8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Kokomo,' the Lightning-Fast 192-Foot Sailing Superyacht
Posted: March 15, 2024 | Last updated: March 15, 2024
2.-SY-Kokomo_Sailing_1-064
The 192-foot Kokomo was the second largest sloop in the world when it launched from New Zealand’s Alloy Yachts shipyard in 2010. It remains the largest fast-cruising sloop available for charter. The yacht’s commissioning owner Lang Walker (who died in January 2024) was a seasoned sailor who gave all three of his yachts the same name.
The first was a 131-foot sloop, which Walker replaced five years later with a 171-footer. The same day he took delivery of his 171-foot sloop, he placed an order for the third and final 192-foot Kokomo, which he planned to use for racing and cruising around the world. He also kept the same design team for all three yachts, with exterior and naval architecture by Ed Dubois and interior by UK’s RWD.
The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’, which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo.
Here are eight unknown facts about one of the most game-changing sailing yachts on the water.
You’re Going to Need a Bigger Boom
When Kokomo was launched, she was the second-largest sloop in the world and carried the largest set of sails made by Doyle Sails in New Zealand. The 23,971-square-foot asymmetric spinnaker is half the size of a professional football field, while the 9,688-square-foot mainsail needs a crane to lift it. Because of the gargantuan size of the sails, the designers entered a new era of spar and winch design, having to “reinvent” the deck equipment—winches, mast, boom, rigging and sails—to cope with the 31.6-ton load on the genoa sheet and 32-ton load on the main sheet clew. The 244-foot carbon mast is the largest ever made by Southern Spars.
A Hidden Lifting Keel
The yacht’s 130-ton lifting keel is one of its most impressive features, though it’s largely left to the imagination. The interior layout is carefully designed so that the keel structure remains hidden. Dubois Naval Architects positioned the keel box to come above the main deck, serving as a partial separation between the bridge and the main salon (see inset). Kokomo was only the second yacht to be fitted with a lifting a keel, the first being 246-foot M5 (ex-Mirabella V), the world’s largest single-masted sailing yacht. This innovative design shortens Kokomo’s 28.5-foot draft when the keel is fully extended, to just 15 feet for shallow waters.
Now You See It, Now You Don’t
Kokomo might be big on technology, but never at the expense of design. The wheelhouse has fold-down computer screens that conceal the navigation equipment when not in use, converting to beautiful carbon counter tops. This design sleight of hand transforms a highly technical area into a tony lounge. It’s a theme that extends to the foredeck, where the yacht’s two tenders are concealed in dedicated lockers. There’s also a fully retractable tender crane that launches the tenders from either side of the boat but disappears out of sight when guests are using the Jacuzzi. “The designated deck lockers were an advanced feature at the time of her launch,” says Wynne, adding that another bonus is that diesel tanks are fully available. “The tenders can be fueled onboard before launching.”
It Takes Just A Few Good Sailors
Kokomo can accommodate up to 10 crew in total, but theoretically it only takes two to sail—a helm person and a sail trimmer. That sounds almost impossible given the size and complexity of yacht. But all sails are controlled by joystick on the flybridge. And when the boat is in full-on racing mode, there are control stations on both sides, providing visibility of the sails. Thanks to the hydraulics system, the mainsail can be hoisted and lowered on a wireless remote control. Of course, maneuvers like stowing the massive genoa can never be automated. That’s a job for a half-dozen good sailors.
Art On Board
The hallway that leads to the owner’s cabin is lined with a mosaic tapestry made from sea glass woven together with wire. Backlit to create an unusual effect, it’s just one of the eclectic works of art that decorates the interior. The main salon also has a stunning and colorful work of glass art as another example.
Interior Matters
Kokomo is not all tech features. The yacht’s modern interiors combine dark wood floors and calming cream furnishings start in the main salon and continue across the five guest cabins. Penned by British studio Redman Whiteley Dixon, the design carefully wraps around the lifting keel without sacrificing or impeding on any interior guest space. The yacht accommodates up to 10 guests in a master suite, VIP, one double cabin and two twins. There are other accommodations for up to 10 crew. On the foredeck, the Jacuzzi brings another element of outdoor entertainment, bolstered by a sunken cockpit.
World Traveler
The mandate issued by Walker was to create a yacht that was a “quantum leap forward” from his previous yachts, with superior sailing characteristics and guest comfort. The mast’s height is too tall to sail through the Panama or Suez Canals, which meant it would have to be designed to sail around Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Caribbean and Mediterranean. The maiden voyage took the yacht from the New Zealand shipyard to Australia, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. It also spent time at Walker’s private island (pictured above), also named Kokomo. The vessel has since spent many years exploring the Caribbean and Med. It’s based in both regions during the respective cruising seasons, with charters available through Cecil Wright.

Sailing yacht Kokomo: Sophisticated style onboard the 58m super sloop
By B. Roberts
The 58.4m sailing yacht Kokomo is the largest yacht to launch from New Zealand shipyard, Alloy Yachts. The superyacht features a classic flybridge from Dubois Naval Architects and offers innovative performance based designs alongside a truly enviable interior from Tony Dixon of Redman Whiteley Dixon Ltd.
Described by Tony Dixon as “rich and elegant with style of the highest quality” the interior style of sailing yacht Kokomo was designed “to create the epitome of luxurious surroundings onboard a sailing yacht in a practical way”. Kokomo’s interior practicality and rich atmosphere perfectly match with her exterior, built to perform whilst maintaining an air of sophistication.
New custom details include improved cabin layouts, due to extra length available, and attention to stowage and practical issues. Redman Whitely Dixon and Alloy Yachts craftsmen gave the yacht stronger features with cabinet wrap-around corner veneers throughout and contrasting leather stitch work. The deep recessed door panels give a stronger look and help safely recess the handles from protruding out. Redman Whitely Dixon's modern design includes Dark Wenge and light forest teak timbers to accentuate the chocolate brown leather tops and chunky nickel hardware. The saloon features a central TV cabinet designed to hide the Keel box and instead look like part of the feature wall. An Australian artist was commissioned for the unique artwork onboard Kokomo. The artwork drops down to reveal a 60-inch flat screen TV surrounded by special stained sycamore veneers and leather wrapped handrails.
The bar, which uses various materials to match the client's taste, remains modest, using two types of marble, leather panels with glass and nickel hardware. The bar holds a practical focus with high-end equipment making it perfect for entertainment.
There is state of the art navigation systems in the bridge completely integrated into the furniture to portray a technological sophistication which can be hidden when not needed. Alloy Yachts installed sliding dark glass panels and cabinet doors with a flat TV placed on hinges for this purpose. Sailing yacht Kokomo is not only the largest yacht to launch from Alloy Yachts; her Southern Spars mast is the tallest mast ever made in New Zealand, sitting an incredible 74.3m above the water. As Peter Wilson, Kokomo's construction manager commented: "And all this in a beautifully and elegantly styled envelope - that sails like a dream. This is without doubt a yacht that sets the new benchmark by which others will be measured."

The dry statistics of the elegant and sumptuously designed Kokomo can hardly live up to the reality of this incredible brand new superyacht by Alloy Yachts . This is touted as their largest superyacht to date measuring 58.4 meters and without a doubt it is the most elegant and practical to date. Each time they build a yacht Alloy improves on lessons learned from the last. These are hardly formula or template sailing vessels but incorporate state of the art designs, equipment and technology and marry it to style and luxury.
“This is the third yacht we are proud to have built for these clients, from the elegant, performance-oriented designs from Dubois Naval Architects. With each vessel, the owners, Ed Dubois and the Alloy Yachts team have reached new heights of excellence with the design, technology, engineering, performance and quality”, – says Tony Hambrook, Managing Director of Alloy Yachts.
“Alloy Yachts understands sailing yachts and have pioneered many sailing yacht systems. They first built a Dubois-designed yacht in 1989 when they had 30 people. Now they have over 430 people and have moved into a wonderful area when they can deliver 100 per cent on the design, – says Dubois. – Kokomo is a landmark by anyone’s standards, but a particular landmark for us – the 20th Dubois design built by Alloy Yachts. They have done an incredible job, and the new Kokomo is the manifestation of all their experience and understanding. She is also the largest sailing yacht we have put in the water at this time.”
Combining more luxurious spacious cabins (courtesy of her longer hull length) and well-appointed interiors with a practical sailing yacht is no mean feat, but the Alloy superyachts are known for just that. The Kokomo set out to break all records for New Zealand and did just that it is not only the largest super yacht launched by Alloy but also has the largest mast created to date in New Zealand. The Southern mast is an amazing 74.3m tall. The Mainsail on the Kokomo is 883m, the Genoa is 1,151 meters and the Gennaker is 2,227 square meters and holds the distinction of being the largest every produced by Doyle’s.
The navigation on the bridge of Superyacht Kokomo is state of the art but can be artfully hidden when not in use. With wooden cabinets decided to slide down and completely disguise the technogical aspects of the room.
Sophistication is the name of the game with the Superyacht Kokomo and its sleek black hull contrasted by the startling white superstructure give it simple elegance that is mirrored by every detail in the interior and exterior of this superyacht.
The Kokomo draws a little less than five meters when the keel is down and over 8 meters when the keel is up. This is due to an innovation for Alloy, the raise/lower keel where the keel runs through the center of the ship and the entire bulb of the keel can be raised and lowered. The submarine anchors were designed with the high standards of quality and sophistication demanded by Alloy in all their yachts. Manson anchors are used but customized so that the anchors are exactly positioned when retracted and the closure to be almost seamless.
It is this attention to even the smallest of details that give the yachts by Alloy the prestige, and has elevated the name Alloy to one synonymous with luxury. It would do no good to make the most elegant of interiors when the yacht is impractical and Alloy yachts are anything but impractical marrying the artistry of the designer with the skills of a yacht maker. The ambition with the Kokomo as to make a yacht the exceeded any others in terms of interior style and yet was practical for sailing in any weather conditions. They have succeeded once again and each superyacht produced by Alloy outshines the last and just when you think they can do no better Alloy brings out yet another better than the one before.

8 Fascinating Facts About ‘Kokomo,’ the Lightning-Fast 192-Foot Sailing Superyacht

The reference to the yacht’s name has had different explanations over the years, ranging from the pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker played as a child to a nod to the Beach Boys’s song from their 1988 album Still Cruisin’ , which references a fictional utopian island called Kokomo. The island fantasy was brought to life in 2011 when Walker acquired a private island in Fiji’s Great Astrolabe Reef and named it Kokomo .
Fast-Track Sailing
Kokomo was one of the first yachts to be fitted with a hydraulic batt-car system for furling the mainsail, which has cars at each batten end that slot in an outer track on the mast. This alleviates a once-common issue where the luff tape or bolt rope on large sailing yachts became chaffed by the compression of the battens, which often caused the in-boom furling mainsails to fail. “When sailing Kokomo , especially when racing, I am completely impressed with the speed and efficiency of the hydraulic system,” says Kokomo ’s captain, Jeremy ‘Bear’ Wynne, who notes the yacht’s recorded top speed is a very impressive 22 knots. “The jib furlers are some of the fastest I have seen. There is absolutely no shortage of hydraulic power, even with multiple winches running on a jibe—a rarity on a big sailing yacht.”

Kokomo II completes eight-month refit and extension
The 37.5-metre Lloyds motor yacht Kokomo II has emerged from an eight-month refit at Australian yard Rivergate Marina & Shipyard with a three-metre stern extension.
Built in Australia in 1987, Kokomo II returned to its birthplace for refit work having cruised Australia, Fiji and the South Pacific extensively under her current ownership. The yacht checked into the Queensland shipyard for a full repaint, new teak decks and engine overhaul, as well as a new transom and lazarette that saw the yacht's length extended from 34 to 37 metres.
“Adding the transom adds a lot of practicality, function and use without changing the overall lines of the boat,” said Captain Luke Caldwell who has been at Kokomo II ’s helm for 11 years. Rivergate’s general manager approached Caldwell during a routine yard period with the idea of a transom extension in 2019, noting the owner's lifestyle and enjoyment of the water.
“With this project originally planned for five to six months, there were other things like generators, steering pumps, electrical panel system including a new switchboard, PLC system and radar that needed updating, as well as an exterior paint job," explained Caldwell.
The team took the opportunity to carry out further upgrades expanding the scope of work including the engine room which was rewired and replumbed.
The Queensland-based yard has said the refit efforts were a sort of homecoming for the vessel, with over 20 different trades working together to “seamlessly” modernise the yacht while maintaining its charm and beauty. Wright Marine carried out teak deck works, Aus Ships fabricated the transom and doors as well as other features and Millennium Marine Australia undertook the painting work. MPS headed engineering while M2i Electrical Services were responsible for wiring amendments.
Jake Whittle, Production Foreman at Aus Ships, said his team was proud to have been engaged to design and build the extension on the stern of such a notable vessel. “It’s been a fantastic experience for me and our team to be working on a vessel built in the 80s by some of our employee’s relatives or people they’ve known.”
Project manager Marty Johnson has been working at Rivergate for eight years and in the industry for 25 years and said Kokomo II is unique and “retains an elegance of a former era.” The historical yacht was given a warm send-off in mid-January and wasted no time in setting sail for the Sydney Harbour not long after relaunching.
Captain Luke Caldwell acted as the owner’s representative during the refit period.
