Mangusta REV 165

Mangusta ’s latest fleet member is full of surprises.

The Mangusta 165 REV , which was launched this week at the Italian builder’s Viareggio yard, was inspired by the sports cars of the early 20th century and has a ton of distinctive automotive-style features.

As its moniker implies, the 165-footer is the flagship of the new Mangusta REV series of maxi open yachts. It follows in the footsteps of the bestselling Mangusta 165 of which the Overmarine brand has delivered 12 to date. There are, however, noticeable differences between the two. The newcomer has a fresh design and layout that takes creative cues from vintage four-wheelers.

Mangusta REV 165

The first Mangusta REV 165 hit the seas on Monday.  Emilio Bianchi

The vessel’s exterior was penned by designer Igor Lobanov in collaboration with the in-house engineering department. (The duo also designed the Mangusta 104 REV series.) Crafted from composite, the hull is characterized by an aggressive profile and sleek, dynamic lines that Lobanov says were inspired by 1930s rides.

The stern is similar to a car, too. It is fitted with an aft door that opens “like the roof of a convertible” to reveal a secret 387-square-foot beach club. It comes equipped with foldable side terraces that also open up to give you a little more room. (We said there’d be surprises.) Elsewhere outdoors, the sundeck offers a bar, a lounge and a pool, while the foredeck sports another pool flanked by lounges. Oh, and there’s also a garage that can hold a tender and two Jet Skis.

The custom interior, meanwhile, centers around the spacious saloon, which also incorporates large fold-down balconies for extra space. There are four double staterooms and a VIP cabin on the lower deck, while the two-level owner’s stateroom can be found on the main deck. It spans 990 square feet and includes a personal office, a lounge and a full-beam bathroom.

The superyacht has the power of a supercar, too. It is equipped with four 2,600 hp Rolls-Royce engines and four Kamewa waterjets, which together push the vessel to a top speed of 34 knots. To top it off, Mangusta says the vessel uses 30 percent less fuel compared to the previous series.

The Mangusta 165 REV will be on display at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show. The next hull available for sale will be ready for delivery in summer 2023. That’s another nice surprise for you.

The new, revolutionary Mangusta 165 REV has been officially presented. The 50-meter flagship of the new Maxi Open REV range is a celebration of design and functionality, comfort and performance, and is ready to sail the seas and leave its own unmistakable wake.

A project developed by the shipyard’s Engineering Department in collaboration with the renowned designer Igor Lobanov, who had already signed the lines of the Mangusta 104 REV, and who also gave his unmistakable imprint to the new Open model.

Mangusta 165 REV

A distinctive feature, as for all Mangusta, are the large volumes on board, the comfort of the “en plein air” areas and the continuous dialogue between interiors and exteriors. The owner on board can fully enjoy the sea thanks to the multiple areas of privacy or socialization and experience a holiday that can change landscape every day, passing from one location to another in a short time, such as waking up in Portofino and then reach the Costa Smeralda.

Mangusta 165 REV

On the sundeck there is a large area dedicated to socializing with comfortable sofa areas and a bar station located amidships. The immense bow area, of 60 sqm / 645 sq / ft, features a sunbathing area and an infinity-effect pool for moments of absolute relaxation.

The interiors, designed by the Milanese architecture firm M2 atelier, were conceived with warm tones and contemporary solutions with the aim of enhancing the natural light, the dominant feature of this yacht. The full-height windows in the salon minimize the division between interiors and exteriors and create a sophisticated and welcoming environment.

Mangusta 165 REV

The lower deck is reserved for the guest area and can be offered with different customized solutions up to 5 cabins; 4 guests and a VIP or a media & lounge area or gym. A versatility of spaces that is combined with the versatility of performance, with a propulsion system with 4 MTU 16V 2000 M96L 2600 HP engines and 4 Kamewa waterjets, which allow you to reach an exhilarating top speed of 34 knots while maintaining low fuel consumption. Veem gyroscopic stabilizers offer navigation, even at low speeds, and in all sea conditions always with maximum comfort, and with a range of use that can be extended up to 650 miles.

Mangusta GranSport 45: Inside Overmarine's 45 Metre Superyacht

The newest addition to Mangusta’s GranSport line, the 45 is an innovative combination of luxury, space, performance and efficiency, as Sam Fortescue discovers.

Mangusta means “mongoose” in Italian. Cute, but not the most obvious name for a line of luxury yachts. You have to know the backstory. When Giuseppe Balducci established his company in 1985, the chief competition was from a brand called Cobra, by Tecnomarine. It has since faded from view, but Balducci’s choice of name was prescient: the “mangusta” is the only animal capable of slaying the feared serpent.

Back then, Balducci’s genius was to spot the market for a super-fast open boat – the sort of thing that would throw a rooster tail across the sun and keep your hair swept back for days. This is still very much in Mangusta’s DNA, but the brand is edging further and further into the domain of luxury, thanks to last year’s launch of the fast displacement GranSport line. “The idea was to combine speed, long range and comfort,” says commercial director Francesco Frediani. “While she looks sporty, she can cross the Atlantic Ocean and explore uncluttered anchorages.”

That’s no mere boast. The first boat out of the shipyard in Pisa was the 54, and hull No 1 has racked up 20,000 miles crossing the Atlantic, transiting the Panama Canal then turning north to the Arctic Circle. “Anywhere her owner’s dreams led her,” Frediani says. The yard recently sold a second 54, is planning a larger 65, and launched its smaller sister at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the rather beguiling 45. This boat, he says, shares all the features of the 54 and, “fully holds the right to be considered a flagship – if not for her length then for values and features.”

Exterior designer Alberto Mancini is spot on with his interpretation of Mangusta’s sleek, muscular lines. The low black curve of the bridge deck roof barely seems to rise above the bulwarks – it is a picture of aerodynamic design, which Mancini likens to an Aston Martin. And not without justification, because this boat has a top speed of 26 knots, despite her extensive accommodation.

“The GranSport line is clearly inspired by automotive design,” Mancini tells me. “When I drew the GS lines I had in mind a concept of fluid, harmonic and sleek proportions. The superstructure design reminds me of an exotic sports car, but the transparency and the light you get inside the upper deck saloon is impressive, compared to many other yachts that have an aggressive and sporty look but small windows that transmit an idea of claustrophobia, like in a supercar.”

At 440 gross tonnes, there’s plenty of volume to this yacht, so Mangusta hasn’t achieved that speed by paring everything back. The performance is a combination of smart hull design, creating a semi-displacement aluminium hull that allows a range of 3,500 nautical miles at 11 knots, yet is safe and exhilarating with the throttle down. “It’s a bulb-keel hull that cuts through the sea surface without planing. But maintaining the displacement mode even at high speed requires dynamic lift to control the longitudinal trim,” explains naval architect Pierluigi Ausonio , who designed it in collaboration with the technical department at Mangusta. It comes with plenty of power. Some 7,800hp of it, in fact, courtesy of three MTU 2000 M96L units.

This brings us to one of this yacht’s distinguishing features. While two of her engines drive standard prop shafts, the third, on the centreline, powers an innovative Kamewa water-jet pod, which can be used for fine manoeuvring or stealthy cruising. Yet this was something of an afterthought, according to Frediani. “You don’t have real balance with three propellers – the boat always goes in one direction. Initially, the water-jet was just meant to be a booster, then we thought we could make more of it.”

Splitting the power across three engines makes for smaller propellers and thus lower draught; at 2.2 metres it allows this boat to creep into the shallows of the Bahamas, for instance. But as skipper Manuel Battaglia tells me later, the real advantage of the system is its quietness. “During the night, you can choose to navigate at eight knots with the water-jet in complete silence,” he says. It makes for super efficiency and a good night’s sleep during shorter hops when speed is not of the essence. “Manoeuvrability is so good because the jet is right at the back where there are no skegs to get in the way.”

It says much about changing attitudes in yachting that a brand renowned for speed and aggressive, sporty styling is now embracing efficiency. And in another sign of the times, the GranSport 45 interprets luxury as offering simple, uncluttered spaces aboard. One of the first things that strikes you when you see the boat is her acres of teak.

Below the passerelle, a 75-square-metre beach club cantilevers off the transom and extends well inside the boat, down a couple of steps into an area that has the wood-lined feeling of a spa. There’s a transformer platform and two fold-down side terraces; little wings that cleverly connect with the main exterior beach club to create a walk-around space that is deep enough for a sun lounger or a couple of chairs. With the terraces down, natural light and a cool breeze freshen the interior. Importantly, the tender garage is in the bow, so this space never develops the smells, marks or damage associated with storing a wet boat.

Up on the aft deck, the sense of space grows. Here a 75-square-metre expanse of teak is scattered with off-the-shelf designer sofas, chairs and a table. “The furniture is from Italian brands such as Poltrona Frau, Minotti or Flexform, but you won’t find these colours in any catalogue,” says Mangusta’s Isabella Picco. “The owner’s wife wanted specific tones of green-grey and dove grey. She also asked for opaque black–painted steel for all metal finishing instead of chrome steel.”

The effect is understated and elegant, but really what hits you is the room. Move the loose furniture out of the way and you have a venue for a big party. The story is repeated on the upper deck terrace, which features a wet bar, grill and circular dining table. Combine that with the spa pool and infinity pool forward and you have an astonishingly large area for outside living. “If you want to turn it into a party deck, why not?” Frediani says. “We have already designed a table that lowers into the floor so you can dance.”

Each of these different spaces can be fitted with Multiplex carbon bimini poles and, on this yacht, a matching grey awning that can be extended over the pool. There is talk of rigging up a screen here to turn the sunpad and spa pool area into an outdoor cinema. And from the garage hidden under the pool, it is possible to launch the five-metre Williams Dieseljet in three minutes without creating so much as a ripple above. The 45 does everything it can to encourage you outdoors.

Just in case the weather turns during your expedition, there is plenty of interior space too. On this first hull, the main saloon has been turned over entirely to sofas and armchairs, with dining in the upper saloon on nearly five square metres of Kenya black marble. The sense of great volume comes not just from the 2.2-metre headroom, but its combination with floor-to-ceiling windows and mirrors.

To starboard, the window slides aside to create tantalising sight lines of the water, as well as providing natural ventilation. Other than the armchairs and sofas, there’s little clutter in here – no fussy cabinetry and no boxed-out technical areas. It feels very calming. “The study of natural and artificial light was an essential part in construction,” Frediani explains. “By using glass, both transparent and mirrored, to bounce light around the interior and reduce visual barriers to the outside world, Mangusta has succeeded in providing total immersion in the marine environment.” It’s what he sums up as the “fil rouge” that runs throughout the boat – connected spaces with no visual barriers.

But my favourite feature lies further forward, in the full-beam owner’s cabin. Here to starboard, a button sets a whole two-metre-wide section of the wall in motion to create a fold-down balcony. It’s the perfect breakfasting spot as you contemplate the anchorage and it showcases an impressive conjunction of interior design and engineering. As the balcony locks into its horizontal position, a gleaming stainless-steel handrail rises smoothly as if by magic. Cleverly articulated banisters extend up and click into place. When the balcony is closed, this is embedded flush in the balcony wall panel and looks like a piece of interior decor.

The owner’s suite also harbours another impressive feature. Its open-plan bathroom runs the full beam of the forward bulkhead, under the pool, and Mangusta has made the most of this by fitting skylights in the pool bottom. They shed a dappled blue light over the striations of the grey Nuova Lim marble below. It means you can lie in the double bath and enjoy the sun – almost like scuba but without the bulky equipment.

Four double guest cabins on the lower deck are arranged in a cluster at the end of a staircase whose steps appear to float on a cushion of indirect light. Although the volumes are predetermined by the layout, the configuration is flexible. This owner has put two double bunks in the children’s cabin, which is decorated with an original frieze of teddies. The facing cabin has been turned into a kids’ television room or playroom, with a sofa bed for a nanny. In the two VIP cabins, the design is simple. “There are always some small changes to the Minotti headboards and the lamps,” says Picco. The en suites are generous, and continue the grey marble theme with flamed ash cabinetry.

Nowhere is the sporty character of this boat clearer than in the spaceship-like wheelhouse, with double-stitched black leather seating, backlit red stripes and carbon fibre windscreen mullions. “It appeals to a range of owners who want to stand out from the mass of yachts that all look the same,” Mancini says. Some 35 years after Mangusta was established, its new GranSport 45 shows just the same speed and agility as its namesake, the mongoose. Or, as Frediani puts it: “A flawless combination that can be summarised as ‘pure versatility’.”

An artist’s touch

“It’s not easy at all to design for Mangusta, Azimut and Fairline,” says Alberto Mancini. “It’s like having three jealous wives! You can’t imagine the energies I spend to avoid any design contamination. I have a strong and creative team and we brainstorm each brand differently. Design research is a must, and it takes a lot of time when you work for several brands. When I approach any design task, I work always by hand. I usually produce thousands of hand sketches looking for the best balance of proportions. I like to work at night-time, when all I can hear is the graphite sketching on the blank sheets of paper – that’s pure adrenaline. Then of course after the first step that I identify as ‘the romantic stage’, it’s time to jump into the 3D [process] and push as much as possible what was just a sketch into an electronic file. I always do my best to prevent the computer from ruining my style. Technology advances and improves more and more, but without a sketch, a symbol of our ideas, nothing could be done.”

The Brand New Mangusta 94 Series

By Louise Marsh   17 July 2013

The very first Mangusta 94 superyacht is nearing delivery whilst the second one has just been launched.

Overmarine will be handing over two of its brand new Mangusta 94 open yachts this spring - the first contracts signed for the new series when it was announced last year.

Based on the Mangusta 92 , the Mangusta 94 is not only a little bit longer, at 28.72 meters, she also features a flybridge and almost all of the space up on deck is taken up by an oversized sunpad. Another difference is that the larger of the two has a bow cockpit to complement the sunning area, making it perfect for dining and entertaining with a nice private spot to enjoy the view.

Apart from these differences the Mangusta 94 doesn’t differ too much from her smaller sister, having pretty much the same specifications. Her beam is 6.6 meters, draft is 1.6 meters and fuel capacity is 8,800 liters. Twin 2,600hp MTU engines coupled with KaMeWa waterjets provide a top speed at half load of 38 knots.

Though many Mangusta buyers prefer to harbor hop and so aren’t too bothered about having a long range, the reported 300 nautical miles at her cruising speed will be plenty to get you where you want to go.

Inside, the main deck is lovely and open, from the aft deck doors through to the triple-seat helm. Four skylights in the saloon provide a light and airy atmosphere and large ports below deck in the full-beam owner’s suite ensure it is nice and bright.

In addition to a main-deck saloon, the Mangusta 94 also has a TV/movie lounge below deck, opposite a twin stateroom. She also features a VIP suite, and her captain and crew have cabins aft, just forward of the engine room.

The Mangusta 94 range are fantastic luxury yachts, perfect for chartering. Keep an eye out for them in the yacht charter fleet in the future.

Though many Mangusta buyers prefer to harbor hop and so aren’t too bothered about having long range, the reported 300 nautical miles at her cruising speed will be plenty to get you where you want to go.

Overmarine Mangusta Yachts: Success Built On Italian Tradition

Boasting more than 30 years of Italian design, shipbuilding experience and passion, Overmarine Mangusta is a family-owned shipyard based in Tuscany near Massa, Viareggio and Pisa. Since 1985 the builder has built more than 300 yachts, including 12 Mangusta 165s — the world’s fastest 165-foot (50m) maxi open yacht — built and sold in six years. The Balducci family behind the helm of Overmarine still runs the company today. Offering three different lines of yachts, customized Mangusta yachts for sale are diverse and innovative, allowing yacht owners to experience both the yacht and life on water as they see fit. Overmarine Mangusta leads the market in the maxi open yacht segment. The Maxi Open yachts, like the Sport 104, 110, 132E, 165E and 215, are perfectly suited for the Mediterranean yachting lifestyle. Mangusta are well-known not only for their top performance but also for their impeccable styling. This line has afforded the Mangusta brand with unparalleled success in the segment.

“Overmarine’s Mangusta yachts are exceptional. They offer inspired Italian design and top performance. Especially well-suited for the Mediterranean thanks to their speed and agility, they are extremely popular yachts in the European market, but have a following around the world,” says Northrop & Johnson Sales Broker David Seal. “The Mangusta yachts for sale also are well suited for buyers who are looking for world-cruising capabilities without compromising style as the Mangusta Oceanco segment lends itself to long-range cruising. Performance-minded buyers will rejoice as Mangusta yachts, especially the GranSport, which are built to perform with high speeds and top capabilities.”

Produced in Tuscany by the premier Italian builder Overmarine, Mangusta yachts are built to high standards. Production of these yachts spans 10 facilities between Pisa, Massa and Viareggio. In addition to 190,000 square meters of indoor and outdoor facilities, the Viareggio yard also has two wharfs where the builder is able to undertake final preparations, after-sale service and layovers. Overmarine oversees all aspects of the build process from mold making to lamination of composite materials to fitting interiors, including electronics. In addition, the brand’s in-house design team is able to work with owners to conceptualize the yacht of their dreams. Overmarine Mangusta Boat Models

Overmarine produces Mangusta yachts, which are separated into three lines: The Mangusta Open Maxi line, the Mangusta Oceano line and the latest edition, the Mangusta GranSport.

Maxi Open Yacht Models

It all began 30 years ago with the Mangusta Maxi Open. Currently the market leader in this segment of yachts, there are five size options available for the Maxi Open: 94 feet (28.6m), 110 feet (33.5m), 132 feet (40.2m), 165 feet (50.2m) and 215 feet (65.5m) in length.

All of the Maxi Open yachts are exceptional. Offering iconic style, excellent stability, resulting in total comfort and a quiet ride for those aboard, top performance in terms of speed and agility and well-thought-out layouts that allow guests to utilize the yacht to its fullest potential, there is a reason this line is a leader in the market. The most prominent of the Maxi Open range is the 165-foot (50.2m) Mangusta 165 E series. Welcoming 12 guests in six lavish staterooms and running with nine crewmembers, she is ideally suited for owners with a penchant for performance and style. Her interior is fully customizable to the owner’s taste.

Oceano Yacht Models

The Mangusta Oceano line is perfect for those looking to cruise beyond the bounds of the typical yachting hot spots and explore more remote destinations. Offering the same high-performance capabilities that you would come to expect from Overmarine’s yachts and utilizing the same high-tech processes, but with the addition of metal for long-range purposes, the Mangusta Oceano truly is prime for travel. Available in as at 141 feet (43m), 150 feet (46m), 180 feet (55m) or 197 feet (60m), the interior volume found aboard yachts in the Mangusta Oceano range is truly remarkable. Built to rival explorer yachts available on the market today, Mangusta’s distinguished exterior style and contemporary interiors are aligned with a nautical range of up to 5,000 miles and an impressive beach club.

Gransport Yacht Models

The latest addition to Overmarine’s repertoire is the Mangusta GranSport line. Created to be the perfect blend of the Maxi Open and Oceanco lines, the GranSport offers an exceptional range with high speeds and top performance. The first of this line was a 177-foot (54m) launched in summer 2018 and welcomed with great acclaim. You can expect to see more of the GranSport line hitting the markets soon.

On average, one new vessel a year would be added to the fleet. As a result, I have access to in-house marine architects, engineers and construction supervisors. Consequently, when I decided to build my first large motor yacht, I did not feel I needed the services of a company like Moran Yacht & Ship. In any event, I was persuaded to let them negotiate on my behalf while I simultaneously held discussions with other building options. Moran Yacht & Ship understands yachts, their incredibly complex systems, and what constitutes a practical solution to various owners’ ideas. In short, I would not consider building another yacht without engaging Moran Yacht & Ship to provide the services they are so good in delivering. Former Owner, NORTHERN STAR

It will be a firm dedicated to the most revolutionary founders. A platform focused on supporting the most promising global startups with early venture to growth stage capital.

This is the mission of the newly launched firm, Mangusta Capital. The firm draws its name from the Italian word for 'mongoose', symbolizing its approach to investing –swift, precise, and unrelenting in the pursuit of extraordinary opportunities.

The firm is founded by Tommaso Chiabra from the Principality of Monaco, Founder and investor in notable companies such as the sustainable food pioneer Neat and Royal Yacht International; and Kevin Jiang from Silicon Valley, a tenured investor with wide-ranging experience from Goldman Sachs to Apollo Global Management, and most recently a founding member of the Investment Team at Softbank's Vision Fund.

The two Founders’ unique blend of diverse backgrounds, locations, expertise and strategic positioning obtained the support of LMDV Capital who is anchoring the fund.

“Mangusta Capital will be dedicated to pioneering life-changing technologies and innovations” states Tommaso Chiabra. “With our roots firmly planted in Silicon Valley, we are uniquely positioned to tap into the brightest talents and freshest ideas from this dynamic ecosystem. Our goal is to be investors in transformative businesses that will redefine the future of society, driving progress and making a meaningful impact."

Mangusta’s current portfolio already demonstrates these themes and capabilities with, for example, an investment in xAI, an artificial intelligence initiative led by Elon Musk; ventures involving celebrity entrepreneurs including an investment in Vanessa Hudgens' Caliwater, exemplifying the firm’s consumer health strategy; or the support of emerging longevity platforms.

Mangusta Capital is also proud to announce its sponsorship of the UIM E1 World Championship and Westbrook Racing team – the world’s first all-electric raceboat league – alongside global superstar Will Smith. Mangusta joins an impressive roster of team owners in the Championship that include NFL icon Tom Brady, tennis legend Rafael Nadal, international DJ Steve Aoki, footballing superstar Didier Drogba, philanthropist and businessman Marcelo Claure, star cricketer Virat Kohli, F1 hero Sergio Perez and Grammy award-winning musician Marc Anthony. This sponsorship further emphasizes Mangusta Capital’s dedication to leveraging technology to move humanity forward, by supporting eco-friendly initiatives and sustainable practices.

Mangusta Capital aims to be more than an investment firm, granting partners entry into a community of exceptional talent and ideas that will organize exclusive meetings at occasions such as F1, Grand Prix, Art Basel, SXSW among others to create a fruitful exchange between investors and leaders in innovation.

“Our deep global network and experience leading Fortune 500 companies across the world uniquely positions us to support entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds and equip them with a network of relationships that extend beyond Silicon Valley and the U.S.” said Kevin Jiang.

Continues Jiang, “We don't simply invest; we empower visionaries. We are committed to partnering with exceptional founders who are leveraging AI to improve human productivity at scale, and entrepreneurs who are creating delightful experiences which change the way that we live, work, and play.”

Ukraine Loses Hard-Won Position Near Dnipro River in the South

Soldiers and military analysts said an operation to establish a foothold on the river’s Russian-controlled eastern bank was bloody and hard to justify.

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

Ukrainian troops have lost a hard-won position on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, near the southern city of Kherson, after months of bloody fighting to hold on to a piece of land in what some Ukrainian soldiers and military analysts have described as a futile operation.

The Ukrainian military said on Wednesday night that fighting continued on the eastern bank but that most of the main positions in the village of Krynky, where its troops had gained a foothold, “were destroyed by intense, combined and prolonged enemy fire.” The statement came after several Ukrainian news media outlets reported that Ukrainian forces had withdrawn from the village, which now lies in ruins.

The operation to establish a bridgehead on the Russian-controlled eastern bank of the Dnipro had been controversial from the start. Launched last fall, it was seen as an attempt to open a new front in the south that would disrupt Moscow’s logistics and tie down its troops in the area. But military analysts warned that the operation, which consisted of dangerous river crossings, was vulnerable in its logistics and unlikely to lead to rapid breakthroughs.

Ukrainian gains were limited to small pieces of land near the river, of which Krynky was the most notable.

As fighting to secure the position dragged on for months, Ukrainian soldiers involved in the operation complained that it was brutal and senseless . Soldiers crossing the river on boats were easy targets for Russian drones and mortars. Once they landed on the eastern bank, they had nowhere to hide because the bombed-out terrain had been reduced to a mass of mud and flattened houses.

“From a military point of view, I find it difficult to find some grounds for this operation,” said Emil Kastehelmi, a military analyst with the Finland-based Black Bird Group. “Whatever the initial goals of the operation were, they have most likely not been met.”

The Dnipro River divides the two armies in the south. Ukraine has controlled the western bank since the fall of 2022, when a successful counteroffensive drove the Russians out of the city of Kherson and pushed them across the river.

Ukrainian assaults on the eastern bank began about a year later. They were initially shrouded in secrecy, with small groups of soldiers harassing Russian forces in night raids, arriving from small boats at various points along the meandering river.

Officials remained tight-lipped about the fierce fighting until last November, when they announced that their troops had seized a sliver of land on the Russian-controlled bank, including Krynky. One of the goals of the operation appeared to draw Russian troops to the area and prevent them from being dispatched to other parts of the front where Moscow was on the offensive, such as in the east.

Oleksandr Kovalenko , a Ukrainian military analyst, said that Russia had concentrated tens of thousands of troops in the area to repel Ukrainian attacks. “Let’s imagine that this resource of 30,000 to 40,000 soldiers appeared in the Belgorod region, supplementing the northern troop groups,” he said, referring to Russia’s recent offensive in northeastern Ukraine. “Would the Russians then have been able to capture Vovchansk and Lyptsi completely? Yes.”

Vovchansk and Lyptsi are two towns in the north where fierce fighting has raged but which Russia has been unable to capture.

But holding on to Krynky also cost Ukraine many lives. Ukrainian soldiers said they were stuck for days in muddy terrain with little to no cover from Russian artillery, drones and airstrikes.

An article published on Wednesday by Slidstvo Info , an investigative Ukrainian news outlet, reported that at least 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed on the eastern bank or are missing. That figure could not be independently confirmed.

By winter, with casualties mounting and Ukraine failing to expand its presence on the eastern bank, Mr. Kastehelmi, of the Black Bird Group, said the operation had become “more politically motivated,” with the goal of showing that Ukraine could still be on the offensive, as doubts increased among Western allies that Kyiv could win the war.

Mr. Kastehelmi said Ukraine did not have the resources to sustain such an attritional fight for months. “It’s a fair question to ask if the operation should have been ended faster and if Ukrainian brigades could have been better used in other areas,” he said.

Clarence Thomas accepted a free yacht trip to Russia and got flown out on a complimentary helicopter ride to Putin's hometown, 2 Democratic senators say

  • Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting undisclosed gifts and trips.
  • They say he accepted gifts such as a yacht trip to Russia and a chopper ride to Vladimir Putin's hometown.
  • The senators want an investigation into potential tax fraud and ties between Thomas and Harlan Crow.

Insider Today

Two Democratic senators have accused Justice Clarence Thomas of accepting a free trip to Russian President Vladimir Putin's hometown.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon filed a letter to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 3, asking to open an investigation into the Supreme Court judge.

The letter said there was a "serious possibility of tax fraud" and accused Thomas of having "secretly accepted gifts and income potentially worth millions of dollars."

The letter's appendix , which lists 35 undisclosed gifts, shows a "yacht trip to Russia and the Baltics" and a "helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace, St. Petersburg," both listed under the year 2003.

St. Petersburg, Russia, is Putin's birthplace and where he grew up. The president now resides in Moscow.

The appendix list is titled "Likely Undisclosed Gifts and Income from Harlan Crow and Affiliated Companies." Harlan Crow is a real-estate developer and the former chairman and CEO of the Trammell Crow Company.

The senators cited a ProPublica report from May last year detailing Thomas' hushed-up financial ties to Crow.

The report said that apart from the Russia trip, Crow also funded Thomas' grandnephew Mark Martin 's boarding-school fees, which cost "more than $6,000 a month."

In their letter, the senators wrote that other gifts from Crow included "multiple instances of free private jet travel, yacht travel, and lodging," as well as "gifts of tuition for Justice Thomas's grandnephew," "real estate transactions," "home renovations," and "free rent for Justice Thomas's mother."

In September, Thomas said he'd accepted three trips on a private plane owned by Crow . He didn't mention any other gifts.

Whitehouse and Wyden aren't the only Democrats who've voiced concerns over Thomas' sketchy financial ties.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez of New York filed articles of impeachment against Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito on Wednesday.

"Justice Thomas and Alito's repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law," her statement reads.

Representatives for Thomas, Whitehouse, Wyden and Crow didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

new mangusta yachts

The origins

One family at the helm of the brand.

Giuseppe Balducci was born in Limite sull’Arno, a nautical town in Tuscany. He began his career working in a historic shipyard in Viareggio, but his entrepreneurial spirit and his talent soon spurred him to look for more. This is how the Overmarine Group was born.

THE ORIGINS OF THE NAME

The Balducci family founded Mangusta in 1985, choosing a symbolic name for the company. At the time, the leading brand in open yachts was Cobra by Tecnomarine: the new company was therefore named after the mongoose, the only animal that can fight and defeat cobras. Mangusta clearly set out to challenge the status quo.

AN ICON IS BORN

The company launched the Mangusta 80. Up until that moment, “open” yachts had never reached 80 feet in length, which meant buyers had always been forced to compromise between speed and space, sportiness and comfort. Mangusta built a large, high-performance sports yacht that was also exceptionally comfortable and pleasant to live in. It was a huge success, which left its mark in history and made the brand known all over the world. It was the beginning of Maxi Open yachts! Over the years, models grew even bigger. Their streamlined, sporty lines make them timeless classics – true icons in their field.

THE LAUNCH OF THE OPEN LINE'S FLAGSHIP

In 2007, the Italian boat builder set themselves a new challenge: creating one of the largest open yachts in the world, over 50 metres in length. To achieve this ambitious goal, they approached Stefano Righini, a leading designer in this segment, establishing a long, fruitful cooperation. That was how the Mangusta 165 came to life, the flagship in her range, capable of combining sportiness and performances with outstanding onboard comfort and thus enabling her Owner to live the sea at full speed (up to 38/40 knots) while also enjoying the stylish interiors of an exclusive villa.

THE NEW SHIPYARD IN PISA

In 2012, a new production site for the construction of the new metal lines Mangusta Oceano and Mangusta Gransport was officially opened in Pisa’s docks area. The shipyard extends over an area of 22,000 square metres, allowing to build several units in parallel at the same time.

THE LAUNCH OF THE FIRST METAL SUPERYACHT

Mangusta’s innovation never stops: in 2016, the first three-decker hit the water, a 42-metre steel and aluminium mega yacht part of the new Mangusta Oceano long range line – displacement vessels conceived for those who want to travel the world in style, no matter the destination or the distance to cover. The project, which had started back in 2013, was the result of the successful cooperation with designer Alberto Mancini.

THE FIRST MANGUSTA TO CRUISE AROUND THE WORLD

2018 saw the launch of the Mangusta GranSport 54 El Leon , the first Mangusta to cross the oceans on a 3.5-year round-the-world voyage, covering more than 50,000 miles. Thanks to her 4 engines, totalling almost 12,000 hp, the vessel was able to cruise smoothly in any and all sea and weather conditions.

RESEARCH NEVER STOPS AT MANGUSTA

In 2021, the new Mangusta Oceano line projects were presented: the 39 and the 44, representing a new concept of villa on the sea, with wide outdoor spaces and large glazed surfaces offering breathtaking views. A new era also started for the Maxi Open line, with the iconic Mangusta 165 REV, a true revolution in elegance and performance that reinterprets traditional Mangusta lines in a contemporary key thanks to the collaboration with design firm Lobanov Design.

THE FIRST MANGUSTA 165 REV TOUCHES THE WATER

The first REVolutionary Mangusta 165REV was launched this year. The very epitome of classic, timeless beauty perfectly harmonised with a radically new concept of lifestyle: an aggressive profile featuring the typical rounded shapes of Mangusta’s iconic style. Lobanov Design worked side by side with the Shipyard’s Engineering Department to offer many innovative solutions, first and foremost the huge master suite developed on two levels – a loft with large, floor-to-ceiling windows flawlessly integrated in the hull.

MANGUSTA OCEANO 44. AN OVERWATER VILLA

In 2022 this new three-decker touched the water. With her steel hull and aluminium superstructure is a global yacht to be enjoyed to the full, defined by stylish lines and outstanding performances with maximum comfort. Designed by Alberto Mancini and the shipyard’s Engineering Department this yacht introduces a brand-new way of living the sea.

ALWAYS A MILE AHEAD

At Mangusta, innovation means leveraging the best technologies and newest engineering solutions to break down the boundaries between speed, low consumption and great onboard liveability. A constant effort to guarantee that each yacht’s excellence will offer best-in-class performances while never compromising on the comfort offered by generous, liveable spaces. The family-owned and family-managed business is now led by the second generation, Katia and Maurizio, and Victoria, Maurizio’s daughter.

European leaders discuss migration and Ukraine at a UK summit as concern grows about direction of US

Leaders from across Europe are gathering at an English country mansion for a summit of the European Political Community

WOODSTOCK, England — Leaders from across Europe expressed support for Ukraine and concern about the direction of the United States on Thursday at a security-focused summit clouded by worries about whether the U.S. will remain a reliable ally if Donald Trump wins a second presidency.

Newly elected U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed around 45 heads of government to a grandiose English country mansion to discuss migration, energy security and the threat from Russia as he seeks to restore relations between the U.K. and its European Union neighbors four years after their acrimonious divorce.

The venue for the European Political Community meeting, Blenheim Palace, was the birthplace of Britain’s World War II Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Starmer said the leaders were gathering “as a new storm gathers over our continent.”

“Our first task here today is to confirm our steadfast support for Ukraine, to unite once again behind those values that we cherish and to say we will face down aggression on this continent together,” Starmer said, adding that the threat from Russia “reaches right across Europe.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a key guest at the meeting, aimed at shoring up Europe’s support for his country’s defense and discussing ways to defend democracy. The U.K. accuses Moscow of seeking to undermine European democracies with cyberattacks, disinformation and sabotage.

Others making the trip to Blenheim Palace, a Baroque country mansion 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of London, included German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stayed away as she fought to secure a second term from lawmakers in the European Parliament, which she received as the summit was underway.

A brainchild of Macron, the EPC was established in 2022 as a forum for countries both inside and outside the 27-nation EU after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine shattered Europe’s sense of security. Previous summits have been held in the Czech capital, Prague; Chisinau, Moldova; and Granada, Spain .

Starmer’s center-left government aims to rebuild ties with the EU strained by years of ill-tempered wrangling over Brexit divorce terms. A key priority is a new U.K.-EU security pact that Starmer hopes to strike soon.

“We are confident that a new chapter will be opened with the U.K.,” European Council President Charles Michel said as he arrived.

Starmer said that the U.K. plans to take a more active role on the world stage , especially when it comes to Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion and to people-smuggling gangs organizing irregular migration.

He told fellow leaders that under his government, the U.K. would be “a friend and a partner, ready to work with you — not part of the European Union, but very much part of Europe.”

He said that under him, “we will never withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights” — something the previous Conservative U.K. government had flirted with, to the alarm of the U.K.’s European allies.

The U.K. plans to work more closely with the European police agency Europol against people smuggling, part of measures to beef up border security following Starmer’s decision to scrap the Conservatives’ contentious and unrealized plan to send migrants arriving in the U.K. by boat on a one-way trip to Rwanda.

Starmer urged European nations to cooperate against “the vile trade of people smuggling.”

“Let’s be frank -- ‘challenge’ is the wrong word,” he said. “It is now, I think, a crisis. We must combine our resources, share intelligence, share tactics, shut down the smuggling routes and smash the gangs.”

Starmer will hold a dinner for Macron on Thursday evening, where the two men will discuss what more can be done to stop thousands of migrants each year making hazardous journeys across the English Channel from France.

When Britain agreed earlier this year to hold the one-day summit, Conservative leader Rishi Sunak was prime minister. His defeat in a July 4 election meant that it was Starmer who welcomed leaders to Blenheim Palace — a key getting-to-know-you moment for the new leader.

Delegates were being treated to full British hospitality — including strawberries with cream and a reception hosted by King Charles III — and to mingle informally in a “leaders’ lounge” and the palace’s ornate gardens.

Many thoughts strayed to the U.S., where the weekend assassination attempt on Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, underscored how febrile and polarized politics has become before the Nov. 5 election.

Trump’s skepticism about NATO has long worried U.S. allies. Trump’s choice of Sen. JD Vance, an opponent of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, as vice presidential running mate has heightened concerns.

Politicians and officials at the summit stressed the need for Europe to show it was taking steps to protect its own security.

“European countries must stand on their own legs more than ever,” Netherlands Prime Minister Dick Schoof said.

That sentiment was echoed by several other leaders, but not by Hungary’s pro-Russia Prime Minister Viktor Orbán , who has riled other EU nations with a series of rogue meetings with foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, about Ukraine.

Orbán said a Trump victory would be “the best news for everybody, because he’s a man of the people.”

Zelenskyy appeared to refer to Orbán when he urged European nations to remain united.

“If someone wants to make some trips to the capital of war to talk and perhaps promise something against our common interests, or to the expense of Ukraine or other countries, then why should we consider such a person?” Zelenskyy said. “The EU and NATO can also address all their issues without this one individual.”
