Photos show what it's like onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, the queen's 'floating palace' that she took on lavish vacations

  • The Royal Yacht Britannia was the royal family's private yacht from 1953 to 1997.
  • It's five stories tall, had more than 240 staff, and was known as the queen's "floating palace."
  • Britannia is now anchored in Leith, Scotland, and reopens as a tourist attraction on May 12.

For 44 years, the Royal Yacht Britannia carried the queen and members of the royal family around the world.

Built in 1953, it logged more than 1 million miles and became known as the queen's "floating palace."

photos royal yacht britannia

The five-story ship was part royal residence and part Royal Navy ship, with a full-time staff of more than 240 royal yachtsmen and officers.

photos royal yacht britannia

The queen traveled on the ship for tours abroad, during which she would meet with dignitaries both on land and onboard.

photos royal yacht britannia

She also used it for vacations like the royal family's annual summer cruise to the Western Isles of Scotland.

photos royal yacht britannia

The queen once said that "Britannia is the one place where I can truly relax."

photos royal yacht britannia

Four royal couples used the ship for their honeymoons, including Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1981.

photos royal yacht britannia

In 1997, the Labour government decommissioned the ship, citing costs as a primary reason. The Britannia cost about £11 million to run each year, Reuters reported.

While the queen has yet to build a new yacht, that wasn't the end of the Royal Yacht Britannia.

One year later, it opened as a public museum in Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland.

The ship is set to reopen on May 12, almost six months after it closed in November due to the pandemic.

Visitors will be able to step into spaces like the teak-lined sun lounge, the queen's favorite room, where she took her breakfast and afternoon tea.

photos royal yacht britannia

The queen's bedroom, featuring a vanity table, writing desk, and twin bed, is also on display. The queen and Prince Philip slept separately while onboard the Britannia.

photos royal yacht britannia

The largest room on the ship is the state dining room, where the queen entertained dignitaries like Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher. The room could fit 56 guests.

photos royal yacht britannia

Nearby is the state drawing room, which served as a place for the royal family to relax as well as a reception area for guests.

photos royal yacht britannia

Toward the front of the ship are rooms where the staff lived and operated, like the 24-hour laundry room. Here, yachtsmen and officers would change outfits up to six times per day.

photos royal yacht britannia

The former royal yachtsmen, known as "yotties," now reunite annually to help maintain the ship.

photos royal yacht britannia

The clocks on the Royal Yacht Britannia don't get touched. They are permanently stopped at 3:01 p.m., the time when the queen stepped off the ship for the last time.

photos royal yacht britannia

Prince Philip once said that the ship occupies a unique place in royal history. "Almost every previous sovereign has been responsible for building a church, a castle, a palace, or just a house," he said, according to the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust. "The only comparable structure in the present reign is Britannia."

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, in service from 1954 to 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. She is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the famous racing cutter built for The Prince of Wales in 1893. She is now a five-star visitor attraction and evening events venue permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2014, The Royal Yacht Britannia was named the UK's no. 1 landmark by TripAdvisor. [Wikipedia]

Had a chance to sort some camera photos, so this is the Britannia from a different view point taken with my A580.

I did not go on the tour as I thought it was rather expensive!

Came across this ship berthed in Leigh today. It is the Royal Yacht Britannia which ceased service in 1997. It has now become a top tourist attraction in the UK.

Taken on my mobile, for some reason the exif has disappeared!

A floating palace - The Royal Yacht Britannia , in service from 1954 until 1997, traveled to 600 ports in 135 countries - more than one million nautical miles for 968 state visits.

The Royal Yacht Britannia proudly served the British Royal Family for over 44 years. This famous ship was the last of 83 Royal Yachts, a tradition which began hundreds of years before in the 1660s. Britannia travelled over one million nautical miles on 968 state visits. She was a successful ambassador around the world and played a key role in major historic events.

As a floating royal residence, Britannia was famous across the globe for hosting magnificent state receptions and banquets, and guests would experience the same grandeur and sense of occasion as at any of Her Majesty’s Royal palaces. The Royal Apartments were an elegant setting to entertain world leaders such as Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela, Ronald Reagan and Rajiv Gandhi.

Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Britannia is a visitor attraction cared for by the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, a registered charity. There was some controversy over the siting of the ship, with some arguing that she would be better moored on the River Clyde, where she was built, than in Edinburgh, with which the yacht had few links. Her positioning in Leith coincided with a redevelopment of the harbour area and the advent of Scottish devolution.

This follows on from yesterday's image, showing the units of the First Sea Battalion of the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment forming-up on the Royal Yach Britannia on 29 February 1972.

In the image, Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia, is on her approach to Muara Port. The coastal and river patrol boats are joining up with her for a ceremonial entry to the port. They've left their joining-up quite late... Six boats are visible behind the Royal Yacht - eventually there would be seven, close-up, properly spaced and running much more sedately.

The vessel in the foreground is clearly marked on the stern as AMDB 117 but I've been unable to find out any details about her or any of the other Bruneian vessels. AMDB is an abbreviation of Askar Melayu DiRaja Brunei, which is the Royal Brunei Malay Regiment in Malay.

The image was taken from aboard a helicopter by an RAF pilot relative who had been working on secondment in the country for several years. Scanned from a slide.

Built by John Brown's shipyard on the River Clyde, Britannia was HM Queen Elizabeth II's ship from 1954 to 1997. The ship played host to many Heads of State over the years. The Queen is famously reputed to have shed a tear at the ceremony to mark it's decommissioning in 1997.

The ship was taken to Leith Docks in Edinburgh where it is permanently moored as tourist attraction. It is well worth a visit and gives a real insight into the life of Queen Elizabeth II . The ship is tastefully decorated but restrained.

Now it's a small harbor on the majestic Firth of Forth in Scotland, clearly in the shadow of Leith's enormous Ocean Terminal. But once Leith was too small for the purposes of James IV, King of Scots. He wanted to lead a crusade against the Ottoman Empire to free the Holy Land into the hands of Christendom. To that end he ordered a new warship so huge that a new harbor had to be built in 1504, a few miles from Leith. This was Newhaven.

Timbers were brought across the Firth from Fife, reputedly deforesting that 'Kingdom' (in the photo you can see Fife on the horizon). In 1511 His Majesty's 'Great Michael' was ready; His Highness launched the largest ship of Christian Europe in the Autumn of that year. At 1000 tons it measured 73 metres in length and 11 across; it could carry some 420 sailors and at least another 1000 soldiers.

But it didn't make it to the Holy Land. The Scots had joined the French king, Louis XII, in an alliance against England. Louis called on James to keep his promise to him and to divert the English by attacking them from the North. The rest is the sad history of the battle of Flodden Field (Northumberland) of 1513. James and many of his nobles were defeated and lost their lives. A Scottish ballad of the time laments that the Flowres of the Forrest are withered away.

Newhaven became a thriving oyster port, but due to overfishing fell into torpor around the end of the nineteenth century, just when the lighthouse was being built.

We'd visited the rollng grounds of te pretty Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh and after walking down the hill saw a fabulous airy and bright, decade-old restaurant with this view. Yes, they had oysters, from the long sealoch of Fyne, and they tasted just fine with a dry Muscadet. We raised our glass to Sunny Days and St Michael.

But Leith has become huge (even larger than I remembered it from about 15 years ago), and berthed there is the Royal Yacht Britannia: in length it measures not less than 125 metres. Ah! the advance of techonology! Above all, it's unsuitable for Crusades!

Another page from the marvellously produced Spring/Summer 1935 Lyons' Cakes catalogue that was entitled "A cavalcade of achievement 1910 - 1935" and that marries events in the King's reign with various Lyons' products.

Lyons', founded in 1884, was as substantial British food producer also known for their chain of tea rooms and restaurants many known as "Corner Houses". This page shows the range of Dundee Cake that came in various sizes of tin ranging from 2/3d to 8/6 with a 'magnificent gift tin' available at 11/6d. The vignette shows the Sailor King enjoying one of his favourite past times - yacht sailing - and here reputedly crewing the Royal Yacht Britannia during the famous sailing event, Cowes Week, on the Isle of Wright.

The inner workings of the Royal Yacht Britannia were shown here by this entrance to the fan space.

I enjoy having visitors and showing them around and generally making a fuss.

The downside is that means I will be even more behind with comments than usual.

Yesterday my first guests of the summer arrived, and this morning we toured the Royal Yacht Britannia. This is the view from the kitchen area of the Commanding Officer's suite. Note the little bell on the tray. This was for the Officer, not the kitchen help.

This flag locker is on the deck of The Royal Yacht Britannia moored in Leith. These are the signal flags used by the Royal Navy, traditionally used as a form of maritime communication to determine the ships state and intentions. They are also used for ceremonial purposes such as dressing the ship.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

"BRITANNIA was launched from the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland, on April 16 1953. For over 44 years the Royal Yacht served the Royal Family, travelling more than a million nautical miles to become one of the most famous ships in the world. To Her Majesty The Queen, BRITANNIA provided the perfect Royal residence for glittering state visits, official receptions, Royal honeymoons and relaxing family holidays. For Great Britain, BRITANNIA was a majestic symbol of the Commonwealth and a proud ambassador generating billions of pounds in trade deals. For the Royal Family and 220 dedicated crew of Royal Yachtsmen, she was home.

Today, Britannia is a five-star visitor attraction and exclusive evening events venue in Edinburgh."

Ocean Terminal, Leith, Edinburgh, 12/8/22.

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia was, for more than 40 years, a floating palace for Her Majesty, Britain's Queen, and members of the royal family. It took her and other royals on many visits all over the world.

In 1981 Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer had their honeymoon onboard.

Also onboard there is the State Dining Room, in which many Kings, Queens, Presidents and other important people have been guests for lavish meals over the years.

The Queen's bedroom, which is furnished as it was whilst in her use, shows simple furniture and a lack of ostentation which may be surprising to some.

Eventually running costs of the ageing vessel led to it's being decommissioned by the government of the day in December 1997. Britannia was then taken to Leith, Edinburgh's port and is now on permanent display there, open to more than 300,000 visitors every year. Visitors can see throughout the vessel, from the bridge to the engine room and can even eat onboard. In addition, the ship can be hired for special evening events.

Further information on this unique vessel is here: www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk/ and here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMY_Britannia .

Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, also known as the Royal Yacht Britannia, is the former royal yacht of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, in service from 1954 until 1997. She was the 83rd such vessel since King Charles II acceded to the throne in 1660, and is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the racing cutter built for the Prince of Wales in 1893. During her 43-year career, the yacht travelled more than a million nautical miles around the globe.

HMY Britannia was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Co. Ltd in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire. She was launched by Queen Elizabeth II on 16 April 1953, and commissioned on 11 January 1954. The ship was designed with three masts: a 41m foremast, a 42m mainmast, and a 36m mizzenmast. Above, those masts are carrying the Lord High Admiral's flag, the Royal Standard and the Union Flag, respectively. The top aerial on the foremast and the top 6.1m of the mainmast were hinged to allow the ship to pass under bridges.

Britannia was designed to be converted into a hospital ship in time of war, although this capability was never used. During the Cold War, in the event of nuclear conflict, it was intended for the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh to take refuge aboard Britannia off the north-west coast of Scotland.

The crew of Royal Yachtsmen were volunteers from the general service of the Royal Navy. Officers were appointed for up to two years, while the "yachtsmen" were volunteers and after 365 days' service could be admitted to "The Permanent Royal Yacht Service" as Royal Yachtsmen and served until they chose to leave the Royal Yacht Service or were dismissed for medical or disciplinary reasons. As a result, some served for 20 years or more. The ship also carried a troop of Royal Marines when members of the Royal Family were on board.

Now retired from royal service, Britannia is open to visitors and is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith, in Edinburgh, Scotland. Over 300,000 tourists visit the yacht each year.

Britannia is seen above approaching Muara Port in Brunei on 29 February 1972 for what was to be Queen Eizabeth II's first visit to the country. The slide was taken by a relative who had been working in the country for several years.

Detail of an old phone on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Also onboard there is the State Dining Room, in which many Kings, Queens , Presidents and other important people have been guests for lavish meals over the years.

Tram works on going.

Captured with the very last rays of the evening sun, this is the Inner Harbour of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in July of 1971. At anchor are an unprecedented trio of interesting vessels, namely:

- in the foreground the 1966-built Beaver II, an exact replica of the historic 1835-built (in England) S.S. Beaver, a paddlewheeler that was the first steamship to operate in the Pacific NorthWest of North America.

- beyond the Beaver, The Royal Yacht 'Britannia', which had transported Queen Elizabeth II to B.C. in connection with the Centennial of B.C.'s joining the Canadian Confederation. From new in 1953, Clydebank-built H.M.Y. Britannia was the Royal Family's sea-going transport until retired in 1997 to become a museum in Edinburgh.

- in the distance, one of the two Canadian Pacific coastal passenger steamships operating in the waters of this Strait of Georgia and Puget Sound area of the Pacific NorthWest.; It could be the S.S. 'Princess Patricia II' or more likely the S.S. 'Princess Marguerite II' .

Taken 19/11/15; The following comes from 'Britannia' web-site:

"The Royal Yacht Britannia announced today that it has acquired the iconic heritage vessel MV Windsor Castle.

In a near £1 million investment, this classically designed ship is to be converted into a 25 bedroom luxury 'boatique' hotel. She will be berthed permanently, adjacent to Britannia in Edinburgh's historic port of Leith.

Launched in August 1963, she was the last ship built by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Company, Glasgow, and was previously the Northern Lighthouse Board's (NLB) tender Fingal. She was Leith registered but spent most of her NLB service working out of Oban for 30 years, followed by her last 6 years, based in Stromness, Orkney.

At 239 feet long, she is nearly two-thirds of the size of Britannia. The vessel was sold by the NLB in 2000 to Tamahine Shipping and has been maintained to the highest standards ever since, at her berth on the River Fal in Cornwall.

The ship is scheduled to arrive in Leith during the week of 25 August, 2014, and undergo an 18 month conversion, scheduled to open in Spring 2016. Developing a floating hotel represents natural organic growth for Britannia, having the requisite management skills in-house, and servicing demand from both day visitors and evening event guests for quality accommodation, adjacent to the Royal Yacht. Officially Scotland's best visitor attraction, for each of the last nine years, and the UK's No.1 attraction (TripAdvisor 2014), Britannia is already renowned for delivering the highest quality of customer experience; and this hotel will fit neatly within the overall brand."

Inside The Royal Yacht Britannia - incredible rare photos

The royal family's yacht is now decommissioned and here's a chance to see inside.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is a hit tourist attraction in Edinburgh, but it used to be a commissioned vessel frequently used by the royal family. Many royal fans may remember it from a Netflix episode of The Crown , and the late Queen Elizabeth II was so fond of it that she even shed a tear when it was decommissioned in 1997.

Take a look inside the amazing boat that has a fascinating history, checking out everything from the late Queen's bedroom to the awe-inspiring engine room…

The Queen's bedroom

A photograph from 1998, reveals the room Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II used to sleep in. The modest-sized bed and simple in-room desk are a far cry from the grand palaces the family are used to.

The royal dining room

An archived picture shows what the boat's dining room used to look like when dressed for special dinners. There are multiple oval, wooden tables, matching wooden chairs and flowers and lamps add to the decadent atmosphere.

One of the yacht's sitting rooms has two floral sofas which wouldn't look out of place in an actual royal residence. A collection of other furniture ranges from outdoor-style chairs to antique-looking side tables.

Zara and Mike Tindall used the boat to host a pre-wedding party, and pictures from the event show many members of the royal family on the top deck enjoying conversations and drinks.

Did you know, they may not have use of the royal yacht anymore, but they still use a royal train?

The royal train has been used by the royal family since 1840, and the nine-carriage Royal Train is equipped with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a dining room that seats 12 people, and even an office.

The Royal Yacht Britannia : A History of Queen Elizabeth II’s Favorite Palace

The Royal Yacht Britannia in Hong Kong during its last voyage in July of 1997.

The christening of The Royal Yacht Britannia serves as a cheeky season opener to  The Crown . Black-and-white Pathé News–style footage shows a soon-to-be-crowned Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) cheered on by shipbuilders as she launches her new 412-foot yacht. “I hope that this brand-new vessel, like your brand-new queen, will prove to be dependable and constant. Capable of weathering any storm,” she says about the royal replacement for the  Victoria and Albert III . By the series’ season finale, set 44 years later, both the sovereign and the floating palace she christened  Britannia will have hit rough seas—the cost of repairing the creaky old vessel and the modern role of the monarchy both in question. Ultimately, the yacht that undertook 968 official voyages all over the world, hosting dignitaries—including 13 US presidents—at receptions and banquets, was dry-docked near Edinburgh, Scotland, where it continues to be a popular tourist attraction. Here are some of the most buoyant facts about the palace the Queen famously said was “the one place where I can truly relax.”

In a nod to the country’s post-war austerity, Elizabeth scaled back the design of the ship that her father, King George VI, had commissioned just two days before he died. Rather than following the opulent plan laid out by the Scottish firm McInnes Gardner & Partners, she opted for the understated elegance envisioned by architect Sir Hugh Casson, who described “running a lawn mower over the Louis XVIl adornments” in favor of simple white walls, lilac-gray carpeting, and “a bit of gilding in grand places.” Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Phillip, were said to have personally chosen the furniture—much of it, including linens, recycled from the  Victoria and Albert —fabrics (florals, chintz, toile), and paintings.

As a former Royal Navy Commander, Prince Phillip also saw to the ship’s technical details, and his Bluebottle racing yacht inspired the Britannia ’s navy-hued hull. Outer decks were made of two-inch Burmese teak. The steering wheel was reclaimed from Britannia ’s namesake, King Edward VII’s 1893 racing yacht; a wheelhouse wheel came from George V’s racing yacht; and a gold-and-white binnacle (housing the ship’s compass) was salvaged from King George III’s yacht and installed on the Veranda deck. Fittings from former royal ships were also reused.

The 4,000-ton yacht had a crew of 220 Royal Yachtsmen who lived on board, about 45 household staff, and occasionally a 26-member Royal Marine embarked to entertain dignitaries. The monarch often welcomed guests from the ship’s grand staircase. (Stairs leading from the Veranda to the Royal deck were sometimes transformed into a water slide for the kids.)  Britannia ’s apartments were designed like those of a first-class ocean liner. A 56-seat state dining room, where many of the gifts given to the monarch (a wood-carved shark from Pitcairn Island, a bejeweled gold statue from Bangkok) were displayed, was the scene of formal dinners with guests such as Sir Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra, Nelson Mandela, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. More intimate gatherings were held in the Queen’s official reception room, a smaller state drawing room with floral upholstered pieces, simple wood tables, an electric fireplace, and a Welmar baby grand piano bolted to the deck—played by everyone from Sir Noël Coward to Princesses Diana and Margaret. The teak-clad sun lounge, with rattan furniture and a toile loveseat, was Elizabeth’s favorite place—where she had her breakfast, afternoon tea, and also enjoyed her favorite Dubonnet and gin cocktails.

A ship elevator reserved for royal use moved between the Upper and Shelter Decks. The latter is where four Royal Apartments (bedrooms), including the Queen and Prince Phillip’s connecting compartments, were located. Hers featured florals, his had red accents. Elizabeth’s understated Upper Deck private sitting room, done in pastels and neutrals, served as the office where she conducted state business. Phillip used his sitting room, with its wood desk facing a model of his first command, the HMS Magpie , as his study. Below deck there was a wine cellar, as well as a cargo hold that could carry a barge, speed- and sailboats, plus a royal Range Rover and Rolls-Royce. The yacht could also be converted into a hospital (though it never was).

As depicted in  The Crown, Britannia ’s final official trip was to Hong Kong in 1997, where Prince Charles attended the handover of the territory to China. By then, Prime Minister Tony Blair’s administration was complaining that the £11 million a year needed to keep the boat afloat couldn’t be justified. With Queen Elizabeth, Prince Phillip, and all of their children in attendance,  Britannia was decommissioned at a ceremony in Portsmouth, England on December 11, 1997, with the monarch seen wiping away a tear. The yacht, now docked in Leith, Scotland, is open to the public as a museum and events space. (Prior to their wedding, Princess Anne and Mark Phillips’s daughter Zara Phillips and her fiancé Mike Tindall had a celebration there.) Visitors will note that every clock on board reads 3:01, the exact time the Queen disembarked her beloved  Britannia for the final time on that December day.

As it celebrates 60 years since its official launch, we bring you photos of the Royal Yacht Britannia from past to present

On 16 April 1953 the Royal Yacht Britannia was launched from the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank by Her Majesty the Queen, although the ship didn’t embark on her first voyage until the following year.

For over 44 years she served the Royal Family as its official yacht, clocking up over one million miles to become the most famous ship in the world.

At 380ft long and powered by two geared steam turbines, with a total of 12,000 shaft horse power, she could reach speeds of up to 22 knots and had a range of 2500 miles.

Currently berthed in Leith, Edinburgh, the Royal Yacht Britannia is now a popular tourist attraction. To find out more about this magnificent ship click here . VIEW OUR GALLERY OF ROYAL YACHT BRITANNIA PHOTOS

The Royal Yacht Britannia Has a Fascinating History—Here's Everything You Should Know

It doesn't get more majestic than Queen Elizabeth II's yacht.

“Britannia is special for a number of reasons,” Prince Phillip once said. “Almost every previous sovereign has been responsible for building a church, a castle, a palace or just a house. The only comparable structure in the present reign is Britannia. As such she is a splendid example of contemporary British design and technology.”

Although she retired from service in 1997, today the Britannia, one of many of the world's grandest yachts , is docked in Edinburgh, where she is open as a visitors’ attraction and host of private events. Below we give you all the Royal Yacht Britannia facts you might want to know, from who owns the yacht now to why she was decommissioned to how fast she is to how to get tickets to visit. Britannia was, after all, the one place the queen said she could “truly relax,” so why not see why for yourself?

Royal Yacht Britania Facts and History

On February 4, 1952, John Brown & Co shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland, received the order from the Admiralty to build a new Royal Yacht to travel the globe and double as a hospital ship in times of war, according to the royal yacht's website . King George VI passed away two days after, sadly, and so on April 16, 1953, the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II announced the yacht’s new name as the ship was revealed.

"I name this ship Britannia,” she said. “I wish success to her and all who sail in her." Britannia was commissioned into the Royal Navy in January 1954 and by April of that year sailed into her first overseas port: Grand Harbour, Malta.

royal yacht britannia facts staircase

The queen and The Duke of Edinburgh worked with interior designer Sir Hugh Casson for the ship to serve as both a functional Royal Navy vessel and an elegant royal residence. Queen Elizabeth II selected deep blue for Britannia’s hull, instead of the more traditional black. Its Naval crew included 220 Yachtsmen, 20 officers, and three season officers—plus a Royal Marines Band of 26 men during Royal Tours.

All of them might have had to change uniform up to six times a day, so the laundry service on board worked nonstop. The yacht also engaged in British overseas trade missions known as Sea Days and made an estimated £3 billion for the Exchequer between 1991 and 1995 alone.

royal yacht britannia facts drawing room

The ship’s wheel was taken from King Edward VII’s racing yacht, also named Britannia, according to Boat International , and the 126-meter ship could reach speeds of 22.75 knots, or a seagoing cruising speed of 21 knots, according to Super Yacht Times . Other fun facts: The yacht could produce her own fresh water from sea water, and shouting was forbidden aboard to preserve tranquility, favoring hand signals for Naval orders instead.

Over the next 44 years, the Britannia would sail the equivalent of once around the world for each year, in total visiting 600 ports in 135 countries. Princess Margaret and Anthony Armstrong-Jones were the first of four couples to honeymoon on the ship in 1960, gifting them all privacy to sail to secluded locations. Prince Charles and Princess Diana followed in 1981 on the Mediterranean as well as Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips before them in 1973 in the Caribbean and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson in 1986 in the Azores.

For family vacations aboard the ship, games, treasure hunts, plays, and picnics were organized, and on warm days the children could play in an inflatable paddling pool on the Verandah Deck.

royal yacht britannia facts sun lounge

In the Sun Lounge, the queen especially enjoyed taking breakfast and afternoon tea with views through large picture windows, a space you can see replicated in the TV show The Crown. Although no filming took place on board the Britannia for the show, researchers ensured scenes aboard it were accurate. In the queen’s bedroom, the resemblance is seen down to the decorative wall light fittings and embroidered silk panel above her bed that had been specially commissioned.

queen crying at britannia

In 1997, the ship was decommissioned after the government decided the costs to refit it would be too great. On its final day in her service that followed a farewell tour around the U.K., the queen openly wept as the Band of HM Royal Marines played "Highland Cathedral."

"Looking back over 44 years we can all reflect with pride and gratitude upon this great ship which has served the country, the Royal Navy and my family with such distinction," Queen Elizabeth II said. All clocks on the ship stopped at 15:01, the exact time the Queen disembarked from the yacht for the final time, and they would remain at that time until the present.

Private tours are also available, and you can visit the Royal Deck Tearoom, where the Royal Family hosted cocktail parties and receptions, for drinks, meals and scones. Additionally, the Britannia hosts special ticketed events for New Year’s and other occasions, and event spaces can be booked as well.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Vancouver

Whether you are a seasoned sailor or a novice enthusiast, Yachting.Rent offers a fleet of yachts to cater to your unique sailing needs in Vancouver, British Columbia. Our range of vessels includes the classic sailing boat and the versatile catamaran. However, the choice between the two depends on your specific sailing preferences, group size, and intended journey.

Sailing boats, synonymous with traditional seafaring, provide an authentic sailing experience. They are perfect for smaller groups or couples seeking a more intimate experience. Navigate the intricate waterways of Vancouver with the wind as your guide, discover hidden coves, or drop anchor in remote bays for a serene picnic. Their deep hulls make them an excellent choice for open sea exploration and extended cruises.

On the other hand, our catamarans, with their twin hull design, offer stability, comfort, and speed. They are ideal for larger groups or families due to their spacious decks and generous living spaces. Catamarans also boast shallow drafts, allowing you to access shallow waters and secluded beaches that are out of reach for larger vessels. If your journey involves island hopping, a day out on the waves, or simply lounging in the sun with a picturesque view, a catamaran is an excellent choice.

At Yachting.Rent, we understand that every sailor has unique needs. That’s why our team of sailing experts is ready to assist you in choosing the perfect vessel for your adventure. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive knowledge of both sailing boats and catamarans, ensuring your voyage in Vancouver, British Columbia, is an unforgettable experience.

Remember, no matter your choice, be it the classic charm of a sailing boat or the modern comfort of a catamaran, the majesty of Vancouver’s waters awaits you. Embark on your sailing adventure with Yachting.Rent today. The city’s natural splendour, vibrant culture, and rich maritime heritage make every journey an exciting exploration. Sail away with us into the heart of the Pacific Northwest.

Warmest City in Canada

Vancouver has endless variety, with one of North America’s most dense urban centers, yet, with the world’s best urban parks, encompassed by wild mountains and waters. This city’s polyglot ethnicities, combined with proximity to the world’s best seafood, make the local dining out very fun. There are also all kinds of museums, and a vibrant performing arts and music scene. Almost 11 million tourists a year visit, with the good reason. Vancouver is one of the world’s best environments for human beings to enjoy a great quality of life. The surrounding beautiful bays will instantly beguile you to rent a yacht in Vancouver. You will want to rent a boat in Vancouver to see this city at its best, from the ocean. We offer a variety of Vancouver boat rentals, as well as boats for parties in Vancouver to choose from. Charter a yacht in Vancouver to see this how the ocean makes this city shine. A Vancouver rental yacht is the best vantage to view this city and its stunning back drop of mountains and bays. When you rent a boat in Vancouver, you will see myriad islands, bays, and a rugged coastline rich in history and nature. Your Vancouver boat rental can also take you to nearby historic villages and destinations. If you are lucky, you may even see an Orca. Onboat has curated a collection of select Vancouver charter yachts for you to choose from. A boat rental in Vancouver is how this city was really meant to be celebrated. For yacht rentals Vancouver has many outstanding destinations. Some of these include:

  • Granite waterfalls, half/full day
  • Seal Colony, half/full day
  • Seaside villages and islands. half/full day
  • With your Vancouver yacht rental you can pick up your boat rental in Vancouver and sail up to see spectacular granite waterfalls cascading into the ocean. An option on the way is to dock your boat at Deep Cove village to take a stroll, or, spend more time here as part of a day trip. Bring a picnic or disembark to explore this seaside village full of restaurants, coffee shops, and the famous Honey Donuts. This trip is the best Vancouver boat rental choice for windy days as the waters here are more protected.
  • Charter a yacht in Vancouver and see the wild side. Hire a boat in Vancouver to take you to Palm Rocks, the basking grounds of around 150 Harbor Seals, and if you choose to go a little further, the Canada National Bird Reserve. Here, you will enjoy amazing views of water and mountains. Along the way you will pass Stanley park and get a stunning view of the Vancouver city skyline. This trip is more open ocean, so, on a windy day, we instead recommend you take your Vancouver charter boat on the waterfall or a harbor tour. If you want to add a short stop, or extend to a day trip, visit Bowen Island near downtown. This is peaceful beautiful seaside village is full of interesting sights, shops, great restaurants and coffee shops.

Bowen island is especially near downtown and great for a quick quiet getaway on a power or sailboat rental in Vancouver.

Recent reviews in vancouver.

My recent boat trip with Captain Gordon and his crew was a wonderful experience. From the moment we stepped on board, their kindness and hospitality made us feel right at home. The flexible and seamless organization was particularly impressive. Despite some last-minute changes, the crew adapted easily and ensured our trip was smooth and enjoyable. Captain Gordon’s expertise and the well-maintained boat allowed us to enjoy breathtaking views comfortably. We are especially thankful for the crew’s attentiveness and flexibility, which made our trip truly memorable. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a delightful boating experience.

Orianna was a fun and thoughtful host who worked her ass off to make sure we had a perfect evening for our friends bachelorette!! Our charter had to navigate through the chaos of the dragon boat fest which couldn't have been easy, but she handled it all gracefully and kept us organized and having fun. Would def charter her again!

Leo was a very accommodating and amazing captain! Pictures on the posting are very accurate. Boat is very clean and organized. He was very nice about some of us being late. Once we were on board he gave us instructions and a few different routes that we could take. Very nice person and had some good conversations. Would highly recommended booking with captain Leo!

Orianna was the most AMAZING host and captain. If you're wondering if you should book with her...YES! You would be a fool to not book! She made my husbands birthday so special, I cannot wait for our next trip with her!!!

BOAT: It sure gives a tropical vibe. Spacious and it's great that there are 2 floors! They have 2 coolers for us ti keep our drinks, the bathroom was cute and nice, the decor was great and most importantly captain Ryan and Levi seemed to enjoy hosting us and were very helpful. We even stopped for a dip! I would recommend 10/10 for a fun tiki themed party!

Lucy was a fantastic captain! She was knowledgeable about the surrounding area and was amazingly accommodating. Thank you for a wonderful trip and I will be recommending all my friends to reach out to Lucy for any future excursions.
