Sailing Adventures

RYA Practical Sailing Courses  are available in the busy tidal waters of the Solent and will give you the hands on experience you need to sail in tidal waters. They cover the entire experience range from those new to sailing and wanting to give it try, through to experienced sailors looking for their Yachtmaster ticket. Our courses include Start Yachting, Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Preparation.

RYA Shorebased Theory Courses  are available in various locations in London and now at our new shorebased training venue at Endeavour Quay (Gosport Marina). We offer evening classes in London and intensive courses at Gosport. These RYA theory courses include the Day Skipper Theory, Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Theory and the VHF SRC Radio course. From 2020 we will also be offering RYA First Aid and RYA Diesel Engine at our Gosport Centre. Established in 1991 and based at Hamble Point Marina, in Hamble near Southampton the British Offshore Sailing School (BOSS) is one of Britain's leading sailing schools. BOSS has full Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognition, is a Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) Approved Activity Provider and the sailing school is run by a team of instructors whose reputation is second to none.

The British Offshore Sailing School offer a comprehensive range of RYA practical and shore based sailing courses, starting with introductory sailing weekends for beginners, RYA Competent Crew , RYA Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper and Offshore Yachtmaster right through to sailing courses and cruises for Ocean Yachtmasters and RYA Instructors. RYA Competent Crew

RYA Competent Crew is the essential starting point for your RYA training. The course introduces the absolute beginner to the delights of sailing aboard a cruising yacht. It is also an ideal stepping stone for dinghy sailors to try yachting and for those who have already done some crewing but wish to learn the right way. At the end of the 5 days you will have become, as the name suggests, a competent (and confident) member of the crew. The course is designed to provide as much fun and enjoyment as possible in a safe and reassuring environment.

You will be taught the fundamentals of crewing such as knots, nautical terms, sail handling and helming, as well as how to "live" in the environment of a cruising yacht. During the RYA Competent Crew course you will spend all 5 days aboard the yacht visiting many of the beautiful harbours and anchorages of the Solent and if the weather allows, complete a longer coastal passage. With a maximum of 5 students per course, your fully qualified instructors devote plenty of time to your individual needs. Safety is paramount in all RYA courses and you will learn how to operate flares, lifejackets, safety harnesses, liferafts, how to assist the recovery of a man overboard and participate in at least four hours of night time sailing during the course.

You will be awarded the RYA Competent Crew Certificate and be an asset to any crew you join.

Itinerary: 

Weekends: 1830 Friday until approximately 1600 on the last day. Weeks: 0900 on the first day until approximately 1600 on the final day. Click here for an example schedule of how you will spend the week or weekend.

What's Included:

All food except the evening of joining, wet weather gear and accommodation onboard. Mooring fees are an extra and we suggest that you budget ampproximately £15 per weekend and £20 for 3 and 5 day courses. For details of what you should bring please refer to the FAQ's section.

RYA Online Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course for small craft users such as RIB's and day boats or RYA Day Skipper Theory for cruising yachts, you can also complete the 9 day Day Skipper combined course

We will start our cruise in the beautiful tourist port town of Cascais on the outskirts of Lisbon. We will visit Porto, we will stop at the marina right at the mouth of the Douro River, not far from the famous Port wine cellars, which we will visit. We end up in the Spanish port city of La Coruña, home to the world’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. Port & Paella, sun and sailing – a winning combination!

Discovery adventure sail full of interesting, exotic places. It’s not often that you visit four countries on two continents on one holiday! The sailing adventure is planned in such a way that there is time to wander the streets of the towns and cities visited. Each place is completely different, with a different atmosphere and a different culture. Sailing in the Gibraltar area is a powerful experience in itself due to the current, weather and heavy boat traffic – great for revising your col regs! Malaga is easily accessible by plane, as is Lisbon for all major airports.

Three days of ocean crossing to the island of eternal spring. We will sail from Arrecife, stopping at the beautiful and rustic Isla Graciosa, north of Lanzarote followed by Islas Selvagenas which is a Portuguese nature reserve comprising of several small islands about 130 miles northwest of Lanzarote. The next stop will be Porto Santo, a small neighbour of Madeira with a beautiful, almost empty golden beach of several miles. Once on Madeira we will visit some of the marinas in the south of the island and end up in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. The entire trip should be less than 400 miles. Informal coaching on the way, keeping your skills fresh in the winter months.

Jersey – Dublin – Largs

A brisk, action-packed cruise across the English Channel and the Irish Sea.

The area of Brittany and the Channel Islands has one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, with very strong tidal currents. Yachting paradise and hell at the same time. Amazing sailing experience and good experience.

Who hasn’t sailed the Biscay, it’s as if he wasn’t even a yachtsman. The Bay of Biscay is called the weather kitchen for Europe. The cruise itself should take about 3 days. If there is time left, we will take some cruises along the coast of Brittany around Brest. Both La Coruña and Brest are harbor pearls of the Atlantic Ocean.
