required for shipping. GhostBed products are also CertiPUR-US certified, which means they’re manufactured without harsh chemicals to prevent off-gassing of harmful emissions.

GhostBed’s main model is the GhostBed Classic, which is made from non-allergenic latex and memory foam. GhostBed adds cooling gel to the memory foam along with perforations in the latex layer to allow for airflow and heat transfer, which might appeal to hot sleepers. The GhostBed provides a medium-firm feel that could be suitable for side , back, and stomach sleepers .
The GhostBed Classic costs about $1,400 for a queen-size mattress. Its price is below average compared to other all-foam competitors. In our analysis of 340 mattresses, the average price of a foam model came out to $2,058 for a queen size.
GhostBed ranks the Classic at a 6.5 on the firmness scale, giving it a medium-firm feel. It contains latex , which is known for being supportive and springy, as well as memory foam, a material that excels at reducing motion transfer. This balance could appeal to a range of sleeper types.
The GhostBed Classic is 11 inches high and has three layers. On the bottom is the 7.5-inch foam core, which serves as the foundation for the mattress. On top of that is a 2-inch layer of gel memory foam, followed by 1.5 inches of latex, topped with a plush cover.
Motion Transfer
Mattresses that provide motion isolation help prevent you from being bothered or awoken by the movements of the sleeper next to you. The layer of latex provides bounce, while the slower-moving memory foam layer helps absorb movement. GhostBed states its construction minimizes motion transfer, but it is possible you could feel your partner moving around.
Edge Support
Unlike the hybrid GhostBed Flex and GhostBed 3D Matrix, the all-foam Classic mattress doesn’t have any coils for increased edge support. Though this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to roll off the bed, the edges of the Classic may not feel as sturdy as hybrid or innerspring mattresses.
Temperature
The GhostBed Classic contains layers of memory foam and latex, both of which are constructed with cooling features . Though memory foam is known for trapping heat, GhostBed infuses this layer with gel to transfer heat away from the body. Meanwhile, the latex layer is perforated for more airflow and cooler sleeping.
Pressure Relief
The GhostBed Classic contains latex and memory foam for softness and pressure-relieving abilities. Those who experience pressure build-up and stiffness in the shoulders and hips might benefit from these materials. At the same time, the mattress’s thickest layer of high-density foam is designed to be firm enough to support your spine. GhostBed says this balance is a good fit for back, stomach, and side sleepers.

How Much Does the GhostBed Mattress Cost?
The GhostBed Classic Mattress costs around $1,400 at full price for a queen. Based on our analysis of more than 300 mattresses, the average price for a hybrid mattress is $1,868, and the average price for a foam mattress is $2,058. GhostBed may offer special promotions – for example, free pillows with the purchase of a mattress – which can increase the overall value of your mattress.
What Is the GhostBed Mattress Made Of?
Measuring 11 inches thick, the GhostBed is built with three layers of foam. It’s different from most all-foam models because its top layer is made from latex foam, a ventilated material that adds responsiveness to the mattress. Underneath, a layer of memory foam offers sleepers deep contouring support. Since traditional foam is known for trapping heat, this proprietary material is infused with gel and has larger cells to dissipate heat. At its base, the GhostBed’s 7.5-inch support layer of high-density polyfoam contributes to the mattress’ durability.
Additionally, it has a plush cover that’s made from a blend of viscose and polyester to promote cooling.

In addition to its flagship GhostBed, the company also offers models with enhanced features like cooling and edge support. These include the all-foam GhostBed Luxe as well as the hybrid GhostBed Flex and GhostBed 3D Matrix. GhostBed mattresses can be purchased directly from the company online or from select brick-and-mortar retailers.
The GhostBed
Available mattress sizes:
California king
The GhostBed is 11 inches thick. This medium-firm mattress is constructed from three layers of foam. A polyester-blend cover envelops a top comfort layer, a 1.5-inch aerated latex foam layer that helps pull heat away from the body. A second layer of proprietary gel memory foam has large cells to improve air circulation. A high-density foam core helps properly align the spine.
GhostBed Flex
The GhostBed Flex is a hybrid mattress that is 13 inches thick and considered to have a medium firmness level. The main differentiator between this and the original GhostBed mattress is the support core of pocketed coils. The Flex also features two layers of gel memory foam for pressure relief, as well as a layer of Ghost Bounce foam designed to emulate the responsiveness of latex. By adding support coils, the mattress is said to provide some of the bounce-back feel found in innerspring mattresses .
GhostBed Luxe
The GhostBed Luxe is an all-foam mattress that’s 13 inches thick. Its cooling fabric, breathable fibers, and gel memory foam are designed to prevent body heat from getting trapped, thereby addressing a common complaint that foam mattresses are too hot. Its five layers of foam also include a 7.5-inch high-density foam core. It rates between a 5 and a 6 on a firmness scale, with a medium-soft feel, according to GhostBed.
GhostBed 3D Matrix
The GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress is a 12-inch-thick hybrid mattress. The company says this mattress is softer than the original GhostBed, rating it a 4-5 for firmness. The 3D Matrix mattress features a cover designed to feel cool to the touch. The second layer, which GhostBed calls 3D matrix polymer, consists of a gel that also helps you stay cool at night. Additional layers include 2 inches of gel memory foam, a latex-like layer that promotes airflow, a layer of transition foam for added pressure relief, a set of individually wrapped support coils, and a high-density layer of foam for the base.
GhostBed Natural
The GhostBed Natural is a hybrid mattress made of natural or organic materials like cotton, wool, and latex, with a layer of coils for support. The latex and cotton used in the mattress are certified organic by the Global Organic Latex Standard and Global Organic Textile Standard, respectively. GhostBed describes the Natural as a 5.5 to a 6.5 on the firmness scale, providing a medium firmness potentially suitable for back, stomach, and side sleepers.
Venus Williams Legend Available mattress sizes:
The Venus Williams Legend mattress can come in an all-foam version with a medium feel or a hybrid version with a medium-soft feel. The Legend’s standout feature is its 2-inch-thick layer of mineral-infused gel memory foam – called the Venus FIT Layer – which is meant to improve blood flow and muscle recovery. The Legend mattress is geared toward those who live very active lifestyles, looking for deep, rejuvenating sleep.
GhostBed FAQ
GhostBed sells both foam and hybrid mattresses, each with its own unique construction, including the GhostBed Classic, the GhostBed Luxe, GhostBed Flex, and GhostBed 3D Matrix. Prices vary depending on the mattress and range from about $1,400 for a queen-size Classic to about $8,000 for an upgraded version of a queen-size 3D Matrix.
GhostBed also offers an RV-sized mattress, a luxury mattress containing eco-friendly materials called the GhostBed Natural, and an athlete-oriented mattress called the Legend, created in collaboration with Venus Williams. All GhostBed mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified and made in the U.S.
GhostBed mattresses can be purchased online directly from the manufacturer or in person at select retailers. When you purchase online, GhostBed offers white glove delivery as an add-on during checkout. Within one to two weeks of placing your order, a white glove delivery team will arrive at your home to unbox and set up your new mattress and remove your old one. The fee for white glove delivery is a flat rate of $279 and is non-refundable.
GhostBed Warranty: 20- or 25-year warranty
Nature's Sleep, maker of GhostBed mattresses, provides a 20-year warranty for the original GhostBed that covers defects. That includes lasting indentations that are deeper than 1 inch and not due to poor mattress support. It also covers cracking or splitting of the foam and latex.
For the first 10 years of the warranty, GhostBed will either repair or replace the mattress, not including handling and transportation. Starting in year 11, the company can choose to either repair the mattress for a handling fee or replace it at a prorated charge plus the cost of transportation. The prorated charge is 50% of the purchase price in year 11 and for every following year the prorated charge increases by 5%. Nature's Sleep covers the outer mattress cover for one year after purchase.
The GhostBed Luxe, GhostBed Flex, and GhostBed 3D Matrix mattresses have 25-year warranties with similar stipulations.
GhostBed Trial Period: 101-night sleep trial
GhostBed wants you to give the mattress a chance for at least 30 days, so it does not accept returns before this time. If you still don't want to keep the mattress, contact GhostBed directly on its website. Once you request a return, the company will follow up within three to four days. There's no need to roll the mattress back up or repackage it, as a team will come to your house to pick up the mattress.
You have up to 101 days to try the mattress, and after that point it is nonreturnable. This sleep trial is only valid if you purchase your new mattress directly from GhostBed. If you use Groupon or a voucher to buy a GhostBed mattress, sales are final and there is no sleep trial. And if you purchased a GhostBed through Amazon, Amazon's return policies and timelines are in place instead, which typically include a 30-day return window. Note GhostBed accepts one mattress return per household.
GhostBed says its mattresses expand as soon as you open them. However, many mattresses that ship compressed in a box can take several hours or even a day to reach their full dimensions. This is especially true for memory foam, bed-in-a-box mattresses.
GhostBed notes that you shouldn't leave a mattress in the original box for more than six months to make sure that it will decompress properly.
Many foam products that are compressed for shipping have a smell when opened. You may notice this “new mattress” smell with GhostBed mattresses, but it’s not harmful. The foams used in GhostBed mattresses are CertiPUR-US-certified to be low in volatile organic compounds so they won’t off-gas dangerous compounds.
GhostBed mattresses require a solid foundation or slatted bed base that will prevent sagging. You can use a traditional box spring or a box foundation. GhostBed’s box foundation looks like a traditional box spring, but it instead has a metal frame and slats, and it comes with a slip-on cloth cover.

GhostBed Luxe mattress review 2023
The ghostbed luxe is called the 'coolest bed in the world' – can it deliver.

Tom's Guide Verdict
The GhostBed Luxe is the perfect choice for those who want to stay cool throughout the night and not awake when their partner moves. We found the medium-plush firmness provided ample support for side sleepers in particular (although, unusually, it does change firmness with temperature). If only it didn’t have an off-gassing smell.
Superb motion isolation
Excellent cooling technology
Great choice for side sleepers
No customization options
Off-gassing smell that lingers
Too soft for back sleepers
Firmness affected by bedroom temperature

GhostBed Luxe mattress review in brief
- Medium-plush bed with incredible motion isolation and edge support
- Exceptional temperature regulation that lasts all night
- Noticeable off-gassing smell
GhostBed rates this mattress between a five and a six on a 10-point firmness scale, but in our opinion, it’s closer to six. The top cover is quite plush, creating a cloud-like sleep experience. While the base is fairly supportive, it’s softer than firm when it comes to supporting the hips, which means it's probably not going to be the best mattress for you if you tend to lie on your front or back. It is, however, one of the best mattresses for side sleepers .
Best for: hot sleepers and side sleepers Type: mattress in a box Firmness: medium-plush, 6 out of 10 Materials: gel memory foam, continuous aerated latex foam, cooling fiber, high-density foam core Depth: 13 inches Weight: 76-150 lb Sizes: Twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, Cal king, Split king
Where the GhostBed Luxe stands out is in motion isolation, edge support, and cooling technology. Through multiple tests, we found that movement of a partner is almost imperceptible and that the sides of the mattress hold up well when getting dressed or in and out of bed. The shining star is the cooling technology that not only makes the top cover cool to the touch but absorbs heat throughout the night and away from the body (we also rate this amongst the best cooling mattresses around).
For the price, we were surprised that the mattress wasn’t made of more sustainable materials and that it had a strong and lingering off-gassing smell. If we had to guess, the regular price is probably reflective of GhostBed's patented cooling technology which is outstanding among mattresses. However, there are very regular GhostBed mattress sales that take the price right down to one that feels more appropriate for what you're getting.
GhostBed Luxe mattress review: price and deals
- The brand’s second most expensive mattress
- More expensive than other upscale mattresses with cooling properties
- Currently half-off the price at multiple outlets
The GhostBed Luxe is considered a luxury mattress with a queen size normally costing $2,970. However, on the GhostBed website, the mattress has been half off for quite some time with no expected end date for the sale (see how this compares to what other brands offer in our mattress deals and sales roundup). Here's the official MSRP for each size, as well as the price you can expect to buy it for:
- Twin size MSRP – $2395 (on sale for $1198)
- Twin XL size MSRP – $2595 (on sale for $1298)
- Full size MSRP – $2725 (on sale for $1363)
- Queen size MSRP – $2970 (on sale for $1485)
- King size MSRP – $3270 (on sale for $1635)
- Cal King size MSRP – $3290 (on sale for $1645)
- Split King size MSRP – $5190 (on sale for $2595)
This mattress is also available from a number of third-party retailers, such as Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, and Overstock, all with similar discounts. As a rule of thumb, if the pricing is the same we'd always recommend buying direct from the brand, to make aftercare more straightforward. Our price widgets will pull in the best prices from a range of trusted retailers.
Even at half off, the GhostBed Luxe is still more expensive than some of the best budget mattress brands, as well as mid-range options like the DreamCloud Premier Hybrid Mattress, Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress, and Saatva Classic mattress. For the price, we’d expect the GhostBed Luxe mattress to offer a lifetime warranty rather than a 25-year warranty and have more sustainable materials and certifications, such as those found with the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Organic Latex mattress.

See the GhostBed Luxe at GhostBed When regularly priced, the GhostBed Luxe is expensive, but it’s been on sale at half the price for some time. If price is of concern, you’ll be glad to know that GhostBed offers a 101-night sleep trial that goes into effect after you’ve slept on the mattress for 30 days. Unfortunately, the limited warranty only covers 25 years, and between the 11-25th year, GhostBed determines whether or not to repair the mattress, and if they do, they’ll charge owners a handling fee or offer a new mattress at a prorated rate.
GhostBed Luxe mattress review: materials
Seven layers comprise the GhostBed Luxe mattress. The first three layers – a half-inch Ghost Ice Fabric Cover, one inches of gel memory foam, and a bit of cooling fiber – come together to form the quilted cover. The next layer is the patented Ghost Ice cooling technology meant to absorb and disperse body heat, followed by two inches of gel memory foam. A two-inch bounce foam layer and a 7.5-inch-high density base foam make up the last layers.
GhostBed Luxe mattress review: firmness and comfort
- A medium-plush mattress with a 6 out of 10 rating
- Top layer has a slight cloud-like give
- Provides a soft and supportive feel
At first, the GhostBed Luxe mattress felt incredibly soft, but the longer we laid on it, the more we realized that the layers beneath the quilted cover provided a significant amount of support. In the end, we decided the mattress was more like a 6 rather than a 5 on a 10-point firmness scale.
There is a soft give to the top layer that creates a hug or cloud-like experience. It’s this design aspect that made sleeping on our side. If it had been slightly firmer, the mattress could have probably supported our hips better and prevented discomfort when trying to sleep on our back.
It only took a few days for our body to adjust to the mattress’ design. Throughout our testing, we slept deep and contently as long as we fell asleep on our side.
GhostBed Luxe mattress review: performance
- Motion isolation is fantastic
- Ghost Ice cover is cool to the touch
- Superb edge support
We slept on a king size GhostBed Luxe mattress for two weeks, making sure to test it for a wide range of features like pressure relief, motion isolation, edge support, and set up. With GhostBed's claim that it’s the 'Coolest Bed in the World', we paid particular attention to its cooling capabilities. From the onset, the materials and construction seemed standard, though perhaps more upscale than luxurious.
Score: 5 out of 5
The king-sized mattress arrived in box on the front porch. Although the mattress itself weighs 150 lb, we were able to move the mattress inside the house and to our bedroom without assistance.
After removing the mattress from the plastic wrapping, it was placed directly on our platform bed and allowed to inflate overnight. According to the instructions, the bed can be placed on a box spring, platform bed, or wood foundation and be slept on immediately though it may take up to 24 hours to recover from its compressed state. Our mattress rose to full height in a few hours.

Off-gassing
Score: 2 out of 5
The GhostBed Luxe is a CertiPUR-US certified mattress which means it’s free of phthalates, ozone depleters, mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and PBDE flame retardants. Yet, it had a bothersome off-gassing smell best described as sweet, cloying almonds that lasted throughout the two-week testing period (although it seemed to be less pungent toward the end of the two weeks).
We tried to sleep on the mattress for the first night, but the smell was so overwhelming it gave us a headache, so we let it sit overnight. It should be noted that we did not have a mattress protector on the mattress. This is the first time that our reviewer has ever noticed an off-gassing smell among any of the seven mattresses she has tested.
Pressure relief
Score: 4 out of 5
The mattress is best described as medium-plush, which means its soft but offers a surprising amount of support. It’s about a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which we determined based on our own experience and placing a 12.5lb dumbbell in the center of the mattress. It sunk about half an inch.
We tested this mattress in various sleep positions and found that when sleeping on our side, we were most comfortable and aligned. During the night, we ended up on our stomach.
The mattress does not seem to support the hips as well as it did our shoulders, knees, and other parts of our body, which is why we never felt comfortable sleeping on our back. When we tried to sleep on our back, it caused our backside to sink and our lower back to ache.
The Tuft & Needle Original Mattress and the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Organic Latex mattress did better at addressing pressure points, aches, and strains.
Motion transfer
Although we tested the motion transfer of the GhostBed Luxe with a friend and found it particularly excellent, we thought it best to conduct an experiment to verify our initial thoughts. We placed a wine glass in the center of the mattress and dropped a 12.5-lb dumbbell within four, 10, and 25 inches away to see if the wine glass would topple or shake.
In all three instances, the wine glass never fell, and it only slightly shook (but didn’t threaten to topple) when the dumbbell was dropped 4 inches away. Among the mattresses our reviewer has tested, the GhostBed Luxe is in the top percentile for motion transfer making it a great option for those with fidgeting partners.
Temperature regulation
The temperature regulation of this mattress is very impressive, and we can see why it’s called the 'Coolest Bed in the World' (though we can’t verify that claim). When we touched the quilted Ghost Ice Cover, it was cold to the touch, which is not a feature we’ve experienced with prior mattresses.
GhostBed Luxe’s cooling technology is designed so that it pulls the heat that a sleeper’s body transfers to the quilted cover, down before dispersing it away from the body. To test this out, we slept on the mattress with microfiber sheets and a linen duvet filled with a heavy comforter. We set the temperature in our home to 78-80 degrees, but since the nights were growing cooler, the house temperature remained about 75-77 degrees through the night.
We never felt overheated or even warm when sleeping on the mattress. The airflow was terrific, and our temperature remained comfortable and cool. In fact, there were a few times we had to put on socks and pants because our legs and feet grew cold.
Edge support
We used a 12.5-lb. dumbbell to test the edge support of the mattress. Because the Ghost Ice cover has memory foam, the dumbbell sunk only about half an inch, and yet it didn’t really change the 13-inch height of the mattress.
Sitting along the edge, we found it to be very supportive. Getting in and out of bed was easy and when we slept near the edge of the mattress, we never felt like our arms or legs were slipping off or weighing the mattress down. Overall, the edge support of the GhostBed Luxe was fantastic, perhaps even more so than some of the mattresses we’ve tested in the past.
By the end of the testing period, the mattress looked to be in good shape and for the most part, appeared durable. We did notice that by the end of the testing period the exterior cover was still loose and could bunch together at the top or along the edges of the bed where it met the frame.
Based on our experience reviewing other mattresses, we don’t believe that this mattress will last a lifetime, which makes sense when you consider that GhostBed only offers a 25-year warranty (to be clear, here's how often you should change your mattress anyway). The other thing that concerns us is how GhostBed informs buyers that the firmness of the mattress is affected by bedroom temperature; it may firm up in the winter and soften in the summer.
This change in the firmness could affect the durability of the materials. GhostBed suggests that buyers always keep their bedroom between 65-75 degrees but that may be hard for some buyers depending on where they live, weather changes, price of gas or electricity, etc. This is the first warning of its type we’ve ever seen on a mattress.
GhostBed Luxe mattress review: customer reviews
A significant number of reviews are available on the GhostBed website, Target, and Home Depot. Combined, they have an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars.
Among reviewers, the pros and cons are a mix. What we could surmise is that sleepers range in their opinion of the firmness. Some think it’s firmer than expected and others think it's too soft. Of those who complained about the firmness rating, many agreed that they experienced discomfort in their back when sleeping on the mattress.
The same can be said for the cooling technology. While an overwhelming number of reviewers found the cooling technology to work wonderfully, a select number of reviewers claim that the cooling properties and airflow was not as advertised.
The only widely agreed upon consensus among the reviews was that it took sleepers a few days for their body to adjust to the mattress.
Should you buy the GhostBed Luxe mattress?
The GhostBed Luxe mattress is primarily suited to couples, side sleepers, and those who need a cool and airy bed. It passed our motion transfer test with flying colors, is physically cool to the touch, and regulates temperature at night. Although it’s advertised as beneficial for back sleepers, it doesn’t seem to provide enough firmness to support the hips.
We had a difficult time with the off-gassing smell and did not like the idea that the bed’s firmness would change depending on the bedroom temperature. The pricing is reflective of the patented cooling technology, but it’s considerably high when comparing the quality and construction of other luxury mattress brands.
We can understand why a mattress like the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress is expensive – the materials are all organic, sustainable, and acquired through responsible business practices. Plus, it has a lifetime warranty. We’ve even tested less expensive mattresses like the Tuft & Needle Classic and the Amerisleep AS3 and found them more comfortable and made with better materials. The difference really lies in the GhostBed Luxe’s cooling properties – which we’ve admitted – is impressive.
To sum it up, the GhostBed Luxe is a great buy for side sleepers and those whose biggest concern is getting hot at night. Just make sure to take advantage of a sale when purchasing this mattress.

What we love about the GhostBed Classic:
- GhostBed offers the responsiveness and cooling benefits of latex, but also the contouring benefits of memory foam (its second layer).
- It has above average cooling and responsiveness benefits compared to similar mattresses.
- Fun fact: the owner of GhostBed used to be afraid of ghosts hiding under his bed as a kid, which is how the name “GhostBed” was created.

Unique Mattress Advisor Scores
Now that you know more about the mattress and our testing process, you can see our individual score breakdown for each test we performed on the GhostBed mattress. You can learn more about our review process here .
⭐Total Score for the GhostBed Mattress: 8.5/10⭐
The best/worst things.
- Edge Support : GhostBed offers awesome edge support for people who sleep on the edge of the bed, or simply like to lounge there.
- Responsiveness: If you toss and turn at night, you need a bed that can keep up. Luckily, GhostBed scored well in responsiveness, making it a good choice for combination sleepers.
- Cooling: The original GhostBed is the reason this mattress brand has a reputation for keeping people cool at night . The gel foam and latex combination allows you to stay cool throughout your sleep.
- Durability: The premium, high-quality layers in GhostBed allow it to last for years. So much, that your new bed even comes with a 20-year warranty.
- Motion Isolation: GhostBed wasn’t the best in motion isolation in our tests, meaning it may not be the mattress for couples.
- Pressure Relief: In our lab test, GhostBed did not offer the best pressure point relief and spinal alignment combination, meaning this may not be the best pick for side sleepers.
Responsiveness
We test responsiveness by lying on GhostBed and changing positions to see how quickly we can get comfortable. This mattress factor is most important to those of you to tend to toss and turn throughout the night. If this sounds like you, you’re in luck. We found that the GhostBed mattress did a darn good job of responding to our movements and keeping us comfortable.

Pressure Relief
We measure pressure relief using a handy dandy pressure map so there’s no going wrong. While lying on our backs, pressure was very minimal in the lower back area. But where it all went wrong was when we lay on our sides. As you can see in the video above and this photo, there are areas of red in the hips and the shoulders meaning there is the most pressure in these sensitive areas: a red flag for all of you side sleepers.

Edge Support
Though the pressure relief test could’ve gone better, the edge support test shined. We felt a solid support system as we sat on the edge of the bed to tie our shoes as well as lying there in multiple sleeping positions: great news for couples who sleep on complete opposite sides of the bed.

Product Information
Let’s look inside the GhostBed mattress and see who it performs best for.
How Firm is GhostBed?
GhostBed is about a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale, making its firmness level a medium-firm to firm. This works for most types of sleepers.

What Sleeping Position Does It Work For?
Ghostbed’s firmness level make it a good mattress for back sleepers and good stomach sleeper mattress , while combination sleepers will rest well due to its responsiveness. However, because GhostBed isn’t the best for spinal alignment, this may not be a side sleeper’s first choice. For better options, head over to our best mattress for side sleepers page.

Does It Sleep Hot?
The GhostBed mattress is made with both naturally cool latex foam and a cooling gel memory foam layer, so you can keep the night sweats at bay. However, GhostBed will not be as cool as an innerspring mattress.

How Much Weight Does It Support?
When placed on a strong foundation, the GhostBed mattress can support up to 750 lbs. For customers over 300 pounds, it’s recommended that you purchase the king-size GhostBed.
What Foundations or Bed Frames Are Compatible?
GhostBed works with any flat surface or a box spring/foundation in good condition. If you use a slatted platform the slats can be no longer than 4″ apart. You can also place you mattress on the floor.

What’s Inside?
The GhostBed is made with quality latex and foam materials designed for optimum support, responsiveness and cooling. Its layers include

- Plush Cover: This soft, breathable fabric is a viscose and polyester blend. It wicks away body heat and moisture.
- Top Layer : This aerated synthetic rubber latex comfort layer absorbs pressure.
- Middle Layer: Gel memory foam offers pressure-relief that is comfortable and cooling.
- Bottom Layer: High-density support foam makes GhostBed durable.

The GhostBed comes compressed in a box and is 89 lbs. for a queen, so we recommend setting up with a partner. It took us around 2 minutes to finish unboxing and set up. There was an off-gassing odor, but it went away by the end of the day. Because of this, we recommend waiting until the smell is gone to put on sheets.

Like any bed-in-a-box mattress, it can take up to 30 days to adjust to a new mattress feel and fully break it in . The GhostBed in particular will take some time (a few hours to a full day) to expand to its full size, air out, and adjust to the temperature of your bedroom.

GhostBed Mattress Firmness & Feel
Ghostbed firmness.
The GhostBed is considered a medium-firm mattress, around 6/10 on the 1–10 mattress firmness scale. It’s a popular firmness level because it supports your body without allowing excessive pressure build up near your hips and shoulders.
Back sleepers will appreciate the combination of a soft, contouring top layer and supportive base layers. Stomach sleepers with lightweight to average-weight body types will also get a balance of support and comfort, though heavier folks are prone to spinal misalignment, since they’ll sink deeper into the mattress. Most side sleepers will want a softer mattress—or at least one that’s more pressure-relieving.
What Does the GhostBed Feel Like?
While the GhostBed has a soft, cushy top layer, it’s only 1.5” thick, which means you quickly bump into the firmer support layers beneath. We felt like we were laying more “on” the mattress than “in” it. In other words, even though it has a memory foam layer, it doesn’t have the “hug” of memory foam—instead, it feels supportive and relatively bouncy for an all-foam bed.
What Sleeping Position Is the GhostBed Best For?
1 = Very poor, 2 = Not good, 3 = Fair, 4 = Good, 5 = Excellent
Back Sleepers
The best mattresses for back sleepers support their lower backs, necks, legs, and hips. The Ghostbed’s firmness and dense memory foam layers provide great support, helping to keep the spine straight throughout the night. The soft top layer also gives added contouring when lying on your back. Heavyweight back sleepers won’t find the support they need in the Ghostbed flagship mattress, but lightweight and average-weight back sleepers should get ample support.
Stomach Sleepers
Similar to back sleepers, stomach sleepers need support in their hips, legs, back, and neck. The Ghostbed is firm enough to keep average-weight and lightweight stomach sleepers’ spines properly aligned while also preventing their hips from sinking into the mattress. Heavyweight sleepers, on the other hand, might not find the support they need for their hips in the Ghostbed mattress. For supportive mattresses, see best mattresses for stomach sleepers .
Side Sleepers
When people sleep on their sides, they require a softer mattress that will cradle their hips and shoulders and relieve these pressure-heavy spots. Since the GhostBed is on the firmer side of medium-firm, lightweight , average-weight and heavyweight side sleepers may want a more plush mattress that can conform to their body when lying on their side, but the mattress isn’t so firm that side sleepers can’t get a good night’s rest on it.
Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers frequently change positions while sleeping, so their mattress needs to accommodate their various sleeping positions. The GhostBed uses a combination of latex and foam, making the bed responsive to your movements for all body types . Those who toss and turn can also check out our list on the best mattress for combination sleepers .

GhostBed Mattress Performance
Is the ghostbed mattress cooling.
Standard memory foam mattresses had a bad reputation for grabbing body heat and letting it raise the mattress temperature throughout the night. The GhostBed has technology meant to keep the sleeping surface cool. To start, the cover is stitched with a breathable blend of viscose and polyester.
Next, the latex top layer is aerated (i.e. hole punched), and the hundreds of small holes promote airflow. Finally, the memory foam layer is infused with temperature-regulating gel. While the GhostBed doesn’t make our list of best cooling mattresses , it does a great job of keeping you cool for an all-foam bed.
Edge Support
Typically all-foam beds are known for having less-than-stellar edge support, but the latex foam used in the GhostBed is strong enough to offer good (not great) support along the four edges of the mattress.
When you sit on the edge, you won’t slide off onto the floor, and you’ll be able to sleep right up along the edge of the bed without feeling unstable. Our testers did note that they felt better supported while laying, rather than sitting, along the edges of the bed.
Responsiveness
The responsiveness of this mattress comes mainly from the layer of latex on the top of the bed. Latex is well-known for adding bounce, meaning that you shouldn’t feel like you’re sinking too deeply into the GhostBed mattress. Instead, you should be able to move and change positions relatively easily and without feeling “stuck.”

Motion Isolation: Is it good for those who share a bed?
If you sleep with a partner who tends to wake you up at night with constant tossing and turning, you know the importance of finding a mattress with adequate motion isolation. There is some motion transfer across the GhostBed, probably due to the latex layer at the top of the mattress.
For options that do a better job of dampening motion transfer, check out the best mattresses for couples .
Normally mattresses made entirely of foam are silent, but our testers could hear each other moving around on the mattress surface. Fortunately, the sound was subtle and much quieter than the squeaking associated with old school innerspring mattresses.
Pain Relief
We typically divide pain relief into two categories: joint pain and back pain. The GhostBed earned only average scores for pressure relief, so it’s not the best option for those with joint pain or arthritis, particularly if you sleep on your sides. However, the supportive feel of the foams helps to keep your spine aligned, which is key when looking for a mattress for back pain . However, heavier folks should opt for an even firmer mattress, preferably one with coils.
The GhostBed earned above average scores for responsiveness and temperature regulation, which are two main factors we consider when recommending a mattress for sex . You may notice a little noise coming from the latex foam, but it shouldn’t be noticeable to those outside of your bedroom.
Off-Gassing
Off-gassing is an industry term describing the process of new foam airing out. It’s similar to the way a freshly painted room smells. The odor is non-toxic and temporary, but it can be bothersome while it lasts. Those GhostBed had a very noticeable odor when we unboxed it, but leaving off bedding and allowing the mattress to air out for 24 hours solved the problem.
We estimate that the GhostBed will last you around seven years before showing signs of wear. Latex is a very durable mattress material, but memory foam and polyfoam are prone to breaking down after seven or eight years of regular use.

Constructi on: What’s Under the Surface?
The GhostBed is an 11″ latex and foam mattress with three layers that work to give great support to the sleeper. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers are going to get the most pleasure out of this mattress, but some side sleepers might find the latex and foam layers too firm to provide ample cradling around their pressure points.
Layer #1—Plush Cover: The cover is soft, breathable viscose fabric that wicks away heat and moisture.
Layer #2—Comfort Layer: The 1.5″ top layer is aerated synthetic rubber latex that absorbs pressure. You won’t sink or get loss in the mattress either, since the latex bounces back.
Layer #3—Transition Layer: The 2″ transition layer is memory foam infused with a cooling gel that offers pressure relief for the hips, thighs, back, and shoulders. If you’re struggling with back pain, this pressure relief could help.
Layer #4:—Support Layer: The bottom layer of the GhostBed is a thick, 7.5″ piece of high-density foam. This support foam layer is very resilient and supports the rest of the mattress, giving it a great chance to gracefully withstand years of use.

How Do the Policies Measure Up?
Shipping and unboxing.
The GhostBed is delivered to your door compressed and rolled into a shipping box. The company ships free to the 48 contiguous states, and you should expect to see the new bed at your door within 3-5 business days. That almost qualifies as lightning-quick in the mattress industry.
You only need to take the GhostBed out of the box, unroll it onto a box spring, foundation or adjustable base, and the mattress will spring to life. It may take a few hours to a full day for the mattress to fully expand after its trip in a vacuum-sealed plastic covering and box. You can still sleep on it almost immediately.
How Long Does the GhostBed Warranty Period Last?
All GhostBed warranties are pro-rated, which means that GhostBed will repair or replace defective mattresses, minus the cost of handling or transportation, for the first ten years of the warranty.
Between years 11–20 or 11–25, depending on the length of the warranty, GhostBed will repair the mattress and charge a handling cost to the owner or replace the mattress and charge the owner for transportation costs plus a prorated charge. The pro-rated charge is 50 percent of the original purchase price in the 11th year and increases 5 percent every year after.
Keep in mind that the mattress cover for all four models is only warranted one year from the original date of purchase against faults in material or workmanship. As such, a mattress protector is recommended.

What is Covered by the GhostBed Warranty?
Indentations and body impressions.
GhostBed covers indentations (body impressions) greater than 1”, but this doesn’t include sagging associated with foundation, platform, or box spring issues.
Mattress Cover
For all four GhostBed models, the mattress cover is only backed by the warranty for one year from the date of original purpose. Coverage includes faults in material or workmanship, but GhostBed doesn’t specify what qualifies as a “fault” in the outer cover.
Physical Flaws, Including Splitting and Cracking
Most mattress warranties include coverage for physical flaws that occur when normal usage and proper handling are observed. Splitting and cracking in the latex and memory foam materials are examples of physical flaws.
Repair and Replacements Costs for Defective Mattresses
If your mattress is deemed defective by GhostBed, the company will cover repair and replacement costs for the first 10 years (minus shipping and handling costs). During and after year 11, owners will be required to pay a prorated replacement cost, plus shipping and handling.
What the GhostBed Warranty Does Not Cover
- Off-Gassing Smells
- Discomfort and Mattress Feel
- Changes in the Cooling Properties of the Mattress
Even if shoppers find that the GhostBed begins to sleep a little warmer over time, GhostBed does not provide coverage for repair or replacements associated with changes in the cooling properties of its mattresses. The brand claims that a decrease in the effectiveness of these cooling features is normal over time with use and exposure to the environment.
Things That Would Void the GhostBed Warranty
- The mattress has been physically damaged, burned, cut, or stained
- Products that are abnormally soiled or unsanitary
- Second-hand sale of the mattress to anyone but the original purchaser
- Mattresses not registered with GhostBed within 30 days of purchase
- Mattresses that are not purchased from an authorized dealer
- Proof of purchase (original store receipt) is not provided
- Use of an inappropriate foundation, platform bed frame, or slat base
How Does the GhostBed Warranty Measure Up?
The bottom line about GhostBed’s warranties: they’re on par with other mattress companies with regard to coverage, and a little more generous than average with regard to length.
In other words, although GhostBed technically offers 20–25 years of coverage, the first 10 years of the warranty are the most beneficial. After year 10, owners will be responsible for a relatively large portion of the cost of the repair or replacement.
GhostBed also skirts full protection for customers by explicitly stating that some of its materials are bound to decrease in effectiveness over time. We appreciate that GhostBed is honest about this in the warranty information provided on GhostBed.com, but consumers would benefit from full coverage that includes protection from long-term issues with the beds’ cooling features, especially if that’s the main reason the customer purchased their GhostBed mattress.
Filing a Warranty Claim With GhostBed
The process for filing a warranty claim is the same regardless of which GhostBed mattress you purchase. For your claim to be reviewed, your GhostBed must be registered on www.GhostBed.com within 30 days of the original purchase date, you must be the original purchaser, and you must have proof of purchase via a copy of the original store receipt that reflects the purchase date, location, and price.
GhostBed customers have two options for filing a claim:
- Call – Contact GhostBed’s customer service team by calling 1-855-855-4499 to get started with filing your claim.
- Email – Send an email to GhostBed’s customer service team by emailing [email protected] and include details about the defect, photograph proof, and an attachment of your original purchase receipt.
Trial Period
GhostBed’s return policy says that you will be able to try the GhostBed for 101 nights, around three months. You can return it for free during your trial period after sleeping in it for at least 30 nights, to get used to the mattress and allow the foam to break in. (The mattress tends to be firmer when it’s fresh out of the box). You will get a full refund of the purchase price if you return the bed during the sleep trial, but only if you placed the order directly through GhostBed.
The GhostBed folks will take care of repacking it. GhostBed also takes care to donate the mattress to local charities and shelters so they don’t go to waste. These policies are often found in many of the best online mattress brands.
Common GhostBed Mattress Complaints
Misleading warranty coverage.
GhostBed does prominently advertise the length of its warranties on its website and social media channels, using 20- and 25-year warranties as a selling point for its products. Coverage is provided for years 11 and beyond, but the cost to the consumer is so high that the greatest value of the warranty is in the first 10 years. That being said, experts recommend replacing your mattress every 7 to 10 years, so GhostBed thoroughly protects your purchase for the time period during which it’s healthy to keep the mattress.
Untrue Claims About Motion Transfer
A high-quality, well-made bed should do something to isolate motion, especially if it’s all-foam. That being said, GhostBed doesn’t make any bold claim about how well the Original will distill motion on its website, so customers who are dissatisfied with how well the bed performs here may have a very sensitive partner or be overweight.
If your purchase the GhostBed and find it too responsive, consider a memory foam or pillow topper, which may help the bed absorb more motion than average
Larger sleepers and couples most frequently cite issues with the GhostBed’s heat retention. The Original GhostBed technically isn’t supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers, but if reviewers are complaining about the GhostBed Luxe, GhostBed Flex, or GhostBed 3D Matrix, all of which have dedicated cooling features, GhostBed may have some work to do here with regard to the effectiveness of its cooling technology.
If you sleep hot, the best option of GhostBed’s inventory will be the GhostBed 3D Matrix. It has a hybrid design for better airflow, features cooling materials, and can be supportive enough for heavyweight sleepers. It is, however, the most expensive GhostBed mattress.
Comparing Different GhostBed Mattresses
Ghostbed vs. ghostbed flex.

The GhostBed Flex adds individually-wrapped coils to the original GhostBed design. It’s just a bit softer than the original GhostBed mattress, and it comes with a “GhostBounce” layer of latex. Those looking for something with a little more softness and bounce should appreciate the GhostBed Flex, along with those who love the breathability and enhanced airflow of coils.
Read our full GhostBed Flex Mattress Review to learn more.
GhostBed vs. GhostBed Luxe

The GhostBed Luxe offers a more plush, conforming feel than the original GhostBed mattress. It also includes advanced cooling materials like the Ghost Ice fabric and a heat-sensing Ghost Ice construction layer. It’s more expensive than the GhostBed, but might just be worth the splurge if you’re looking for something soft, yet cooling.
Read our full GhostBed Luxe Mattress Review to learn more.
GhostBed vs. GhostBed 3D Matrix

The GhostBed 3D Matrix is the most advanced mattress model of the GhostBed line. The 3D Matrix is a hybrid mattress with individually-pocketed coils and foam layers, including a heat-transfer gel layer that works to cool the body throughout the night.
The GhostBed is a little firmer, so side sleepers should go with the 3D Matrix. The 3D Matrix also does a better job of supporting heavyweight sleepers, since it has the stability and durability of coils. You’ll pay significantly more for the 3D Matrix, so budget shoppers will likely lean toward the original GhostBed.
You can also upgrade to the Ghost SmartBed 3D Matrix, which has a base layer of air chambers with sensors that automatically adjust to your position as you sleep.
Read our full GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Review to learn more.
GhostBed vs. GhostBed Natural

The GhostBed Natural is a hybrid mattress that’s made with Dunlop latex, Talalay latex, coils, organic cotton, and wool. It’s one of the best GhostBed mattresses, but it’s also one of the most expensive.
The Natural works for all sleeping positions and body types, and it’s responsive enough to keep up with your changes in position. It also outperformed the original GhostBed in every performance category. Go with the GhostBed Natural, unless your budget won’t allow it.
Read our full GhostBed Natural Mattress Review to learn more.
Comparing GhostBed to the Competition
Ghostbed vs. avocado green.

The Avocado Green is another latex mattress that’s responsive and temperature neutral. Unlike the GhostBed, the Avocado doesn’t have memory foam and has a coil base instead of foam. It feels bouncier and firmer than the GhostBed, though you can add a latex pillow top that softens the feel a bit.
Choose the GhostBed if you like a little more cushion and have a limited budget (the Avocado is more expensive). Go with the Avocado if you like a firmer feel and want the bounce and breathability of coils.
See our full Avocado Green Mattress Review for more information.
GhostBed vs. Saatva Latex Hybrid

The Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress also has a latex top layer, but it has a coil base layer instead of high-density foam. The coils and latex give it a firmer feel that’s best for stomach sleepers and back sleepers who like a firm mattress.
The Saatva is marginally better for hot sleepers, since it has breathable coils. It’s also a better choice for those who want natural materials. The GhostBed is more affordable, and it works just as well for back and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs.
See our full Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress Review for more information.
GhostBed vs. WinkBeds EcoCloud

The WinkBeds EcoSleep mattress has a simple construction of Talalay latex and coils inside an organic cotton cover. It has the same medium-firmness as the GhostBed, but it’s bouncier because of the coils.
Both mattresses work well for back and stomach sleepers, but the WinkBeds can also support heavyweight side sleepers. Neither isolate motion very well or offer above average pressure relief. If budget is your main concern, the WinkBeds is significantly more expensive than the GhostBed.

Does the GhostBed have enough pressure relief for side sleepers?
Side sleepers should think twice about the GhostBed. It probably won't offer enough pressure relief to truly cradle sensitive joints like the shoulders and hips. This is especially true for those with lightweight or heavyweight body types, since we saw the most pressure build-up with those body types.
Are GhostBed mattresses made in the U.S.?
The GhostBed is made in the U.S. by Nature's Sleep respectable company that's been around for 15 years. This is not just another marketing company trying to get in on the new mattress-in-a-box fad; it is an established mattress company taking advantage of this newly popular distribution model.
Is the GhostBed good for back pain?
As a medium-firm latex and memory foam mattress, the GhostBed offers excellent spinal support to back sleepers under 230 lbs. It also supports the lower back of stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, though those with back pain may want an even firmer mattress for optimal spinal alignment.
The Nerd’s Take: What’s the Bottom Line?
The GhostBed is an affordable, medium-firm mattress made with latex and memory foam. It’s best for back and stomach sleepers under 230 lbs, as well as hot sleepers who like foam mattresses. It quickly responds when you shift positions, which is great for those who move around at night.

Hi there - Marc here, Founder of GhostBed.
It's been a challenging couple of years, hasn't it? The way we work, shop and live have all changed in so many ways.
But what hasn't changed is our commitment to helping you get a great night of sleep. Even with the delivery delays that many companies (including us!) have faced, we're proud to say that most GhostBed orders still ship lightning-fast.
In fact, most customers get their order within 2-5 days !
Why wait 25+ days compared to the competition when you could be sleeping soundly by next week? Opt for White Glove Setup and we'll even handle all the heavy lifting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this foundation the same as a box spring.
Technically, no. These days, some people use the term “box spring” interchangeably with bed foundation, but they are actually two different things .
A box spring refers to a wooden box filled with coiled springs that are tied down and covered with cloth. It’s meant to be used with a traditional innerspring mattress. A mattress foundation, on the other hand, refers to a base that’s either solid or slatted. It may or may not require a bed frame along with it. (Ours does not!)
We consider our All-in-One Foundation™ to be a “box spring alternative,” providing the same benefits but designed to be a better match for your memory foam, latex or hybrid mattress . The sturdy, metal slats are evenly spaced to provide ideal support for mattresses of all types.
How far apart are the slats?
With sturdy, all-metal slats spaced an optimal 5” apart, the All-in-One Foundation™ provides a stable surface designed to absorb shock and prevent your mattress from sagging.
While you may have heard that 3-4” spacing is ideal, that advice is a bit outdated! Smaller spacing was the to-go in the past, when thinner all-foam mattresses were popular. These days, most mattresses are thicker and made with higher-quality foams. Spacing the slats at 5” allows for extra airflow below your mattress without compromising on support.
Do I really need a box spring or mattress foundation?
A high-quality mattress is an investment, so it’s important to protect it! A foundation provides a solid and stable base for your mattress to rest on, which prevents sagging and extends its life. Most mattresses (including ours here at GhostBed) require the use of a foundation to be eligible for the warranty .
While a traditional box spring has to be paired with a frame, our foundation is designed for use on its own—no frame required. Sturdy metal legs elevate your mattress off the floor and the included cover gives it a beautiful, faux-upholstered look.
How do I assemble the GhostBed All-In-One Foundation™?
Our foundation couldn’t be any easier to assemble. Simply snap the frame ends together, pop the slats into place, pull the cover on and—voilà— you’ve got a sturdy, solid base for your mattress.
You can watch the assembly video here !
Will my headboard work with the All-In-One Foundation™?
Absolutely! The foundation comes with universal headboard brackets, which will work with virtually any headboard.
Can I use the All-In-One Foundation™ with a separate bed frame?
Yes, you can. The All-in-One Foundation™ will fit anywhere that a regular foundation or box spring does, as long as there is a clear opening for it to drop down into. If you have a frame with slats or storage drawers, for example, you would need to remove those in order for it to fit.
I'm looking for a quiet bed frame that won't creak or squeak. Is this it?
Yes! Solid frame pieces, welded legs, and plastic clips in between the slats ensure that you don’t get that metal-on-metal squeaking that can keep you up at night.
Can I adjust the height of the All-In-One Foundation™?
The legs on the All-In-One Foundation™ are welded on and cannot be adjusted or removed. Most customers don’t have any problems with this—at an ideal 14” height, it’s similar to the average platform bed.
Plus, who doesn’t love hidden storage space? With 12” of under-bed clearance, you’ll have plenty of room to hide away extra linens, off-season clothes, luggage, and more.
Where is the the All-In-One Foundation™ made?
The GhostBed All-in-One Foundation™ is designed and engineered in the United States. While we would have loved to keep production in the U.S., our primary goal was to create the highest-quality bed foundation. To achieve this, we’ve partnered with a facility in Asia with the expertise needed to manufacture such a great product. Every GhostBed factory and partner is held to the highest standards, and carefully vetted to ensure that you’re getting the outstanding GhostBed products you’re used to.
Can I return the All-In-One Foundation™?
No—all sales are final for the GhostBed All-In-One Foundation™.
Is there a warranty for the GhostBed All-In-One Foundation™?
Yes, the All-In-One Foundation™ includes a lifetime warranty for added peace of mind! The fabric cover includes a 1-year warranty.
It's very sturdy and helps give support to our Ghostbed mattress.

This paper presents the results of the metallographic study of the structural condition of metal in the billet after soft reduction. The billet is deformed in the withdrawal and straightening unit of the continuous casting production line when there is an uncrystallized core area in the bullet. The reduction takes place due to the movement of the top driven roll. The metallographic studies reveal the crack initiation characteristics when an external deformative action is applied in the course of incomplete crystallization of continuously cast billet. They provide a well-reasoned approach to selection of techniques minimizing the number of initiation centers.
