Pula and Zadar might seem far from each other when you look at the map of Croatia. So, how do you get from Pula to Zadar?
I did this route many times, as my family lives in Pula and Zadar has a direct flight to where I live in France.
There are 4 ways to get from Pula to Zadar, and the other way around.
You can take a bus, a ferry, a domestic flight, or drive.
There is no train between these two cities.
The distance between Zadar and Pula is about 400 km, but driving or taking the bus might not be the best option.
Let’s see which option is the best for you!

Starting with the best option for traveling from Zadar to Pula (and the other way around) – Pula Zadar Catamaran !
This catamaran is the most time and cost-efficient way to do this journey.
People call it Pula to Zadar ferry, but it is actually a catamaran. It is pedestrian-only, meaning you can’t take your car on board.
I took a catamaran from Pula, it departs at 7 AM and I was in Zadar before noon!
If you’re taking the route the other way around, the catamaran departs from Zadar at 4 PM.
The journey was very comfortable, and the boat is big enough so you don’t get seasick. In fact, the sea was so calm when I traveled, that it didn’t feel like we were on the sea at all!
You can walk around the boat, sit inside or outside, and you get to see beautiful Croatian islands along the way.
Catamaran runs year-round, but you’ll see it is more frequent during the summer months when you check the schedule .
In July and August it runs 6 days a week and only 2 times a week in the low season. There is just one journey per day, leaving Pula in the morning and coming back from Zadar in the afternoon.
⛴️ Buy ferry tickets online here!
The fastest way to get from Zadar to Pula is by taking a domestic flight.
The flight only takes about 40 minutes , and both airports are small so you don’t need to come 3 hours before departure.
I took a flight from Zadar to Pula and the other way around several times and I have no complaints. The plane is small, but gets the job done!
If you travel in high season, there are flights 6 days a week. On some days, you even have morning and afternoon options.
Naturally, it is not the cheapest option. You can find flights starting at 50€ if you book in advance, but they can be close to 100€ for a last-minute trip.
Flight is a good option if you’re in a rush. Also, both airports are relatively close to the city center and you can easily take a bus once you’re there.
Buses are the most common way to travel around Croatia, but the problem is that not all lines are well-served.
A bus journey from Pula to Zadar takes 7-10 hours depending on the operator and the route.
Sure, 400km distance is quite long, but that’s a long drive because some buses stop in Rijeka first.
Sometimes, you’ll have to take a bus. If you’re visiting Croatia on a budget , or the catamaran doesn’t run in the winter because of the bad weather.
I did it! It’s possible, it is just not the most comfortable option.
You can go to the bus station to get tickets a couple of days in advance or buy them online.
I suggest you buy tickets at least 2-3 days in advance, as there are only 2 buses a day (and one of them takes almost 10 hours!) so tickets can sell out.
🚌 Browse all bus timetables here!
Finally, we have driving or car sharing.
I drove from Pula to Zadar once (twice in fact, as I had to come back home) and the drive was actually not bad, I found it quite enjoyable!
I didn’t take the highway when I went to Zadar. Instead, I drove on the free roads, so the drive was slightly longer but more scenic.
Most driving routes in Croatia have a free and paying route. Paying for the highway is a faster, but more expensive option.
You can choose which road to take depending on your budget and how much time you have.
Google Maps is reliable for figuring out driving routes!
Renting a car in Croatia is a great option if you’re on a road trip along the coast!
The problem you might have is if you’re not coming back to Pula, you might pay a higher fee for renting a car in one city and leaving it in another.
🚗 Check rental cars in Croatia here!
If you don’t want to rent a car and drive, you can join somebody else through Blablacar !
Blablacar is used quite frequently in Croatia, and many of my friends use it to avoid buses when traveling around.
If you’re not familiar with the concept, you register on the site and browse the journey you need.
I think it’s cool that you can see drivers’ ratings and reviews from others who used the platform, so you don’t worry about safety.
It’s kind of a last-minute thing though. People don’t really advertise the journey too far in advance, so you might have to check a couple of times before finding someone.
Drivers set the price they think is fair, so it can be cheaper or more expensive than a bus.
I did all these routes, and I’d say that the catamaran is the best option .
Catamaran takes only about 4 hours and costs a fraction of a flight’s price, making it the most cost and time-effective option.
The bus from Pula to Zadar takes 7-10 hours, depending on the route and the operator for the same price as the catamaran!
Driving is fine if you’re on a road trip along the Croatian coast, but if you’re traveling by public transport it is not worth it to rent a car just for this journey.
So, now that you know how to get from one city to another, here are the best things to do in Pula for those going there, and the best things to do in Zadar if that’s your final destination!

As you can see, it’s not difficult to venture between Zadar and Pula, two cities well worth visiting.
surprised all options have heavy carbon footprints. no walking are biking options like other euro zone countries?
400 km by bike along the freeway or single lane roads – you’d be dead. Walking would take you at several days – if you didn’t get side-swiped by a semi-trailer on the way. Best to go by heavy carbon options if you ask me.
Low carbon options: you can hire a bareback or crewed sailboat in Pula or Zadar and sail to the other place, or anywhere else. Might take a week each way. Most of the boats have some sort of toilet so you don’t have to do what your hero, Greta Thunberg, and her crew did all the way across the Atlantic.
Without a doubt you could also paddle yourself in a kayak. We did that in Greece, island to island, and the Adriatic is even calmer in the summer than the Ionian sea.
I find that most people who ask for low-carbon options in conversation don’t follow through in reality, and do it just to virtue-signal. Not sure if you’re one of those or not, but in any case, here are two viable options for you to pursue, one of which I’ve actually done myself.
Does anyone know when Croatia Airlines will release their summer 2022 schedule? There are no internal flights scheduled to book on their website. Considering a private transfer is about EUR300 I would think flying would be the cheapest and most direct unless you want to drive? Thanks,
I would check back in January.
