Welcome to Chuck Paine’s new website. Chuck Paine has been designing and building yachts for over 60 years. He has been the chief designer for many of the world’s highest quality yacht builders. Morris Yachts, Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, Cabo Rico Yachts, Able Marine, York Marine and French & Webb in America, Bowman and Victoria Yachts in the UK, Kanter in Canada, Kelly Archer in New Zealand, and Gouwerok in Holland are a few examples of high-end yachtbuilders who have built more than 1000 individual yachts to Paine designs.
It has not escaped Chuck’s notice of late that the majority of large yachts today spend their lives unused in marinas, incurring slip fees and maintenance expenses without providing any enjoyment to their owners. Only the smaller, easily singlehanded boats seem to be used on sparkling summer weekends.
So in the past few years, Chuck has devoted his talents to a new era in yacht design: designing and building small, elegant, easily usable, classic sailboats with eternal appeal, affordable in view of their gemstone quality; but like all of his oeuvre to date, devoid of any pretense of being cheap. This site provides access to Chuck’s archive of yacht designs and highlights the growing portfolio of small, easily maintained and easily gotten going sailboat designs he is focusing on these days.
With a lifetime of experience to guide him, Chuck has written two books which should be of interest to students of yacht design. While one is regrettably out of print, the more recent book can be purchased in printed form, and both are instantly available as digital downloads from this website. Read these books, forget the headlines, put on plenty of sunscreen, and go sailing!

WE BUILD SMART YACHTS FOR SMART OWNERS
At Dynamiq, we believe in a smarter way to build yachts. We believe in intelligent buyers and next-generation yachts that are efficient, easy to order and effortless to customize. We believe in the latest technologies, logical innovations and unique collaborations. We believe in the winning, value for money formula of yachts that are engineered in the Netherlands, designed in Monaco and crafted in Turkey. So don’t think too hard. Live smart. Be Dynamiq.
The shipyard.
The construction of Dynamiq yachts is carried out in the Antalya Free Zone, Turkey, which is a government-protected area that benefits from a special tax regime lowering costs and hosts a cluster of high profile shipyards from both Turkey and the Netherlands. Dynamiq occupies the most modern and newest facility in the Free Zone, with 10,000 m 2 covered space and access to a 2,000 ton syncrolift for safe and easy launching. The sheds are well fitted out for building the full range of Dynamiq superyachts up to 65 meters in length. Various powertrain options are available including hybrid or diesel-electric technology.
The works are organized with international subcontractors from Germany, Austria and Italy, who team up with the best local craftsmen to achieve a level of quality in line with North European standards. Dynamiq has in-house interior, teak and stainless steel production to ensure that the end product finish is absolutely perfect and minimize the risks of delays. The shipyard working environment is carefully managed and strict quality control standards are maintained by both the Dynamiq team and external surveyors from Europe. Dynamiq organized dedicated modern office spaces to welcome owner's representatives and crew members.
The Dynamiq range is a product of leading European technology and craftsmanship. This unique international approach has created an innovative superyacht of the highest quality born from a collaboration of the world’s top superyacht design and construction experts.
Forward thinking design, innovative naval architecture, highest engineering standards, top-quality steel & aluminium construction, ocean-going range, smart pricing.
Dynamiq's unique exteriors look impressive and fresh and express the sporty, chic soul of our yachts. They not only look great, but also perform at the top of their class and lend owners a sense of exclusivity and pride.
Dynamiq’s high efficiency is based on innovative technologies in modern naval architecture: fast displacement hull lines, the Hull Vane under the stern, and Sleipner curved fin stabilizers. Completely drawn by leading naval architects in the Netherlands, all Dynamiq yachts feature a round-bilge shape for remarkably low resistance and low fuel consumption, while providing seaworthiness and comfort with long waterline length and low centre of gravity.
Each Dynamiq yacht is by definition safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly in accordance with the strictest RINA and BV Commercial Class standards, prestigious Comfort and Green Star Plus notations, Large Yacht Code 4 (LY4) compliancy and manning standards. This not only makes our vessels ultra-safe and almost silent, but also means they can be chartered to offset the cost of ownership.
Only certified marine-grade steel, aluminium and Sealium are used for Dynamiq hulls and superstructures. In comparison with composite hulls, they are much quieter, easier to repair and have higher trade-in value due to the fact that they have a very long service life.
Dynamiq yachts are designed with an ocean-going capability in mind, which means owners have the opportunity to enjoy multiple seasons during the year (say Mediterranean and Caribbean) and visit remote locations with no re-fueling infrastructure. Equipped with high-capacity marine fridges and freezers, cold garbage stores, separate laundry facilities, plenty of storage space, generous fresh water tanks and powerful water-makers, Dynamiq yachts provide autonomy at sea in complete comfort.
Combining Dutch engineering with production facilities in the one of the biggest Turkish shipbuilding hubs of Antalya Free Zone means Dynamiq can offer North European standards and quality craftsmanship at significantly reduced prices. Being pioneers in the superyacht industry, Dynamiq also has an Online Configurator where clients can customize their yachts in a few clicks and see in real time how the price and delivery times vary.

My specialty is custom yacht design, from concept to launch. Strength, safety, comfort, performance, style, grace... the essential attributes of a yacht. Whether built in wood, steel, aluminum or composite, those qualities shape my design strategy. My mission is to combine an owner's wishes with graceful aesthetics, human-friendly design, competent analysis, maximum performance, robust structure, and classic form. I offer a high degree of creativity in pursuit of solutions to client requests. I view this as the essence of good design. See the article for more information. See the for a complete index to over 250 web pages that include yacht designs and articles about boats and boating. By using computer aided modeling a yacht design can be created with optimum aesthetics, structure, performance, stability and seakeeping. Using the same digital model, the structural parts of the vessel can be defined for CNC cutting. CNC cutting delivers a more accurate and higher quality structure at a more favorable cost than would be possible using manual lofting and cutting methods. See the article for a detailed outline of my design development process.

Welcome! Dickes Yacht Design is a small design studio dedicated to the creation of standard setting motor yachts and power boats. Founded in 1992, we pride ourselves on our ability to consistently produce innovative designs that not only deliver class leading performance and efficiency, but will be as strikingly beautiful in 20 years as they are on launch day. If you seek speed and beauty, you're in the right place.
We've designed boats and yachts for construction in molded composites, wood/epoxy, and welded aluminum. While the majority of our work has been the design of custom built yachts for recreational use, we also produce designs for serial production and for commercial and government service. Over the years, we've carved out a niche in high speed planing hulls between 30 and 70 feet, but we love every boat with a motor and speed is relative. We're comfortable with the design of any vessel from a novel new dinghy to a 200 ton expedition motor yacht and everything in between.
We've produced plans and specifications for both yacht owners as well as for shipyards and boat builders. Whether you're an owner looking for your first (or next) custom yacht, a production builder developing a new model, or a shipyard seeking help with a refit or a one-off build, talk to us about the design. We're team players and strive to provide the highest quality service and client satisfaction. We will do everything we can to meet your goals and expectations. Together, we can create something remarkable, something enduring, and something in which we can all take great pride.
Have a look around our website. Examples of built work are on display on the In the Water pages and the In Development pages cover projects that are in design now. See the Services page for additional details about the range of services we offer.
Thanks for stopping by. Please visit often. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to contact us. We hope to hear from you soon.

Getting started, the polliwog is a great entry into wooden boat building with the polliwog, we offer the amateur builder the opportunity to build a lightweight and strong dinghy or tender., power cruisers.
With several 38-foot walkaround boats on the water, Tim Winters and his team at Winter Custom Yachts in North Carolina have optimized the walkaround concept in order to take full advantage of its inherent versatility. Anglers are no longer confined to the limited space in the cockpit and have the freedom to fight fish 360 degrees. Even just taking the family on a shorthanded picnic cruise is safer and easier since everyone has full access to the bow without having to navigate a slippery deck.
If there’s a drawback to the walkaround design, it’s a loss of interior volume, as the boat’s command deck and salon are compact to accommodate the walkaround alleys that span the perimeter of the hull. To make up for it, Winter upsized his latest version to 46 feet. The result is Hull No. 37, Thumper . This 46-footer was designed to be a fishing tender as part of a globetrotting mothership-and-game boat operation, and is a tough-as-nails workhorse designed to fish hard and well.
The 46 is a yacht tender, and it has yacht-level finish to match the mothership. Descending from the air-conditioned command deck via a semi-spiral staircase, the galley and couch are immediately below, along with a day head. The full-beam en suite master is forward, with a guest stateroom with twin bunks aft.
Power is a pair of 850 hp MAN i6 engines. At a 35-knot cruise, Thumper is riding comfortably while burning 60 gallons per hour; with 600 gallons of fuel, that’s a range of 350 nautical miles. At top hop, it hits 39.3 knots on initial sea trials while burning 80 gallons per hour. The performance illustrates the vessel;s efficient hull form and the CJR flow-aligned running gear and propellers.
The program for this mothership-gameboat operation includes fishing adventures in far-flung destinations such as Magdalena Bay, Mexico and the distant seamounts off Costa Rica.
Other notable features on the Winters 46 include a 25 kW Northern Lights generator and a Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer. The satin-finish interior showcases the builder’s woodworking talents, with the horizontal grain teak veneer selected to match the interior of the owner’s larger yacht.
On the command deck, the peninsula helm stretches from port with multiple Garmin displays as well as joystick control, FLIR night vision and omnidirectional sonar.
“Since our inception, I have strived to perfect every technique and component to optimize the unique fishing experience my clients want to achieve,” Winters says. “During the process, I work alongside my clients to make the build process enjoyable, so much that some have repeated the process several times. They recognize their boat is not only a fun venture, but it also affords an excellent investment. I never compromise on details and will always deliver the finest custom sportfishing boats that my clients are proud to own.”
Winters considers Thumper to be the ultimate gameboat, thanks to the smooth transitions from bow to stern with no steps to impede an angler as well as the boat’s overall size and nimbleness.

From foiling windsurfers and catamarans to traditional classes here'e everything you need to know about the Olympic Boats and Olympic Sailing Events at Paris 2024
There have been many changes to the Olympic Sailing boats – or Olympic sailing classes – since the last, Covid delayed, Games in Tokyo, so what are the new Olympic Boats zipping around in the stunning Mediterranean weather in the Olympic sailing venue in Marseilles?
Two of the new Olympic sailing events do not take place in boats at all, but are the Olympic Windsurfing and Olympic Kitesurfing events, which along with the Olympic Dinghy, Olympic Multihull, and Olympic Skiff events all fall under the ‘Olympic Sailing’ banner.
Both the windsurfing and kitesurfing events at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be zooming around out of the water on hydrofoils – as is the case for the Olympic Multihull, the Nacra 17 Catamaran .
Olympic Sailing in Paris 2024 runs from 28th July – 8th Aug
The 10 events that will take place in Paris 2024 will be:
Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Test Event, Marseille, France. Day 6 Race Day on 14th July 2023.
The IQFoil is a windsurfing class selected by World Sailing to replace the RS:X for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Sailors competing in the IQFoil fleet may only use a single sail – a notable difference from many windsurfing events, where multiple sails sizes may be used. The sail size for the men’s class is 9m2.
The women’s Olympic windsurfer features a slightly smaller sail than the men’s class at 8m2. For both the men’s and women’s classes, the rider has a choice between using a hydrofoil or a conventional 68 cm fin, with the former being used in all but the lightest of conditions.
Formula Kite will make its Olympic debut in 2024 having been selected by World Sailing to effectively replace two Olympic Dinghy events. The class features a soft, foil kite and a board with a hydrofoil.
For both men’s and Women’s fleets, the Formula Kite classes do not feature one-design kit, but instead competitors use their choice of approved production equipment. The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) manages the class.
Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Test Event, Marseille, France. Day 3 Race Day on 11th July 2023.
The first mixed class in sailing at the Olympics, the Nacra 17 must have one male and one female, though which role they take (helm or crew) is up to the teams.
The Nacra 17 is a very high performance catamaran and now features hydrofoils allowing the boat to zip around above the surface of the water. It can be very fast and very difficult to control, which can result in races with many lead changes.
Formerly known at the Laser and the Laser Radial, the ILCA 7 (and women’s ILCA 6) have the largest number of boats at the Olympic sailing regatta. The singlehanded dinghy is a one-design and all sailors are assigned an identical boat at the start of the competition.
The women’s singlehanded dinghy features the same hull as the men’s class with a slightly smaller rig. As with the men’s class, the athletes are assigned a boat at the start of competition.
Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Test Event, Marseille, France. Day 7 Race Day on 15th July 2023.
The high performance 49er skiff has wings on the side of the boat to increase leverage. Both the helm and crew trapeze from these wings at the same time to increase leverage further still. As a result the boats are fast and difficult to sail requiring a high level of athleticism.
The 49erFX is one of the newest Olympic classes, having been introduced in 2016. The hull is the same at the 49er but the sails are smaller and set on a smaller rig. It still features the two wings and two trapezes and is just as challenging to sail as the 49er.
Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing Test Event, Marseille, France. Day 5 Race Day on 13th July 2023.
The 470 is a two person dinghy with one helm steering and a crew on the trapeze. for 2024 this has become a mixed event and, like the Nacra 17 must have 1 male and 1 female athlete, though what position they take is up to the crew themselves. Equipment is controlled but can be modified to a degree in order to better match the boat and sailors. Men and women compete in two different fleets for two different medals, though in the same type of boat.
Head over to our Paris 2024 Olympic Sailing page for more on the Olympic Sailing, Olympic sailing form guide , and Olympic sailing boats explainer.

Former President Donald Trump's 90-minute acceptance speech concluding the 2024 Republican National Convention included scattered references to Wisconsin and, to a lesser extent, Milwaukee.
Trump, who prior to the convention infamously dubbed Milwaukee a "horrible city" — a comment he later said was meant as a reference to crime and elections in the city — had only nice things to say about the Badger State and was complementary of both Fiserv Forum , where he delivered the speech, and the Pfister Hotel , where he stayed throughout the RNC.
Here's a rundown of the Wisconsin-themed references in the speech:
As Trump ran through a list of people he thanked for the convention, he couldn't help but include a shoutout to the residents of the host city. After spotting the Wisconsin delegation, which was wearing cheeseheads , he also drew cheers when he predicted the Packers would have a "good team this year."
Here's his exact quote, according to a New York Times transcript of the speech :
"And a very special thank you to the extraordinary people of Milwaukee and the great state of — oh, there they are. There they are, that’s — You are so easy to spot. And Green Bay’s going to have a good team this year, right? They’re going to have a good team. They’re going to have a good team. Most of the audience doesn’t like it, but it’s true. You’re going to have a very good team this year."
Here's the exact quote from the speech, which was a reference to the financial impact of the RNC. CBS58 reporter Adam Rife said Trump went off script for that number; the teleprompter said $200 million.
"And by the way, Wisconsin, we are spending over $250 million here, creating jobs and other economic … development all over the place. So I hope you will remember this in November and give us your vote. I am trying to buy your vote."
Trump included acknowledgements of a Wisconsin governor in his speech. He didn't specify the governor by name, but based on what he was talking about at the time, he was presumably referring to Scott Walker who ran unsuccessfully against Trump in 2016 and ultimately supported Trump's candidacy. Walker served as a Wisconsin delegate to the 2024 RNC. Current Gov. Tony Evers is a Democrat and, um, likely will not cast a vote for Trump in November.
Here's one "governor" reference from Trump:
"And I promise we will make Wisconsin great again. We’re going to make this ... Thank you. Mr. Governor, thank you very much. Thank you."
Trump referenced an estimated $800 million shipbuilding contract the Navy awarded to Fincantieri Marinette Marine in 2020 . The contract stipulated the shipyard was to build a guided-missile frigate that was a bigger, and arguably more capable, warship than littoral combat ships.
Fincantieri told reporters that the contract could create 1,000 new jobs at the shipyard and 4,000 more at the company’s suppliers. However, the Navy's LCS shipbuilding program has long been plagued by cost overruns and other issues .
This is what Trump said about the shipbuilding contract:
"And Wisconsin, Wisconsin, just like I gave you that massive ship contract, and you’re doing a very nice job, governor, right? Thank you, governor. And they’re doing a great job. In fact, I had a little design change and we gave them a tremendous for, essentially, what we used to call destroyers. These are now the most beautiful. They look like yachts."
At one point Trump mentioned "the late, great Hannibal Lecter," who, of course, is a fictional character. Was he secretly trying to reference another infamous Wisconsinite?
Lecter wasn't inspired by Ed Gein, but Buffalo Bill — the other serial killer depicted in " The Silence of the Lambs " — was. Gein remains one of the most "famous" people from Wisconsin .
