We have seen several iterations of this sporty watch in various sizes, such as 40mm, 37mm, and 35mm, along with the yacht-master ii, but this is the first time we have seen the yacht-master 40 set with rolex’s famous gemstones..

The Yacht-Master has been a consistent part of the Oyster Perpetual collection since its debut in 1992 . We have seen several iterations of this sporty watch in various sizes, such as 40mm, 37mm, and 35mm, along with the Yacht-Master II, but this is the first time we have seen the Yacht-Master 40 set with Rolex’s famous gemstones. And boy is this one set with gemstones.

The latest Yacht-Master 40 is pretty much the same watch we know from 2015 , with the addition of a bright gem-set bezel. The watch still features a 40mm 18k Everose gold case (in case you forgot, Everose is Rolex’s special rose gold alloy) and has the rich glossy black dial with oversized white lume plots (Chromalight to be exact) and Everose surrounds. The movement is still the same trusty automatic caliber 3135 movement and the watch can still boast 100 meters (330 feet) of water resistance. 

The new thing about this watch is the rainbow-colored rotating bezel. I have talked about Rolex’s impeccable gem-setting technique before, and while it is clearly not for everyone, it deserves your respect. Here the bezel is set with 32 sapphires, eight tsavorites, and one diamond, fitted perfectly together, creating a vibrant look on an otherwise sporty timepiece. 

The new Rolex Yacht-Master has the Oysterflex strap featured on the previous iteration.

Finally, this watch is finished with a black Oysterflex rubber strap (which was developed and patented by Rolex) and 18k Everose Oysterlock clasp. There's no news yet on pricing for this watch, but we will update this story as soon as it becomes available. Be sure to check back soon for live photographs too.

Rolex Yacht-Master 40 116695SATS Watch With Gem Set Bezel Hands-On

This year at Baselworld 2017, we saw the release of the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 116695SATS watch done in a gem-set bezel. It’s not a Rolex for the usual fan of the brand but if you’re already someone (like myself) who also appreciates the non-traditional Yacht-Master 40 with the Oysterflex bracelet and aren’t afraid of some flash, then this is an interesting watch to have in a collection. You’ll remember that the Rolex Yacht-Master 40  was introduced back in 2015 and immediately stood out due to the fact that it came on the then-new rubber Oysterflex bracelet. The reaction to the bracelet was, as expected, mixed but has been popular enough with the release of the Rolex Daytona on an Oysterflex bracelet  this year.

Also released this year was this Yacht-Master 40 with a remarkably well-done gem-set bezel, which is about the only “typical Rolex” trait you’ll find in this piece. Love it or hate it, its execution and quality are undeniable.

It’s inevitable, but many watch enthusiasts have an unfortunate patellar-reflex response to seeing precious stones or gems on watches. I think there are several reasons for it: the often ugly bejeweled timepiece; crappy aftermarket jobs; an unfortunate desire to distance oneself from anything “bling” (sorry, but comment sections on watch blogs and forums are the only place I still see that word as of the past decade); as well as the fact that there are not many factory-made men’s watches done with gems that aren’t “diamond explosions” or just come off too effeminate. While it’s obvious that this piece is going to be geared towards the mainland Chinese market, I think this can be seen as a viable men’s watch in the Western market as well.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 116695SATS has a bidirectional rotating bezel set with 38 sapphires (blue, orange, yellow, and pink), 8 tsavorites (the green gems), and 1 diamond at 12 o’clock. The uniformity of the gems in respective color and shape is fantastic to behold and I can’t imagine even the most critical hater not admiring it if they were to find one of these watches on their wrist. When discussing the far more elaborate and rare  Day-Date 40 Green Emerald Platinum  watch, our David Bredan discusses the work that goes into Rolex’s gem setting:

“For models set with colored gemstones – rubies, sapphires, or, in this case, emeralds – Rolex takes particular care in ensuring that all the stones on a given watch are of the same hue, using a combination of a long sorting process carried out by hand, stone by stone in the Rolex workshops, as well as by using one of Rolex’s several sophisticated machines that are, Rolex says, usually only found in independent gemological laboratories. The result is genuinely incredible – if one is familiar with precious stones and gems, it is no secret that it takes sorting through hundreds, if not thousands of pieces to find a bezel-worth of stones that are such a perfect match in color. If anything, it is almost (I said almost!) too perfect as, frankly, I hitherto thought such impeccable matching of colors and shapes would only be possible if every stone were entirely artificial.”

Like the non-gem model, this Yacht-Master 40 comes on the Oysterflex strap introduced in 2015. Not technically rubber, the elastomer strap is fit with a titanium nickel alloy “blade” underneath to give it a more secure fit. The strap also has the well-received “fins” underneath, which are designed to create a very small space between skin and the bracelet allowing for some flexibility during hot and cold weather. The dial is slightly different, with Rolex choosing a glossy black finish as opposed to the matte dial on the non-gem model.

Functionality isn’t affected with the functioning bi-directional bezel, it’s still a real dive watch with 100M water resistance. The double anti-reflective coated crystal and Chromalight lumed hands should make for legibility in the dark, as well. As for the movement, we still see the caliber 3135 movement found in models like the Submariner which gets 48 hours of power reserve.

The  Rolex Datejust Pearlmaster  watches introduced a couple of years ago were mostly ladies pieces, but the 39mm model was labeled just as the Datemaster which implies it’s a unisex piece. For me and many others, between the gems and diamonds on the bezel as well as the dial, it’s all a bit too much. When I look at the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 116695SATS, I see a watch that is a sports watch with gems on the bezel that still retains much the watch’s identity and DNA by leaving the dial untouched.

I think the current popularity of the practice of men’s suits being mixed up with bright and colorful ties or socks shows a propensity to add color (with some restraint) to break up the mundane. This watch costs a lot more than a tie, but I see it much the same way. It’s the watch you wear to a party to show off your style (and bank account) without the guilt and stigma, fair or not, of fessing up to an aftermarket job to your more conservative watch collector friends.

I can’t tell if it’s just me, but I don’t find the colors on the gems to be so colorful that they are obnoxious to look at after a while. The stones are absolutely perfect and that adds a level of confidence to the playfulness of the multi-colored arrangement. Frankly, it’s not often I see factory pieces with precious stones and think to myself “I’d wear that for a whole weekend” because they are just not versatile. I don’t feel the same way here, I’d wear this piece to most day or evening events and not feel self-conscious or anxious.

If you know me, you’ll know that precious gems and colorful aesthetics aren’t really my cup of tea. That being said, there’s something about the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 116695SATS with gem-set bezel that I can’t help but appreciate. Once again, this is going to be marketed mostly to the Asian, specifically Chinese, market but I think one can pull off this watch without the baggage of a (I’ll use this word once more to demonstrate the point) “blinged out” piece.

Price for the Rolex Yacht-Master 116695SATS is about CHF 62,500  and, if you want to go all out on gem-setting, there is a version with a full pavé dial for about CHF 86,000 , though that apparently was too much for Basel to handle. rolex.com

Rolex Bezels: How to Use the Yacht-Master Bezel

When Rolex developed the Yacht-Master in 1992, the company sought to create a top-shelf version of the Submariner diver’s watch. Rumor has it that Rolex wasn’t quite brave enough to make any drastic changes to the design of the iconic Submariner itself, resulting in the Rolex Yacht-Master being added to the catalog as a separate model.

Both watches may look similar with the use of a dial topped with lume, a robust Oyster case, and a timing bezel, but they serve two very different functions. With a build similar to the Submariner, you can expect some of the Yacht-Master’s key functions to operate in the same way. However, while the Submariner is meant for use far below the surface of the ocean, the Yacht-Master is better suited for the decks of a yacht. Since its release over 20 years ago, the Rolex Yacht-Master has become a highly sought-after timepiece, thanks to a blend of bold aesthetics, quality craftsmanship, premium materials, and plenty of variety.

Getting back to the Yacht-Master’s status as a sports watch as well as a boating watch, the bezel’s primary function is to measure amounts of time while at sea, as well as sync with race start times during a regatta. Rolex Yacht-Master as a Tool Watch

As its name would suggest, the Rolex Yacht-Master was developed as a tool-watch for sailing, offering water-resistance up to 100 meters (330 feet) via a Triplock screw-down crown, a highly legible dial, and a bidirectional rotating timing bezel. It’s worth noting that the Yacht-Master was initially only offered in an all-gold finish, with more affordable two-tone options hitting the market in the subsequent years.

Today, the Yacht-Master is the most varied Rolex sports watch collection, available in several sizes, materials, and colorways. Tapered lugs complement the luxurious style of the bezel, which features a matte finish with glossy raised numerals. This gives the Rolex Yacht-Master a refined appearance that stands apart from the more tool-oriented Submariner.

Depending on the reference, the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel is either crafted from sandblasted precious metals or matte black Cerachrom ceramic. The 60-minute timing bezels of the Yacht-Master are distinguished by raised markings, which include numerals and batons. Unlike the unidirectional bezel of the Submariner, the timing bezel on the Yacht-Master is capable of rotating both ways.

How to Use the Yacht-Master Bezel to Sync with Regatta Start Times

A regatta is a sporting event involving a series of yacht races, and the races have timed starting sequences. Boats have to sail back and forth behind the starting line during the countdown sequence without crossing the line too early (an early start leads to a penalty). Therefore, the Yacht-Master bezel can be used to sync with the official countdown to the race start time. Consequently, it’s especially beneficial that the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel has graduations for the first 10 minutes.

To operate the bezel on the Rolex Yacht-Master, all the user needs to do is simply align the zero position on the bezel (the inverted triangle) with the minute hand, then use the 10-minute hashes to count down to the race start time. For instance, if the countdown is three minutes, then the user has to start when the minute hand reaches the third graduation on the bezel.

How to Use the Yacht-Master Bezel to Measure Elapsed Time

Measuring elapsed time with the Yacht-Master bezel is pretty straightforward up to 60 minutes. This would come in handy to calculate the sailing time between two buoys. To start, rotate the bezel in either direction to sync the zero market with the minute hand. Once finished, the minute hand will point to the amount of time that has passed against the 60-minute scale on the bezel.

For example, if it is 10:21 at the start of an event, rotate the bezel until the zero position lines up with the minute hand at the 21st minute. Once the event is over, look at where the minute hand points to on the bezel and it will tell you how many minutes have passed. For instance, if the minute hand points to 35 on the bezel, 35 minutes have elapsed since the timer started.

Although these options are useful while sailing, many of us won’t have this need in our everyday lives, as sailing is a niche sport. Thankfully, the Rolex Yacht-Master’s timing capabilities can be used for any event, be it another type of race, or even to time something as quotidian as keeping track of the time left on a parking meter or boiling an egg on the stove!

A little over the top? Sure, most definitely. But this Rolex Yacht-Master 40 with Gem-Set Bezel is probably not for the Western market. The rainbow-colored bezel has 32 sapphires, 8 tsavorites and 1 diamond at 12 o’clock. Whatever your opinion is, combined with an 18-carat Everose gold case, this piece is impressive.

This is the first time the Yacht-Master 40 is ‘treated’ with such an expressive bezel. Introduced in 1992, the Yacht-Master is a staple of the Oyster Perpetual-collection. We have come across several versions of this sports watch with 40, 37 and 35- millimeter cases. Like the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Everose Rolesor , launched in 2016.

Rolex has just introduced a new Yacht-Master 40 which is set in its iconic gemstones for the first time ever. Gem-Set Rolex Yacht-Master Watches

When Rolex released the Yacht-Master in 1992, it was one of the brand’s most luxurious sports models from the get-go. Crafted almost entirely in 18k yellow gold, this was a solid hunk of precious metal that you could comfortably wear while sailing the seas on your private yacht. Over the years, Rolex has greatly expanded the Yacht-Master lineup with additional sizes, materials, and dials. Plus, Rolex chose the Yacht-Master to debut its newest bracelet style in 2015 by pairing the nautical watch with the black rubber Oysterflex bracelet. In addition to all the great variety, there are also a handful of lavish gem-set Rolex Yacht-Master watches on offer; some in the regular production catalog and some hidden from the public as “off-catalog” models. Here are a few of them.  

Everose Rolex Yacht-Master with Diamond Paved Dials

When you say “Yacht-Master” to the modern Rolex buyer, they likely picture the Everose gold version with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel and black Oysterflex bracelet that entered the scene in 2015. With its sporty black accents and precious metal case, the Everose Yacht-Master has become the flagship model of the entire collection. 

Rolex not only offers the Everose Yacht-Master in two sizes, but buyers can also choose between the standard black dial or a dazzling diamond-paved dial. The current production Yacht-Master 40 with a diamond pavé dial is the ref. 126655-0005, while the smaller 37mm version is the ref. 268655-0019.

Rolex Yacht-Master “Tutti Frutti”

Launched in 2017, the Yacht-Master ref. 116695 SATS has been given the nickname “Tutti Frutti,” and one look at its Skittles-themed bezel and it’s not hard to see why. The rainbow-like bezel that sits on top of the 40mm Everose case is set with 32 sapphires, eight tsavorites, and a single triangular diamond at 12 o’clock. Except for the diamond, pink, yellow, blue, orange, and green are the colors of the precious gemstones, laid in a repetitive pattern. 

Dial choices include the customary black version, which matches the black Oysterflex perfectly. However, if you really want to lean into the opulence of it all , Rolex also made a Yacht-Master “Tutti Frutti” watch with a full diamond paved dial. 

Rolex Yacht-Master 42 with a Baguette Diamond Bezel

In 2019, Rolex added the biggest model to the collection with the introduction of the Yacht-Master 42. The watch sports a 42mm white gold case and is fitted with a black Oysterflex bracelet. In addition to the standard option furnished with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel, Rolex also added a gem-set variation (around 2021) in the form of the Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226679TBR.

In 2022, Rolex announced the latest gem-set Yacht-Master to join the company’s lineup. It was the Yacht-Master ref. 126679 SABR with a 40mm white gold case embellished with diamonds and colorful sapphires. The rotating bezel is home to a group of five trapeze-cut gemstones (pink sapphire, light blue sapphire, diamond, purple sapphire, and dark blue sapphires) repeated eight times in sequence and accompanied by a triangular diamond at 12 o’clock. The case is also set with 46 brilliant-cut diamonds, spanning from the lugs to the crown guard.

According to Rolex, the watch was inspired by the aurora borealis and the glow of dawn, yet collectors have nicknamed it the Yacht-Master “Cotton Candy.” Similar to the other examples we’ve laid out there, Rolex offers the Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126679 SABR with either a black dial or a full diamond paved dial.

Sights in Khamovniki District

  Moscow’s central district of Khamovniki is situated directly south-west of the centre and south of the Arbat District  within a curve of the River Moskva. Its is considered a rather elite district of Moscow. Its main streets are Ulitsa Volkhonka which branches off into Ulitsa Preschistenka and Ulitsa Ostozhenka. After the Garden Ring, which is made up here by Zubovsky Bulvar and Krimsky Bridge, the two streets become Ulitsa Bolshaya Pirogovskaya and Komsomolsky Prospekt respectively. The very tip of Khamovniki is located beyond the Third Ring Road and is occupied by the Luzhniki Olympic Complex.  The district is served by Kropotkinskaya to Vorobyovy Gory metro stations on the red line.
