What are the Different Crew Roles on a Luxury Yacht?

2nd officer yacht jobs

Holly is the editor of Dockwalk. She grew up racing sailboats in England before switching to the world of superyachts and moving across the pond to Fort Lauderdale.

So you’ve scored your first job as crew on a superyacht — great! Here is a who’s who of everyone you will meet on board...

The role : Responsible for the entire vessel, including crew and guests

Responsibilities : Navigation, safety, personnel management, regulatory compliance, budget management

Reports to : The owner

The captain is the highest ranking member on board and carries four stripes on his/her epaulets . Not only is the captain responsible for the vessel’s safe navigation and operation, but every soul on board falls under their command, even the guests. Much like a ”sea-based CEO,” the captain oversees the entire operation from the exterior to the interior. They spend a significant amount of time in the wheelhouse navigating, but the role also requires a great deal of financial management, hiring, appraising, and dismissal of crew. Captains have an extensive amount of maritime experience, training, and seafaring knowledge, as well as a solid grasp of administration duties and accounting. On smaller vessels, the captain might be required to be more hands-on, but on larger vessels, s/he will be assisted by a number of supporting roles, such as the first officer.

First Officer

The role : The captain’s second in command

Responsibilities : Navigation, overseeing docking procedures, managing deck crew, maintenance of deck equipment, watchkeeping

Reports to : Captain

The first officer, also known as the chief officer or first mate, is the second in command and serves as the right-hand man to the captain. Their roles are similar with some duties shared but this can vary from vessel to vessel. The first officer will have a thorough understanding of the bridge and navigation systems and should be able to step in the captain’s absence. They will oversee all deck operations and maintenance and manage the deck crew as well as a long list of administrative duties. The first officer will also have knowledge of all safety procedures on board in case of an emergency.

Second Officer

The role : Supports the first officer and captain

Responsibilities : Managing deck crew, maintenance of deck equipment, navigation, watchkeeping

Reports to : Captain/First Officer

Most yachts will have a first officer but larger yachts might employ a second or even a third officer. This role is often filled by a former senior deckhand who is working their way up the ladder to become a captain. Essentially, the second officer acts as an understudy to the first officer and is jointly responsible for navigation, bridge watches, and management of the deck team. The second officer may also be the designated security, safety, or medical officer on board.

Chief Stewardess

The role : Responsible for the interior of a vessel

Responsibilities : Managing the interior team, food and beverage service, cabin preparation, liaising with guests, interior detailing, training of interior crew, upkeep of inventories and provisioning, orchestrating guest activities

The chief stewardess is the head of the interior team and often the first point of contact for guests during their stay on board. Reporting to the captain, the role involves the maintenance and presentation of the interior as well as the training and management of a team of stewardesses. Chief stewardesses have an expert eye for detail and are able to deliver a seven-star luxury experience by going the extra mile for guests and keeping an impeccable interior. They must be able to anticipate the needs of guests on board as well as being able to delegate duties to their fellow stewardesses. A chief stewardess is a superb organizer and is often tasked with arranging guest activities ashore, planning themed evenings, and throwing parties.

Second/Third Stewardess

The role : Responsible for maintaining the interior

Responsibilities : Housekeeping, interior detailing, food and beverage service, flower arranging, party planning

Reports to : Chief stewardess

The second and third stewardesses report to the chief stewardess and are responsible for the execution of all interior duties from guest service to bartending, cabin detailing, and laundry. This is a role that requires a high degree of organization , attention to detail, and discretion.

The role : Responsible for overseeing accounting and managing operations and administrative work

Responsibilities : Overseeing the accounting and budget, crew HR, port clearance, guest concierge

The purser is both an administrative and managerial role and more commonly found on larger vessels. Often filled by an experienced chief stewardess, the role of a purser is to manage the accounting and operational budget, customs for the vessel and goods, immigration for crew and guests, and handle trave logistics and itinerary management. They are also in charge of crew HR, including payroll, leave, crew travel, certificate management, and contracts. They can assist with procurement and will ensure all items are shipped to the vessel and delivered on board. The purser is the first line of contact for shoreside suppliers, agents, and management.

Chief Engineer

The role : Responsible for the engineering department and technical equipment

Responsibilities : Overseeing the vessel’s mechanical and electrical systems, managing and supervising repairs, managing and training a team of engineers

Day to day, the chief engineer is responsible for the maintenance of all the mechanical and electrical operations. As such, the chief engineer will have detailed knowledge of all systems on board the vessel, from engines and generators to air conditioning, refrigeration, electronics, and hydraulics. Troubleshooting is an essential skill for any engineer working on board a yacht and the chief engineer will manage or supervise any repair work required. Where repair work requires an external operative, the chief engineer will be responsible for coordinating with shore-side engineers. He or she will also be required to manage and train an entire team, which on larger vessels might consist of engineers, electricians, and ETOs (Electronic Technical Officer).

Second/Third Engineer

The role: Support the chief engineer in the maintenance of all onboard systems

Responsibilities : Maintaining the vessel’s mechanical and electrical systems, repair work

Reports to : Chief engineer

As the size of a yacht increases, so does the number and the complexity of systems on board. A second or third engineer might be required to pick up some of the maintenance work required.

The role : To maintain the exterior of a vessel and manage the deck crew

Responsibilities : Managing the deck crew, overseeing, assisting with and executing maintenance work on deck, line handling

Reports to : First Officer

The bosun is often an experienced former deckhand and leads a team of exterior crew. He or she is responsible for the maintenance of the exterior, from cleaning windows and daily washdowns to painting, caulking, and other basic repairs. As one of the more experienced members of the deck crew, they play an important role in communicating with the captain and first officer during docking procedures and are usually the first to get behind the wheel of a tender. The bosun will have a working knowledge of the toys on board and will supervise guests.

The role : To maintain the exterior of a vessel and assist with deck operations

Responsibilities : Wash downs, polishing, assisting the bosun in maintenance projects, supervising toy use, line handling, tender driving

Reports to: Bosun

Naturally, the bigger the boat, the larger the number of deck crew you have, which might consist of a lead deckhand and junior deckhands. The deckhand will support the bosun in executing maintenance and repair projects on deck and will assist in keeping the exterior of the yacht in immaculate condition. You can spot a member of the deck crew gripping a brightly colored chamois in one hand.

The role : Responsible for food on board

Responsibilities : Provisioning, menu planning, preparing meals, budget management

The chef plays an all-important role on board and is responsible for preparing and delivering meals to the highest possible standard. The superyacht chef will typically have experience working in restaurants or hotels or as a private household chef, with detailed knowledge of local and seasonable produce, food and wine pairings, and the ability to prepare menus with limited availability. A yacht chef will have often had extensive training with the ability to execute meals with precision and creative presentation and be able to adapt to any dietary requirement with ease. On smaller yachts, the role might be absorbed by a stewardess, while larger yachts may employ a sous chef.

Sous Chef/Crew Chef

The role : Supports the chef in provisioning and preparing meals

Responsibilities : Provisioning, menu planning, preparing meals

Reports to : Chef

Bigger yachts might have a sous chef to assist in the execution of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, for guests and crew. They will have similar knowledge of produce and menu planning with the ability to execute meals with detail. Some yachts will even have a dedicated crew chef who cooks for the crew only.

*Roles and responsibilities may vary from vessel to vessel

Sniper took picture of Trump rally shooter, saw him use rangefinder before assassination attempt, source says

By Nicole Sganga, Anna Schecter

Updated on: July 17, 2024 / 11:50 AM EDT / CBS News

A sniper from a local tactical team deployed to assist the U.S. Secret Service at former President Donald Trump's rally on Saturday took a picture of the gunman and saw him looking through a rangefinder minutes before he tried to assassinate the former president, a local law enforcement officer with direct knowledge of the events told CBS News.

The sniper was one of three snipers, members of local tactical teams, who were stationed inside the building that the shooter used in the attack, the officer said. The operations plan had them stationed inside, looking out windows toward the rally, scanning the crowd. The details about the three snipers were first reported by the local news outlet BeaverCountian.com.

One sniper inside spotted the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, outside and looking up at the roof, observing the building and disappearing, according to the officer who spoke to CBS News. The sniper observed Crooks as he returned to the building, sat down and looked at his phone. At that point, one of the local snipers took a picture of Crooks.

Next, the local sniper observed Crooks looking through a rangefinder, an instrument routinely used by marksmen to determine the distance of a target, and he immediately radioed to the command post, according to the local law enforcement officer. The local sniper also attempted to send the photo of the gunman up the chain of command.

The command post, according to multiple law enforcement officials, served as a central hub to streamline communications between U.S. Secret Service and the local officers from nearby state and county police forces. It is unclear if the command post received the alert.

Officials then lost track of Crooks, who disappeared, but soon returned for a third time with a backpack. The local sniper team called for backup — alerting the command post that the gunman had a backpack and was walking toward the back of the building.

By the time other local officers responded to the backup request, the gunman had scaled the building, positioning himself above and behind the local snipers inside the building, according to the officer.

Two other municipal police officers who heard the call for backup attempted to climb onto the roof. Butler County Sheriff Michael Sloupe told CBS Pittsburgh station KDKA that an armed municipal officer with Butler Township was hoisted by another officer onto the roof of the building where the gunman had taken a position. Crooks focused his rifle towards the officer who ultimately let go, falling off the roof. Moments later, the shooter began firing into the crowd.

A U.S. Secret Service sniper stationed in a building behind the former president fired off one round, according to multiple law enforcement officials, killing the gunman. Two federal law enforcement officers told CBS News the Secret Service team that ultimately killed the shooter was located on a building behind Trump's left shoulder.

A federal law enforcement bulletin obtained by CBS News identified the gunman as "an apparent lone attacker," warning violent extremists could try to conduct "follow-on or retaliatory" attacks over the next few months, related to November's election.

The gunman killed Corey Comperatore , a firefighter. Trump and two others — 57-year-old Marine Corps veteran David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhaver — were injured.

Man arrested in killing of detroit-area police officer.

MELVINDALE (AP) — The suspect in the fatal shooting of a Detroit-area police officer was arrested a day after he fled the shooting scene shirtless while riding a bike, authorities said.

Michael Lopez, 44, was arrested Monday evening on Detroit’s southwest side, the Michigan State Police’s Second District said in a post on X. He is the suspect in the death of Melvindale Officer Mohamed Said, who was killed Sunday while responding to a call about a suspicious person near a car wash.

Said was shot during a physical struggle with Lopez, Melvindale police Chief Robert Kennaley said.

Lopez had not been formally charged as of Tuesday morning, according to online court records. The state police said its “investigation continues and will be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor this week.”

Said, 23, had been a Melvindale officer for only 14 months. He was the third Michigan police officer killed in the line of duty in less than a month.

Lopez was paroled on June 22, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records. He previously served 12 years for carjacking and assaulting an officer in 2011, records show.

Amna Nawaz:

And let's take a step back now to delve into Vice President Harris' record and how she arrived at this pivotal moment.

William Brangham has a look at her path, from the daughter of immigrants to the favorite for the Democratic presidential nominee.

William Brangham:

In the blink of an eye, Vice President Kamala Harris went from being President Biden's biggest defender…

Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States (D) and U.S. Presidential Candidate: One thing we know about our President Joe Biden, he is a fighter.

… to the person most likely to replace him on the presidential ballot four months from now.

Harris securing the nomination would be historic, the first time a Black woman leads a major-party ticket. But it would be just the latest in a career of firsts for Harris, a politician who rose from district attorney to state attorney general to U.S. senator.

In 2021, she became the first woman and first Black American and South Asian American vice president.

Kamala Harris:

While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.

Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.

Harris is the daughter of immigrants from Oakland, California. Her mother was a scientist who emigrated from India to study at U.C. Berkeley. Her father was from Jamaica and became a prominent economist at Stanford.

In elementary school, Harris was bused from her predominantly Black neighborhood to a white one, part of an effort to desegregate local public schools. She lived in California until she was 12, when Harris moved with her mother and sister to Canada. Harris later enrolled at Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, D.C., where she studied political science and economics.

She then returned to the Bay Area for law school. And it was in San Francisco where Harris' political career began. In 2003, she was elected the city's district attorney.

To be a prosecutor is to really be engaged in one of the most — noblest professions that anyone could do and have.

Her career in law enforcement helped propel her to higher office, but also has earned her a good deal of criticism.

California's police unions were livid when she didn't press for the death penalty for a man who killed a police officer. She also championed providing a path for some nonviolent first-time drug offenders to get education and job training to prevent them from re-offending.

When we're talking about serious and violent crime, lock them up. But when we're talking about nonviolent crime, that is actually the crime that is occupying the bulk of our public resources and beds in our state prison system. And we need to have a meaningful system to reduce the likelihood that that revolving door will continue.

In 2010, Harris was elected attorney general of California, overseeing the largest state Justice Department in the U.S.

Harris' office took on predatory for-profit colleges and also secured a nearly $20 billion settlement with banks following the 2008 foreclosure crisis.

It was imperative that we not give a blank check of immunity to the banks for their wrongdoing.

Harris' tenure as attorney general also coincided with the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement and the emergence of criminal justice reform as a major issue.

In 2015, Harris didn't take a position a state law that would have required independent investigations when police killed civilians. Harris' office also tried to prevent nonviolent prisoners from being released after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that California's overcrowded prisons violated inmate's constitutional rights.

At the same time, her office launched implicit bias training for law enforcement officers in 2015.

We have developed and implemented a policy on implicit bias and racial profiling.

In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate in a landslide, becoming only the second Black woman to serve as a U.S. senator.

I intend to fight for truth and transparency and trust.

As senator, Harris shined in hearings with her pointed prosecutorial questioning of witnesses, including Brett Kavanaugh, after he'd been nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Can you think of any laws that give the government the power to make decisions about the male body?

Brett Kavanaugh, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice:

I'm happy to answer a more specific question.

Male versus female?

Brett Kavanaugh:

There are medical procedures.

That the government has the power to make a decision about a man's body?

In 2019, with a growing national profile, Harris joined the wide field of Democrats who lined up to challenge President Donald Trump.

I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for president of the United States.

But her bid for the White House struggled to gain traction, especially as she faced questions about her record as a prosecutor.

Fmr. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (HI):

She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.

Fmr. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard:

She blocked evidence — she blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so. And she fought to keep cash bail system in place. That impacts poor people in the worst kind of way.

As the elected attorney general of California, I did the work of significantly reforming the criminal justice system of a state of 40 million people, which became a national model for the work that needs to be done. And I am proud of that work.

Harris dropped out of the race before a single ballot was cast.

And I will keep fighting every day for what this campaign has been about, justice for the people.

Harris eventually endorsed Joe Biden and was then chosen by him to be his running mate.

In this election, we have a chance to change the course of history. We're all in this fight, you, me, and Joe, together.

In 2020, Biden and Harris won a contentious election.

We did it. We did it, Joe. You're going to be the next president of the United States.

And as vice president, Harris' tenure got off to a rocky start. After being tasked with stemming the root causes of migration to the U.S., Harris' first trip abroad as V.P. was to Mexico and Guatemala.

I want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border. Do not come. Do not come.

With increasing numbers of migrants coming to the U.S.-Mexico border, Harris was criticized for not visiting the region.

You haven't been to the border.

And I haven't been to Europe. I mean, I don't understand the point that you're making.

Although Harris later visited the border, it fed into the perception that the Biden administration was not doing enough to curb illegal border crossings.

In 2022, Texas' governor, Republican Greg Abbott bused migrants literally to her front door in Washington, D.C.

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX):

Kamala Harris was saying there's no problem on the border. So, she said the border was secure. And so I felt the need to be involved in the education process.

In the summer of 2022, the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision overturning the right to abortion marked a turning point for Harris.

She emerged as a fierce advocate for the administration on abortion rights and women's rights more broadly.

Do you not trust women to know what isn't their own best interest? You, some legislator in some state capital, the majority of whom are not women, are in a better position to tell her what she should do?

And with the Senate evenly split between Democrats and Republicans…

The Senate being equally divided, the vice president votes in the affirmative, and the bill, as amended, is passed.

… Harris' tie-breaking vote was key in many of the Biden administration's legislative victories, including the sweeping Inflation Reduction Act, which was America's most ambitious effort yet to tackle climate change.

Harris also took a leading role in efforts to reduce gun violence, overseeing the first ever Office of Gun Violence Prevention. She spoke with Geoff Bennett last September.

Geoff Bennett:

Absent congressional action, how will that effort make a significant change?

Well, congressional action is very important. There's no question about that. But, sadly, a lot of folks there just don't have the courage to do it. The work that we are doing is to make sure that we are implementing all of the executive orders that have already been implemented and passed.

With President Biden now out of the race, the 59-year-old Kamala Harris will again see her career and record closely examined as she tries to both unify the Democratic Party behind her bid and then turn her sights on defeating the former president.

Ex-Secret Service special agents explain why countersniper who saved Trump's life may have lost crucial seconds

  • Trump's life was saved by a Secret Service countersniper assigned to Saturday's detail.
  • But the shooter still managed to kill one rallygoer and injure two others before he was taken out.
  • Experts said heat, staffing, and a focus on a nearby tree line may have cost crucial seconds.

Insider Today

The Secret Service countersniper who narrowly saved the life of former President Donald Trump may have lost crucial seconds because of factors including the extreme heat, a lack of antisniper backup, and a likely focus on a nearby tree line, a former special agent told Business Insider.

"This countersniper made an amazingly quick decision and clearly saved Trump's life," Bill Pickle, the former special agent in charge of Al Gore's vice-presidential Secret Service detail, said.

"Our guys are the best shots in the world. That's what they do," Pickle said.

"And within a second of the moment this kid opened fire, the CS guy shot him," he said, using Secret Service shorthand to refer to the countersniper deployed at Saturday night's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"But someone will blame that CS and the spotter and say, 'If only he had been two seconds faster in spotting the shooter,'" the former special agent said.

"The real question may be: If there were more antisniper eyes on that building, could this have all been avoided?" he added.

How did the countersniper team not see the shooting suspect sooner?

Pickle said one area of focus for investigators would be how the shooter managed to get on top of the building without authorities taking notice.

"The other question is: Why wasn't this roof secured, and were there agents or law enforcement in there checking IDs?" he added.

"How did this kid figure out a way to get out on the rooftop and slither across that rooftop?" Pickle said. "He low-crawled across the roof on his hands and knees, and he pushed the weapon ahead of him just like in the military."

But even if they see a shooting suspect quicker, countersnipers may not always have the ability to act immediately when they spot a threat, Anthony Cangelosi, a former special agent who directed the Secret Service's technical-security advances for presidential candidates, said.

"You either have to make a decision: 'Do I take a shot? Or do I not take a shot?'" Cangelosi told BI.

"What if you find out, 'Oh, I just killed a 20-year-old kid who loves the protectee, and he couldn't get in the venue, and he just wanted to get up on that roof?' No one wants to be in that position," Cangelosi said.

Cangelosi said the Secret Service team at the event should have a "site plan" that would include a layout of the area and the surrounding buildings.

The would-be assassin fired at least three rounds from a rooftop 150 yards from where Trump was speaking. He killed one rallygoer and critically injured two others before being shot dead by a yet-to-be-identified Secret Service countersniper who was positioned on another rooftop.

Related stories

One bullet grazed Trump's right ear , bloodying his face.

"This kid, at 150 yards, made a great shot," Pickle said Sunday of the would-be assassin, his voice grim. "I don't know the specifics of whether he used optics, meaning a scope on his rifle," he told BI.

"But even with optics, it takes somebody with training to aim at somebody's head from 150 yards away and you actually hit the edge of the head," he said.

"That's not a lucky shot," he added. "That's a guy who actually shot before."

The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks , 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. The FBI said it was still investigating a motive.

But for now, it's clear that at least three things may have factored into the several-second delay between when Crooks was seen crawling onto the roof and when the CS team saw and shot him, Pickle said.

The decision on how many antisnipers to deploy may prove the most critical factor, he said.

"Someone made a decision that that number of countersnipers was sufficient," he said. "And obviously, in hindsight, they were wrong because there was a kid who was able to get up there on that rooftop and pull the trigger three times at least."

How many CS teams were deployed?

Staffing decisions would have been made at the Secret Service's headquarters in Washington, DC, based on whatever agency personnel on the ground recommended after a several-day investigation of the site, Pickle said.

"An advance team actually does a lengthy survey, where they look at everything and then recommend what they need," he said.

"But if they're stretched for resources, headquarters can say we can only get you one team out there. And that's not unusual — if you don't have it, you don't have it," Pickle said.

"It always boils down to resources," he said. "And if it's not a resource problem, and the money was there, then it's still an allocation-of-resources problem," he said — meaning someone underestimated the forces needed to keep Trump safe.

Regardless of how many snipers were present, the Secret Service typically has "360-degree coverage" of an event where a sitting or former president is speaking, Cangelosi said.

Another factor is the weather.

"The CS guys would probably say: 'We were up there for four hours in 100-degree heat, and if we had another team up here or drone support, this wouldn't have happened,'" Pickle said.

The team may also have been focusing on a nearby tree line, seeing it as the primary risk.

"You're looking at everything that would hide a potential assassin," Pickle said.

"The first assumption is that if I'm a bad guy, I'm going to hide. Human nature is such that I'm going to be scanning the rooftops to make sure they're empty, but then I'm going to be focusing on that tree line because you think the bad guy is going to be hidden," Pickle said.

"You don't think the bad guy is going to be out in the open," he said.

Interagency squabbles and intense public scrutiny are forthcoming

Once the would-be assassin opened fire, "everything that happened up there was textbook and the way it should have happened," Pickle said. The CS team returned fire, long-gun-toting counterassault agents in black jumpsuits and helmets rushed the stage, and business-suited agents at the rally platform hurried Trump offstage.

"But why wasn't he identified seconds sooner?" Pickle asked of the shooter.

"Was it caused by exhaustion from being on a 100-degree roof for four hours? Was the CS team watching the heavy foliage there, which arguably was the best place to hide?" he said.

"An open roof is not the best place to hide. If he climbed out onto an open rooftop, he was prepared to die," he added.

"The worst nightmare for the Secret Service has always been a lone gunman who hasn't been announcing his views publicly and is ready to die," he said.

Pickle said Saturday's attack would be dissected for years to come and "will be in the training syllabus forever."

"It's going to be a circular firing squad," Pickle said of the interagency finger-pointing and conspiracy theories that will play out as the attempted assassination is scrutinized by the FBI, Congress, and the press and public.

Cangelosi told BI that "a lot of people talk and things just travel" within the agency after an event of this magnitude.

"We all want answers, and we want them as quickly as possible, but it's going to take some time," Cangelosi said. "You know the Secret Service; they're professionals. Mistakes are made. They're going to remedy them."

BETHEL PARK, Pa. − A local police officer was hoisted by his partner to the roof of the building where he spotted a gunman moments before the start of the deadly shooting at former President Donald Trump's campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a local law enforcement official said Tuesday.

Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe told Reuters the gunman, later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, saw the officer and pointed his rifle at him before the officer, holding to the roof's edge, dropped down to safety. Slupe, who said the officer was unable to use his gun under the circumstances, said Crooks quickly opened fire toward Trump, who was speaking in the Butler Farm Show grounds about 150 yards away on Saturday.

Trump was wounded, one attendee was killed, and two others were critically wounded. Secret Service snipers then fatally shot Crooks, the agency's director has said. The Secret Service issued a statement Tuesday saying the agency was "deeply grateful" to local police officers for their efforts — and denied blaming local authorities for the attack.

In an interview Monday on ABC News , Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said local police had been in the building and were "responsible for the outer perimeter of the building." The statement drew criticism from Patrick Yoes, national president of the Fraternal Order of Police, who said all officers at the scene acted "heroically."

"This is a failure at the management or command level who failed to secure an obvious weakness in the security of this event," Yoes said in a statement .

The Secret Service, in a statement early Tuesday, appeared to walk back the blame.

"We are deeply grateful to the officers who ran toward danger to locate the gunman and to all our local partners for their unwavering commitment," the agency's statement read. "Any news suggesting the Secret Service is blaming local law enforcement for Saturday's incident is simply not true."

Biden rejects accusations in interview: Biden denies using violent anti-Trump rhetoric

Developments:

∎ A man was shot and killed by out-of-town police officers about a mile from the site of the National Republican Convention in Milwaukee, outside the event's security perimeter, the USA TODAY Network reported Tuesday. A witness said the officers were trying to break up a fight.

∎ Nearly two-thirds of Republican voters − 65% − say Trump surviving the assassination attempt indicates divine intervention or God's will, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll. The same survey showed 80% of registered voters believe the country is spiraling out of control.

∎ Three snipers from local tactical teams, deployed to assist the Secret Service, were stationed inside the building from which Crooks opened fire Saturday, a local law enforcement officer with direct knowledge of the incident told CBS News .

∎ A video posted from the rally to social media shows civilians calling out to police that someone was on the roof moments before the shooting started. Cheatle said "a very short period of time" passed between then and when Crooks began shooting.

∎ The Republican National Convention entered its second day Tuesday, one day after Trump made his first public appearance since the shooting.

Reported Iran plot to kill Trump appears unrelated to Saturday shooting

The Secret Service boosted protection for Trump after learning about an Iranian plot to kill him before Saturday's assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, which appears to be unrelated, sources told USA TODAY.

Once the threat was ascertained, the White House confirmed with the Secret Service at a senior level that they were continuing to track the latest reporting, according to a national security official who was not authorized to speak publicly. The Trump campaign was made aware of “an evolving threat,” the official said, and the Secret Service surged resources and assets to protect Trump.

The revelation raises further questions about how Saturday's gunman could have reached a position to shoot Trump under what was supposed to be enhanced security. Law enforcement authorities have not identified ties between the shooting and any foreign adversaries, according to a statement Tuesday from the National Security Council.

Iran's United Nations mission called the plot accusations "unsubstantiated and malicious."

Former agent calls out Secret Service mistakes

Kenneth Valentine, a former Secret Service special agent in charge, told Reuters the agency responsible for protecting Trump should have had personnel surveilling rooftops and in a position to neutralize any threats.

Valentine also said the Secret Service should have identified the building from where Crooks shot − about 500 feet from where Trump spoke − as a security risk.

"He shouldn’t have been able to get up on the roof," Valentine said.

Trump schedules rally for a week after shooting

The Trump campaign has scheduled a rally for Saturday in Grand Rapids, Michigan, one week after he was wounded in an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump and running mate JD Vance will appear in Van Andel Arena on Saturday afternoon, the campaign announced.

Trump, who was nicked in the right ear by a bullet in Saturday's shooting, will give his nomination acceptance speech Thursday night in Milwaukee.

Victim sustained 'life-altering injuries,' family says

The family of James Copenhaver, one of the two victims injured while attending the Trump rally, issued a statement Tuesday thanking first responders and those who have provided him with medical treatment since the shooting.

The statement said Copenhaver, a 74-year-old Pennsylvania resident, sustained "life-altering injuries" in the attack and is in critical but stable condition at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The family also asked for privacy as Copenhaver recovers.

Crooks reportedly bought ladder before shooting

Hours before the shooting, Crooks stopped at a Home Depot in his hometown of Bethel Park and purchased a ladder, CNN and NBC reported, citing unnamed law enforcement officials.

Several rallygoers reported to local officers before the shooting that Crooks was acting suspiciously and was climbing a ladder, according to a law enforcement official who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation.

In a statement shared with USA TODAY, Home Depot deferred to law enforcement but condemned the shooting."The best source of information on this is law enforcement. We condemn the violence against former President Trump, and our thoughts are with him, the other victims of Saturday's horrific events, and their families," the statement said.

Neighbor of shooter stunned by tragedy

Officers with the Bethel Park Police Department on Tuesday continued blocking access to the street where the Crooks family home sits. The FBI has said the family has been cooperating with the investigation.

Late Monday, someone stepped out of the house, got into a red SUV parked in the driveway, and left as photographers hurried to capture a photo. Some neighbors who live within a block of the Crooks said they’re still in disbelief that one of their neighbors tried to assassinate Trump.

Vanessa Ovesney, 17, said it was a surprise to see the shooter was someone who had grown up in the peaceful suburb about an hour from where the shooting took place. She said Crooks looked familiar but that she couldn’t recall any interactions with him, though she had passed his house countless times."It’s unfortunate because we don’t know what was going on with him exactly," she said.

Memorial Thursday for shooting victim Corey Comperatore

Friends and loved ones of the former volunteer fire chief who was fatally shot at Trump's rally can pay their respects at a memorial Thursday, the family of Corey Comperatore announced.

Comperatore, 50, was a "hero" who dived to protect his wife and daughter when the shooting started, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said. An obituary released Monday says the father of two daughters was an engineer, a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, and a "man of God."

"Above all, Corey was the quintessential family man and the best girl dad," the obituary says, adding that "Corey's legacy is not just in the major milestones he achieved but in the small acts of kindness that marked his everyday life."

High anxiety: Can Trump and Biden lead us out of the moment we're in now?

Gunman's motive eludes investigators

Authorities have yet to reveal a motive for the shooting. Despite scouring Crooks’ phone and computer search activity, authorities have been unable to determine why Crooks, a 20-year-old dietary aid at a nursing home with no criminal record, acted as he did.

Interviews with family and friends have turned up no obvious motive, law enforcement sources told CNN .

Crooks would have been eligible to cast his first presidential vote in the Nov. 5 election. Public records reflect a mixed political background, as Crooks was a registered Republican who a few years ago made a $15 donation to a Democratic Party cause.

Records also show his father is a registered Republican and his mother a registered Democrat.

Obstructed view may have delayed sniper response at Trump rally

3D analysis shows countersnipers likely had difficulty seeing the gunman before he fired.

Within seconds of 20-year-old Pennsylvania resident Thomas Matthew Crooks opening fire at former president Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, on Saturday evening, he was fatally shot by the Secret Service. But how did a specialized team of countersnipers fail to prevent its worst security lapse in decades?

A Washington Post analysis, based on more than 40 videos and photos, as well as satellite imagery and terrain analysis used to build a 3D model examining the rally site and shooter’s position, found that the two Secret Service countersniper teams may have initially been hindered in their ability to see the shooter as he crawled up the roof due to its slanted sides. Trees near the rally likely played a part in obscuring the shooter from at least one team assigned to detect and neutralize would-be snipers.

The Secret Service is responsible for the overall coordination of security measures during an event. The agency’s director said it tasked local law enforcement with securing the building from which Crooks allegedly opened fire and that officers failed to prevent him from accessing the roof.

The Secret Service declined to comment when asked whether the slant of the roof or the trees would have impacted the teams’ ability to respond.

The Post’s assessments were reviewed and corroborated by three former law enforcement officials, including two retired snipers and a former Secret Service agent, as well as a former marine sniper.

The Post’s 3D model established that both units may have been hampered by the pitch of the building’s roof where Crooks was found, which rises roughly 3.5 ft from its exterior walls to its peak. According to the analysis, which placed a camera at the eye view of the teams, Crooks would likely not have been visible as he crawled up the roof to take his final shooting position. The Post’s reconstruction shows that the northernmost Secret Service countersniper team closest to the suspect — slightly more than 400 feet away and atop an approximately 23 foot tall barn — may have further struggled to see him because of two trees located between them.

The second countersniper team, located roughly 550 feet from the shooter, while farther away, could have had a less obstructed view, according to The Post’s reconstruction, because they were positioned slightly to the west and the trees may not have been in their line of sight.

Countersniper teams commonly scan for threats with binoculars, which offer a wider field of vision than a rifle optic, said Jason Lawless, a retired officer who worked as a sniper with the Tulsa Police Department’s Special Operations Team. But about two minutes before gunshots were fired, the northernmost team had already moved to their rifle positions, suggesting they were attuned to a potential threat at that point. It’s unclear exactly when Crooks first became visible to Secret Service countersnipers.

“If they’re on scope, they’ve been notified about something,” Lawless said. As Crooks fired his first shots, one of the countersnipers on the northernmost team flinched, he said, took his eye away from the scope, and reset his position.

The southernmost countersniper team, which can be seen in earlier images facing south, appeared to reorient northward before Crooks allegedly fired, suggesting that they were also aware of a threat.

The two teams’ positions on the barn roofs sat between approximately five and eight feet higher than the rooftop from which Crooks allegedly fired from. This meant that both teams were likely not high enough to see Crooks as he crawled up the other side of the roof, The Post’s model showed.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the shooting said the sloped roof could have created a visual block to the countersnipers. The countersniper who killed Crooks had him in his sights for some moments trying to assess whether he had a gun and was a threat and then shot him seconds after Crooks fired, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity amid an ongoing investigation.

Authorities have not said which member of Trump’s protection team shot and killed the gunman.

How Crooks scaled the roof of a nearby building, over 400 feet away from where Trump was speaking without being stopped by law enforcement, is under active investigation.

Aerial footage verified by The Post showed his body was located about 40 feet from the eastern edge of the building, which looks out on a parking lot. A few feet from him was a rifle, and farther down the roof an object that resembled a bag.

The Post’s 3D reconstruction shows that while there are trees in between the shooter and one of the secret service teams — which would have offered him concealment, according to Lawless and the other experts — the view between the shooter and the podium where Trump was standing was largely unimpeded.

Aerial footage showed a ladder leaning against a structure connected to the building Crooks allegedly fired from, where there are also air conditioning units. It’s unclear how the shooter reached the roof of the building, which at its lowest point is just over 13 feet high.

While the countersniper teams would have had difficulty seeing Crooks while he was on the far side of the roof, onlookers outside of the rally were able to easily spot him before the first gunfire, raising questions about the effectiveness of nearby local law enforcement patrols.

Multiple videos filmed by attendees outside the rally’s perimeter and verified by The Post reveal their attempts to alert law enforcement to a person on the roof who they thought might be armed. Police officers in the videos walk near the building from which Crooks fired. One video verified by The Post shows people calling out to officers that there was a man on the roof at least 86 seconds before the first shots were fired at 6:11 p.m. The camera zooms in to show him lying on his stomach.

“There should have been police officers in the vicinity who could have either denied him access to start with, or instantly respond to the call,” said Derrick Bartlett, a retired Fort Lauderdale Police Department SWAT sniper and president of the American Sniper Association. “So there was a hole in the security.”

At 6:11 p.m., gunfire crackled the air.

Two audio experts — Rob Maher of Montana State University and Steven Beck of Beck Audio Forensics — counted a total of 10 gunshots after analyzing verified footage of the assassination attempt and law enforcement response that followed. The first eight had similar audio characteristics and were fired in six seconds. They were followed immediately by a shot from a different location, they said, and, 16 seconds after the shooting began, by a final shot. These last two gunshots had different acoustic signatures from the previous ones, suggesting a security response. Both Maher and Beck cautioned that audio analysis alone could not determine the exact source of these gunshots.

On Tuesday, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said that local police were responsible for securing the building’s perimeter and that officers were inside when Crooks was on the roof . Part of the reason the agency didn’t request an officer on top, she said, was over safety concerns for someone standing on an angled roof.

The Post’s analysis shows the countersniper teams were positioned on steeper roofs.

On July 14, the day after the shooting, President Biden ordered an independent review of the incident. In a statement, Cheatle said her agency is “working with all involved federal, state and local agencies to understand what happened, how it happened, and how we can prevent an incident like this from ever taking place again.”

Carol Leonnig, Joyce Sohyun Lee and Kevin Uhrmacher contributed to this report.

Methodology

To build a 3D model of the rally site in Butler, Pa., The Post examined videos, photographs, satellite imagery, and lidar data of the location. Thomas Bordeaux, a graduate student at Georgia Tech’s School of Architecture, provided The Post with the lidar data, which The Post verified as being from the United States Geological Survey. The dimensions of permanent buildings on the site, including the structures on which the shooter and the USSS were positioned, were calculated using satellite measurements and lidar data. This data was processed in QGIS to calculate the height of building walls and the pitch of their roofs. The resulting figures were cross referenced with photographs of the buildings to arrive at their final representation. Temporary structures at the scene like the bleachers and stage were modeled by analyzing their features from multiple perspectives in videos and photographs to understand their scale in relationship to measurable objects in the scene.

The two trees south of the shooter were measured using lidar data referenced with analysis of images and videos; using these dimensions, The Post scaled a commercially built 3D model of the trees within the scene. The trees were selected to best represent the general density of the leaves and branches, but they are not a precise reconstruction of the foliage.

Trump rally shooting

The shooter: The FBI named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa., who is now dead, as the gunman. Federal investigators determined that the rifle used was legally purchased by the gunman’s father in 2013, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

Victims: The man killed at the rally was Corey Comperatore , a married father of two daughters who Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said died trying to protect his family. The two rally attendees who were critically injured were identified as David Dutch and James Copenhaver.

Layout of shooting site: The Washington Post built a 3D model of the site of the attempted assassination at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania based on more than 40 videos and photos. The Post’s analysis found that two Secret Service countersniper teams may not have been able to see the shooter at first.

Secret Service: Growing evidence that law enforcement were made aware of the shooter before he opened fire has put the Secret Service under pressure to explain what analysts have described as a major security failure .

Online conspiracy theories: A torrent of unsubstantiated theories flooded social media and other channels, fueling false and dueling narratives .
