Espen Oeino

Under the leadership of the eponymous Norwegian naval architect, Espen Oeino International has been designing iconic superyacht interiors and exteriors since the 1990s. Based in Monaco the studio has worked with Burgess on several projects, most notably the 72m Trinity Yachts-built ALBATROSS and the 156m Lurssen DILBAR, the largest yacht afloat by volume.

H2 Yacht Design

Jonny Horsfield established H2 Yacht design in London in 1994. Today it is a multi-disciplined exterior and interior styling team that has earned a reputation for challenging conventions in yacht design. The studio has so far collaborated on five projects with Burgess, most recently with Heesen.

Harrison Eidsgaard

International yacht designers and architects, Harrison Eidsgaard Design is headed up by its three partners, Peder and Ewa Eidsgaard and Ben Harrison. Undertaking both exterior and interior styling, the studio’s most notable yachts to date include the award-winning TANGO and ELANDESS, the latter being the studio’s first project with Burgess.

Jonathan Quinn Barnett leads a talented team of award-winning yacht designers. Established in 1995, the studio has created original exterior yacht designs and interior architecture for discerning clients in the luxury marketplace. With a critical eye on proportion and detail, designs of distinction associated with Burgess include the interior of OCTOPUS and popular charter yacht MUCHOS MAS.

Michael Leach Design

Established in 1997 by Mick Leach with Mark Smith joining in 1999, MLD is an multi award-winning design practice specialising in marine, aviation and residential projects. With over 60 years’ industry experience collectively, having worked in various top design offices, MLD is now established as one of the industry’s leading and most successful design offices.

Reymond Langton Design

Headed up by design duo Pascale Reymond and Andrew Langton, the London-based studio was founded in 2001. The studio has since delivered 28 motor and sailing yachts, including the 134m SERENE, the largest yacht built in Italy at that time. Originally based in London, the studio’s HQ has since moved to the historic city of Bath.

Situated in the stunning surrounds of Beaulieu in the New Forest, RWD is best known for the design of superyachts such as motor yacht HASNA and sailing yacht TWIZZLE. Founded in 1993, RWD has to date completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Established by yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni in 1997, the eponymous design studio is based in Perth, Australia, and undertakes both exterior and interior designs. The studio’s unique location lends a point of difference to its body of work and it has become well-known for designing superyachts with an exotic feel, as well as great attention to detail.

Terence Disdale Design

Terence Disdale Design is an award-winning design studio located in London, and responsible for the interior and exterior design of the some of the world's most significant yachts. Renowned for a ‘beach house’ style, the studio’s most notable yachts include ECLIPSE and PELORUS, and it has no fewer than 10 collaborative projects with Burgess to date.

Tim Heywood Design

A multi-award-winning exterior yacht designer, Tim Heywood Design has produced some of the largest yachts on water, including the 133m AL MIRQAB. Located in Hampshire, the eponymous yacht designer cut his teeth under the guidance of Jon Bannenberg and in the 40 years since has completed six collaborative projects with Burgess.

Winch Design

A full-service award-winning British design and architecture studio specialising in the exterior and interior styling of motor and sailing yachts, aircraft, residential and commercial properties, Winch Design was established in 1986 and has to date completed seven collaborative projects with Burgess.

The 8 Best New British Yachts on the Water, From Sunseeker to Fairline

As an island, boats have always been the lifeblood of Great Britain. And many British yacht builders continue to uphold the country’s proud naval and maritime traditions. While there are a handful of superyacht builders, the UK isn’t known for eye-wateringly huge megayachts or avant-garde design—though that has changed as its largest international brands compete with the style-obsessed Ferretti Group and Azimut brands.

But what you do find with the Brits is well engineered vessels with a high level of attention to detail in both the interior and exterior design. From semi-custom motoryacht builders like Princess and Sunseeker to the rarefied realm of a highly sought-after Pascoe limousine, there’s something here for nearly every yachtsman.

And thanks to enduring popularity, there is nearly always a British-built sailboat from the Oyster yard, somewhere just over the horizon. In fact, whether you’re cruising the waters of the Caribbean, New England, or the South of France, you’ll find U.K. brands along with the highest luxury offerings from Italy and Northern Europe.

Here are seven of Britain’s finest, newest, and most noteworthy vessels on the water.

Project Fox, Pendennis Shipyard

This 114-foot explorer yacht, overseen by project manager Burgess and in build at the Pendennis shipyard in Falmouth, was designed around the owner’s wishes. It has a rugged exterior that will be paired with a bright, contemporary interior by QLondon Design. The owner told Robb Report that he plans to cruise off-grid to remote areas like Norway for heli-skiing with his family and friends (thus necessitating five large staterooms). But he also wanted family-friendly features like a sun terrace, wine lobby, open-air barbecue, and DJ station. Of course, the real breakthrough here: The open stern, measuring more than 1,100 square feet can carry a large complement of toys and tenders, but also scientific equipment (the interior has space for a modular lab) for when the yacht is hosting research scientists. “Flexible cabins and connectivity are key,” said the owner.

The ubiquitous model of the Pearl lineup, the 72 received a creative new interior design earlier this year with the addition of a stateroom that gives it two master suites. The U.K. yard has always been high on haute design, offering different palettes by British interior designer Kelly Hoppen, but this double-master suite idea is a first for this size of motoryacht. The yard has recently won awards for the naval architecture of its 95, which approaches superyacht status, and it will be launching a new 85-foot flybridge next year.

Fairline Targa 40

Fairline is also among England’s internationally renowned yacht brands, famous for seaworthy hulls and top-tier creature comforts. It hasn’t built yachts as large as competitors Princess and Sunseeker but has been equally creative with the design. The new Targa 40’s cockpit is a case in point. It has an enticing exterior layout, with the cockpit featuring a foldout terrace to starboard and a U-shaped dining settee to port facing the rest of the deck, not to mention the two sun lounges on the stern. The 40 is effectively a dayboat, but with two staterooms, it also works as a family weekender. There’s a master in the forepeak and guest cabin amidships which is best suited for children. The galley below decks is also very functional. Top speed for the Targa is 36 knots with the optional Volvo Penta D6-380 upgrades.

Princess Y80

Along with Sunseeker, Princess Yachts is the other heavyweight of British yacht building. These cruisers and motoryachts have proven to be perennial favorites on both sides of the Atlantic. The Y80 debuting at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival looks to continue the tradition. The Y80 brings to the table an “infinity cockpit” with a glass transom and modular furniture for multiple setups. It also has a flybridge that spans about two-thirds of the yacht’s nearly 84-foot length, effectively creating a legitimate third deck. The Y80’s owner’s stateroom is amidships and full beam, while it has a VIP in the forepeak. Two other guest cabins are to port and starboard. The Y80 has an impressive top speed of 30 knots, but at 10 knots the range is an even more impressive 1,000 nautical miles.

Cockwells Duchy Sport

The 37-foot Duchy Sport from the Cockwells’ yard in Cornwall, famous internationally for its custom tenders, is designed for watersports enthusiasts. This Sport offers multiple towing points for waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing and tubing, with interior space for nine guests. Bow and cockpit sunpads will be popular spots for tanning, while a Bimini covers the amidships. Standout features include a wetbar, retractable swim ladder, bowthruster with joystick control, and of course ample water-toy stowage. The Duchy Sport comes with twin 370 hp Yanmar 8LVs which can get it up to a top speed of 42 knots—a speed befitting of this model’s name. Cockwells is also building a new Duchy 60, a stylized motoryacht that should rival Downeast offerings from U.S. builders Hinckley and Malaysian builder Grand Banks.

The Oyster 495 is a 52-foot, 8-inch sailing yacht that entered the U.S. market earlier this year. A new design from the keel up, the U.K. builder was thinking global circumnavigation, or at least serious offshore cruising, from the onset. The yacht is also meant to be able to be singlehanded by a capable sailor. The plumb bow and teak decks imbue the 495 with a definite saltiness with performance and aesthetics. The cabin is noteworthy for being both ergonomic and well-lit. Reported top speeds for the 495 crest the 10-knot mark under sail, while a 100 hp Yanmar diesel pushes it along happily at 9.5 knots.

Sunseeker Superhawk 55

Sunseeker is one of England’s brands that has a global following. For good reason. The Poole builder has a range of vessels that extend from 38 to 161 feet. Sunseeker is known for good oceangoing performance and creative design. The Superhawk 55 is a reimagining of the Superhawks that enjoyed popularity with performance enthusiasts in the 1990s and Aughts before being discontinued in 2009. Sunseeker introduced the Superhawk 38 in 2020, which had echoes of its go-fast past. This 55, however, is more of a performance cruiser than a day boat. With twin Volvo Penta IPS950s the new Superhawk has a very respectable top end of 38 knots and a feature even Miami Vice hot-boat aficionados will appreciate—slow-speed maneuverability offered by pod propulsion. An aggressively raked profile complemented by stiletto-sharp hullside windows augment the Superhawk’s sporty vibe.

Pascoe E-Limousine Electric Tender

Pascoe tenders reside in the garages of some of the world’s biggest and most glamorous superyachts, thanks to the yard’s dedication to customization. The E-Limousine is the builder’s first fully electric vessel, the result of six years of R&D. Top speed is reported to be an impressive 40 knots, with a range of 60 nautical miles at a fast cruise of 20 knots. The builder says not only is this boat greener than a traditional tender but will also offer a smoother, quieter ride thanks to the construction used to mitigate vibration.

Great British craftsmanship

Oyster craftsmanship began in Norfolk in 1973. Oyster drew on the experience and craftsmanship of Landamores, who had been building wooden sailing yachts since 1923. They were soon joined by another Norfolk boat builder with an equally fine pedigree, Windboats, founded in 1920 by Graham Bunn – a master craftsman and yacht designer.

Merge and conquer

This team was responsible for building more than 700 Oyster yachts until Oyster took over Landamore’s new facility and brought the build in-house combining the workforce from both companies.

We have four main yacht construction centres: in Norfolk, there is Oyster Yachts Wroxham which is close to our new composite technology facility in Ashmanhaugh. The Oyster 565 and 595 are all brought to life here by our skilled teams. Our other construction centres are located in Southampton, where our Oyster 495 and larger models – the Oyster 675, 745 and 885 – are built and finished by hand to the highest standards. Our head quarters are at Saxon Wharf, Southampton and our newest construction centre at Hythe Marine Park is a state-of-the-art production facility where the new Oyster 495 is built.

Everything about our boats and build process is focused on creating the world’s finest bluewater British yachts, from the quality of the materials to the exceptional skills of our craftsmen and women and precise project management. We believe a key part of owning an Oyster is understanding the craftsmanship and attention to detail that go into her. In 1959 Leopold De Rothschild commissioned Peter Thornycroft to build a fast, working launch to take him from Exbury on the Beaulieu River over to the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes in under 30 minutes, and in all weather.  And so Nigella was born. She was effectively the first prototype of the famous Nelson motorboats, and delivered style, comfort and exceptional performance.

After 44 years of service, Rothschild donated Nigella to the National Maritime Museum in Cornwall which is where we found her in a rather terrible state and brought her back to the Elephant.

It was almost a total rebuild which included replacing thousands of copper fastenings in her clinker built hull. With her elegant lines and classic Nelson hull, she is a delightful ‘Gentleman’s Launch’, perfect for cruising around the Solent.

It is said that the best things in life come in small packages, and Mustang of Christchurch – a magnificent 29ft classic lifting keel yacht – is no exception. She has had a whole raft of restoration work completed both inside and out, with her owners involved every step of the way.

She was completely stripped, with every inch of paint and varnish removed both inside and out. Various repairs to the hull and woodwork followed, along with joinery modifications to improve her layout and functionality. All done whilst preserving her traditional aesthetics.

A complete refit of plumbing, electrics and electronics systems brought her comfortably into the 21 st  century.

Beautifully restored, and with her tan sails, deep mahogany interior and classic lines she truly captures the spirit of this era of traditional boatbuilding.

We were thrilled when Carlotta – our resident 1899 Bristol Pilot Cutter – won the prestigious 2019 Classic Boat Best Restoration Award for restoration work done here at the Elephant Boatyard.

Having had some work already completed, Carlotta came to us in 2018 with further restoration required in order to get her afloat. The job list included replacing planks in the stern, fixing leaking seams, deck caulking, ballast, fitting a new stove, plumbing and extensive rigging work.

She has an incredible history, having been owned and sailed by pilots, princesses, viscounts, lords, criminals, Churchill’s cousin and even an illegitimate line of the royal family. She made a daring escape from Guernsey in World War II, has been laid over by hurricane force winds and has raced successfully against Twelve-metres.

Her formidable combination of strength and beauty is now restored!

Cowboy builder scammed homeowners out of £650,000 – but will only pay back £108

Victims of a cowboy builder who has been ordered to pay back a paltry sum have said his punishment is a ‘slap in the face’.

Despite a judge describing Lawrence Martin, 36, as a ‘thorough menace’ he was ordered to pay back just £108 of the £650,000 he scammed out of more htan 50 people.

Lawrence pressured clients into paying tens of thousands of pounds in deposits before declaring more work needed to be done, sending costs spiralling.

When he was challenged, he told one customer who asked for a refund: ‘You got more chance of winning the lottery.’

One woman was having work done to help her dying father-in-law. Another couple lost more than £110,000 and dozens more were left with wrecked homes and no life savings.

Judith Kipling handed her life savings of £32,500 over to Martin to build a wet room at her home in Southampton.

She said the confiscation was a ‘slap in the face’. She added: ‘It was supposed to be justice. We all knew we would never get anything back from him, but it beggars belief.’

‘It does not feel like justice at all. Lawrence is prolific, so when he gets out, he will do it again. Obviously, the court hasn’t taken this seriously – I am stunned.’

Martin operated across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight for five years. He left some of his victims in tears and others had to change their locks to stop him returning.

Any work that he did do was so shoddy that many cancelled, demanded refunds or had to fork out thousands on professionals to fix the damage.

He was jailed for five years in February after admitting two counts of fraudulent trading.

Prosecutor Ethu Crorie said that £108.96 was the only money available to the court to confiscate and both of Martin’s accounts are due to be closed by the bank. He has 56 days to pay or serve another two weeks in jail.

At his sentencing in February, Mr Crorie told the court his offending was split in two periods – while sole director of Eastleigh-based firm CLJ roofing and when he continued with his own personal bank account, between January 2018 and October 2022.

When consumers complained, Martin made excuses including references to the imminent death of his mother, problems with suppliers, workers, other consumers and vehicles.

Judge Peter Henry told him: ‘The impact upon those has been substantial, not just in terms of financial loss but in terms of health, anxiety and depression and work they have had to do to get their premises repaired properly.

‘Serious, detrimental harm has been caused by you – your consumers have incurred considerable costs. Your disgraceful conduct persisted over a very long time.

‘You defrauded over 50 victims, you used bullying and aggressive behaviour to your customers, including using a false identity in order to continue to perpetrate fraud, after CLJ ceased to exist.

‘People like you are a thorough menace – not only giving the building industry a bad name but for causing victims devastating injury.’

Martin was also made subject of a 10 year Criminal Behaviour Order, barring him from any kind of building/roofing work. He will however be allowed to practise as an electrician upon his release.

Scottish government to invest in Ferguson Marine shipyard as ferry builder sought

Ferguson Marine Port Glasgow (FMPG) is nearing completion of MV Glen Sannox and sister ship MV Glen Rosa. The ferries are some six years late and estimated costs have ballooned from £97m to at least three times over budget.

The Scottish government has announced plans for a multi-million-pound package of support to help secure the future of the beleaguered Ferguson Marine shipyard.

Up to £14.2m will be invested over two years if the proposal passes detailed legal, financial and commercial scrutiny, which is expected to be completed by the autumn.

The support comes as a "competitive" process is now under way to award a contract to replace CalMac's ageing fleet of small ferries.

Publicly-owned Ferguson Marine Port Glasgow (FMPG) is nearing completion of MV Glen Sannox and sister ship MV Glen Rosa.

The ferries are some six years late and estimated costs have ballooned from £97m to at least three times over budget.

Following repeated delays, the delivery of the Glen Sannox is now expected the week beginning 19 August.

The Glen Rosa took to the water for the first time in April but is not expected to enter service until late 2025.

The Scottish government said it has been working with FMPG on a long-term business plan to help position the Inverclyde shipyard to bid for and secure new work.

Separately, talks are at final stages with BAE Systems for FMPG to secure further work on the Type 26 frigate programme.

Deputy first minister Kate Forbes defended investing more money into the shipyard.

She told Sky News: "Well, it's precisely to protect the taxpayer and islanders, as well as the yard, that we have come to the decision that we have come to today.

"That for the yard to have a sustainable future, we need to make the improvements and the upgrades.

"We have accepted in full the £14.2m ask from the yard that will deliver those improvements, enabling them to then secure work on the open market."

Both Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa have been designed to run on both traditional marine gas oil (MGO) and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

They are the first LNG-powered ferries ever built in the UK.

The Inverclyde yard was nationalised in 2019 when problems with the vessels were discovered.

The project has plagued the SNP politically for years and has been described as one of the biggest procurement disasters in the history of Scottish devolution.

Ms Forbes said: "When the Scottish government stepped in to save FMPG in 2019 we did so to preserve jobs and develop the next generation of shipbuilders on the River Clyde.

"That commitment remains unwavering.

"The company will of course be able to consider a bid, either individually or in partnership with other yards, but its long-term future depends on winning work on a competitive basis."

As Ms Forbes unveiled the Scottish government's plans for FMPG, Transport Scotland announced a procurement process is under way to award a contact to replace CalMac's ageing fleet of small ferries.

Phase one of the small vessels replacement programme (SVRP) will involve replacing seven ferries on the Clyde and Hebrides network with all-electric vessels.

The costs of the new boats - alongside port improvements and shore power upgrades - have been estimated at around £175m.

Ms Forbes confirmed the contract would not be directly awarded to FMPG.

She explained: "Extensive analysis and legal advice confirm that a direct award of the small vessels phase one contract to FMPG introduces substantial risks and uncertainties for the shipyard and the communities which rely on the lifeline vessels, due to the strict conditions imposed by the UK Subsidy Control Act.

"Instead, we will do everything which is legally possible to support the yard and the workforce to secure a long-term future, which is why we have come to an agreement on initiatives and funding to improve productivity."

The invitation to tender is expected to be issued around September, with a view to awarding the contract in March 2025.

It will be led by government-owned Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL).

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "The Scottish government is absolutely committed to improving our ferry fleet to better meet the needs of island communities, so I'm very pleased to see the procurement process for seven new small vessels get under way today.

"Our intention is that these ferries would be deployed on seven existing routes, but would also bring benefits to two other routes from the redeployment of existing vessels.

"These nine routes currently serve around 30% of the car and passenger carryings on the Clyde and Hebrides network.

"The new vessels will also be electric, helping us to deliver a significant improvement in emissions and local air quality and taking us towards a lower carbon ferry network.

"This procurement is a vital step forward in our plans to improve our ferry services and I look forward to following its progress closely over the coming months."

Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 August 2024, 2pm to 4:30pm.

Osney and Iffley reaches, Iffley Lock to Folly Bridge.

Racing boats will use a buoyed channel, one just above Iffley lock and one at the finish line by Falcon boat club to ensure competitors stay to the right bank as they finish. Marshalls will be located at the start line, finish line and turning points.

There will be 1 set of races each day, completing multiple laps between Iffley lock and Folly bridge.

Regatta boards will mark the upstream and downstream ends of the course.

Racing will be held between 2pm – 4:30pm.

You should keep to a safe speed and be aware of other boats near the event. The effect of wash from powered boats can put the canoeists at greater risk of capsize, so please show consideration. Please take particular care where canoes are turning and slowdown if asked by the marshals.

You must follow any instructions given from Environment Agency control points or patrol launches.

You are responsible for avoiding collisions. You should use all available means appropriate to the situation to avoid risk.

Swimming is not allowed on or near the course during the stated times.

All directions as to the left and right side of the river are given looking upstream.

Nothing contained in these directions shall supersede those parts of the Thames Navigation Licensing and General Byelaws 1993 and the UK Merchant Shipping (Distress Signals and Prevention of Collisions) Regulations 1996 as may be relevant. Particular attention should be paid to byelaws 24-42 of the Thames Navigation Licensing and General Byelaws 1993, Steering Sailing and Speed.

And Notice is hereby given, that it is provided by Byelaw 52 of the Thames Navigation Licensing and General Byelaws 1993 that:

The master of any vessel shall except in an emergency not pass any boat-race regatta public procession or gathering for the launch of a vessel or any other event or function which may cause a crowd to assemble on or by the river nor station his vessel thereon in such a manner as would risk obstructing impeding or interfering with such boat-race regatta procession launching event or function or endangering the safety of persons assembling on the river or preventing or interfering with the maintenance of order thereon.

The maximum penalty for breach of the Byelaws is £1,000.
