Cruising The Past Cruise News

California’s old movie palaces new video, the world’s largest yachts.

Posted by: Michael Grace November 5, 2010

THE PAST: J. P. Morgan built the CORSAIR at the height of the Great Depression.  She was a classic yacht and reflected a style of life now totally something of cruising the past.

THE FUTURE: 2010 – The largest yacht in the world.

Cruising the past and future: The World’s Largest Yachts in 2010 …

The world’s super yachts are some of the biggest and most expensive toys of the super rich, floating palaces with unique features that can carry price tags into the hundreds of millions.

Super yachts are privately owned vessels that are professionally crewed and are found in the greatest abundance in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and the Middle East.

Cruising The Past presents its annual list of the largest yachts currently on the water, giving owners the bragging rights of having one of the world’s largest boats, and at times, competing with each other.

Although some of these yachts have not yet had their first voyage, the vessels not yet on the water are expected to be delivered before the end of 2010.

So, which super yachts rank as the largest in 2010?

At approximately 437 feet, the Al Miqab, is the 10th largest yacht in the world. Owned by Qatar’s Emir Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, it was launched in 2008 and is estimated to value between $250 and $300 million. The vessel is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, awarded “Motor Yacht of The Year” and “Best Interior Design” at the World Super yacht Awards in 2009.

The Al Mirqab can accommodate up to 60 guests and 60 crew members and features a helicopter landing pad, a Jacuzzi on deck, a movie theater and an on-board elevator. With gross tonnage of 5511 tons, the hull is made of steel with an aluminum superstructure and is nearly 64 feet at its widest point. She sails under the flag of the Cayman Islands.

Built by Fincantieri Yachts and designed by Monaco’s Espen Oeino designers, the Serene is set to launch in 2010 and is currently being outfitted, according to SuperYachtTimes.com. When completed, it will be the largest yacht ever to be built in Italy.

The yacht began construction in 2007 and is considered to be one of the most technologically advanced super yachts currently being built. It features seven decks, two helicopter landing platforms, storage for a large submarine and a large internal seawater pool.

Number 8 – Savarona

Once the world’s largest yacht, the Savarona was built in 1931 and had a length that was certainly ahead of its time. Originally intended for Presidential use, the vessel is owned by Turkey but had been leased to a number of clients in recent years. However on September 30th 2010, the vessel was reverted back to the Turkish state after being involved in a prostitution scandal involving a Kazakh businessman.

The first yacht to be built by German-based Blohm and Voss, it cost $4 million to construct ($57 million in 2010 dollars) it is known for its 282 foot gold-trimmed grand staircase, as well as its library, swimming pool and Turkish bath.

Owned jointly by Oracle founder Larry Ellison and media mogul David Geffen, the Rising Sun is rumored to have been commissioned by Ellison to eclipse Paul Allen’s Octopus in size. Built in 2004 and refitted in 2007, the vessel has accommodation for up to 16 guests and 45 crew members.

It is estimated that the yacht costs $13 million annually to maintain and cost in excess of $200 million to build. The Rising Sun has also become so popular that it has spawned its own fan site, YachtRisingSun.com, which features videos and postings related to the ship.

Number 6 – Al Salamah

The sixth largest yacht in the world is the Al Salamah, owned by Saudi Arabia’s defense minister Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz. Built in Germany by HDW and Lurseen Yachts, much of the ship is kept secret, but it is believed to have over 80 rooms, a helipad and an indoor swimming pool with a glass roof.

During its construction it was code named “Mipos,” standing for “Mission Impossible” because it was built after only 2 years and cost in excess of $200 million. She can accommodate up to 40 guests and 96 crew-members and was last refitted in 2009, a decade after her first launch.

Number 5 – El Horriya

The fifth largest yacht in the world is also one of the oldest super yachts still in operation. El Horriya was originally built in London in 1865 for the King of Egypt and the length was extended in 1872 and in 1905 and last refitted in 1987.

The yacht is berthed out of Alexandria and is listed as a training ship by the Egyptian Navy, but it still has the capacity for carrying up to 160 crew-members.

Number 4 – Prince Abdulaziz

Owned by the Saudi Royal Family, the Prince Abdulaziz was the largest yacht built in the 20th century, first setting sail in 1984. The vessel is used by the Saudi Royal Family for both official business and personal voyages.

At its widest point, the Prince Abdulaziz measures 60 feet and has a superstructure and hull composed of steel. She can accommodate up to 64 guests and 65 crew-members, carrying a gross tonnage of 5092 tons.

Number 3 – Al Said

Another royal super yacht makes the list, owned by the Sultan of Oman. The vessel features 6 decks and a concert room capable of accommodating a 50 piece orchestra. At its widest point, the ship measures nearly 79 feet across.

The Al Said was completed in 2008 and was designed by Espen Oeino International, which is the same company that designed Paul Allen’s Octopus. The yacht can accommodate as many as 70 guests and up to 154 professional crew-members.

Number 2 – Dubai

Although currently owned by Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, the yacht was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. The construction was originally delayed until 2001 when Sheik Mohammed bought out the project for a rumored $300 million.

The vessel includes luxurious interior designs, including fine fabrics and handmade mosaics, a dramatic spiral staircase with color-changing glass steps, numerous VIP and guest suites and 7 decks. She also has a mosaic swimming pool, several Jacuzzis and the helicopter pad can service a helicopter in excess of 10 tons. The Dubai has room for 115 people including crew and guest staff and boasts a range of 8,500 miles.

Sheik Mohammed has also been reportedly considering an extension to the Dubai, adding up to 8 feet in order to reclaim the title of world’s largest. For now, however, it remains at the number 2 spot.

With a reported price tag of nearly $1.2 billion, the Eclipse is not only the largest yacht, but also the most expensive. The Eclipse is due to be delivered later this year to Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is known worldwide for big spending on everything from super yachts to England’s Chelsea Football Club.

The Eclipse has two helicopter pads, 11 guest cabins, 2 swimming pools, exterior fireplace and a dance hall. The vessel is also equipped with intruder detection systems and a German-built missile defense system, while bullet-proof glass and armor plating in the master suite and bridge. Abramovich also made news in 2009 when he had an “anti-paparazzi” shield installed, which reportedly uses lasers to detect a camera and ruin any photographs taken by it with a flash of light.

The Eclipse also features a three-person submarine and can accommodate up to 30 guests and 75 crewmembers. Although much of the details of the ship have yet to be confirmed, estimates place the ship between 533 and 557 feet long. It was delivered for testing in September 2010 and is expected to be delivered to Abramovich before the end of the year.

The top 10 largest yachts in the world in 2012

By Adrian Prisca

Updated on May 20, 2023

Our readers have probably been waiting for a list of the top 10 largest yachts in the world for a long time, and here it is. The prides of their respectful owners, these mind blowing yachts constantly roam the waters of the Middle East, the Mediterranean and Caribbean, depending on the season.

Priced at hundreds of millions, these yachts are some of the most amazing and luxurious things ever built. This list is surely going to change a lot in the next years, because new, fantastic, yachts are built every year, but at the moment, these are the top 10 largest yachts in the world in 2012. Let’s start with no.10.

el horriya yacht

This motor yacht measures 134 meters in length and was launched by Fincantieri yachts in 2011. Espen Oeino was given the challenge to design this magnificent vessel’s exterior and to engineer it, while its interior is the work of Reymond Langton Design. The building process had started back in 2007, the Serene supposedly being one of the most technologically advanced superyachts ever built. If boasts with an 18.5 meter beam and a total of seven decks, in addition to the two helicopter landing pads, a massive internal water pool – adaptable to be used for tender docking – and storage for a large submarine.

  • 9. Rising Sun

el horriya yacht

The Rising Sun is a proud motor yacht that measures 138.4 meters from top to toe, the equivalent of 454.1 ft. It was built in 2004 by Lurssen Yachts and boasts with a Sercombe Design–penned down interior. It has undergone a refitting process during 2007. With its steel hull and aluminum superstructure, along with a beam that measures no less than 18.5 meters (60.7 ft) and a 5 meter long draft (16.4 ft), the Rising Sun can reach the astonishing speed of 28 knots, being able to cruise at 26 knots. It can accommodate a total of 16 guests, assisted by a crew of 45.

  • 8. Al Salamah

el horriya yacht

Measuring a stunning 139.3 meters in length (457.02 ft) and having been built in 1999, the Al Salamah was designed by Terence Disdale, both inside and outside. Having been refitted in 2009, it sports a steel hull and aluminum superstructure with a beam measuring 23.5 meters (77.1 ft) and a draft of 4.8 meters (15.75 ft.). It can reach a top speed of 22 knots flat out and can cruise at 17 knots, drawing fuel from its 840,000-litre fuel tanks. It can host 40 guests and 96 crew members.

el horriya yacht

Yas, ADM Shipyard’s brainchild launched in November 2011 measures 141 meters in length. Initially named the Swift141, Yas was the largest yacht launched in 2011 and one of the most important to date. It boasts with a narrow profile built on a steel hull of a deprecated Royal Dutch Navy frigate built back in 1978.

The lightweight design and composite superstructure allows the Swift141 to reach speeds of 26 knots, backed by the modern diesel engines and variable-pitch propellers. Designed on the exterior and inside by Pierrejean Design, based in Paris, Yas features fluid curves, sleek lines and a massive surface covered in glass. It can host up to 60 guests and can cruise at a transoceanic range at 20 knots, thanks to its green fuel economy.

  • 6. El Horriya

el horriya yacht

Previously named Mahroussa, the 145.72 meter (478.1 ft) long El Horriya motor yacht was built in 1865 by the Samuda Bros., based in London. Its extremely sophisticated exterior design and intricate engineering were possible thanks to the extensive work of Sir Oliver Lang. The latest refitting that concerned this massive vessel has been done in 1987. It can reach a top speed of 16 knots, cruises at 13 knots and can accommodate up to 160 crew members for the smoothest and the most relaxing cruises possible.

el horriya yacht

It was meant to be the 4 th largest yacht in the world, boasting with an unofficial length of 147 meters (482.3 ft). It has recently left the construction site at Lurssen, in Bremen, Germany and is now ready to cruise through the most idyllic seas in the world. The technical and numerical data that characterize this yacht are at the moment hidden under a veil – all we know is that it measures somewhere between 144 meters and 147 meters in length, being the second largest yacht ever built by the fabled, German yacht manufacturer Lurssen, following the 155 meter Al Said.

  • 4. Prince Abdulaziz

el horriya yacht

It measures a stunning 147 meters in length (482.3 ft) and was custom built by Helsingor Vaerft, from Helsingor, Denmark. Finished in 1984, its exterior design and engineering bear more sophistication than most of the vessels of today, thanks to Maierform Maritime Technology. Prince Abdulaziz’s interior was designed by David Hicks, while Maierform Maritime Technology tended to its exterior.

Having undergone a refitting process in 2005, it is equipped with a state of the art stabilization system, reducing the roll motion effect, thus creating a much smoother cruise. The yacht’s beam measures 18.3 meters in length (60 ft) and its draft – 4.88 meters (16 ft). Backed by a steel hull and superstructure, it can reach a maximum speed of 22 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots. It is able to accommodate up to 64 guests and 65 crew members.

el horriya yacht

Custom built in 2008 by the same Lurssen Yachts from Bremen, which we’ve been mentioning for quite a lot of times during this article, it measures 155 meters in length. The Al Said motor yacht’s exterior was designed by Espen Oeino, while its interior bears the signature of Redman Whitely Dixon.

It boasts with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, as her beam measures 24 meters (78.74 ft) and the draft – 5.2 meters (17.06 ft). The magnificent Al Said can cruise at speeds of 22 knots and offers accommodation for 70 guests, assisted by 154 crew members.

el horriya yacht

Built in 2006 by Platinum Yachts, the Dubai is the second largest private yacht in the world. It measures a whopping 162 meters and features an aluminum superstructure, steel hull and elegant lines, all penned down by the fabled designer Andrew Winch. Platinum Yachts tended to the super interiors of the Dubai, which mix together bold tones, rare fabrics and super, handmade mosaics. The showpiece of the yacht is a majestic staircase, which sports glass steps that automatically change color.

In addition, the Dubai boasts with a split-level owner’s deck, a number of VIP and guest suites, a huge social area comprising the main lounge with a large, red sofa as centerpiece, plus a crew area for up to 155 members. Overall, the Dubai features 7 decks, including a plethora of sunbathing spots, several Jacuzzis and a stunning mosaic swimming pool.

Furthermore, it can also host a helicopter of up to 9.5 tons along with two 10-meter long tenders. Its displacement goes as high as 9,150 tons, not a problem for the Dubai in reaching a top speed of 26 knots. The 8,500 miles range at 25 knot cruising speeds, thanks to its four MTU diesel engines, are the cherries on the cake for this magnificent vessel.

el horriya yacht

Owned by the fabled Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, this immense vessel matches the expectances of the magnate. It can accommodate 36 guests in 18 cabins, in addition to the 70 members who carefully and actively ensure a relaxing cruise. Measuring 164 meters in length (538,06 ft), it has no problem in hosting a 3-man leisure submarine and two large swimming pools, of which one measures 16 meters in length and has an adjustable depth feature that can convert it into a dance floor.

Furthermore, there’s an exterior fireplace on the yacht, 6 tenders and enough room for 3 helicopters. The construction of the Eclipse had finished in 2010, at the Blohm + Voss shipyard, in Hamburg, while the interiors were penned down by Terence Disdale Design. Before its official launch, the yacht was covered by a curtain of secrets and mysteries, the pressing having done all sorts of speculations in connection to it.

Your mouths are definitely drooling by now and you’re probably supporting your dreamy heads with your hands. Stay tuned, though, as this list is going to be topped soon by the Azzam, which will reportedly measure 179.83 meters (590 feet) in length. And its price tag will be as stunning as its length – $620 million. See you all soon!

is that money and happiness go together

All fantastic yachts, it’s nice to see a detailed list of the top 10 as there’s so many around now. I read Abramovich gave away his previous superyacht to his business partner and then had the Eclipse made. I wonder if he will do the same again to try to beat the Azzam when it’s fully launched! It’s supposed to be fully built by the end of 2013, can’t wait to see it fully finished! Hopefully more places will be built to accommodate superyachts of this size so we can see them in more locations!

The 10 Largest Yachts in the World

There was a time when a yacht of 50m was considered to be a large yacht. But times, they are a changing… In 2015, a yacht needs to be well in excess of 120m to even get into the Top 10!

Here’s a countdown of the current Top 10 largest yachts in the world:

10. AL SALAMAH – 139.29m (457ft)  AL SALAMAH was delivered to her owners in 1999. The project was started by HDW in Kiel, Germany and the yacht was finished at the Lurssen shipyard in Bremen, Germany. AL SALAMAH was known as “Project MIPOS” during the yacht’s construction, standing for mission possible! At the time of her delivery, she was the 3rd largest yacht in the world but has rapidly slipped down the rankings every year since which is a sign of how larger and larger yachts are being built. The yacht has a capacity of 36 guests plus crew. Very little is known about the yacht other than that she was built for the Saudi Arabian Royal Family. The fact that this superyacht now flies the flag of Bahrain may be a clue as to who the current owners are. AL SALAMAH is often to be found along with many other larger superyachts in the port of Piraeus, Greece.

Superyacht Al Salamah

9. OCEAN VICTORY – 140m (459ft)  OCEAN VICTORY is a 140m motor yacht built by the Fincantieri shipyard of Italy and delivered to her owner in 2014. The yacht’s exterior lines are the work of Espen Oeino with interiors by Alberto Pinto. The yacht is believed to have no less than 6 swimming pools and a top speed of 19.6 knots. The construction and delivery of this superyacht was highly secretive and very little is known of the yacht or her ownership. This is the yacht that knocked David Geffen’s RISING SUN out of the top 10 largest yachts.

Ocean Victory superyacht in Montenegro

8. YAS – 141m (463ft) This unusual yacht was built at the ADM shipyard in Abu Dhabi, UAE. YAS was constructed on the hull of 1970s Dutch Navy frigate that was purchased by the Abu Dhabi Navy. It is believed that a second very similar superyacht project is underway, also based on the hull of a naval frigate.

7. EL HORRIYA – 145.7m (478ft) EL HORRIYA is the Presidential yacht of Egypt. The yacht was built in the UK in 1865 and was present at the opening of the Suez Canal four years later. The yacht lives in Alexandria, where she is looked after by the Egyptian Navy.

Classic yacht El Horriya

6. PRINCE ABDULAZIZ – 147m (482ft) PRINCE ABDULAZIZ was built in Denmark in 1984 as the Royal Yacht of the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. The yacht’s home port is Jeddah but during summer months, she can sometimes be seen in the Mediterranean, often in Cannes, France and in Marbella, Spain. Despite constant refits, the yacht is showing her age and a replacement modern superyacht is likely on the way.

Yacht Prince Abdulaziz

5. TOPAZ – 147.25m (483ft) TOPAZ is the third largest yacht ever delivered by the Lurssen shipyard of Germany. Amazingly, Lurssen were involved in the construction of no less than six of the top 10 largest yachts! The yacht was delivered in 2012 and her owner is believed to be from the UAE.

Superyacht TOPAZ

4. AL SAID – 155m (508ft) AL SAID is the yacht of the Sultan of Oman. This superyacht is believed to have a top speed of around 25 knots. The yacht is said to accommodate 65 guests, looked after by a crew of 150. The yacht features a concert hall that it is said can accommodate a 50-piece orchestra!

Yacht Al Said

3. DUBAI – 162m (531ft) DUBAI is the Royal Yacht of Dubai and belongs to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The yacht was purchased by the Dubai Government as a unfinished project having initially been commissioned by Prince Jefri of Brunei before the project was abandoned in 1998. The yacht was eventually launched by Platinum Yachts in 2006 and is based unsurprisingly in Dubai.

Superyacht Dubai

2. ECLIPSE – 162.5m (533ft) Until recently, ECLIPSE was the largest yacht in the world. This immense superyacht was delivered to her Russian owner in late 2010 by the Blohm + Voss shipyard of Germany after a five year construction period. ECLIPSE features a 16m swimming pool, the largest ever installed on a yacht. The yacht also accommodates three helicopters! This yacht is thankfully used by her owner a great deal and is seen in locations all over the world.

ECLIPSE yacht Roman Abramovich

1. AZZAM – 180m (590ft) Current holder of the title of the largest yacht in the world. AZZAM was like many on this list, built by the Lurssen shipyard in Germany. The project was a highly secretive one and very little is known about AZZAM other than that the yacht is believed to be capable of an astonishing 31+ knots due to her groundbreaking water-jet systems!

7 Drool-Worthy Superyachts You Wish You Owned

Goals, people.

How does a man measure his wealth? Physical fitness? Inner peace? Career success? All of the above? Wrong. With yachts: giant, ostentatious, luxurious water mansions. For a little inspiration, check out these seven seaworthy vessels sure to strike jealousy into the hearts of lesser men from leagues away. All aboard.

7. El Horriya 478 feet long Standing (err… floating) at 478 feet long, the El Horriya is absolutely monstrous. Not only is it the oldest ship on this list, having seen its first public appearance for the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal in 1869, but it is also the only steam-powered one.

Today, after enduring several lengthenings, upgrades, and owners, the El Horriya serves as the “Presidential Yacht” for the Egyptian Navy. She ain’t as pretty as she used to be, but at nearly 500 feet long, we’re not about to pass judgment on the old girl.

6. Prince Abdulaziz 483 feet long This massive mariner, built in 1984 for a cool $184-million, currently belongs to King Abdullah, of Saudi Arabia. The interior was designed by the famous David Hicks, and melds modern colors with classic décor. Aside from a killer interior design scheme (because who really gives a shit about that?), the Prince Abdulaziz comes with its own movie theater, a main deck supposedly modeled after the Titanic (Uhhhh…?) and, get this — its own hospital. It is even rumored to carry surface-to-air missile controls, but these are unconfirmed.

5. Topaz 484 feet long Sliding past the Prince Abdulaziz by a single foot, this behemoth boat, released in May 2012, has everything a man could ever want; a full dining hall, a movie theater, a gym, two helicopter pads, a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, and a large conference room, for when business mixes with pleasure. Powered by two 8,000 horsepower diesel motors and with a maximum speed of 25+ knots, this super yacht boogies in style.

4. Al Saïd 509 feet long Al Saïd, owned by the Sultan Qaboos of Oman, is one of the most secretive super yachts in the world. Built by the famous shipbuilding company Lurssen, it stands at a massive 509 feet long, is comprised of six full decks, has accommodations for up to 65 guests, and plays home to a movie theater, helicopter pad, and a world class concert hall worthy of the goddamn New York Philharmonic! And who manages it all? Well, the 150-person crew, of course.

3. Dubai 531 feet long It’s only fitting that one of the most regal ships on this list is named after one of the world’s most wealthy cities—and, naturally, owned by one of that city’s most wealthy residents.

The Dubai, which clocks in at an astonishing 531 feet long, cost $400 million to build, and currently belongs to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashit Al Maktoum, the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai and Prime Minister of the UAE. The massive ship can accommodate 24 guests in its owner’s suite, VIP suites, and guest suites. The buoyant abode’s more ridiculous details include a full movie theater, a club, a helicopter pad (complete with its own Blackhawk Helicopter), AND A SUBMARINE. YES, THIS YACHT COMES WITH ITS OWN SUBMARINE.

2. Eclipse 536 feet long Owned by Chelsea Football Club owner and Russian business mogul Roman Abramovich, the Eclipse shares pretty similar accommodations to the Dubai – save for two massive swimming pools and its $522 million price tag. It includes the typical 24 guest cabins, two helicopter pads (with room for a third in an onboard hangar), a slew of hot tubs, several launch boats and, yes, a submarine. Requiring a crew of 70  to run the ship and serve guests, the Eclipse is more of a floating hotel than a private yacht.

1. Azzam 590 feet long Cruising in (ha!) at an astounding 590 feet long, Azzam is, by far, the largest super yacht in the world. The yacht was allegedly commissioned by Khalifa Al Nahyan, but is currently listed for charter (without a price), which is a popular way of avoiding European taxation standarxs. Azzam is powered by two gas turbines and two diesel engines, which top it out an unbelievable 32 knots. This Azzam, too, comes with its own submarine, as well as its own 100% confirmed missile defense system. And with a total estimated cost of over $600 million, it is also the most expensive super yacht ever constructed.

Adastra Super Yacht is Cool, But These 6 Dream Boats Are Even More Badass

They say there are yachts, and then super yachts. Wrong. There are yachts, super yachts, and Middle-East super yachts.

The Middle East has long been a luxury goods and services nirvana. Here, you can find anything you want, as long as you have the cash to pay; and there’s no shortage of buyers.

Arab rulers and businessmen alike love their expensive toys and are always seeking out bigger, better, more sophisticated and advanced yachts, cars, and planes. After all, the Qatari royal family allegedly own a whole fleet of Lamborghinis in duck-egg blue.

Recently, a new type of super yacht was launched in China: the Adastra. At 140 feet, the sleek yacht is not long enough to eclipse yachts belonging to other members of the world’s super-rich, but it is packed with new design features. Featuring everything one would need on a leisurely cruise through paradise, it features spacious living quarters and can be controlled from an iPad 164 ft away.

It is seriously cool. However, it’s a minnow by Middle East standards. A mere whippersnapper of a boat, which most sheikhs would release straight back into the sea. Here's how badly it compares to the Middle East’s fleet of similar luxury yachts:

1.  The Prince Abdulaziz (KSA)

This 482 ft yacht is owned by the royal family of Saudi Arabia and named after its first king. Built in Denmark and commissioned in 1984, this vessel is fast and luxurious. With enough room for 64 guests – Saudi Royals are an enormous extended family – the yacht is equipped for pleasure. Featuring stylish interiors and the obligatory helicopter landing pad, the ship is able to cruise the world in comfort.

Unique Feature: It apparently has an onboard garage for all the cars that the royal family will need abroad, including Rolls-Royces, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis; and spares of course.

2. The Dubai (UAE)

Launched in 2006 and originally destined for Prince Jeffri of Brunei, the Dubai was acquired by Prince Mohammed Rashid al-Maktoum, the ruler of the United Arab Emirates. Named after the city that epitomizes opulence and wealth, the Dubai is 531 ft long and weighs 12,500 tons. It took ten years to build and is equipped, as one would expect, with all the necessary razzmatazz fit for a royal yacht. It has been spotted cruising the waters in the Mediterranean.

Inside the yacht features a spiral glass staircase, which is bathed in natural light, as well as fully marble halls. All this together with a striking mosaic pool means that visitors and royalty alike can relax, recline, and watch the world breeze by.

Unique Feature: Its upper deck is made of aluminium to accommodate the ship’s gracious architectural curves. Also, a special dock had to be designed on an exclusive island in the UAE, to accommodate the ship away from prying eyes.

3. Al Said (Oman)

Oman is a quiet country that doesn’t make much of an international splash. The same, however, cannot be said of its Royal yacht the Al Said. At 508 feet, the yacht will stand out from the crowd at any regatta.

Owned by the royal family of Oman headed by Sultan Qaboos, the ship has many features. Sporting a large indoor pool, helicopter landing pad, and sumptuous interiors, the yacht is fully fit for royal travel.

Unique Feature: To avoid snoopers and detection, the ship was code-named “Project Sunflower” during its construction period.

4.   El Horriya (Egypt)

Hosni Mubarak is in jail and frequently ruing his downfall. Maybe he reminisces about the Egyptian presidential yacht, its luxuries, and the numerous cruises he enjoyed whilst ruling the country with an iron fist. A downfall from power is always cruel.

At 478 feet long, the El Horriya is one of the biggest and oldest luxury yachts in the world. Built in 1865, the ship is able to carry over 160 passengers in luxurious style through the Nile and the Mediterranean.

Now, there is a debate in Egypt as to what should happen to the ship post-Mubarak. Some wish to keep it, others sell or scrap it. What is certain is that it is one of the few ships in the world that can boast an impeccable pedigree of service, harking back to a forgotten age when luxury travel was the norm.

Unique Feature: The ship is run by the Egyptian navy and goes to sea three times a year, usually for a day or two.

5. El Mirqab (Qatar)

El Mirqab (Qatar)

Owned by the Prime Minister of the small island nation of Qatar, the El Mirqab is a ship that is not quite in the super league of large yachts, but nonetheless punches above its weight, like Qatar itself. At 436 ft long, the yacht has ample room for 60 guests and 60 crew.

What El Miraqb lacks in length, it more than makes up for in opulence. Named in 2009 as ‘Motor Yacht of the Year’ and ‘Best Interior Design’ at the World Motor Yacht Awards, the El Mirqab is a gem of the seas.

Inside, you find elegant design and rich decoration married into a sumptuous décor.

Unique Feature: Forbes Magazine ranked it as the world’s second most beautiful yacht against some pretty stiff competition.

6. HMS Tasteless

In the annals of the vulgar and tasteless excesses of the Muammar Gaddafi regime, the yacht apparently commissioned by son Hannibal Gaddafi takes the prize for most vulgar Middle East yacht.

Hannibal – a wanabee professional footballer – was going to pay over $450 million for a private yacht to rival those of billionaires and Gulf Sheikhs. At its heart was to be a tank to hold Hannibal’s shark collection. Weighing in at over 140 tons, the tank is highly reminiscent in design of those in which James Bond finds himself dunked on occasion.

Sadly for him, but happily for Libya, this was not to be.

After the fall of the regime last year, Hannibal fled to Algeria and will likely remain there. In the meantime, the yacht has been sold and will now be a cruise liner, such is the size of it.

Unique Feature: Having everything in such hideous hues of ‘tacky.’

Azzam is currently the biggest yacht in the world. She was proudly built by Lurssen Yachts , who have been involved in the building of 6 out of the world’s 10 largest yachts.

The specifications of this ship are being kept secret. We don’t know who her owner is but it’s rumoured that she was built for a member of the royal family of Abu Dhabi. Her owner can enjoy his personal 56-metre deck, and a wonderful interior created by Terence Disdale’s team. There is also a 16-metre long swimming pool, the largest on any yacht. The yacht car accommodates no less than 3 helicopters. She is owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

She also features a fully equipped hospital, a mosque and a cinema. The yacht is manned by a crew of 65. There are also rumours that she has systems that include surface-to-air missiles, but this fact is unconfirmed.

el horriya yacht

El Horriya (145.7 metres)

El Horriya is a different breed of yacht. In fact, she is a classic vessel – the largest classic yacht in use in the world. She was built in 1865 by Samuda Brothers in the United Kingdom for the Ottoman governor of Egypt, Khedive Ismail, and she was present at the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal in 1869.

In 1872 she was lengthened by 12.1 metres and her original paddle wheel propulsion was removed. Since then she has seen a major rebuild in 1950. In the 70’s the ship was used as a museum, but in 1992 she was made seaworthy again.

Today, El Horriya is the Presidential Yacht for the Egypt Republic. She’s rarely used and can be seen berthed in the port of Alexandria, where she is maintained by the Egyptian Navy.

el horriya yacht

Yas (141 metres)

At only 1 metre longer than Ocean Victory, Yas is a very special vessel. Launched in November 2011 by Abu Dhabi MAR, she was built in Abu Dhabi using the steel hull of a 1978 Dutch-built navy frigate.

The old ship was completely modified and new machinery was added, along with new systems and a luxury interior. It’s estimated that the 141-metre Yas can accommodate 60 guests, and needs a crew of 56 to operate.

Her superstructure is manufactured from advanced composites and glass. Her distinctive silhouette was inspired by the shape of a dolphin. For power, Yas uses 2 MTU diesels and has a top speed of 26 knots.

el horriya yacht

Ocean Victory (140 metres)

Ocean Victory is number 9 in the top 10 biggest superyachts in the world. She was built by Muggiano shipyard in Italy, a Ficantieri owned business. She has 7 decks and her exterior design is signed by Espen Oeino.

Her interior and exterior styling is by Terence Disdale Design from London. Al Salamah was owned by Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia, son of the late King Fahd, Governor of Riyadh. He is Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister and the nation’s Crown Prince. Al Salamah was refitted by Lurssen in 2007.
