Dear all, I want to create a detailed building information model for a 13 - 15 meter catamaran that is capable of being CNC cut and assembled. I need some help finding plans I can use as a basis of design. Specifically, I need the hull profile information. Section cuts through the hull will give me the ideal contours for a boat of this size. Can someone help? After weeks of searching, I still cannot find these online. For now, this is merely an exercise in my 3d modeling capability. I'd like to share my drawing work with the forum if I can get some assistance to start off. There are future possibilities I am also considering. I'm an experienced Architect & construction designer with a strong background in computer aided design. Once I've modeled the boat in 3d, I would like to flatten the various parts and create plans for the individual boat parts to be CNC cut. I would like to build a small scale model first (1:2o or perhaps 1:10) with the ultimate goal of building the boat full scale.

This is a very simple catamaran which, if you are interested, I can give you a lot of information. It is not a spectacular boat but it can help you in your first steps with boats. LOA = 16 m, Lbp = 14.6 m
Thanks I really appreciate it. The hull lines for the motor cat you've provided are not quite what i'm looking for. I'm specifically looking for the hull lines for a 14m catamaran sail boat. I guess there is some standard for these contours especially the area below the waterline. Check the attached document as well if anyone is interested in this.

I'm sorry, you never specified that it was a sailing catamaran. I thought that to carry out your purposes, " For now, this is merely an exercise in my 3d modeling capability ", any model was valid. Apparently, you have different purposes than, in addition to, to practice with 3D models. The better you clarify what you are really looking for, the better someone can help you.
Hi all, Here's an example of what kind of information I need to get started. Optimising Hull Lines for Performance https://www.graingerdesigns.net/the-lab/optimising-hull-lines-for-performance/ The boat shown here is a 8.5m cat sailboat. I'm looking for something a bit larger in the 14m range. Also, the images only show one of the hull profiles. I'd like profile lines for the entire boat. I will post some other images I've found online showing profile lines for smaller boats. I still cannot find any 14m hull lines. Can anyone help?

Here are some other hull lines I've found online. Hope this is useful to anyone else looking for this information. Thanks!

You could take any of those boats and scaleb the lines to get the desired length. Since it is only a 3D modeling exercise, you do not have to worry about anything else. You could even make a mix of 2 or 3 of those models to get the one you are looking for.
Thanks Tansl, I'd like to make the boat drawings accurate for the 14m size. Perhaps one day I will develop this into something worth building full scale. The more accurate I can draw the boat, the more I will learn about the boat design.
Maybe it does not look like it but I would like to help you. If you do not find what you want on the Internet I could draw a lines plan, strictly following your instructions, which would help you to make the 3D model. Or, if you find something similar on the internet I can adapt it to your needs and fill in the information that you indicate you need for your work. I insist that starting from the shapes of a 10 m boat you can get the shapes of a boat of 14 m, with total accuracy.

Dolfiman, thanks so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. It's very interesting and probably a bit over my head at this point. I think this should work for modeling the basic hull shape. For the bridge deck and all of the stuff above the hull I can model this with a bit more creativity. Although, I'd like to learn more about understanding the center of gravity for the boat and the proper location of the mast. Are there any rules of thumb about this? Thanks again!

In complement to illustrate this first approach, my good friend Alain did some 3D views here attached of the hull V2 version with Multisurf (using fit for purpose ouput data in section 5. of the above file). To inspire you , some other examples of cata, more sport/day sailer oriented than the Saona 47 : - R/P 45 (Reichel-Pugh) : multihull http://reichel-pugh.com/tag/multihull/ - Dazcat 1295 : in this video, from 1:45 the launch, you can see the hulls from various angles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BZF4Udda5E - SIG 45 (VPLP design) : from 1:20 you can see the winward hull fully lifted

TOP 5 Best Yachts From 12 to 15 Meters (40-50 ft) in 2024

We are presenting topRik's 2023 selection of 12-15 m (40-50 ft) catamarans. Comparison of best vessels of this segment in terms of size, space, price, different cons and pros and many more!

Fountaine Pajot MY5

  • Brand: Fountaine Pajot
  • Hull type: Catamaran
  • Overall length, m: 12.9
  • Width, m: 6
  • Draft, m: 11
  • Displacement, t: 15.5
  • Water tanks, l: 450
  • Exterior design (Architect): Daniel Andrieu
  • Interior design: Pierangelo Andreani Studio
  • CE Certification: A
  • Engine, hp: 2 x 256
  • Option engine, hp: 2 x 364
  • Fuel tanks, l: 2 x 700

At the request of the shipyard Fountaine Pajot naval architect Daniel Andrieu and designers from Pierangelo Andreani Studio initially designed the MY5 marine catamaran exclusively as a power catamaran. Cat rightfully took its place in the line of motor yachts of the shipyard between MY 4.S and MY6. Like its older brother, MY5 (formerly MY 40) also collected a number of prestigious awards, one of which is “ Best Multihull Motor Yacht ” (up to 50 ft) by 2019 Asia Boating Awards.

It is a very stable boat, which makes it attractive for both family cruising and commercial cruising. The space of all decks is thoughtfully divided into zones of work, rest, and dining. Recreation options include the opportunity to sunbathe or swim with the whole family or in the company of friends - there is enough space for everyone.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Even the participants of the charter will comfortably accommodate on the foredeck area of 8 m², in the cockpit, saloon and flybridge of 16 m², not to mention the cabins.

It is from the bathing platform that the entrance to the cockpit opens from two sides: one is wide, through which you can load products, equipment and gear, the other is narrower.

In the cockpit there is just a huge L-shaped sofa, in front of which you can install an additional table assembled to organize a meal in the fresh air. This is convenient, since a wide entrance to the saloon opens from the cockpit, and the galley is located there immediately on the starboard side.

The cockpit also has excellent access to both engine rooms through large hatches. In the center there is a place for storing life rafts.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

In addition to stability, the catamaran is as safe as possible for both adults and children: wide side decks, stairs and flybridge are equipped with grab bars, as well as railings, ladder steps are wide and covered with non-slip material.

On the foredeck is a beautiful C-shaped sunbathing area with two full-size reclining sun loungers. In the center of this living room, you see a trapdoor that opens up to a huge locker where fenders and water sports equipment can fit.

While we are still at the foredeck, pay attention to the anchor, which can be controlled from all decks, including control panels in the saloon and on the flybridge.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The photo above clearly shows the sunroof, which protects those who are on the flybridge from the sun. Here all passengers of the cat can freely sit. For this, comfortable sofas and poufs are provided. It is equipped with a bar, refrigerator, ice maker and barbecue.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The control panel is placed on a small elevation, from where an almost 360-degree view opens. The helmsman can see all parts of the floats, the port side is visible through the gangway leading to the flybridge. The helm of MY5 looks like a car steering wheel, the tilt of which is adjustable. Instrument panels and equipment control are displayed here: engine diagnostics, throttle, joystick, multifunctional marine display, etc.

This is the working area of the flybridge in addition to the lounge and dining area. But there are places for family members or friends so that the helmsman does not feel lonely. A very social decision.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

The saloon is also conditionally divided into several zones. With wide sliding doors it can be combined with the cockpit, which significantly expands the usable area in addition to the 16 m² of the saloon itself.

At the starboard there is the kitchen area: you get a well-equipped galley with microwave or oven, gas hob and dishwasher. Opposite to it a large refrigerator with a freezer is installed. The seating area, or dining area, is slightly raised compared to the level of the galley. This opens up a wider view through panoramic windows around the perimeter.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

A long sofa on the port side with upholstered seats, backs and poufs and an armchair make up the living room. And together with the table, which is transformed with the help of an electric drive, upholstered furniture makes up a dining area, where 6 people can freely accommodate, and actually even more if desired.

And here is the working area of the saloon - the skipper can climb down here in bad weather. It is equipped with a full-fledged control panel, exactly the same as on the flybridge. Although, the overview of the entire catamaran is not as good - the stern is not visible.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Let's start the description of MY5’s the cabins by saying that they are two meters high, which is unusual for a 40-foot boat. The master cabin is just a small apartment with all the amenities that start with a double queen-size island bed. The porthole opposite the bed exceeds its width and has an opening part, so that the inhabitants are provided with natural light and fresh air.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Before getting into the main cabin, to which the entire port side is given, you have to go through the foyer, where the main electrical switchboard and a spot for a washing machine are located. The master cabin is equipped with plenty of storage space too.

A separate huge bathroom with an open shower overlooking the sea and a separate closed toilet - a layout that is almost never found on cats of this size.

Fountaine Pajot MY5

Depending on the choice of equipment, you can have MY5 with three or four cabins. In the case of a three-cabin configuration, the master cabin remains the same, and two cabins are equipped in the starboard float with a shared bathroom and a separate shower.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

  • Overall length, m: 13.94
  • Width, m: 7.7
  • Draft, m: 1. 2
  • Displacement, t: 14.7
  • Water tanks, l: 2 x 350
  • Exterior design (Architect): Berret-Racoupeau Design
  • Interior design: Berret-Racoupeau Design
  • Mainsail type: Fully battened
  • Jib type: Furling genoa
  • Mainsail area, m²: 77
  • Jib area, m²: 52
  • Engines, hp: 2 x 50
  • Option engines, hp: 2 x 60
  • Fuel tanks, l: 2 x 470

Sailing catamaran Tanna 47 from Fountaine Pajot replaced the Saona 47 - the new model in the old case proved to be so striking and effective that we gave it the fourth place in our rating.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

To the left and to the right along the side there are entrance ladders with wide comfortable steps. Between them there can be a platform, which is an optional element. It can be used to carry a dinghy or as a bathing area.

The layout of the cockpit differs little from its predecessor. The table on the port side can accommodate 8-10 people. A couple more vacationers can be accommodated on a sunbed on the port side or on a long sofa along the transom.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

A gas barbecue is very convenient on deck: you catch a fish and fry it right there, and the smells will be carried away by the wind. Of course, here you can fry not only fish, but also meat, vegetables, etc. Refrigerator and freezer are also an option, there are spots for them in the cockpit.

From the cockpit we rise to the helm station. From the control post you can enjoy an excellent overview of the entire catamaran, the nose of the left hull is slightly blocked, but you can navigate by the railing. And to see the stern, you will have to bend down, but this procedure does not cause discomfort.

The helm area and the sailing area on of Tanna 47 are separated, but the winches from are within easy reach, just behind the helm.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

The panel contains all the tools, the readings of which are important for the helmsman, additional to throttle controls, chartplotter , etc. The stoppers of all three winches are brought to one point. Below is a pocket for sheets and halyards.

The sailing equipment includes the classic genoa - Fountaine Pajot did not follow the new fashion for automation here either.

On the flybridge, manipulations with the sails do not threaten anyone if at this time they are located on one of plentiful sofas or sunbeds. There is room for a table and extra seats.

In the bow there is a large compartment for the anchor chain, where fenders can also be stored. On top of the hatch of this compartment and next to it, you can place several mats and organize a natural solarium.

There are also few changes in the saloon: the usual rounding of furniture, a luxurious corner sofa, a side ottoman, a sliding table - everything is very stylish and beautifully lit. Two more large skylights have been added to the panoramic glazing of the cabin.

A small hatch above the stove acts as a hood. The galley is equipped with all kitchen utensils. There are several refrigerators in the cabin. Above one of them is a large chartplotter, and the usual place of the navigator practically does not exist in this version.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

Three and four cabin versions are available. In the 3 cabin version, the master cabin is in the port float. The bed is really big, with access from three sides. In the transition to a full-fledged bathroom there is a wardrobe, shelves, work and dressing tables.

Aventura 14

The flagship of STGI Marine, the Aventura 14 motor catamaran holds the record for the number of cabins among 44-foot yachts - there are six of them. At the same time, the catamaran has seaworthy characteristics for long-distance, almost oceanic crossings at a maximum speed of 22 knots, which can be developed by the Yanmar 2x400 hp engines installed on it. At a cruising speed of 16 knots, the cruising range can reach 1,300 nautical miles.

But in the engine compartment of the yacht, you can put engines with a power of 550 hp, then the cat will develop a cruising speed of up to 18 knots, and a maximum speed of up to 27. In two tanks plus one additional tank Aventura 14 can carry 1.5 + 1.5 + 1 = whopping 4 tons of fuel.

Aventura 14

Nova Luxe took a direct part in the creation of the vessel, offering to make it as environmentally friendly as possible. To do this, they have developed a powerful solar battery specifically for this model to be placed on the flybridge. Its capacity (more than 7 kW/h) will fully serve the needs of passengers. And additional electrical equipment will reduce the use of diesel engines on sunny days.

With such high performance, passengers and crew are provided with incredible comfort to work, rest and travel, which is the hallmark of the Aventura brand .

Aventura 14

A very wide hydraulic platform at the stern accommodates several motorboats, rafts or jet skis. There is also a spacious aft garage for a pair of folding bikes or equipment for diving, hunting or fishing.

There is a table in the cockpit, which can comfortably accommodate up to 16 people on soft sofas and side benches or chairs. And since the saloon and cockpit are separated by wide sliding doors, you get a huge common space, which is also located on the same level.

Aventura 14

Huge 26 m² flybridge has its own kitchen area, which includes a grill, sink and a compact refrigerator for drinks, ice cream and fruits. The dining area, that serves also as a relaxation area or a living room, includes a large table and sofas with backs, surrounding the table from 3 sides.

Aventura 14

A huge space below the working area can be equipped with a solarium or a SPA with a jacuzzi, some place gym equipment there. Of course, with a jacuzzi filled with water, you cannot develop maximum speed, after all, the additional weight is almost 3 tons.

Aventura 14

The working area includes a control post, as well as a comfortable seat in front of it for several people, the height of which is adjustable. The height of the steering wheel itself, made in the form of an automobile steering wheel, is regulated in the same way. The instrument panel displays the performance indicators of the equipment and its control elements, as well as a high-quality marine display with a chartplotter.

Aventura 14

The spacious saloon with electric table for 12 people has a full galley with all the equipment, a large double-door refrigerator with a large freezer, a wine cabinet, a microwave, a dishwasher and a washing machine, etc.

The working area is a control post, the dashboard of which is located behind the steering wheel and to the right of it. All the controls of the Aventura 14 are placed here – the automation of the yacht’s management is so advanced, that this vessel can be considered a “smart yacht” by analogy with a “smart home”.

In general, the motorboat seems as comfortable as a compact mansion on the water can be. This feeling intensifies when you go below deck and find that you can straighten up freely, straighten your shoulders, and there is still enough space above your head.

We have already said that the cat is designed for 6 cabins if you are going to use it for charters. But if you are looking to buy an Aventura 14 catamaran for personal use, you will definitely choose the option with a master cabin and 2, 3 or 4 guest cabins, depending on the composition of the family and the number of close friends you can invite on a cruise.

The master cabin will then take up the entire float and house a huge island double bed, table, sofa, lots of closets, shelves and hidden lockers. Of course, a separate bathroom with a rain shower, toilet and a furnished hallway.

Aventura 14

Private bathrooms in guest cabins differ from the master cabin only in size.

Every time you look at the new premises of Aventura 14, you really can’t tell whether you are cruising on a 44-foot power catamaran or picking a new house for permanent residence.

Of course, when ranking the best catamarans up to 15 meters in length, we could not help but place the Excess 15 fully electric cruising sailing catamaran in second place. This is a new brand of catamarans from Beneteau-Lagoon-Janneau, focused on performance, while having all the properties of a cruising catamaran, full habitability and build quality from a major manufacturer.

Excess 15

The catamaran is equipped with electric engines instead of diesel ones. It has become a kind of research laboratory used to study the effect of installing electric motors on serial yachts.

The boat has a very spacious saloon with open access to the cockpit through wide sliding doors. In this case, one of the tables in the L-shaped galley can serve as a bar in the cockpit. This allows you to combine two zones into a single space for organizing mass entertainment with refreshments and dancing.

In the saloon, a large soft sofa goes around the table on three sides, where up to 12 people can fit. The galley is equipped with all the most necessary kitchen equipment - stove, oven, refrigerator, etc. Around the entire perimeter of the cabin there is glazing that provides excellent visibility and natural light, and opening transoms in them provide natural ventilation.

Excess 15

The cockpit also has barbecue facilities and a fridge for drinks and ice cream. In the cockpit there are sofas with backs, one of which goes around the table on both sides, the other is on the transom, and the sofa opposite the table has a spacious locker.

Drop-down seats in front of the helms and a small bimini over the helmsman's head have already become a hallmark of this range. The helms with a control panel are located in the cockpit on both sides of the catamaran. The panel contains the tools to manage the equipment, in particular, electric motors, as well as control drives for some equipment and devices such as an autopilot and a thruster.

To the left and right of the steering wheels is the engine control knob. Near the steering wheels there are manual or electric winches, at the choice of the buyer. Above the cabin and part of the cockpit there is a retractable roof - also a trademark of the line. An automatic jib is included as standard.

Excess 15

An excellent view opens up from the helmsman's seat, in particular, due to the fact that the saloon is completely glazed and through it the bow of the catamaran is perfectly visible. When maneuvering, the helmsman does not have to crouch or stretch his neck - he has a full view of both floats both in the stern and in the bow.

Naval architects and designers abandoned the idea of flybridge. But on the foredeck, you can equip a large sunbathing area using a deck and two trampolines.

You get fairly roomy, but not overbearing, guest cabins fore and aft of the same float, each with its own porthole, large double bed and bathroom.

The master cabin completely occupies one of the hulls and is divided into bedroom, living room and bath areas. In the recreation area you will find a large island double bed, two portholes, shelves. Further in the corridor there are cupboards, sofas, several tables. And in the other part there is a huge bathroom that contains everything that is required for hygiene and water procedures: a shower, a washbasin, a latrine, etc.

If desired, you can choose a package for 4 cabins or with a separate cabin for the skipper in the bow of the vessel.

Under the engines, Excess 14 goes very quietly. And when sailing, the electric catamaran can recuperate water energy.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

  • Brand: Fountain Pajot
  • Overall length, m: 14
  • Width, m: 6.6
  • Draft, m: 1.1
  • Displacement, t: 16.3
  • Air draft, m: 4.25
  • Exterior design (Architect): Andrieu Yacht Design
  • Interior design: Andreani Design
  • Engines: IPS 500 Volvo 2 x 380
  • Option engines: IPS 650 Volvo 2 x 480
  • Fuel tanks l: 2 x 1000

The MY6 (formerly MY44) motor cruising catamaran is still one of the world leaders in the 13.4 m (44 ft) double hull boat market. Shipyard Fountaine Pajot Motor Yachts received all the most prestigious awards for this cat, including “Best Multihull Power Yacht”, “European Power Boat of the Year” and “Best Passagemaker”.

Daniel Andrieu and Pierangelo Andreani once again demonstrated their engineering and creative potential, as a result of which the catamaran received excellent seaworthiness and unique living spaces.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The yacht is stable with a good draft (1.3 m), behaves confidently even at a speed of 25 knots.

With a length of 13.6 m and a beam of 6.5 m, there are 3 or 4 double cabins with three bathrooms, a spacious cockpit, company cabins, a flybridge, a foredeck solarium and a bathing platform. At the same time, as is customary in Fountaine Pajot’s catamarans, the entire space is divided into zones - working, relaxing, dining, kitchen, etc.

In the bow there are several spacious lockers where fenders and ropes can be stored. Anchor and anchor winch can be controlled using a remote control or from one of the control stations located in the saloon and on the flybridge.

Foredeck is transformed into a great place for a vacation - a sunbathing area or an evening bar - with reclining loungers and a portable table with recesses for bottles and glasses.

We climb the flybridge stairs with railings and wide steps. Here the distribution of zones is thought out to the smallest detail. Recreation area is also a dining area, with comfortable sofas and a large built-in table, a refrigerator for drinks and ice cream.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Another very large folding sofa - a real rookery - is located on the port side. Friends or family members resting here will brighten up the skipper's stay at the helm, which has the shape of a steering wheel.

The working area is located on the starboard side, directly opposite this huge sofa. The control post is equipped with a very comfortable wide chair.

The control panel contains all the main instruments, as well as the controls for all helmsman actions, and a multifunctional marine display. The height of the steering wheel is adjustable. Management is simplified using the joystick.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

All this splendor is protected by a sun-protection curtain on the roof, which can be moved if you want to sunbathe.

The same control post is located in the cabin. Huge portholes located around the perimeter provide natural light and excellent visibility. The portholes have opening parts that allow you to ventilate the cabin.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Incredibly large space, although filled with excellent upholstered furniture, leaves a lot of room for free movement. At the table-transformer, 10 people can fit without constraining each other. This table, if desired, can easily be converted into a coffee, dining or even an extra bed.

Corners of the table and galley furniture are rounded for safety. The galley is located on the port side - despite its compactness, it has all the necessary kitchen equipment, including a stove, refrigerator, etc.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

As you can see in the top photo, a wide sliding door opens from the saloon to the cockpit. This combines them into a single space, which allows you to throw grand parties with a large number of guests, turning one of the galley tables into a bar counter.

In the cockpit there is a comfortable soft sofa with lockers under the seats; a portable table can be placed here.

There is also a locker with a life raft, a gas cylinder and necks for refueling the tanks. Fresh water is connected to the shower in the cockpit.

Under the cockpit hatches there is a capacious engine compartment, which provides free access to engines and other technical equipment.

Using the wide steps from the cockpit you get to stationary platform, a real personal beach spot with an area of 9 m². The cockpit floor and platform are covered with natural teak.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

Maestro version includes a master suite that is completely dedicated to the owner. Surprisingly spacious, it has a real island bed, a table, an extra sofa and wardrobes for storing clothes and other things.

A huge porthole with a "window" provides the cabin with fresh air and natural light. The height of all the rooms of the catamaran MY6 is striking - even a regular cabin’s ceiling is at least 2 meters high.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The master cabin has a private bathroom and toilet. Two double guest cabins located in another float are also provided with separate bathrooms with toilets.

There is a choice of 4-cabin charter version, two in each float, with shared bathrooms for each couple.

Fountaine Pajot MY6

The MY6 power catamaran is designed exclusively for IPS systems and has a cruising range of up to 1,000 miles. Safety and comfort on long journeys are provided for both passengers and crew of this magnificent vessel.

Her very luminous, contemporary interior, open to the outside world, and her new-generation rig promise some beautiful sailing and a feeling of pleasure at sea.

With an area of 125 m² (1,345 sq ft) and her 25-meter (82’) high mast, the Excess 15 is the largest in the new Bénéteau Group family.

In addition to her large spaces, this boat has twin helm stations, located at the after end of each hull, which are designed to increase the pleasure of sailing.

As for the interior, there’s a huge raised saloon/dining area with a 360° view of the sea through non-smoked bay windows. Depending on the desired space, you can choose between a three, four or even six double cabin version. The catamaran’s 8-meter (26’3”) beam offers a cockpit large enough to accommodate a beautiful table, around which eight people can easily sit.

Her unique, balanced and seductive lines embody the spirit of Excess while combining this with the comfort of a large cruising catamaran.

charter programs & tax advantages

This catamaran is immediately available for purchase and can be placed in a charter fleet to take advantage of the 2020 tax program before the end of the year! It is the LEAST EXPENSIVE way to own a yacht!

A yacht or boat business is a fairly simple concept and is structured much like any other for profit business. By placing a yacht into a corporation (usually an LLC) and operating it actively for profit, either directly or through a third party management company, the owner is able to generate substantial tax advantages that further offset the cost of ownership.

For more than 30 years, we have been a part of the catamaran community and created Catamaran Guru™ to encourage and educate all the aspiring sailing out there. We understand the dream of traveling the world by catamaran and created a one-stop-shop to make that dream a reality for you.

Excess 15 Details

The Excess 15 is the flagship of the Excess line of catamarans. Measuring 48’5” LOA, its beam is 26’4”, and draft is 4’7”. This is a big catamaran, capable of sleeping up to 14 people in its optional six-cabin layout.

Like all Excess catamarans, the Excess 15 is intended to make performance a priority on the modern cruising catamaran. Based on a hull shared with the Lagoon 50, the builder shaved a full ton of weight out of the boat, and in light air, that is quite noticeable. Where other cats are motoring in light air, the Excess 15 continues sailing, using its asymmetrical spinnaker or Code 0 to harness the breeze.

Group Beneteau created the Excess brand to showcase its innovation in building boats that sailors will love to sail while also providing the benefits and comfortable accommodations of a modern cruising catamaran. The Excess 15 does this particularly well and will prove a popular alternative for cruisers who need the space and accommodations of a big catamaran.

There are two aft helm stations, with unrestricted visibility forward over wide side decks, much like sailing a monohull. The lack of window tinting gives the person at either helm great visibility across the saloon to the other side of the boat. Any small blind spot can be eliminated by leaning across the helm seat a few inches. Great sight lines were important design criterion for the Excess line.

As the primary helm, the starboard station has all halyards and sheets led aft, with Harken winches at both helms to assist in raising and unfurling the sail and adjust the sheets. The builder includes dedicated bags to hold the jumble of lines that normally clutter the cockpit and helm.

To provide the highest degree of connection between sails and rudders, the steering system uses Dyneema lines as steering cables to provide a high level of feedback at the wheel. One will be able to feel developing weather helm and adjust sails or course accordingly.

There are full engine instrumentation and navigation modules at each helm station, and a small bimini over each helm. The helms can be enclosed as well.

The Excess 15 comes in three configurations: a three-cabin layout with three heads (with separate showers), a four-cabin layout with four heads (with separate showers), and a six-cabin layout with six heads (showers are part of the head). Clearly the layout with three cabins will be the owner version of this boat.

The standard boat has two water tanks, each with a capacity of 63 gallons. There is a 32-gallon holding tank in each hull. And the Excess 15 has two aluminum fuel tanks that each hold 137 gallons of fuel for the pair of 57hp Yanmar 4JH57 saildrives.

The Excess 15 cockpit and interior offer enormous living spaces, light and bright because of the builder’s choice of light fabric, honey-colored furniture, white wall covering, and sand plywood flooring. The many windows and opening hatches provide excellent ventilation.

The saloon is much like a large living room, with an aft-facing galley, to satisfy any gourmet chef, with stainless-steel appliances and plenty of storage. Visibility in the saloon is fully 360 degrees. A large saloon table, surrounded by a large L-shaped settee and moveable bench seat, is electrically raised and lowered to serve as coffee table during the day and then raise and unfold when it needs to be a dining table for a large party.

Lockers and drawers are plentiful around the boat and in all staterooms.

The starboard hull is the master stateroom, and the full length of the interior functions as a master suite, including his and her’s vanities and sinks. A huge forward shower is also an exceptional feature on this catamaran.

There are many options for the Excess 15 and performance packages to improve its sailing capabilities, especially in light air. The Pulse Line pack includes a taller mast for greater sail area, a squared-off mainsail and self-tacking jib in a higher quality gray, tri-radial sail material. The package also equips the boat with all deck hardware for a spinnaker pole and hardware/furler for a Code 0.

Also included with this optional package are bright orange composite steering wheels, and special hull graphics.

The benefits of the Pulse Line pack mean one can shut down the engine sooner or continue sailing even in light air. And the boat will look more like a boat set up for racing...while those aboard enjoy life on a luxurious modern catamaran.

The Excess 15, especially with the hull graphics and colorful trim, will turn heads as she sails past slower cats and monohulls. She is lighter and more slippery than her Lagoon counterpart. And while the competent Lagoon will safely take you anywhere in the world at 6-7 knots, the Excess 15 will be a rocket ship by comparison.

And that is the essence of the Excess line. Be immoderate.

Description

With an area of 125 m² (1,345 sq ft) and her 25-meter (82’) high mast, the Excess 15 is the largest in the new Bénéteau Group family. In addition to her large spaces, this boat has twin helm stations, located at the after end of each hull, which are designed to increase the pleasure of sailing. As for the interior, there’s a huge raised saloon/dining area with a 360° view of the sea through non-smoked bay windows. Depending on the desired space, you can choose between a three, four or even six double cabin version. The catamaran's 8-meter (26’3”) beam offers a cockpit large enough to accommodate a beautiful table, around which eight people can easily sit.

I'm interested in buying this catamaran  but have questions

There are many ways to buy a catamaran and the procedure varies between manufacturers. It's a process that takes time and you should not be afraid of starting talks with the manufacturer.

Here are some common questions you might have:

Can I afford it?  Talk to the manufacturer and they can advise you on financing options.

Can I sail it?  Arrange a test sail with the manufacturer, or ask them directly what kind of support and education they offer for boat buyers.

If you need anything else, be it more details , an introduction to the manufacturer , a shipyard visit , a  test sail , or help with  customatization,  let us know on the Help  M e page after clicking below and we’ll help you take the next step.

If you’ve spent many a pleasant weekend chartering or helming a cruising catamaran on the open sea, perhaps, just like me, you’ve started thinking about buying your own cruising catamaran . However, purchasing a cruising catamaran is no small decision; it’s essential to research the range of models to decide which will be best for you.

Some of the best catamarans for cruising are the Sunreef 60, the Leopard 45, the Saona 46, the Manta 42, and the Antares 44i. A good cruising catamaran offers plenty of space, extended range and is optimized for comfort and safety. A cruiser is slower and less exciting to sail than a performance cat.

If you would like to own a catamaran, but your budget doesn’t stretch to purchasing a new one, look for a used, older model. You should also think about whether you’d prefer a power or sailing catamaran. This article explores the best cruising catamarans on the market and gives you an insight into what model will work best for your circumstances.

Sunreef 60 (Power/Sail)

The Sunreef 60 is the epitome of luxury. It offers both powerful sailing performance and, with 60 feet (18.3 meters) in length, has an abundance of amenities for passengers.

The Sunreef 60 has been commended by several industry experts, including SailWorld and YachtingWorld . Some of the best features of the Sunreef 60 include :

  • A large semi-open saloon that leads into the aft cockpit, the main deck, and the dining space
  • An aft hydraulic platform that can be used for water sports and sunbathing
  • A large flybridge that can house a pool, bar, and dining area
  • An aft garage that can be used as extra storage space
  • The ability to host up to 12 guests, with the owner’s cabin offering a spectacular front view

The Sunreef 60’s sailing specifications are equally impressive. Some of the catamaran’s specs include:

Power version:

  • An advanced navigation system that allows the Sunreef 60 to operate both with and without a crew
  • A fuel capacity of 1585.03 gallons (6000 liters)
  • A water capacity of 211.34 gallons (800 liters)
  • A draft of 5.90 feet (1.80 meters)

Sail version:

  • A fuel capacity of 463 gallons (1750 liters)
  • 2*110HP Engines

In 2020, Sunreef launched a variation of the Sunreef 60 – the 60 Sunreef Power Eco . This catamaran is equipped with a state-of-the-art solar power system and wind generators. Eco-responsible finishing materials have been used to construct several parts of the catamaran.

Both the Sunreef 60 and the eco version are excellent sailing crafts built for luxurious, long-distance cruises. They are still in production, so you can order a new vessel from Sunreef 60 . Used Sunreef 60s can be found on TheYachtMarket.com .

As the Sunreef 60 is such a high-end vessel, be prepared to pay a premium price for one – new or used.

Nautitech 47 Power or Nautitech 46 Sail

The Nautitech 47 Power is a sleek power catamaran, designed by Nautitech Catamarans and architected by Marc Lombard.

Catamaran enthusiasts applaud the Nautitech 47 for its short extended hardtop, modern navigation station, and excellent bridge deck clearance . This Nautitech 47 Power has similar attractive features, including:

  • A large saloon with a 360-degree panorama
  • Optimized hulls and an optimized hardtop
  • A comfortable navigation station area that can seat two
  • A spacious gallery with large benches for working on
  • A generous flybridge and cockpit that provides plenty of room for lounging
  • The flybridge can also be enclosed, protecting it from bad weather
  • A lifting platform that can be lowered into the water to create a ‘beach’ in the middle of the sea
  • Three cabins which can be converted into four depending on how many guests you are entertaining

The Nautitech 47 Power was launched in 2018 and is based on the Nautitech 46 Sail. It employs modern cruising and technical features, including:

  • A draft of 3 feet 11 inches (1.20 meters)
  • A fuel capacity of 2 x 170 gallons (2 x 645 liters)
  • A water tank capacity of 2 x 79 gallons (2 x 300 liters)
  • Two Volva Penta engines with a power of 225 HP

Nautitech 46 Sail offers :

  • Two Volva Penta engines with a power of 40 HP
  • A fuel capacity of 2 x 79 gallons (2 x 300 liters)

The only potential drawback of the Nautitech 47 Power is that it has exposed helms. However, you can fix this with a bimini, which will incur an additional cost.

If you’re interested in buying a Nautitech 47/46, visit NautitechCatamarans.com to find your nearest dealer. The dealer may offer you a sea trial where you can take the catamaran out to sea and judge its performance for yourself. You can also buy a Nautitech second-hand; browse YatchWorld.com to see some options.

Leopard 45 (Sail)

The Leopard 45 is a luxury catamaran that is popular with both charter companies and private owners. Simonis-Voogd designed the external shell while Robertson and Caine did the internal interiors. As its name suggests, the Leopard 45 is 45 feet (13.72 meters) long. It has been recommended by Gregor Tarjan, author of ‘ The Complete Guide for Cruising Sailors ’ and the president of Aeroyacht Ltd.

The Leopard 45 was launched in 2017 and carried forward some of the most popular features and design aspects of earlier Leopard models. For instance, the Leopard 45 has a flybridge lounge which includes space for a seating area, a sunbed, and a table. This feature won an award when it was included in the Leopard 50. Other positive attributes of the Leopard 45 include:

  • An increased aft area with floating stairs lead up to the cockpit
  • The option to have three or four cabins depending on the number of guests you have
  • An open plan saloon and galley, adding to the catamaran’s overall spaciousness
  • A protected helm station
  • Hardtop lounge in the most recent models

Some of the technical specifications of the Leopard 45 include:

  • A minimum draft of 4 feet 11 inches (1.5 meters)
  • A bridge deck clearance of 2 feet 9 inches (0.83 meters)
  • A freshwater capacity of 206 gallons (780 liters)
  • A fuel capacity of 185 gallons (780 liters)
  • Two engines with 45 HP each

A new Leopard 45 will be available for purchase directly from Leopard Catamarans in 2022. However, if you can’t wait or want one at a lower price point, consider buying a used one. A range of used Leopard 45s is available on YachtWorld.com .

A Leopard 45 costs between $957 000 – $234 000

Lagoon 440 (Sail)

The Lagoon 440 is a catamaran recognized for its large interior volume, making it a popular catamaran for charter companies. However, the volume also makes it an excellent catamaran for families or owners looking to host large parties. Lagoon also made a power-cat version called the Lagoon 44.

At 44 feet (13.7 meters) long, the Lagoon 440 is relatively heavy. However, it has several functional advantages, including:

  • Four cabins with four en-suite heads
  • A bimini top
  • A cockpit with speakers and a shower that is easily accessible by guests
  • A large galley with potential for island top benches
  • Lazy jacks and a canvas catchment system that allows for easier sail handling
  • Additional storage space in the aft and cockpits

Meanwhile, some of the technical specifications of the Lagoon 440 include:

  • A maximum draft of 4.3 feet (1.30 meters)
  • One engine capacity with a total power of 54 HP
  • Freshwater tanks with a capacity of 237 gallons (897 liters)
  • A fuel tank capacity of 172 gallons (651 liters)

While the Lagoon 440 has an excellent collection of features, it does have some drawbacks that users have noted. Some flybridge models of the Lagoon 440 have a high boom position that may make it difficult to access the sail bag. The saloon’s leading edge has a slight squaring, which may be challenging to get aesthetically used to.

Despite these drawbacks, the Lagoon 440 is still a great option if you are on a strict budget. The Lagoon 440 had a six-year production run, where over 400 of the models were produced. As a result, several Lagoon 440s are always available in the second-hand market. Visit YatchtWorld.com to explore catamarans of this model that are currently for sale.

A Lagoon 440 can be purchased at $290 000 – $525 000

Saona 47 (Sail)

Made by Fountaine Pajot, the Saona 47 is a luxury catamaran that is 45.7 feet (13.94 meters) long. Designed by Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design, it has received several industry and maritime awards, including SAIL magazine’s award for the best multihull cruising boat (40-50 feet).

Launched in April 2017, the Saona 47 is relatively new on the market. As a result, it features a modern design and modern amenities. Some of the most enticing features of the Saona 47 include:

  • Several spaces for passengers to lounge and relax, including a large sunbathing area, a lounge deck, and an open plan cockpit
  • A lift that can also be converted into a swimming platform
  • A large galley with an island bench
  • Three cabins, with the master cabin having an en-suite bathroom. If you’re looking to charter it, there is a four-cabin version with space for a crew.
  • Good visibility from the helm and the opportunity to engage with other passengers

The Saona 47 also offers an excellent sailing performance. It has a carefully planned weight-to-value ratio, which allows for both speed and stability. Some of the technical features of the Saona 47 are:

  • A draft of 4.3 feet (1.3 meters)
  • A sail area of 828.8 feet (77 meters)
  • A fuel capacity of 2 x 124 gallons (2 x 470 litres)

To buy the Saona 47 new, you can lodge an inquiry on FountainePajot.com . However, you can also visit YachtWorld.com to see if you can find a used Saona 47.

A used Saona 47 may cost between $600,000 – $999,000.

Excess 12 (Sail)

The Excess 12 was launched in 2019 by Groupe Beneteau, the same group which designs Lagoon catamarans. The Excess range has been created for performance-oriented sailing vessels. The catamarans in the range have been applauded for their sailing prowess and their space. The Excess 12 was the first of the range and has been named the best cruising multihull under 40 feet by Sail Magazine.

Designed by VPLP Design, the Excess 12 is considered a ‘sporty’ catamaran. It is 38 feet and 6 inches (11.74 meters). It has an open bimini and a light helm that gives it a feel similar to a monohull. Other attractive features of the Excess 12 include:

  • A cockpit with a retractable roof that allows for direct access to sunlight
  • The cockpit also has dining space for up to 8 people
  • Room for two to three people in the helm
  • The option between three or four cabins
  • A high aspect rig ratio
  • An aft double steering station
  • Most areas of the Excess 12 are constructed with cedar and white blend woodwork and united windows, making for a beautiful, natural aesthetic

Reviewers of the Excess 12 note a minor drawback of the twin aft helm. Its location in the corner of the cabin can create a blind spot. Other than this, many of the sailing features of the Excess 12 are positively received. These include:

  • A draft of 4 feet and 5 inches (1.35 meters)
  • An upwind sail area of 82 meters (269 feet)
  • A fuel capacity of 2 x 53 gallons (2 x 200 liters)
  • The freshwater capacity of 79 gallons (300 liters)

If you’re interested in buying the Excess 12 new, visit the dealer’s page on ExcessCatamrans.com, or visit YatchtWorld.com to look for a secondhand model.

Catana 50 (Sail)

The Catana 50 is another older model that can hold its own against many more modern cruising catamarans. Like the Antares 44i, it is a more pocket-friendly option that doesn’t compromise sailing quality and passenger amenities.

Catana is one of the world’s best catamaran producers, known for creating stable yet fast boats and for their quality finishes. Innovative, high-tech composite materials constitute most of the structure of our sailing catamarans: hulls, flybridge, decks, bulkheads and more. Fountaine Pajot has perfected a resin injection and infusion technique, an advanced technology that gives our boats all their robustness. Thanks to this expertise, we can make our catamarans considerably lighter while maintaining consistent quality . Injection also makes it possible to meet the most stringent environmental requirements, in line with the commitments of the Fountaine Pajot Group.

Sailing catamarans from 40 to 50 feet are built at the Aigrefeuille headquarters, a few kilometres from La Rochelle. Catamaran yachts from 51 to 80 feet are built in La Rochelle, France, where they benefit from a slipway.

Excess Catamarans - Back to homepage

The Excess 15 on video!

With its 125 m² of space and its 25-meter-high mast, the Excess 15 is the largest catamaran in the Excess range. Let us take you on board with a video!

In order to view this video, first you have to authorize the use of web statistics cookies.

Inspired by racing, made for cruising:  This is the Excess trademark and the Excess 15 perfectly represents this philosophy. In addition to her wide-open spaces, she breaks with the codes of traditional catamarans, especially with her twin helm stations at the after end of the hulls.

The double helm station layout offers ideal visibility and a real connection with the catamaran. Sail optimization is right there at your fingertips, for an outstanding sailing experience.

Its singular, balanced and sleek lines embody the spirit of Excess while providing the comfort of a big cruising catamaran. Its stylishly designed interior, which is very bright and open to the outside, brings the promise of unforgettable moments. The interior layout consists of a huge, raised saloon with a 360° view of the sea. The catamaran's 8-meter-wide cockpit is large enough to accommodate a beautiful table which can easily seat eight.

Finally, the Excess 15 has a remarkable asset: the opportunity to transform your cockpit according to your desires. Open the sunroof for a panoramic view of the sails as well as the stars.

Happy New Year 2021!

Excess is inviting itself to Yachting Live!

DutchCat: The 15p-per-mile-marvel motor catamaran

  • Electric boats

This electric or hybrid-engined motorcat takes fuel-efficiency cruising to a new level

Evolution rather than revolution is the name of the established boatbuilder’s game. The finish and layout of current models might be a quantum leap ahead of where they were a decade ago, but conceptually little has changed. Even new ideas such as Azimut’s Magellano range with its ‘dual-mode’ hull capable of running comfortably at displacement and semi-displacement speeds, offer only tiny gains in fuel efficiency. But with ever more emphasis on environmental concerns, pressure for change is growing in a motor boat world where 1mpg for a 40ft planing boat is the norm. Enter Jan van Eck, the man behind the DutchCat. Rather than wait for the mainstream builders to rip up the rule book, he has simply started without one and created what he believes to be the true future of motorboating.

DutchCat main deck

His vision starts with the hull shape. It was seeing catamaran sailing dinghies consistently outperform monohulled ones that convinced Jan twin hulls were more easily driven. Of course, motorcats are nothing new but most existing powercats are far wider than monohulls of a similar length, making them unwieldy for inland use. The Fountaine-Pajot 44, for example, has a beam of 6.6m, compared with the monohulled Azimut Magellano 43 at 4.4m. The 41ft DutchCat comes in at 4.9m, far closer to monohull territory and crucially granting it access to the French canal system, where locks are typically just 5.2m wide.

One boat, two versions

Designed by Vripack and RCD Category B-rated, there are two versions of the DutchCat hull. The ‘Comfort’ version has a round bilge form and long shallow keels, similar to a sailing yacht, and is designed to run at lower speedswith smaller engines. The ‘Sport’ hull is a more traditional powerboat form with sprayrails and tunnelled props for higher speeds, toppingout at 22 knots with bigger motors. Crucial though hull design is, it’s only one part of DutchCat’s energy efficiency equation. Similar blue-sky thinking has been brought to bear on pushing that ultra efficient hull shape through the water. Perhaps the most radical power source is an all-electric setup that uses twin Kräutler 48V 10kW (14hp) or 15kW (21hp) motors connected to conventional shaftdrives for a maximum speed of 8.5 knots and a cruising gait of 4 to 6 knots. Gel traction 48kWh batteries are standard, with Lithium ones an option. DutchCat claims about seven hours of cruising at 5 knots and about ten hours to recharge from a 16A supply. Pure diesel is an alternative. Comfort-spec boats rely on a pair of Yanmar 3YM30 3-cylinder 29hp engines to yield about 11 knots flat out and cruise at 8 knots. Opting for the Sport hull configuration allows twin Yanmar 4BY3 150hp engines to boost maximum velocity toward 22 knots.

Out on the water

We had the chance to try the diesel hybrid setup with twin 29hp Yanmars. Two hulls mean two bow thrusters – a pair of 55Kgf Vetus units combine with wide-spaced shafts to make wriggling out of Amsterdam Marina and on to the IJ fairly painless. Despite being the first boat from this new company, it feels well engineered with commendably low noise levels at 2,500rpm which equates to a 7-knot cruise. But to really drop the decibels, switching to all-electric is the way to go. The electric motors use the same engine controls as the diesels, so it’s just a case of switching off the Yanmars, engaging the electric motors and then throttling back up. Under electric power there are two obvious differences. Performance is muted – 5 to 6 knots is as much as you’ll get if you want meaningful range. But so is noise. The closest comparison would be sailing, with the gentle gurgle of water around the hulls the only sound. This speed is more than adequate for inland waterways and should allow for 5.5 hours of cruising from the 38kW battery pack.

DMS's new flapping fins could become a staple for motor boats

Hybrid heaven: Adler’s 76 Suprema

Taking diesel electric propulsion to a new level, Adler's 76 Suprema may just be too innovative for the yachting marketplace

So how does that efficiency translate to cost? Like any boat, travelling at displacement speeds is the key to the biggest savings – DutchCat hasn’t rewritten the laws of physics. Nonetheless, with the smaller diesel engines, the boat is burning under a gallon an hour at 7 knots, which is less than half that of the slightly longer but narrower hybrid-hulled Magellano 43 (albeit without its 22-knot top end). With marine diesel currently hovering at around £1/litre that’s about £4/hour. At 5 knots under electric power, it’s using roughly 5.5kWh. With 1kWh of mains electric costing 13.5p, that’s about 75p/hour or a miserly 15p per mile!

So is this the future? Well, it’s certainly one of the most credible attempts to create something truly new and efficient that we’ve seen for some time, and it’s telling that it comes from a brand new start-up with zero boatbuilding history.

Hugo’s take

Combining the efficiency of a catamaran hull with the low-running costs of a diesel-electric hybrid makes perfect sense, particularly for inland cruising. I reckon DutchCat are on to something.

Samantha Putterman

Former President Donald Trump has selected Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance as his vice presidential running mate.

"After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio," Trump wrote July 15 on Truth Social.

Vance, 39, won his Senate seat in 2022 with Trump’s backing. He would be one of the youngest vice presidents in U.S. history. But before becoming one of Trump’s fiercest allies and defenders, Vance sharply criticized the former president. During the 2016 presidential election, Vance wrote  that he goes "back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical a–hole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler." He has since sounded a different tone including in defending Trump’s actions in the events leading up to and during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Vance was critical of Vice President Mike Pence’s handling of the 2020 election results certification and in an interview with Kaitlan Collins on CNN questioned whether the vice president’s life was actually endangered during the riots. Vance also vocally condemned what he sees as the tenor of political rhetoric, which he tied to an assassination attempt during Trump’s July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs," Vance posted on X shortly after the shooting. "That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination."

Who is J.D. Vance and what is his relationship with Trump?

Before winning his Senate seat in 2022, Vance worked as an investor, commentator and bestselling author.

Vance, who was born in Middleton, Ohio, served in the U.S. Marine Corps before attending Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He worked as a corporate lawyer before moving into the tech industry as a venture capitalist.

Vance rose to fame through his 2016 memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," which describes his growing up in poverty and details the isolation, violence and drug addiction that often surrounds poor white communities in middle America.

When the book was released, Vance started talking to the media about issues important to people in his community — and started criticizing Trump. Vance told ABC News in August 2016 that, although Trump successfully "diagnoses the problems" people are facing, he didn't see Trump "offering many solutions." In an October 2016 interview with journalist Charlie Rose, Vance said he was a "never-Trump guy." In another 2016 interview about his book, Vance told a reporter that, although his background would have made him a natural Trump supporter, "the reason, ultimately, that I am not … is because I think that (Trump) is the most-raw expression of a massive finger pointed at other people." Vance began to publicly change course when he launched his Senate campaign in 2021. He deleted tweets from 2016 that included him calling Trump "reprehensible" and an "idiot." In another deleted tweet following the release of the "Access Hollywood" tape on which Trump said fame enabled him to grope women, Vance wrote : "Fellow Christians, everyone is watching us when we apologize for this man. Lord help us."

He apologized about his Trump criticisms in a July 2021 Fox News interview , and asked people not to judge him based on what he had said. "I’ve been very open that I did say those critical things and I regret them, and I regret being wrong about the guy," Vance said. "I think he was a good president, I think he made a lot of good decisions for people, and I think he took a lot of flak." In June, after news circulated that Vance was on Trump’s short list for vice president, Fox News host Bret Baier asked Vance about the comments. Vance said he was wrong about Trump. "He was a great president, and it's one of the reasons why I'm working so hard to make sure he gets a second term," he said.

Trump endorsed Vance in the Ohio GOP Senate primary, helping him win the race and the general election. As a senator, Vance lobbied to defeat Ohio’s constitutional amendment that ensured access to abortion, calling it a "gut punch" after the measure passed. After the hazardous East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment in 2023, which ignited a fire and led to evacuations and a controlled release of chemicals, Vance worked with Ohio’s senior senator, Democrat Sherrod Brown, to introduce rail safety legislation. How Vance fares on the Truth-O-Meter

We rated False Vance’s claim in February that the $95 million Ukraine supplemental aid package included a "hidden impeachment clause against President Trump." The measure doesn’t mention impeachment. Because it’s the president’s job to spend congressionally appropriated funds, experts said whoever is elected president next will be responsible for spending the money allocated in the law. It doesn’t target former Trump; it would apply the same way to Biden, should he be reelected.

On immigration, Vance falsely claimed in 2022 that Biden’s "open border" meant that "more Democrat voters were "pouring into this country." Immigrants who cross the border illegally cannot vote in federal elections. The process for immigrants to become citizens and therefore gain the right to vote can take a decade or longer.

PolitiFact also addressed controversial comments Vance made in 2021, surfaced during his Senate run, about rape being "inconvenient."

Vance didn’t directly say "rape is inconvenient." But when he was asked in an interview whether laws should allow people to get abortions if they were victims of rape or incest, he said that society shouldn’t view a pregnancy or birth resulting from rape or incest as "inconvenient." In the interview, which occurred before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Vance was also asked whether anti-abortion laws should include rape and incest exceptions. "Two wrongs don't make a right," he said in response. "At the end of day, we are talking about an unborn baby. What kind of society do we want to have? A society that looks at unborn babies as inconveniences to be discarded?" When asked again about the exceptions, Vance said: "The question portrays a certain presumption that is wrong. It’s not whether a woman should be forced to bring a child to term, it’s whether a child should be allowed to live, even though the circumstances of that child’s birth are somehow inconvenient or a problem to the society." Since being on Trump’s vice presidential short list, Vance has expressed a more moderate view on abortion. On July 7 on NBC’s "Meet the Press," for example, Vance said he supports access to the abortion pill mifepristone after the Supreme Court dismissed the case against it — echoing what Trump said days before during the presidential debate.

Teen sprinter Quincy Wilson follows Olympic footsteps of 15-year-old Esther Stroy

Quincy Wilson waits to start a heat during the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials on June 23, 2024, in Eugene, Ore.

There might be only one American who knows exactly what 16-year-old Quincy Wilson will be feeling as a youngster sprinting on the sport’s biggest stage.

Wilson’s rapid ascent from Maryland prodigy to Olympic contender has tapped the memory bank of 70-year-old Esther Stroy Harper, who was just 15 when she ran the 400 meters for the U.S. in Mexico City in 1968 .

“Oh, yes, this has brought back big memories,” Stroy Harper told NBC News recently. “Every time I see a youngster like him participating and going to the Olympics, it brings back lots of memories.”

Wilson is the youngest -ever male to make the U.S. Olympic track -and-field team, while Stroy Harper remains the youngest person ever for Team USA.

Stream every moment and every medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Peacock, starting with the Opening Ceremony July 26 at 12 p.m. ET.

Even though Stroy Harper lives in Camp Springs, Maryland, less than 40 miles from where Wilson is enrolled at the Bullis School in Potomac , they’ve never met. She has trained on the same track and has been closely following his junior career.

Esther Stroy Harper.

“I’ve gone to the Penn Relays for the past three years and I’ve watched this young man run, and oh , my goodness ,” a laughing Stroy Harper said of Wilson, who will be junior this fall.

“I was jumping up for joy and pushing him through that finish line at the Olympic trials,” she added. “I hope he continues doing as well as he’s doing because he’s awesome. He is definitely truth.”

Her advice to Wilson is simple: Ignore everyone but your coach and don’t get distracted.

“Stick to your plan, listen to your coach and run the race that you know you can run, that you’ve been running all year that’s gotten you to the Olympic trials and now you’re in the Olympics,” she said. “Continue to run that same race. Don’t deviate from that.”

Wilson missed out on qualifying as an individual in the 400 meters, finishing a competitive sixth at 44.94 seconds. Quincy Hall won that race at trials at 44.17.

Earlier in the trials, Wilson clocked in at 44.66, which set an under-18 record. He would go on to beat that time in the semifinals.

A week after his 400-meter Paris dream appeared dashed, he was named to the team as a possible relay candidate for the 4x400 .

Before Wilson was named to the team, the youngest U.S. males to make the Olympic track squad were 1500-meter runner Jim Ryun and sprinter Erriyon Knighton , who were both 17 in 1968 and 2021, respectively.

Southern California-based sports psychologist Ross Flowers said any young athlete in such a setting will have to face down self-doubt.

“I would tell them they deserve to be there just like anyone else,” said Flowers , who counts the U.S. Olympic Committee, the Los Angeles Lakers, the L.A. Rams and the San Francisco Giants as past clients.

“They put in the same hard work, effort and training in qualifying and making Olympics,” he said. “They made the team like anyone else.”

Despite making a squad based on quantified standards, the mental hurdles faced by young athletes can be daunting.

“As a younger athlete getting to this level and competing against people that are twice your age, of course there’s going to be self-doubt or concern when you’re looking at people (teammates or opponents) that you’ve idolized,” Flowers said.

The action in Paris kicks off with opening ceremonies on July 26 and clos es on Aug. 11 . But back in 1968, the games ran from Oct. 12 to Oct. 27, during the school year.

The track team camped out in Los Alamos, New Mexico, starting in late August of 1968 so athletes could acclimate themselves to the oxygen-starved conditions of Mexico City .

And while Stroy Harper’s parents supported her Olympic dreams, they didn’t want her falling behind academically. So Stroy Harper had to enroll in a local school where she attended class in the morning before training like a world-class athlete in the afternoon.

She’d be up at 5:30 a.m., get in a run, shower, grab breakfast, go to class “and then meet everybody on the track at 3:30,” Stroy Harper recalled.

“I was still a teenager and I had just gone into the 10th grade, so they didn’t want me coming back [to school] in the middle of October and not know what was in the classes,” Stroy Harper said.

“I remember that because the high altitude, it’d make you tired. And I was running early in the morning, then had to go to class, had to stay awake, then come back, work out to 6, then eat, go to bed, and do it all over again.”

When she got to Mexico City, Stroy Harper made it through the first round of competition. But in the semifinals, she was slowed by a lingering hamstring injury and finished fifth in her heat, just outside the top four needed for qualification to the finals.

That hamstring was troublesome for years to come and she did not qualify for the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

In between those Olympics, she won Pan American gold as a member of the 4x400 rel ay team and bronze in the 200-meter.

The retired real estate appraiser remains active, regularly running in 5K and 10K races and going 3 miles each day on a treadmill or on foot outside in Prince George’s County.

Esther Stroy Harper working out at a gym recently.

Stroy Harper said she’s confident Wilson will perform well in Paris because he doesn’t know any better.

“Right now he’s too dumb and young” to feel pressure, the chuckling onetime sprinter said. “He just wants to run, and he knows he’s fast and he trains hard. He wants to show what he can do.”

10 things i learned about ea college football 25 in the first 48 hours.

EA College Football 25

I won’t bury the lede here. Madden 25 hasn’t been released, but EA College Football 25 plays the best video game of football I’ve ever seen.

Does that mean that I love every part of the game? No, but there is no doubt that all video game football lovers should have this one in their collection. Let me also preface the meat of this article by saying I haven’t had a chance to dive too deeply into Ultimate Team.

I prefer to wait for the servers to be fully populated and for EA to have an opportunity to reinforce things for the impact of an excited user base. Here are the ten important details I learned in my first 48 hours playing EACF 25.

The Game is Stunning Visually in Every Way

From a pure graphics standpoint, this feels like the first true current-gen football game ever released. The player models, 3-D grass, lighting, and environments are strong.

I have taken a ton of snapshots from gameplay in the replay suite and marveled at the detail in several games.

catamaran 15 meter

The Best Gaming Laptops Under $1,000: Boost Your Games For Less

Beyond the gameplay visuals, the presentation is excellent. Multiple camera angles, mascots, cheerleaders, stadiums, and crowds add to this beautiful game.

The Game Plays Fast

It took me about a half of football to get used to, but EACF 25 plays a faster game than all other football titles before it. Initially, I wasn’t sure I liked it, but after I got acquainted with the violent nature of some of the movements, anything else felt too slow.

I’m comfortable with the variant between fast and slow players, which makes game-changing stars more fun to control and as dominant as they should be in college football.

The Commentary Doesn’t Mention Players by Name Often

On the downside of commentary, things can sound generic at times. There are thousands of names in the game, so I can imagine it was a task tying those callouts in with one commentary team–let alone three.

However, with the presentation on such a high level throughout the rest of the game, it is noticeable that the commentators rarely refer to the players by name. I’m hoping some tuning can be done on that end to improve the audio post-launch, but as it is, the commentary sounds super general.

Currently, it sounds more like something you’d hear in the 5th year of your dynasty when you have a ton of custom-named guys at schools, and the game doesn’t have their surnames in the database.

Road to Glory Has Some Nice Layers, But Freshman Year Can Get Boring

The single-player campaign feature is back, and there is a lot to like. I love the option to choose whether you’re going to be a 5-, 4-, 3-, or 2-star athlete.

I also like the way you determine which school you’ll attend when your college career starts. However, I didn’t like not having the option to play any high school games. That part of the experience was always an excellent option in the old NCAA games. Another issue, and probably the biggest one, is the total makeup of activities during your freshman season if you land at a school that doesn’t allow you to play from Day 1.

I like the position battles and building coach trust through the mini-games. I also like the option to practice to earn more XP, which can be used to upgrade your player. I also like having to balance studying for exams with football duties.

However, something is missing. While the first goal should ultimately be to take the field as a starter, EA missed the mark when it came to creating a compelling mini-game for non-starters. Playing a simulated game with lower-stringed players against the guy you compete with would have added a nice tease and a piece of preparation for when you can play in a real game.

As it was, I couldn’t wait to get out of my freshman year because I was bored after simulating the first three or four weeks of the season.

Dynasty Mode is Stacked and Recruiting is Even Better Than it Used to Be, But...

It is clear that EA knew how important recruiting was to the overall quality of dynasty mode. Quite honestly, EA could have given fans the exact same recruiting system from NCAA 14, and I believe the vast majority of users would have been satisfied.

Injecting the transfer portal was a must, but the game's other layers, tags, improved UI, and notification system make this top-notch.

While going through recruiting or free agency in a sports game, I ask myself, ' As a content creator, is there enough here for me to tell a story to my viewers with this aspect of the game?' The answer is yes, a thousand times over.

However, the recruiting is tripped up a bit by the lack of customization options.

You cannot create or edit existing recruits. Thus, you cannot create or customize recruiting classes. That's going to be a significant issue for some people. I remember creating crazy 5-star recruits in NCAA 14 and enjoying watching the fight between multiple schools trying to get him to commit.

That itch will have to be scratched by a supply of computer-generated recruits. Thankfully, there is a ton of variation in the prospects, but there is nothing like having your own.

Injuries Are in the Game, But I’d Probably Turn Them Up a Little

Just before release, I was worried that injuries weren’t in the game the way they should be. There was some odd wording regarding the discussion of the Wear-and-Tear system and injuries.

You never like to see real people get hurt, but in a sports video game, injuries represent realism and immersion. Thankfully, I simmed a few weeks of action and saw players out for up to 15 weeks. I’ve never been so relieved to see a severe injury. I didn’t see any in-game injuries besides some basic stuff.

I’m leaning toward bumping the injury slider from the default (10) to about 20 or 25 to see how that feels.

The Inability to Edit Rosters is Going to Anger a Sect of Users

My biggest issue with the game is the inability to edit the rosters fully. That level of customization was always one of the biggest things I looked forward to doing in the game.

As it is, the game excels in many areas, which makes it easier to accept the roster editing limitation. However, for some users who have been eagerly anticipating the series' return, this limitation may be a significant disappointment, especially if they were looking forward to recreating their college football universe.

TeamBuilder Will Be Ready Post-Launch

The limitations on player customization are exacerbated by what seems like a delayed release of the TeamBuilder website.

EA didn’t tell us the feature was delayed. Instead, an update on the feature would be released on July 19. I have confidence the feature will be strong, though you are limited to the number of schools you can add to a dynasty.

A little more transparency would have made this part of the release smoother.

Road to the College Football Playoff Offered Me the Competitive Feeling I Needed

I can have mounds of fun playing a sports game offline if it has an excellent franchise/dynasty mode. EACF 25 is one of those games.

However, there are times when I want to test my skills against another player. While CUT may offer some of those opportunities, I think my jam will be Road to the College Football Playoff.

I enjoyed trying to find the right school to play my style of football, and testing against another user–especially considering there are so many potential matchups.

The ranking system seems strong so far, and I can imagine getting in at least five of these games per week.

EACF 25 is Going to Help Sell Madden 25

Aside from the MVP pre-order bundle that allows you to get both EACF 25 and Madden 25’s top editions for a discount, the quality of the gameplay in the former is going to help validate the improvements in the latter.

While EACF 25 and Madden 25 are different games, the college version does provide a preview of the direction EA is taking their American football product, and its positive.

An AR-15-style Rifle Was Recovered at the Scene of the Trump Rally Shooting

The AR-15 rifle, billed as “America’s rifle” by the National Rifle Association, has been commonly used by mass shooters and is one of the most ubiquitous weapons in the United States.

AR-15-style rifles on display during a convention.

By Thomas Gibbons-Neff

  • Published July 14, 2024 Updated July 15, 2024

An AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle was recovered by law enforcement at the scene of the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump at his rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday.

AR-15-style rifles are frequently customized with easy-to-purchase scopes and other accessories that can make even an untrained shooter lethal.

The rifle can be built to fire heavier and lighter rounds, such as .22-caliber and .308-caliber, but most commonly fires a 5.56-millimeter round, and has an effective range of between 500 and 800 yards.

In the hands of a trained shooter, accuracy at that range is difficult but possible, especially if the rifle is supported by bipods or sandbags that can stabilize the sway of its barrel.

In 2004, the AR-15 re-entered the gun market with far more popularity after the end of the federal assault weapons ban. The rifle was marketed as accessible and easy to personalize.

Light, precise and with little recoil, the Colt Armalite Rifle-15 Sporter was the first civilian version of the military’s M16 rifle when it first hit the market in the 1960s. It had a patented gas operating system that allowed for rapid fire and reloading. The weapon could easily handle a 20-round magazine, was easy to disassemble and was marketed, in one of Colt’s early advertisements, to hunters, campers and collectors.

The sale of AR-15-type rifles, and other military-style semiautomatic weapons, is banned in nine states : Washington, California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Illinois and Delaware.

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article referred imprecisely to the ban on AR-15 and other military-style semiautomatic weapons. While sales of such weapons are banned in nine states, not all of those states ban possession of weapons owned before the bans were put in place.

WASHINGTON − Former President Donald Trump was "fine" Saturday night after an assassination attempt left him with a bullet wound to the ear.

The gunman, identified by the FBI early Sunday as Thomas Matthew Crooks , opened fire on a sweltering campaign rally in Pennsylvania, and was killed by Secret Service agents, officials said. One spectator was killed and two others were "critically injured," the Secret Service said.

“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,” Trump said on Truth Social.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear," Trump said, adding that he "immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin."

President Joe Biden condemned the shooting, telling reporters, "the idea – the idea – that there’s political violence, or violence in America like this, is just unheard of, it’s just not appropriate. Everybody, every must condemn it. Everybody."

Here's what we know about the attack:

Trump bloodied as shots rang out, spokesman says he's OK

The former president was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when shots rang out and the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee grabbed his right ear before dropping to the stage floor.

Trump's ear and face were bloodied moments later when a cordon of Secret Service agents brought him to his feet.

Trump raised a defiant fist into the air as he was hustled off the stage and out of the rally.

“It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,” Trump said in a statement on Truth Social.

More: Thomas Matthew Crooks identified as Trump shooter

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin," he wrote. "Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement earlier Saturday. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility.”

President Biden denounces 'political violence'

Speaking from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, President Joe Biden denounced the attack.

“There is no place for this kind of violence in America. It’s sick. It’s sick,” Biden told reporters .

“It’s one of the reasons we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”

Biden said he'd tried to reach Trump by phone. “So far it appears he is doing well,” the president said.

Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks killed by Secret Service

Crooks, the gunman, was positioned on a rooftop approximately 150 yards from the rally venue. A witness told BBC news he had tried to alert local law enforcement of the sniper moments before he opened fire.

The FBI said Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, fired multiple shots from an “elevated position” outside of the Trump rally before Secret Service personnel “neutralized” the shooter, the law enforcement agency said.

The FBI hadn't established a motive as of early Sunday morning.
