Founded in 1951, today the Venice Yacht Club enjoys an outstanding reputation in the Florida sailing and boating community of private clubs. The Venice Yacht Club Marina is a State of Florida recognized Clean Marina. This recently expanded private facility has 68 member slips as well as a large T-dock to accommodate visiting Florida Council of Yacht Clubs boaters. Our state-of-the-art docks are complete with connections for potable water and pump out, as well as up to 100 amp electrical service. Amenities include a security system, a fire extinguishing system, and a fuel dock. Our members enjoy discounted gas and diesel fuels and full time dockmaster services. What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

PADDLESPORTS

The Marina maintains a fleet of 3 single Kayaks, 1 tandem kayak, and 2 Stand Up Paddleboards which members and transients can schedule and rent through our Dockmaster's office. Our new floating dock gives you the perfect access to easily launch your vessel of choice. Paddlers have seen all kinds of marine wildlife while exploring Robert's Bay and Dona Bay including Manatees, Dolphins, the occasional Turtle and even Stingrays!  Take fishing equipment with you and search for Snook or Sheepshead and relax after at the Tiki Bar.  For your safety we ask that paddlers not venture further than 1.5 miles from VYC and do not venture outside the jetty.

VYC Clean Marina

VENICE – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), together with the Clean Boating Partnership, today recognized Venice Yacht Club as the 210th member of the Florida Clean Marina Program and the 5th in Sarasota County. The program, which recognizes marinas and boatyards for their commitment to the protection of Florida’s natural resources, now boasts 216 Clean Marinas, 31 Clean Boatyards and 10 Clean Marine Retailers statewide.

The Clean Boating Partnership is a consortium of industry leaders who contribute time and input to the Clean Marina, Clean Boatyard, Clean Marine Retailer and Clean Boater programs which DEP administers to protect Florida’s waterways. The partnership includes DEP, Marine Industries Association of Florida, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, University of Florida Sea Grant Program, United States Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary.

With more than one million registered motorized vessels in Florida, environmental education within marine industries is the first step toward safeguarding the state’s natural resources. Message from the Chairperson: Updated June 2024 Dear Venice Yacht Club Members

It is hard to believe that we are more than halfway through our fiscal year! And what a year it has been already! Thanks to our many generous supporters, we have a budget of $150,000 in gifts to donate this year (including the VYC to VYBA pass through). From November 1st through to May 31, during the first grant cycle, we have already made grants of $91,550. Please see the Grant History for the list of the 2024 recipients to date. Our first event in 2024 was the VYCCF Wine Auction on January 10. This wide selection of special wine was donated by the generous family of Lynne Colyer. We raised more than $13,000 at that very fun event! Our major fundraising event this year was the Annual Bike Ride for a Better Community which this year also included a walking course. Unfortunately, for the first time in seven years, the weather did not cooperate. However, we did have about 50 intrepid riders and walkers, and over 200 individuals who enjoyed a delicious breakfast! And we raised close to $109,000, which surpassed our goal of $100,000! Thanks to everyone who participated, sponsors, riders’ walkers, and the many volunteers who helped make this a special and safe event! Jazz Under the Stars was, as usual, a wonderful success! The VHS jazz band played for the third year in a row and are all extraordinarily talented musicians! Venice Yacht Club members have been supporting many worthy organizations since our inception in 2010 we have donated over $1,200,000 to more than 75 different local organizations. The causes we support include Children and Youth services, including youth boating, Mental and Physical Health, Education and Literacy, Hunger, Homelessness, Veterans, and the Environment. Your commitment to helping families in need can continue in perpetuity through a gift to the VYCCF in your will. A lasting gift can provide financial security to many organizations. Together we are Charting a course for a better community

Dear Fellow Club Members: Thursday, April 18, proved to be a picture perfect evening for “Jazz Under the Stars” - starring our very own Venice High School Jazz Band. Many thanks to our Event Committee, VYC Team, and student musicians for organizing this event. As always, your generosity and enthusiastic support of the Charitable Foundation makes our “City on the Gulf” so welcoming. Our Second Cycle grants - totaling $53,702 - will be presented to recipient organizations over the course of the summer and into the fall. Combined with the First Cycle grants, this year’s total exceeded $150,000! As many of you know, we specifically focus our giving in support of Children and Youth services, Mental and Physical Health, Education and Literacy, Hunger, Homelessness, Veterans, and the Environment. This month we are profiling Big Brothers Big Sisters - another outstanding organization that our Foundation supports. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast serves young people from age six through young adulthood in one-to-one mentoring friendships. Each match is supported by a dedicated Match Support Specialist who is always available to provide resources and support specific to the youth’s age. With a mentor in their life, children and teens are empowered to maximize their potential as they grow in their self-esteem, earn better grades, and develop a lifelong friendship with their mentor. Through its 55 years of service, the organization has broadened and enhanced its programs. The school-based programming now includes an expanded focus on reading initiatives and academic success. Middle school and high school programs include workforce and career mentoring. Specifically, high school students meet with their mentors in a business setting, giving students the opportunity to experience what it means to work for a corporation, learn business etiquette, and identify educational requirements for professional success. A notable metric: One hundred percent of seniors that completed the program are continuing their education, joining the military or entering the workforce. Additional measurements of success are also impressive: 99 percent of youth in the Juvenile Justice Mentoring Initiative avoided truancy and 97 percent of at-risk students were promoted to the next grade. Joy Mahler, President and CEO, says it best: “For 40 years, I have been blessed to experience the mentoring of thousands of youth across our communities, each matched with a dedicated adult. Our mentoring inspires youth to reach their full potential, and it continues to be the premiere strategy to transform communities. Dear Fellow Club Members: Thank you all for your generous support for our annual Jazz Under the Stars! Once again, we are indebted to our own Venice High School and their amazing jazz ensemble for a wonderful evening dedicated to such a great cause. Year to date for our 2024 FY we have donated $72,000.00 which places us well on our way of budgeted gifting of $150,000.00. This month, we want you to get to know one of these: Habitat for Humanity of South Sarasota County. This well-known organization has been dedicated to building or renovating safe, affordable and energy efficient homes for those in need since 1992. The organization aims to empower families by providing them with homeownership opportunities and financial education to ensure success. Following a thorough selection process, qualified individuals must invest over 300 hours of “sweat equity” by working alongside skilled and talented volunteers. This year, we are very pleased to announce that the Venice Yacht Club is sponsoring its ninth (yes, our ninth!) Habitat for Humanity house through the CCTCP (Community Contribution Tax Credit Program). This CCTCP program is a little different, because the house, which is in North Port, has already been built, and has a wonderful, deserving family living in it! Over the past 10 years, the Venice Yacht Club has been able to work with Habitat for Humanity, and using this Tax Credit Program, has given the equivalent of over $700,000 towards the nine houses. In addition, many members of the yacht club have donated hundreds of volunteer hours to help build the previous eight houses. Everything from grouting floors, putting up sheetrock, painting, or laying sod. Hard work, but the feeling of accomplishment you get is amazing! Although we will not need volunteers at the VYC 2024 house, please contact Sylvia Hollister if you would be interested in volunteering at any of the other Habitat houses currently under construction. Venice nets $2.2 million with five-euro tax charge for day-trippers

Venice on Sunday wraps up a pilot program charging day-trippers an entrance fee , more than $2.2 million richer and determined to extend the levy, but opponents in the fragile lagoon city called the experiment a failure.

Several dozen activists gathered outside the Santa Lucia train station overlooking a teeming canal on Saturday to protest the 5-euro ($5.45) levy that they say did little to dissuade visitors from arriving on peak days, as envisioned.

“The ticket is a failure, as demonstrated by city data,” said Giovanni Andrea Martini, an opposition city council member.

Over the first 11 days of the trial period, an average of 75,000 visitors were recorded in the city. Martini said that is 10,000 more each day than on three indicative holidays in 2023, citing figures provided by the city based on cellphone data that tracks arrivals in the city.

Venice tests 5-euro entry fee for day-trippers as the city grapples with over-tourism

The 5-euro or $5.36 entry fee, authorities hope, will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days and make the city more livable for residents.

Venice imposed the long-discussed day-tripper tax on 29 days this year, mostly weekends and holidays, from April 25 through mid-July. The project, delayed by the pandemic, was heralded by UNESCO member states when they decided against a recommendation to place the city on its list of world heritage sites in danger.

Over the last two and a half months, nearly 438,000 tourists have paid the tax, raising revenues of some $2.4 million, according to AP calculations based on data supplied by the city. Officials said the money would be used for essential services, which cost more in a city traversed by canals, including trash removal and maintenance.

The levy was not applied to people staying in hotels in Venice, who are already charged a lodging tax. Exemptions also applied to children under 14, residents of the region, students, workers and people visiting relatives, among others.

The city’s top tourism official, Simone Venturini, has indicated that the levy will be continued and reinforced. A proposal to double the fee to 10 euros is being considered for next year, a city spokesman said.

Officials promised steep fines for scofflaws, but in the end none were given during checks at entry points, which varied from a low of 8,500 to a high 20,800 a day over the period. City officials say that is because they wanted a soft launch. Critics say it resulted in a downward trend in payments as visitors understood there was no risk in avoiding the payment.

UNESCO calls Italy’s ban on cruise ships in Venice ‘good news’

The chief of the United Nations culture agency hailed Italy’s ban on big cruise ships in the heart of Venice.

Opponents of the plan say it failed to make the city more livable for residents, as intended, with the narrow walkways and water taxis as crowded as ever. They want policies that encourage repopulation of Venice’s historic center, which has been losing residents to the more convenient mainland for decades, including placing limits on short-term rentals.

There are now more tourist beds in the canaled historic center than official residents, whose numbers stand at an all-time low of 50,000.

“Wanting to raise this to 10 euros, is absolute useless. It makes Venice a museum,” Martini said.

Many of the banners at Saturday’s protest also indicated growing concern about the system of electronic and video surveillance that the city introduced in 2020 to monitor cellphone data of people arriving in the city, which is the backbone of the system to control tourism. Placards included warnings about use of personal data and a lack of data privacy.

“The access ticket is a great distraction for the media, which only speaks about this 5 euros, which will become 10 euros next year,’’ said Giovanni Di Vito, a Venice resident active in the campaign against the tourist tax. “But no one is focusing on the system for surveillance and control of citizens.”

Membership in the Venice Yacht Club gives you full privileges at all the other 36 fellow member clubs in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs ( FCYC ). In addition, many other clubs in the area offer reciprocal programs for Venice Yacht Club members. Some are annual, and others are summer only (will post here when available). This page will be updated as the information changes, so check back often.
