Why a ‘flying boat’ has taken to the skies above north and north-east

A Catalina flying boat has been spotted flying over Aberdeen.

Catalina flying over Aberdeen

A Second World War ‘flying boat’ has taken to the skies in honour of a 104-year-old Aberdeen pilot.

Locals across the north-east were treated to a rare sighting of a Catalina flying boat soaring over Aberdeen yesterday.

The flight formed part of a ceremonial flypast to honour the exceptional bravery of Flight Lieutenant John Cruickshank, Britain’s last surviving Victoria Cross holder.

Departing from the Imperial War Museum Duxford, the aircraft flew over various RAF Coastal Command bases before landing in Mr Cruikshank’s hometown of Aberdeen on Wednesday.

David Legg Crew Chief and Editor The Catalina News, David Barlow Pilot, Jeff Boyling Pilot, Organiser of Operation Shetland and John Harmsworth Pilot, Humphrey Trusswell Ground crew.

From there, the experienced crew headed north to Sumburgh Shetland to conduct a ceremonial flypast over both Lerwick New Cemetery and Sullom Voe.

The Catalina is currently stationed in Shetland as the crew waits for weather conditions to improve.

Flypast in honour of Victoria Cross recipients

The flight marks the first stage of a five-day journey across the UK to commemorate the 80th anniversary of two Victoria Crosses being awarded to Catalina Pilots.

The aircraft, owned by Catalina Aircraft Limited (CAL) and operated by Plane Sailing Air Displays Ltd (PSADL), is the only one in operation outside of America.

Highlanders will have the chance to catch a rare glimpse of the unique aircraft as it heads south, flying over RAF Coastal Command stations in Wick, Invergordon, Alness, Inverness and Oban before returning to Duxford.

Jeff Boyling, dressed in his flying suit, at the helm of the Catalina flying boat.

The landmark flight was organised to mark the veteran’s heroic actions on July 17, 1944 as he flew a Catalina of 210 Squadron RAF out of Sullom Voe to sink a German U-boat.

During the operation, Flight Lieutenant Cruickshank – who was just 24 at the time – was injured more than 70 times as the navigator was killed.

Despite suffering serious lung injuries and 10 penetrating wounds to his lower limbs, he safely flew the aircraft back to Shetland.

Victoria Cross recipient dies following heroic flight

The second Victoria Cross was awarded to Flt Lt David Hornell for his heroic actions during the Second World War.

On June 24, 1944, the 162 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force pilot took off from Wick alongside seven comrades onboard a Catalina on an anti-submarine patrol.

After almost 10 hours in the air, the crew spotted and attacked a German submarine, leaving their aircraft severely wounded and on fire.

Despite the desperate situation unfolding around them, Mr Cruickshank managed to land the aircraft on a heavy swell.

After more than 21 hours, the crew were rescued, however, the pilot died a short time later.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross in honour of his valour.

Catalina 545: Best Full-Size Cruiser Over 55 Feet

  • By Herb McCormick
  • Updated: December 9, 2019

Catalina 545

So here come the Big Boys: the four finalists in the BOTY Class of 2020 vying for the title of “Mightiest Monohull” of them all. It would not be a cut-and-dry choice, however, as all four contestants were so radically different from one another.

Unfortunately, due to the extreme and unusual weather during the sea-trials portion of the contest (see “A Little Bit of Everything,” page 67), the yacht with perhaps the greatest sailing potential—the Beneteau First Yacht 53—went untested on the water. The 53 is a departure for Beneteau, which is betting big on attracting the performance-cruising segment of the market. So the judges were left to ponder the boat’s fate based on their dockside inspections.

Beneteau First Yacht 53

It received high marks. Judge Ed Sherman said: “This is a very interesting boat. It’s actually an outlier in terms of the electrical system in that it’s still using 12 volts, while almost everyone else seems to be evolving to 24 volts. There’s some real innovation happening here. They get kudos for the in-house digital-switching control system they’ve designed, which is pretty slick and enables the owner to control the system with their cellphone, or even remotely via the internet with the onboard Wi-Fi.”

Hanse 675

Like the Beneteau, the year’s largest entry, the Hanse 675, comes with a price tag of over $1 million, a major topic of discussion in the final deliberations for the class. And while the judges did get aboard the boat for a test sail, the conditions were so calm that, again, decisions were based largely on the dockside visit. And it also generated positive reviews.

“Mechanically, the systems were very well-done,” judge Ralph Naranjo said. “The idea of using hydraulics for the anchor windlass was great, though I thought the capstan and chain size were quite small. Under sail, we didn’t have a fair evaluation because of lack of wind. But the sails, running rigging and so on were splendid. Under power she did very well, making better than 10 knots at the high end. And she backed down well either way.”

Bavaria C57

The second of two Bavarias to be introduced in the United States this year was the stout C57. “In terms of installations, the systems are very similar to the C50,” Sherman said. “I’d say Bavarias in general have achieved a point in their construction expertise where they’re on par with Groupe Beneteau boats—they’re all in the same league in terms of the craftsmanship it takes to install commonly requested marine systems.” Naranjo added, “They’ve done an interesting thing with the 57, as they have several different draft versions from which to choose, and the engineering is solid in that they change the ballast with the different draft options.”

That left the 56-plus-foot Catalina 545 , which—spoiler alert—not only was named Best Full-Size Cruiser Over 55 Feet , it also was named the overall Boat of the Year .

“I liked it as soon as I got on it,” judge Dan Spurr said. “I like the looks of it. I like the cockpit layout. The designer and builder, Gerry Douglas, did an excellent job explaining how he put the boat together and the choices that he made. I was impressed by the overall layout abovedecks and below. We didn’t have a ton of wind when we sailed it, but it acquitted itself nicely. It seemed like a pretty straightforward rig that my wife and I could handle pretty comfortably. In other words, it wasn’t complicated. Pricewise, in this category, it was in the same range as the Bavaria but considerably less than the Beneteau or Hanse, which I think is important. It represents good value. It’s a simple boat but one that’s handsome and well-thought-out.”

“The little things did it for me,” Sherman said. “The rigid stainless-steel handrails and the great toe rail. Really chunky stuff. I love the drain down the side of the deck. It was slippery in pretty light air. I mean, we got it up to 5 or 6 knots without any effort at all. I really loved the interior layout too. That forward stateroom with the little daybed was great. And the furniture in the main saloon is solid wood, not laminated stuff. It’s seemingly a minor thing, but it’s actually pretty major in terms of maintaining the value of the boat down the line.”

Many decades ago, Catalina Yachts was launched with the name of the prominent island off the coast where the company was founded. Fittingly, the Catalina 545, the latest and perhaps greatest of all the models that came before it, is an island unto itself.

Two women to attempt swim across Cook Inlet

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Shannon Titzel and Jordan Iverson are attempting to be the first women to ever swim across Cook Inlet.

The duo said they plan to make the frigid swim from Point McKenzie to the small boat harbor in Anchorage next Wednesday.

“I’ve been looking at this water every day, and I’m just like, man, I need to swim that,” Titzel said.

Iverson recently made headlines when she joined an exclusive list of just over 300 people who have accomplished the triple crown of open-water swimming: the 20 Bridges Swim in Manhattan, the Catalina Channel in California, and the English Channel, which separates England and France. Iverson said she is only the second Alaskan to join that list, behind William Schulz, who accomplished the feat in 2018.

For the last six months, Titzel has been planning and training for the roughly six-mile swim, which will be longer than the actual three-mile distance from Point Mackenzie to the Anchorage harbor due to the current, which will force them to swim in a loop.

Every week, Titzel spends around seven hours practicing, in addition to spending time in a cold bath to help get her body ready for the frigid water.

“We are going to try it in swimsuits,” Titzel said. “In the open water swimming world — so some of the big swims like the English Channel and Catalina and all that — it’s not technically a legit swim — or an ‘official swim’ I should say — unless you do it without a wetsuit.”

The two are hoping to complete the swim in 90 minutes.

“My biggest concern, to be honest, is the navigation,” Titzel said. “So we have a plan and I think it’s a really good plan, but you’re not going to know until you get out there ... the cold and the dark in the water and stuff are just things to deal with. But, the navigation is the big thing.”

Both Titzel and Iverson will be followed by a boat, they said, which will hold a rescue swimmer and Titzel’s husband.

Titzel said a similar route was accomplished back in 2004 by two men, Chris Hodel and Bob Kaufman. Titzel told Alaska’s News Source that Hodel has been super encouraging in both Titzel’s and Iverson’s attempts.
