If you share the belief that the best restaurants to visit in a tourist hotspot are the ones frequented by locals, then Da u Batti is the place to go. You’ll see a lot of Italians here, though it’s unlikely you’ll be the only tourist in the restaurant. Da u Batti does have something of a cult following.

The list of favourite Portofino restaurants would be incomplete without Tripoli: think sea view, pesto lasagna, fish skewers, pine nuts and anchovies… It’s a real feast for the eyes and the palate.

• For something a bit different and far off-the-beaten track for the yachting set, U Pin is an agriturismo set on the hills above Portofino. The owners serve home-made food and the view from the rustic terrace over the olive groves and sea is lovely. Book in advance because they aren’t open daily.
• For seaside dining away from the tourist crowds in Portofino, try The Eight (the Eight Hotel’s seafront restaurant) at nearby Paraggi Bay, or just around the corner reserve a waterside table at Capo Nord restaurant/bar.

Visit Faro di Portofino, located on the promontory past the Church of San Giorgio and Castello Brown. Follow the signs for ‘Al Faro’ out to the lighthouse and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views at a small bar overlooking the sea where Antonio serves a vibrant Aperol Spritz or a refreshing limoncello on a summers day! Or, head to San Rocco between Portofino and Camogli where the tiny cliffside bar, Bar Dai Muagetti, is a fantastic spot to enjoy the sea view with a chilled cocktail.

Soak up the view from the terrace at  Belmond Hotel Splendido , it’s included in every luxury travel guide for Portofino, a bucket list spot for day trippers and the food and drinks have a price tag to match.

Enjoy a tasting session with a glass or two of Ligurian wine from any of the wine producers who tend to their vineyards on the steep terraces in the region. Enjoy an aperitivo in the Piazzetta which is the heart of Portofino and watch the world go by.

Walk up the pedestrian street   beside Trattoria Tripoli (on the south side of the harbour) to the Church of San Giorgio and a few minutes later Castello Brown for superb views over Portofino town and the visiting superyachts.

Go shopping in Portofino! For a small town, Portofino has plenty of high-end boutiques including Prada, Loro Piana, Missoni, Gucci, Dior, Giorgio Armani, Luca Jewellers and Louis Vuitton. For the luxury brands, head to Molo Umberto I, Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta, Via Roma or Calata Marconi. Mingo Portofino is well-known for custom footwear especially sandals, or take a half-day trip to the town of Chiavari to browse their large antiques market, Mercatino dell’Antiquariato, where you can buy everything from antique furniture to vintage Italian fashion and artworks.

Much of the Ligurian coastline is best seen from the sea, however there are lots of walkways between towns if charter guests want to go ashore for a leisurely amble or a more strenuous hike.

Explore underwater or the great outdoors – the Protected Marine Reserve of Portofino is perfect for using your yacht toys, go swimming around the rocks at Punta Chiappa or try diving at Grotta dei Gamberi or Punta Vessinaro. Portofino falls in the protected zone for the  Pelagos Sanctuary , therefore it’s a wonderful opportunity to appreciate marine wildlife viewing of whales and dolphins. Portofino Regional Natural Park has many walking paths that follow ancient pilgrim trails through wild thyme, holm oak and pine forests. You can visit the park website  here  for more information about walking trails.

Museo del Parco di Portofino  is situated at the edge of Portofino harbour and has a collection of outdoor sculptures. Open in summer, the sculpture park also hosts meetings, events and cultural gatherings.

Book a tour to the 14th century  La Cervara Abbey , positioned on a cliff between Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure with elegant gardens overlooking the sea including a wisteria courtyard. You can visit the first or third Sunday of the month between April and October.

• Visiting charming Camogli, a fishing town sprinkled with brightly coloured houses and a few attractions such as Castello Della Dragonara. Foodies will no doubt head ashore to Revello Focacceria for the best foccacia in town! Camogli also hosts two famous traditional festivals – Sagra del Pesce is a fish festival that celebrates the bounty of the sea and is held on the second Sunday every May, and the Festa della Stella Maris takes place in August giving yacht charter guests a visual spectacle with parades, boat processions and candles floating in the sea.
• Drop anchor at San Fruttuoso, located between Camogli and Portofino. It’s best reached by sea (though a visit is also possible on foot; we suggest you follow the 1.5-hour Portofino Mare trail which is less challenging than the trail starting at Portofino Vetta). The bay is dominated by San Fruttuoso Abbey and the Torre dei Doria. The clear, greenish-blue sea holds the Christ of the Abyss statue 12-metres down on the sea bed, popular for diving excursions. San Fruttuoso is a lovely place at twilight when the tourist boat shuttles have returned to the coastal resorts and it’s much quieter to enjoy the scenery from the comfort of your private charter yacht.
• Go to Rapallo when on a Italian Riviera yacht charter. You can stroll along the seafront promenade that was frequented by creatives Ernest Hemingway, D.H Lawrence and Ezra Pound, admire the frescoes on the town buildings, ride on the funivia (funicular) to the 16th century Sanctuary of Our Lady Montallegro or swim in the bays at pretty San Michele di Pagana.
• Centred on a peninsula split by two bays, Sestri Levante has all the charm and natural beauty of Portofino, yet outside of summer you’ll barely hear an accent other than Italian. Shops on Via XXV Aprile range from  pasticceria  selling creamy pastries to pint-sized souvenir stores devoted to lemon soaps and ceramics. The town  remains an understated attraction for luxury yacht charters to northern Italy, with particular mention to a yearly festival dedicated to Danish author Hans Christian Andersen and the sandy beach at Baia del Silenzio (Bay of Silence) giving an unsung gem for families on yacht charters.

The Italian Riviera is a crescent-shaped strip of coastline that curves between the French Riviera and Tuscany. With orange-splashed houses, spectacular scenery and a bygone ritziness, this stretch of coastline and its authentic Italian charm is often a refreshing welcome to its noisier neighbour. It's hard to argue with this when you find traditional towns after town painted with orange and red facades backed with dramatic mountains. 

Also known as Liguria, this stretch of coastline extends from the last town in France to the historic port of Genoa, past famous towns of Portofino, Camogli, San Rocco and the Cinque Terre.

Hidden in a tiny creek, out of sight and almost inaccessible is an ancient fishing village that has become an international symbol of the Italian Riviera's style and class. Portofino has always been the resort of choice for chic Italian families, who return year after year.

Portofino's stunning town square and harbour, surrounded by brightly painted houses, have made Portofino the world's most photographed port. It is rustic yet elegant, provincial yet cosmopolitan, relaxed yet bustling. Stunning villas of the rich and famous are visible all along the hilly coast, with views to the rocky shores of the Ligurian Sea. During high season, many of the world's most expensive yachts will be anchored just outside the port.

Away from the bustle of the village, the Portofino Natural Park offers relaxing walks with excellent views. The hike to the church above the town is a great way to see the sights and build up your appetite. Underwater, the protected reef offers red coral reefs, steep cliffs and ancient shipwrecks.

Ideally situated between Nice and Genoa, Marina di Loano offers a new super yacht marina with state of the art yacht club providing first-class facilities to it guests. In contrast to the marina, the town beyond is a construction of quaint streets scattered with shops and traditional restaurants whose slow food movement advocates the preservation of regional cuisine and the culture associated with it.

Featured on many of the buildings in the old town of Loano are frescoes rich in historical craftmanship which add to to the feeling of a traditional and yet whimsical town. A short walk from the marina, you will also discover a scenic seafront lined with palm trees and some fantastic beaches for relaxing.

Further along the coast towards Genoa, resting within a vast and beautiful inlet you will find the beautiful town of Varazze. With blue flag beaches and a lively town centre, this Italian town is a must-see while sailing the Italian Riveria. The marina, lined with an elegant shopping arcade, incorporates yachting shops and jewellers along with chic restaurants and lounge bars. Eat fresh seafood or pizza overlooking the harbour, or enjoy a cocktail metres from the yacht! 

Like many in the area, this is a town steeped in history and a beautifully picturesque setting - visit the seventeenth-century Carmelite monastery outside of the town or take a stroll along the promenade, bursting with flora and fauna in the summer months. 

Only a stone's throw from Monaco and the French Riviera, experience an Italian town colloquially known as the "City of Flowers". This Mediterranean resort is also home to its own casino and is soaked in Riviera-style grandeur and has played host to many a royal European exile, such as Empress Elisabeth of Austria, leaving in their wake bourgeois buildings and old world charm. 

Delving deeper into Sanremo, you will discover a more quaint and traditional old town where you can get lost in the history of its twisting narrow streets climbing up the hillside. For a cultural and historical expedition, visit the Fort of Santa Tecla from the 1700s that overlooks the harbour or find yourself a spot on the long stretch of golden sandy beach to enjoy a sea breeze and plenty of sunshine.

The Cinque Terre

The famous Cinque Terre are 5 villages (Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore) set along 18 kilometres of sheer rocky coastline beneath steep terraced hills and vineyards. Here you will find 5 small villages that are built into the rocks between the beach and the hills, famous for their vineyards and local wines. Their sheer remoteness makes them even more magical and intact. Medieval influences are obvious and the dramatic coastal scenery is breathtaking; the winding paths and towering pastel houses are one of a kind.

Lavagna is a charming fishing town that provides a welcome contrast to the celebrated beauty of Portofino. Along a 4km stretch of impeccable beach known as the Cavi di Lavagna, the town exhibits a typically Ligurian structure with small, quiet streets, charming shops and plenty of historically intriguing spots.

Sitting on the Entella River, bordered by abundant olive groves on the hillsides, Lavagna hosts plenty of celebrations in particular recreations of neo-medieval style, the most interesting being the ‘Torta dei Fieschi’. This festival commemorates the wedding that happened in 1230 between Count Opizzo Fieschi and Bianca de Bianchi between 13th to 15th August. An enormous cake, made by the finest Lavanga pastry cooks following the original recipe, is paraded through the streets reuniting the six medieval quarters of Lavagna before being distributed to the people in the crowd.

Ligurian Cuisine

For the foodies amongst you, the Italians are praised for their indulgent Italian delicacies and this goes the same for yachts chartering here and using fresh italian produce. Nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean sea, Ligurian cuisine combines simple fresh flavours both from land and sea. The food you will find along the Italian Riviera is simple, unpretentious and healthy. Expect to find regional specialities such as focaccia and farinata (a thin loaf made from chickpea flour) as well as delicate local wines and a variety of olive oils.

With its many fishing ports, Ligurian cuisine also has a strong seafood base, with fish like anchovy, white bream, sea bass and many others cooked simply with olive oil, capers and other simple seasonings. Of course being Italy, pizzeria and pasta houses are everywhere, serving a good combination of seafood, vegetarian, and meat-based offerings.

Getting There

The main city/airport for the Italian Riviera is in Genoa, where you can easily start your charter, heading South East. Many charterers, however, start in Monaco or other ports of the French Riviera .

Climate and Weather

Liguria has a mild, typically Mediterranean climate. Average temperatures range from 9°C/48°F in January to 23°C/73°F in the summer. There is very little rainfall in the summer, making it ideal for holidays and charters. The weather normally remains pleasant through October, becoming much more unsettled through the winter. The warmth and calm returns in the spring, when it is often delightful to visit the area before the hordes of tourists.

History of Liguria

Originally a collection of fishing ports along the Mediterranean the region has been in the hands of the Romans, Barbarians, the Lombards, Normans and Saracens. Napoleon conquered the region in 1796. Bonaparte's invasion saw the end of the Republic of Genoa which had ruled the region and the seas since the thirteenth century.

Following the fall of Napoleon, Liguria was absorbed into the Kingdom of Savoy and Sardinia, one of the many kingdoms and principalities that were to form unified Italy. That came with the victory of Garibaldi and his army in 1861, when the Duchy of Genoa became the Italian region of Liguria.

The 35.97m/118' motor yacht 'Portofino' (ex. Maribella) was built by Intermarine in Italy at their Savannah shipyard. Her interior is styled by design house Ari Cross-Buchanan and she was completed in 2001. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Luiz de Basto Designs.

Portofino has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 7 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (3412C DITA) 1,330hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 17 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 21 knots with a range of up to 1,267 nautical miles from her 26,874 litre fuel tanks at 14 knots. Her water tanks store around 4,542 Litres of fresh water. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) classification society rules.
